Notice from the Editor - Coronavirus and Magazine Deliveries

While we are continuing to deliver through letterboxes for the moment, it is possible that we will be advised not to do so in the future if we are advised that this will be detrimental to the well-being of our team of distributors or the households we deliver to. If such is the case we will make alternative arrangements at pick-up points as are available at the time. For those with good internet access, the magazines will be on line as usual at www.rosevillapublications.co.uk. As everyone is aware, at risk people (over 70s and those with underlying conditions) have been advised to minimize contact. To help reduce the possibility of contamination and to discourage people from making extra contact, the drop point for leaving free ads or letters or articles for the magazines will no longer be used until the crisis passes. A large number of events have been cancelled or postponed in our area already and we will continue to put updates into the magazines as best

we can. Hopefully when the worst is over, we will be able to let you know revised dates for those that can be rescheduled. Pavilion Theatre shows postponed

North Norfolk District Council can confirm shows due to take place at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier have been postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Working closely with Openwide Coastal Ltd, the external contractors who manage the theatre, the decision to has been taken in the interest of public health not to hold any of the scheduled shows or events at the Pavilion Theatre until 20th June 2020. This decision is taken in the light of the latest advice from Government on managing large gatherings, as the nation works to combat the spread of the virus. The Council will continue to work closely with the operator of the popular venue to secure its sustainability beyond this crisis. We will continue to monitor Government advice and remain in constant dialogue with Openwide about the theatre. Openwide Coastal Ltd. Has put out the following message to its loyal customers: “As of 2pm today Openwide Coastal Ltd. have taken the decision to reschedule all planned performances up to and including Friday 19th June. In addition the Vintage Sixties Festival, Folk on the Pier and Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society will be postponed until 2021. We will begin the process of contacting all affected customers starting from 9am on the 19th March. This will take some time to work through, so please be patient with us and our team whilst we work to contact everybody. In the meantime thank you from us all for your continued support and understanding. I hope that we will see you all again soon, in the meantime we hope that you and your families stay safe and stay positive.”

Dear Margaret,

I have been a resident of Beeston Regis for nearly 30 years and have been a regular dog walker on the common during this time enjoying nature at its best.

Unfortunately my mobility at my grand age of over 90 has become a problem in the last year. My dog is still walked by friends who give me regular feedback and photos of what’s happening there.

Reading my garden magazine this month reminds me of what we already know, the more trees, shrubs and plants we add to our landscape the more carbon we trap thus helping our poor little world survive. So bearing that in mind, I have to ask with many others, why is our common cut back so drastically and especially at nesting time?

It’s upsetting to think that the wildlife and wild plants are regularly losing their natural habitat. At one time walking along the paths the ground nesters could be heard chuckling away, deers rustling in the bushes, rabbits hopping around and snakes basking in the warm sun, but for several months it becomes a bare wilderness with many meeting their fate due to man’s interference. I appreciate and understand that some maintenance has to happen but to what cost?

Jim Farrell, the Society’s Secretary, presented a display entitled ‘Pages from my Albums’ at the March meeting on 9 March.

He explained how he goes about collecting stamps by likening himself to a magpie! If he comes across a stamp that particularly appeals to him, he will often branch out from what he is currently collecting and start a new collection! In this way, he had started to gather King George VI stamps, which he had brought to show us this evening.

During this era, GB stamps were designed for use in GB and the same design was issued for all the British colonies, the only difference being in the colony’s name on the stamp. These are known as omnibus issues and were used to celebrate occasions such as Victory (1946), Royal Silver Wedding (1948) and the Universal Postal Union.

Gradually, the colonies (and then as independent countries) began to produce their own designs of stamp and Jim had examples from Pitcairn Islands and St.Helena.

The second part of Jim’s display focussed on European countries including Finland and France in the 1930s and 1940s, with a particular interest in charity stamps, which many European countries produce as a means of raising funds for worthwhile causes for example The Red Cross.

On Tuesday 3 March, after a tasty lunch, the award-winning author Phyllida Scrivens told the true story of a Jewish boy who escaped from Nazi Germany and went on to become the Sheriff of Norwich. His name was Joe Stirling, who sadly passed away in February. Phyllida has written a book about Joe called ‘Escaping Hitler’ (Pen and Sword Books, 2016).

Joe started life in 1924 as Gunter Stern, born in a rural village near Koblenz. Having witnessed his father’s arrest during Kristallnacht in November 1938, Gunter realised that the Nazi regime represented a threat to his future. After an abortive escape attempt, which involved walking for seven days across Northern Europe, he subsequently arrived in England via the Kindertransport programme. Tragically, he never saw his parents again. Alfred and Ida Stern did not survive the war; they perished in the Sobibor death camp in Poland.

Gunter was such a good student that he was offered a place at Birmingham University to read Chemistry. He rejected the offer and instead volunteered to join the British Army. An injury led to Joe Stirling, as he was now called, spending the war in Basingstoke, where he met Jean Skitmore, his future wife, whose family came from Attleborough. After the war, they moved to Norfolk, where he got a job as Agent for the Labour Party in Norwich.

Joe became a family man and a successful businessman, running a travel company called Stirling Holidays. He also joined Lions International and raised lots of money for charities. Owing to his charity work, he became Sheriff of Norwich in 1975.

Tonka beans, harvested ecologically from deep within the Amazon, are a hugely sought-after delicacy throughout the world for their unique, intense flavour. However they also contain a fair amount of coumarin, a toxin that can actually kill you if eaten in quantity. “As long as you don’t use a copious amount of it – obviously a copious amount could cause death – it really is delicious,” says Thomas Raquel, head pastry chef at the Michelin-starred Le Bernardin in New York. In fact it’s banned in the US, so M. Raquel must have a reliable ‘source’ from South America that we’ll say no more about…

- What steps can we take to safeguard our loved ones?

What can we do to help a family member or close friend following a diagnosis of dementia? It is important to remember that if an individual loses, or starts to lose mental capacity a spouse, next of kin, or family member is not automatically appointed to legally deal with their affairs.

Sustainable Saturday Local Marine Conservation

Continuing with its programme of lectures and discussions around the theme of sustainability, Sustainable Saturday met last month at the Friends Meeting House, Sheringham and heard from Marine Conservation Society representative, Hilary Cox, and retired local crab fisherman, Jim Lingwood. Speaking on the theme of Local Marine Conservation, Jim opened the meeting with a reminder that sustainability is “the quality of being able to continue something over a period of time.” Jim’s retirement leaves just four single-handed crab boats fishing from Sheringham - a huge drop from the heyday when up to 100 boats launched from Sheringham and West Runton beaches. Jim’s chief regret is that local fishing is no longer a simple craft, conducted with personal responsibility and passed on from generation to generation. Increased government intervention has led to remotely-made decisions about local livelihoods and oppressive bureaucracy that, in his opinion, create more problems than they solve.

Speaking for the other side of the argument, on behalf of the Marine Conservation Society, Hilary Cox began by outlining the background to the Marine Conservation Zone and emphasised the importance of planning to support sustainability for decades to come as well as for the near future. Norfolk fishermen, with knowledge handed through generations, intuitively knew of the importance of the Chalk Shoal. In the 1970s they requested and obtained a byelaw that would prohibit trawling out to 3 nautical miles between Blakeney and Mundesley. It wasn’t until 2014 that divers discovered and brought official recognition to the marvel that is Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds, making conservation essential. Hilary’s main point was that there is a need to organise and regulate both the habitat and the activities - especially fishing - that occur within it. This has necessarily involved administrative organisation, with its inherent bureaucracy, and much of her work liaising with the IFCA is to protect and sustain this unique MCZ; the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds are the biggest and

‘Topping-out’ the new Therapeutic Centre at Sheringham Woodfields School

On Friday 13 March I went to a bowling match and came home with little Chris! He was found out during the day at Stalham. At only 250grms he must have been struggling for a long time seeking food just to keep himself alive. Since getting warm he is eating well so hopefully it will not be many weeks before he gets up to weight and can be released back into the wild. Please note that the fundraising Bingo due to take place on 4 April has been postponed until later in the year.

Despite challenges posed by winter weather, construction of the new Therapeutic Centre at Sheringham Woodfields School is on time and on budget, and on 11 March the ‘topping-out' ceremony took place. Members of Norfolk County Council joined staff and pupils as builders Draper and Nichols completed the final section of the building's roof.

When completed and handed over in late Summer term 2020, the centre will increase the children's access to important physical therapies, and the incorporated increased group work space will create twenty-four extra school places. Ten of the children filling these places have already arrived, as have eight new members of staff. Work has been undertaken within the existing school buildings to create new classroom accommodation for them.

Jim and Hilary are now working together to educate and inform local schools and communities about the unique heritage of the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds, MCZs in general and the challenges and opportunities that cooperation in conservation provides, as well as the unique privilege it is to be a local fisherman. Evolving from the Sustainable Saturday talks, a working group to be known as ‘Sustainable Sheringham’ is to be set up at a meeting to be held on Wednesday, 8 April from 7pm, at the Friends Meeting House, Cremer Street, Sheringham. Winter Notes from the Commons The winter period (Dec/Jan/Feb) has been characterized by storm force winds and rain and some quite warm days. There have been very few frosts and only one day (Feb 10) where snow fell and laid for a short while. Throughout this time Mark Clements and I have continued to monitor the wildlife and the following are the highlights. Sightings are posted daily on the website www.beestoncommon.org.uk if you wish to see more details. During December there was an Barn Owl absence of finches such as Siskin and Redpoll with numbers way down on the previous year. A total of eight Goldcrests were spotted by Mark (Dec 01) and a wintering Chiffchaff was present (Dec 04). The Chiffchaff was still around the following day (Dec 05) and Mark also saw two Fieldfares fly west over the Common. Mark and I were also lucky enough to see three Red Kites pass singularly (Dec 08) in a southwest direction. The southwest heading seems to be a standard flyway for raptors across the Common as most birds are noted passing in that direction. Mark recorded the Chiffchaff and 16 Goldcrests (Dec 13) as well as a Redwing and Marsh Tit. A Snipe was seen overflying (Dec 15), a rare site this winter, however, Mark had a brief but great view of a Short-eared Owl as it crossed the main road to the Top Common (Dec 22). The largest party of Lesser Redpoll, consisting of 12, was reported by Mark (Dec 27). Again both of us were lucky to see a Peregrine heading south over the Central Mire (Dec 29), also nine Lapwing were seen heading southwest and a Mediterranean Gull was observed overflying. January started rather quiet and dull with little of note, however a flock of 12 Redwings were feeding in the Gorse Shieldbugs southern woodland area (Jan 05) and five Siskins were observed by Mark in the Alder trees. Not strictly on the Commons but Mark observed (Jan 06), in an adjoining field next to the southeast corner a flock of 17 Stock Doves, which must be the largest gathering for many years in this area. Also a Mediterranean Gull was seen with Black-headed Gulls near the main pond. Snowdrops were out in flower (Jan 08) including the more robust species, Pleated Snowdrop. These plants have obviously originated from the gardens of the nearby houses. Next day (Jan 09) a flock of

Pink-footed Geese estimated at 250 discovered in London in 2002 and subsequently strong flew over east. A very warm day spread out around the country. It was first recorded (Jan 10) saw Mark looking at four Siskins and three in Norfolk at Thetford in 2011. In February, I started my regular surgeries for residents across the constituency. I’m delighted already to have helped so many people with concerns and issues – please do contact me if you would like to see me at a future surgery.

In Parliament, I’ve been proud to speak up for our farmers, who are so important to our area, providing not only our food but much employment.

I have continued to work on my project to improve ambulance response times by urging

the government to look at the Norwich & Norwich A&E unit. It suffers hugely with capacity issues, so we are working on a solution which will benefit everyone and get our ambulances back into North Norfolk faster.

In conjunction with multiple partners, I’m in discussions to improve and bring extra facilities to Cromer Hospital. Although at an early stage, this would be a fantastic step forward, if we can treat more people locally and save more residents from having to make the long journey to Norwich.

Council ends wind turbines legal battle

NNDC disappointed over Bodham and Selbrigg decision North Norfolk District Council will no longer continue its legal battle against plans to build two separate wind turbines at Bodham and Selbrigg. Despite strong objections from the Council and local residents, who argued against the turbines on grounds of the harm to landscape, heritage assets and wildlife would not be outweighed by the comparatively limited renewable energy benefits, the Planning Inspectorate has upheld its original decision to allow both turbines.

We are aware that the current world health situation is quite rightly causing a significant concern amongst our clients both in terms of their and their pet’s safety. These unprecedented times call for us all to work together for the good of our families, pets and communities. To this end we would like to reassure all our clients that we have already implemented contingency plans to help us to keep our patients, staff, clients and community safe and to help us ensure pets receive medication and care to the highest standard despite these challenges.

These plans include waiting in the car for your appointment, a maximum of one person per pet entering the consultation room and use of hand sanitisers and gloves. Our plans also include use of telephone and video consultation where appropriate, medication postage and doorstep collection of medication. We also have plans in place for the veterinary care of patients whose owners are self-isolating.

All these plans are already in place and are working well. Our staff have been split into groups who will not contact each other as we hope this will enable us to continue to offer our services, including our 24/7 emergency service, to our patients whilst minimising the risk to our staff and clients throughout this challenging period. We would urge all our clients to stay calm and heed government advice whilst also being reassured that we have contingency plans in place to care for your pets whilst keeping you and our staff as safe as possible despite the current challenges.
