Sheringham - Otterndorf Twinning Association
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
Twenty four members have recently returned from their biennial visit to Sheringham's German Twin town Otterndorf. Guests were hosted for the five night stay, with many friendships renewed and new ones being made.
The highlight of the visit was the visit to the island of Neuwerk, travelling the 10 kilometres by horse and cart and returning at high tide by ship.
We had an official welcome from the Burgermeister when we presented him with two lobsters for the town kindly donated by the Sheringham Society, which are now on display inside the crab pot given on a previous visit.
Hosts and guests joined together for a BBQ one evening at a local farm and, like Sheringham, there were numerous events taking place over the weekend, a triathlon, fireworks over the lake and an evening of free
New Life Cleaning Ltd
admission visits to all the town museums.
We travelled on a ferry across the River Elbe to visit Rendsburg situated by the Kiel Canal where we saw the numerous ways of crossing the Canal and watched the massive container ships passing through. National Anthems relating to each ship were played as they passed by the restaurant where we were having lunch.
We now look forward to welcoming a group from Otterndorf next year to celebrate 30 years of twinning.
For more information about the twinning association please contact Evelyn Meakin Tel 01263 823818.

Graham Allen 2016 awards announced
Pensthorpe play barn wins prestigious North Norfolk District Council conservation and design award
Hootz House in Penthorpe has been awarded the 2016 Graham Allen Award for its exceptional design and contribution to the built environment of the District.
Pensthorpe Natural Parks new play barn incorporates a 300m2 indoor adventure centre and was commended by the judging panel for its innovative approach to design and sustainability.
Chair of the judging panel and Cabinet Member for Planning Cllr Sue Arnold said “This project has really excelled, not only in its unique architectural design but also in achieving its goal of being truly sustainable and providing an exciting new attraction for the District.
“The standard of entries in this 35th year of the Graham Allen Awards has been excellent. There was extremely stiff opposition and all those shortlisted can be incredibly proud.”
Ninety per cent of the timber used in Hootz House construction was sustainably sourced, with the cedar cladding including 50mm-holes for insects and birds. The energy used on site is also provided by a new ground source heat pump.
During the Council’s annual Greenbuild event, members of the public were also invited to vote for their favourite shortlisted 2016 Graham Allen project for the People’s Choice Award. The vote attracted more than 1,000 votes.
The winner of the People’s Choice Award was Sheringham Rail Station for the development of the town’s new tourist information centre, public toilets, platform footbridge and new retail units. The project was praised for its attention to detail, quality of workmanship and for improving the town’s services.
Sheringham Rail Station also won the Commended Award from the Judging Panel.
The Highly Commended Award went to The Stable Yard, Rectory Lane, Northrepps. The project involved the difficult challenge of converting a pair of derelict Grade II listed stables for new use whilst maintaining their original character and appearance.
The judging panel commended the scheme for its success in securing the long-term conservation of the run-down stables and for adopting a traditional approach to repair and restoration.
The awards were presented at Oddfellows Hall, Sheringham on 21 September by Edward Allen, the eldest son of the late Graham Allen who was the first chairman of North Norfolk District Council.

Tourism boost for North Norfolk’s economy North Norfolk’s popularity as a tourist destination is booming with day trippers and people enjoying ‘staycations’ boosting the region’s economy that’s the verdict from the latest tourism report. The Destination Research report on the Economic Impact of Tourism for 2015 released last month shows that in north Norfolk more than 10,000 people are employed in tourism related roles (either part-time or full-time) and that tourism is worth more than £484m to the area annually.
That figure has been growing year on year according to previous annual reports, from £415m in 2012, £434m in 2013 and £470m in 2014. This equates to more than a 16% increase across four years. During that same time period, the number of full time equivalent jobs in the sector has increased from 6,550 to 7,831, a rise of nearly 20%. With more people visiting the area the sector supports local shops, pubs, cafes and transport services, bringing income to suppliers and producers and fuelling the wider north Norfolk economy. The report highlights that in 2015 there were 7,950,700 trips to North Norfolk with 7,392,000 day trips and 558,700 staying trips (2,383,000
staying nights).
The report estimates that the value of overnight trips is more than £139m with day trippers spending more than £259m.
North Norfolk District Council spends money on key coastal and countryside tourist attractions and facilities including:
• Four Blue Flag Beaches at Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham
• Two Seaside Award beaches at East Runton and Wells • Council owned assets such as Cromer Pier and Holt Country Park, the latter boasting one of three Green Flags across the district
• 27 car parks - 17 at beach or visitor attraction locations • Public toilets
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “North Norfolk is a stunning area and personally I believe it’s simply the best part of England.
“We’ve got spectacular beaches, areas of outstanding natural beauty both coastal and inland, S. McCLEAN - ELECTRICIAN and some absolutely fantastic towns and villages for people to enjoy. We recognise the importance ALL ELECTRICAL WORK UNDERTAKEN of tourism to the district’s Tel 01263 824987 / 07957 864958 economy and it is essential stuart.mcclean1@yahoo.co.uk part p registered 17th edition c&g to ensure north Norfolk

continues to attract people and welcome them back time and time again.”
Cllr Nigel Dixon, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet member for Economic Development and Tourism, said “Anecdotally lots of people tell me – and I have seen it myself – that our towns and villages are attracting more and more visitors. These statistics back that up and help measure that growth in black and white. “I’m not surprised that more and more people are waking up to the beauty of our district and deciding to spend their holiday time on our doorstep. North Norfolk is quite simply delightful and inspirational.”
Kayla Dunne, Brand Manager of Visit North Norfolk, said “Our marketing campaign this year, Nip to North Norfolk, focused on how to enjoy the unique attributes of the north Norfolk coast and countryside, such as big skies, beaches and the Broads National Park, through a series of ‘how to’ films. “Our campaign has reached a wide audience through TV adverts, radio promotion, PR and a social media campaign, which carries on throughout the winter and spring months, encouraging people to visit the area.”
North Norfolk District Council has supported Visit North Norfolk’s 2016 Nip To Norfolk Campaign to attract more people to the area to enjoy all the pleasures of the English coast – for example how to build a sandcastle, how to catch a crab and how to spot clouds.
“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.
As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.
When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.
I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

The Great Escape… from a retirement home Greg Pope, of Pope and Co. Solicitors, based in Cromer, is working with the Sheringham Players on a hilarious play which will be on at the Sheringham Little Theatre in November. Greg, who is an experienced actor and director himself, plays the part of Derek who helps two ladies who are on the run from the police!
The hilarious and cleverly written comedy is based on the storyline of the well -known film, ‘The Great Escape’, but instead of prisoners of war escaping from a POW camp in Germany, its two… er… mature ladies escaping from their residential home. The play is called ‘The Great Escape… from a retirement home’ and is written
by Andy Powrie. Dorothy and her friend, Ruth, are both welleducated ladies who realise that their seemingly ideal residential home has become a wellfurnished prison. They decide to escape, but all their efforts are thwarted by the unscrupulous director of the home, Troy Stanwick, aided by the head nurse, Phyllis. After several escape attempts, each more daring than the last, they finally escape and go on the run followed by the police, Troy Stanwick and Dorothy’s son, Roland. Who will help them? Who can they trust? Do they escape, or are they brought back to the home in disgrace? All will be revealed in this rib
More volunteers needed for Aylsham, Holt, North Walsham and Stalham Foodbanks
Having successfully opened two new distribution centres in the last twelve months, Cromer and District Foodbank is appealing for additional volunteers in its distribution centres in Aylsham, Holt, North Walsham and Stalham. “Volunteers are the life blood of our foodbank,” says Ella King, Project Manager. “Volunteering offers a chance to make a real difference to the lives of local people in financial crisis.”
Founded in 2012, the foodbank now works with over 95 partner agencies and met more than a thousand requests for food in the last financial year.
The charity offers food, support and signposting across 200 square miles of North Norfolk. “145 volunteers help us get emergency food to people in real need,” Ella says. “We want people to enjoy volunteering and there are lots of ways to get involved.” Anyone who might be able to help is invited to contact Ella by email info@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk or telephone 07826 376343.

Other highlights have been work with beekeepers in Tanzania, weavers in India, and forest fruit farmers in Senegal.
Altogether 18 projects in 11 countries have helped 558,900 people. So, every time you buy Fairtrade goods and craft work from a volunteer stall, not only do the workers get paid fairly, but the profit goes to Traidcraft Exchange to help fund these projects. I have just sent a cheque to Traidcraft Exchange, for £330, the second large amount this year. So well done and thank you to the many Fairtrade supporters in North Norfolk. Crab and Lobster Quiche and firm (about 20 mins)
Put the crab and lobster in the bowl and season. Separately, mix the eggs and cream.
Pastry 185g butter 200g flour Water ½ cup Seasoning
This recipe is a real favourite on our Sunday lunch menu and makes the most of the fabulous shell fish we get in from John Davies in Cromer, recent recipient of Norfolk Food and Drink’s Outstanding Achievement award and very well deserved too! It’s perfect for these autumnal days when one still needs something quite light, but also filling, and it’s fairly easy to prepare to boot.
We remain open for dinner every night (6-9pm) as well as our wonderful Sunday lunch and Afternoon Teas – and we’re taking bookings for Christmas parties! - so do come in and see us soon.

Festival launches 2016 Community Grant scheme
The Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival has announced it will be handing out £5,000 to local organisations through its Community Grant Scheme.
The Festival committee announced the total after the success of this year’s dinky beach hut auction. Since the Festival’s first charity auction in 2010, the organisation has donated more than £33,000 to local projects.
Charities and organisations based in the Cromer and Sheringham area can now apply to the scheme, which aims to benefit local good causes.
On Sunday, 28 August, the 7th Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close with the annual auction which saw 102 decorated beach huts go under the hammer.
Earlier in the year, the huts formed the Festival’s art trail and were displayed in businesses across Cromer and Sheringham. Over 400 individuals had a hand in decorating the huts, which were sponsored by local businesses. Organisations and charities in the
Cromer and Sheringham area can apply for grant funding for specific projects or for work that they would like to embark on.
Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “The Festival thought it vital to continue supporting charities local to Cromer and Sheringham which provide exceptional support to the local community.
“We are welcoming applications from organisations or charities based in and around Cromer and Sheringham. Projects or activities can include local community events, groups, sporting activities, and the purchase of specialist equipment. This list is not exclusive however and we urge anyone to get in touch to find out more.”
To apply for a grant organisations should fill in the application form which is available to download from the Festival’s website or by emailing enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk. Applications should be received by Saturday, 19 November 2016.

Cromer and District Food Bank ‘electrified' by Sheringham Shoal
Sheringham Shoal Community Fund has awarded a grant to the Cromer and District Food Bank to enable the purchase of a Nissan e-NV 200 van. This economic work horse, which has been supplied and sponsored by the Nissan dealership Crayford and Abbs in Bodham, North Norfolk, will cut C&DFB's vehicle running costs significantly. The Food Bank covers an area of 200 square miles, and last year supplied 3-day emergency food packages to 2409 people in need, including 920 children. At a running cost of just 2p per mile and with low maintenance costs, the electric van will make savings which will be used to feed more families in need. Ella King, Project Manager at the Food Bank said "We are very grateful to the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund for making this purchase possible. Every
12
penny we save on running costs means more help to local families in need of support."
The keys to the vehicle were presented to Ms King by Timothy Hardy, Financial Controller of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm at Wind Farm Place, the wind farm's O&M base at Egmere near Wells-next-the-Sea in North Norfolk.

Food Market & Craft Fair at SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Garden Centre Overstrand is ‘FROM GARDEN TO PLATE’ a huge success The last meeting of the Society in 2016 will be held on Thursday 20
On Sunday 25 September Garden Centre Overstrand, supported by Sheringham based events company Ruth Elizabeth Events, hosted its first ever Food Market & Craft Fair, and what a huge success it was.
Over 600 people attended the event, packed with over 20 local exhibitor stalls, along with Radio Norfolk who featured the event on the popular Sunday morning show, Treasure Quest, where David & Sophie found the treasure hiding in a trick by local magician Robert Rathbone.
October, with a presentation ‘From Garden to Plate’ by the Head Chef and Gardener from the Grove Hotel and Restaurant in Cromer, which has two AA rosettes. Much of the produce brought to the plate in the Grove Restaurant is grown in their own fruit and vegetable garden, orchard or poly-tunnel.
Many of us grow food for our families and value the freshness of our own fruit and vegetables whilst trying to avoid the anonymity of supermarket food. The next stage is to do justice to our produce and cook and serve delicious food and here is a chance to get professional advice to help make this possible.
The event raised £128 for Break Charity and the lucky winner of the hamper packed full of £100 worth of garden goodies was Mrs H from Cromer.
Victoria Sheridan, new owner at Garden Centre Overstrand, said ‘As this was the first time we had held an event like this we did not know what sort of turnout to expect but it is clear we need not have worried. It was fantastic to see so many people at the event’.
A Christmas event is now being planned for Sunday 6th November so make a note of the date in your diaries.
For more information or to book an exhibitors stand please contact Ruth Lowe on 07747 161880 or info@ruthelizabethevents.co.uk
For example, I would be grateful for help on how to use the giant pumpkins grown by my grandson, William Rawlings!
The meeting will be held in St. Joseph’s Community Centre, Sheringham commencing at 7.30pm. Free to members with a small charge for visitors. Bob Wilkinson

First World War thank you letter for knitting mittens for the war effort from a soldier to a child donated to Museum The Sheringham Museum has been donated a letter written in February 1918 by a soldier fighting on the front line in Italy to a 9 year old girl living in Beeston, near Sheringham, thanking her for knitting him a pair of mitten gloves.
Written by Private Ernest George Gale, the letter opens with the line “My Dear Little Friend” and goes on to say: “Just a line to thank you for the new mittens you sent to me. I am very thankful to you as the nights are very cold here and they will keep my hands nice and warm. Would you care to know anything about Italy? It is far different from England. Practically the only thing that is grown here is grapes.” Private Gale goes on to describe the agricultural practices of the local area, including using oxen rather than horses to plough, the lack of coal and the use of wood to stay warm. The letter concludes with “I have not seen a shop for months and we seem to be away from civilisation altogether. I have a little girl of my own at home in Dorset and I know she will be pleased when I tell her what you have sent me. I will now close hoping that this letter will find you quite well as it does me at present. Yours gratefully, E. G. Gale”.
The letter was sent to 9 year old Phyllis Dennis of Beeston. Taken by surprise in a war that was only meant to last a few months and be over by Christmas, the government encouraged the local population to “Knit for Tommy”, to plug the shortfall in uniform over the colder months. Hats, socks, special rifle mittens (with a trigger finger!), balaclavas and cardigans were all knitted. It wasn’t just clothing knitted either – the museum has on display two rare 100 year old hand knitted At Williams all of our work is carried out at our West Runton bandages on loan premises as it has been for the last from Southampton 30 years, no middlemen means

In our showroom we have pattern books from Parkertex, Linwood, Crowson etc and we are proud to be Sandersons fabric and wallpaper specialists . We now stock a range of home accessories including a large selection of Dora Designs doorstops and draught excluders.
University Archives, used during the battle of The Somme, where medical supplies couldn’t keep up with the horrific casualty numbers. They were knitted in cotton so that they could be boiled and re-used on other injured soldiers.
Museum Manager Philip Miles said “This letter is important to the exhibition as it shows that the wartime knitting drive also came to North Norfolk. It is lovely to think that this 9 year old girl played her part in the war effort and obviously treasured this thank you letter. We are delighted to be able to display it and are very grateful to the family for donating it to us.”
Using the details in the letter, museum volunteer Jane Crossen researched into the fate of Ernest Gale - the donor of the letter and a relative of Phyllis who died in 1982, had always wondered if he had survived the war as the letter was obviously treasured by Phyllis who had kept hold of it all her life and only discovered upon her death. Born in 1883, George died in 1959 so he survived the war. He married Ethel Ella Saunders in 1908. They had one child, Lorna Kathleen Ella Gale, mentioned in the letter, who was born in 1911 and died in 2000 in Taunton. Before the war Ernest was a carpenter and a gamekeeper and in 1939 (on the census) he was a dairy farmer. He enlisted in 1916 and finished the war on 4 November 1918. The donor family wanted the letter to be kept safe and the museum was delighted to be able to display it in the knitting exhibition until the end of September, thereafter it will be archived in the museum collection and available to those who wish to undertake any further research into the family.

School's playground project opens for business!
Friday 9 September was the culmination of a major project at Sheringham Woodfields School, which has been in the throes of a major £175,000 revamp of its very tired playground.
The splendid new inclusive, state-of-the-art area, which allows play for all regardless of need and disability, was formally opened by local MP, Norman Lamb and Chair of the Governors, Carole Fields.
The ceremony was watched by the school's pupils and the many generous people and organisations that donated the money to make it possible. These included representatives from Sheringham Town Council, the school's governing body, Sheringham Chamber of Trade, Sheringham Primary School, local businesses and, of course, parents.
"This has been an ambitious project for the school in terms of its scale, its cost and in designing a playground that would deliver play and learning opportunities for all," said James Stanbrook, Head Teacher. "The project, led by Matthew Smith has taken two years to raise the necessary funds, with feedback from staff and pupils to ensure the design was suitable for our pupils."
The playground has been designed with learning in mind and Rebecca Tate, Deputy
Head Teacher, has created learning packs to go with all the equipment so it can be used during lessons as well as break times.
"The school owes a debt of gratitude to all these people and organisations, and in particular Simon Turnbull, Site Manager of the School, for overseeing the project and working hard with the various contractors to ensure everything was completed in time for the beginning of the new school year," said Matthew Smith, Business Manager at Woodfields School. "The children have already road-tested the equipment and given it the seal of approval!
"The school has appointed a member of staff to lead on play, which will ensure that we get the
most out of the area, and we have also purchased balance bikes, ball sport and balance equipment to further improve the hard standing areas and to use on the newly installed roadway. In addition to all this, we have introduced a small stage for which pupils have designed the backdrop, so budding thespians can rummage through the fancy dress shed and ‘take to the footlights'."
Everyone who attended the opening ceremony was given the opportunity to tour the new facilities, meet staff and pupils and enjoy a cup of tea and slice of cake provided by About with Friends.
Matthew concluded by saying, "The new playground is a big asset to Sheringham Woodfields, and we plan to extend its use by means of offering after school clubs and summer play sessions. Both these schemes will help to provide respite for families and carers."

More than 1,600 people were named in the Liberty £1.2billion tax avoidance scheme, making it the largest avoidance scheme ever marketed. Investors included celebrities, top businessmen, criminals, doctors, lawyers and even a judge. It centred on a music industry investment scheme. Another company Ingenious marketed tax-efficient film industry investment schemes. Many celebrities with ‘right on’ credentials have been exposed, to the delight of the media. But, have the General Anti-Avoidance Regulations now gone too far? The developments are disquieting. The bill raises the spectre of retrospective penalties against advice given in good faith.
The Financial Secretary to the Treasury has stated that those who provide the services that enable aggressive tax avoidance ‘should bear real risks and costs for their choices’. The Financial Times commented that ‘taking battle to the supply side of the tax avoidance industry is sensible’. services Existing sanctions

do nothing to deter the sale of ‘off-the-shelfschemes’, as a barrister’s opinion backing them has to-date been enough to validate them.
The proposals for how the new regime will work have prompted widespread unease in the financial professions. There has always been a fundamental principle that arranging ones affairs in such a way as to pay less tax is not illegal. This remains a cornerstone of tax planning, but this is slowly being chipped away. In the Government’s desire to respond to public concern about massive tax evasion by the very wealthy, it is hoped that they do not prevent millions of people from accessing advice and taking steps to arrange their affairs tax-efficiently.

POORS AND PLOUGHLET TRUST A Helping Hand this Christmas
A Trust in Sheringham/Upper Sheringham is hoping to make Christmas a little bit easier for some families through the award of grants.
People in the town can apply for a Christmas Grant from the Poors and Ploughlet Trust, which was set up to give financial assistance to people residing in what was the Ancient Parish of Sheringham and Upper Sheringham.
Grants are made each December to assist with the expenses of Christmas and to provide a festive “perk”.
Applicants must be in receipt of a ‘means tested benefit’ such as Pension Credit, Council Tax Rebate or a similar benefit.
The trust is also able to give financial assistance to people who can show a particular need, for example those who might need household repairs, household equipment or aids towards a specific disability. The Trust can also help certain groups such as young and old peoples’ organisations and community groups.
The overall consideration is that the applicant has to satisfy the residential qualification previously mentioned and to show that there is a need for assistance.
The Charity is a long established Parish charity, is very well off and routinely does not spend all its income. The Trustees would like to attract more applications, including for the Christmas Grants. These have for years been routinely provided to people who are entitled to means tested benefits and living within the ancient Parish boundaries.
To apply for a Christmas Grant please get in touch with the Secretary of the Trust, Sally Gill by calling 01263 514559 or emailing sallyg5@btinternet.com. The closing date for applications is 10 November.

FREE Spooky Fun at Bure Valley Railway!
Throughout the half term holiday, 22nd October to 30th October 2016, the Bure Valley Railway will be holding its popular children’s event, “The Spooky Express”. Trains will operate throughout each day from both Aylsham and Wroxham Stations (see timetable). A children’s competition to see how many spooky items can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this themed event. Also, the Railway’s resident Bear will be dressed up for the occasion to welcome each train at Aylsham Station.
To make this a truly family friendly event, the Railway is giving free travel for every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum of 2 children per adult, train only). No prior booking required.
Susan Munday, Business Manager and organiser of this event, says, “Children of all ages can enjoy lots of spooky fun without it being too scary!” Sheringham Independent 449

1940s Weekend 2016
This year’s 1940s weekend, organised by North Norfolk Railway, saw the towns of Sheringham, Weybourne, and Holt entirely transformed. The extraordinary efforts of local businesses, and participants from inside and outside the towns, made the event a genuine success once again.
The Friday did not seem like a promising start; it rained heavily the whole day. However, when the weather pulled through, the weekend was so successful that North Norfolk Railway were forced to stop selling tickets for a time on the Saturday. The NNR worried that there would not be enough seats on the trains to get everybody home. There was music from The Sheringham Salvation Army Band, Nostalgia Unlimited, American Tan & Timescape and even gramophone music. To go with the music there were Jitterbug dancers. Visitors could experience wartime rations and spam sandwiches from the NAAFI at Weybourne, and a cup of char and wad from the Institute tearooms at Holt. The new extension at Sheringham station provided an

excellent panoramic view on many of the events around the town. Local shops participated by doing up their shops with suitable features as bombs poking out of rooftops and dark green camouflage netting, -- many serving customers in full 1940s attire.
The four o’clock parade showcased the stunning efforts of all who dressed up for the event. Every profession and occupation was covered. We had navy officers and army officers, policemen, army men, and nurses. Sheringham high-street was full to the brim. All involved showed a positive spirit that would have pleased Rosie the Riveter.
Holt increased their involvement this year. There were more pipers, more vehicles, and an expanded Vintage Bus service. Chrissie Rayment, of North Norfolk Railway and Event Manager, stated there were as many as 4,500 people on the buses’ park and ride service in Holt. Chrissie also wishes to thank everybody who got involved on a local level and all participants from outside the towns that helped make the event another successful weekend for all.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Most people are now aware that our branch is run completely by volunteers with no paid staff involved in the work that we do. We give our time willingly but, obviously, this time is precious. We cannot always respond immediately to requests for help but do the best we can within the time we have available. When Stephanie receives calls for urgent help she will often spend hours trying to arrange something to help the caller and to find a solution. Sometimes people ask for help but do not answer calls when she rings back. This means that she has wasted a great deal of time which she could have used to better purpose, especially bearing in mind that, not only does she care for some of the cats, answer and deal with the calls to the cat phone, but she also works.
A recent call from someone requesting urgent help for a stray cat with newborn kittens, because she would be moving that week, was something that could not be left. Although all the pens were full and some fosterers were going on holiday, so cats were being moved temporarily to a cattery, she decided this was an instance where we could use the temporary pen in the shed to house this needy little family. Several phone calls were needed to ensure care would be in place and the pen and shed had to be made ready to take the temporary occupants. She advised the person caring for this mum and kittens that we could help but she would need to get them to us. The person indicated she could not respond at that particular moment due to a health problem within the family and would get back to us. When she did not return the call, because of the urgency of the situation, Stephanie rang her back and left a message on the answer-phone. This and several more calls went unanswered. We can therefore assume that the person managed to find a place for the cats elsewhere. We have no problem with this as our concern was to make sure the cats would be safe. However, we regard it as being extremely rude of the person for not responding to our calls as this wasted a lot of time.

Kelling Probus Club
Kelling Probus Club met at the Dales Hotel in Upper Sheringham on Thursday 15 September. Those present observed a silence in memory of the late Bill Day, a popular and well-respected member of the club. The address at this meeting would no doubt have fascinated Bill, as it was presented by fellow photographer Chris Taylor, whose images in local newspapers would be familiar to many.
On this occasion, Chris described and illustrated the advantages and multiplicity of applications of aerial drone photography in recording both still and video images. Commercially, these include agricultural surveys that can selectively identify areas of plant nutritional deficiencies, building surveys, most particularly roof surveys, which may be accomplished without the expense of scaffolding, and promotional photography for hotels, golf clubs and estate agencies. Chris described the legal restrictions and licensing authority that regulates commercial aerial drone usage but commented upon the limited powers of enforcement especially for non-commercial drone flights. The video and still recordings he presented were of astonishing clarity and included many of significant artistic merit. His presentation closed with a demonstration flight that, blessed by beautiful weather, displayed the extraordinary precision of flight and camera control afforded by geo-sensing and self-levelling technologies.
Kelling Probus Club welcomes enquiries from retired professional and businessmen who may wish to join us for fellowship, lunch and interesting presentations. John Whittington will be pleased to hear from you on 01263 820333.

SHANTYMEN IN A SHARING MOOD
Sheringham Shantymen have hatched a cunning plan to avoid accusations of reigniting fiery “Crab Wars” passions as they plan another daring cross-border raid under the cloak of darkness.
The popular singing group staged a sell-out concert on Cromer Pier last year to crown 25th anniversary celebrations. Several local charities collected handsome cheques as a result.
Now the Shantymen are looking forward to a rousing return to the Pavilion Theatre in early November – with proceeds being shared equally between Sheringham and
Cromer Lifeboats.
“I think this arrangement shows that not only do we come in peace, but that we are determined to build as many new bridges as possible. It’s not only Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft who need them!” quipped musical director Brian Farrow.
“We have savoured another highly successful season of gigs near and far after those anniversary jollifications and we’re delighted to return to our neighbouring town to set the seal
on continued success.”
Making Waves Again promises another top class musical treat on Sunday, 6 November at 7.30pm. Tickets are available now at £10 (concessions £9) from the Pier Pavilion Theatre Box Office on 01263 512495.
Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper has again been invited to make the Shantymen feel welcome and remind them how to behave in what many consider to be north Norfolk’s premier seaside resort.
“There’s a very thin line between healthy rivalry and open conflict. It’s my job to ensure all goes as smoothly as possible. A few cheap laughs at the Shantymen’s expense could well creep into proceedings” said Mr Skipper.
Thread lift goes non-surgical. A unique non-surgical facelift from Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic
We have been using a variety of face and neck lift techniques at the Coltishall Clinic. From Surgical face-lifts, laser facelifts, liquid facelifts to very gentle no needle radiofrequency lifts. Thread lifts have been around in various forms for last many years. Recent refinements however make this procedure very attractive.
So what has changed? Dr Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCCAM Medical director and laser surgeon explains- ‘three things’1] The procedure has changed from a surgical procedure to nonsurgical. We do not need to use a knife anymore. 2] The threads have changed from permanent threads to reabsorbable ones-same as used in fillers.
KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk
3] The price has come down. In the past you could have a surgical face-lift for not very much more so I was reluctant to do a thread lift at such a higher price point. Now these advantages have resultant in a resurgence of interest in thread lifts. A thread lift enables two joint actions: • A lift effect as soon as threads are applied for an immediate and discreet result. • A regenerative effect, for progressive and natural results.
How is the procedure performed? No special preparation is required prior to Silhouette Soft® treatment. After a small local anaesthetic, the doctor inserts the thread under the skin to a depth of about three to five millimeters. No incision is required, as the suture is inserted using a fine needle. It is held in place with absorbable cones. Once the suture as been applied, the doctor performs slight compression of the tissue to reshape it by hand and to obtain the desired lifting effect. The non-inserted ends of the suture are cut off. One or more sutures may be applied, depending on the patient and treated area. What is the recovery like? After Silhouette Soft© treatment, as with any cosmetic treatment, some slight swelling, redness or bruising may sometimes be observed, but these disappear within days. There is sometimes a slight wrinkling of the skin (required for optimisation of the treatment), which disappears very quickly.

Stay Well This Winter – book your flu vaccination now GP practices in North Norfolk and rural Broadland are urging people to help themselves stay well this winter by booking in for a free NHS flu vaccination.
Flu clinics are currently taking place so now is the time to ask at your GP practice if you think you are eligible. The message is: don’t put it off, take up the offer from your GP as soon as you can. Flu is not like a bad cold; it is a debilitating condition that affects the whole body. It can increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, and it can also make existing conditions worse. Serious cases of flu can result in being admitted to hospital, and in some instances could be fatal.
Clinical Commissioning Group and a GP in Stalham, said: “Dedicated ‘flu clinics are run by almost all GP practices up and down the country. If you book a slot at a special clinic, or even during a normal practice day, you can ensure you get the vaccine early and have the maximum benefit through the autumn and winter months”
“We strongly urge everyone who meets the NHS eligibility criteria to ring their GP practice and make sure they get vaccinated promptly.” GP practice clinics – as experienced patients will know – are usually very busy and wellcoordinated. Doctors and nurses are on hand to vaccinate a patient every two minutes or so.
During the clinics, many practices also check patients aged over 65 for atrial fibrillation, looking for any signs that their heart may be starting to beat irregularly. This is another important way of looking after their On Friday 14 October at Sprowston Manor Hotel, Break Charity is patients’ health. Dr Anoop Dhesi, chairman of North Norfolk
Silver Linings Gala Ball Celebrates Break Charity Supporters
celebrating individuals, groups and businesses who currently support and have supported the charity in the past, at a sparkling Silver Linings’ Gala Ball hosted by Break Patron and BT Sports presenter, Jake Humphrey.
This is the inaugural year for the Silver Lining awards which it is hoped will become an annual event in the autumn calendar.
A Break ‘Silver Lining Award’ is recognition for a group, individual or organisation that has achieved outstanding results for Break Charity through key initiatives, helping the charity to change young lives across East Anglia.
Also, don’t forget that if you’re aged 65 or over, you are eligible for the pneumococcal vaccine, which will help protect you from pneumococcal diseases. The flu jab for adults – and nasal spray for children – can be a lifesaver. It is safe and it cannot give
you flu, because it does not contain live viruses. People with serious health conditions, adults over 65, pregnant women, some carers and many healthy children, all qualify for a jab free from the NHS. ADULTS You are eligible to receive a free flu jab if you: • are 65 years of age or over • are pregnant • have certain medical conditions • are very overweight • are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay care facility • receive a carer's allowance, or are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill • are a front-line health and social care worker. (It is your employer's responsibility to arrange vaccination for you)
CHILDREN The flu vaccine is recommended for: • children over the age of six months with a long-term health condition • children aged two, three and four plus those in school years one, two or three • children aged between six months and two years who are eligible for the flu vaccine (this group should have the flu jab) • children eligible for the flu vaccine aged between two and 17 (this group usually have the flu vaccine nasal spray). Your GP practice, health visitor or school nurse can provide more information, or there is much more detailed guidance available online at www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/pages/ who-should-have-flu-vaccine.aspx

Norman Lamb chosen to run again at
North Norfolk Member of Parliament Norman Lamb has been backed to run again at the next General Election.
The Liberal Democrat MP has represented North Norfolk since 2001. At the election last year, he finished more than 4,000 votes ahead of the Conservatives. He served as a minister in the coalition government and won a national reputation for his work to promote better mental health care.
A packed meeting of Liberal Democrat members backed him unanimously to be their local candidate at the next election. Mr Lamb told the meeting in Aylmerton that there was a greater need than ever for moderate, common sense voices to be heard in Parliament and politics.

"Jeremy Corbyn is dragging the Labour Party to the far left but it is really dangerous to have one party in power which is completely dominant. There is a massive risk of arrogance and complacency on the part of the Conservative Government. Those of us who care about delivering high quality, affordable public services and making sure that everyone's voice is heard need to work together to provide a common sense alternative." said Mr Lamb.
"It has been an unbelievable privilege to represent North Norfolk people in Parliament since 2001. It is a great honour to be chosen as Liberal Democrat candidate again. But in uncertain times, I know local people need a strong and experienced voice in Parliament more than ever. I have just completed my

special gift for someone this Christmas. This imaginative solo exhibition includes an extensive & diverse collection of original paintings, framed and unframed limited edition prints starting from £95 each and greeting cards.
Twenty-nine-year-old, Norfolk-based artist Samuel Thomas has been exhibiting for eight years and prides himself on being a self-taught artist, as he is constantly developing and experimenting with his painting techniques and subject matter. You may be a little surprised to discover some of the artist’s paintings are produced using sand collected from Cromer beach. He has also used coffee to paint with. Samuel enjoys abandoning the traditional flat canvas and instead paints onto used surfboards, life rings washed up on the beach and on old floor boards ripped up from the studio. ‘Although my collection is diverse in terms of style and subject, the main theme that runs throughout all of my paintings is that of ‘escapism’, in regard to the fact that all of the paintings capture idealistic perfect moments in life,’ explains Samuel Thomas. You can view or purchase artwork direct from the website: www.samuelthomasart.co.uk
The exhibition is from 22 - 30 October in the Function Room, Red Lion, Brook St, Cromer, NR27 9HD and is open 10am – 5pm every day with free admission

District Councillor to scale Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for charity
Cllr Hilary Cox will climb to 5,795m in five-day challenge for Multiple Sclerosis centre
Councillor Hilary Cox is set to ascend Africa’s largest mountain just four months after having knee-replacement surgery at the age of 65. The Cromer District Councillor has already reached Everest Base Camp in an expedition five years ago, but will now fly to Tanzania to conquer dormant volcano Kilimanjaro.
Cllr Cox said “I am always up for a challenge especially when it’s for a good cause. If you keep yourself well and fit you have the potential to do more. My doctor wouldn’t give me a medical certificate for the trip because I had problems with my knee, so I had to have a new knee, and it’s working very well at the moment.”
Cllr Cox has been in training by walking as much as possible and recently walked the Yorkshire Three Peaks. She added “The main training I’m doing is breathing. When I did the Everest Base Camp I had a bit of altitude

sickness, so I am trying to make sure I can control that as much as possible while I am going up Kilimanjaro.” The trek up Kilimanjaro has different climate zones with tropical forest, volcanic and arctic conditions. For the five-day ascent and one-day descent Cllr Cox will be sleeping in a tent.
Cllr Cox is raising money for The Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Norwich, the chosen charity of a friend who is also ascending Kilimanjaro. She said “I have been to the centre and it’s brilliant. It offers training for all types of neurological conditions, supporting people to keep moving through the learning of skills and crafts.
“We are on track to raise £2,500 between the two of us and we hope to raise even more.” To donate please go to: mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/barryfoulser2

A strategic business review will now need to consider the future management structure of the authority following three senior resignations.
Leader Cllr Tom FitzPatrick said “We received notice of resignations from the three officers concerned. North Norfolk had entered into the interim shared management arrangements on the basis of good faith, openness and transparency.
I have now written to GYBC Council Leader ending the interim shared management agreement in order that North Norfolk can focus on the handover to the new management structure we will need to put in place. As an authority North Norfolk remains totally committed to delivering on our four year plan for our communities and that’s where our focus will remain. Cabinet believes that, as an authority, North Norfolk District Council requires its own dedicated management team. We will carry out a strategic management review to ensure we can deliver the programme of work we are elected to deliver and the savings we need.” 30

Statement from Labour Party following resignation of three senior council officers:
The Leader of North Norfolk District Council has been told to ‘get a grip or resign’ after a three senior officers at the council walked away to work for neighbouring Great Yarmouth Borough Council instead.
The Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council quit after a job-sharing arrangement came to an end in September. She will now be joined by North Norfolk District Council's Head of Finance and Head of HR at the council in Great Yarmouth.
The local Labour Party has called on the Leader of the ruling Tory group to "get a grip" after a string of embarrassing news stories pushed the local council into the spotlight, which they believe has led to "chaos".
The Tory administration has been accused of sitting on large reserves while making big cuts to local services, and awarding themselves a 23% pay rise while some have failed to pay their council tax.

Stephen Burke, Chair of North Norfolk Labour Party, said “Losing one senior officer is careless, losing half of the senior management team is completely incompetent. This story follows the bad press over councillors awarding themselves 23% pay rises while making cuts to local services, and a number of councillors being in council tax arrears for a number of years. The ruling Conservative group has left our district council in chaos.
The loss of our local council’s most senior staff raises massive questions about the costs and impact of the sharing arrangement with Great Yarmouth. Why have they resigned? What will councillors do to ensure proper leadership at the top of the council? What has been the cost to taxpayers in North Norfolk? Was there not a clause in place in the agreement to stop the poaching of staff? And how much will be spent filling the gaps in staff?
These are questions which Cllr FitzPatrick as Leader of the Council must answer. He must very quickly get a grip on our local council or do the honourable thing and resign.”

Fishing on the day was slow with plenty of rain from lunchtime onwards but competitors braved the wet conditions to take a few small carp and silver fish - heaviest weight on the day went to Martin Chase of Cross Street, Cromer.
Next Generation Tackle Ltd sponsored prizes, a travel rod and holdall, reel and landing net and handle, which was presented to Martin Chase.
A total of £450 was raised by the attending anglers, which goes to NNDSA for use by members with rehabilitation activities such as gym with trained coach, aquarobics and the occasional social trip.
Many thanks to all those who helped organise and run the event, especially the anglers and friends who raised the much-needed funds. Doug Hoy

North Norfolk District Council presents Orchestras Live North Norfolk 2016/17 season A series of the highest quality orchestral concerts developed in partnership with Orchestras Live and community organisations. The concerts, now in their sixth year, will take place in North Walsham in October, followed by Holt in February 2017 and concluding with Sheringham in March.
Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Culture said “We are delighted to host such a talented group of musicians. This new programme of public concerts promoted by local community groups with the support of Orchestras Live is incredibly exciting. This year’s concert series continues to make a major contribution to the cultural life of the district and firmly underlines North Norfolk District Council’s commitment to the arts.”
The 2016-17 series reflects a wide range of concert music, with a repertoire which stretches from the 15th to 21st century. Highlights for this year include October’s performance of new works by Manchester Camerata’s current artist in residence Deborah Pritchard, including a concerto for leading trumpet soloist Tine Thing Helseth.
In February, City of London Sinfonia will join renowned violinist Alexandra Wood for an exciting performance including Vivaldi’s classics. The concert series concludes in March with Sinfonia Viva, featuring soloist clarinet and director Chris Swann. This collaboration will include a narrative version of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Covering the full spectrum of classical

‘Over My Dead Body’
is The Jubilee Players’ autumn offering, a perfect evening’s entertainment as the nights draw in.
This light hearted comedy centres around Gerald. Following the death of his wife Helen, Gerald hopes to spend the rest of his days comfortably alone with his memories - doing his best to avoid the cooking of his daughter Shirley, and patiently enduring the awkwardness of his son-in-law Mark. However, unbeknownst to him, Helen had other ideas…
performance this series is in partnership with local community partners Arts North Norfolk, FALCON (Facilitating Arts and Literature for the Children of Norfolk) with St Andrews Church in Holt, and Sheringham Little Theatre.
Cllr Palmer added “We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of Orchestras Live which does so much to produce orchestral events and projects across England and, through their long-standing partnership with North Norfolk, offers our audiences the opportunity to experience a series of orchestral concerts of the highest quality.” The first concert at the Atrium Theatre with the Manchester Camerata takes place at 7.30pm Saturday October 29. Tickets cost £16 for adults and £12 for 16 years and under and are available at www.artsnorfolk.org or 01692 218060.

As women start turning up unexpectedly from past and present, it soon becomes clear that his late wife had gone to great lengths to ensure he would not be alone in his retiring years. With the situation spiralling out of control, and his independence under grave threat, he, Shirley and Mark will have to come up with a plan as quickly as possible before things get out of hand!

Norwich City FC Review
Since my last review of Norwich’s home game against Cardiff, the Canaries have been flying high, ever since going on an unbeaten run of five games in all competitions.
After Cardiff, Norwich were paid a visit by newly promoted Wigan in the midweek kick off. Norwich played quite poorly on the day, however bright spark Jacob Murphy, who is having a real breakout season this year alongside twin Josh, scored two goals to give Norwich a 2-1 home win after Jordi Gomez pulled one back for Wigan late in the second half.
After the win against Wigan, Norwich then faced tough opposition in the form of Nottingham Forest as they travelled away. Norwich had a very poor start to the game as they went behind just before half time, as
Yoga at Autumn Equinox
Greek striker Vellios prodded Forest ahead after a defensive lapse in concentration by Norwich. However Norwich performed a remarkable comeback as they came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1, after goals from Howson and Dorrans, with the latter’s goal being a fine volley from the edge of the box with the Forest keeper stranded.
After beating Forest, Norwich then faced a trip to Merseyside to face Everton in the League cup, a game which not many Norwich fans expected to progress past. Steven Naismith scored against his old club as his scuffed shot managed to loop over the helpless Marten Stekelenburg. After the break, Norwich continued to resist the swarm of Everton attacks as Josh Murphy scored an absolute wonder goal, taking the ball past two players before rifling home a 20 yard shot.
Most recently, Norwich faced newly promoted Burton Albion, a game which, if they won and other results went in their favour, could put them top of the table. Norwich won 3-1 after goals from Olsson, Jacob Murphy and a first ever career goal for fan favourite Ivo Pinto, as he topped off a good home performance with a nice run and finish in the dying embers of the match.
On Thursday 22 September Vee Zappia along with two friends, Ruth Hedges and Debbie Mason, organised an open air yoga event to celebrate the Autumn Equinox, to raise funds for the Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund for Epilepsy Research UK. Around 60 people attended and the weather, the environment and the whole feel of the occasion was truly magical.
Ages ranged from 3 years to 75 years. There was also a small raffle for which a few local small businesses had donated prizes – our grateful thanks to them. The total raised in just over an hour was an amazing £500.
Vee teaches at FFMA Gym on Louden Road in Cromer on Tuesdays 10am and on Wednesdays at 7.30pm, at The Belfry Centre in Overstrand on Wednesdays 10am and Thursdays 6pm and at Cromer Country Club on Tuesdays at 11.30am. All classes are £4. Veronica Zappier
