Lions and Tigers aboard RNLI Sheringham Lifeboat
Continued from front cover... However, it is not only their skills and achievements that impress, it is their humility, honesty and integrity; the way they carry themselves, deal with life’s challenges and treat others. Tom and Ben are tremendous role models and we want to recognise that.”
“2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Sheringham RNLI. We are an incredibly proud community and have been celebrating our heritage, and those who have gone before us. Never before has anyone been offered Honorary Membership of the Sheringham Lifeboat Crew; we are delighted both Tom and Ben have accepted.”
The RNLI exists to save lives from drowning. Not only are the Sheringham crew, and station on alert 24/7/365 to launch the lifeboat but in the last year through visits we have educated over one thousand young people on how to stay safe by the sea and in the water.
The Autumn is a busy time for the Youngs boys. Tom is Captain of Leicester Tigers leading them in the RFU Premiership and European competitions and Ben, in addition to these, is in the England squad for the Autumn internationals. We wish them well.
North Norfolk Photographic Society beats them all!
The annual competition for the Pat Goode Memorial Trophy was held at Wisbech.
North Norfolk Photographic Society competed with nine other clubs and as ever, the standard of work in the Fens was very high but NNPS took first place, two points ahead of the joint second placed clubs, March and Wisbech.
When a Poor Man came in Sight Chairman of NNPS, by Howard Denner Malcolm English, congratulated all members who had work selected as part of the Club's entry - in particular member Howard Denner, whose image ‘When a Poor Man came in Sight’ scored 20 points and was judged the best projected digital image in the competition.

About with Friends bags £2000 from carrier bag charge fund
About with Friends is delighted to announce it has bagged £2000 from a Tesco funding scheme.
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help funding initiative, which sees grants raised from carrier bag sales being awarded to thousands of local community projects every year.
Millions of shoppers voted in stores up and down the country. And it can now be revealed About with Friends has been awarded £2000. Work will now begin on bringing the project to life.
About with Friends is a Cromer based charity supporting people with learning disabilities in Norfolk to make friends, enjoy a social life, learn skills for work and independence and be part of the community.
Some of our members are part of our Events & Media team which organises activities, attends community events and give talks and presentations to promote the work of the charity.
Being part of the Events & Media team enables members to learn new skills, play an active role in the community and boosts confidence. Members are trained in presentation skills, setting up equipment, using cameras and videos.
The funding from Tesco Bags of Help will enable us to provide additional training and new equipment, as well as staff support to attend more events.
Jamie Moses, Head of Workskills Operations, said “About with Friends would like to thank everyone who voted for the project at Tesco stores in Sheringham and Mundesley. New members had recently joined the Events & Media team and were already involved in planning a presentation and putting together a newsletter, the funds will enable us to provide IT equipment to support this”.
Alec Brown, Tesco’s Head of Community, said “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success. We’ve been overwhelmed by the response from our customers. The great thing about Bags of Help is that local people are
invited to decide how the money will be spent in their community. We can’t wait to see the projects come to life.”
Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Emily and Tony on a work placement at Tesco, Sheringham, with Sue Lowe (centre) the store’s Community Champion in front of the ‘Bags of Help’ voting stand
Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp
Voting ran in stores throughout July and August with customers choosing which local project they would like to get the top award using a token given to them at the checkout.
Since launching in 2015, Bags of Help has awarded more than £36 million across more than 7,900 local projects.
Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups each time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.
Bags of Help criteria have recently been extended to include any project that benefits the community. Previously the scheme funded outdoor projects only.
Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said “Bags of Help continues to fund thousands of projects across the

UK. We want to ensure that the money raised benefits as many local people in as many different places as possible so we’ve extended the range of groups and projects that we can support. The scale and variety of activities supported by Bags of Helps shows what can be achieved when communities are given the support and the encouragement they need to make change happen in their local area.”

North Norfolk - a better place to go swimming…
North Norfolk District Council celebrates the ‘excellent’ bathing water classification The water quality at all six Blue Flag award winning beaches in North Norfolk have been confirmed as Excellent in the 2017 Bathing Water Classifications by Government. Bathing water at Sheringham, West Runton, East Runton, Cromer, Mundesley, and Sea Palling has been classified as ‘Excellent’ by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Water is tested at our beaches every week over the summer months and each year DEFRA publishes the results, which rate bathing water as either: Excellent, Good, Sufficient or Poor; in 2017 all six of the blue flag beaches have been recognised as having excellent bathing water. Nationally 270 locations (65.4% of those measured) have been classed as excellent in 2017. Cllr Maggie Prior, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure said “It’s absolutely wonderful that the quality of our beaches has been recognised in this national bathing water classification. We all know that north Norfolk is a great holiday and resort destination and this latest rating goes to prove that people who come here know a good thing when they see it.” This water quality classification will be a key factor in the award of Blue Flags for next year. The news has been welcomed by councillors along the coast.
Ward Member for Sea Palling Cllr Richard Price said “I am not surprised that our wonderful Blue Flag Beach has been assessed as having excellent clean water, that’s just one of the reasons why people come back year after year.” Cllr Hilary Cox, Ward Member for Cromer Town said “This is a wonderful achievement proving that the seas off our resorts are the best. It’s important not only for residents and visitors but for our local fishing industry too.” Cllr Nigel Pearce, Ward Member for Suffield Park added “This accolade for our bathing water is not only great news for tourists but for everyone in North Norfolk. Not only is North Norfolk the best but our bathing water is too!” Cllr John Lee, Ward Member for Suffield Park said “I'd like to thank everybody from Anglian Water to all those people who give their time to keep our beaches clean for ensuring our beaches and bathing water keep winning these accolades.” Cllr Judy Oliver, Ward Member for Sheringham South said “The quality of the beaches in Sheringham and at our other Blue Flag resorts is second to none. We are very proud of this, and very grateful to all those who work so hard to help us maintain our Blue Flag status. We now have it confirmed that the quality of our seawater is also excellent, making our beaches great places for visitors and residents to enjoy for recreation and exercise.” Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Ward Member for The Runtons said “I was delighted earlier this year when both the beaches in the Runtons were presented with their Blue Flags. This announcement just reinforces the message that our beaches are amongst the best in the country. Something we as locals already know.”

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Hedgehog Haven
This is Foster. She has a broken back leg and her only hope is to have it amputated and eventually live in an enclosed area.
At the moment she doesn't weigh enough to cope with an operation so she is on painkillers and vitamin B12 injections to encourage her to eat more. Hedgehogs can manage with three legs but it is not advisable to release them back into the wild as they can develop problems with mites on their side which they can no longer scratch.

Cromer Christmas Show
It’s that time of the year again when Cromer Pier and the Pavilion Theatre put up the Christmas decorations, start serving the mince pies, mulled wine and one of Norfolk’s favourite performers Olly Day takes to the stage to welcome audiences to the ‘must see’ Cromer Christmas Show.
Christmas music and songs, hitting just the right note for the festive season. The five star reviews on Trip Advisor for last year’s show, saw loyal patrons and new patrons alike, complimenting the show on its production values, the performers and costumes. The Christmas-themed family show, offers ticket prices starting from as little as £10 and great value family tickets at £46 making the show one of the best value-for-money Christmas Shows in Norfolk.
This year sees the welcome return of headline comedian Olly Day, a true Norfolk comedic legend and firm favourite with audiences at the Pavilion Theatre. His cheeky chappy humour and sparkling charm are all part of the Cromer Christmas magic. The Cromer Pier Christmas Show, now in its 13th year, has ever-increasing fan bases that make the trip each year to see what is fast becoming one of the main Christmas Shows in the UK. This year’s shows are already in great demand with show bookings well in advance of last year.
The Cromer Christmas Show is a traditional variety show but with a magical Christmas twist, where audiences can expect to be entertained with cheeky comedy sketches, big dance numbers full of sequins and sparkle, and
to the stage of the Pavilion Theatre since his last performance in the Cromer Pier show in 2003. Vocalist, Emily Yarrow, makes a welcome return for a second Christmas Show after her highly acclaimed performance in the Cromer Pier Show earlier this year and male vocalist Rob McVeigh is also making a welcome return to Cromer.
The hard working and very talented Seaside Special Dancers will as ever provide the extra wow factor with their stunning costumes and almost boundless energy.
Supported by the Cromer Christmas Choir and the talented children from Marlene’s School of Dancing, the Cromer Christmas Show is a cracker of a show rich in variety, family fun and the magic of Christmas. Joining Olly this year is multi-instrumentalist Leo Shavers bringing his own blend of expert musicianship and slick comedy back

The dates have been agreed following consultation with each town council. Posters will be put up in advance in the car parks giving the dates for the individual towns.
On the days themselves, payment machines will be covered to make sure people understand they do not need to pay.

As you know, the profits from all our functions and sales, all go to the Fairtrade charity, Traidcraft Exchange, which helps some of the world's poorest communities with skills to work their way out of poverty.
Since the summer people from Briston to Overstrand, and all places between, have enabled us to send a cheque for ÂŁ313.50 to the charity, which includes the profits from selling the winning postcards, from the children's competition.

Sheringham Town Council’s Youth Trust Fund is now available
Are you an established voluntary organisation, group or association that is working with or providing services for the benefit of Sheringham’s young people (aged 0-18)? Is there equipment you need to improve the service you currently provide or perhaps you would like to initiate?
Sheringham Town Council has a fund of just over ÂŁ6000 in their Youth Trust Fund, which has come as a result of the closure of the Teen and Twenty Youth Club which was held by the Community Centre Trust Fund and administered by the Management Committee of the old Community Centre some years ago.
It is now available to be distributed as grants to promote the benefit of the young residents of Sheringham. Grants can be awarded from ÂŁ500 ÂŁ2000 maximum per organisation with only one application per group permitted per financial year.
Funds will be allocated in early 2018 and the following years until the entire fund has been utilised. The fund will then cease to exist.
Application forms can be requested from The Town Clerk, Sheringham Town Council Offices, Church Street, Sheringham, NR26 8QS on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings or via shercouncil@btconnect.com. Guidelines detailing how applications will need to match the criteria of the Youth Trust Deed are available with the application form and should be considered before submitting an application.
Applications for the Youth Trust Fund will be accepted by the Town Clerk during 1 December 2017 – 31 January 2018, with a review by Sheringham Town Council of all those received in February. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of March 2018.
Sheringham Town Council very much hope that this fund will be well received in the community and look forward to receiving applications from prospective voluntary groups supporting and enhancing the lives of the youngsters in our town.

9,500 mile fundraising walk Over three years ago, Alex Ellis-Roswell set out from Minnis Bay in Kent to walk round the British and Irish coastlines to pay tribute to his late father and raise money for the RNLI.
He returned to that very spot on Saturday 11 November, where his family, friends, supporters and local lifeboat crew were waiting to greet him.
During his amazing odyssey, 24 year old Alex has been chased by bulls and met Princess Anne. He has slept in church doorways, sheep sheds and bird hides, visited over 200 lifeboat stations – and raised more than £62,000 for the lifesaving charity so far. In the last month, he walked inland along the Thames to visit the four stations that lie along the famous river - Gravesend, Teddington, Chiswick and Tower.
Alex said 'I'm excited to be raising a great sum for the RNLI and its volunteers.'
He started his journey on 3 August 2014 with an aim to raise as much money as possible for the charity.
He left his job, gave notice on his flat and walked out with only what he carried on his back. Since then, he has slept in a tent that he carries with him - or relied on the kindness of strangers. He's often been put up by lifeboat crew or people who have met him along the way.
Sheringham Independent 477
Alex has also amassed a significant following on social media, where his supporters have cheered him on through the emotional ups and downs of his journey.
His route took him clockwise around Britain and Ireland, including the Isle of Man, the Western and Northern Isles. His initial fundraising target was £10,000 - but he has gone a long way past that.
It was after the passing of his father, Sir Raymond Ellis at Christmas in 2013, that Alex set off on the journey of a lifetime. Before ill health, his father had spent much of his life dedicated to charity work and fundraising, which spurred Alex on.
‘My dad’s ultimate stubbornness against what seemed to be a never ending cycle of illness, pain, operations and setbacks will always be a very personal inspiration to me’, said Alex, who has at times suffered with knee pain during his walk.‘I started off thinking about £10,000 then £20,000 then £50,000. I suppose reaching this target shows how well supported the RNLI is by the people, places and communities I’ve walked through, especially when, for many people, money is tight.’
December 2nd 2017
Alex’s target is now £95,000, which represents £10 for every mile he has walked.
Alex remains diplomatic and refuses to name a favourite station. But the crew at Falmouth helped him through a particularly rough patch. ‘The loneliness gets you down sometimes. When I first entered Cornwall, I was in a really low place. There’s a train station in Falmouth, so I decided that I was going to get to Falmouth and quit. 'I walked for 3 or 4 days, pretty much non-stop and at times overnight, to get to Falmouth, because that’s where I was going to quit. And then I got to Falmouth, and the crew there were awesome. They were nice people, and they made me a cup of tea after four days’ walking and it put me back on a high. So it really is the crew that keep me going.’ He added ‘RNLI lifeboat crew volunteers save an average of 23 lives at sea every single day. In my opinion, they are heroes.
‘They put themselves right in the thick of what is Britain’s most unforgiving environment – our sea. They receive no government funding for their work and the majority of lifeboat crew are volunteers.’ His fundraising page is www.bt.com/DonateToLifeboats.

Looking for respite care at Christmas?
If you’re a full-time carer, or spend a lot of time caring for someone, it's important to make time for yourself, too – both for the sake of your own health and wellbeing and to give you the energy to carry on caring. That’s where respite care can help, particularly at times like Christmas. Spending time in a caring and warm environment, with dedicated helpers on hand can be the answer, and a way to give a carer that break. Age UK Norfolk can meet such demands with its 20-bed respite unit at the Grays Fair Court (GFC) centre in Norwich. Each comfortable apartment has en-suite facilities and its own 32 inch television. The path to respite care can be taken in two ways. First, through the social services system via Norfolk County Council, and care packages taken this way will be funded
if the patient meets the necessary criteria. Or there is a self-funding option. Doris Baker, 85, of North Walsham, has been visiting the respite centre at Grays Fair Court in Costessey since it opened in 2008 after being referred by social services. Doris visits the respite centre regularly and spends most Christmas’ with the team at Grays Fair Court. “I just love it; I would be on my own at

family members or friends to manage their finances, or to make decisions about their health and welfare, should the time ever come when they cannot do so for themselves.
A major advantage of having a professionally drawn up LPA is that effective protections and guidance can be included in the LPA. Badly-worded guidance, restrictions, conditions etc within a home-made LPA can cause problems when having the LPA registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), even to the extent of making the LPA invalid. Increasingly, I am of the opinion that the intelligent and cautious use of preferences and instructions, in certain situations, not only gets across the personal wishes of the Donor, but provides clear directions and protections.
The retired Senior Judge in the Court of Protection, Denzil Lush started a lively debate when in the late summer he went on record as saying he would not put in place a LPA for himself. He said he would prefer to go for the full Court of Protection Deputyship appointment. This is where a formal application is made to the specialist Court charged with the managing of the affairs of the mentally incapable. Few practitioners would recommend this route, other than where there are very major issues which would make it better that authority from the Court is obtained for anything other than routine administration. Applying for the granting of such authority costs £400 each time plus all the professional costs incurred. There is a long wait whilst the matter grinds its way through the Court. So how might I restrict and manage the power of my attorneys should I become mentally incapable of managing my own affairs? This is where your specialist
solicitor can provide ‘value added’ service, and usually within their basic fixed-fee cost.
Examples of such preferences and instructions are as follows: I might wish to put a cap on the value of financial transactions (or a series of transactions within a timescale) beyond a particular sum, say £5,000, carried out by a single attorney. Transactions for more than that sum could be stipulated to require all attorneys to authorise it.
You might state that your attorneys should produce accounts annually, to be circulated among them all; and if any concerns are raised then to be audited by a solicitor or an accountant; or, you might require such an audit in any event.
With a LPA for Health and Personal Welfare, you might wish to require all attorneys to be involved with life-sustaining treatment decisions, whilst allowing more routine matters to be decided by a single attorney. Here please do bear in mind that quick decisions often need to be made and having to gather all attorneys (even with modern communication systems) might be slow and so not in your best interests.
The important thing is that your LPA can be created as a bespoke document tailored to suit your special needs and wishes and therefore truly to provide peace of mind.

News from Kelling Model Flying Club
Kelling Model Flying Club was founded in 1977 and is dedicated to the pursuit of flying model aircraft at our superb facilities and is affiliated to the British Model Flying Association. We have about 50 members both social and flying who build and fly a wide variety of models ranging from serene soaring gliders to sporty aerobatic types and elegant scale models. The club has a wealth of experience in its ranks to cater for all levels of ability and includes both instructors and examiners who are more than willing to encourage and assist any prospective modellers in pursuit of the hobby. Whether you are an experienced aero modeller or a raw beginner you will be made most welcome and we would love to meet you.
Our home is the full-size airfield at the Muckleburgh Military Collection in Weybourne, North Norfolk. This fantastic
site has a choice of two grass runways and has stunning views over the beautiful North Norfolk Coastline. The airfield is popular with full-size aircraft pilots too and we sometimes get visits from light aircraft, microlights and the occasional helicopter. Flying rules ensure that a safe and a happy relationship is maintained between the full-size and miniature aviation. Our Club caravan includes wc facilities and provides shelter in changing weathers or just a place to sit and take in the surroundings. We are also very fortunate in having the use of a superb inland flying strip at Binham, owned by a Club member where various flying events are held together with the occasional barbecue.
We are a very friendly and sociable Club and
AN INVITATION FROM
occasionally organise trips and outings to other modelling based events which have always proved popular amongst the members. This year we were pleased to support the Cromer Lifeboat Day where Club members exhibited many of their aircraft and were happy to chat with passers-by.(see photo) Our Club meetings are held at the Morley Club Sheringham, on the second Wednesday of each month from 7:30pm where we enjoy a pint and a natter over all things modelling.
If you have ever considered taking up the hobby or would like to join us, we would love to hear from you. Our Club secretary can be contacted at awjenkins@sky.com or you can apply via our extensive website at www.kellingfliers.co.uk which contains many pictures and articles about the Club and its activities
Do you like a good chat? Do you enjoy meeting people? Would you like a new interest?
If you answered yes to any of these, then why not join our friendly team of volunteers who work to enrich the lives of local older people? If you can spare anything from a couple of days a week to a couple of hours a month and live in the North Norfolk area, we would love to hear from you. No special experience is needed, if you can smile and say hello you can brighten up someone’s day and you will be surprised at how much fun you’ll have doing it. For further details call in at 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham or telephone 01263 821188.

Christmas Social and AGM on 13 December 6.30pm - 10:30pm - NOTE - a Wednesday Evening. Details to follow at Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.
Holkham for Wintering Ducks and Geese on 17th December 10am – 2pm - a morning walk for wintering geese and ducks, with the possibility of interesting raptors, open to

beginners and experienced birders alike, and the option to stay for the afternoon to watch the flights of geese at dusk. We will meet at 0900 in the area of the notice-board, hut and gates at the northern (beach) end of Lady Anne’s Drive (TF 891448). Lady Anne’s Drive is north of the A149 coast road, directly opposite the road leading up to the main gate for Holkham Hall (by the Victoria Inn, postcode NR23 1RG). There is plenty of parking here, for which the charge is £5 for up to 4 hours and £6.50 all day. From here we can either walk east (towards Wells) or, more likely, west towards Burnham Overy. We will use the hides to overlook the grazing marshes, and may also take the opportunity to check the beach and sea. The walking is easy and on the level, though one of the hides requires a climb up steep steps. A telescope is useful if you have one. Children
are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. The walk will be led by Trevor Williams and Andy Clarke.
Felbrigg Park Mid-Week Walk on 20 December 9am – 11am - this walk caters for all levels of ability. We will take a leisurely walk around the Park & Lake, route dependent on the local bird and other wildlife likely to be present on the day. Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather - footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton's Lodge car park, off Lion's Mouth, NR11 8PS at the western end of the estate. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs.

Cley Calling celebrates Norfolk’s starry skies this December
Do you know your mallard from your gadwall? Can you hum ‘Die Fledermaus’ or fancy a spot of frosty storytelling with a glass of mulled wine? Yes, it’s Cley Calling time again, as Norfolk Wildlife Trust celebrates Norfolk’s winter skies with its final wildlife festival of the year.
Cley Calling - Winter Skies runs from Thursday 7 December to Sunday 10 December at NWT Cley Marshes on the north Norfolk coast. The events celebrate Norfolk’s many natural wonders and build on the success of the three previous festivals.
Our knowledgeable staff and volunteers are leading guided walks around the reserve and invite you to take a closer look at Cley’s wintering wildfowl. Saturday’s workshop Sound Recording, in partnership with National Trust, ties in a walk around the reserve with the rare chance to capture the sounds of Cley’s secretive residents such as bearded tits and bitterns, hiding away in the depths of reedbed. NWT is pleased to welcome back North Norfolk Sinfonia after their wonderful performance at Cley Church last summer. On Friday 8 December, the salon orchestra of twelve will be performing Viennese and British light classical music using a variety of string, brass and woodwind instruments, as well as a grand piano. Guests will enjoy a three course dinner and a glass of wine (included in ticket price) as the orchestra performs classics including ‘The Blue Danube’, festive hits such as ‘Sleigh Ride’, and to tie in beautifully with our dark skies theme: ‘Die Fledermaus’, which translates to ‘The Bat’ in English. Keith Hobday, leader and conductor of North Norfolk Sinfonia, said “North Norfolk Sinfonia are really looking forward to joining NWT for this special event. We are delighted to have the opportunity to perform beautiful music in an equally beautiful landscape.” The festival is concluded with a weekend full of family fun. On Saturday families can battle it out to see who can hand-make the most Christmas crafty creations using natural materials. On Sunday 10 December, the festival will come to close with some magical Storytelling by Paul Jackson (pictured), who will be reading a collection of stories to celebrate winter, entitled ‘When it’s so cold that words freeze in the air’. Paul has been storytelling for 24 years and is Chair of The Society for Storytelling, the national body that promotes storytelling. He has visited more than 2,000 schools nationally, impressing his audiences with his brilliant stories interwoven with the melodic tunes of the harp and flute. Wind down in the education centre with a glass of mulled wine or hot squash as Paul enchants us all with his seasonal stories. For more information and to book tickets go to www.cleycalling.com or call the Cley Marshes Visitor Centre on 01263 740008.
Get ready for Christmas with our treatment combinations
Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is fully equipped with 23 state-of-the-art lasers and experience of helping thousands of people.
Dermal fillers have enjoyed tremendous increase in popularity. Unfortunately success has brought lots of untested products as well as untrained or poorly trained operators. Recent studies have shown an alarming rise in side effects with some studies showing as much as 25% complication rates.
Complications that we are particularly worried about are infections, direct injection into an artery which can cause catastrophic effects, Venous compression and more worryingly some cases of chronic pain. Permanent fillers are more of a problem because they do not stay confined but they can spread into the tissue planes, which may make surgery necessary if expression by needle fails.
Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM is medical director and laser surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic clinic and has been injecting safe dermal fillers for over 11 years with outstanding results.
So what are his tips for safe treatments and to minimise risk of complications.
1] Choose your practitioner wisely, what is their background. Do they have a medical qualification? Have they had any training in dermatology or surgery? How many treatments have they done and can they show you their results? This is very important because the person administering these treatments should not only be excellent at treatments, he or she should be able to manage complications should things go wrong. There is no shortage of people from different medical and even non-medical backgrounds offering these treatments. Remember you get what you pay for and cheapest is often not the best!
2] Choose your clinic wisely, do they offer a variety of treatments or do they have only one or two treatments that they can offer. Are they trying to fit you to a treatment rather than offering you most suitable treatment from a range of different available options. Do they provide information on side effects? No medical treatment is risk free. You have to know possible side effects and then make an informed choice.
3] Choose your product wisely. The most important thing is that that a reputable product with a proven safety track record is used and that an experienced cosmetic medical practitioner administers it. Recently there has been a surge of new fillers coming into the market but a lot of these have far less research. The latest treatment is not necessarily the greatest. You don’t want to be a guinea pig for an untested product. Choose that safest product and avoid permanent fillers.
Why treatment combinations? A number of changes happen to us as we age. We have volume loss, muscle over activity, sun damage and loss of elasticity. No single treatment can address all of these issues. Treatment combinations provide the best and natural results. We have invested in top of the range comprehensive technology and have the experience of using it effectively. We have designed these packages for reversing age related changes in one appointment. A kind of mini extreme makeover!

KELLING PROBUS CLUB NOVEMBER MEETING
Kelling Probus Club held its Lunch Meeting on 16 November at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham
Christmas Hamper
Twenty four members attended and after a very tasty lunch, they settled down to hear a very thought provoking talk by Colin of Able Community Care from Norwich.
The company provided domestic, personal, and social care in the area. Colin started by outlining the provision of care throughout the centuries. He told us that the original care was only provided by religious orders and groups which in Medieval times introduced hospitals for the first time.
However, when Henry V111 dissolved the monasteries and banned the gathering of Catholic faith, there was little care at all.
Elizabeth I soon realised the problem and introduced the Poor Law, which saw the introduction of help for the destitute.
By the 1700s, Norwich had a mental hospital and Bethel Hospital, and during the next century we saw St Andrews Hospital built and the Poor Law amended to provide workhouses for over half a million poor people. Mental Health was recognised and during the First World War disabilities became more important.
3 lb Gammon Joint 5 lb Turkey Breast 3 lb Topside Beef Joint 1 lb Pork Chipolatas 1 lb Streaky Bacon 1 lb Pork Sausagement 1 Jar of Cranberry Sauce
all for just £59.95

JOB VACANCY
In the pre 1939 era, family care became much more important.
We are looking for an additional person to join our expanding company.
Colin ended his talk by warning us all that care provision should be part of our life and financial plan, and should not be ignored.
To install Window Blinds & Curtains. This job is Full Time of at least 37.5 hours per week. Good practical skills required. Driving licence is essential. Possible use of company vehicle. Good rate of pay for suitable person. Full Enhanced DBS check will be needed, as some of the work is in school settings. You can apply by sending your CV to us by Email - sales@sunlinecurtainsandblinds.co.uk or post to Sunline Curtains and Blinds Ltd, 31 Church Street, Sheringham NR26 8QS Phone 01263 825274 for more information
In 1948 The Welfare Act and subsequent acts, made care a national effort. As time went on then care became less affordable for the State, and the introduction of patients paying towards care became essential. Care today can be covered by the ‘three m’s’ – Mobility, Mental Health and Medical - and provision for it in old age is essential.
After several questions, Colin was thanked by Andrew Hyatt for his talk. We meet every month on the third Thursday for lunch and a talk. Interested? Call John Whittington on 01263 820333

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
On 7 November, after an excellent lunch, Cromer and Sheringham Probus club was treated to a very interesting talk, entitled ‘Museum Experiences’, by Lisa Little, who recently became the Museum & Collections Manager of the Sheringham Museum.
On 9 January our speaker will be Mr Alex Bennett on the subject “Jewish Humour through the Ages”. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. With a background in textile and costume conservation and as a social historian, she gave us an illustrated talk on some of the many interesting experiences and tasks of her career. Her first job, after years of study, was at Strangers’ Hall in Norwich (an old Elizabethan building), where she made accurate replica costumes for displays, SHERINGHAM WOODFIELDS SCHOOL interpreters and re-enactors. One task was to produce costumes for 100 people (mainly 01263 820520 children) with a budget of just £300! From Strangers’ Hall Lisa moved on to work for the Midday Supervisory Assistant Vacancy Norfolk Museums Service, where she ran events and study sessions. A Merry and Safe Christmas from Toll Barn Vets Heath Road, North Walsham, NR28 0JB. Tel 01692 407126
Christmas is fun for all the family including our pets! However, Christmas is a busy time for our 24/7 on site emergency service with hidden festive dangers …
Christmas Cake, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. Delicious for us but in pets these can cause kidney damage. They can also contain alcohol causing signs of intoxication, low blood sugar, blood pressure and temperature. Onions and Garlic can also cause vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia). Mum’s sage and onion stuffing might taste great but it’s best to avoid giving pets “left overs”.
Chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels). Depending on the amount and type of chocolate eaten, signs range from vomiting and
diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias). It is helpful to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate was eaten to help determine whether a toxic dose has been reached.
Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell and often hunt out Bones, Foil or String from bins. Bones are often brittle and splinter easily causing blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine, whilst foil and string cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine. Many foods also contain high levels of fat increasing the risk of pancreatitis.
Around the house Tinsel and Ornaments are particularly attractive. If eaten these often cause blockages within the intestines. Candles and Fairy Lights are appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns if chewed so place them out of reach of naughty paws! Christmas trees are also potentially toxic as pine needles cause irritation of the mouth, vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness. Naughty puppies and kittens can also injure themselves

climbing Christmas trees so it is advisable to have a barrier to prevent access and keen supervision!
Lilies from festive bouquets can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat comes into contact with lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t-shirt to prevent them licking and contact your vet. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression. Mistletoe can also cause collapse and changes in heart rate whilst Poinsettia sap causes blistering of the mouth and stomach. We recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets!
These problems are treatable if caught early enough so if you have concerns our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Christmas and New Year on our normal number (01692 407126). Wishing you a safe and Merry Christmas from everyone at Toll Barn Vets!

Cromer’s New Year’s Day Firework Display All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier at 5pm on 1 January 2018 for the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display. Organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day – but urge them not to leave it until the last minute. “We’re delighted it’s become such a successful annual event, and with plenty of good vantage points to watch the display, come early, we don’t want anyone to miss it,” says Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond.
“The idea has always been to bring people up to the coast for a breath of fresh air, something to eat and drink, and a fabulous firework display over the sea fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm. "Following on from last year’s postponed event (which went ahead one week later) due to adverse weather conditions, we are looking forward to another impressive display.
“We are fortunate to have Titanium Fireworks back again. Titanium put on the fantastic London New Year’s Eve display. This year they are looking to make more use of the seaside location, including waterborne pyrotechnics”. The annual display attracts over 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day.
Director of Titanium Fireworks, Simon Page, said “We are incredibly proud to be firing the Cromer New Year's day firework display from Cromer Pier, and will be making full use of this unique setting. We believe our experience on the London Eye, The Forth Road Bridge, Blackpool Pier and a host of stadia roofs will help us to make this display even better by using our digital firing system which allows split second firing from multiple locations. Some of the 150 displays we fire each year are work but others unbridle our creativity and we relish the challenges and opportunities of firing from an iconic structure like Cromer Pier." Prior to the fireworks there will be a fun run along Cromer Promenade at 3pm organized by North Norfolk Beach Runners.
The one mile fun run is the perfect opportunity to work off those New Year’s Eve excesses with a gentle jog or a five minute dash if you’re up to it! Starting from the pier forecourt, the run is open to all ages and abilities, with categories for under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors, and even Fancy Dress. Registration will take place from 2.30pm for a fee of £1.
Illuminated merchandise available to buy during the afternoon outside Cromer Museum (next to the Church). Mulled wine will again be served outside the museum, with tea, coffee, and hot soup available in the church.
Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will also be open and other vendors are planning to ensure the crowds who descend on Cromer won’t go hungry. The event is free, however there will be bucket collectors out in force on the day to fundraise for the 2019 display.
The bucket collection at the 2017 display raised a fantastic £9,000, despite the postponement . Half of this was given out in grants to local good causes and the balance has been used towards funding the 2018 display.
HEADS AHEAD Ladies & Gents Hair Designers
20 Beech Avenue, Sunway Park Sheringham NR26 8NS
“Everyone’s aware that budgets are still tight, but we do ask people give as generously as they can”, said Jim Bond. “Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display.”
Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early as possible on New Year’s Day. All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £2 per car for all day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal car park fees will apply on all other car parks. There will be no parking available on Cromer Promenade on New Year’s Day. It is hoped that details of other parking facilities will be issued nearer the time, including the local press. Alternatively, why not leave the car at home or park at an Paving & outlaying station and catch the train.

Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community and I laugh so much. I don't want to go home again."
It has been an exciting time for SDFC with the award of an Awards for All grant of just under £9000.
Carers attending have been so relieved to find support in what can be very trying circumstances and a moment of peace and calm while their loved one is happy and occupied. As a dementia friendly community, we want as many people as possible to have the support they need when living with dementia so please help us to spread the word about this group.
This means the community's newly established Mindercise group is secure for a year. Numbers are steadily growing with members enjoying both the exercise and social side of the group.
Carers are being supported by Brian Canning, our local Alzheimer's support worker and also the new Admiral Nurse for North Norfolk is shortly coming on board. The group meets on a Wednesday at the Lighthouse at 12.30pm and some members stay on for lunch at the Lighthouse Community Cafe.
Sheila who is living with dementia and attends the group said "it is such a happy day when I come to the group. It is wonderful to move and take part in something with other people
Also as a result of the grant funding we will be launching our new Down Memory Lane singing group at the Christmas Tree Festival with a dementia friendly sing along on 11 December at 11.30am. This will be followed by a session of well known songs and music. Again lunches and cake are also available in the Church which is always a good excuse for a trip out!
All-rounder Ben, who is part of the Norfolk Cricket Board’s Emerging Players Programme (EPP), led by former first-class cricketer and Gresham’s Cricket Coach, Chris Brown, has already featured in Norfolk’s U14 and U15 teams.
Ben, who was knocked for six when he received his contract said: “I was really surprised and I am so excited!” Ben began playing cricket when he was seven and looks to Yorkshire and England’s Jonny Bairstow for on pitch inspiration.
Chris Brown, who has coached Ben through Norfolk’s EPP, has provided an unrivalled link

Don't forget we have Dementia Champions, who can run business training or dementia friends sessions for your community group or business. These are free sessions and have been found to be very beneficial recently by Splash, Miramar vets, Randells Healthcare and several smaller businesses in the town. Look out for Dementia Aware stickers in local business windows. We have over 60 businesses signed up to becoming dementia friendly. Help us to keep spreading the word.

Chris said “Ben had developed through our age groups and EPP and with the strong link now established at Nottinghamshire CCC; he is amongst four Norfolk EPP players connected with their Academy and STAG programmes”. With Chris being Director of Cricket at Gresham’s, this gives the Nottinghamshire STAG programme more contact and access to Ben during school times for him to work on his skills during the winter months.
