Sheringham Lifeboat Day Another Successful Lifeboat Day

As I stand here on Beeston Bump marvelling at the Red Arrows display over the North Sea as part of Cromer Carnival Day, it reminds me of the amazing simulated air and sea rescue operations undertaken by RNLI and the Coastguard on Sunday 14 August for the Sheringham Lifeboat day.

The day commenced with activities in the Boathouse with volunteers manning several stalls, running tombola and serving refreshments. There were activities for children, and the lifeboat crew, led by Senior Helmsman David Hagan, were on hand to talk about their role and show people the boat and RNLI equipment. As the day progressed, it became clear that this would become a record breaking day for the number of attendees’ thanks, among other things, to the super weather.

A display by the Coastguard involved being lowered down the cliff to simulate a rescue and how the Coastguard and RNLI work closely together. Continued on page 4...

Sheringham Lifeboat Day

Continued from front cover... Then the Sheringham lifeboat, ‘The Oddfellows’, an Atlantic 85, launched and was involved in exercises and a rendezvous with the Coastguard helicopter based at Humberside Airport, during which the air to boat and boat to air winching operation was demonstrated, a winch man lowered to the boat and then retrieved whilst both the Coastguard helicopter and Sheringham Lifeboat were at speed across the water.

The Cromer lifeboats, the Tamar class offshore boat and the D class ILB, both interacted with the Sheringham lifeboat, demonstrating how the RNLI fleet works in concert to provide complimentary services to offer assistance to save lives at sea.

Two of the Sheringham lifeboat crew then volunteered to swim out and be rescued by the RNLI beach lifeguards, which demonstrates another element of how the RNLI looks to protect and save those in danger of drowning

Other activities that went to make this a special day for the Sheringham Lifeboat Day were the RNLI Face to Face (F2F,) who are an in-house team dedicated to saving lives by raising funds, inspiring support and sharing safety tips with the public. There was a magnificent model boat display in the boating pond on the

esplanade and of course, no lifeboat day would be complete without a number of nautical songs from the Sheringham Shantymen, who performed to a large crowd on the launch area beyond the boathouse. how to enjoy the environment more safely.

The annual lifeboat service, involving ministers and clergy from the Sheringham Churches, was led this year by Major Janet Bishop of the Salvation Army, assisted by Major Alex Bishop, Rev Ian Savoury, Father Denys Lloyd, Julie Rubidge, Trevor Halsey and Mick Holford.

Janet welcomed members of the public to the service and Sheringham RNLI chairman, Phil Hawes, shared with the congregation the RNLI's mission to reduce by half the number of deaths by drowning and why it was vital that both those who lived by water and those who were visitors became better educated about

Following the service, the Chairman then attended the annual RNLI Carnser service held at Blakeney Quay where he was able to deliver the same message and pledge the continued dedication of RNLI volunteers to save lives. Phil was due to be joined at Blakeney by the Sheringham Lifeboat but there proved to be insufficient depth of water in the Channel to get the boat all the way to the quay, either that or the crew are a little overweight!

Thanks go to all those who so generously supported the day, the RNLI volunteers, the 32 local businesses who kindly donated gifts for the tombola and the work of the crew at Sheringham Station and the RNLI in general, who remember that it was 75 years ago in 1941 that Henry Blogg helped to save 88 men, earning him his third gold medal for bravery. There have only been 150 gold medals awarded throughout RNLI history.

Norman Lamb Calls for North Norfolk District Council to Adopt '2 Minute Beach Clean' Initiative

Norman Lamb and Liberal Democrat District Councillor Sarah Butikofer recently visited the Seaview Beach Cafe at West Runton to find out more about the '#2 Minute Beach Clean' initiative being run there.

Cafe owner, Louise O'Shea, has introduced a board outside her cafe inviting people to take a litter picker and plastic bag in order to collect rubbish off the beach. The rubbish is then put into the bin outside her cafe. The boards are provided by the not-for-profit organisation The Beach Clean Network, and typically businesses pay about £300 to have one.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said ‘Every day holidaymakers take these litterpickers and collect litter off the beach. The result is that this beach in West Runton is kept in immaculate condition and it is an army of volunteers who end up doing this throughout the year. When we visited there was no rubbish visible at all! It is a brilliant initiative.

Our suggestion, after talking to Louise, is that NNDC should try to

set up this sort of scheme for every major beach in North Norfolk, encouraging volunteers to come forward and getting companies to sponsor it. This could be an amazing community initiative and would inevitably be very successful in keeping beaches clean. I have written to Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of the District Council, to put this idea forward. Louise has started something fantastic here and it would make a lot of sense for the Council to look at how they can spread this approach across North Norfolk’.

Sarah Butikofer, District Councillor for The Runtons Ward, said ‘I'm delighted with this initiative by Louise. The beach at West Runton is now spotless and she deserves real credit for this. I would strongly encourage NNDC to think about rolling something like this out along all of the North Norfolk coastal resorts’.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.

As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.

When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.

I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Register in advance to speak The way members of the public book their chance to speak about specific planning applications at North Norfolk District Council's Development Committee meetings is about to change. At the moment people must arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the meeting and request to speak either for or against an application. This is to allow time for the Chairman to rearrange the order of items on the agenda to prevent people having to wait for a long time. For 'minor' applications, one objector and one supporter is allowed to speak on each application for up to three minutes. If several people have attended to speak on a single application either in support or in objection, they must agree among themselves who will fill the speaking roles. For ‘major’ applications, or those in which the Council has legal interest or is the landowner, up to four objectors will be allowed to speak for up to three minutes each. Up to four supporters will be allowed to speak for an equivalent time in total to that al-

lowed for the objectors. From 22 September those wishing to speak will need to register by 9am on the Tuesday before the Thursday meeting (or 48 hours in advance if the day of the meeting is switched from the usual Thursday). This will allow the list of speakers to be assembled, the agenda ordered in advance and this information circulated to key officers prior to the meeting. Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning and Planning Policy, said "The change will assist with the smooth running of the committee. "It will avoid potential confusion at the start of the meeting as customer service staff try to ensure the names of speakers are logged against the various items and the agenda re-ordered to reflect the public interest." The new procedure came into force from 1 September ready for Development Committee on 22 September and information about the new registration process is online. The number of people allowed to speak and the

Come and join the chorus

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society (SCCS) invite you to join them at the start of their 2016-17 season for an open rehearsal on Monday 12 September at 7pm in Sheringham High School.

They will be preparing for their November concert In Every Corner Sing with music by Vaughan Williams, Parry and Stanford with their new music director, David Ballard accompanied by Anthony Gowing.

This will be a great opportunity to try out the idea of choral singing with this well-established highly regarded 100 strong choir. Whether you are already an accomplished singer or just finding your way around a music stave choral singing is a highly enjoyable pastime and you will quickly feel at home in this friendly group. All voice parts most welcome.

There will be another opportunity for everyone to enjoy a whole day of choral singing on Saturday 15 October in the Lighthouse Sheringham when SCCS invite you to Come & Sing Haydn’s Nelson Mass. The workshop, which will run from 10am to 4pm approximately, is presented as part of COAST Arts Festival and is FREE, thanks to the support of Norwich & Peterborough Building Society, John Jarrold Trust and Norfolk County Council. The choice of music fits the theme of this year’s COAST Arts Festival, which is Revolution. The Nelson Mass is also called Missa in Augustis – Mass in times of trouble. At the end of the day, there will be a performance in St Peter’s Parish Church, Sheringham at 5pm to show what has been achieved to friends and family. St Peter’s posh refreshments will be available before and after the informal concert.

Age Concern North Norfolk is getting into the ’40s swing during the annual weekend celebrations in Sheringham

They are hosting a fashion show, with the best-dressed traditions of the ’40s styles, at their Day Centre on Cremer Street. Come and enjoy the fashion of the ’40s and a cream tea, for just £6 per person, in true ’40s style.

The event is free to enter and is kindly supported by Sheringham Community Wardrobe and all proceeds go towards the many wonderful schemes run by the local charity including their befriending scheme, day services and Keep-InTouch Clubs. The fashion show is on Saturday 17 September and starts at 10am. For more information, or to book your afternoon tea, please call Dale on 01263 821188.

The week after Age Concern North Norfolk is hoping to raise some much needed money by putting on a variety show. The show is organised in conjunction with the Good Intentions Fundraising Team (G.I.F.T) and has been running for many years. The show is held at Aldborough Community Centre and tickets costs just £5 and this includes a cup of tea or coffee. There will also be a raffle and light refreshments to purchase.

Tickets can be purchased, or reserved, from Age Concern North Norfolk on 01263 821188 or by calling Yvonne Tiffany on 01263 768076.

Sheringham Independent 447

Artists appearing include Pat Nearney aka The Norfolk Nut, Doreen Reed, Mel Brown, Pete Philips, The Volko Trio, a local family of performers from Holt and winners of the G.I.F.T Talent Show in March plus many more. The idea for the Variety Show came about when G.I.F.T founder and organiser, Yvonne Tiffany, wanted to commemorate her late father, who was a professional organist/ pianist, and who accompanied many artists many of which went on to become household names. The show starts at 2.30pm and is expected to finish around 5pm.

Forbidden Fruit

By Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

You may have seen headlines in the press in August: “Apple tells mourning father to get court order to access late son’s music, photos and ‘memories’”.

The case relates to young man of 20, Morgan Hehir, who was murdered in an unprovoked attack, while out on a Hallowe’en night last year.

Apple said that, due to strict privacy laws, it could not hand over the data to the Hehir family without legal authority. Apple argued, perhaps not unfairly, that some Apple customers may not want their private data transferred to other people, even upon their death; and that therefore Apple could not override password protected data. Apple said that it was not for them to make the decision.

A Grant of Probate of a Will (or Grant of Letters of Administration, where there is no Will) is a Court Order, but that wasn’t specific enough for Apple.

Morgan’s father, Colin was told it wasn’t a legal matter and the Information Commissioner said it wasn’t a data protection issue. Colin pointed out that Morgan owned the computer and the data and that Apple owned only the access.

It is a fair argument that not necessarily

everyone would want their executors and/or family to have access to all their private data in the event of their death. Some things are best kept secret and taken to the grave!

On the basis that ‘prevention is better than cure’, what steps should be taken to prevent such a situation arising?

First, the obvious answer; which is to keep the relevant passwords, not just for Apple, but for all online matters such as bank accounts, utilities etc somewhere able to be accessed upon death or incapacity. Several of my clients have already done so using the old-fashioned method of a hard copy letter stored in our strongroom along with their Wills, Deeds and Powers of Attorney.

Secondly, another option, which I am yet to put into being, is a specific statement in the Will and/or Lasting Power of Attorney authorising the release to the executor/ attorney of all encrypted data and ordering all providers to grant their executors full access to it.

Best practice would be to do both.

It is doubtful that Morgan, age 20, who died so tragically and suddenly, and who worked as a hospital clerk, but

moonlighted as a graffiti artist and musician, was someone who would have made a Will. Apple’s attitude is, however, food for thought for the rest of us.

The Managing Director of a North Norfolk Nissan dealership is preparing for a 'Money-can’t-buy' VIP trip to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games after overseeing a massive fundraising effort to supercharge ParalympicsGB’s athletes.

Kevin Abbs, MD at Crayford and Abbs Nissan led months of fundraising activities raising more than £12,000 to help the nation’s Paralympic heroes to medal glory at the Games.

And in recognition, Nissan - the official automotive partner of Team GB and ParalympicsGB - is sending him on an all-expenses paid trip to Rio for an experience he’ll never forget.

A delighted Kevin said “It’s amazing. We went to the effort of fundraising because it was such a good cause but I never thought in a million years I’d end up in Rio cheering our athletes on. We couldn’t have raised this incredible amount without the tireless work of everyone at the dealership and the large number of organisations and customers who have supported us over the year.”

Kevin, who will be taking his friend Clive Hedges on the journey to Rio de Janiero, added, “I cannot wait to witness the carnival atmosphere in Brazil during the Games and am already looking forward to seeing our athletes try and bring home the Gold – especially Jessica – Jane Applegate.”

Non-surgical body contouring

Do we have an alternative to liposuction?

Liposuction remains the top cosmetic surgical procedure worldwide. There is however, a strong demand for non-invasive procedures that can address localised pockets of fat. OK. I am going to give you my conclusion right at the start. Unfortunately none of the heavily marketed devices have lived up to the hype so far. They certainly have a place in a cosmetic clinic but it is limited!

Here I provide information on two of the most known devices. Zerona™ is one of the several low level laser devices marketed as laser lipo. The theory is that low-level laser therapy opens pores in fat cells and they leak fat, which is then cleared by the body’s metabolic processes. These are marketed as laser lipo but are not as effective as true laser liposuction. One well known UK manufacturer of a similar device recently went bust! Zeltiq™ device selectively freeze fat cells in a controlled manner and cause fat cell death. So we know that fat cells are actually destroyed by this method. A treatment session takes an hour or more. This combination of low temperature and treatment time is such that it damages fat cells but not the overlying skin, as fat cells are more susceptible to cold. Again multiple sessions may be required with this device. Other non-invasive options for fat removal are radiofrequency and low frequency ultrasound machines and focused ultrasound devices. My treatment of choice for fat reduction remains laser liposuction and here are my reasons: 1. It provides best visible results. Non-invasive treatments do not even come close to the results achieved by this technique. 2. It is carried out under pure local anaesthesia so there are no risks associated with general anaesthesia. 3. Three-dimensional contouring can be achieved and majority of patients require one session only. 4. It can be combined with fat transfer.

If you are after modest improvement and do not mind having multiple sessions then non-invasive fat reduction may be suitable for you. This will not, however provide results comparable to laser assisted micro-cannula liposuction which remains the gold standard for body contouring. Non-surgical treatments may also prove more expensive.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon of Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has more than 10 years of experience with lasers in dermatology and aesthetic surgery. Dr Gheyi focuses on providing results oriented, cost effective and safe treatments. Visit www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 0800 0430737 for more information.

SHS 2016

The Sheringham Horticultural Society Summer Flower & Produce Show was held at the Lighthouse Community Church on Saturday August 13th.

With the better weather this year a bumper crop of high quality entrants made it a very competitive and impressive display of flowers, fruit and veg and craft work. Chairman Ian Hudson and show secretary Jo Hayton thanked all the competitors, judges and stewards for their efforts in making it a very successful show.

President Paddy Corden made all the presentations to the winners in all the categories.

Star of the show, dominated by the lady entrants for the second year in a row, was a hard-fought friendly battle between Louise Brock and Jacqui Hurst for many of the cups and trophies. In the Challenge Cup presented for most points in flower, fruit and veg combined, Jacqui took the prize. However

for the Ladies Challenge Cup for most points in all categories, Louise won by just one point.

Louise also took three other events, The Madaleen Collins Memorial Bowl, for best exhibit in Home Produce, the Regent Cup for most points in the Home Produce category and the Chairman’s Cup for gaining most points in the flower classes. Jacqui also took the RHS Banksian medal for most prize money in flowers and vegetables.

The Norman Stacey Memorial Trophy for Best Exhibit in vegetables was the only trophy to be won by the male entrants this year - John Theodore for his prize winning Selection of Vegetables.

handicraft section for the third year in a row.

Brenda Corden won the Peter Sullivan Cup for best hanging basket and followed that by presenting the best exhibit in the SHS’ Geranium competition, thereby winning the Silver Jubilee Cup.

The Margaret Stacey Memorial Bowl was presented to Jean Deans for Best Exhibit in flowers and pot plants

Gill Morris won the President’s Millennium Salver for the Best in Show awarded by all the judges for her quilt, which also won the Fearn Saunders Cup for best exhibit in the

Every year in the height of summer Sheringham in Bloom holds a competition to judge the best flower displays at all the various businesses in the town. At the same time both Sheringham in Bloom and the Horticultural Society judge the best residential front gardens from all over Sheringham. For the first time nominations were invited from the public and 13 were received. The flower displays in Sheringham have been particularly good this year, and it is to the credit of everyone, businesses and residents alike that the town has been alive with this wonderful display of scent and colour. If only we could give a prize to everyone! Thanks to the Judges who had the unenviable task of selecting the winners but the decision has been made, and the following are the winners 2016: Best Front garden nominated by the public Mr & Mrs Blackman, Samuels Court. Sheringham Stroke Support Group Moves to New Home

On 7 September the Sheringham Stroke Support Group will be moving from St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Sheringham to a new meeting place at the Communal Day Centre at Anchor Close, Sheringham.

entertainments and exercise sessions are held once a month. These exercise sessions are led by Sally King and Anita Lusher of North Norfolk Coastal Fitness, who hit the headlines

Our seated exercise sessions are far less strenuous than that as each member is encouraged to work comfortably within his or her individual limits. The Group aims to provide practical and emotional support to all those people in North Norfolk whose lives have been affected by stroke, including their carers. It offers a friendly, sociable environment in which they can meet and interact with people whose needs are similar.

The meeting on that day will include a talk by Frank Meeres on the Suffragettes of Cromer. It is not generally know that this quiet corner of the Norfolk coast was home to some of these militant women, many of them young and well-educated, who believed vehemently that women, as well as men, should be entitled to vote.

Meetings are held fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons from 2.15pm to 3.45pm and the Autumn Session lasts from Wednesday 7 September to 30 November. There will also be a Christmas Lunch.

We make a nominal charge of £10 to cover the whole of a spring or autumn session, carers come free but there are no other expenses. We pay for a door-to-door taxi service for anyone who needs it.

Free music gig set to rock the north Norfolk coast

A charity music gig is set to rock the north Norfolk coast this September.

our weekend. We can't wait to showcase some amazing talent, raise some money and bring a party to a beautiful part of Norfolk.

With more than 20 acts, Unplugged by the Sea will raise cash to help bring music into the lives of people having hospital treatment in the county.

Mr Carpenter said “Over the weekend we have many volunteers who will be helping us to raise as much as we can. People can throw their loose change into the buckets, have a go on our beach themed tombola, buy a balloon model or have their face painted.

The event, organised by Ben Carpenter from Overstrand and his girlfriend Loren Allen from Norwich, will take place at The Crown in Sheringham over the weekend of 3 and 4 September.

Mr Carpenter, who has previously worked as a music promoter organising Rock Bodham, said “The music has a bit of everything for everyone, from a male singing collective through to solo acoustic performers, bands with brass sections to reggae punk outfits. Above all, it is a totally free family weekend."

Acts performing include Morganway, a British Alt-Country outfit, Ukuele Simon, a ukuele player who plays current pop songs with a twist, men’s singing group Voicemale and Truescape, a four-piece Rock/Pop band.

All money raised at the event will go towards the renewal of a music licence at the Weybourne Day Unit at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

The pair were inspired to set up the Unplugged gig after Miss Allen’s father, Kevin, had been using the unit while having chemotherapy

treatment.

Miss Allen said “Nearly two years ago my family got told my dad had Cancer. Since then my dad has been in and out of the Weybourne Unit for treatment and despite never being able to be free of cancer, he is considerably better than he was. Patients and their families spend hours in the unit and I wanted to do something that would make their time there less of a chore. My dad has been so strong, working during intensive treatment and raising money for related charities himself, I wanted to show how proud I am of him and how much I love him by raising money too. Ben and I both love music. We go to festivals and local venues to see acts just like the ones we have playing over

The event will start at 12noon and run until 11pm both days with each artist on an outside summer stage for 30 minutes.

Landlord of the Crown, Bob Brewster, said “The Crown has always done its bit where charity is concerned and we have been hosting live music here for more than 35 years. Helping to host the event seemed like a fantastic combination of the two!"

I would like to say a big thankyou to those who helped me when I fell on Sheringham beach on Tuesday 2 August and hurt my nose and knee. Thankyou to the young girl who alerted her mother, who alerted the RNLI lifeguards to the situation. Thank you to the lifeguards who tended to my bleeding nose and cleaned me up. Thank you to the kind lady who cleaned my glasses and to the woman who brought me a cup of tea. Thank you to the lifeguards who kept my husband informed of the situation and rang my son to pick me up and take me to the Minor Injuries Unit in Cromer. No bones broken just a very sore nose and knee. Now much better and I am very grateful to the concern and kindness shown to a stranger. A big thankyou to all. Josie Greenfield, Sheringham

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

Kelling Probus Club held a special meeting at lunchtime on 18 August.

The lunch celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Club’s founding in 1986. The meeting was attended by Kelling Club members and their partners, and members and their partners from Holt Probus Club, and Sheringham & Cromer Probus Club. Ninety three attended the gathering at The Links Hotel West Runton, and were welcomed by Chairman David Vickery.

After a very pleasant social lunch, members and guests were entertained by Keith Loads, who told the gathering tales, anecdotes and jokes about Norfolk people, from his boyhood and all through his life. Due to his farming background, Keith was able to reminisce about village life and was thoroughly entertaining. He was thanked by Mike Clayton for a great end to the celebration.

Kelling Probus Club meets for lunch and a speaker every third Thursday in the month, usually at The Dales Hotel in Upper Sheringham. Membership is open to retired or semi-retired men. Membership has a wide coverage of members with experience in many fields of business. New members are always welcome - contact John Whittington on 01263 820333. St Andrew’s Ladies Association

This year has been a very special one – Her Majesty the Queen celebrated her 90th birthday and here in Sheringham, the St Andrew’s Ladies Association are celebrating their 45th anniversary.

During this time, Sheringham has grown in size in every way but it remains a friendly and delightful place in which to live and to bring up families or to retire.

In 1970, members and friends of St Andrew’s Methodist Church formed an evening Young Wives Group through meeting young mothers at the town’s Primary School gates, and the group quickly developed, holding their first AGM in 1973.

In the beginning, there was no joining fee, just a charge of 2d for a cup of tea! How life has changed!

By the mid 1970s, the Group had grown to over 100 with the addition of an afternoon Mother & Toddler Group and a Babysitting Circle.

Our aim is still the same – to provide the opportunity for ladies of any age, of any or no faith, to meet twice a month, to raise money for nominated charities – local, national and worldwide – in a friendly environment, to welcome new friends and to extend Christian fellowship and care under the umbrella of the Church.

We meet twice a month from September to the end of July in St Andrew’s Methodist Church Hall, Cromer Road at 7.30pm for approximately one and a half hours. We have a very varied programme of events, including speakers, outings to the local cinema and the Pier Theatre, fashion shows (recently by M & Co in Cromer) and slide shows. We also take part in the Flower Festival and this year we had a celebratory afternoon tea in a delightful garden where we had a photo taken, including some of our founder members.

We are always pleased to welcome new members and also visitors, and on Open Evenings we have been delighted to include gentlemen!

If you are interested in our organisation please contact Anne Barker on 01263 824887. We start our 46th year on Tuesday 13 September with a Bring & Share buffet in the Church Hall.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

In the last article I mentioned that we had recently received calls from several people whose cats had gone missing, so am very happy to report that another cat is now safely back home. Reggie was re-homed with his brother, Ronnie, in June and because they were quite timid cats, had only just started to go out. When both cats went missing, their new family was very worried, so were delighted when Ronnie returned home after a few days. As Reggie was still missing, posters and flyers were put up, everyone was informed (including the radio) and his family continued searching for him, but he appeared to have completely disappeared. At last, four weeks after he went missing, we received a message to say that he was home. Tired, very hungry and much thinner, he was delighted to be back, as was his family, although his brother did hiss when he first saw him. Because of his condition we can only conclude that he was locked in somewhere for at least part of that time. Plenty of tender loving care, food and drink in little and often portions, plus lots of sleep, were the order of the day to help him recover from his ordeal. The brothers soon settled back into their routine and, when their family are not available, spend time cuddled up together on the sofa or bed. Their family are very relieved to have them home and it goes without question to say these very lucky little cats are being spoiled rotten. Let’s hope some of the other cats that are missing come back home soon.

We recently mentioned websites selling cats (and other animals) and how these websites are working with other organisations to identify the claims being made. A recent communication from our Head Office is now asking for help to identify people selling kittens in poor health and as we believe it is very important to stop this I have included their appeal here so that anyone who has been affected can contact them direct.

Rachel, our Fundraising Officer, has been very busy of late organising collections but this has not stopped her from looking at new ways to raise money to help pay for food, veterinary bills etc for the cats in care. She is organising a night out for Bingo lovers at the St Benet’s Hall on Saturday 24 September. This is a new venture for us, so if you enjoy playing Bingo please come along and support us. More details are available in the ‘What’s on Where’ column.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

You may be aware of the importance of making a Will, but have you ever stopped to wonder what would happen if you became unable or incapable of dealing with your affairs?

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which allows you to appoint someone that you trust as an ‘attorney’ to make decisions on your behalf. This is often a spouse or a son or daughter over the age of 18. Attorneys can make decisions for you when you no longer wish to, or when you lack the mental capacity to do so. Who would you choose to look after your affairs if you were no longer able to do so?

There are two different types of Lasting Power of Attorney Property and financial decisions Health and welfare decisions *******************************

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY

If you are no longer able to look after your affairs then a special court called “The Court of Protection - Office of the Public Guardian” will supervise the control of your affairs. In many cases this could result in large legal bills often on an annual basis.

A Wonderful Evening of Music held in aid of Hospice

A concert given by Norfolk Choral Fellowship (NCF) at St Nicholas Church, Dersingham on Saturday 30 July raised the sum of £328.16 for The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House.

Those present enjoyed an inspirational evening of singing, alongside Iain Sturgeon on clarinet and Matthew Green on percussion. The excellent acoustics at this wonderful venue undoubtedly enhanced such an evening.

This is the second time the NCF have given a concert in support of the Hospice. Members of the group are either active or retired musicians in the Salvation Army and with strong affiliation to the organisation. Its members travel from all over Norfolk, freely giving of their time.

Peter Parker, volunteer at the Hospice and involved in the planning of the evening said "It's support like this, which is so important in enabling us to continue to provide much needed services in West Norfolk, that really makes a difference to the amount and quality of support we can provide to the local community”.

If you are a member of a local club, society or organisation and are interested in supporting The Norfolk Hospice this year please contact Jessica Walker, Community Fundraiser on 01485 601701 or email Jessica.walker@norfolkhospice.org.uk.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE FINALE Cromer Library on 24 September It’s been a MEGNEFICACKLE CHALLENGE FOR MALI-WILLS EVERYWHERE!

Or so they might say if you were in a Roald Dahl story. Over the course of the summer holidays children across North Norfolk have been making up odd words to add to a Wurdy Gurdy Machine in homage to the celebrated wordsmith Dahl as part of this year’s summer reading challenge. Their wonderful wordy inventions all contributed to one magnefickle story which is to be officially unveiled as part of the traditional certificate handout for the annual challenge. County Councillor Hilary Cox will be joined at Cromer Library on 24 September by the Town Mayor, Tim Adams, to enjoy the wondiforous story. They are giving out medals all morning with the official opening of the Wurdy Gurdy Machine at 11am.

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event, produced by The Reading

SPORT & REMEDIAL

Agency and delivered by the library network across the country to inspire all children to read their choice of library books over the school holidays.

It has become something of a tradition for our libraries across North Norfolk to join forces with the local arts organisation FALCON, or Facilitating Arts for Children of Norfolk, to put on a series of fun and creative workshops to run alongside the reading challenge to inspire during the long summer break.

The workshops were run by local writer and wordsmith Belona Greenwood, aka Miss Fluttlewordblurger, which have proved to be the perfect anecdote for children and parents looking for something fun and educational to do over the holiday season. The workshops ran across all eight north Norfolk libraries to wild celesterics and a big thank you to all those who took part and helped organise the sessions. Great Funnyous and laughjoy was had by all. The amaziful and incredibling story and pictures the children MASSAGE created are free to see

North Norfolk CCG holds its third annual meeting

NHS North Norfolk CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) will be holding its third Annual General Meeting and Stakeholder Conference in Aylsham on Tuesday, 13 September.

The purpose of the event is for staff, members, stakeholders and local people to come together to hear about the work of the CCG over the past year, and the challenges ahead.

The key topics for discussion will include out-of-hospital services in North Norfolk and rural Broadland, the role of volunteers in health, and social prescribing, whereby patients are referred to non-clinical services provided by voluntary organisations or community sector.

North Norfolk CCG’s Annual Report and Accounts for 2015-2016 will be formally presented at the meeting. This document can be found on the CCG’s website http://www.northnorfolkccg.nhs.uk

KEEPING UP WITH DEMAND

Local law firm Clapham & Collinge has expanded its network with

With an innovative new look and a refreshing approach to law, a well-known Norfolk law firm has expanded its network of offices in the county. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors has opened a branch in North Walsham, extending its reach across North Norfolk.

The new offices build on an existing presence in Norwich, Sheringham and Brooke for a firm which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year. As an independent law firm acting for individuals and business clients, the team at Clapham & Collinge believes in adopting an informal and friendly approach to its customers. Partner and Head of Family and Charities Departments Neale Grearson said: “We provide a full range of legal services for business and individuals in Norfolk; everything from divorce, conveyancing, wills, trusts and probate. We are very much a law firm that is trying to move away from the stuffy stereotype of solicitors’ offices with a more open and approachable stance and one where we want to encourage our clients to call when they have a problem without worrying about the bills starting to run up straight away. We take an innovative approach to meet the needs of our clients by offering appointments outside usual office hours and at their home or business if they prefer rather than coming into the office.”

Business clients also receive the full attention and expertise of the Clapham & Collinge team with services including debt recovery, litigation

and disputes, employment and commercial property law. With offices open six days a week, staff members at Clapham & Collinge are committed to making themselves more accessible to existing and new clients. Marketing Manager Louis Hilldrup-Boorman said: “As a firm of solicitors we work very hard to set ourselves apart from the competition in that we are more approachable and try to provide added value with our involvement in the community and our work with dementia awareness events and various training sessions. We also offer free advice mornings where people can come in and see our solicitors on a range of issues such as conveyancing, lasting powers of attorney, wills and family legal advice.”

One of the key tenets for Clapham & Collinge lies in striving for excellence within the profession and adopting innovative ways to resolve legal issues by finding solutions that meet the unique needs and goals of the individual or business. In offering a modern and comprehensive service, a high level of personal service is very much the company’s hallmark. Neale Grearson explained: “The opening of the North Walsham office was in response to customer demand and seemed a natural extension of our presence in that part of Norfolk.

“It follows on from the success of our Sheringham office and our move into a new office space last year. In North Walsham,

Fakenham Parish Church Biennial Flower Festival

however, we have a slightly different feel to our other offices which have a walk-in reception. This is more of a shop window approach with a more informal feel than other typical solicitors’ office premises.”

North Walsham will be open six days a week, including from 9am to midday on a Saturday. In the last few months, Clapham & Collinge has been building a presence in North Walsham through a series of networking events and has already made a number of strong business contacts in the area. With the offices now open, a launch party is planned for later in September.

For more information about Clapham & Collinge call 01603 693500, email info@clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk

6 – 10 October

“All things bright and beautiful; All creatures great and small. All things wise and wonderful; The Lord God made them all”

How better to praise God than by filling our church with flower displays that illustrate the opening of this well-loved hymn? Between 6 and 10 October you will be able to see 28 works of the flower arranger’s Art in Fakenham Parish Church. It is the occasion of the Biennial Flower Festival. Come along and soak in the vibrant colours; breathe in the heady scents; gaze at the artistic forms of the wonderful displays.

The Festival will be open to the public from 10am to 5pm on Thursday 6th, Friday 7th, Saturday 8th and Monday 10 October and from 12noon to 5pm on Sunday 9th. A special Festival Service will be held in the church at 10.30am on the Sunday. There will also be an opportunity for you to browse the new books and collectibles stalls while partaking of some refreshments. You are all welcome. Entry is free.

The Festival gives us all an opportunity to enjoy some quiet time out, revelling in the joys that flowers can give us, in the beautiful setting of our church; and the money raised helps to take forward the work of the Church in Fakenham. In the months prior to the start of the Festival, a sponsorship scheme was open to all members of the public, who were invited to sponsor one or more of the displays, thus providing the financial resources for the displays to be put together.

Judging by previous years, these five days will bring great pleasure to hundreds of people – local inhabitants and visitors – who will take home with them enduring memories of our church dressed in its brightest and most glowing colours Sheringham Independent 447

REDWINGS REMEMBERS ONE OF THE CHARITY’S MOST BELOVED RESCUED HORSES

Spirit’s harrowing tale and courageous recovery will live on in the hearts and memories of the Sanctuary’s teams and supporters alike.

could only do so by gently passing a rope round his neck.

August 2016 marks 10 years since the rescue of 13hh chestnut Welsh pony Spirit. His rescue story was one of the most upsetting witnessed by Redwings Horse Sanctuary during its 30plus-year history. Very sadly, 22-year-old Spirit passed away this summer and after ten happy years at the Norfolk-based Sanctuary, the charity wanted to pay tribute to this amazing pony. This is Spirit’s story:

Spirit was originally rescued by a lady in Middlesbrough who found him running loose and suffering from serious injuries having been chased around a housing estate by young boys on motorbikes. He was also attacked with fireworks and set upon by dogs.

When his injuries were later examined by a local vet, it was clear that while being terrorised Spirit had also been electrocuted with a cable resulting in burns to his side, flank and face and he had been beaten with a chain of some kind.

Consequently, it was unsurprising that Spirit was terrified of people and could not tolerate any human contact. Indeed, in the five years he was with his new owner, she never managed to touch him and when he needed to be led, she Sheringham Independent 447

Spirit’s owner realised this was not sustainable, especially if he needed veterinary intervention, and she therefore called Redwings for help. The charity’s external equine behaviourist Mark Hudson assessed Spirit to see if professional handling therapy would be of benefit. After two full days working with the then 13-year-old pony, Mark concluded that Spirit’s was the worst case of fear and trauma he had ever seen and it was agreed that Spirit would be offered a place at Redwings where he could undergo a long-term rehabilitation programme.

“It was astonishing how far Spirit was able to overcomeNow his fears during his time withgs us,” taking bookin reflected Behaviour Manager Sarah forRedwings’ Christmas & New Year. Hallsworth. “Horses have very long memories We are open but although he would neverevery forget hisday past during the holida y and period. experiences, with a lot of patience understanding we managed to get him to trust us enough to tolerate basic handling, wear a headcollar and receive routine treatments without causing him stress or anxiety.

“I was so proud of him every time he took a step forward in his recovery, it took such bravery. I will never forget the day his handler first managed to touch him!”

Arriving in 2006, Spirit spent ten years living happily at one of Redwings’ Norfolk sanctuary farms. Very sadly, on the morning of

Friday 17th June this year Spirit started to colic. His large intestine had twisted and he wasn’t responding to treatment; therefore the devastating decision was made to put him to sleep to ensure he did not suffer.

“The loss of Spirit has been greatly felt by everyone at that Sanctuary,” commented Redwings CEO Lynn Cutress. “His story touched so many people and his recovery embodied what is so special about Redwings and our work. It is important we remember him.

“We exist as a charity for horses like Spirit and we never give up on a horse, no matter their needs or how deep the scars of their past run. We were able to offer a place of safety to Spirit for ten years, and we extend our sympathies and thanks to his owner for her love and care for this very special chap. I’m so proud of our Behaviour and Care teams for enabling Spirit to live such a peaceful life with us after such a terrible ordeal.” 31

‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…’

We may only be only just past the Summer Bank Holiday, but attention is already turning to Christmas!

Whilst, for many, this is will be something to look forward to, Voluntary Norfolk is highlighting the plight of those for whom the prospect of the festive season may be a less happy occasion, and encouraging people across North Norfolk and Broadland to become part of the solution!

‘Christmas is often the focal point for many people experiencing loneliness’, according to Jonny Wood and Natalie Hickman, Voluntary Norfolk’s co-ordinators in North Norfolk, ‘but it is a year-round problem. Nowadays, when preparations for Christmas seem to begin even before summer has ended, this just underlines people’s sense of loneliness as they contemplate the likelihood of spending autumn and winter alone’.

Jonny and Natalie run the North Norfolk Health Volunteers scheme, a befriending service run in partnership with North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which links volunteers with people who are experiencing long term health conditions which leave them socially isolated and less able to participate in their local community. The most popular activity is a simple coffee and chat, but, depending on what volunteers wish to offer, it could involve a short walk, a game or craft activity, a quick hand with something in the house or garden or even a

short trip out in the car.

‘Volunteers can make an immense difference in a very short space of time’, according to Jonny and Natalie, ‘a weekly visit of maybe just an hour or two can leave people feeling that there is ‘someone out there’ who cares about them, and can dramatically reduce their sense of loneliness, even during the time they do spend by themselves.’

People often enquire about getting involved as Christmas approaches, but, as far as Jonny and Natalie are concerned, the earlier the better! ‘Our enrolment and induction process means it takes a little time before we can introduce a new volunteer to someone. If, for instance, a new enquirer contacts us in early December, we may not be able to get them introduced before Christmas. We are encouraging people to think about getting involved now so that volunteers can get started well before the clocks go back and the festive season takes over!

For further details please contact Jonny Wood or Natalie Hickman at Voluntary Norfolk on 01263 519454 or northnorfolkvc@ voluntarynorfolk.org.uk . Alternatively, visit them at their office at Merchants’ Place, 16 Church Street, Cromer, NR27 9ES.

If you would be interested in making a real difference to someone else’s life – not just for Christmas but in the run-up to it and beyond – then Jonny and Natalie would love to hear from you. You will need to be 18 years old or over, willing to undergo a DBS (police) check (which will be arranged at no cost to you) and provide two references, but in return you’ll get induction training on the basics of befriending, the ongoing support of
