SHERINGHAM COASTWATCH IS LOOKING OUT FOR YOU If variety is the spice of life, being a volunteer with Sheringham Coastwatch might be the ideal task for you.

What other voluntary role ranges from giving water to a thirsty dog to (on one occasion!) helping to dispose of a hand-grenade? Or helping a holiday-maker with weather or tidal information and then helping in a Coastguard search; and all without moving more than ten feet.

Our volunteers keep a lookout over the cliffs, beaches and sea visible from the former Coastguard station high above Sheringham golf course. If we spot someone in trouble, we immediately contact the emergency

services (usually HM Coastguard) and provide any assistance required by them. Continued on page 4...

Continued from front cover... So as well as enjoying the spectacular views, there is enormous satisfaction in helping to ensure the safety of those at sea or using the beaches and cliff paths.

Whether you are male or female, of working age or retired, you could enrich your life by joining our friendly group of volunteers. Members come from many different backgrounds and ‘work’ for three hours on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

No previous maritime experience is needed. Full on-the-job training and on-going support are provided. Professionalism and common sense are the order of the day, not physical ability.

Would you like to join us? You must be at least 18 years of age and fit enough to walk to the Station up a fairly steep hill over some uneven ground. Further details and an application form can be downloaded from our website (www.sheringhamcoastwatch.org.uk) or collected from the Station located on the coastal path over Skelding Hill above Sheringham golf course.

Dear Margaret,

Just recently I took a short walk along Sheringham’s Coastal path, from the boating pond up to the Coastal Watch hut. What a delightful path especially for our paying holiday makers. Setting out from the pond on a hot summer evening one’s bare arms and legs are caressed by gently swaying fronds of nettles. The path is narrow here, passing another walker greatly increases the caresses. Moving on, your face and arms are now embraced by the claws on grasping strands of brambles. Further still your legs enjoy the pleasure of hair removal by long blades of coarse grasses. Added to all that pleasure is the delightfully uneven path, peppered with unexpected roots, protruding boards and ruts, all causing the walker to stagger along, possibly falling through the erratic fence down onto the concrete below. Now though, the path broadens giving you a choice of which rut to pick your way on then closes in again up the hill to the hut. The encroaching bushes here though brush you benignly. Reaching the top, the view is great, such that one can forget the precarious and precipitous cliff edge and readily slip down to the shingle below. All in all a wonderful walk, and all that in just ½ mile of the coastal path from Sheringham. G, Sheringham

Weybourne Folk Weekend

Weybourne Folk Weekend on 14/15/16 September is now in its 8th year. As usual most events are at Weybourne Village Hall (NR25 7AH) and are free apart from the Saturday Night Ceilidh/Barn Dance.

We have always received generous support from Weybourne Community Fund and Blakeney Old Wild Rovers towards the overheads of this increasingly popular event, for which we are very grateful.

We kick-off on Friday evening at 7.30pm at the Village Hall with a free concert featuring ‘The Harvesters’, a very talented trio from Warwickshire whose speciality is bluegrass, americana old time/ good time songs and dance. They performed at our first event back in 2011 and we are pleased to welcome them back. They will be staying for the weekend. Local singers and musicians will support.

We start at 1.30pm on Saturday 15 September with local performers followed by Chris Dodson and the Strumsters Ukulele Band from Ely - expect some George Formby songs (he did have Norfolk connections). Sarah O’Neill is a superb fiddle player who may bring accomplices. The Harvesters will put in another appearance.

Saturday evening provides a choice. The annual Ceilidh/Barn Dance at the Village Hall with ‘Blancoes Yard’. Always popular - it doesn’t matter whether you are familiar with the dances or not because full instructions are given and at £6.50 it’s a bargain! You can bring your own drinks and a picnic to this event.

Alternatively make your way to the back room of the Ship Inn for a free sing-around session with local singers and musicians. Both events are from 8pm until 11pm.

On Sunday 16 September we start at 12noon with our annual walk around the sea, cliffs and windmill - 1.5 miles to get to know the locality. Local performers then begin the afternoon at 1.30pm.

Our main guest today is Flossie Malavialle, a French born singer/ guitarist who brings her own unique brand of Geordie/Franglais banter together with a fine voice. The Harvesters will be with us again and Blakeney Old Wild Rovers will wind up proceedings for one more year.

Why not come along and join in the choruses or just revel in the general entertainment. We offer a raffle each day to help offset the costs of this fine weekend which can’t be beaten for value and top-class performances.

We have a licence to sell beer and tea and coffee will be available. You are also welcome to bring your own food/ drinks/ glasses to the Village Hall only. We appreciate that the 40s weekend coincides this year but never mind. Folks in appropriate dress are welcome at all events.

Wills & LPAs LPAs Wills UST H AVE –AM MUST HAVE

At Silver and Ward we pride ourselves in giving our clients peace of mind with our expert legal advice explained in plain English. We work extremely hard during our lives to provide for family and loved ones. However, the majority of us fail to ensure that continues if we become unwell, or when we pass away. So, how can you guarantee that? (1) LPAs (Lasting Power of Attorney) – are a safety net for you and your loved ones if you were to be involved in an accident, or have a diagnosis leading to diminished mental capacity. It is incredibly important to have them in place no matter how old you are. As surprising as it sounds, your spouse, or partner, does not have any legal right to make health decisions on your behalf, or deal with your money and property if you are unable to.

(2 ) Wills – can help you to secure a future for those you leave behind. If you do not leave a Will the Law decides who will inherit your estate. This may not be what you want and it is unlikely to provide adequately for your family. A Will prepared by Silver and Ward can provide reassurance and peace of mind for you and your family and help reduce any risks and pitfalls that may arise in the future. We will write it in plain English to avoid any misunderstandings. We offffer fixed fees for Wills and LPAs so you know immediately how much it is going to cost and a FREE INITIAL APPOINTMENT. We can meet with you in your home, Nursing Home, or Hospital at no extra cost.

In the words of Benjamin Franklin “Never leave till tomorrow that which you can do today”.

How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless child! Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr I have long used ‘King Lear’ as a metaphor for caution when carrying out succession planning. Richard Eyre’s powerful and unsettling production for the BBC reminded me of its timelessness. As it is the journalistic ‘silly season’, I hope you will allow me some licence.

Quick plot reminder : The 80-year-old King Lear decides to retire and divides his kingdom of ancient Britain among his daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia, according to their affection for him. Lear's older daughters give their father flattering answers and so inherit but Cordelia, Lear’s youngest and favourite daughter, remains silent, saying that she has no words to describe how much she loves her father. Lear quickly learns that this was a bad decision. Goneril and Regan lose no time in undermining the little authority that Lear still holds. Unable to believe that his beloved daughters are betraying him, Lear slowly goes insane.

Lear is a powerful exploration of greed, love, power and mortality - all themes in the working life of the private client lawyer. Less romantic (and, thankfully, less gory) modern equivalent cases scatter the Law Reports over the centuries.

The diminished power and respect for the older person who has enjoyed ‘giving with warm hands’ on the ‘there are no pockets in shrouds’

principle is a problem.

Making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) appointing good and independent attorneys, perhaps professionals, to look after your finances, in the event of incapacity and frailty, is vital.

Using the originally-medieval device of a Trust to retain control, but not ownership, could perhaps have saved Lear. Discretionary Trusts are wonderfully flexible and allow for changing family circumstances after the giving of assets.

We should all have a well-drafted and up-todate Will.

Conversely, what about families where the elderly relative is clearly in decline? What to do? In Eyre’s production Anthony Hopkins as Lear swigged away from a hipflask. Perhaps this would explain much of Lear’s behaviour and even that decision to divide his kingdom in a spectacularly misguided bid to prevent ‘future strife’. Had he taken good legal advice, Lear would never have done it!

September is here

I am wandering through a little wood on this bright September day, my companions are grey rabbits who help me on my way. An owl swoops past me and the rowan berries fall, I see ivy growing thickly on a broken stone wall. A few bright poppies make my pathway light, and I notice that some blackberries are now plump and ripe. The leaves are changing colour, autumn is almost here, although the sun is shining there's a nip in the air. The sky is clouding over, was that a drop of rain? Never mind, I can walk this way again.

1940s weekend harvest festival celebration at St Andrews Church

Once again St Andrews Methodist Church Cromer Road Sheringham is planning to combine its Harvest Festival Service on Sunday 16 September at 10.30am with the popular 40s weekend.

The service this year led by the Revd Ann Bossingham, is entitled ‘Mum’s the Word!’ and will include a contribution from a professional 40s singer Rachel Eyre. We hope to be joined by visitors to the town suitably attired if possible in clothing which reflects war-time Britain.

Following the service on the front lawn of the church, under a marquee Rachel will sing wartime favourites whilst our guests feast on such delights as spam sandwiches and recipes from war-time Britain. We hope to build on the success of last year, when we were joined by passers-by many of whom not only sang along to the music but also got up and danced!

SwanSports is for those athletes who just like to run

The session will focus on the fundamentals of running, working on the principles of strengthening the inner core base, offering the athlete an insight in to the technique of running, running drills, run session, sprint start & sprint training and finishing with some fun interaction running games.

Athletes will come to learn the basic movements of running, and each activity will support the athlete to refine these movements into more defined movement techniques.

Fundamental movement skills are important in the physical development of an athlete and when an athlete is confident and competent with these skills, they can develop sport-specific and complex movement skills; supporting their running journey.

To book your place visit Bookwhen.com/SwanSports

The day forms part of the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the current church building. Revd Ann Bossingham and her husband Mike (both Methodist Ministers, were married at St Andrews)

A warm welcome to all to celebrate with us in style.

Sheringham Plastic Aware Update August 2018

Interest is growing in the gaining of recognition for Sheringham as a plastic-free coastline town and it looks like we have exciting times ahead as increasing numbers of people get involved.

Businesses across a variety of sectors are working with the Steering Group to establish the degree of progress which has been made to move away from single-use plastics. It is clear that some businesses have already made noticeable changes whilst others are planning the changes they will make in the coming months.

To increase momentum, a small number of businesses across various sectors are being encouraged to become ‘Plastic-free Champions’ and to lead the way for others to follow. It is planned that all businesses involved in the reduction of single-use plastics will be recognised by local people and visitors alike.

A ‘Going Plastic-Free Checklist’ is being prepared and will be made available for Sheringham businesses who are keen to make changes in the way they use plastic.

Becoming a single-use plastic free town is not just the responsibility of our town’s business community, each and every one of us who live in and love Sheringham can take action every day to play our individual part and have a huge collective impact. At her July presentation at The Lighthouse, Amy Lusher, a renowned marine biologist talked to us about the 4 actions we can all take:

• STOP! using plastic carrier bags – re-use your own • STOP! using take-away cups for hot drinks – re-use your own • STOP! buying water/soft drinks in plastic bottles – re-use your own • STOP! Using plastic drinking straws – use/ask for paper straws instead

In our next update we will talk in more detail about the specific actions that are being taken across businesses, community teams and individuals. Remember this is our town and it’s our collective actions which determine its future.

Please share your stories by sending them to vicki.espin@cecoach.com

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

Kelling Probus Club met at the Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham. After a tasty lunch, 24 members enjoyed a talk on 'Sugar' from Mike Bennett, one of our members.

Mike had worked in the sugar industry through his working life. Sugar was first mentioned in 300 BC. The original canes were found in Indonesia and in 325 BC it was recorded that there was a reed that produced honey without bees. The canes were soon planted all over Asia and Africa and eventually in Europe.

The Crusaders mentioned it in journals.

When Columbus sailed to America in 1488 he took sugar cane with him and the settlers he took with him planted it in the Caribbean where it became a successful crop. There was a shortage of labour for the crop and thus began the slave trade where Africans were transported to the plantations. The original imports were crude and not refined but by the 1700s refining was becoming common, as was fermented molasses or rum and the importing became very important.

Napoleon was in power in France and the British blockaded Europe to prevent imports by France. Their answer was to develop sugar beet and factories sprung up all over France.

During the two wars sugar became a scarce product due to shipping problems so sugar beet became more popular. There were refineries all over Britain and beet became a common crop. As time went on, refineries became more sophisticated. Tate & Lyle merged to become the country’s major producer.

Mike concluded by saying how important Norfolk was for the industry with two big refineries and John Innes Institute.

After members’ questions, Rohan Fennel thanked Mike for his talk. Our club meets once a month for lunch and a speaker. Contact John Whittington on 01263 820333 if you are interested.

RENEWED STATUS FOR FAIRTRADE TOWN

We are delighted to have received an update of our Fairtrade Town Status, from the Fairtrade Foundation.

The Fairtrade Foundation was impressed with the work that we have been doing and below is part of the letter received.

They write ‌ “It is great to hear the Town Council, which had again appointed a representative onto the Steering Group, passed a resolution reconfirming its commitment to support Sheringham as a Fairtrade Town.

It was lovely to read about all the events you hosted from Christmas Fairs and regular Fairtrade stalls in Churches to the Children's Postcard Competition.

It's also great to hear that you received a significant amount of press coverage and promotion for your events as it contributes to making the Fairtrade group made known in the local community. This is crucial in making your Fairtrade group known amongst your local community.

Congratulations again and best wishes with your continued campaigning!" Brenda Smith Matthew Bason

The Copeman Centre is a very comfortable venue, with wide level access suitable for disabled visitors, soft seats, and plenty of free parking. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Charley, the cat mentioned last time, has had a recurrence of his skin problem and is now receiving further treatment. Until this has been completely cleared up he will not be available for adoption.

Kittens, Jessie, Joffrey and Laine have left for new homes and cats, Will and Jazz have been reserved. We have also had people contacting us who may be interested in giving homes to Bobo, Millicent, Mittens and Rosy. Stephanie will be able to give them more information on the cats when they call, as it is important to ensure they have the right cat for their circumstances and to make sure the new home is not too close to their old one. With the summer holidays ending, and a more bearable temperature, we are hoping that there will be lots more enquiries from people wishing to offer our cats and kittens new homes.

When the cats come into care, we ask the person handing them in to give as much information as they can about the cats. This helps us to identify the type of home they will need and whether or not they are likely to enjoy living with other cats, or with dogs and also whether they would be suitable for homes with young children. They can also advise on what food they have been eating and whether or not they have been on a special diet or have ongoing health problems. This information helps us to find the right home for each cat. Obviously, when a cat is handed in by someone other than its previous owner, or because it is a stray, this is not always possible. It usually takes a few days for the cat to settle and adapt to coming to live in one of our pens, which must feel very strange to them, especially if they come from a house and have had free access to going outside. It is not the natural environment for them and some adapt better than others. Some are quite confident and actually blossom while in care. Others, because they are confined will not show their true nature until they have settled in their new home. There is a home out there for them all and Stephanie will be able to identify which ones will suit your lifestyle.

This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with Rosy, has finished her maternity duties any other enquiries. and is now available for adoption The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Hedgehog Haven

Titch, Joe and Digger came into my care after their mum had died. Titch had a bad case of lungworm and was rapidly losing weight. She only weighed 90 gms. As lungworm is contagious, all three were treated and had a course of antibiotics.

Lungworm is very often fatal, especially for hoglets, and they have a long way to get to release weight, but I am pleased to say that all three are still with me and slowly gaining weight.

Tackling difficult areas with fillers

Why do fillers frequently look so false? Why you need to see an experienced doctor to minimise risks of going under the needle

A few years ago the Sunday Times did an article on downside of fillers called ‘The Joker Face’. “You’ve seen this face – it’s everywhere. There’s something muzzle-like about the nose and mouth. The lips are taut and bulbous, and a little wonky when they smile. In extreme cases, the cheeks sit like ping pong balls under spongy skin, eyes peering out of puffy sockets. The ‘pillow face’, our current answer to the 1990s wind-tunnel look, is down to dermal fillers. These semi-permanent gels are injected into the lips, cheeks and the lines between the nose and the mouth in a bid for youthful plumpness. Trouble is, the result is often not eternal youth, but a face like a water-retentive lion …"

Unfortunately things have got worse with this becoming almost the normal. Facial rejuvenation is an art and a science. It requires a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, facial ageing, skin, soft tissue and bone structure. This knowledge and skill requires years of study and practice. Artful injection treatments can produce some very nice and pleasing results. ‘The results should whisper and not scream’.

The temples, chin, jawline, tear trough and forehead are difficult to inject so you need an experienced doctor to do these and not someone who injects fillers ‘on the side’. Ask your practitioner how many filler injections they do and can they show some before and after photos. When injecting fillers it is important to stay away from the important structures such as nerves and blood vessels. So a deep understanding of anatomy is essential. When the jaw angle gets blurred, it makes a huge difference in how the person is perceived. We can inject fillers to contour the jawline, angle of the jaw and chin. Botulinum toxin injections remain popular for this area as in Nefertiti lift. As we age, we start to lose a little chin projection. This can be restored using fillers.

Another area where age-related changes can be very visible is the temple. There is not only loss of fat but also loss of other soft tissues and bone. Additionally, patients can develop sun damage, skin laxity and muscle

Sheringham Independent 495

thinning. We are trying to replace a three-dimensional, multi-structural loss with one or two injection. We can usually get most of the temporal areas filled effectively with one or two injections. That minimizes the risk of danger and produces very nice and effective yet subtle rejuvenation.

We routinely inject fillers in frown lines and forehead lines but this is a tricky area to inject-even for very experienced practitioners. A more comprehensive approach to the forehead involves three-dimensional forehead reflation. This approach differs drastically from simply filling lines because it requires placing fairly substantial amounts of filler on underlying bone while avoiding the blood vessels. This is a challenging technique that can produce beautiful results.

There is more to dermal filler injections than simple line filling. Strategic placement of small volumes can produce very nice and natural results and avoid so called ‘pillow face’. ‘Toothache, Saints and Churches’ was the intriguing title of the talk given to us on Tuesday 7 August, by Dr John F Beal, MBE, PhD, Honorary Senior Lecturer at Leeds University. He is also an NHS Consultant and a former Chairman of the Lindsey Society for the History of Dentistry.

NORFOLK’S NORFOLK’S LARGEST CHOICE SKIPS! CHOICE OF SK IPS IP S! The bes alue with dr op-off and pickup bestt v value drop-off servic e extended to 14 days HIRE! HIRE! service

Covering C overing North Norf Norfolk olk and the Broads! Broads!

Dr Beal began by asking whether toothache had been a problem in mediaeval England. Letters and diaries of royals and other wealthy people indicated that this was indeed the case. Oral hygiene was rudimentary, and both halitosis and toothlessness were common.

Archaeological evidence included skulls where there were signs of decayed teeth and of tooth loss. What might be called ecclesiastical evidence is to be found in sculptures and grotesques in many churches and cathedrals, depicting people grimacing with toothache. For example, two such grotesques are to be found on the south wall of Cromer Parish Church.

Dr Beal described some of the 'remedies' used in an attempt to cure toothache, quite often grotesque in themselves, such as the application of boiled liquid from mandrakes or one could go for instance to the blacksmith for him to pull a tooth out! An alternative to these 'remedies' was to pray to various saints, including especially Saint Apollonia, the patron saint of toothache sufferers. Depictions of St Apollonia show her holding some forceps and an extracted tooth!

Dr Beal said that in England there are 17 depictions of St Apollonia in 69 churches, of which about two-thirds are in East Anglia and Devon, on rood screens or in stained glass. An example of the latter is a roundel in Norwich Cathedral.

Thank you from Lily and Eve!

We were pleased to receive a copy of this lovely thank you drawing from a proud grandad in Overstrand whose young granddaughters Lily and Eve obviously enjoyed their holidays!

Sheringham & District RAFA

The Sheringham & District Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association held its annual reception on 21 August at Driftway Farm, Felbrigg thanks to the generosity of Councillor Judy Oliver. The reception took the form of a hog roast held in delightful sunshine and a glorious setting. Some 57 members and guests attended. During the event the Branch held a raffle for a spitfire souvenir watch kindly donated by Branch member Denis Cozens. The watch was won by Mrs S Blackman and the raffle raised over £100 towards the RAF 100 Wings Appeal and £50 for a donkey sanctuary.

North Norfolk Astronomy Society News

The North Norfolk Astronomy Society (NNAS) is a friendly local group based at Wiveton. We have two upcoming events we hope readers will find interesting. Two sites in North Norfolk (Kelling Heath Holiday Park and Wiveton Downs) have been designated Dark Sky Discovery Sites. These sites are selected on the basis of their lack of light pollution, and therefore the skies have breathtaking views of the stars and the Milky Way. Readers are invited to a Star Party at Wiveton Downs. Members of the NNAS will be on hand to guide visitors around the night sky, and there will be telescopes set up, with expert NNAS members on hand to point out sights of interest. This event will be held on 15 September, or if the weather is bad on that night, the event will be held on the following night, 16 September. The event will start a 7pm. The NNAS is also holding a Sky Tour and Telescopes evening at the Chequers Inn in Binham on 15 October. Come and have a drink and a meal then join us to view the stars, constellations, and maybe a few planets! The evening starts around 8.30pm. If you are interested, please email events@nnas.org for further information and directions to the site.

Dear Margaret,

I guess I am not the only one who has these plastic bags put through their doors every week, I have had yet another two this week. If you take time to read what is written on them sometimes the English is not good and I think we all know why this is. Can I suggest that we never leave anything on our doorsteps for these people, but if you have any items that you no longer want then take them to one of our six charity shops that we now have in Sheringham. They are always so pleased for any donations.

Thanking you, Debbie Watson

AGE CONCERN

Garden & Property Maintenance Services

Dear Mrs. Smith I must object To the way you called me 'old', I really am as young as I feel, I'm strong and keen and bold My age is immaterial I still look almost young, I'm placid, meek and good-looking And still not highly strung I might veer to the right hand side And go a steady ten But I can go even faster Just like other men My eyesight is quite normal I can see for twenty feet And although I'm vegetarian I still eat lots of meat. So you see, my age is nothing Of that I am emphatic So you must stop saying that I'm old

Turn Tail

Yours sincerely, Gerry Atrick

Paul Scrivener

How can you go off and leave me? Just turn tail and walk out on me? After everything I’ve done for you, To leave shows such disloyalty! When we first met, you were homeless. I welcomed you into my life. Is this the way you repay me? Your perfidy cuts like a knife! If you walk out now, then it’s over, I won’t be your personal doormat! If this is your choice, then so be it. You are a most ungrateful cat! Frances Wraight
