Crown Charity Quiz Presentation

Every Monday night a quiz organised by local customer Bill Hartland is held at the Crown Sheringham.

During each quiz a collection is made by Sue Roche for nominated charities. In addition to the weekly quiz collection, a Christmas raffle is organised by Christine Tew to help raise more funds with prizes donated by local traders.

On Monday 27 January two cheques were presented each for £1012.50, one to Moss Taylor and Robina Churchyard representing Love for Leo and the other to Belinda James representing Nelson’s Journey.

This being the first article from the Sheringham & Cromer Lions since 2019, on behalf of our President and members I would like to wish you all readers a Happy New Year. We finished 2019 with a Pub Dash around the public houses in Cromer, Holt and Sheringham and collected £359.25. In January we held a collection in Tesco Sheringham, and collected a further £198.53. We would like to thank all those who contributed to these collections which were both in aid of the Norfolk BIG C and other local causes. All monies raised by way of collections or via our Tombola Stall are donated to charity. We do not take out anything for administration costs, these are raised in house by our members.

WHO ARE THE LIONS you may be asking, well Lions Club International is the world’s largest service club organisation with a network of over 1.3 million men and women in over 44,000 clubs within 200 Countries who work together through selfless effective community service. Even though Lions are an International organisation the Sheringham & Cromer Lions aim is to help causes within our local community.

Open Day at Chestnut Farm

Thanks to the kindness of John and Judy Mcneil-Wilson, as part of the National Garden Scheme, Chestnut Farm in West Beckham will open from 11am to 4pm on Sunday 1 March. All proceeds from light refreshment sales and other fund-raising activities on the day will be donated to Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society. John and Judy (who until recently sang regularly with the choir) have decades of gardening experience between them and have been opening their garden to the public as part of NGS for nearly 20 years.

Being a Lion is not all about helping others we have a social side as well. We have visits to the Pavilion Theatre in Cromer, local brewery visits, indoor bowls and go out for dinner. These are just a few of the activities we do or have done.

Spring bulbs including snowdrops, anemones and crocus will take centre stage. There will also be plants on sale from local nurseries. Standard NGS Admission charge of £5 (children free) will apply. Members of the choir will help staff the gate and refreshment area. Please note that wheelchair access can be limited during bad weather. Do come along to enjoy this beautiful garden (and the delicious refreshments!) and support the choir at the same time.

The Search for Toto

Red Loft Theatre is following the Yellow Brick Road all the way back to the Atrium in North Walsham for its Easter production ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Dorothy, played by 16 year old Amelia Watson, needs your help to find a starring member of the cast - her best friend Toto!

Anyone who remembers the 1939 classic will recall how the aptly named ‘Terry’ the terrier stole the show with her unwavering love and support for Dorothy as she navigated her tumultuous travels over the rainbow. It is a show-stopping performance like this which Dorothy and Red Loft are looking for in their Toto. They will be holding ‘Toto Tryouts’, their very own doggie auditions, on 21 February at 7pm in St

Benet’s Hall North Walsham for everyone who believes their pup has what it takes to bring the audience to its feet. The perfect Toto should be able to follow commands, fit in a basket (sorry Great Danes) and not be scared by loud noises or sudden bangs, as well as being friendly and adorable!

The show will take place 14 -18 April at the Atrium in North Walsham. Rehearsals are Sunday afternoons.

Whilst there are many Come and Sing days taking place in Norfolk every month, our very own Come and Sing Day on 7 March will be different as it is for sopranos and altos only.

Come and enjoy the thrill of singing a variety of three and four-part pieces for ladies' voices, from madrigals to contemporary composers. Get tips from Janet on how to improve as a soloist and as a choral singer. Fun, friendship and expert tuition will make for a very special day. A list of the songs will be circulated in advance and we will provide music on the day

The cost for the day will be £15 (payable in advance). We shall use the church for the workshops and kitchen and canteen facilities for breaks. Hot and cold drinks and biscuits will be provided. Please bring your own packed lunch. Information on parking will be provided to participants.

The Thrill of Love by Stage Direct

Following on from last year’s highly successful run of Nigel Manson's comedy Miss Marble strikes : Again! at The Little Theatre in Sheringham, Stage Direct are changing the theme this spring to a drama with a play called The Thrill of Love. This highly acclaimed award winning play depicts and dramatises the true life story of Mrs Ruth Ellis (the last woman to be hanged in England in 1955

aged 28 years) who shot and killed her lover, David Blakely. There was a public outcry and the sense of injustice, major factors that lead to the abolition of the death penalty.

Ruth made her mark as a blonde bombshell and was deemed a reporter’s dream for her tragic affair with an upper class racing driver. It may be said her lifestyle helped to condemn her in court as indeed her remorseless attitude added to her troubles. Some of the characters are real in this depiction but some are mortal manifestations of Ruth’s lifestyle at the time. This play promises to be an exciting drama that will have its audience on the edge of their seats as it weaves its way through the sometimes brutal realities of Ruth’s daily life and loves.

“The cast will go through an emotional rollercoaster during the performance which is both challenging and exhilarating at the same time” said Director Derek Bull, “In parts, the action and dialogue will give you goose bumps at the senseless brutality of the law at the time. This play is designed to make us think and examine our own lives, even today, which is what great theatre should achieve, and I think this

play does just that.”

Annual Charity Sale for the Canaan Christian Centre

Volunteers are busy collecting unwanted Christmas presents for the annual sale which raises money for a Ukraine orphanage to give children a summer holiday and also local children in north Norfolk.

The sale is on Saturday 14 March in the Parish Hall opposite Boots in Cromer from 9.30am - 2.30pm. Homemade refreshments including lunch will be served

Holt’s ‘FEBRUARY FILM FESTIVAL’

A mini film festival, at ‘The Venue’ Holt Community & Arts Centre, over the weekend of the 21, 22 and 23 February featuring/celebrating films connected with Norfolk/East Anglia, increasing the sense of Holt as a festival destination for the arts.

Yes, of course, you could just sit at home and watch most of these films on DVD, but there is something about watching a film in company, about sharing an experience – be it laughter, horror, joy, love or surprise – that is special. We are holding our Annual Macmillan Mammoth Quiz on Thursday 27th February at The Robin Hood, Sheringham. The quiz starts at 8.30 and is in two parts with light refreshments at half-time. In an effort to wean myself and the family off crisps after too much consumption over the festive season, I have come up with these super tasty, healthy and savoury oat cakes, which are full of good ingredients and very easy to make.

They are heavenly on a cheese board, or a great accompaniment to home made soups, as a change from bread, and so are very handy for anyone like me who is trying to cut down on their wheat intake. True there is spelt flour in there, but it is a much easier flour to digest than regular wheat flour, and consequently kinder to your tummy. Medium oatmeal can be purchased cheaply at most health food stores, and ground flaxseed can be obtained from Lidls cheaply, and also at many other supermarkets, although prices do vary.

â—? Combine all of the dry ingredients together in a large bowl and then add the parmesan and mix well. â—? Pour the oil into the middle, and add in the hot water, bringing it all together with a large knife, until you have a dough. â—? Form into 2 balls and rest for a few minutes, and then roll out onto a floured surface to a depth of a few millimetres. â—? Cut out rounds with a biscuit cutter to your

From Duncan Baker, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk I would like to start by thanking all those who voted for me in the recent General Election. A 14,000 strong majority was a clear mandate from North Norfolk to get Brexit done, and to move forward with addressing the many important issues you talked to me about during the election campaign.

I’m pleased to say that within weeks I’m doing just that. The EU Withdrawal Agreement has been passed and, on 31 January, we will leave the European Union with the votes of the 58.9% in North Norfolk finally respected. Both locally and in Westminster, my team is taking shape. I’m proud to have a constituency office in North Walsham – where I have had so much support during the last year. Soon I will look forward to hosting regular surgeries around the constituency.

North Norfolk will be my first priority. In these first few weeks I have hit the ground running, working hard on behalf of many constituents. You may have seen me asking questions in the House about improving our ambulance response times, protecting our farming community, the environment, and what the government is doing to help our High Streets.

I have met with Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to discuss the urgent issues surrounding ambulance response times, the need for improved facilities at Cromer Hospital (with additional mental health support), and met with local ambulance staff to discuss their concerns and learn how we might provide a more responsive ambulance service for this area. This is being followed up by meeting with the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital chiefs: I want to see our Accident & Emergency unit radically improved, which will benefit many North Norfolk residents.

I have been made the Vice-Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on moving towards carbon Net Zero, and am meeting with ministers to urge them to help the farming community who are under serious threat, with some of their irrigation licences being revoked. Of course, every day, I’m helping many people with queries and issues, and I am loving meeting incredible constituents all around North Norfolk who do so much for their communities.

Cromer Hospital 2020 Cancer Unit Appeal

1 in 2 people will develop cancer in their lifetime. It is extremely likely that you or someone you care about has been or will be affected.

Currently, if you reside within North Norfolk and are suspected of having cancer, your diagnosis and treatment will take place at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. However, we are delighted to announce that March 2021 will mark the opening of the new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre at Cromer Hospital. Patients residing in the towns and villages across North Norfolk will then be able to avoid the numerous lengthy journeys to the NNUH, often while feeling unwell. They will have speedy access to first-class diagnosis and treatment of cancer closer to their home.

The new services available will include Prostate Biopsy, Chemotherapy and Oncology. The new Centre will also provide 20,000 clinic, diagnostic and treatment visits per year.

The building cost is being shared by NNUH and Macmillan Cancer Support. Nevertheless, further funding is still required to purchase the highly specialised equipment, furniture etc. at an estimated cost of £500,000. Cromer Community and Hospital Friends (CCAHF) have accepted the challenge of raising this money.

The wonderful generosity of the public over the past year by fundraising and bequests to CCAHF has resulted in raising £150,000 towards our target. However, that leaves us with £350,000 still to raise in the next 12 months – a very ambitious figure for a small charity. We are certain that, with your enthusiastic assistance, we can

The Gallant Gardener Starting the New Year Well - Growing in Containers

By the time you read this, we will be into February. This is the time of the year that I start to get the itch to sow seeds and plant, looking forward to new crops and displays of flowers.

The first thing I do in the New Year is to buy my seed potatoes, laying them up in seed trays and put them in a cool lit place so that they start to chit! In other words they start to grow shoots that will eventually produce more potatoes.

The second thing is to decide what I am going to grow, with both flowers and vegetables in mind, looking at the catalogues and making a list of types and varieties to try. I used to grow lots of different vegetables and never eat half of them! So the rule is to grow only what you like. A variety of squash which I grew last year called Honey Boat is a very sweet squash and makes wonderful soup, squash chips and will roast. This variety takes no looking after once you have planted it out and I think you would be able to grow this in a container.

The third thing is to get some potatoes in containers for a very early taste. Everybody can grow something in containers, whether they be large pots, wooden boxes, guttering or as I have done used the old plastic rubbish bins. I have cut them down to about two-thirds of their size, you can use plastic compost sacks or any large container. I then drill holes in the side near the bottom, so that they don't dry out completely but there is drainage.

I then fill the bottom with a mixture of compost, manure and soil for about 12� or 30cm, take three potatoes preferably an early variety or a salad type that you enjoy eating and lay in about 10 to 12 weeks and then you can dig down and find your new potatoes. Don't tip them all out, just look for the bigger ones and the smaller potatoes will continue to grow, this way you will maximise your crop.

It is surprising what you can grow in containers, on a wall, on a concrete floor using pots or bags, it is endless fun experimenting whether it is peas, beans, rhubarb, salads, fruit or flowers, go on give it a go!

In Africa they use bags a lot for growing and also a system called Keyhole Gardens, where a hole for adding compost is in the middle and will continually feed the garden, look them up on the internet.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have had even more requests for help with neutering under our ÂŁ5 Neutering Campaign and some of these cats have already been neutered. We have also been dealing with neutering several more feral cats, some of these with the help of Marian, who was one of our fosterers. Others have turned up at a feral colony where we have previously been involved.

We are happy to advise that Darcy, one of the cats mentioned last time, has now been rehomed and we are keeping our fingers crossed that an enquiry from someone to give Phoebe a new home will mean she will also be leaving us soon. Someone has also shown an interest in Milton and Pearl and we are waiting for them to decide whether they will offer them a home. If this does not materialise there are several other people interested in giving them and the other timid young cats homes too. As mentioned last time, these young cats do need homes with experienced people willing to give them time to settle and adapt to their new surroundings. I was therefore delighted to receive an email from the new family of two of our young cats rehomed by us last year and their owner has given us permission to share their story below :

“Freddy and Dolly were both very timid to begin with, it took them quite a few months to be comfortable going outside and not be frightened by the slightest puff of wind, but now they happily come and go and are both great mousers. Freddie is a typical ‘Tom’, very cuddly, a bit naughty and very greedy. Dolly is still wary of too much handling but loves a back massage and is very sweet natured. They get on well most of the time, chasing each other around the house and garden like ‘Tom and Jerry’ but they have their own favourite places to sleep. Last, but not least, we love them both to bits.�

Not only was it lovely to hear how Freddie and Dolly had settled in but we also had news this week on Artful and Spit (now called Olive and

Liquorice) who were rehomed to Stables. They too are happy in their new home and Olive will rub around her feeder’s legs at mealtimes. They will also let the ladies with horses there stroke them and are also great at keeping vermin under control. Obviously, the right home for them too.

Seaside theatre’s plans for a sparkling diamond anniversary

Six decades of summer drama will be celebrated by a Sheringham Little Theatre this year.

Sheringham Little Theatre will mark the 60th anniversary of its popular summer ‘repertory’, which uses a small group of professional actors to stage a series of varied plays from comedies to thrillers.

A special diamond anniversary season will feature five plays from the 1960s to the noughties including Season’s Greetings by Alan Ayckbourn, Out of Order by farce master Ray Cooney, along with Stags and Hens by Educating Rita writer Willy Russell.

But the venue is also planning some anniversary “extras” including a brand new drama penned by up-and-coming playwright James McDermott.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “Our audiences love traditional farces, but they are mostly from a certain era, and we thought the 60th anniversary was a great chance to bring the format up to date by putting the plot into a contemporary setting. We are hoping to get Arts Council support

Offstage this year the theatre is planning to refurbish its exterior and improve window ventilation in the Hub coffee bar.

His illustrated talk will begin in the Elizabethan era, visit the Napoleonic Wars before exploring Norfolk's spies - imagined, alleged and real - during the First and Second World Wars.

Finally he will expose how Gresham's School in Holt became involved in one of the most daring and successful pieces of espionage ever - the Cambridge and Oxford Spy Rings recruited to serve the USSR.

At the Sheringham History Group meeting on 4 March at Sheringham Museum Simon Kinder will explore the fascinating history of Norfolk spies and traitors.

Following the retirement of Father Phil Blamire as Rector of the Weybourne Group of Parishes, the Reverend Frank Clarke was Licensed and Installed as Interim Priest-in-Charge of the group by the Bishop of Lynn, the Right Reverend Jonathan Meyrick, and the Archdeacon of Lynn, the Venerable Ian Bentley, at a service at Weybourne Church on Thursday 23rd January, at which members of the Reverend Frank's family and the congregation were present, together with clergy colleagues.

On Tuesday 14 January, after a very tasty lunch, Peter Lawrence gave a fascinating talk called ‘Beneath the City Streets’.

The Anson VX-B (K6183) was the first of Bircham Newton’s aircraft to be shot down in World War 2 on 5 September 1939, just two days after Britain declared war on Germany. The story of this plane and its fortunate New Zealand pilot, who survived to become one of the first prisoners of the war, can be read in the RAF Heritage Centre. The Heritage Centre at Bircham Newton has a unique collection of memorabilia from the former Royal Air Force station’s past service, which spanned more than 44 years, including two world wars and the Cold War. On display are photographs and personal memories of servicemen who served there and other related items from its fascinating history.

Peter introduced himself as a former Metropolitan Police officer working in Special Operations at Scotland Yard, looking after the Royal Family and the Embassies. Unusually, he was tasked with investigating underneath the streets of London!

Peter explained that subterranean London comprised a network of rivers (for example, the Westbourne, Tyburn and Fleet), tunnels (including the Tube and the old Post Office railway system, now a tourist attraction) and sewers. Archaeological finds from Roman, Saxon and medieval times reveal the layers of London’s history, Peter specifically mentioning the Temple of Mithras (which one can see free of charge) and the crypt beneath St Bride’s Church in Fleet Street.

The ‘Great Stink’ of 1858 led to Joseph Bazalgette building a new government-funded sewer system. The massive project involved using 315 million bricks and 25,000 labourers. Bazalgette also built architecturally amazing pumping stations in strategic places; they were cathedrals to sewage! To support and hide the sewers along the Thames, Bazalgette created the vast embankments that still exist today. The construction work made the river narrower, thus turning the Central London part of the Thames into a canal. At the end of the talk, Peter proposed wryly that we should close the M25 (not his favourite motorway!) and put the traffic underground, acknowledging that using tunnels in this way was not a new idea!

Getting married is a legal contract. that’s why people need a lawyer to get ‘unmarried’; or, at least, the legal system oversees and regulates divorce.

The legal act with the lowest level of mental capacity necessary is that of marrying. That could explain a lot, ha ha; I hear you say!

The Court of Protection, which is the section of the court system which oversees the affairs of those unable to manage them for themselves, has recently granted permission for a 28-yearold man to marry his fiancée, even though he lacks mental capacity to manage his property and affairs.

The groom, called “P” in the reporting of the case, so as to protect his identity, has had learning difficulties since childhood. The loss of his leg in a road traffic accident resulted in him receiving an injury compensation award of £1,500,000. Adrian Mundell, P’s ‘deputy’ (i.e. the person appointed to manage P’s finances) spent P’s compensation on buying P a home and has invested the rest for P.

Early in 2019 P announced his intention to marry a woman, whom he met three years ago and who now lives with him in his home, along with her two children. One is tempted to ask Caroline Aherne’s question, on the eponymous Mrs Merton chat show, to Debbie McGee:

Adrian had serious concerns about P’s decision to marry, and especially its financial implications. P had made a Will leaving everything to his parents; but as marriage revokes a Will, P would be intestate and his new wife his primary beneficiary, if P died. Adrian felt he had to take steps and so applied to the Court to prevent the marriage. As a reason he gave P’s privately-expressed indecision about the marriage and the doctor’s assessment that P is easily persuaded, has difficulty saying ‘no’, is very vulnerable and is open to being exploited. Adrian was concerned that P did not understand that if he married, and then divorced, his wife would have a financial claim. Adrian applied to the Court for a declaration that P did not have mental capacity to marry.

The judge did not agree. He noted that P had already been considered to have capacity to make a Will, for which the necessary degree of mental capacity is ‘higher than that needed validly to contract a marriage’. He said that people can have capacity to marry, without needing to understand how divorce financial arrangements work.

The judge said that the amount of P’s

compensation had been for his needs alone, and so, if the marriage went ahead and then ended in divorce, the scope of the claim of the wife would “necessarily be extremely limited”. The judge added that there were numerous legal authorities which have emphasised the near-immunity of a personal injury award from a divorce financial claim, and so, the divorcing-wife’s claim would be limited to relieving her serious financial hardship only.

And so, let us hope that they both live happily ever after.

Find me a woman in her 40s who doesn’t want to knock a few years off her appearance!

With many friends now in their late forties, several have snuck off to have various forms of cosmetic enhancement, whether it be dental implants/whitening, breast implants or the odd dose of Botox.

As for me, both bank balance and intuition advised to grow old gracefully!

But all worthy intentions fast evaporated when the opportunity came to visit Dr Gheyi at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. What I really wanted him to tackle was something that no amounts of facials (a private addiction) seemed able to fade – horrible, horrible age spots.

From my early forties, these dark freckles have been multiplying. I’ve already got the hands of an octogenarian, but hands don’t really bother me. It’s the face that counts. I can just about grin and bear laughter lines, and gravity’s pull hasn’t yet begun in earnest, but these dark spots really annoy me. I’ve tried every concealer imaginable – and none of them work. If anything, they highlight the problem.

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is situated in new buildings just outside Wroxham. Dr Sanjay Gheyi is the man in charge, and the fact that he is a practicing GP four days a week at Coltishall Surgery, and regularly attends medical conferences worldwide on the subject of cosmetic enhancement, is immensely reassuring. The clinic boasts some pretty hefty equipment – and the last thing one wants is a novice at the driving wheel! We’ve all heard horror stories of how relatively simple procedures can go wildly wrong!

For the first session, Dr Gheyi did an overview of my skin, focussing on the age spots. He explained he could treat them with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) which would fade them, if not cause them to disappear completely. He also stressed the need to wear sun screen each and every day of the year. But I do wear sunscreen, Doctor, honest. He pointed out that it’s often easy to forget the sides of one’s face when applying cream of any type – which is exactly where my sun spots are appearing.

Dr Gheyi took some particularly ghastly photos of the age spots, which he blew up and showed me on screen. This was by far the worst part of the session - a brown spot which maybe measures 3 millimetres at most was suddenly expanded to 30cms in diameter – and looked like a nasty explosion of molten toffee. Photo session over, Dr Gheyi asked me to hop up onto the couch, and relax. He wanted to test the IPL procedure out on me to see how I’d react.

Whilst I put on the black-out glasses, Dr Gheyi explained what IPL actually is. Intense pulsed light is a broadband light within the visible spectrum. To a lay person, it amounts to short sharp bursts of very, very bright light. No UVA or UVB is involved, and the treatment is utterly safe. The IPL laser machine is top spec – rather than one of the cheaper portable versions that beauty salons tend to use.

The IPL laser machine began to hum into action and Dr Gheyi fiddled with various buttons to set it to deliver the correct duration of pulse, and strength of light energy for my skin. He then did a test run on the largest of the spots. The sensation was rather like an elastic band twanging on one’s skin – not exactly painful, just a little strange. The area was a bit hot and tingly for a couple of hours afterwards but soon settled down. I was told to avoid sun for the next 48 hours, and to rebook for a follow-up session when treatment would commence in earnest! In the meantime, I could expect the age spot that had been zapped to possibly turn browner, before beginning to fade. At best, Dr Gheyi said the pigment might rise to the surface, and simply flake off.

Two weeks later, by which time the spot had definitely faded, I turned up for a full session with Dr Gheyi. This time the IPL machine was set to a slightly higher level, and the zapping process began in earnest! Again, there was no discomfort during or after the treatment which lasted a mere ten minutes, and in next to no time I was back in Norwich trying out the various tester potions that Dr Gheyi had given me. They’re all made by the American company, Agera, and amounted to a facial cleanser, a serum, a retinol based cream, a moisturizer and a sun block. This is skin care with expertise but without frills – the products are unscented and highly tested/medically researched. I used them for a week. In all honesty, I can say that my skin felt a lot smoother than usual, and the sunscreen in particular was brilliant – non-greasy, and making my skin feel silky

Three weeks later, I returned for my final session. By this time the offending spot had faded to being almost unnoticeable, and when I happened to mention where I was going to friends and family, and then pointed to the offending age spot, I was met with looks suggesting I was mad to worry about such an inconsequential blot! A final blast with the IPL, and within two weeks, just in time for Christmas, the sun spots had gone!

All well and good, except now I’m vaguely hooked! Maybe try micro-dermoabrasion, depilation (via IPL) and filling treatment (botox or restylane). Watch this space …

RAF Air Defence Radar Museum - Grant from Love of the Broads

The RAF Air Defence Radar Museum is proud to announce the success of a recent application for grant funding from Love of the Broads. The grant will initially be used to record volunteers' memories in regard to their service years at RRH Neatished.

Stage two of this project will be recording visitors and former Neatishead personnel who may wish to share similar stories. Manager Lynn Kerslake said she was delighted that this project has now come to fruition.

Grateful thanks go to Love of the Broads as it now gives the Museum funding to purchase relative equipment and funding to display these precious memories both in digital/audio format.

Accepting the cheque in January in the Cold War Room at the Museum was Trustees Carl Lamb and Nick Farmer, along with Peter Howe from Love of the Broads.
