Sheringham Viking Festival
Inclement weather, and unruly tides could not stop this year’s Scira Viking Festival. The event’s 8th year saw a massive tourist turnout and marks the most successful year yet for the North Norfolk event.
Throughout the day, visitors could enjoy axe throwing, and many fascinating living history camps across the town. How does it feel to wear chainmail? How did Vikings cook their food? These questions and more were engagingly answered on the day. Across Sheringham esplanade there were many tent stalls offering an unbelievable range of dark age trinkets and artefacts. There were animal furs and jewellery; weapons and mead horns. Photo: Gareth Continued on Gabriel page 4...

Sheringham Viking Festival
Continude from front cover... A savage battle waged on Sheringham Beach at 1pm (brought forward one hour by the tide). The sounds of clashing steel and the hard grind of the shield wall reverberated up the promenade with fierce battle cries. A truly fine performance by Wuffa Viking and Saxon Reenactment Society.
festival. There were warriors in authentic Viking helmets with that distinctly prominent noseguard and riveted bowl, some wearing thick tunics with chain mail. There were women in a dazzling variety of wool, linen, and animal skins. Some were wearing the iconic Viking pinafore, otherwise known as the hangerok.
mostly in the opposite direction to the visitors and spectators on the beach.
The weekend was a fitting climax after five days preparation and of exciting children’s workshops during the half-term. The family craft events such as make-your-own Viking mask, and the sword and shield workshop at Oddfellows Hall saw a record turnout.
There were impressive beards and other facial hair on display. Such hirsute physiognomies give ‘No Shave November’ a run for its money.
There were some amazing costumes to be seen, worn by reenactors and others throughout the
Festival founder and artist Colin Seal was very pleased with the event and was glad to see such a huge success despite adverse weather conditions.
The Saturday ended with a torchlight parade from Sheringham Station down to the beach. Here the Viking Longship was spectacularly burned in a strong wind that, thankfully, blew
Kelling Probus Club
Story by Isaac C-Knight Photos Courtesy of Robin Myerscough
Frankly, I expected a rather depressing treaty but what an uplifting experience for us in discovering the kindness and professionalism with which the desperate souls who contact them are heard - not judged, encouraged and often averted from suicide. All this with no official support and solely financed by donations.
Kelling Probus met for our February meeting at the usual venue, The Dales Country Club, with a good turnout of members.
The as usual superb lunch was met with unusual glee as it was a rather good bangers and mash! Our delight was compounded by a superb dessert of chocolate torte with a sponge base and ice cream.
Our next meeting is an AGM on 19 March.
Again, our best wishes to all and our thanks to The Dales.

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT
Although the afternoon of 28 February was very wet and blustery, the morning was much better weather wise, perfect to be able to enjoy the ‘Big Brew’ Coffee Morning, our main event of Fairtrade Fortnight.
We were delighted to meet many people, including Duncan Baker, MP and Madeleine Ashcroft, Mayor of
Sheringham - I'm sure they were happy with the coffee and tea, home-made cakes and biscuits, the quiz, prizeevery-timetombola and guess-the costof-the-basketof-food - all Fairtrade!
yields – for example with seeds which are drought resistant.
We greatly appreciate your continued support, and also that of our local Sainsbury and Tesco stores.
The correct price for the food basket was £49.50, and the winner was Lynda. Fairtrade for Sheringham Group (besmith30a@ gmail.com)
We have sent almost £200 to Fairtrade Exchange which will help to change the lives of farmers and craft workers in the developing World and to increase their
IT’S BRAIN OF BRISTON TIME AGAIN! It’s that time of year again when people rush to exercise their quizzing skills (or lack of them!) when the Copeman Centre at Briston once again puts on one of its legendary ‘Pictures and Sounds’ quiz nights.
The date for this one is Saturday 25 April , the time is 7pm, and the sounds, pictures and video clues on the big screen will come at you fast and furious - some easy, some hard, some that need lateral thinking, and some just downright funny! For just a fiver, you get the quiz, a Jacket Potato supper, a pudding, and tea or coffee.
If you want to bring your own wobbly juice, we can even supply glasses!
We are looking for teams of four, but we always have a few odd people (you know what we mean!) who can make up the numbers - and some of them are actually quite clever! There is a prize for the winning team, and also a booby prize for the team who gets the same number of points as the UK does in Eurovision. It’s all great fun, and everyone is welcome - book now by telephoning 01263 860844 - and advance booking is essential - we had to turn loads of last-minute would-be quizzers away last time as we were full! As usual with our quizzes, all proceeds will benefit the Copeman Centre’s fundraising.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2020? 20 20 ?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an info ormed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2020 to come and meet me fa ace to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Work Starts on Electric Charge points in public car parks Project aims to make Electric Vehicles accessible
North Norfolk District Council has commenced the installation of Electric Vehicle Charge Points (EVCPs) in six public car parks across the District following the confirmation of grant funding from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV). The £200,000 project will be funded jointly by the Council and OLEV and will futureproof car parks in local towns as electric vehicle numbers rise.

John Tams has been described by Mojo as ‘one of the ultimate British songwriters’. Barry Coope has a long history in the folk music scene. Barry is a great keyboard player, and master of harmonious singing.
The Canada Boys
Friday March 27th March
Back again by popular demand and with its original cast Rob John’s muchloved play sets off on its third regional tour. Set in 1912, The Canada Boys is based on the true story of a group of workers at J & J Colman. The Canada Boys is a play about ambition, love, duty, family and mustard?
OLEV is a Cross-Government team which aims to promote the use of electric vehicles. The grant funding helps councils to provide the infrastructure necessary to facilitate their introduction.
NNDC proposes to install EVCPs in Council owned car parks in Sheringham, Cromer, Holt, Fakenham, Wells and North Walsham. The EVCs use ‘GeniePoint’, a web-based system for managing vehicle charging; the website allows customers to top up credit and sends a text message when charging is complete.
The project aims to help meet the expected rise in demand for electric vehicles from around 250,000 currently to 6 million on the road by 2030. It has been identified that most Electric Vehicle users will charge their vehicles at home. By installing these facilities in areas where many nearby properties do not have their own off-street parking, the Council aims to provide charging points and make Electric Vehicles more accessible to both residents and visitors. Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We are delighted to bring forward this new initiative which will see 34 Electric Vehicle Charge points introduced to our car parks across the District. This is just the first step on the Council’s path towards delivering our new ‘greener’ agenda. Whilst we are working to reduce our own Carbon footprints we want to help residents and visitors to play their part too.”

Countryside Rangers celebrated the opening of the exciting new facility, which includes a modern zip line, bug see-saw, and 3 different swings, one of which is an inclusive bucket swing and a ‘me & you’ swing where parents and toddlers can swing together.
The new area replaces the old playground, which stood in place for 12 years and needed updating, and was funded by North Norfolk District Council to provide a modern children’s play area for the thousands of visitors to the Green Flag Award winning park.
The ribbon was cut by Leader of NNDC, Cllr Sarah Bütikofer with help from youngsters and their families already enjoying the new attractions, and cakes were provided by the on-site tea room, Hetty’s House, to mark the occasion.
Cllr Bütikofer, said “We all know the important role play has in the education of our younger residents. Although she will be selling the goods already donated, she has advised that once these have been sold sales at her home will cease. She also asks that no more goods are brought to her to sell. She thanks everyone who has Izzy, timid young girl needs a new home purchased goods from without young children or dogs. She is happy her over the years, living with other cats. with 2019 being a particularly profitable year. However, she was disheartened when goods were taken without payment, especially as the money was being raised for the cats.
When coming to view a cat Stephanie always gives people plenty of time to decide whether they would like to offer it a home. If they do decide this is not the cat for them, she asks them to please let her know as we often have other people waiting to view the cat and it could lose the opportunity of a new home if they do not do this. Similarly, when we have a space for a cat to come in and she calls to advise that we can now take their cat, could they please let her know if it has already been re-homed. Again, there will be other people on our waiting list who desperately need to get their cat into care. Politeness and good manners cost nothing.
Before our branch was set up both Stephanie and I volunteered for the Dereham Branch, initially at the home of Mrs Howard in Gressenhall, and then at the Adoption Centre in Longham. Mrs Howard was quite a character and many older people who have had cats from us over the years still remember her. One very good piece of advice she gave us was to never take in more cats than you can afford to look after properly and always have enough funds to pay for the unexpected bills that can occur. When our branch was set up, we were given a small amount of money, plus three cat pens, and were advised to start fund raising before the pens and cats arrived. The bases for the pens and cost of installing electricity had to be paid for by us so this was very sound advice and, having listened to Mrs Howard, we started fund raising straight away and have always had sufficient money to ensure the cats have all they need while in our care, We have continued to do so as the branch has grown and we have never had to worry where the money for the cat food and next veterinary bill would be coming from. We have also, as a result of money being left to the branch, been able to help cat owners on low income and people looking after feral colonies with neutering costs. By following Mrs Howard’s advice we know that our cats will always receive the very best care while with us.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. Contesting a Will
by Gerald Bloye, Chartered Legal Executive, Hayes + Storr
A family member, close friend, or loved one passes away and you find what you believe to be a clear error with their last Will in that it does not reflect the true intentions of the person making the Will.
what can you do about it? The starting point is that the law respects the wishes of the person who has died (“the testator”), even if the last Will did not accord with what family and friends were expecting. However if you suspect that the deceased’s real wishes have not been followed, or that the Will has not been made correctly, the Will may be invalid and you could mount a legal challenge.
the grounds for contesting a will include: • Lack of testamentary capacity: this means that the testator making the Will was not of sound mind when the Will was created and signed. The testator must understand the full content of their estate and understand who they are choosing to include and exclude.
• Forgery and fraud: a Will may be contested if there are valid grounds to suggest that it has been forged in some way.
• Undue influence or coercion: there may be a claim if the evidence suggests that the testator had been coerced by other persons into including in their Will provisions that they would not otherwise have included.
• Failure to duly execute the Will: the rules for executing a Will are strict. The testator must sign their Will in the presence of at least two witnesses who are present at the time of signing. The witnesses must confirm that they have seen the Will signed by the testator. If there is evidence to suggest otherwise then the Will may be rendered invalid due to lack of due execution.
• The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975: a claim can be made by a person such as a spouse, partner or child for whom adequate provision should have been made in the Will and was not.
Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.
Contesting a Will can be a complex process and expensive in terms of legal costs. It is important that you act as quickly as possible when deciding to contest a Will as stringent time limits may apply. In some cases, your solicitor may advise you to lodge a “caveat” which means that an official Grant of Probate cannot be issued and the estate, therefore, will not be distributed without your notification.
If you have reason to believe a Will is invalid and would like to obtain legal advice please contact Hayes + Storr on 01553 778900 or email law@hayes-storr.com.
This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice.
Nature’s Tantrum
Listen to the howling wind, Listen to the rain. Listen to arthritic trees Creak as if in pain. This is Nature’s tantrum, Which roils o’er vale and hill, With angry clouds so full of rain That rivers overspill. Floods wreak havoc everywhere, Ruining peoples’ lives. Where can wildlife hide from storms? How do birds survive? So much damage done to those Caught up in such a storm, All we can do is hope, once past, Calm weather will return. Frances Wraight

Stress free cats (and vets!)
Any one who has ever owned a cat will recognise how particular they can be with their likes and dislikes and the challenges this
often poses in caring for them.
Here at Toll Barn Vets we have always known how important specialised care is to all our patients including even the most mischievous of cats! We are extremely proud to have been awarded Gold Standard Feline Friendly Practice status for the 4th consecutive year by the International Society for Feline Medicine, a leading authority on feline care. We are delighted to be one of only 4 practices within the entire of Norfolk to achieve this award.
How does this help reduce stress for your cat? Being recognised as a Gold Standard Feline Friendly practice means we have been inspected and have demonstrated our high standard of care for cats. This includes having a separate waiting area complete with calming pheromone diffusers for worried cats with special areas to raise and cover cat baskets to help minimise stress. The hospital ward is a “cat only” area to prevent any stress caused by being able to see dogs and also has pheromone diffusers and large insulated kennels complete with hiding holes and varieties of food to keep cats comfortable during their stay. Our equipment and facilities for investigating disease and performing surgical procedures including techniques such as blood pressure monitoring, tonometry (measuring intraocular pressure), X-rays including dental x-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, CT scanner and in house laboratory have been rated at the highest level which means we can diagnose and treat cats quickly thus reducing the length of their stay with us.
Advocate and has some top tips for bringing your cat to the vets. Cats are independent and territorial animals. They dislike change and need to feel in control of their surroundings to feel secure. This can make a trip to the vets extremely stressful for the cat and it Cat Nema is important to make visits as stress free as possible. The first step is to make the carrier a positive experience. Encourage your cat to sleep and eat in or near it. Don’t just use it for vet visits as the carrier then becomes associated with a negative experience. Use bedding that smells of home and cover the carrier with a towel or blanket. Pheromone sprays can also be used to reduce stress. Once at the practice ensure the carrier is still covered and avoid placing it on the floor. Cat friendly practices should have raised stands designed for carriers. If the waiting room is busy or there is no separate cat waiting area it can be helpful to leave your cat in the car until the vet is ready to see you. It is important to give reassurance to your cat and take things slowly, a less stressful visit for your cat will also be a less stressful visit for yourself!
If you would like to book your free of charge healthcheck appointment or find out more about reducing the stress for your cat please give Toll Barn Vets a call on 01692 407126.

Karen Strandoo, Warm Homes Programme Manager at Broadland District Council, said “Since the funding has been available, we have had nearly 550 applicants for first time central heating and helped over 900 households across Norfolk keep warm and reduce their energy bills but we know there are many more people that still need this help. If you would like help to install first time central heating please contact us at www.norfolkwarmhomes.org.uk and find out if you could be next."

Meat Free Magic
There’s nothing like home cooking, and when you eat that way habitually, it’s very hard to then eat highly processed food. There’s a myth that cooking from scratch means hours in the kitchen, shopping every day for fresh food, and surely, we are all far too busy to do that? But it is a myth‌getting a good stock of easy recipes under your belt is what you should aim for, to enable you to be able to whip up nutritious, wholesome dishes without too much time or prep. This one is great, as it uses ingredients that you’re either likely to have around anyway, like onions, garlic, celery and leeks, plus good store cupboard staples such as stock cubes, tinned lentils, tomato puree and marmite. Mushrooms are highly nutritious and very cheap. And don’t underestimate good old Bisto gravy granules (there are some processed foods that are worth having on the shelf) ‌ there’s a reason they’ve been around as long as they have! I use the Favourite flavour in the red round container, as they are vegetarian friendly and have the nicest taste, easily adding a wonderful layer of flavour to many dishes. Miso is another product that I never allow myself to run out of‌it’s a fermented food that is great for your gut health, and an absolute hero of flavour, imparting a wonderful umami depth to stews, casseroles and soups. It is easily obtainable in all good health food shops. All in all, this is a definite winner of a recipe – high veg and protein, low cost and easy to make. Make ahead of time and pop in the oven when you get home from work for a delicious, ‘meaty’ and nutritious home cooked end to your day.
Scrumptious Shepherd’s Pie‌ Veggie Style
1 large white onion, chopped 1 large leek, chopped finely 2 fat cloves garlic, chopped finely 3 stalks celery, finely diced Olive oil 1 punnet chestnut mushrooms, whizzed up to crumbs in a food processor (or very finely chopped) 4 large flat mushrooms, cut into small chunks Vegetable stock cube Tblsp tomato puree 2 tsp dried thyme 1 rounded tsp miso paste, mixed with a little hot water 1 tsp marmite 1 tin brown or green lentils, drained Bisto gravy granules or cornflour White potatoes for mashing
Put your potatoes on to boil in a large pan of salted water. Very gently fry the onion, leek, garlic and celery in a good slug of olive oil, taking care not to let it burn. Add in the mushrooms, and stir
well, allowing the mushrooms to release their juices and then pop in the lentils. Add the thyme, marmite, tomato puree and stock cube, and add enough hot water to just cover the contents, stirring well. Allow to simmer for a few minutes, and then stir in your miso paste. Thicken with a little Bisto gravy granules or a little corn flour, until you have a good thick gravy. Turn into a deep oven proof dish. When potatoes are soft, drain well and mash with a good dollop of butter, salt and pepper and a little milk. Spoon the mash onto the top of the lentil mixture, taking care to
cover it completely and seal the edges. Rough up the top with a fork and add a little more seasoning. Place in a preheated oven on 180° for approximately 30 – 40 minutes, until the top is golden, and the dish is piping hot all the way through. Serve with a generous portion of Carolyn Burn green vegetables.

A guide to minimally invasive facial cosmetic procedures Turn back time and see visible results. The time machine procedures.
Non surgical procedures provide impressive, natural looking results and have a beneficial effect on skin health. However if you’re already at a stage where the effects of ageing, sun-exposure or smoking has taken a toll then your only option may be to go under the knife. We offer gentle minimally invasive surgical procedure.
laser facelift. This is a procedure to provide a tighter jawline and upper neck. A laser fibre is used to heat the under-layers of the skin and shrink the soft tissue allowing the skin to gently firm and lift up.
Laser liposuction is the best option to get rid of double chin and excess fat in areas of chin, cheeks, neck and jowls. Again there is no knife involved and it is a minimally invasive procedure.
Minimally invasive facial cosmetic surgery may involve small incision mini brow lift, laser blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery. A lip lift is a small $@''()$''& J4O&IE 8; F$ @>S 7L<1BL&>$$#F <!<@I LFJ $ LF$SI- $ O 15 :6$S "D.N%=S QSA GG.?= S ?99.HH%"SH?S CM 2.HQS

procedure that provides profound results or indeed a mini facelift carried out under local anaesthesia to remove excess facial and neck skin and tighten the underlying muscle layer to provide long lasting results.
Mini-brow lift. Two incisions on either side of forehead just inside the hair line lift the outer brows. This is an area that often sags with ageing and facial volume loss. A mini brow lift avoids a long scar. Often the hair growth will make the scar barely perceptible.
blepharoplasty. This involves removal of excess upper eyelid skin to allow youthful look to the eyes. We use a precise laser beam to remove the skin minimising bleeding or bruising.
lip lift. The upper lip lengthens and lips shrink due to loss of volume. If you do lip fillers they often provide an unnatural look. A better solution is to reduce the lip length allowing more of the red lip to show. We often combine this procedure with CO2 laser resurfacing to renew skin around the mouth.
one stitch facelift. It is a brief procedure. One small incision on either side of the face is used. The incision is hidden in the hair and lifts the jaw line.
neck lift. Here a tiny incision is made in the chin crease and underlying neck muscles are tightened. This can also be combined with neck liposuction or mini-facelift surgery.
Fat transfer. Also known as 3D facelift is gentle fat removal from body. The fat cells are then injected into the face. It provides a natural looking facelift and improves skin quality.
ear lobe surgery. This is carried out to repair torn or stretched earlobes and also to reduce enlarged or elongated earlobes to provide natural contours.
Of course we also offer minor surgical procedures such as removal of moles, cysts, lipomas etc. Call us on 01603 736487 or log on the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

Sheringham Horticultural Society AGM
The Gallant Gardener
At this time of the year, rhubarb is beginning to come into season, whether it is from the forcing houses of the growing triangle in Yorkshire or your garden. This vegetable has become much more popular and is very versatile. It originates from China and was named as it grew on the banks of the Volga River in Russia.
Sheringham Horticultural Society is a local organization that meets at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Sheringham.
We have been in operation for nearly 100 years. We are keen horticulturalists and crafters and have a range of speakers and events throughout the year. We also manage our own allotments at Beeston Regis.
Stomach, liver and lung disorders, venereal disease and snake bites have all been treated with rhubarb, whose earliest recorded use, as powdered roots, date back to 2,700 BC. Despite its purgative, detoxifying qualities, rhubarb hasn’t always been eaten with such relish as it is today.
If you would like to come along to our Annual General Meeting, this is being held at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham at 7pm Thursday 19 March 2020 with a fish and chip social afterwards (booking essential).
If you would like to know more or would like to join us, please ring Chris Wright Secretary on 01263 821754 for more information.
Rhubarb seeds first arrived in Europe in the 16th Century, when it had medicinal, rather than culinary value, a situation that lasted until the 18th Century, when its use as drug declined.

Eating the stalks probably arose as a way of utilizing rhubarb’s curative properties. Rhubarb from the garden in general, should not be eaten from July as the oxalic acid comes down into the stalks.

Surprisingly low in calories but high in calcium, potassium and healthy promoting fibre, rhubarb has recently been found to lower blood cholesterol. Rhubarb can be grown in containers or the garden and apart from a top dressing of good manure or general fertilizer it needs very little attention. After about five years it will need digging up, splitting and putting in a fresh position where it will get warmth and rain.

3/4lb trimmed rhubarb, 4 individual sponge cakes, 2 oz castor sugar, 2 tablespoons water, 1 large orange rind and juice, small pinch of cinnamon. Meringue topping2 egg whites, 4oz castor sugar.

Slice the sponge cakes through the middle and cut the rhubarb into thin slices. Into a 2 pint ovenproof pie dish put a layer of sponge cake, half the rhubarb, sprinkle with half the sugar, cinnamon and rind and juice of the orange. Continue with another layer in the same way and finally add the water. Cover and cook at approx. 190C or gas mark 5 for 35 to 45 minutes until the rhubarb is tender. Whip egg whites stiffly, gradually add the sugar and fold in. Pile on top and bake a further 10-12 mins at the same temperature

Speed of sound after speed of light. Bouquets, spheres and twisted formulations. Igniting, exploding, dissipating.
Fiery affirmation of timelessness, a passing second Never grasped, experienced through a sliding moment. And the sky is owned for a few minutes In dazzling hues of dangerous fire-powered ecstasy.
Exploding shapes of colour. Multi-pastelled showers of brief exaltation. So here and now, Then gone forever. Celebratory launches of lightning energy.

Qualifications A to T: North Norfolk’s local businesses invited to learn The first T Level courses will begin in more about Apprenticeships and T Levels September 2020, and are available in the
North Norfolk District Council will hold a free T Level seminar ahead of the introduction of the new technical qualifications.
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is organising a free information event specifically for local businesses to introduce them to the new T Level technical qualification. There will also be information about the latest developments in apprenticeships, including funding.
The event is intended to help local businesses learn how they can benefit from industry placements and the range of support available to help recruit, train and upskill their workforce. It will host key speakers from local training providers, including Laura McLean, the T Level Coordinator at Norwich City College and Alison Ward, the newly appointed
New Anglia LEP Apprenticeship Levy Coordinator. There will be time for networking with local training providers including UTCN, the College of West Anglia, Nova Training and Poultec, with the opportunity to meet an advisor from the New Anglia Growth Hub to learn about funding to develop business.
T Levels are a new qualification designed to progress from GCSEs and will be equivalent to 3 A levels. The two-year courses have been developed with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work. Students will be involved in a mixture of classroom learning and over 300 hours of ‘on-the-job’ experience in order to acquire the skills necessary for them to enter their chosen field of industry.
following fields: • digital production, design and development • design, surveying and planning • education
Cllr. Richard Kershaw, Portfolio holder for Economic Development and Employment said “The new T level qualification is designed to provide technical educational training relevant to the needs of business and industry. I believe this gives students a very sound platform to approach the world of work and will benefit businesses and students alike. I urge businesses to attend to find out more.”
The ‘Qualifications A to T’ workshop is on 1 April between 4pm and 6pm. You can register or ask for more information by contacting economic.growth@north-norfolk.gov.uk
Council proposes more efficient alternative to plans for offshore National Grid through one single cable wind connections in to National Grid
North Norfolk District Council is seeking to defend residents’ concerns over intrusive infrastructure works and their impact on the local environment associated with connecting offshore wind generated electricity in to the National Grid North Norfolk District Council, working in partnership with East Suffolk Council, have taken the initiative to express concerns about the impact of proposed onshore National Grid cable connections and wider implications for the District in a letter addressed to the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Under proposed plans, the North Norfolk and East Suffolk local authority areas will see approximately 40% of the UK’s offshore wind generation pass through their districts, having achieved landfall in their districts and then connecting with National Grid infrastructure via onshore cable connections.
North Norfolk District Council has positively embraced offshore wind developments in the North Sea, welcoming the move towards increasing generating capacity in renewable energy and recognising the vital national importance of moving towards a zero-carbon economy by 2050 - having been the first council in Norfolk to declare a Climate Emergency, coupled with the positive
implementation of a Green Agenda, environmental plans and renewable energy alternatives being at the forefront of future plans for north Norfolk.
However, the Council shares the concerns of local residents, tourism and agricultural businesses that the number of cable corridors and grid related infrastructures now being proposed by offshore wind developments would cause intrusive and avoidable impacts on the District. The letter, penned to the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Energy, proposes that the Government explore the development of an Offshore Ring Main, to minimise the construction impacts on the coastal region in the short term and to rationalise grid connections for greater efficiency in the long term. An Offshore Ring Main would connect to the
connection, potentially saving the North Norfolk countryside from widespread infrastructure works delivered over many years.
Leader of the Council, Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer said “We are the guardians of this beautiful area, and we have an important role to play in balancing the needs of addressing the immediate climate threat, with protecting the North Norfolk countryside and community. We need to find smarter ways of working together for the benefit of all’’

Sheringham Football Club v Diss Town 22/02/20 Intense winds bombarded the ground As we took on Diss Town, And as the game progressed, its strength Refused to calm right down! The first half saw a lot of balls Zoom high above the stand; The weather playing quite a part: Giving a helping hand!
The best chance of the half fell to The Shannocks goal machine, Who headed way over the bar Leaving him on: nineteen!
The visitor's best effort flew Upwards towards the Splash, And could have given - on the slide A swimmer quite a bash! But come the hour, come the man This time from a free-kick; That beat the wall, keeper and all And knocked out their first brick.
It swung into the bottom-right To give Shannocks the lead, Their defence broken down at last Through Cary's scoring greed! The Reds defended well all game, Young Smith: man of the match, Got stuck in and battled hard... And then the 'great dispatch!'
W
Deep on the left flank Boycey struck, Top corner was the aim; The ball smashed into Diss' net When pinging off the frame.
A truly world class goal from Boyce Marlene will be so proud! On eighty-three it caused ear popping From the noisy crowd!
From this hard-fought Diss-mantling spree (Which overall was fair), Another big match - in Suffolk For, we shall now prepare.

Update on the Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre
The Splash swimming pool in Sheringham will remain closed in the coming weeks as repair work is undertaken to damage caused by high winds.
Following a survey of the building, remedial work will also be carried out to ensure users can continue to enjoy Splash until Sheringham’s new pool opens in 2021.
Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We apologise for the inconvenience this prolonged closure may cause to families and regular users of the swimming pool but our priority has to be the safety of the public and our staff. This is a building which is coming to the end of its life and is displaying many of the problems associated with ageing infrastructure. Whilst we want to keep it open as we build the new leisure centre, we must ensure it is safe and able to withstand all weathers including high winds.
Woodlands Indoor Bowls Club
Cllr Bütikofer continued “We are still at the stage of commissioning the work and so, as yet, we do not know exactly how long it will take. Clearly we are keen to ensure the closure is kept to a minimum.”
