Firework Fears!

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible. Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary. Always keep dogs and cats indoors during fireworks and make sure dogs are walked earlier in the day to avoid being out when fireworks are let off. Many pets go missing at this time of year when they get scared by fireworks so make sure all pets are easily identified with a collar and tag or microchip (with up to date contact details) so that they can be reunited with you if they get scared and manage to run off.

It can help to build your pet a safe den and keep windows, doors and curtains closed to minimise noise as much as possible. Some pets will find it comforting to have an alternative noise so keeping the radio or television on can help to reduce awareness of the sound of fireworks. Pets will often look to you for reassurance during stressful situations so try to act as normally as possible and make sure not to tell pets off if they are behaving in a stressed manner during fireworks. It is also important to reward calm and relaxed behaviour with cuddles and treats! There are also several medicines and techniques which can be used to reduce anxiety around firework season. Pheromone-based and natural calming products come in several varieties including plug-in diffusers, tablets, liquids, collars and sprays. These products can help pets feel more relaxed and calm within the environment and should ideally be started at least 48 hours (preferably longer) before fireworks are due to start. Noise phobia CDs are also available and are designed to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a long period of time in the run up to Firework Night.

It’s also important to remember small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs as well as birds during this stressful season. These pets can also get easily scared and if possible these pets should be moved into a quiet room or shed. If this is not possible cages should be covered to reduce the sound of the fireworks and turned to face a wall so the firework lights are less visible. It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover. Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed. As November creeps up its time to start thinking about Firework season and what we can do to help our pets. We offer FREE OF CHARGE firework advice for our clients as well as stocking a variety of calming products. Pop in or call us on 01692 407126 for advice from our friendly team.

Local web designer wins contract for the new Sheringham Town Council website website and developing our online presence.”

Local website designer, Nathan Lomax, co-founder and Director of Quickfire Digital has won the contract to develop a website and online presence for Sheringham Town Council

It’s all change online at Sheringham Town Council!

Over the last few months the Council have been seeking to identify a web design company, who would develop a dynamic, interactive and up-to-date online presence for the town. Following presentations to the Town Council, a contract to develop the website, has been awarded to Nathan Lomax, a young, local web designer, co-founder and a Director of Quickfire Digital.

Hedgehog Haven

Councillor Liz Withington, a member of the Council’s Website Development Working Party said “It is important that our website meets all the legal requirements we must fulfil as a council, but we also want to effectively connect with the community we represent. The purpose of the website is to show more clearly the services the Council provides, how it works, and the ways it supports the town to develop and grow, to meet the needs of Sheringham residents and businesses, as well as visitors to the town.”

Councillor Peter Farley pointed out that, developing a website and the use of social media are essential ways, which will enable the Council to both share information and have a greater understanding of the concerns and needs of all parts of the community. He stated, “It is really important for the future of towns like Sheringham, with strong communities, that young people and families are encouraged to become involved in the development and running of their town. Using social media and modern websites are the way to do this, which is why, as a Council, we are launching a new

The website is currently under construction and the council need your help in gathering information about the community organisations, social groups and community groups, which are going to have sections on the website. If you are involved in a group or organisation and would like to be included in the website, please send an email to the Clerk at shercouncil@btconnect.com marking your email ‘website’ in the subject line. The information required includes the group name, an outline of the group, venue and meeting times and wherever possible an email for contact. Photographs of the group and its activities are most welcome and can also be attached to the email. Information to be included should be returned by 30 November if possible. The Town Council cannot guarantee that all information will be included and reserves the right to edit information where it feels it is appropriate.

Watch this space for further developments and how you can contribute to the development of this community-focussed website, coming shortly.

This is a very busy time of year with lots of autumn juveniles coming in.

A hedgehog needs to weigh a minimum of 650grams to survive hibernation, so these small hogs do not have time before winter sets in to build up enough body fat.

Those coming in now will be kept warm and fed and released in early spring.

Please keep a look out for these small hogs - if you find one place it in a high sided box with some kind of bedding to keep it warm and then contact a carer for help. Speed is essential to give them a chance of surviving. Finf Hedgehog Haven on facebook.

Big Boost to Ellie 4 Africa’s Fundraising Appeal

Ellie Glasgow (aged 15) has been working hard over the summer to raise the £4,641 costs of going on a charity expedition to Kenya to work as a volunteer with fellow Sheringham High School students in 2018.

A successful JustGiving campaign, her pop-up café, a couple of car boots and a sponsored abseil (undertaken by her Great Auntie Margaret for her 70th birthday!) have brought the total raised so far to £3,381.

Brian Lewis ‘Fish no chips’

Ellie extends an open invitation, to anyone interested in contemporary art or looking for a special Christmas gift, to please go along to her Art Auction on Sunday 19 November, 6pm at The Belfry Centre, Overstrand; where they can bid for the 35 donated artworks - prints, original paintings and 3D pieces - by some of Norfolk’s finest artists.

The evening offers the opportunity to meet and mingle with many of these artists. There will be wine and soft drinks for sale and complimentary nibbles and sweet treats prepared by Ellie, her mum and her grandmother.

“I want this to be a relaxed event so it will be a silent auction where people write their bids on a piece of paper. Only the winning bid is announced and this way, people can bid whatever they can afford without feeling uncomfortable! If you can’t make it on the night, you can also submit online bids at CoastArts.co.uk who are kindly sponsoring my campaign.”

“Everyone has been so generous and, with their help and support, I’m almost three-quarters of the way there. I’m determined to reach my target and hope that my next two events in November will edge me that little bit closer. Anyone can come to either or both! It would be great to have good turn-outs, especially as so many people are donating their time, expertise, raffle prizes, refreshments and artworks to help me achieve my goal.”

The following weekend, on Friday 24 November, 7pm in Cromer Community Centre, Ellie is organising a Chicago Dance Evening with Tina Allison, Overstrand’s best-kept secret, and its very own Jazz Dance Aficionado, who teaches dance in a fun and accessible way.

“I can’t wait for the Chicago night. I hope that people of all ages will come along, dressed up (as sparkly and glitzy as possible) to learn a

dance routine from the ‘Chicago’ film. The ticket price includes a complimentary cocktail (mocktail for under 18s) and, with Tina as the host, fun and lots of laughter is guaranteed!”

Please book your tickets £8 adult/£4 under 18 in advance at CoastArts.co.uk.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Upper Sheringham Village Hall Appeal

The Village Hall at Upper Sheringham has been a feature of the village for over 90 years and is still going strong. It is very popular for children's and adult parties, anniversaries, wedding receptions, car boot sales, quizzes, classes etc. Hall hire rate is very reasonable and this, together with good kitchen facilities plus car parking, ensures a continuous income which ensures the hall can be maintained.

This all takes some work and organisation and necessitates a village hall committee . The majority of the existing committee have been serving

Facial Rejuvenation Experts - Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

There is no shortage of practitioners from a variety of backgrounds offering Dermal fillers and Botox injections. The trouble is that a majority of these practitioners do not understand how the face ages and/ or have a limited number of treatments to offer. Any specialist mechanic needs a properly resourced toolbox not just one or two tools. Same thing with facial rejuvenation. If your practitioner only has one or two tools, that is all they can offer you, whether or not it is best for you.

Someone with 30 years experience in general practice or nursing maybe an expert in asthma management or vaccination but it does not make them an expert in facial rejuvenation- although they may make such claims. So do check that your practitioner has experience in procedures they are offering you.

Concepts of beauty also change over time. So we need a balanced approach rather than too much of the wrong thing!

Let me give you some examples. In the 1970s when we did not have the modern treatments and technology all we had was facelift surgeries. Surgeons devised extensive invasive techniques in order to produce the tightest and longest lasting results that they could. We all know the consequences, the results were too tight 'Wind Tunnel' look faces but they were not necessarily young or pleasing to look at.

Now such surgeries have fallen out of favour and we are in an era of over filling. What I call 'pillow faces'. Sadly it is not only the patients, but I see practitioners with such appearances. Looking filled has almost become the norm!

When Botox first came out it was the norm to see frozen expressionless faces. Patients themselves are now moving away from too much Botox and requesting less of the stuff so they still have moment but look softer and well rested.

So what is our approach of facial rejuvenation at the Coltishall Clinic? Our approach is to produce natural looking, pleasing and harmonious results. We recommend that you bring your old photo that you like to your consultation. We can see how your face has changed and try and reverse these changes.

What happens with facial ageing and how we can help?

1. Loss of skin quality, sun exposure and smoking related changes. Solution- skincare and skin rejuvenation treatments. You need a machine or laser that is suitable for your unique concerns. We are one of the very few clinics in the country who have invested in the full range of specialised dermatological lasers. Some practitioners claim their laser can do everything but that simply is not true. Often a combinations of

2. Hyper dynamic wrinkles or in simpler terms wrinkles caused by over use or overactivity of facial expression muscles. 12.00-2.30pm Solution-judicious use of botulinum toxin injections.

Business as usual?

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

Many people assume that if they became incapable of running their business, it would still be ‘business as usual’ and that others would simply step into their shoes and carry on. This is not so. For many small businesses or sole traders, it could be the end of the business.

Whether you are a business owner, director, partner or sole trader, safeguarding the future of your business with a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) makes good business-sense. As a business owner, it is important to consider what might happen to your business if you were incapacitated by illness or injury. Who would take over the running of the business? What would it mean for your employees’ financial future?

Unless you have appointed an attorney, essential business operations may not be possible. Access to your bank accounts may be denied, suppliers won’t get paid, contracts could be lost, insurance premiums won’t be renewed and salaries could go unpaid. Without an attorney appointed to take care of the business, the disruption could be catastrophic. It might not take long for the impact to be felt.

A business or commercial LPA tackles this; however, they are more complicated than an ordinary LPA. For example, it might be necessary to alter the company’s Articles of Association or amend the partnership agreement. They are different to ordinary LPAs that deal

with your personal and financial affairs and represent a vital element in your business continuity planning.

Many partnerships and companies, under the Mental Health Discrimination Act 2012, cannot remove a director/partner if they lose mental capacity.

You will need to identify one or more suitable attorneys. They should be known to you, trustworthy and capable of doing the job, ideally familiar with the business. You will need to talk it through with them so they know the role that they are taking on. They may need to take out their own Personal Liability insurance to make sure that they are protected when acting as an attorney. The attorney will effectively become a director with all the responsibility that follows.

Imagine if you had to leave your business unexpectedly with no one to take over your role. Many small business owners rarely take holidays because they cannot be spared. But, have you thought what would happen if you had no choice in the matter and were absent long-term without warning?

Silence, silence. Heads bowed low. Poppies, poppies. Row on row. Scarlet petals, slender stem. ‘Remember them, remember them’. Toll the bells from coast to coast, Muffle drums and sound the Post. Voluntary Norfolk

As the weather gets colder and the nights darker, many Norfolk residents run the risk of loneliness and isolation, especially if they suffer from a long-term health condition that prevents them getting out and meeting other people. ‘Voluntary Norfolk’ is keen to hear from people who would be able to give some time to make a positive difference to the lives of others.

Voluntary Norfolk’s North Norfolk Health Volunteers scheme, run in partnership with North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), are looking for volunteers to visit people in their own homes, If you could give an hour or so, regularly or even occasionally, to change someone’s life for the better, through sharing your time, experience, good humour and mutual interest, in your village, town or the surrounding area, then please get in touch with us! The most popular activity is a simple coffee and chat, but, depending on what you wanted to offer, some people might like a short walk, a game or craft activity, a quick hand with something in the house or garden or even a short trip out in the car. You could visit someone by yourself, or, if you would rather, you are welcome to enrol with a friend and do your visits together.

‘Volunteers do not replace the care of NHS or Social Services staff, nor the support of family members, ‘says Natalie Hickman one of the volunteer co-ordinators for the scheme, ‘but they bring something very special. They choose to give their time and talents, and that is deeply

appreciated by those they visit’.

Potential volunteers firstly meet with Voluntary Norfolk co-ordinators to discuss their interests, and, following a DBS check, completion of the application and induction process, are then carefully matched with a suitable person to visit. Training and support is available, but volunteers are not expected to deliver any personal or medical care nor incur any costs.

Visiting arrangements can formally last up to 18 months, but many long-term friendships have developed as a result.

Why not get ready and make a start towards doing something different for 2018.

If you could help, or you would like to know more, please call 01263 519454 for North Norfolk service or 0755 170 4246 for South Norfolk service. Alternatively, you can email

chloe.edwards@voluntarynorfolk.org.uk or drop in for a chat with recruitment assistant Chloe, at the office in Merchants’ Place, 16 Church Street, Cromer on Tuesdays or at St Clements House, 2-16 Colegate, Norwich, NR3 1BQ on Wednesdays or Fridays. You can register your interest via their website too.

Sheringham Lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’ B 818 Service Launch – Sunday 22 October

At 10.02hrs, at the request of Humber Coastguard, the Sheringham Lifeboat was launched into moderate to heavy seas to investigate the sighting of a kayak seen to be apparently tied to the wreck buoy about 300 metres off Weybourne beach.

On arriving on scene the crew discovered that the kayak was being used as a ‘sea base’ by a diver who was spear fishing in the vicinity of the wreck.

At the request of HMCG the Lifeboat Crew suggested to the diver that he ought not to be at sea in these testing conditions. The diver declined any assistance or to go ashore. HMCG then requested the Lifeboat stay alongside and in the vicinity until the diver decided to return to shore. Eventually the diver decided to return to the beach and was escorted safely ashore by the Lifeboat.

Debbie said “She looks just like Dorothy and she is a superb performer so she is just perfect for the role.”

Hana, from Essex, inherited her love of drama from mum Nadia who was involved with local ‘am dram’ groups as a serious actress.

Hana went on to play Maid Marion in a Year Six school show, which also helped her gain confidence after suffering bullying, she explained.

She has qualified from the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London and has played lead roles in musicals set in the 1940s

Kelling Probus Club

Kelling Probus Club met on 19 October at the Dales Hotel in Upper Sheringham. Members enjoyed a fine lunch, after which they were entertained by an amusing quiz devised by Tony O’Shea, with questions significantly biased to challenge the longer term memory of the gathering. Probus is a club with a membership of retired professional and businessmen. Those interested in finding out more about the Club are invited to contact John Whittington john.whitto62@gmail.com. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Last month I mentioned the several older kittens waiting for new families to come and claim them. I am happy to report that Bassett has now been gone to his new home, together with Rebec, a lovely little tabby girl. Theo and May have also been reserved and there are also people interested in the others so we hope they too will be leaving soon.

When looking to give a home to a new cat or kitten we see that many people have preconceived ideas about the colour of the cat they are looking for. Some are looking to replace a previous companion with one which looks the same, while others would rather go for something completely different. Looking after the cats in care, generally speaking, we believe colour is not important, but the character and temperament of the cat or kitten are. Sometimes preference for the sex of the cat may need to be considered depending on whether there are other cats already in the home or the person concerned has always loved either males or females.

When we put the kittens on the website we had numerous enquiries for Bassett, just because he was grey and white and a handsome lad. He was a very lucky kitten as, when he was found, he was not a well boy, and seeing him recover and develop his naughty little ways gave us pleasure, but the people seeing the photo would not have known this. Other kittens, equally delightful to care for, have been overlooked, although they are just as lovely in their individual ways. We have, however, recently re-homed Dwight’s two black littermates, Esmeralda and George, who were both chosen because, when their new families came to see the kittens, these two made sure they would not be overlooked. When coming to see the cats and kittens please come with an open mind as often they will choose you.

When we re-homed Mylee, the little mummy cat, I mentioned that she needed dental treatment to relieve the problems with her gums caused by the calici virus before she joined us. Unfortunately, the problem returned and she has now had all her teeth removed. She is due to go back to see David (her vet) and he is confident that she should now make a good recovery. Although it seems a drastic action to take, it is the best option for her. Since joining our household we have seen her character develop and now have a very loving and playful cat (she does enjoy playing with ping pong balls - the Bobby Charlton of the cat world).

If you are interested in receiving Alfie, a lovely slightly older cat, help to neuter your cat/kitten, very affectionate and loving please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

We are delighted what there was such a huge response to the COAST Arts 2017 Mixed Media Art Show and Competition.

Artists really took it to their hearts and 61 entries hang for you to see in The Art House Café (one of our treasured independent local businesses which ass to North Norfolk’s unique identity).

We were also delighted to have the backing of two major supporters of the arts with the prizes this year – Cowling & Wilcox and Phaidon, Every entry received two discount vouchers each and that free frame.

The prize for the winner was materials worth over £50 from Cowling & Wilcox and for the People’s Choice : Art and Place, a book from Phaidon worth over £50.

We would also like to thank our judge Brian Lewis – you will see as you go round that it has been a difficult job.

1st prize Dolores Grace – Red Sails in the Sunset 2nd prize Dot Cobley – Small World 3rd prize CFR Bayer – Ghosts from the Past – The Birth of Poppyland

Folically Challenged Hair is something we endure It grows no matter what, And then we have to waste our time Having cut off what we've got. It grows in most unusual shapes Some straight, some bent, some curly, Women straighten out the curls Men don't – it makes them girly. Why do men have facial hair It needs shaving every day, Razor blades and shaving foam What a price we have to pay. Some men grow a little 'tash Underneath their nose, It tickles and can strain thick soup That's how the thinking goes. Of course, my hair has long since gone It is a source of sorrow, Maybe it’s what is meant by saying 'Hair today- and gone tomorrow' Paul Scrivener

Holt and District Probus Club members and their friends visited Bletchley Park on 11 October. By kind permission of the North Norfolk Railway the Sanders coach met them at Holt Railway Station and the journey to Bletchley took about three hours.

The ‘star’ of the show in the museum rooms is the rebuilt ‘Bombe’ - the name given to the huge machine that Alan Turing and others built to work out the starting point of the coded messages that then had undergo the deciphering. A group of volunteer enthusiasts built the replica Bombe – and it does actually work! It is an amazing thing to see – the front has three ranks of 36 drums, each rank on three rows, which rotate at a great speed.

The back is no less astonishing, with control rods and gears for the rotating drums (with a built-in lubricating system) and hinged to this is a mass of cables.

An entertaining volunteer led the group on a guided tour of the site – originally some 55 acres – pointing out the places where the likes of Alan Turing lived and worked.

Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the first Thursday of each month at the Feathers in Holt.

Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782.

Rescued pony Oakley, who was so weak he collapsed upon arrival at Redwings Horse Sanctuary, has made a miraculous recovery to become the latest resident to benefit from the charity’s rehoming programme.

Seven-year-old 13hh Cob cross Oakley was given a very warm welcome when he arrived at his new loving home with Guardian Laura Elsegood, and new best friend and rider Leo this autumn.

The sight of the happy and healthy pony walking down the ramp of his horsebox into his new home is a stark contrast to that of the emaciated weanling Redwings’ team first led into the ambulance following his rescue in 2011.

Oakley’s owner had contacted the charity asking for urgent help after struggling to treat his pony’s severe worm infestation. Oakley was incredibly weak and unable to support his own body weight; he needed to be manually lifted by Redwings’ vet team day and night to prevent his skin forming nasty sores.

Despite deep concerns that he wouldn’t pull through, determined Oakley gained 11st within six months and has since gone on to spend many happy years living at Redwings’ Aylsham Visitor Centre, north of Norwich, where his friendly nature and loveable character made him stand out as an excellent candidate for the rehoming programme.

Rachel Angell, Redwings’ Operations Manager who heads up the charity’s rehoming programme, said “I remember the day Oakley arrived; we were in tears at the sight of him. His chances of pulling through were very slim but he amazed us all with his sheer determination to survive. Thinking back to how he was then and seeing him now in his new home makes me feel so proud.”

Oakley is among almost 500 Redwings horses living in Guardian homes with many going on to successfully enjoy all kinds of disciplines from showing to cross country. Oakley has been rehomed as the perfect first-pony for his new young rider Leo, aged 11.

Leo’s mum Laura said “A friend of mine rehomed Redwings Thyme and she is an amazing little pony that Leo learnt to ride on, so we kept an eye on the Redwings website to rehome a pony ourselves. When I saw Oakley I knew he would be the ideal first pony for Leo and friend for my ex-racehorse Star. Oakley has been settling in well and is building a loving friendship with Leo, it’s so lovely to watch! We have even taken Oakley on a charity ride where we all had a lovely time!”

North Norfolk Photographic Society

Judy and David Hodgson came to Holt from Wisbech to show their ‘Winter Wonderland’ photographs to North Norfolk Photographic Society on 18 October.

For the first half of the meeting they showed their photos taken in winter throughout the UK. David showed some ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of the same shot, discussing how they had used Photoshop and other applications to edit them with just a few clicks. Also changing some from colour to monochrome and showing how cropping could change the whole aspect and look of a photo.

After the tea break, they showed their photos taken during a trip to America in early winter some years previously, including their visit to the famous Yellowstone National Park, which is on an active volcano – potentially a huge volcano. The highlights were photos of the famous ‘Old Faithful’, a geyser which shoots up to over 200 feet every 92 minutes or thereabouts. You can watch ‘Old Faithful’ on live webcam at www.nps.gov/features/yell/webcam/oldfaithfulstreaming.html

There are some 300 active geysers in the region. The trip was not without adventure - some of the access gates are closed in winter and Judy and Dave were at one point caught out by a serious change in the weather and counted themselves very lucky to be able to follow a ranger’s truck’s rear lights through the thick fog that came down.

Robin Johnson thanked Judy and Dave for their talk and for showing their superb pictures. Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at Holt Community Centre. Your local charity for older people was pleased to welcome around 75 people from the community at our recent tea dance This included the children from Woodfield School, customers of the Day Services and members of the wider public.

It was inspirational to see older and younger people mixing and dancing to music provided by local singer Gordon James. In fact, everybody enjoyed themselves so much that many asked if it could be a regular occurrence.

This fantastic event was provided through our intergenerational project, which aims to develop stronger links between different generations within our community by building partnerships with local schools. Our Intergenerational activities have included arts & crafts, bingo, cookery, games and reminiscence giving opportunities for social interaction whilst providing physical and mental stimulation.

As well as thanking the children of Woodfield School and Gordon James, we are also grateful to Tesco for providing a raffle prize. Age Concern North Norfolk can provide a wide range of services for older people including a Lunch Club, Day Centre and Befriending Services and further information can be obtained by calling at 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham or calling 01263 821188.

The National Trust marks 30 years since the Great Storm • The highest wind gusts of 122 mph were recorded in Norfolk

were lost. Stephen knows of course.

As well as clearing up the fallen trees, re-seeding areas of grass, re-planting low lying vegetation and spring bulbs, the team went about re-planting the trees in the same positions that they had fallen, using the opportunity to fill in gaps where other trees had been lost over the years.

• Blickling was directly in the path of the storm

• A staggering 265 trees were lost on the Blickling Estate in just one night.

• It took two years to recover and replant 365 trees, one for every day of the year.

In total 365 trees were planted, one for each day of the year.

• Today the conservation charity continues to care for Blickling’s woodland.

In the early hours of the morning on 16 October 1987, hurricane force winds devastated homes, woods and gardens in its path. The worst storm to hit the UK in 300 years, the highest wind gusts of 122mph were recorded at Gorleston in Norfolk.

For the National Trust at Blickling Estate, it meant the loss of hundreds of trees. Gardeners who witnessed the devastation first-hand found it hard to bear, as they awoke to a scene of devastation on an unprecedented scale.

A rude awakening For Stephen Hagon, who is now Assistant Head Gardener on the Blickling Estate, it would be a morning he would never forget. “That morning I was woken by a phone call from the Head Gardener, rather than the sounds of my alarm clock. I’d remarkably slept through the storm that had battered on outside and mine was one of 250,000 homes in the region without power that morning. As you can imagine, I got up and looked outside and couldn’t quite believe my eyes, as a piece of corrugated iron from next doors shed flew past the window!”

Scene of devastation Stephen, who has been a gardener at Blickling for 45 years, didn’t make it into Blickling until lunchtime that day and the scene that faced him was heart breaking.

The then Home Secretary, Douglas Hurd, called it the "worst, most widespread night of disaster” since the Blitz. Whilst most of England and Wales experienced wet and windy weather that night, it was southern and eastern parts of England that were the worst hit. In total a staggering 265 trees were brought down on the Blickling Estate.

Stephen’s is a tale of loss “As we walked around the estate, it didn’t take long to grasp the scale of the damage and scene of devastation. It was heart breaking, for many of the old boys, they were almost in tears to see the woodland they’d cared for now destroyed.”

In total an estimated 15 million trees were lost around the country, with 600,000 cubic metres of woodland wiped out in Norfolk and Suffolk. And six of the seven oak trees after which the town of Sevenoaks in Kent is named, were blown down.

The hard work then began A team of eight National Trust gardeners and contractors then had the difficult task of clearing up the damage. As they headed into winter and with heavy machinery to move the trees, it was a cold and muddy job that took two years to complete. With large areas closed off to visitors and a skeleton team of two left to maintain the herbaceous borders it was a challenging time. Today, you can walk along the avenues of trees that now stand 50 feet tall and you’d be none the wiser that they were planted to replace the trees that

Nature remains a priority for the conservation charity and the National Trust continues to care for landscapes and manage them for people to enjoy too. Thirty years on, the determination of people and nature to not only survive but adapt and thrive after the storm endures.

North Norfolk Astronomy Society News

The North Norfolk Astronomy Society (NNAS) is a friendly local group based at Wiveton. We have two upcoming events we hope readers will find interesting

Two sites in North Norfolk (Kelling Heath Holiday Park and Wiveton Downs) have recently been designated Dark Sky Discovery Sites. These sites are selected on the basis of their lack of light pollution, and therefore the skies have breathtaking views of the stars and the Milky Way.

To celebrate this event, readers are invited to Star Party at Wiveton Downs. Members of the NNAS will be on hand to guide visitors around the night sky, and there will be telescopes set up, with expert NNAS members on hand to point out sights of interest.

This event will be held on 25 November, or if the weather is bad on that night, the event will be held on the following night, 26 November. The event will start at 7pm. If you are interested, please email events@nnas.org for further information and directions to the site.

Another event, Cley Calling, will take place on 7 December at Cley Marshes Visitor Centre. This is a Norfolk Wildlife Trust event to celebrate the Winter Sky Festival. Dinner will be provided and the NNAS will be on hand with telescopes and to give talks and answer questions. Booking is essential and will cost £10. For booking and further information, phone Cley visitors Centre on 01263 740008.

St Andrew's Ladies Association At the 10 October meeting we welcomed Mrs Hilary Cox.

This amazing lady accepted a challenge to climb Kilmanjaro, 19,341 feet above sea level and reach the summit in aid of charity.

Hilary had only recently recovered from knee surgery but she set out to train by walking up and down the Norfolk hills, one of which was Beeston Hill (Bump)!

We were amazed at her courage and determination on this eight day trek with difficult terrain and conditions, walking for five hours each day, sleeping in a small tent with minimal facilities.

Luckily the weather conditions were reasonable, the guides very helpful and protective and she coped with the extremes of temperature and altitude sickness.

Most people do not reach the summit, but Hilary made it and was able to see the sun rise - a unique experience to treasure.

We wonder what this incredible lady will do next - she must be so thrilled to have achieved what many are unable to do
