No work doesn't stop work experience! Turf cutting event marks start of hospital expansion at Cromer A major pandemic has not stopped students from a Norwich school getting work experience.

Continued from front cover... They were joined by Norwich-based firm Pentaco Construction Ltd which won the contract for the work, which will see the refurbishment and extension of the Davison Unit, a disused ward at the hospital.

Aviva, the multinational insurance company, set Sixth Form students from University Technical College Norfolk (UTCN) a four-day challenge. The challenge was to think about ways to help Aviva's customers and better serve them through the current COVID-19 crisis.

The North Norfolk Macmillan Centre is being funded and built in partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the N&N Hospitals Charity.

The challenge was launched via Microsoft Teams - the online conferencing software - and involved small teams of Year 12 students, who were given a week to develop a workable solution to the challenge. Each team was guided by a representative from Aviva, meeting ‘virtually' through Teams, to develop their ideas using either an existing App or developing a new piece of software. Their ideas were presented to Aviva, again, via Teams.

The building work on the ÂŁ4.85million project is expected to take around a year, with the new centre enabling patients with cancer to access treatment and support closer to home.

The centre will include: • Six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day. • Three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually and space for new cancer diagnostics, including prostate biopsy. • A Macmillan cancer information and support centre. • The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management.

The prize-winning group under the mentorship of Jo Satterley, Aviva Business Analysis Practice Lead, consisted of Shai Brown, Owen Appleton, Annie Mbawo, Yaser Abdelaoui and Nathan Wakefield. Their customer focused solution was achieved through fantastic teamwork, collaboration and research resulting in a slick presentation to the Aviva judging panel.

Neil Baxter, Resource Strategy Lead, from Aviva said: "We were impressed with both their proposal of multivariant testing of the website which the team had designed, and with the quality of their presentation and their research skills. They looked at other industry sectors as well as other insurance companies to help formulate their ideas."

Jo Haywood, chair of Macmillan’s North Norfolk Fundraising Committee, said: “It’s wonderful to see building work progressing and this will make such a difference to cancer patients living in North Norfolk who are currently travelling to Norwich for their treatment. Cromer Hospital was originally built using public donations so there’s a great parallel there between what happened then and the current work. This means so much to the people of North Norfolk.�

Nathan Wakefield, UTCN Year 12 Student, said: "I found this experience with Aviva allowed me to get a better insight into the world of work and how teams operate in large businesses to find a solution to a difficult problem."

Owen Appleton, UTCN Year 12 Student, said: "I found the Aviva Hackathon to be a great experience in which I enhanced my individual and team working skills. Home working on Microsoft Teams was a tough challenge, but through excellent teamwork we managed to pull through and work together as a team extremely well. Joanna, our Aviva mentor, had experience that taught the whole team a large amount and was a real eye opener to different career paths within Aviva."

Sam Higginson, Chief Executive of NNUH said: “This is an important step in delivering extra services at Cromer as part of our mission to deliver first class treatments to the population in North Norfolk and further afield. We are delighted to see the work get underway providing additional capacity to meet the needs of an older, rural patient group.�

Shai Brown, UTCN Year 12 Student, said: "I used the Aviva Hackathon to my advantage to improve my team leading skills and team working skills. It was an amazing opportunity for all of us, as students, to see how large businesses are coping during the pandemic. Overall, this was very insightful, and I know we all had a lot to take away from this challenge."

Sophie Skipp, UTCN's Employer Engagement Co-ordinator is full of praise for the outcome of the exercise, saying: "In all, 80 students and 12 Aviva employees were involved in the project. At UTCN we prepare our students for the working world. It's in our DNA. When a business comes to us sharing how they have adapted their working practices from home it would be criminal not to mirror this in school. These students can face their future employers in interviews with real experiences of collaborating online, just like their parents. The dedication and flexibility of all those involved in adapting to the current working environment is a fantastic example of the commitment to UTCN shown by members of our Industry Liaison Group."

Gardening in Lockdown

At the beginning of Lockdown, I was very concerned that I would not be allowed to go to my allotment, something I have tendered for many years.

When I heard on the radio and then read, that the government had allowed allotments to be used for exercise provided we social distanced, I was over the moon.

I have worked in the area of social care, mental health and special needs education for several years, using Outdoor Education and Horticulture as a means of therapy. It is now well known that stress, dementia and obesity are also areas that can be tackled being outdoors.

As a result of the lockdown, we have seen an uptrend in ‘Growing your Own’ and in the early stages, seed companies could not keep up with demand. There is no doubt that getting out into the great outdoors has helped many people through this tough time.

People suffering from depression talk of the garden being a refuge, one that helps feelings of calm and relaxation, as well as learning new skills - enjoyment - curiosity and hope.

Gardening also leads you into what do we do with the food grown! Challenging the ability to cook and discovering further skills different tastes - good wholesome foods. Steering us away from processed foods, fast food and excess sugar and fat.

During the lockdown my wife and I were often seen in the kitchen completing batches of cooking to be portioned and frozen. Together with the outdoors comes this new taste of freshness…

Research has shown that gardening can reduce

For those who are new to growing your own and having found a new interest there are one

or two life lessons to learn:-

1. Start small and build up, otherwise you can be overwhelmed by the care required.

2. Only grow what you like to eat. There is no point in growing say courgettes if you are not going to use them.

3. Whatever you grow, keep a diary or notebook, sow seeds sparingly and make sure you sow for succession…. using the whole of the growing period. You can get three or four crops through the season.

4. Now is the time to start home composting or on the allotment, as the compost will enrich the soil for next year.

5. Planning for next year, starts now and continues through the winter - with overwinter crops of garlic, winter onions and broad beans if you like them!

Next time I will talk about raised beds which are very useful in a small patch.

When I last wrote in January I could never have imagined what a turn of events was just around the corner, none of us could. The last few months have been by turn challenging and inspiring, and have truly shown us once again how lucky we are to live, here in North Norfolk. I write for this one episode not as a County Councillor but as the Leader of North Norfolk District Council.

Firstly my heartfelt condolences go out to all the families and friends of those who have lost their lives to Covid-19, it is truly a dreadful disease that is indiscriminate in those it takes from us.

Whilst remembering those people, we also need to send our hugely grateful thanks to all our residents, local community groups, NHS Staff and key workers who stepped up to the plate and worked around the clock to protect others, and to save lives over these last months.

North Norfolk has thankfully seen a low level of COVID infections 219 cases, meaning 210 cases per 100,000 population and placing us 291st out of 315 local authority areas (1 being high and 315 being low) in England. There will be many contributing factors to this figure including our rurality, low population density, lack of an acute hospital in the District - but equally with one of the oldest population profiles in the country we could have seen very different outcomes as national data suggests vulnerability to COVID increases significantly with age. In this respect I believe the Council has supported our residents, communities and businesses very well over the past 18 weeks and continues to do so in seeking to control and manage the spread of the virus locally through the social distancing measures we have put in place ourselves in our towns, seafront and Broads tourist areas.

Whilst I know the Council does not always get everything right we are committed to doing our very best for our local residents. I could not be prouder of how the team at NNDC have responded to the crisis. Staff have all gone above and beyond for many weeks and especially so at the height of the crisis, designing response systems, delivering new services and helping out on the ground in the community. Our emergency helpline responded to thousands of calls, from those concerned about food supplies and prescription delivery, to those helping with benefits claims and business grants.

As we move into the recovery phase we know there is a long road ahead, especially when so much of our local economy is reliant on tourism. In the last week we have been able to source special equipment which we are now deploying to ‘fog’ public conveniences and children’s play areas. Our hand sanitisers have now been in place for a couple of weeks together with other measures.

For now I would like to end with a final thanks to everyone for the part they have played in helping to keep us as safe as possible thus far. Please remain vigilant careful and considerate of the concerns of others as we move forwards.

Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important link in the Test and Trace system The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread.

If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household. It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms.

Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.”

A Norfolk Local Outbreak Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others, Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus.

The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the first place. Norfolk and Waveney GP surgeries performing higher than average in GP patient survey

GP practices in Norfolk and Waveney have come out highly in the national annual survey of patient satisfaction.

Overall, they score higher than the national average in a range of important indicators such as helpful staff, access to appointments and satisfaction with their care.

The GP Patient Survey is an independent survey run by Ipsos MORI on behalf of NHS England. It is sent out to more than two million people across the UK annually. The survey results show how people feel about their GP practice. Scores can be analysed In the survey, GP practices in Norfolk and Waveney scored above average in the following areas:

• 91% found the receptionist helpful • 87% patients felt their health care professional recognised and/or understood their mental health needs • 84% described the overall experience of their GP surgery as good. • 79% felt they had enough support from local organisations to manage a long-term condition (or conditions)

• 78% of patients who have tried to use their GP practice website found it easy to access information or services. • 68% they found it easy to get through to their GP practice on the phone • 77% were happy with the types of appointments they were offered • 68% of patients rated their overall experience of making an appointment as good. • 66% were happy with the appointment times offered available • 68% were happy with how quickly they had received care

The results, above, are for all of Norfolk and Waveney’s GP practices together.

This year’s survey was completed just as the country was entering ‘lockdown’ because of Coronavirus and before many changes were made to health and care services in response to the global pandemic. Since the survey was carried out, many GP practices have transformed the way they operate, changing the ways that people can access help and advice.

Many have introduced online consultations and online booking systems and where this has been

introduced, many more people have had their health worries resolved more quickly either by advice online and over the phone or in person.

Dr Anoop Dhesi, a local GP and Chair of NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group said: “This is a fantastic achievement for our colleagues working in practices – both patient facing and behind the scenes. It is great to see that people’s experiences are so positive and as practices continue to adapt and move some of their services online it is reassuring to see that patients are appreciating this and finding it beneficial. Each and every one of our practices puts patients at the heart of what they do and the survey results evidence the hard work which they put in on a regular basis. These results are also testimony to the increase in partnership working as our colleagues at the CCG, local pharmacies, hospitals and community colleagues all work together to provide patient-centric care.”

New orthopaedic service at Cromer Hospital

A new service for hand and foot surgery has been set up at Cromer & District Hospital, as part of a plan to boost treatments for patients as services get back on track following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Patients are receiving day case treatment in the Muriel Thoms Day Procedure Unit, using injections of local anaesthetic, called a nerve block, to numb the area which avoids the need for a general anaesthetic. About eight patients are treated each week for conditions such as Dupuytren's disease, arthritis of the thumb (trapeziectomy) and various foot conditions related to the bone and soft tissue.

Matt Keeling, Deputy Divisional Operations Director for Surgery, said: “There has been a fantastic team effort to launch this new

orthopaedic surgery service at Cromer. It is proving popular with our patients who receive the best of both worlds: a friendly local service at Cromer, plus expert care from surgeons and anaesthetists visiting from our main site in Norwich.

“We are delivering more treatment sessions for patients at Cromer now than we were before the pandemic. This has meant adjusting the way in which we organise the building, making best use of the space to ensure social distancing and new procedures.”

Police warning as fraudsters make tax scam calls

Police are warning people of scammers claiming to be from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) tricking them into thinking they owe tax or debts and asking them to pay or purchase Google or Amazon gift cards.

Norfolk Constabulary has received three reports of victims being scammed by this method in Norfolk last week alone trying to claim a total of over £11,000.

In the first case, the victim, a man in his 30s from King’s Lynn, was phoned Thursday 9 July 2020 and told he owed outstanding tax and legal action would be taken if he did not

Another victim, in her 70s, in Great Yarmouth, was called Friday 10 July 2020 to say she owed £2,397.64 for specific tax years and asked to pay in cash or Google Play vouchers. A third victim, in her 30s, in Wymondham, received a call on the same day from someone claiming to be from tax fraud investigation to say she owed £1,999 and had purchased Amazon and Google gift cards and sent the codes to the fraudsters.

Chief Inspector Matt Dyson said: "We would like to make residents aware that they may be contacted via a phone call, a voicemail or text message to try to convince them they are being called by HMRC about unpaid tax, sometimes threatening legal action or arrest if it is not paid urgently.

Because of the pandemic, the children at Aldborough have missed lots of special events including a week away at a PGL activity centre. To make up for some of those, the marquee will be the centre of a Festival Fortnight for them, where the educational activities will include lots of forest school experiences, building and cooking on open fires, making rope swings, treasure hunts, pond dipping, making a green man using natural dyes, wacky races and film and photographic challenges. Also planned are a barbecue and a visit from an ice cream van. The fortnight will culminate in a dramatic and colourful leavers’ assembly, created by the year 6 children (with the help of their teachers) and filmed so their parents can enjoy the fun, too.

Throughout Festival Fortnight there will be plenty of hard work going on.

It’s not your fault... anymore by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

August is a barren month for the legal writer. It is also the ‘silly season’ when doubtful legal cases receive greater prominence than they deserve in the press. Add to that Covid-19 and there is much less than usual to write about this year. The Law Society Gazette has shrunk in size to smaller than the many parish magazines, with a lot of articles on lawyers’ mental health, working from home and the bleak prospects for the younger generation of lawyers. The rollercoaster of the Coronavirus emotions and mood swings has been labelled the ‘Coronacoaster’, and has affected even the most confident and balanced people.

Lockdown has brought financial and personal pressures, as well as more thinking-time and enforced ‘spending time with the family’. There have been increased levels of domestic violence across the social-spectrum. This in turn has lead to many more divorce enquiries. My matrimonial partner Rob Colwell is very busy.

One very positive development, in keeping with the mood of the times (what the Germans call the ‘zeitgeist’), is the move towards no-fault divorce. Much of my work relates to the intergenerational-dynamics of families, rather than spousal-strife. Although I am not a divorce lawyer, parents’ concerns for their children’s fragile marriages are a main focus when succession-planning.

The “no fault divorce” is to become law after decades of campaigning by lawyers and family justice professionals. So it is very good news that couples will soon be able divorce without having to find fault with one another. The requirement for couples to apportion blame is so firmly established that it can permeate every aspect of a separation, even when things started out amicably. Children are inevitably drawn into the blame game, with cruel long-term effects. Fault-based divorce law is as much of the 19th Century as women being unable to own property. Now, instead of finding blame, one spouse can apply for a divorce by making a statement of ‘irretrievable breakdown’ of marriage.

There will be a new minimum timeframe of six months from the application stage to the granting of a divorce, giving couples time to reflect and even change their minds. If reconciliation is not possible, there will be enough time to agree practical arrangements, most importantly for their children.

This must be so much better for the whole family and will not estrange grandparents from their former son-in-law or daughter-in-law.

At present, couples seeking a divorce in England and Wales must blame the other for the marriage breakdown. None of the grounds are conducive to future family happiness: adultery, unreasonable behaviour or, the rather

Victorian, desertion. Otherwise there must be a minimum of two years separation with consent, or 5 years’ separation, if such consent is withheld.

Now the Bill has received Royal Assent, it has become an Act of Parliament. It is likely to happen in 2021, once changes to systems and procedures have been implemented.

Tim Grimmer, Happisburgh helmsman, was walking along the beach at Sea Palling when he saw a young girl being swept out to sea on an inflatable toy closely followed by others on boards and inflatables. He called 999 immediately and asked for the Coastguard; Sea Palling and Happisburgh Lifeboats were paged and Tim remained on the beach updating the Coastguard of what was happening. The young girl was blown across the bay and out through the reefs. Luckily the people on the boards managed to reach her and, fighting the offshore wind, brought her back into the bay as Sea Palling lifeboat arrived on scene and helped all ashore. The young girl was very distressed by her experience.

This is a particularly challenging time for the RNLI. Income has decreased drastically so anything you are able to do to keep the RNLI afloat and save lives at sea will be greatly appreciated. The RNLI is not government funded. It is a volunteer service and survives on public financial support. Donations, the RNLI shop and the car park by the Esplanade bring in vital funds. Our mission is simple: to save lives. All our volunteers: boat crew, shore crew, shop helpers, education team, sea safety advisors and many others all work towards that single end. Teamwork is critical. New volunteers bring a wide range of skills and experience and are always welcome. It has been called upon to launch several times. Many of our volunteer crew have also been giving of their time to the NHS and local action groups helping those most in need and those shielding within our community.

Time for Sea Change

“It makes me feel violated, belittled and excluded; as if who I am is misunderstood, and that I belong to an evil group” Said Elizabeth (not her real name), who is Mixed Race and lives and works in North Norfolk. She is describing how repeated unintentional racism makes her feel. The times, for example, when a colleague, who is basically kind and did not mean to offend, talked openly in the workplace about being afraid because they were lost in an area inhabited by a lot of Black people. Or, when a colleague refused to collaborate because they are “not working in the cotton fields you know!”. These and other frequent slights add up and tear down Elizabeth at her very core, affecting her mental health. And sadly, this is typical treatment meted out by both strangers and friends on Black, Mixed Race and Ethnic Minority people in North Norfolk. Where white people make up 98.6% of resident population. A percentage that is increasing as people of colour move away to live in areas where they are welcomed and valued.

But most white residents here, like myself before I read ‘Why I no Longer Talk to White People about Race’ by Reni Eddo-Lodge, do not understand what it is like to be treated in this way purely because of looks and cultural heritage, which should be a source of pride and honour, not shame and exclusion.

We think we are not a part of the problem because we would not dream of saying. “You should be hung(sic)! That’s how I feel about them and I’m going to let them know”. This was shouted at Elizabeth in a North Norfolk shop about a year ago while onlookers did nothing. Deeply painful abuse at a whole other level which ended in a conviction.

I was devastated to learn from talking to my Black, Mixed Race and Ethnic Minority neighbours, that white people stare, make comments, follow people in stores, refuse to interview people for jobs, address people by the n-word, and do not let their children play with children who are not white.

Cushing’s disease

As pet owners we all understand how important it is to be watching for signs of disease so this week we focus on a particular disease seen in dogs and called Cushing’s disease.

What is Cushing’s disease?

Also called hyperadrenocorticism, Cushing’s disease is caused by an overproduction of cortisol, a naturally occurring steroid hormone. This overproduction is usually due to a benign tumour of either the pituitary gland (a gland found at the base of the brain) or one of the adrenal glands (found in the abdomen, next to each kidney). Although this sounds a little scary, it’s a disease we know a lot about and can control well to give pets a normal life.

What are the signs of Cushing’s disease in dogs?

Often dogs will show excessive thirst and frequent urination, increased appetite and

therefore weight gain. Some owners may notice that their dog starts to get a pot-bellied appearance, hair loss and thin skin. Other symptoms which can be seen are excessive panting, muscle loss or weakness, lethargy and increased frequency of urinary and skin infections.

How is Cushing’s disease diagnosed in dogs?

If your dog is suspected to have Cushing’s syndrome your vet will perform blood tests specific for Cushings disease and known as either an ACTH stimulation test or a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test.

How is Cushing’s disease treated?

Cushing’s disease will progress if left untreated and can increase the risk of your dog developing other, potentially serious, conditions for which treatment can be intensive and costly. These include high blood pressure, diabetes, pancreatitis and increased susceptibility to infection. However, Cushing’s disease can

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club has not been active during Lockdown due to the ages of the members. However, with the reduction of restrictions the members are planning to fundraise again in the area. However, the Club will not be collecting for one major cause; instead, they ask for requests from local organisations who need funds towards a special project. The Lions Club does not have vast resources because one of the rules of the Lions organisation is that most, if not all, of the year’s fundraising is distributed at the end of the year. In addition, the membership of the Club is at present only eight people.

We start this new fundraising year in July and carry on to the following June. The Club is examining the possibility of using Card Readers to simplify fundraising and reduce the amount of cash being handled, again, in line with the conditions imposed by the Covid19 virus. The residents of North Norfolk have been very generous in the past, which we greatly appreciate, and we hope that the public will continue to support our fundraising in future.

Although Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club is small we do have an active social side and are always on the lookout for new members.

Fundraising is mostly conducted at local supermarkets and we also take part in the Sheringham and Cromer carnivals, the fundraising day at Mannington Hall in September, where we run Tombolas and do a Pub Dash just before Christmas. Of course, most of these events have been cancelled for 2020 so we do need to try other ways of raising money. Well during lockdown everybody started their own vegetable gardens and of course we had a little head start here at the Grove. The Senior Partners John and Ann enjoyed the balmy early summer weather and the fruit and vegetable section have never looked so good. In particular the redcurrants have had a sterling year, so it looks like this redcurrant and red onion relish will be a firm favourite for the rest of the year!

Ingredients 2 medium small red onions, chopped 1 red pepper, seeded and chopped 2 tsp olive oil 2 red chillies, seeded and chopped 2 large garlic cloves, chopped 1 knob fresh ginger, chopped 200ml red wine vinegar 140g muscovado or demerara sugar

1 tsp five-spice powder 200g redcurrants, stripped from stalks

Fry the onions with the red pepper and the oil, 5-8 mins over a high heat. Remove from the pan and set aside.

Put half the vinegar, the chilli, garlic and ginger into the same pan. Bring to the boil then simmer for 2-3 mins, then add the onions and pepper plus the remaining vinegar, all the sugar, spice and 1 tsp salt. Bring to the boil then bubble away for about 5 mins until thickened.

Add redcurrants and simmer for about 5 mins more, or until they have burst, but still have some shape and the liquid is syrupy.

Remove and pour into a large heatproof jar; cover and seal while hot.

The Briston Organ Shows have, of course, had to be stopped since the current Covid problems occurred, but we are looking forward to getting them started again as soon as possible, and to that end we are already booking provisional dates for next year at the Copeman Centre at Briston, and contacting your favourite players to get them lined up for some great evenings of live music featuring the latest digital organs and keyboards. For those of you who have not been before, we feature top UK and international players performing all styles of music, from pops to classics. Latin to big band, jazz to TV and film themes and it is all played live!

The Copeman Centre is a comfortable venue in the heart of Briston, just a few miles south of Holt, and has very comfortable seating, good acoustics, loads of free parking right outside the door, and wide level access which is idea for disabled visitors. Holt Festival extends the Sir John Hurt and Sworders Art Prizes entry period due to artists’ enthusiasm in lockdown Holt Festival has announced that the entry period for this year’s Sir John Hurt and Sworders Art Prizes has now been extended until midnight on 1 September 2020.

Open to all artists over 16 years of age, the winner of the Sir John Hurt Art Prize will receive a cheque for £1,750 and their winning entry will be exhibited at the prestigious Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, Norfolk. The Sworders Art Prize is specifically aimed at younger artists aged between 16 and 23 years inclusive and the winner of this competition will receive a cheque for £750 together with a commission free exhibition at The Gallery, a new contemporary art space in Holt, Norfolk. James Glennie, Holt Festival Fine Art Director, said:“The solitude of lockdown has provided quiet inspiration for many artists. It has been a time of innovation and productivity and we are delighted with the many and varied entries that we have received so far for this year’s Sir John

Hurt and Sworders Art Prizes.”

Glennie added: “Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, we were forced to cancel Holt Festival 2020 and its popular Exhibition of Shortlisted Works which were due to take place in July. However, given the artists’ enthusiasm, we have subsequently extended the entry deadline for the Sir John Hurt and Sworders Art Prizes until midnight on 1 September 2020 by which time it is hoped it will be possible to reschedule the Exhibition of Shortlisted Works.” Entries for this year’s Sir John Hurt Art Prize will be judged by art and architectural historian, Nichola Johnson; curator and publisher, David Case; and award-winning artist, Susan Gunn. And the Sworders Art Prize entries will be judged by Susan Gunn and publisher and gallery owner, Adrian Hill. Submissions must be suitable for wall-hanging and can comprise various art forms including painting, drawing, photography, textiles, printmaking, mosaic, sculpture, collage etc.

Warning from Trading Standards as rogue roofers scam residents out of £17,000

As lockdown eases Norfolk County Council’s Trading Standards are urging residents to beware of rogue traders who are turning up on doorsteps to scam people out of thousands of pounds.

Last week alone three residents near Norwich lost more than £17,000 to fraudsters who had told their victims that they had ‘seen problems’ with their homes, including cracked and unsafe chimneys. The incidents in Hellesdon, Sprowston and Catton saw three men pressuring residents into agreeing to work by claiming that urgent repairs were needed to prevent chimneys falling or collapsing.

After quoting prices of several thousand pounds and completing a small amount of work, claims were then made that more issues had been found, and the price for the job increased dramatically. At this point the fraudsters said they needed payment in full to buy materials or hire equipment. But once the money was handed over they left the work incomplete and never returned.

Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnerships, said: “It is disgusting that as we are coming out of lockdown so too are the unscrupulous fraudsters trying to scam people in our communities. Last week the fraudsters struck near Norwich but they could be moving to other areas of Norfolk so I’m urging people to be on the lookout. The simple message is that we should never agree to have work done by somebody who is ‘just passing’ or take their word that the work needs to be done at all. Our Norfolk County Council Trading Standards team recommends that we should only deal with reputable companies you have researched and chosen yourself to work on your home.”

In the recent incidents two of the three males involved are described as mid-twenties in age and are believed to be using a white Ford Transit with ladders on the roof.

This year’s Norfolk Open Studios, one of the most successful schemes of its kind in the country, has been cancelled

The award-winning event was originally due to take place across May and June but with the lockdown in force organisers decided to postpone the event until the autumn.

Now, the decision has been taken to cancel this year’s Norfolk Open Studios with organisers looking forward to 2021 in order to protect the safety of artists and visitors.

Ros Dixon, Norfolk Open Studios administrator said: “When we cancelled the original dates for Norfolk Open Studios 2020 back in March, we had hoped we might be able to postpone until the autumn.

“Unfortunately, it turns out we are still in uncertain times. Despite some of the recent relaxations, it would be extremely difficult for many artists to welcome public to their studios, often in their own homes, safely. The scheme is also designed to get visitors exploring the county and we felt putting communities at risk in this way, would not be appropriate right now. As a result we have decided that the most sensible thing to do is to cancel Norfolk Open Studios for this year, and look forward instead to 2021. We were delighted to still be able to celebrate some of our amazing artists by hosting Norfolk Opens Studios 2020 online earlier this month, and we are happy to say this is still

Ordinarily, Norfolk Open Studios would see around 400 artists opening their studio doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work and practice, normally attracting 30,000+ visitors. Internationally renowned artists as well as artists new to the scheme take part each year and for many, it offers the opportunity to join a wider community of artists which helps to bring their work to new and diverse audiences, opening up discussions about their practice. Earlier this month Norfolk Open Studios offered an online version of the scheme with more than 55 artists bringing their studios to life with virtual tours, video demonstrations audio recordings, photos and filmed stories. No Fault Divorce Bill Receives Royal Assent!

The biggest change in divorce law in our lifetime is now set to become a reality as the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill receives Royal Assent, first promised by the government in April 2018. Family lawyers up and down the country are delighted that the bill has reached the end of its parliamentary journey after years of campaigning.

The change means that couples in England and Wales will no longer have to assign blame in order to be granted a divorce. Something which could help reduce conflict between separating couples and encourage families to look to the future rather than taking part in the "blame game".

So what is current divorce process?

The main piece of legislation dealing with divorce is the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. In order to obtain a divorce you need to prove that the marriage has been broken down irretrievably. This can be proven by relying upon one or more of the following facts:

1. Adultery

2. "Unreasonable behaviour" 3. Desertion

4. 2 years separation with consent

5. 5 years separation

As you will see, three of the facts are based on a period of separation. If this does not apply to your circumstances you must rely upon

either adultery or "unreasonable behaviour". Unreasonable behaviour is the ground that is most commonly cited on divorce. Due to the very nature of these facts, the system is fault-based and relies upon one party apportioning blame to the other.

How will no fault divorce change the system?

Instead of having to apportion blame, couples will be able to simply say that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. This can be done jointly or individually. Under the new system, there must be a minimum six-month period between the lodging of a petition to the divorce being made final.

When will this come into effect?

It will take some time for things to get up and running as there will need be a number of changes to the rules, procedure and forms so that no fault divorce can be implemented. It is hoped that couples will be able to obtain a no fault divorce from Autumn 2021.

However, there are those who remain concerned about the changes and how the process will actually work in terms of the six-month notice Summer period. The Law Society have suggested that the six month period should

begin when the divorce application is received by the respondent rather than when the divorce is applied for. They argue that this would ensure that the couple are on the same page from the start and would have sufficient time to seek legal and financial advice. They have asked the government to consider their concerns in and it may be that the finer details will be tweaked before it is fully implemented.

The café bar at a popular seaside theatre is taking its cue for a comeback. It is likely to be a while before the lockdown safety curtain is lifted from the Sheringham Little Theatre’s stage.

The café opened on July 14 and is safely serving snacks and drinks – to enable loyal customers to start re-visiting the popular Hub community meeting point. Things will be different, as the theatre strives to revive its arts-flavoured watering hole.

There will be: • A limited menu – with home-made scones and cakes, sausage rolls, hot and cold drinks • Restricted opening hours – 10am to noon, Tuesday to Saturday • Fewer tables, catering for 27 people, to maintain social distancing • Card payment only. No cash.

The Club has teamed up with RPT, the Register of Tennis Professionals, the global leader in training coaches, to train up eight new coaches for the Club on a fast track intensive programme, run by RPT Director, Adrian Rattenbury.

The new coaches will receive the RPT Mark of a Pro Qualification qualifying them to give individual lessons and then over the summer will train for the higher LTA Level 3 qualification to be awarded in early September.

Sheringham girls sing in virtual children’s choir

Two children from Sheringham have taken part in “The Blessing – Kids� sung by a virtual choir of children from all over the UK. The original song "The Blessing" was written by Chris Brown, Cody Carnes, Kari Jobe and Steven Furtick and performed in the USA. This was soon followed by a UK version, where singers from 65 churches across Britain contributed on-line from their homes during lockdown, and the song was professionally "stiched together" to create the finished rendition. The Allstars Kids Club in the UK then seized upon the opportunity to perform the same song using contributions from hundreds of children all over the country, and even some from overseas. Sheringham mum Vicki Harrison, part of the town’s Lighthouse Community Church, heard about the venture and applied for two of her children, Immi and Bella, to take part. They were amongst only a handful from Norfolk. Vicki said “The girls listened to the backing music on a tablet through headphones and I recorded them on my iphone so no special equipment was required. It was a very simple process, but we had no idea if they would use the clip or not. I am not aware of any other local children taking part.“Immi has been singing with our church band for about a year and Bella has been in the school choir since she was a toddler. They both love to sing and when I saw the advert for children singers they jumped at the opportunity.� The song was released on You Tube on Sunday May 10, and has been well received nationally. Immi said “it was a really good to do our bit to help and encourage other people�. Bella said “It was a really fun music session - we didn’t even need any special equipment�

Quality of Coaches Both RPT and the Club are thrilled with the quality of trainee coaches on the course. It includes a player on the international circuit (Marcus Meadows), a Norfolk country player (Tom Fisher), two players in the Norfolk Junior Squad (Jack Seton and Sian Stoppani), three LTA Level 1 coaches who have been apprenticed to the Club over the last year (Jonny Lawrence, Alex Meyrick, Jim Pallister) and club member, gymnast and PE teacher Lisa Stickells, daughter of Icarus Hines, and currently attached to Cromer Academy. The Club is delighted too that for the first time it will have two female coaches with the top coaching qualification – and is writing to Judy Murray (mother of Andy Murray), who has long campaigned for more quality female coaches.
