Dementia Accessible Buses a reality as Sanders focus on drivers and dementia awareness
Sheringham, as a dementia friendly community, gets a step closer Sheringham Dementia Friendly community have jumped into 2018 with a number of exciting projects driving ahead.
The ability to live well with dementia is often dependent on an individual’s access to public transport. As members of Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community, Sanders Coaches were well aware of this and approached the group to see if dementia awareness sessions could be arranged for all of their drivers. Realising the importance of being dementia friendly and accessible, and in the process of redeveloping their CPC training modules, Sanders have built in dementia modules into their package. SDFC have been delighted to work in supporting the development of these sessions and in also delivering them over five weekends in January and February.
Richard Pengelly of Sanders said this initiative came about as part of a focus on improving all customer service and to help customer facing staff appreciate how to take account of the individual needs of passengers.

Dementia Accessible Buses a reality as Sanders focus on drivers and dementia awareness Continued from front cover...
Kevin Reynolds, Sanders Training Manager, reported that he felt this partnership with SDFC is a fantastic opportunity to meet the needs of the local community whilst developing good customer service across all of our team of drivers. After the session drivers reported that much seems like common sense and about being kind to people. However, they felt it is really important that every driver is aware of what can help those living with dementia and how a simple task such as swiping a bus pass can be overwhelming. Dementia aware drivers can ensure those travelling with dementia don’t become anxious about using the bus and end up isolated and lonely. SDFC secretary and session leader Cllr Liz Withington, feels that to have the main provider of buses in North Norfolk involved and determined to make that service dementia accessible is a major step forward in creating a Dementia Friendly Community. As a community we now hope that the other bus providers in the area, Stagecoach and also community transport groups will also look to developing dementia awareness across their organisations and SDFC would be more than happy to support them in this. Public transport is very much the focus for 2018 for SDFC with the second project involving supporting the community Rail Partnership for the Bittern line in considering ways to make the line from Sheringham to Cromer dementia accessible. Norwich station already comes under the Norwich Dementia Action Alliance but it is hoped long term to work towards a dementia friendly Bittern Line.

As responsible dog owners, we are increasingly annoyed and disgusted at the amount of dog mess left by dog owners in and around Sheringham. Twice this week we have walked up the coastal path to the coastguard station, only to have to dodge between at least 10 packages left by dog walkers. The people of Sheringham are very quick to put the blame on tourists’ dogs fouling our town, well there aren’t many tourists about now and few of them take the coastal walk to Weybourne. We spoke to an environmental warden along Sheringham sea front and he said he had noticed dog fouling was on the increase. An increase in wardens is one way to help catching these selfish, thoughtless people, but it is the dog owners themselves who have to take responsibility for their animals. If you are truly proud of where you live, pick up after your dogs. Derrick Feist, Sheringham Sheringham Independent 480

Dales Hotel - Upper Sheringham - 01263 824555 Access/visiting Sheringham during the pedestrianisation trials 7. Q Can I drive round Sheringham during the trials? A: People will be able to drive down Station Road as they do normally. When they reach the Clock Tower, they will have to go left up Church Street, rather than straight on down the High Street. If people drive down Beeston Road, they will be able to use the Cliff car park, but they will not be able to access the High Street by car. There will be no access to the High Street by car from the top of Wyndham Street. If people prefer not to drive into the town, there will be Park and Ride buses at Cookie’s Field. Other people may prefer to come by train or bus and walk through the town, so they can enjoy a meal and a few drinks! Buses: - No 5 stops at Sheringham High School and makes 8 journeys between 10am-4pm; - Buses Nos 5 and X44 and the Coasthopper stop at Cookies Field, 5 times per hour. Taxis 8. Q I am a taxi driver? How will this affect me? A: You will be able to drop off people by the Clock Tower as usual. You won’t be able to take people all the way down past the Clock Tower, unless they have difficulty walking or other mobility issues, or they live in the pedestrianised zone and need a lift to their front door. Shops/businesses in pedestrianised zone 9. Q I have a business in the pedestrianised zone. How will I get my deliveries during the trial? A: If your deliveries can only happen between 10-4 on a Saturday or Sunday then they will continue as now. But if you can move the deliveries either to a day when there is not a trial or to a time outside 10am-4pm, that would be much appreciated. 10. Q I am worried my trade will suffer as people who want to drive to my shop won’t be able to. A: The trial is only between 10am-4pm on a Saturday and Sunday and over just a few weekends. If people want a car to visit your shop they will be able to do that between 9am-10am or after 4pm. We hope you will have more visitors to your shop during the trial periods as shopping will be a more pleasant experience. This is one of the things we hope to test by asking you and other shops and businesses to keep a note of footfall before and during the trials. Cyclists 11. Q Will I be able to cycle in the pedestrianised zone? A: No, you won’t be able to cycle in the pedestrianised zone because there are likely to be a lot of people clint_brown_1@hotmail.com around. You will be able to leave your bike in the cycle racks provided, outside the pedestrianised zone. Help and advice during the pedestrianisation trials VW VW 12. Q. Will there be someone on duty helping people including visitors with what they can/can’t do? A: Yes. We will have professional, accredited stewards on duty throughout the trial period to guide people. They will be as helpful as possible, so do please ask! (DVW $QJOLD

A: We are going to do a lot of monitoring and ask for feedback from as many people as possible. There will be survey forms available at the barriers and also online. We hope that way to see if businesses and people in town think the trials are a success or if they have comments or suggestions they would like to make.

Diamond raises money for Walking with the Wounded
One Norfolk lady’s Christmas was made on Friday 22 December as a result of being the lucky winner of a beautiful diamond worth £2000 donated by Webbs Jewellers in Holt in aid of local charity Walking with the Wounded. Since the beginning of November people have had the opportunity to purchase a ticket for £10 to be in with the chance of winning the diamond, with all funds raised going directly to support our wounded ex-servicemen and women. The lucky winner was local resident Judith Mitchell, who was over the moon when Olly Webb, Director of Webbs rang her up from the shop to tell her of her exciting win. In total, the diamond competition raised £2,050 for Walking with the Wounded. The lucky ticket was drawn on Friday 22nd December by double leg amputee war veteran and local resident Duncan Slater.
Duncan Slater and Olly Webb in Webbs Jewellers on the day of the draw
Ed Parker, Co-Founder and CEO of Walking with the Wounded commented “We are hugely grateful to Webbs Jewellers – not only was it such a fun idea but hugely generous and the funds raised will significantly improve the lives of our ex-servicemen and women. Such an amount could pay for two veterans to complete our mental health programme or indeed pay for the training and skills needed for an ex-serviceman or woman to get back into employment allowing him/her to regain their independence. Thank you to Olly and all the team at Webbs.”
CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
On 9 January Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club was treated, after an excellent lunch, to a delightful talk on ‘Jewish Humour through the Ages’ by Mr Alex Bennett, a former minister of the synagogue in Norwich.
He pointed out that much Jewish humour derives from the times of persecution that Jews have suffered down the ages - being able to laugh at themselves was an aid to survival.
He also pointed out that there are many well-known Jewish comedians, such as Danny Kaye, Woody Allen, and Peter Sellers. Alex then regaled us with many amusing Jewish jokes, told by Jews about or against themselves.
We much enjoyed Alex’s talk and he was thanked by the Chairman, Jack Broughton.
Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 6 February, when (after lunch) our speaker will be Mr Simon Kinder on the subject of ‘Four Closet Communists’.
If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed.
Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

North Norfolk Photographic Society North Norfolk Photographic Society held a Club competition on 17 January, judged by Andy Wilson from Bungay. The competitions were for digital projected images and in fact four competitions, with Novices having one lot for pictures with subject matter ‘Work’ and the other an open section but for monochrome photos. Advanced members had the same groups.
Cromer cliff-top.
Then, the Advanced members. In the ‘Work’ section, Andy Wilson awarded joint 1st place to Grace Glaister and Tony Hallsworth. Grace’s picture was a mono picture of an office worker taken through a window from outside, showing piles of paperwork! Tony called his picture of 2 grumpylooking guys with a chainsaw ’Happy Hour’! Third was awarded to Rob Palethorp’s ‘Pass me the Hammer’.
Genesis by Tony Hallsworth
Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the Club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org
The Advanced mono competition was won by Tony Hallsworth with a very clever photo of either 5 young ladies (or probably one young lady photographed 5 times) sitting in a V formation and looking at the camera Exposed by Jackie Ormandy with very few clothes on at all - titled ‘Genesis’. Equal second went to Diana Knight ‘In Safe From the Novices, in the Work section, Jackie Hands’ (a charming Ormandy’s ‘Exposed’ showed the interior of photo of a soldier an engine ‘cut through‘ to show how it works. complete with uniSecond was a ‘Stone Mason’ at work by Val form and rifle leading Dawson and third ‘Anchor Maintenance’ by a small girl by the Barrie Price, which captured a busy gang on hand) and Lizzie WalCromer beach, at work on an anchor. lis ‘Abandoned The Novices mono competition was won by Scottish Bothy’ (a Barrie Price’s ‘Secret Meeting’ - the interior of landscape picture a church, all pillars and arches and showing two including a derelict people in earnest conversation. Second - ‘Low building). Tide on the Wash‘, a lovely shot of a horse and GLEN HOLMES BUILDING rider in silhouette against the sun glinting on the beach and sea, by Susie Kemp. Third was ‘No NEW HOMES Takers on a Cold Day’ by Heather Green, which REPAIRS & RESTORATIONS showed 2 EXTENSIONS / CONVERSIONS unoccupied benches in a setting that might be Quality as always was high. Andy Wilson made some very helpful general comments that if you have a specified subject such as ‘Work’ it’s no good submitting a photo of someone not at work and that ‘Mono’ means mono!

Our sincere thanks go to Budgens for once again providing us with the opportunity to collect in their store. The collection will be split between
• Nelson’s Journey which supports children and young people up to their 18th birthday that have experienced the death of a significant person in their life. They offer one to one support and opportunities to meet other children of a similar age who have also experienced bereavement.
• BOOM at The Benjamin Foundation, helps children and young people up to the age of 18, whose lives are affected by caring for someone in their family who amongst other things, may have a long-term illness or disability, mental health problem, learning disability, or who misuse alcohol or drugs.
• Holt Scouts, who strive to give youngsters opportunities, experiences and interests that may not otherwise be available to them.
The Rotary Club of Holt and District thank the local community for their generosity towards such good causes. Sheringham Independent 480

Hickling Broad & later Stubb Mill for Winter Raptor Roost on 18 February 12:30pm – 5pm - this event is for both beginners and reasonably experienced birders. We will first look for winter species, particularly wildfowl and waders, at Hickling Broad (a walk of perhaps an hour around the reserve reed-bed) and then walk to Stubb Mill to watch the winter raptor & crane roost. This is a lunchtime and afternoon trip. We will meet at the Hickling NWT car-park NR12 0BW at 12.30 for an initial al fresco lunch (bring your own!). The grid reference is TG 428 222. The NWT Visitor Centre has picnic tables and toilets. Currently their web site does not indicate any opening hours for the cafe. The afternoon raptor-watch is at Stubb Mill, which is reached with a moderate walk from the NWT car-park. Stout footwear or wellies are essential as some areas are wet underfoot. Warm windproof clothing is also essential because the raptor watch involves standing in the open, possibly for a couple of hours, which can be cold, but its also rewarding with the possibility of seeing Common Cranes, Hen Harriers, Marsh Harriers, Merlin, Buzzards, Short -eared and Barn Owls coming in to roost. As the raptors can be distant a telescope is useful if you have one. Children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. The walk will be led by Janice Darch. Conjuring up magic from another era
A dapper duo dealing in Victorian-style magic are bringing their show to Sheringham and the 21st century. Morgan & West, Time-Travelling Magicians have conjuring and comedy up their sleeves in a show that gets the audience involved as well as intrigued, amazed and baffled.
The prestidigitatory pair met while studying at Oxford in the late nineteenth century, but, thanks to a prototype time machine, have arrived in the modern day armed with a hatful of trickery and mindreading. Morgan & West have been performing magic shows all over the UK and at festivals all over the world since 2009. They have appeared at Wilton’s Music Hall in London, ‘fooled’ Penn & Teller on ITV’s Penn & Teller: Fool Us challenge show, and entertained dignitaries including Prince Charles.

Cromer Crematorium Cromer Crematorium opened its doors for the first Cremation Service on 16 January 2017, offering at last a much needed facility to serve the bereaved of north Norfolk and surrounding areas.
Work on the new crematorium, which is situated in a delightful and peaceful area
within the Town Council cemetery in Holt Road, began in May 2016 after many years in the planning process.
The building has been sympathetically designed to blend in with the surrounding woodland with the use of local flint stone and natural materials throughout.
The local community has been very supportive of the new crematorium, which offers a bright modern chapel with state of the art music facilities with the option to provide webcasting and DVD recording facilities, together with a Tribute Screen, should these be required, as well as offering the most advanced and efficient cremators available.
Sam Dellbridge, Manager of Cromer Crematorium said “From the first day that we opened our chapel to the public, by showing empathy, care and understanding, we are putting the needs of the families first above all else. The support shown has been amazing and goes to show that our service was needed in north Norfolk for a long time. By providing a modern new alternative chapel to the established crematoria in the

area and with memorial gardens, to aid with the mourning process, we are maintaining the ethos that the families come first”
Sam Dellbridge continues ‘I would like to personally thank all the families that have put their trust in us to help them say goodbye to a loved one, It is an honour to be able to help at such a difficult time. Every member of staff understands the importance of treating every funeral as if it is a member of their own family. I would also like to thank the Funeral Directors, Clergy, Celebrants and Cromer Town Council for their support throughout the last year and look forward to working with them for many more years to come”
Families from Cromer previously had to face a round trip of over 40 miles to the nearest Crematorium.
The crematorium is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and The Manager and staff may be contacted on 01263 511106, Fax 01263 517084 or email info@cromer-crematorium.co.uk

Under the guidance of manager, Debbie Ferris, and assistant manager, Kerry Baker, between 10 and 15 pupils come to the Woodfields Den each week to learn about the world of work and practice their literacy, numeracy and communication skills as part of the wider community. But, like every charity, Woodfields Den is heavily dependent on volunteers for it to run smoothly and successfully.
14
"We have an enthusiastic team who give up their time to support the fantastic work the shop does," comment Debra. "However, as we continue to expand our business, we are looking for additional volunteers for front facing staff, back office staff, shop dressers and promotional assistants. "So if you have a few hours to spare each week, if you want to make a difference to the lives of children with complex needs, if you want to improve your own CV, or if you just want to find out more about the school and the charity, contact me on 01263 824201 or email me at office@sheringhamwoodfields.norfolk.sch.uk. I will be delighted to answer your questions." Since opening in 2011, Woodfields Den has
contributed to school projects to improve opportunities and access to state-of-the art equipment and facilities. These include major schemes such as the installation of a new primary playground, a new minibus, and disco lighting in the school hall. In 2016/17, Woodfields Den had an income of £60k, £15k of which has directly benefited various initiatives at the school.
Woodfields Den is a charity well worth the support of the community - it impacts on the pupils of Sheringham Woodfields School in many worthwhile ways, providing life experiences and widening the horizons of our most vulnerable citizens. Give Debra a call if you can help.

Dementia - What steps can we take to safeguard our loved ones?
What can we do to help a family member or close friend following a diagnosis of dementia? It is important to remember that if an individual loses, or starts to lose mental capacity a spouse, next of kin, or family member is not automatically appointed to legally deal with their affairs.
Deputyship If you are caring for an individual who has been diagnosed with dementia but they do not have sufficient understanding to make a Lasting Power of Attorney you may apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order. This enables a person who is appointed as Deputy by the court to make decisions on behalf of the person living with dementia in circumstances when the person is unable to make those decisions themselves.
Lasting Powers of Attorney If an individual is diagnosed with dementia, or other condition that means they are likely to require help and support in the future, they should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney. This would allow the individual to appoint specific people they trust implicitly to help them, legally, manage their affairs. This can help safeguard against the person falling victim to financial abuse.
You can apply to be a person's Deputy if you are aged 18 or over. Such applicants tend to be close friends, relatives or legal professionals. The Court can appoint two or more Deputies for one person, if appropriate.
The process of applying to become a person's Deputy can take much longer than if the person had taken steps to make a Lasting Power of Attorney while they were still able to. This is because the person is no longer able to willingly appoint those they trust to act on their behalf. Therefore, the Court requires much more information to be able to make a decision that would be in that person's best interests.
Taking advice from a legal profession is essential here to ensure that the person fully understands the powers they are giving to their attorney and also considers who would be best in the role. We help individuals to explore whether a particular family member or friend is suitable. However, if the individual has not taken steps to make a Lasting Power or Attorney or is at the point where they no longer have sufficient mental capacity, the Court can appoint someone to act on the person's behalf as a Deputy.
Due to the nature of the application, and the additional work involved, the process of applying to be a person's Deputy is invariably going to be more costly than if the person had made a Lasting Power of Attorney. However, if the person has reached the point where they
can no longer make decisions on their own, and there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place, there is little choice other than to go down this route. We aim to deal with such applications as quickly and cost efficiently as possible. We also ensure we make applicants aware of the projected timescales, and possible delays with the Court system, from the outset.
Summary If you are aware that a family member or friend has been diagnosed with dementia we recommend you encourage them to seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity to ensure they get their affairs in order and make a Lasting Power of Attorney. Although this can seem like a daunting task, the help and advice from a skilled lawyer will ensure that process runs smoothly and effectively.
If, however, making a Lasting Power of Attorney is not possible, we suggest a Deputyship application is considered. Our team of trained experts are here to help guide you through this process.
To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Wills, Trusts and Probate solicitors will be delighted to help. Contact Jennifer Nash for appointments at our North Walsham office on 01692 660230 or Sheringham on 01263 823398.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB
Kelling Probus Club held its January meeting at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham on 18t January.
Thirty members and guests were welcomed by Chairman Ken Murray. After a very tasty lunch with lots of fellowship, the Club welcomed former diplomat Richard Clark, who spoke on 'Episodes from my diplomatic Life'.
Our Club was enthralled by the story he told. Starting as a diplomat in 1977, Richard served his country for 26 years and in this talk, covered his first posting to Venezuela for four and a half years.
Venezuela was a difficult first posting. Firstly, Richard was sent in to the Andes to learn Spanish and then spent most of his time in Caracas unlike today, the country was prosperous in 1978 with a strong economy. He found the most difficult things to cope with were the violence, the corruption and the traffic jams in all the cities. He told us that almost
everyone had a gun and the night time air was full of guns being discharged. With the help of pictures on screen, he showed us some of the beautiful scenery and wildlife.
He recounted how all diplomatic orders were taken round the world by Queen's Messengers as there were no e-mails or mobile phones in those days.
He then told us that the Venezuelan females were the most attractive in the world, and often were finalists in Miss World.
He also told us that the Venezuelan people made good friends and were honest in many ways despite the corruption.
He gave some good answers to our questions and was thanked by Michael Bennet for an enthralling talk.
Over the past 12 months the Club has been entertained by some wonderful speakers. We meet on the third Thursday of each month at The Dales for lunch and a speaker. Interested? Call John Whittington on 01263 820333.
New Year’s Day Dip in Sheringham
On New Year’s Day several hardy souls (143 to be exact) braved the elements, not to mention the chilly North Sea, for (what is now becoming an annual event - again) the New Years Day Dip.
The event was organised by Liam Cooper and Chris Taylor and involved many local organisations to whom we are most grateful.
Being organised by the foregoing Liam and Chris, both Sheringham RNLI crewmen, it’s not surprising that many other Sheringham RNLI members became involved.
Help also came from the Sheringham Coastguards who were on hand to ensure
W NO N E OP
that all participants were kept safe, albeit that they returned to the beach a little colder than when they entered the water! As a result of this chill factor Bob Brewster and his staff at The Crown Inn plied participants with hot toddies and also donated a £20 voucher for the best fancy dress outfit.
Members of the Sheringham Carnival committee also got involved in assisting on the day and also provided the necessary insurance cover for all the dippers.
This is another fantastic example of how the people of Sheringham come together in order to make things happen in the town and make us

Youngsters aged eight to 16 queued back on to the street, January sale style, last month as 81 of them vied for places in the 60-strong cast.
Bugsy Malone is at Sheringham Little Theatre from Friday 6 April to Saturday 14 April (no performance on 8th) at 7.30pm nightly and a 2.30pm matinee on the Saturday.
They were put through their acting, dancing, and singing paces in the morning, before afternoon ‘call backs’ for those chosen to join the team.
For tickets, and more Theatre youth outreach worker information about getting Youngsters at auditions for Bugsy Malone at Sheringham Little Theatre. and show co-director Bridget involved with youth drama, Photo: Richard Batson Robinson said “It was a fantastic call the box office on 01263 turnout, with a good spread of 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com. ages and great to see some new faces.”
Bugsy Malone is set in the ‘speakeasy’ prohibition days of New York. It tells the story of rival gang leaders Fat Sam and Dandy Dan. Dan’s gang is winning the war with their custard-shooting splurge guns, so Sam calls on ex-boxer Bugsy for help.
It is the annual youth musical drama by the theatre, and follows last year’s successful production of Oliver!
There will now be 10 weeks of rehearsals to bring the show to the boil for curtain up on 6 April.
Also on the show’s creative team is 23-year-old professional actor Harry Williams from North Walsham whose involvement in the same show 12 years ago in two roles – gangster Shady and the barber – inspired him to go on to drama school.
Harry, who last year played the scarecrow in the venue’s Wizard of Oz panto and directed its Little Shop of Horrors youth show, said “It is such a fun show because kids are playing grown-ups and because there are so many opportunities to act, dance and sing.

Walkers are Welcome:
2018 national annual get together in Cromer Network of villages and towns will be invited to Cromer event
The annual Walkers are Welcome get together will be held in Cromer in 2018.
The Cromer group, part of a network of more than 110 towns and villages all over Britain, will host the event on 12 – 14 October. Invitations will be sent to representatives from all accredited towns and villages.
Group members are planning a series of talks, walks and other events around town. Among these events, a reception will be held on Cromer Pier, which is owned by North Norfolk District Council and operated by Openwide. And the Council Chamber at North Norfolk District Council will be used for the Walkers are Welcome annual meeting. Cllr Hilary Cox, a North Norfolk District Councillor and Chairman of Cromer Walkers are Welcome, said “This will be a great opportunity for local accommodation providers, restaurants, pubs, shops and attractions to increase their trade at a time of year when the town is traditionally a little quieter. Special offers, events and delegate discounts will be sure to benefit a wide range of businesses, with extra promotion from Walkers are Welcome.” And Cllr Nigel Dixon, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: “Behind Cromer’s Walkers are Welcome accreditation is a lot of hard work from a dedicated team of people. Congratulations to them for attracting the annual get together, which will further raise the profile of Cromer as a destination for walkers and provide a welcome boost to the visitor economy away from the high season.

“It is one of North Norfolk District Council’s aims to support the visitor economy away from the main season so that businesses can benefit from increased activity during an extended season.”
Making the decision to bring the annual get together to Cromer, the national Walkers are Welcome committee in Cumbria acknowledged the hard work and achievements of the small but busy Cromer group.
The group has created printed pocket walks, a town food and drink guide, window sticker and discount schemes, town information boards, footpath and signpost monitoring, negotiation with transport companies and liaison with local businesses. The latter of these led to the creation of the Walkers are Welcome beer, made by Poppyland Brewery. The group has also liaised and consulted with Town, District and County Councils. Walkers are Welcome is a non-profit making Community Interest Company. It is a nationwide initiative, launched in 2007 to encourage towns and villages to be ‘welcoming to walkers’.
