Sheringham RNLI shop volunteers named as one of the top retail arms in the country Continued from front cover...
By the end of 2019, both the Sheringham High Street and Station shops were declared as one of the top four retail arms in the country, alongside Tenby, Whitby and Poole.
This is particularly amazing as the High Street shop faced challenges as visitor numbers were down, and the forecast for sales was not good. It is with great thanks to our loyal customers, dedicated volunteers and the extraordinary spirit of Sheringham locals that this success has been achieved.
Sheringham Lifeboat Operations Manage, Brian Farrow, said 'The success of our Lifeboat Shops in our small town of Sheringham is entirely due to the consistent hard work of our volunteers, led by the two shop managers. It is so fantastic to see their hard work has paid off.

SHAW’LY OUR BEST SHOW YET?
on the evening of Valentine’s Day, the Copeman Centre in Hall Street in briston was packed with nearly 100 romantic live-music lovers to hear the amazing keyboard player and vocalist Pete Shaw weave his brand of musical magic.
Having travelled all the way from North Wales to be with us, he played his two Korg keyboards and pedals combined instrument to perfection. From a super, really speedy Theatre organ medley, he progressed through such delights as ‘The Look Of Love’ Winter Aglow - which he sang as well, then the 'Thunderbirds March’, a very realistic Stephan Grapelli and Django Reinhard violin and guitar When sunlight sparkles on cobwebs, jazz set, to a full orchestra version of ‘Ave Maria’ and ended up When seed heads put on a brave show, playing a solid half-hour non-stop medley of popular film and When ice freezes puddles and bird baths, TV themes, and as an encore, we had ‘633 Squadron’ and the See the brilliance of Winter aglow. ‘Dambusters March', complete with the sounds of bombs dropping, When frost patterns grow on the windows, the air-raid siren, and even the mighty bells of Big Ben! (he had When the moonlight glides over the snow, them, even if Brexit didn’t!) When icicles capture the sunlight, It was an all-round incredible evening of the best in live music, and See the splendour of Winter aglow. with the raffle and refreshments making a bonus of £189 for the When winds blow through chimneys and Copeman Centre, and our ongoing charity fundraising for ORBIS, key holes, Ian House the Flying Eye Hospital (which incidentally has been chosen by When Nature is on a go-slow, the Farnborough Air Show as their charity of the year - the ORBIS We huddle in woollies and slippers, aircraft will be visiting during the show) getting a further £56.60 from our generous audience. Snuggled up with our warm fire aglow! Our next show is on Friday 27 March, when another amazing keyboard player will be visiting us, Don’t just look upon Winter’s bleak side, the extremely talented Ian House! Tickets for the show are available now by telephoning our The starkness of field and hedgerow, Carol on 01263 860844, and are just £6 each. Shows start at 7.30pm, and with comfortable seats, It has many beautiful facets, great acoustics, easy free parking and wide level access, it really is a night out for everyone, See the glory of Winter aglow! young or not so young, indeed, anyone who loves the best in live music! THE MAD HATTER VISITS WEYBOURNE WI
Our February meeting began with member Dorothy re-reading our contribution to the Noreaster group carol service, an extract from All Creatures Great & Small describing a Yorkshire Christmas, to an enthralled audience.
The agenda took us through setting dates for the various spin off activity groups to the selection of a local charity to support for the ensuing year, with Nelson’s Journey being eventually chosen. The main event was provided by Colin Rawlings, proprietor of The Red Dot Gallery in Holt together with Barrie Morris, illustrator and researcher of a beautifully illustrated book ‘Quirks and Quiddities of Norfolk’ which covers many curious characters ranging from Ann Boleyn’s Ghost to the Vicar of Stiffkey.
On to the character of most interest to us Colin, dressed in the style of The Mad Hatter of Weybourne introduced Barrie who explained that during his research he had ascertained that in the 1970’s Patrick Townend aka The Mad Hatter had given up a career in city banking to ‘entertain the people’. His antics included running an antique shop from which hardly anything was sold to blagging drinks and food from diners in the local hostelry. Love him or loathe him he was a notable eccentric worthy of inclusion in Barrie’s charming book available from The Red Dot Gallery.
Our meetings are held in the village hall on the first Wednesday afternoon of each month.
Scientific breakthrough evolves into family fun
A musical comedy show featuring famous scientist Charles Darwin as its unlikely star will entertain families at Sheringham Little Theatre on Sunday 8 March.
‘The Origin of the Species’ tells the story of how Darwin took 20 years to pluck up courage to publish his ground-breaking work on the evolution of creatures. The 19th century hero is played by John Hinton from touring drama company Tangram Theatre. The fun family-friendly event, aimed from youngsters aged seven upwards, sees Charles sharing his own family history, songs he has written and some new discoveries about barnacles – before he learns another naturalist has come up with a theory about evolution which spurs him into action.
The show involves terrible puns, physical comedy, and songs about everything from barnacles to the perils of marrying your cousin.
John Hinton in the role of Charles Darwin in ‘The Origin ‘The Origin of the Species’ is of Species’ at Sheringham Little Theatre on Sunday 8 March at 3pm. Tickets (adults £9, students / u16s £6, family £25) available from the box office on 01263 822347 or www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Clinical Negligence – When is medical treatment negligent?
The value of clinical negligence claims against the NHS was reported this week as being in excess of £80bn. A number of issues arise out of the reports, including the extent to which the NHS is learning from previous mistakes, defensive medicine and the standard of care provided to patients across all disciplines of medicine.
of scans, blood and tissue samples, which is a slightly different standard. One notable development in recent years is the extent to which medical staff are required to inform patients about the risks associated with particular treatment or surgery. Courts have found that, even when surgery or treatment has been carried out non-negligently, but medical staff have given insufficient information about the risks of that treatment, a claim could succeed. Medical staff are under a greater duty to both consider the risks of treatment and inform patients of them in order for a valid informed consent to be given.
The issue of whether care provided to a patient is negligent or not will depend very much on the type of care provided.
Care, for these purposes, includes the interpretation of investigations, for example x-rays and blood samples, the provision of information regarding treatment options, including surgery and prescription drugs, as well as any surgery or non-invasive treatment provided.
Clinical negligence claims are frequently complex, and it is important that anyone considering such a claim seeks advice at the earliest opportunity. To arrange an appointment with one of our clinical negligence specialists, or to discuss your individual circumstances in further detail, contact our Client Relations Team today on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk
Although the standards by which treatment will be judged by the Courts continue to evolve, there are a number of areas where the picture is becoming clearer.
The long-standing principles in the leading cases of Bolam and Bolitho still exist, but are applied more sparingly, for instance, the decision of a medical professional to follow one of a number of choices regarding a patient's care must still be one that a reasonable body of medical opinion would adopt and which stands up to logical scrutiny.

Sustaining Self
February’s Sustainable Saturday gathering at the Quaker Friends Meeting House, Sheringham saw an enlarged group participate in discussion stemming from a talk given by Judy Miller on ‘Sustaining Self’.
Judy is experienced in Natural Therapeutics, Nutritional Therapy, Massage, Naturopathic Technique, Hydrotherapy and Lymph Drainage. Taking a dictionary definition of sustainability - “the quality of being able to continue [something] over a period of time” Judy proposed that we live in, and are, an ecosystem which, if observed and cared for, can provide solutions to our own problems.
Central to our ability to heal ourselves, according to Ms Miller, is our reconnecting with Nature and reintegrating the ‘material,’ ‘emotional’ and ‘spiritual’ aspects of who we are. As we work on the personal, far from being an atomised, individualistic approach, we find ourselves engaging with the environment and with the wider community in which we live. “Sustainable Saturday” is but one example of many local, interactive
initiatives that are embracing personal and environmental concerns along with a desire to explore and share how we can live sustainably, both personally and communally.
The key to naturopathic philosophy is partly to be found in the survival structure outlined in Mazlow’s Hierarchy of Need. Helpful in exploring such sustainability in any practice or process is: “If we carry on as we are, will this be sustainable?” And we know more than we think we know. For example, we know when we are being misinformed; we know which food is good for us.
Sustainable Saturday’s convener, Sue Hanson, moderated the discussion and then the floor was given to Sheringham’s deputy Mayor, Liz Withington, who, among other matters, told us of Greening Sheringham activities such as a planned Community Orchard at Sheringham Allotments, where 30 fruit trees are to be planted on 14 March next.
The next Sustainable Saturday meeting will be 14 March 10am - 12pm. The speakers will be

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Although there has been lots of interest in the cats in care, most are still with us as it is important to make sure that the home environment is right for a particular cat, especially if it has a timid nature. Unfortunately, most of these would not be happy in a home where there are young children or dogs as they do need a quiet environment. Homes with experienced cat owners ready and willing to give them plenty of time to settle are ideal as they will not be put off if the cat hides when it first arrives. Over the years we have seen many cats like this and all have been very loving companions once they gain confidence and often turn out to be the most rewarding. Otto and Olga, rehomed by us last year are two prime examples. Both took a little time to settle and both are now very loving lap cats.
It is also important to remember when coming to visit the cats to offer them a new home, that being in a cat pen is not their natural environment. Although the pens are much larger nowadays and do have an area where they can play, as well as a nice warm housing unit with heaters and heat pads, compared to living in a house they are quite small. When someone comes to view them, the cat often finds itself surrounded by people and is unable to get away. Although some cats might enjoy this attention (cats like lovely Octopussy) many will feel threatened and you may not see them at their best. We therefore suggest that it is best to take things slowly, and on entering the pen one at a time, wait for the cat to come to you. They may still be hesitant so be guided by the information given by their carer to appreciate how they react with people they know and are used to. Cats are naturally solitary creatures but some do enjoy sharing their homes with animals including other cats. Those that come into care from multi cat households will often enjoy having a companion, however, we have had instances where a cat has blossomed once on its own. If you are looking for a new cat please listen to the advice their carers give you as they are committed to making sure their
charges find the ideal home.
Our fundraising this year commences with a collection at Morrisons store in Cromer on Monday 23 March. Please support Barbara, who organises the collections, and her friends who will be there raising money for the cats in care.
Pud Pud, no longer hiding behind the sofa If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). Hedgehog Haven
On a wet and windy Sunday 16 February Valentine was found out during the day, very wet, cold, weak and thin.
The first thing to do when a hog comes into care like this is to gently get them warm as offering food will do more harm than good.
The next morning I was able to syringe feed him some rehydration fluid and later in the day some diluted food.
At the moment I am syringe feeding three hourly until he is strong enough to feed himself.

Visitors welcome!
From pre-historic to present day – North Norfolk Visitor Centre celebrates official opening and introduction of fun new 'Discover Zone'
The North Norfolk Visitor Centre was officially opened on Monday 10 February, with an exciting reveal of the brand new look for the tourist information hub. As well as the traditional visitor information service the centre now also includes a ‘Discovery Zone’, a fantastic new resource which forms part of North Norfolk District Council’s “Deep History Coast” initiative.
Council members, project partners, staff and business Ambassadors gathered for the celebration, which included a screening of the new DHC film and representatives on-hand to discuss the key project elements from fossil hunting to the upcoming mammoth Marathon.
In a speech to the assembly, Cllr. Virginia Gay, NNDC’s Portfolio Holder for Culture and
Wellbeing said “The centre will explain the evolution of our coastline and the wealth of evidence that puts our area among the most historically significant in the world. It will tell a story which goes back hundreds of thousands of years - a story that was mostly unknown when I first became a councillor. And the very best thing about it is that this story is still unfolding.”
The newly renovated Visitor Centre features audio-visual, interactiveand tactile displays showcasing the incredible history of the area and continuing evolution of our coastline. New treasures are unearthed on our beaches every day from common fossils to finds, such as the West Runton mammoth and Happisburgh footprints, which help shape our understanding of Britain’s earliest inhabitants.
On the walls and shelves you can find DHC merchandise and displays with Augmented Reality scenes bringing the past to life through the mobile app. The app is free to download and explorers can use it to continue their journey with a trail
SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY
map, fossil finder and collector journal as well as useful updates on tide times and weather and locations of local cafe's, shop, pubs and accommodation providers connected with the project. Users of the app can bring a Mammoth and a Hominin family to life in the palm of their hands, or take a mammoth selfie with a number of other pre-historic animals.
The Visitor Centre welcomes all explorers, and encourages them to discover North Norfolk’s rich geological and archaeological past. There is also information on our local businesses and attractions, many of whom are signed up as Ambassadors to the project. The toilet facilities have also seen a complete redevelopment, including the installation of a Changing Places accessible toilet facility.
The Visitor Centre is the perfect point from which to learn more about the ‘Discovery Trail’, a series of 11 interactive sites stretching along the 22 miles of coastline between Weybourne and Cart Gap. These installations reveal even more fascinating content when used in conjunction with the Deep History Coast app.
The Society’s AGM took place on Monday 10 February and was well attended.
The committee were unanimously voted to continue their good work. A discussion on the merits of holding meetings in the afternoons during the winter period were discussed but it was decided to continue with evening meetings throughout the year.
Your property in safe hands for generations
A sale of philatelic items, which had been passed on to the Society, followed the business side of things and resulted in a donation of £32.25 to an Alzheimer’s charity and another £32.25 to Club funds.
Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of property sales and purchases with care and professionalism.
The next meeting will be on 9 March, at the usual venue of West Runton Church Hall, at 7.30pm. Jim Farrell, the Society’s secretary, will present ‘Pages from my Albums’. If you would be interested in coming to this meeting, or finding out more about becoming a member, please contact Jerry on 01263 579529 or Jim on 01263 721043

North Norfolk Guide Dog Support Forum for visually impaired just gets bigger and better by working together with Vision Norfolk
The North Norfolk Support Forum is inclusive for sharing information for people who are blind or partially sighted (regardless of whether you are a service user of a guide dog), their families, friends, or carers.
People who want to or do volunteer for guide dogs, supporters and fund raisers.
During 2019 North Norfolk co-ordinators looked at how to increase the attendance of this meeting forum, and whilst moving forum from North Walsham to Cromer did help, we can still do more to help more people with sight loss.
Every Tuesday, Vision Norfolk holds a coffee morning for those with sight loss. Guide Dogs strategy ‘By My Side’ states Guide Dogs as an organisation want to go from supporting 250,000 people to 500,000 in five years. This does not mean providing 500,000 guide dogs!
Chris from Sheringham, visually impaired and guide dog owner plus volunteer forum coordinator, comments "We are delighted to announce, Vision Norfolk (formerly Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind - NNAB) have agreed to allow us to combine four of their coffee mornings with our Guide Dogs Support Forum allowing us to have a greater reach, and continue to attract more people with visual loss and engage varied speakers covering technical/educational support, and social activities for visually impaired friends and families".
Forum dates to add to your diaries are 17 March, 14 July and 10 November 10am to 1pm at Merchants Court in Cromer. Contact Chris Waller Chrisgwaller@googlemail.com 07568156766if you have any Support can be in many different forms, using different services but also questions, or require more information, including becoming a volunteer ensuring we effectively signpost to other organisations and have good supporting this leading charity for visually impaired or visit the relations with those organisations too. Attending groups and being part Facebook page for North Norfolk Guide Dog Support Forum of something is a vital way to improve networking and own sense of www.facebook.com/North-Norfolk-Guide-Dog-Forumwell-being. 11398032582731/?ref=bookmarks www.rosevillapublications.co.uk Sheringham Independent Issue 530 28th February 2020 12

Anglian Air Ambulance and attend the Norfolk Show Ball on Friday 26 June at the Norfolk Showground.
Join East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) for an amazing evening of fine food and entertainment to mark the charity’s 20th anniversary. The event will celebrate the incredible community which has made 20 years of saving lives across East Anglia possible.
Inspired by the 19th-century industrial era, the ball theme is ‘Magnificent Men and Women and their flying machines’, encouraging guests to get creative with the dress code and add a steampunk twist to the normal black tie.
This exclusive event will offer guests the opportunity to be amongst the first to hear how the charity has evolved over the past 20 years and its future plans, as it gets closer to launching a 24/7 service by helicopter from Norwich. Tickets will include a drinks reception on the lawn, followed by a four-course dinner alongside charity staff, crew and supporters.
Phillipa Levy, Special Events Fundraiser, said “It’s a huge honour for the charity to have been selected as the beneficiary of the Norfolk Show Ball this year. Not only does the event help us to celebrate our 20th anniversary,

Lemon and Cardamom Biscuits
It’s not long to go now until one of favourite occasions of the year, Mother’s Day, and what better to surprise the relevant person with than a batch of these wonderful biscuits (and she thought you couldn’t cook!)
The kitchen brigade often whip these up in a quiet moment and they are always very well received by the staff, though they don’t last very long…
If you are after a special Mother’s Day then we still have a couple of spaces left for Afternoon Tea on Sunday 22nd March – but book quickly because they are going fast. Or alternatively treat her to a lovely three-course dinner; we are open every evening

Ingredients • 225g butter, softened • 150g caster sugar • 1 lemon, zest only • 250g plain flour • 100g ground almonds • 3 tsp ground cardamom or 1 heaped tsp cardamom seeds, ground in a pestle and mortar
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5. Line 2 large baking trays with baking parchment. 2. Using an electric hand-whisk, beat the butter, sugar and lemon zest together in a large bowl until pale and fluffy. 3. Beat in the flour, almonds and cardamom until the mixture is well combined and comes together to form a stiff dough. 4. Roll the dough into 24 balls and place 12 on each baking tray – make sure you leave space between each one. 5. Press each cookie with a cookie stamp or the bottom of a glass to flatten and leave decorative indentations in the dough. 6. Bake a tray at a time for 12–14 minutes until the cookies are pale golden brown. 7. Leave them to cool on the tray for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. They will crisp up as they cool. Store the cookies in an airtight tin and eat within 7 days.

Cromer Flower Club launched into 2020 with floral demonstrator David Wright. His chosen subject was 'A Tour of The Broads'. He had taken inspiration from his many cycling trips around our wonderful Broads and transferred them into an array of beautiful arrangements.

Noreen Hawes eloquently expressed our thanks to David for such an inspiring demonstration. The Club held its own members’ competition titled 'Three Flowers & Foliage' which was won by Alison Morris in the Novice Class. Alison also took Best in Show.
We started with the Cricket Green at Ashmanhaugh then onto Ranworth Church with glorious sunflowers & yellow roses framing a clock face. Amongst the notices Horsey Mill was the next given by Chairman Hazel Horsey Mill pit stop captured in his were letters of thanks for interpretation of the Broads' the £100 we had raised for Nelson's Journey banks. Sally Marchant S.A.C. Dip RFHP Mobile Foot Health Practice
On Tuesday 4 February, after a delicious lunch, Stuart Fidler, a Falklands veteran and a past President of the Probus Club of Norwich, gave a fascinating talk called ‘The Falklands War – My Personal Journey’. Stuart enjoyed a varied military career, starting in 1960 as a radio operator in the Royal Navy on the frigate HMS Rocket. After further postings on frigates and an aircraft carrier, he tired of ships and in 1965, after commando and parachute training, joined 148 Commando and served in Borneo. Four years later, Stuart became an air traffic controller, then moved on to Mobile Air Operations, setting up helicopter landing sites. In 1980, he started working at RAF Watton Eastern Radar, monitoring aircraft movements over Norfolk and the east coast. When the Falklands War erupted in 1982, Stuart was summoned to Yeovilton and on 12 May sailed from Southampton on the QE2, being the only naval officer with the 5th Infantry Brigade. Stuart took part in movements in and around the islands and was involved in the final attack on Stanley from Mount Tumbledown in extremely difficult conditions over rough terrain in freezing temperatures. Quotations by soldiers and the story of Lieutenant Lawrence, MC, who bravely stormed a machine gun nest during the Battle of Mount Tumbledown before being severely wounded by a sniper, reminded us of the courage and sacrifice involved in war. On behalf of the 33 members, one guest and one visitor present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Stuart for his interesting talk. Our next meeting at the Links Hotel in West Runton will be held on Tuesday 3 March when award-winning author Phyllida Scrivens will give a talk called ‘Escaping Hitler – Biography of Joe Stirling, Sheriff of Norwich’. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our monthly meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

YOU WILL BE VERY WELCOME AT ALL AND ANY OF THESE EVENTS Sheringham Independent Issue 530 28th February 2020
Sheringham Football Club v Felixstowe & Walton Res 9/2/20 On the Suffolk coast, the Reds With top scorer, Tim, out And no goals in our last two games Did not expect a rout! But two minutes was all it took For goals to flow again, And what a busy afternoon The ref had with his pen!
Dan Crosby started off the spree From close range: firing home; And then his tasty long-range ball Saw Coxy, airborne, roam!
He guided it into the frame A finish full of gloss That doubled up the Shannock's lead, A beauty from The Boss! Young Wilson, on his full debut Impressed right from the start; And when given the ball to run Tore Felixstowe apart!
He placed the third goal nice and cool And then - step up the Cheese... With opportunities galore The big man said, 'Yes please!'
He finished calm when through he ran But strangely, come the break, Although 4-0 was excellent Yet more was there to take!
After the restart, Boycey's shot Flew high (into the trees), And soon, a strange jaw-dropping miss Occurred through Lawrence Cheese. But no problem, as on he fought, There was no need to fret. And shortly after, our forward Would bulge the home side's net.
Some silky footwork from Wilson And Ben Boyce - nice and slick, Set up the forward for his brace... And then for his hat-trick!
Great teamwork and Boycey's volley Added number seven, Then, with only minutes left We were in Rogers heaven! Dan received encouragement The vocal travelling crowd Spurred him on with great banter (Much of it rather loud!)
Clean through he charged determined-like The keeper just to beat... And bang - the net rippled again From Danny's dancing feet! There is no match for us next week, On this - we'll reminisce! But on Jan 22nd, we At The Rec take on Diss! Tony Bolster

Blur drummer and Norfolk County Councillor Dave Rowntree will open a new family fun run event on a private estate near Aylsham. Bring It On Burgh, a 5km mixed-terrain route, will start in beautiful parkland which has never before been open to the public. Runners will pass through a picturesque unspoilt water meadow set against the backdrop of the River Bure, and past a stunning English Heritage monument. The event in Burgh-next-Aylsham is the brainchild of Susie Anderson, the daughter of the landowner, who was inspired to organise the fundraiser after two people close to her were diagnosed with cancer. Dedicated to raising funds for Cancer Research UK, the run will finish in a specially set-up ‘village’ with live music, artisan food and drink, holistic treatments and a ‘Tree of Hope’ and remembrance. The bands booked are DGAS women’s acoustic African drumming group, Polymer 5, BroadBeat Choir and Spangle Pans. “Cancer touches all of our lives in some form, be it personally, family member, friend or colleague,” says Susie. “My initial reaction when I found out that my cousin and best friend had both been diagnosed with cancer was that of shock and helplessness, but I got the seeds of an idea to try and put on an event to raise some money for Cancer Research UK and I love running, so I put the two together and it gathered pace from there.” The event on Saturday 20 June, at Wood Lane, Burgh-Next-Aylsham, has already attracted support from local companies such as Barnwell Print and Quotatis Ltd, and tickets are on sale for £15 on the Bring It On Burgh website. The organisers are also seeking non-runner volunteers to marshal on the day. More information www.bringitonburgh.co.uk, @bringitonburgh.co.uk or #bringitonburgh
