Sheringham New Year's Day Dip 2020 - A Record Year Sheringham Lifeboat Helmsman Liam Cooper started the dip in 2017 (with assistance from fellow helmsman Chris Taylor). It has gone from 50 dippers in 2017 to a record 517 brave dippers taking to the water this year. Bucket collectors raised a total of ÂŁ2,200 today for Sheringham RNLI with around 3000 spectators estimated, record numbers!

The Crown Inn donated a ÂŁ50 voucher for the best fancy dress costume which was won by a group of chaps with amazing homemade seagull costumes. Continued on page 4...

Steeleye Span's Ken Nicol to perform at Sharrington Ken is a highly acclaimed musician, singer, songwriter, producer, playwright and composer. In addition to his extensive solo work he was a member of Steeleye Span for 8 years having previously been a member of The Albion Band and, more recently, a member of Magna Carta playing alongside Wendy. sharrington Village Hall is delighted to announce a concert to be given by the renowned singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist Ken nicol on saturday 1 February.

He will be accompanied by the equally talented electric violinist. Wendy Ross who has supported many bands in her illustrious career including Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull and Richie Blackmore of Deep Purple. In recent years she has been a member of multi-million selling band, Magna Carta.

His repertoire of music ranges from folk to ragtime, blues to rock, ballads to jazz, amazingly intricate instrumentals to singalong comedy numbers. An amazing ability to play acoustic and electric guitar, resonator guitar, 5-string banjo, mandolin and ukulele with equal skill. As co-host of the Internet radio show, FolkCast (http://www.folkcast.co.uk), he has thousands of listeners all around the world. Touring extensively in the UK and throughout Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand we are very fortunate that Ken is now returning to Sharrington.

COAST Arts, an arts charity based in the Cromer and Sheringham area of North Norfolk, is holding an open meeting about its future on 31 January at The Belfry Centre for Music and Arts in Overstrand. The meeting will take place from 10.30am – 12pm.

Amanda Hensby, Secretary of COAST Arts, says “We have some ideas that we’d like to share, and we want to hear your ideas on how we can best support and contribute to a local vibrant arts scene. Everyone is welcome and if you have an interest in any form of visual or performing art, or you have links within the community with any arts group or school, please come along.”

Every October since 2010 COAST Arts has organised an arts festival in and around Cromer and Sheringham as well as supporting and coordinating other arts events throughout the year. Malcolm Birtwell, a trustee of the charity, says: “Over the years we’ve braved the storms and had all hands to the pumps. We’ve cast our nets wide, been fishers of all arts and always made it safely back to port, if a little battered at times.

Amanda continues “Our goal is to deliver a varied programme of art, photography, drama, dance and all types of music, through workshops, exhibitions, films, concerts and theatre shows, all year round for local people to enjoy and take part in. Hopefully the meeting will result in input from schools, young people and all those with an interest in art in its broadest sense.”

Once again, we will be hosting a series of art exhibitions. Woodgate Nursery and Foundry will be selling a selection of beautiful spring plants and hand-crafted metalwork. We will also be selling honey produced by bees from our Hazel Grove by local bee keepers Ken & Theresa Caves. Woodland crafts from Wrong’s Covert Woodland Restoration, unique glass gardens and terrariums by Moongazer Glass Gardens and willow work by SilverWood Studio will also be for sale.

The funds raised help to keep the church and churchyard in good order, available for community use and, most importantly, open as a place of worship for the people of the village and further afield. Last year the snowdrops attracted over 1200 visitors over four Sundays.

Our many volunteers come from outlying villages, Trunch, Southrepps, Northrepps and Mundsley as well as Thorpe Market. Without them none of our fund-raising efforts would be possible at the church, especially the homemade cakes that have been so much in demand that we produced our own collection of recipes for sale.

sheringham town Council is delighted to announce we will be hosting a Mental Health awareness training evening in association with the Charlie waller trust. starting 7pm on thursday 30 January at sheringham Community Centre (located on Holway road).

The aim of the Charlie Waller Trust is to increase awareness of the signs and the dangers of depression amongst young people and to encourage those who may be depressed to seek help. It also encourages those that are well to pick up the symptoms in others and persuade them to get help.

This free training session is open to anyone who volunteers or works with children, families or young people. New Year’s Day Fireworks Cromer Pier was once again the backdrop for the town’s annual New Year’s Day Firework Display.

The display by Titanium Fireworks rounded off an afternoon of family entertainment including a fun run organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners and a torchlight procession. Many shops and cafes opened for the day to welcome visitors.

At 5pm crowds waited in anticipation for the fireworks to begin – and once again they didn’t disappoint!

SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY

What’s On... Gothic Tales

The last meeting of the Society’s 50th year took place on Monday 9 December. Members were invited to put up five sheets of philatelic material to be judged by all present that evening. The voting system, devised by Andrew McCandlish, gave each person three votes in order of their preference. This certainly made it easier to select one’s favourite three displays, instead of having to choose just one.

The prize for the best display for a new entrant was awarded to Tim Turner. However, Tim’s entry of Bermuda Key Type high value, King George VI also merited the trophy for the overall best display of the evening!

In 2nd place was Jim Farrell’s display of French stamps of 1946 to 1958, depicting historical figures and 19th century celebrities.

Tony Taylor presented the story of the Battle of Waterloo, as portrayed in stamps from a variety of countries with connections with that famous event.

The society’s chairman, Gerry Smith, took the fourth prize with stamps from Papua New Guinea from 1965 to 1969.

This Concert, held in the afternoon starting at 2.30pm, will be the College Band’s second visit to Sheringham, their Concert in 2018 was a sell-out and in fact it sold out within days of tickets being released. The Gallant Gardener - Home Cold Composting

Hello everyone, in this issue I would like to focus on composting at home or on the allotment. I have been gardening for many years and am a Master Composter with Norfolk County Council and Garden Organic.

At this time of the year, the compost heap slows down and just ticks over, as it normally relies on warmth as well as rain to keep it working with all the living organisms working away inside. Whether you have a plastic compost bin or wooden framed composter or indeed any other type, the principles are the same.

The bin should be sited directly on the ground, in a sunny position and if possible be able to take moisture from the rain, with some plastic bins, drill a few holes at the top to allow more air and water in.

Many people ask me why their compost heap is a green sludge or why the material is not breaking down. The answer is always the same, there is a need for a 50/50 balance between brown materials and green materials. Layering the material is important and then mixing it in. If you have an abundance of grass

cuttings then it is important to put paper, cardboard or dry material in between or it will rot down into a black liquid. Tear up the material and it will breakdown quicker. Magazines now all have vegetable ink so no worries here with contamination.

When it comes to prunings, I use the principle of nothing thicker than my finger should go in. You can put leaves in but you need to realise that they will take about 18 months to rot down and to give good leaf mould. If you have alot of leaves use a different bin or put them in plastic bags and pierce the bags with a fork to let the wet in. They will then break down.

so what can i put in the bin? Greens: Vegetable peelings, flowers, fruit, stalks, bracken, coffee grounds, comfrey leaves, prunings, grass

Christmas trees which are shredded and wrapping paper that is not plastic, foil or covered with glitter is ok.

I would also advise to avoid cooked food as this might attract rats, to avoid rats coming in, you can put fine wire netting underneath the plastic bins, this will put them off as they are mainly looking for warmth and cover.

To speed up your compost, you can turn it over from one heap into another every few months. I tend to take the lazy way and it turns into black gold in about 9 months. This can be used as a mulch on the flower bed or dug into the vegetable patch.

When a child loses a parent, through death, divorce or separation, the impact is often significant and long-lasting.

This is bad enough for a child whose loss is owing to the death of a parent, but what if one parent is preventing contact with the other post-separation? No matter how well intended a parent might consider this sort of intervention to be, it has been well researched that the consequences of such actions can have the opposite effect, and cause the child unnecessary suffering and long-term damage.

Not involving yourself in your child’s life, or being prevented from seeing your child by the other parent, can cause feelings of rejection and grief for your child. To make matters worse, the child may feel unable to grieve properly if they have been drawn into conflict.

Where one parent prevents the other from having a normal, positive relationship with

a child, it is known in family law proceedings as Hayes + Storr ‘parental alienation’ or ‘intractable hostility’ and is considered extremely damaging to the child and is increasingly being recognised as a form of child abuse.

In certain cases where parental alienation is established, the courts will increasingly consider transferring residency of the child to the alienated parent in order to reunify the child with that important missing link in their life, and address the emotional trauma they have suffered up to that point. The courts aim is to ensure that both children and adults are kept safe, and to enable children to maintain relationships with both parents where it is safe and in the child’s best interests to do so.

No matter how parents may feel about one another after a separation, the importance of keeping the child’s well-being as the main focus, cannot be understated. It should be remembered that it is the child’s right to have

a positive relationship with both his or her parents, and it is both parents’ responsibility to ensure this happens.

Sheringham church’s Shed project nears completion

The Sheringham Shed project, set up by Lighthouse Charity Trust on behalf of Lighthouse Community Church, has been making great strides in recent weeks, and is hoping to open early in 2020.

The Shed’s premises are the former St John Ambulance Hall in Wyndham Street, Sheringham. Lighthouse Charity Trust received a grant of £200,000 to purchase the building and reroof it back in 2018. They have also had gifts and grants of over £100,000 for getting the building equipped and fit for purpose, including £15,000 from the North Norfolk Big Society Fund.

The two-storey building has been re-roofed and has undergone extensive refurbishment. The work has included new electrics, new heating and lighting, installation of a lift for those with limited mobility, fitting out two new toilets (including one for the disabled), new flooring and carpeting, as well as fire and intruder alarms plus CCTV.

“We want people to find new friends, build relationships, improve their wellbeing and to discover how to live life to the full. “I think the generosity of our funders is an indication of how important this initiative will be for the local community.”

New Therapeutic Centre at Sheringham Woodfields School progresses well

“It’s been a long trek but at last the end is in sight”, says Daniel Ward who heads up the Sheringham Shed initiative, “Sheringham Shed will be a meeting place for men and women, especially those who are lonely or isolated, lacking self-confidence, with low self-esteem, anxious or depressed.”

Since the construction of the new £1.4m Therapeutic Centre at Sheringham Woodfields School started in September 2019, builders Draper and Nichols have been able to make good progress despite the autumnal weather.

“When Shed is fully up and running, we will be offering facilities for practical and creative activities, such as woodwork and art, in the downstairs workshop”, added Daniel. “Upstairs will be for more recreational activities including, amongst other things darts, pool, indoor crazy golf, as well as table games and movie nights.

Although there was a two week break in construction activity over the Christmas/ New Year holiday period, it is planned that the roof will be in place by the end of February 2020. This will ensure that the interior works can continue regardless of the weather, keeping works on schedule for a June 2020 completion and hand-over.

Matthew Smith MBE, Business Manager at Sheringham Woodfields School, said "It's good to see construction of the Therapeutic Centre progressing so well. The majority of the large deliveries associated with this project have now been successfully completed, and I believe this has been achieved without any inconvenience to local residents."

He continued "At the start of the new term in January 2020, 10 new pupils joined the school. These are the first of the additional 24 places created as part of the Therapeutic Centre development. By the time the project is completed, we will have created 14 new jobs for teachers and support staff associated with the additional pupils, all of whom will have been recruited locally."

Over 200 years of dedicated service to the RNLI at Sheringham 1969 and served as Shore Crew, Crew and Second Mechanic.

• Clive Rayment, also still serving as Deputy Launching Authority, joined Cromer RNLI in 1975, serving as Inshore Lifeboat Crew, Helmsman, All-weather lifeboat crew and Emergency Mechanic, he then left Cromer to join Sheringham Lifeboat in 1984 and served as Second Coxswain & Coxswain on the Manchester Unity ALB (allweather boat) then becoming Crew, Senior Helm and Mechanic when Sheringham received an inshore boat.

• In 1981 Clive received the RNLI’s Bronze Medal for gallantry for the rescue of two fishermen from a sunk fishing boat off East Runton in very stormy conditions.

• Chris Ayers retired this year after an amazing 63 years of service. Joining in 1956 on his 15th Birthday, Chris was Shore Crew, Winchman, All-weather lifeboat crew, Emergency Mechanic and Launching Tractor Driver before taking on a station officer roll.

Sheringham – Otterndorf Twinning Association

Sheringham RNLI is celebrating over 200 years combined service to the RNLI with four of its senior station officers who between them they have contributed 214 years of service, all served aboard the Oakley Class ‘Manchester Unity of Oddfellows’ (pictured) and are still currently actively serving at Sheringham Lifeboat station in various positions.

We would like to invite you to a German themed evening on Friday 24 January at Upper Sheringham Village Hall from 7pm to 9pm. Brian, aged 74, represented Sheringham on North Norfolk District Council for 22 years, and throughout that time was a champion of community safety issues on the Council.

Kelling Probus

Since Crackers’ (who is doing well) arrival, Charlie, Humbug and little George have come into care.

Jack Broughton was our speech giver, offering some fine anecdotes and humour.

George was found on 30 December at only 250g. He was the last admission of 2019. He had a heavy lungworm burden and is on medication. Due to the lungworm he isn't inclined to eat so, to encourage his appetite, I am syringe feeding him approximately three hourly, which is helping to keep his weight stabilised.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We ended the year with good news regarding Dave the little cat who had been missing since April and now have more good news for another lovely cat called Boris.

When walking their dog near woodland, a young couple found they were being followed by a cat who had a very sore eye and was looking quite thin. They obtained a cat basket and were checking with neighbours to see if they knew the cat or had seen it in the area recently.

One of their ports of call was Julie’s workplace, and at this point Julie became involved. As she had no kittens in care at present, she contacted us to see how we could help. It was agreed that she should take the cat home, check for a microchip and if there was one, to ring me so that I could check for an owner.

Once again, we found that the cat was chipped and was registered to a home in Suffolk. I rang the contact details and learnt that the cat had been staying with relations close by when it went missing in October. Although not able to come straight away, the owners were only too happy to come and collect Boris and take him home to Suffolk. A picture of this very lucky cat was posted on our Facebook page by his owner and he has now been to the vets to be checked and to have his eye treated. Without the intervention of the couple concerned, who recognised that Boris was a genuine stray, he would still be out there so we thank them on Boris’s behalf.

The pens from Briston are now up and already have cats in residence with Caroline and Holly. We thank Caroline’s husband Ray for laying the base, tiling it and connecting it to the electricity supply. At present Octopussy is resident in one of the pens but this will not be for long as he will shortly be moving from the pen to take up permanent residence in the house. We are so pleased that this very special cat has finally

landed on his paws although I do believe the vet has advised he needs to watch his weight. The young cats in the other pen are two that came into care as very frightened older kittens who we knew would need lots of attention to ensure they adjusted to life with a family. They are now receiving this from both Caroline and Holly and already Izzie and Maddie are enjoying having a fuss and being stroked and Izzie will already let Holly pick her up for a cuddle. These little cats originally came in with their four brothers two of which have already been rehomed. All Saints Gresham secures National Lottery Heritage Fund Grant

All Saints Gresham, through a subcommittee of its PCC, The Friends of All Saints Gresham, has been successful in their bid for grant funding for their project to repair and renovate and to widen community’s use of the 1000 year old, round towered, All Saints Church in Gresham.

Made possible by National Lottery players, the ÂŁ140,900 project funding received will enable the Friends to implement the two main aims of their project.

Urgent works of repair and improvement to the church buildings will be carried out including the installation of a new rainwater dispersal system, external repairs to the north chancel roof, tower, windows and external walls and internal renovation including re-plastering the nave. Work is expected to commence in the Spring of 2020 and to take approximately six months to complete.

The improved building will be developed as a community hub, through a programme of events to improve the wellbeing and cohesion of the community in the widest sense, ensuring

that as many people as possible can appreciate, understand and enjoy the heritage of All Saints Gresham.

The programme of events will include the creation of an online data resource for those tracing their family history, using information from the historic graveyard; a children’s guide to the church, produced by pupils from Gresham Village School; a series of lectures on local history focussing on areas connected with the heritage of the church and a programme of mixed arts courses for those who are sometimes overlooked in society. The churchyard will also be used by the school as an outdoor classroom and the church will be available as a concert and exhibition space for the community.

The Friends of All Saints are very grateful to National Lottery players and all those within the local and wider community of Gresham and North Norfolk for their support and previous fundraising for this project. All Saints Gresham will become a warm and welcoming hub, playing an active and diverse role in the life of its community.

Commenting on the award, Julia Drury, chair of the Friends of All Saints, said “We’re absolutely delighted that, thanks to National Lottery players, we’ve received this support, from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. All Saints Church has been an integral and iconic landmark within the village and the North Norfolk landscape for more than 1000 years. Now we can really believe our vision will come to fruition: the dry and refurbished church building will provide an enhanced environment both for church services and a wide variety of social, educational and cultural opportunities, for the community and visitors to Gresham, for the next 1000 years�.

Holt and District Probus Club

The Feathers in Holt hosted the first meeting in 2020 of Holt and District Probus Club on 2 January.

The Club Chairman, John Mangan, presented an illustrated talk about the Vulcan Vulcan with Red Arrows bomber aircraft which was developed soon after the Second World War primarily to carry and deliver nuclear weapons.

John showed pictures of the various prototypes produced during development and of the aircraft as ultimately produced. Although (fortunately) the Vulcans were never called upon to deliver an atomic (or hydrogen) bomb, they did drop more traditional bombs on the runway at Port Stanley during the Falklands war. The idea was to make the runway unusable by the Argentinians and two Vulcans flew that

immense distance with air refuelling assistance and one of them successfully completed this major mission.

Vulcans were also used as a ‘test-bed’ for the development of engines for other aircraft such as the TSR2 and Concorde. There are no Vulcans flying now, but there are several as static exhibits, including one at the City of Norwich Aviation Museum, where it is possible to enter the flight deck. Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the first Thursday each month at the Feathers Speaker John Mangan in Holt. A careful evaluation and diagnosis of cause of pigmentation is important. Response to treatment can be variable and recurrence very common so some kind of maintenance such as long-term use of sunscreen and lightening agents is often recommended. Most benign pigmentation and pigmented lesions however can be treated very successfully.

We can evaluate the location and depth of pigmentation in the skin and this guides what treatments we may recommend. This may include sun protection, skin creams such as lightening creams, vitamin creams and gentle skin peels. Recently a variety of lasers have been used. We have had great results with our lasers but in general 3-5 sessions of treatments are required. These laser treatments are gentle and do not require social downtime. We also use fractional lasers in which case skin may be pink for a few days.

Christmas was celebrated in style on the golf course at The Links in West Runton, with golfers dressing up in festive attire for the annual Christmas Cracker competition.
