The Sheringham Independent August 2021

In the Loop with Sheringham Town Council

The Councillors at Sheringham Town Council (STC) are pleased to have the opportunity to continue with this column as a way of keeping residents up to date with news from your Town Council.

Since our last article, Ben Bix (pictured) has joined the Council as Town Clerk. Ben is originally from Mannington, and has joined us from Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, in Surrey. At the Council meeting on 20 July, Councillors decided to continue to understand whether a Pedestrian Friendly Zone would be feasible for the town and will be commissioning a study from the County Council. Councillors also agreed to seek funding for a vehicle activated sign that displays the speed of an approaching vehicle. If the vehicle exceeds the speed limit a ‘slow down’ message is shown, once the limit is exceeded by 10mph the speed is no longer shown. Continued on page 4...

A Note from the editor

Tribute to Rob Craig (aka Robbie and Robin)

Dear Reader Well, now we have dried out a bit perhaps we can get on with Summer. The predicted ‘staycation’ is certainly keeping the town busy and is nice to see our local traders doing well. There are lots of charity events, village fetes and activities happening, so even if you can’t get away there are lots of things to go and do while enjoying the sun and our lovely county. Whilst enjoying the weather please remember the advice on water safety, the RNLI website: https://rnli.org/safety gives lots of advice on keeping safe, do take time to have a look. Whatever you are doing, enjoy your August magazine. Keep safe and well. Jo – Editor.

Sheringham lost one of its most colourful characters on 11th June this year.

Rob Craig was a familiar figure to be seen striding along the seafront and in the woods with his singular dress sense and ever-changing hair styles and colours. A fitness enthusiast, well known for his Nordic Walking group and always a cheery word to those who met him along the way in his distinctive Yorkshire accent.

Rob first came to Sheringham on family holidays as a child and settled here in 1987. He held several jobs in fitness including working in Norwich at The No1 Gym Club, gym instructor and lifeguard at the Splash Leisure Centre, offering mobile fitness sessions with Wynn Nurse for NNDC.

Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines. Month Copy deadline Publishing date September Tuesday 31st August Friday 10th September October Tuesday 28th September Friday 8th October November Tuesday 26th October Friday 5th November

He was a member of North Norfolk Beach Runners for many years and maintained an active lifestyle until his health worsened.

Dunstable Arms Bottle Bank

He had suffered from a serious heart condition for many years, the reason he was so keen to keep fit, but his condition deteriorated at Easter, and he sadly died 3 months later. He leaves his wife, Annie, brother Will, niece Katie and nephew Sam and 3 great nieces.

The full mixed glass bottle bank at the unoccupied Dunstable Arms has been replaced.

There is no sticker stating "mixed" & nothing to indicate that the collection benefits the West Runton scouts. A replacement has been arranged with Helen Cardani, the troop leader.

Rob’s cheerful greeting and positive outlook on life will be sorely missed and Sheringham has lost yet another of it’s true characters.

New Radio Station Set to Hit the Airwaves

Daytime 07736 516644 Evening 01263 663042

It’s been almost a year since the demise of North Norfolk Radio and since then, there has been a huge gap in the airwaves above Overstrand, Sidestrand, Mundesley, Northrepps and Southrepps. That gap will soon be filled by a brand-new local community radio station called Poppyland Radio.

Sheringham Day Centre Re-opens

Leap-frogging off the back of a lockdown initiative which saw a superlocal weekly broadcast in Northrepps, a small team has been established and are working hard to get a bigger, stronger, more professional outfit up and running. With space being offered by the Belfry Centre for Music & Arts in Overstrand, there has already been interest by people wanting to host folk, brass, soul, local history, smallholding, school and classical shows.

Age Concern North Norfolk has re-opened its doors to older folk and their carers, on Friday July 16th.

We are delighted to be able to offer our friendly Day Service in addition to our Meals on Heels service, after closure since January 2021, due to the pandemic.

Plans are well under way for an online launch in September, so this is a shout-out to anyone who’s interested or would like to get involved.

We are located at 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham NR26 8DZ and you are very welcome to come along for a cooked lunch and some activities from Tuesday to Friday.

■ What would you like to hear on Poppyland Radio? ■ What interests, skills or stories do you have to share with the community? ■ Do you have a great idea for a show? ■ Are you a techie? Can you edit audio? We need you! ■ Are you a local business, school, attraction or special interest group that would like to feature in a show? ■ Can you offer technical expertise or broadcast experience? ■ Are you the next John Peel, Greg James or Zoe Ball? Presenters are needed! ■ And most importantly, would you like to advertise or sponsor the station?

Booking in advance is essential – please make sure that you phone Serena Waite-Shores Alison on 01263 821188 if you are interested in further details.

The Day Centre has been refurbished to make it more Covid Secure and we look forward to your visit soon.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offe fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

The Council acknowledge and are supportive of the wider public benefits that have been delivered from the site through these uses of Kellingside Woods, Holt. John Hancock This decision will deliver

a sustainable and regulated future for Archery and Air Rifles on the site.

Both NNDC & the landowners wish to move forward together, as post-Covid facilities which help both the local community and tourism will be essential.

Mr Hancock said, “I am really pleased that we have come to a positive conclusion. The site can continue to provide both mental and physical help to those who need it.

Post Covid, we as communities need to help each other and I hope that in some small way the site has done this.”

The site offers an archery and air rifle range. Anyone can use the site and for a small fee can use the site’s equipment, receive safety advice and tuition. Visitors can bring their

Air rifle range at Kellingside Woods

own equipment and pay a nominal fee for all day use of the site which covers the site’s expenses. The site is run as a not-for-profit concern.

Mr Hancock hopes to improve the site further to include a sensory garden and provide a quiet space for visitors to wander and feel in touch with nature.

Cromer Community & Hospital Friends

To celebrate the forthcoming opening of the North Norfolk Macmillan Cancer Unit at Cromer Hospital, we are holding a fantastic raffle to raise funds for vital equipment needed for the Unit.

The prize is a unique, stunning piece of art (worth around £1900) painted by renowned and talented artist Samuel Thomas. The painting also features an inspirational quote of hope.

We are so lucky to have this unit opening soon on our doorstep which will make such a difference to the lives of cancer patients who have previously had to travel to Norwich for treatment. Cancer touches all our lives and will affect 1 in 2 of us so by buying one of these raffle tickets you will be helping our local hospital, make people's lives easier during a challenging time and have a chance of winning this wonderful prize.

Tickets are £10 per entry and the draw will take place on Tuesday, 31st August 2021. Please support and share.

Sheringham Horticultural Society

Sheringham Horticultural Society has been in existence for nearly one hundred years. We have a large membership and our own allotments at Beeston Regis. Needless to say we have been on a sojourn for the last eighteen months.

can spend a considerable amount of time walking around the gardens exploring all the hidden areas. As you do this, you will also discover an incredible amount of sculpture and artistic creations that adds to the structure of the garden.

In July as a membership, we were very pleased to have followed up a talk in 2019, with an excellent visit to Graham and Sally Watts two-acre garden at Dale Farm, Dereham. Graham and Sally who are both retired professional horticulturalists, open their garden for the National Garden Scheme and various other visits.

Set on the edge of the old A47 road and in an urban area, this two-acre garden, with a spring fed pond, that runs through the middle of the grounds, is well worth a visit. Upon retiring from their respective jobs, Graham and Sally searched a wide area of the country looking for a suitable project, before settling on Dale Farm.

With their knowledge and expertise, this garden has been transformed into a utopia of wonderment and amazement. With over 1000 different plant varieties, all tied together with a magnificent lawn and grass paths. You

! "

Finally, when you get bored with that, there is the pond and an abundance of wildlife to find. The water is stocked with rudd and grass carp to keep the weed down, and the water attracts kingfishers, water voles and, dare I say, otters that have taken their toll on the ducks and moor hens this year.

Members and friends of the Society enjoyed an incredible afternoon together, the first in over 18months, getting back with old friends and enjoying not only the gardens, plants and wildlife but also the hospitality, and home cooked cakes produced by Sally. An amazing garden, created by a truly delightful hard-working couple.

We are now able to tell you that our two remaining evening meetings this year will be going ahead, our venue is St Joseph’s Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham and will commence at 7pm for 7.30pm start. The first is on Thursday 16th September with an illustrated talk on the Cromer Shoals Chalk Beds, a marine conservation zone.

Our final meeting of this year is on Thursday 14th of October 2021 the A-Z of bulbs by Johnny Walkers who recently retired from Taylors Bulbs.

These meetings are open to members and nonmembers, if you wish to know more about SHS and membership please contact the secretary on sheringhamhorticulturalsociety @yahoo.com Chris Wright

When is ‘next of kin’ not enough? by Jennifer Taylor, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

Whilst you may anticipate that your spouse, children, or other close relatives can access your finances or have a say in your medical care should you become mentally and/or physically incapacitated, this is not necessarily the case.

Next of kin

Many services will ask for details of your next of kin. There are no clear legal rules as to who you can name as your next of kin, and they do not necessarily have to be a blood relative. Naming a person as your next of kin does not grant them any legal rights or responsibilities. Rather, organisations ask for their details, so they know who to keep informed about your care.

Legal position

All of your affairs, financial and medical, must be kept confidential and may only be released to certain persons, in certain circumstances. The law is designed to help everyone retain their independence for as long as possible. However, later in life, you might need additional help. For example, during the early stages of dementia when the decline of mental capacity happens gradually but you can still understand and make your own choices.

How to ensure your next of kin does have legal rights

One way to give a person legal rights and empower them to deal with your affairs during your lifetime is by appointing them under a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). You can arrange LPAs at any time, so long as you have mental capacity. LPAs should therefore be created in advance rather than leaving it until your health deteriorates.

There are two types of LPA: •

Health and welfare, which authorises your attorneys to make decisions about your medical treatment and health care, and; • Property and financial affairs, which authorises your attorneys to make decisions about your property and finances.

What happens if you don’t have an LPA and lose mental capacity?

If you lose mental capacity, and you have not made an LPA, then then someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to become your deputy.

There are several reasons why LPAs are a better option than a deputyship:

• An LPA allows a person to choose who they want to make decisions for them,

but a person has no control over who is appointed as their deputy.

• A deputyship is more expensive.

• Deputyships for health and welfare are rarely ordered by the court, whereas an attorney can be appointed under an LPA to make decisions with respect to a person’s health and welfare.

• It can take a long time to apply for a deputyship in comparison to making an LPA.

Without valid documents in place, no person, including your next of kin, can make these decisions for you during your lifetime.

No. 293 shows the Stocchi theme, defined thus: an immobile plug on a potential or actual flight-square would permit several mates, but these are separated without duals by each unit in turn that does play to that square. There are very few examples with 4 thematic variations, and this one with no white Ps is particularly pleasing. Difficulty 3.

ONS crime stats publication 22 July 2021 (Year ending March 2021)

The latest crime figures for England and Wales have been published by the Office of National Statistic (ONS) covering the 12-month period ending March 2021.

Crime in Norfolk reduced during this period by around 6% with continued significant reductions in residential and business burglary, theft, criminal damage, robbery and violence offences where injury occurred. Chief Constable Paul Sanford said: "It's pleasing to see crime levels have reduced during this period. However, this latest round of crime statistics is the first to take into account all national lockdowns during the coronavirus pandemic and it's important we understand this when reviewing the figures.

Ready to make a move? We understand that moving home can be both a happy and sad experience. That’s why our team are ready to work with you and look after your every need from full market exposure to discreet one-off buyer introductions. It’s currently the best time to sell in years, so however you want us to move you, we’re here to help.

"Some of the crimes which have the biggest impact and matter most to our communities continue to reduce significantly with burglary, vehicle crime and thefts all down by more than 30%. It isn't surprising to see this trend, given the conditions we've been living under in that 12-month period, with people spending a significant amount of time at home.

"A reduction in crime is always good news of course and overall, in Norfolk we're in a good position, but we know these latest statistics are, in part, driven by the impact of the pandemic. We continue to be concerned about the increase of domestic abuse which accounts for the majority of violence against the person offences, stalking & harassment cases. These crimes are often under-reported so while rises can be concerning, it's equally encouraging to see victims reaching out for help.

Please give us a call to discuss how we can get you moving

"Public order offences, as well as reflective of the pandemic, also continue to be influenced by our investment and efforts in improving our compliance with national crime recording standards, a trend I expect to continue for at least the next 12 months.

"Norfolk remains a very safe place to live. However, with the lifting of coronavirus restrictions, I believe there is a degree of inevitability that certain crime types will increase over the coming months. I would like to reassure communities that we're working harder than ever before to meet their concerns and needs, protecting the people of Norfolk, preventing crime and bringing offenders to justice.” www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

concerned member of the public meant they too were caught and soon on their way to join their mother. A successful conclusion not only for us but also the concerned member of the public, the mum and kittens and the volunteers at Venture Farm.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Stephanie receives many calls from people asking for help with stray or feral cats and this is one area where we can only give limited assistance. We will happily loan a trap for the cat to be taken to the vets to be neutered and in most instances also pay for this to be done. Unfortunately, we cannot help with the catching. However most people are only too willing to help if it resolves the problem.

A recent call from a lady who had found a feral mum and her kittens is such a case. The mum needed to be neutered and the kittens caught so that they could be found new homes. Ideally the cat also needed to be relocated as the place she was living was not ideal. Most people are aware now that Cats Protection veterinary guidelines advise that feral cats should not be confined but neutered and released either back to their original site or another suitable alternative. Because we would not be able to take the mother cat in Stephanie contacted another local charity, Venture Farm, who have excellent facilities and a specially designated area for feral cats to live, and they agreed to take mum and kittens into their care once mum had been neutered and blood tested. The lady borrowed a trap from us and caught the mother cat almost immediately, taking her straight to the vets for the operation and treatment and then on to Venture Farm. The kittens went to ground for two days but a call from another

Cats react differently when taking up residence in cat pens. Some are quite happy to sit in their unit watching the world go by, but others do not appreciate being confined. We therefore try to ensure they receive any treatment needed so that they can be put up for adoption once their vet has given them a clean bill of health. Being in a new loving home and receiving lots of loving care is the best place for any cat. This is especially true with kittens and although some of ours do take up residence in our pens, many go into the home of one of our fosterers. Whether in the home or in one of our pens, they do receive lots of hands-on contact with their carers. It is, however, vitally important that they go to their new homes as soon as possible to enable them to adapt to having more space and getting used to different sounds. It is also a special time for their new family, one they will not experience again. A time to bond and enjoy this new mutual companionship. Therefore, as long as our kittens are healthy, they will have their first vaccination and be chipped at 9 weeks and leave for their new homes shortly afterwards. Their second vaccination and neutering (at the appropriate time) will be paid for by the branch at one of

This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

In the space of 2 days, I have had 2 calls concerning disturbed nests, luckily the mothers were with their young. The first case was a summer house in North Walsham being dismantled there were 6 new-borns (as such are called urchins), taking the dry leaves that were with them, they are now in an outside hut.

The second case, I had a call from a couple at Stalham who were in the process of moving and on moving a plank near a wall discovered a circle of moss, they covered it over again until I could dash over with thick gloves, so as not to get my scent on it. There was a lovely nest with mum and 5 young approx. 2 weeks old, as their eyes were now coming open, picking up the whole nest they are now also safely enclosed in an outside hut.

David Barber and Mel Ashcroft Exhibition

If you missed the exhibition of David Barber and Mel Ashcroft’s work at the Oddfellows Hall, you missed a treat. The two local artists, who are well known in Artists Mel and David Sheringham and far beyond, teamed up to give the public a glimpse into their world and be on hand to talk about their work.

Mel, whose quirky crabs can be seen all around town, not only had her familiar comical crustaceans on show, but also some wonderful black and white portraits of famous faces. She described her pleasure at being commissioned to create portraits of customers’ family members and how much she had enjoyed talking to visitors to the exhibition about her work.

David had works in several different media on show. There were large canvases, one in particular depicting

‘Sins, Proverbs and Idioms’ (pictured) which would keep you guessing and discovering new elements to enjoy for years, all painted in

Mel’s black and white portraits

David’s ‘Sins, Proverbs and Idioms’

meticulous detail. Another work showed ‘The Battle Against Covid’, a reminder, perhaps, that the war is not yet won? It turns out that David is something of a master of stitchwork, which he told me he

has done since his teenage years. One piece, ‘Buzzard’, beautifully intricate, took over 2000 hours to complete.

There were original pieces of art for sale as well as very reasonably priced prints and genuinely something to suit every taste.

Let’s hope it is not too long before we have another chance to see these talented artists’ work again.

The Hive Café & Gardens at Wells Community Hospital

Additional Parking Provision Made for Sheringham and Cromer

With large numbers of staycation visitors and day trippers expected to visit the North Norfolk Coast over the coming weeks of the school summer holidays, North Norfolk District Council has considered how it can provide additional parking capacity in Cromer and Sheringham.

Very strong numbers of bookings for holiday accommodation and pop-up campsites, mean that the district can expect an increase in the requirement for parking provision. The additional parking arrangements will be open from 10:00am until 19:00pm from Saturday 24 July

Cromer - Runton Road car park With the cancellation of the Cromer Carnival due to COVID, parking can be provided on the Runton Road car park, including the Carnival Field. Visitors will be directed to long-stay parking at this location from major approach roads into the town – such as the Norwich, Holt and Runton Road, which the council will signpost through additional signage. We will provide additional signage at both The Meadow and Cadogan Road car parks advising of additional parking at Runton Road to direct visitors to when these car parks are full.

Car parking charges Standard car parking charges will apply at these three car parks as displayed on the car park boards.

Additional parking at the council offices on Holt Road In addition, on Saturdays and Sundays and the August Bank Holiday Monday (30 August), the District Council’s offices car park at Holt Road will be open for public parking on a pay and display basis, providing additional parking to serve the town.

Sheringham - Beeston Hall School cricket field Identifying additional parking to serve large numbers of visitors to the town has been a challenge. After extensive enquiries, the council has been pleased to make arrangements to lease the cricket field at the Beeston Hall School. They will provide additional parking from 24 July to 4 September. Parking at this location will be free. Visitors using this facility will walk into Sheringham via several routes or catch regular bus services from outside the cricket field to Sheringham and Cromer or further afield to Weybourne, Blakeney and Wells via the Coasthopper service.

Signage to this seasonal facility will be provided in the council’s car parks in Sheringham to direct visitors to this facility when other car parks in the town are full.

Other brands need to be pressed to remove as much moisture as possible before using, and to be honest, anything that saves me time is a winner.

Arm yourself with some Tamari (a type of soy sauce) as it pairs as a flavour so well and is an excellent cooking ingredient. The other secret is marinating; the longer you give it the better the outcome, but if you’re pushed for time, 10 minutes will do.

Totally Tofoo!

Hear me out… Tofu is an incredible ingredient; versatile, affordable and really good for you.

I know it seems a little weird, and I used to think that until I actually tried cooking with it.

It is an amazing protein source, takes up flavours well, has a wonderful texture and once you’ve learned a couple of tricks for preparing it, I promise you, you will want to use it again and again!

I went on a similar journey recently with lentils, and they are now one of my main ingredients.

We all have a responsibility to feed ourselves well and choosing to eat plant based at least a couple of times a week is so good for your gut health, not to mention your heart. I only use the Tofoo brand, simply because it has the best texture, flavours and is already pressed so is simpler to prepare.

This salad is a great blend of interesting textures and tastes, combining sweet and sour, crunchy and soft, and is incredibly filling and satisfying. The recipe below feeds two hungry people, or three moderately hungry people.

In terms of jazzing up your summer salads this takes some beating! If you’ve never braved the tofu, now is the time.

Baked Tofu Super Salad

1 pack Tofoo Smoked Tamari Balsamic vinegar Olive oil Garlic salt Smoked paprika Onion salt Cornflour Salad leaves Pumpkin, Sesame and Sunflower seeds (enough to cover the bottom of your frying pan) Cucumber, tomato, peppers, spring onions, all chopped

1 eating apple, cored and chopped Chopped cornichons Sprouted seeds or cress Handful fresh mint and parsley leaves, chopped finely

Start by marinating your tofu; remove from packet and gently squeeze out any excess liquid, then chop into small cubes.

Place in large bowl, and sprinkle on some splashes of tamari and balsamic vinegar, a small slug of olive oil, then add in a good heaped tsp smoked paprika and a good dusting of garlic and onion salt and stir well. Cover and leave to marinate.

Preheat your oven to 180 ° and dust your tofu with a little cornflour, then transfer your tofu to a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper and put in the oven for approx. 15 – 20 mins, keeping an eye on it so it doesn’t burn (you want it a little crispy on the outside)

Meanwhile, place your seeds in a non-stick frying pan on a moderate heat and gently toast, tossing occasionally and being careful not to burn them for about 5 mins.

Add in a few splashes of both tamari and balsamic vinegar and stir to coat. Continue until the liquid has evaporated off, then place into a bowl to cool.

Prepare your salad, mixing well. Top with the toasted seeds and baked tofu and dress with a little olive oil. Carolyn Burn

New Theatre Project Comes to The Venue

The Venue Community and Arts Centre in Holt is soon to host a theatre show and hopes to offer theatre to the people of Holt on a regular footing. The centre in Holt has given the venture the thumbs up which will see the acclaimed Stage Direct amateur dramatics group take centre stage for two nights in September.

The long-awaited arrival of Stage Direct amateur drama group’s next exciting production is almost upon us. Featuring a double bill of comedy, comprising two one act comedies performed back-to-back. (But of course, with an interval in-between). Now we are entering post Covid times, we can announce we can bring this feast of comedy to the stage for your entertainment.

The first is called “If I Were You” written by Cromer man and amateur dramatics enthusiast David Starling, and the second comedy is called “Dedicated Sorrowers”, a published comedy, written by Sheringham man and Chairperson of Stage Direct amateur drama group, Nigel Manson. The shows will also be produced and directed by the same said duo.

Nigel said “We’ve been waiting in the wings a long time for this opportunity to arise, and are delighted that we have been given this marvellous opening to show the people of Holt what Stage Direct are about”

David said, “Like every other drama group, Stage Direct have been eager to be able to tread the boards again to entertain the masses”. As a first, and with the help from The Venue, they have been given full support to go ahead

with this project and look forward to welcoming the general public back again to enjoy theatre once more.

insurmountable”.

Although they have not been able to prepare and or perform during the last year and a half, Stage Direct have been kept busy and have managed to keep their acting membership

The Group, during lockdown, kept their acting skills in good shape with zoom play readings among their members and were also joined by an acclaimed actor of TV and stage fame just for fun, which was great. The group have now settled down to some serious rehearsals; complete with new and very talented acting recruits in readiness for the performances which will run for two nights at The Venue in Holt on September the 17th and 18th 2021 starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets will be available from The Venue, (usually in the mornings prior to these dates) and they will also be available from Hair by Solo at 4A Barford Road Sheringham. Subject to availability, tickets will be sold on the door on performance nights.

Tickets cost £10.00. All sales must be cash. The tickets are unnumbered and will be sold on a first come first served unreserved basis.

on their toes by exercising their acting talents, albeit via zoom meetings.

Stage Direct has recently run a recruiting campaign to encourage new members with multifarious talents to help prop up their membership and for help with the preparations of this new extravaganza. Covid restrictions have given the producers some headaches in so much as being able to rehearse safely etc. but as the producers of the show said, “nothing is

To reserve tickets please call Nigel at work on 01263 823433 (during the day) or email Nigel on solo.hair@virgin.net

The group will move on to their next project almost immediately, which will be a farce called “Miss Marble Takes a Break” which will be performed at The Little Theatre, Sheringham in January 2022

We invite to come along with family and friends and look forward to seeing as many of our regular supporters as possible.

- Toll Barn Vets -

Here to Help!

Whether it‛s a dog or cat or rabbit, or an exotic reptile, fish or bird, Toll Barn Vets in North Walsham is on hand to help with your pets everyday routine veterinary needs as well as helping you through those stressful medical pet emergencies. Our canine friends enjoy their own waiting area and dedicated ward if they need to stay overnight, and our feline friends also have their own waiting area and dedicated ward including everything you would expect from an Accredited Gold Standard Cat Friendly Practice. Our exotic pets also have their own ward and waiting area complete with vivaria for our reptile species and specialised enclosures for birds. As an Accredited Gold Standard Rabbit Friendly Practice our small mammals also benefit from specially designed enclosures and an abundance of different tempting treats!

With autumn and winter on the horizon, now is the time to make sure your loved pet is ready for the months ahead. Our tortoise friends may need an annual “MOT” check to help keep them safe during hibernation. It‛s also a good chance to make sure our dogs and cats are up to date with routine flea and worming treatment and spot any signs of ill health or arthritis prior to the cold weather arriving. Our VIP Club helps to spread the cost of routine veterinary care and save you money and our veterinary nurses offer free of charge appointments to help determine the most effective and appropriate preventative parasite care depending on your pets lifestyle.

Dr Faye Bethell leads our team of four highly qualified vets and is a recognised RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine, so able to treat any exotic pet that might come along. Faye also treats some very exotic species as she works closely with some of Norfolk‛s most popular zoos and zoological centres. The vets are fully supported by a great team of qualified nursing staff able to offer advice for routine pet care and wellbeing including pet weight management, claw clipping and dental advice.

Fully equipped with some of the most advanced equipment available, including digital x-ray , dental x-ray, ultrasound scanner, video endoscopy and laser therapy, we also have our own on-site CT Scanner (something very few Norfolk vets are able to offer), and in-house lab able to provide rapid results helping us treat your pets more effectively and reducing the stressful wait for results. Toll Barn Vets is an independent family run veterinary centre offering 24/7 care for all our clients avoiding the need for stressful visits to unfamiliar practices who don‛t have your pets records available in emergency situations.

It's not all emergencies – we have a luxury Cat Boarding Hotel on site so if you are going away and you cat needs looking after by a dedicated team of veterinary professionals, the Cat Boarding Hotel could be the answer. The past months have left us all concerned about Covid risks and with client and staff safety the highest priority, Toll Barn Vets limits the number of clients able to be in the reception at any one time and provide large separate individual screened cubicles solely for your use during your visit. We also continue to offer the facility for clients to remain in their car while our staff collect your pet and our vets have a discussion with you in our private car park whilst maintaining social distancing.

Want to know more – just call us on 01692 407126 and have a chat with Nola Bethell the Practice Manager, or just make an appointment to come along with your pet.

A rewarding way to make a difference locally

Motor Neurone Disease: Do you enjoy listening to and helping people?

Are you looking for a volunteering role which fits in around your family, work, studies and other commitments?

By giving just a few hours a week you could make a huge impact.

As an Association Visitor for the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association you would maintain contact with people with MND, their families and carers by phone, email, via online platforms, or with face to face visits, when permitted. The role is a challenging but rewarding one. By offering confidential emotional support, information and help to access the right services, you can

enable people affected by MND to live their lives more easily.

Katie Moore, Association Visitor with the local West Norfolk Group says, 'Being an Association Visitor is a really rewarding role. It is a privilege to be able to support people in difficult times, and to know that you can make a difference in someone’s life. It's not always about the big things, sometimes just being there is enough.'

Nina Hicks whose late Mother, Pamela Tresize had MND commented on the support they received from their Association Visitor Steve and the support they received from the Kings Lynn and West Norfolk group:

“Because MND is so complex and individual it takes an amazing person to volunteer and I am

forever grateful to Steve Thorn and the compassion he showed my Mum. MND Kings Lynn are exceptional. They provide endless support emotionally and through the provision of information for both the patient and their families at diagnosis, during the illness and afterwards. They are irreplaceable and I thank them every day for everything they did for my mum and continue to do for me. They made a horrific situation a little easier and I will continue to raise money for them.’

For more information on how you can become an Association Visitor, or if you have any other skills to offer, please contact Liz Cooper, local Area Support Coordinator on 01604 800620 or email liz.cooper@mndassociation.co. Alternatively, you can find out more about MND, the Association, the Association Visitor and other roles and apply online at www.mndassociation.org Judy talks about her role: MNDA Association Visitors.mp4

For more information: Please contact or Liz Cooper, local Area Support Coordinator, on 01604 800620 or email liz.cooper@mndassociation.org.uk.

Testator’s “Insane Delusions” render wills invalid The High Court recently adjourned a "bitter" probate dispute between two siblings over their late mother's estate. Ms Bond and Mr Clitheroe have been embroiled in a dispute regarding the validity of their late mother's two wills.

would receive his mother's estate in its entirety.

A will is invalid if the testator lacked mental capacity at the time of making it. If a will is determined to be invalid and there is no other valid will in place, the testator will die intestate and the estate will pass under the intestacy rules.

If the mother is adjudged to have died intestate, Ms Bond and Mr Clitheroe would each receive a one-half share of their late mother's estate, believed to be worth approximately £400,000. However, if the wills are valid, Mr Clitheroe

positions and attempt to settle the matter without expending further substantial legal costs.

The Court at first instance held that the wills were not valid due to the deceased's lack of mental capacity. Deputy Master Linwood found that the deceased was suffering from, amongst other symptoms,"insane delusions" at the time of making both wills. Mr Clitheroe appealed against this decision on the basis that the Master had failed to consider that it was possible to reason his mother out of her delusions and therefore, the delusions did not render his mother incapacitated at the time of making the wills, meaning they are valid.

Mrs Justice Falk, sitting in the High Court, upheld Deputy Master Linwood's decision, confirming that, for a delusion to be present, there must be a false belief which is "irrational and fixed in nature". Whether or not it is possible to reason an individual out of that false belief is not a relevant part of the test. services to

A finding of whether or not someone lacks mental capacity at the time of making a will is a highly fact sensitive issue and can depend on several factors, such as the individual's own mental state, the effect of any mental impairments and the doctor's mental capacity assessment (if one was undertaken). Ultimately, the issue will fall to be decided by a Judge, applying the test set out in the well-known case of Banks v Goodfellow.

If you are concerned that someone close to you has executed a will without having the requisite mental capacity, it is essential that you seek independent legal advice as soon as possible.

Revival Prayer Walk from Lowestoft to Lighthouse A small team of people from Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham have been walking from Lowestoft to Sheringham to commemorate the East Anglian Christian Revival which started in Lowestoft 100 years ago.

The group of five walkers started their walk on Sunday July 18 at Boots the chemist in Lowestoft. The store had been built during the twentieth century on the site of the original Lowestoft Baptist church, where the 1921 Revival had begun.

The group included Ian Savory and Daniel Ward, two of the leaders at Lighthouse, plus Ian’s son Joe, and Connor Winston and Tim Waller, two of the interns at Lighthouse. They stopped to pray outside three other Lowestoft churches which had been caught up in the Revival, before continuing along the coast to Caister on Sea via Corton, Hopton, Gorleston and Great Yarmouth. Lighthouse youth pastor Peter Skivington joined the group on the second day which took them via Ormesby to Stalham where they were hosted by Stalham Baptist Church and amply fed by Ron and Jane Skivington.

Tony Rothe from Lighthouse, and also from the Network Norfolk Christian community news website, joined the walkers on the Tuesday, and takes up the story:

“We made our way north in glorious sunshine enjoying the beautiful Norfolk countryside, stopping for refreshment at the appropriately named Lighthouse Inn at Walcott. Reaching the coast lifted our spirits, and we soon passed through Bacton and the gas terminal, arriving at Paston for lunch overlooking the large village pond. It was a joy observing a heron patiently seeking his lunch, as well as a family

of noisy coots and also mallards and various dragonflies, as we munched our picnics.

“Prayer and ice creams in Mundesley provided a welcome break in our hike, before we completed the final leg past the radar site into Trimingham where our day’s walk concluded at around 3pm, some 12.5 miles after we started. This proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable day of fellowship, prayer and laughs, punctuated with well-timed refreshments.”

On the Wednesday, the core group was joined by Justin, one of the Lighthouse youth, for the final stretch from Trimingham via Cromer to Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham, in time for a cooked lunch at the church. The complete journey had been some 48 miles over 4 days.

Ian Savory, senior leader at lighthouse, said “We felt it was important to commemorate the last significant Revival experienced by the UK, which started just down the road in Lowestoft, and impacted the lives of so many people. We are praying that God will pour out His Spirit on these communities, and that a new Revival will, once again, sweep through our land, and that people will turn back to God in huge numbers.”

The No 1 anti aging breakthrough of the decade is available at the Coltishall Clinic This is a skin-resurfacing treatment known as CO2 fractional laser therapy. Its results beat any other non-CO2 laser skin rejuvenation technique.

CO2 fractional laser therapy is ideal for the treatment of sun damage, brown spots, fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity/texture and acne scars. Not only does this offer amazing results, but it does so safely and quickly with little downtime. The secret is out and the benefits speak for themselves. What will CO2 fractional laser do for me? If you have spent years in the sun, especially without adequate sun protection, then you know what it can do to your skin. Wrinkles, skin discolouration, sun spots, skin laxity may be reduced or eliminated with fractional laser. Also, if you have scars from acne or other skin injuries, then you may also be a candidate for this procedure. Now using this innovative new laser technology, less than 60 minutes in your doctor’s

office may restore your skin’s youthful appearance. While the aging process cannot be stopped, with proper care you can maintain your rejuvenated skin’s appearance for many years!

How CO2 fractional laser is different This utilizes a ‘dot’ pattern to create thousands of microscopic perforations in the skin while leaving the areas around each ‘dot’ intact. This fractional laser allows for the skin to heal more quickly from the edge of these tiny ‘dots’. The overall procedure is safer, faster and more efficient. Patients are often amazed at how tight their skin feels immediately after the procedure.

What are the advantages over deep chemical peels [TCA and phenol]? We do not perform any deep chemical peels as it is not possible to achieve precise control with these and chance of complications is higher. Deep chemical peels also result in prolonged downtime. Lasers are precision tools and achieve better

results more safely and consistently.

Is fractional laser safe? CO2 dot fractional laser has received clearance from the US Food & Drug Administration. Fractional laser has less recovery than traditional laser resurfacing treatments. Because the fractional laser creates a shallower, wider pattern, it promotes rapid healing. Fractional laser is minimally invasive and extremely safe, while delivering excellent results. Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS FP Cert., Medical Director and Laser Surgeon of Coltishall Clinic has many years experience with IPL and lasers. He has received intensive one to one training from pioneers of this technology in Italy and has reproduced excellent results in his clinic. We focus on providing results oriented, cost effective and safe treatments such as IPL Photofacial™, Laser treatments for skin rejuvenation and thread veins, injectable wrinkle treatments, dermal fillers, laser hair removal and laser and cosmetic surgery. Visit www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 01603 736487 for more information.

Police officers have been slapped in the face, kicked in the stomach and stamped on by this Government…”

Andy Symonds, Chair of Norfolk Police Federation, reacts to the police officer 2021 pay freeze announced by the Government – on the same day NHS colleagues were awarded 3% pay rise.

Andy said: "I’m not surprised in the slightest that my outstanding, committed and brave colleagues have not only been slapped in the face but kicked in the stomach and stamped on by this Government. Warm words mean nothing from the Home Secretary and the Police Remuneration Review Body.

COLTISHALL CLINIC 01603 736487

My colleagues have increasingly suffered both physically and mentally during this pandemic. They’re having to change shifts and short notice, work cancelled rest days, continually late off at the end of shifts just to make the system work. They give so much that goes unnoticed as they care about the vocation of being a police officer. Police officers believe in fairness and upholding the law along with integrity and a strong moral compass. However, there is clearly the opposite set of attributes at work with the current so called independent pay review system that is akin to playing against a body of people who hold all the cards.”

Reporting today, the “independent” Police Remuneration Review Body stated “This year our remit did not include making an overall pay award recommendation” so it did not bother. It also rejected any notion of a “bonus” for officers for their hard work policing the Covid-19 pandemic. Andy added: “Officers have no industrial rights and accept this with the caveat that we expect to have a fair and robust pay mechanism in which the goal posts cannot be moved at the whim of the Government of the day.

If the system was truly independent, then a pay review body should never be given an instruction from anyone that their remit does not include giving a recommendation on a pay uplift. WANT A SWEETER DEAL ON YOUR INSURANCE? We’ve seen that local government workers and firefighters have been awarded a 1.5% **FREE PEN WITH ALL NEW QUOTATIONS** pay uplift and our brave NHS colleagues a 3% uplift. So, you can understand why my **FREE BOX OF CHOCOLATES WITH ALL NEW POLICIES** colleagues and I hold the unwavering view that this Government hold us in contempt. **JUST MENTION THIS ADVERT WHEN YOU CONTACT US** The current pay review system is unfit for purpose and must be urgently changed.”

The Police Federation of England and Wales said: “The current pay system for policing is not fit for purpose. We are forced to enter into an inherently unfair process from the start, with the odds weighted firmly in favour of the Government where, it seems, a decision has already been made when they set the parameters for the pay review body. It is now essential that we review this process and look to find an alternative. A solution that has the best interests of police officer pay at heart. We will be seeking the views of our members and calling an urgent meeting with our 43 Federation branches from across England and Wales to discuss our next steps.”

One of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country is returning to Norfolk this autumn. Makers and creators will be opening their studio doors across the county as part of Norfolk Open Studios.

The well-loved annual event, which was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, will take place across 16 days in September and October, a change in dates for the event which will allow visitors to explore and experience Norfolk in the autumn.

More than 320 artists will be taking part across 267 venues to share and sell their work. Artists will be at work in their studios, garages, spare rooms, garden rooms, community spaces and schools sharing how they work.

always wanted to know from the artists themselves and maybe even having a go at creating something ourselves. And the chance to buy art direct from the artist is very special.”

Artists at all stages of their careers take part, from school and college students through to emerging artists and established and professional artists and makers. Visitors will find painters, sculptors, weavers, furniture makers, jewellery makers and lots more throughout the varied landscapes of Norfolk. Alongside opening their studios, many artists will be offering events, demonstrations and workshops to share their skills and practice. This year the scheme will welcome 23 schools to the event as well as 13 Art Trails, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios in one day.

Ros Dixon, Norfolk Open Studios Administrator, said: “We are so happy that Norfolk Open Studios is returning, a widely loved scheme that artists and visitors look forward to each year. 2021 will see it run at its new time in early autumn, allowing visitors to capture that special time of year as well as helping Norfolk Open Studios to develop a clear and bold identity as an autumn event. A preview exhibition will take place at The Forum between Tuesday 17th and Sunday 22nd August, offering visitors the chance to get a taste of what is on offer and plan their Open Studios visits.

The free exhibition is open 9.30am – 6pm daily, closing at 4pm on Sunday 22 August.

Ros Dixon said: “The Preview Exhibition at the Forum is always exciting and inspiring. It’s a chance to see work by so many of this year’s Norfolk Open Studios artists all under one roof and, for me, it’s when the scheme really comes alive.

“You get to see so many art forms side-by-side, and there will always be something for everyone to enjoy. You also get to meet the artists in person throughout the week, it really demonstrates what Norfolk Open Studios is all about.”

Norfolk Open Studios will take place between 25 September and 10 October 2021.

u3a - Spreading the Word in North Norfolk

North Norfolk u3a (NNu3a) will be busy spreading the word, that is promoting the University of the Third Age to active, retired folk in North Norfolk.

For NNu3a members this means ‘feet on the ground’ where they can talk to the great British public, especially those retired or about to retire and living in North Norfolk.

One of the best ways to do that is to take a stand – and what better way than to take a stand at Sheringham’s popular town market on Saturday 4th September.

NNu3a members will be on hand at Sheringham Market on the 4th September to chat about their own unique experiences. They’ll discuss how these could involve you when you’ve retired and have time to breath and do those things you never had time for.

They say the best way to stay young is to stay active, whether physical or mental. At NNu3a it doesn’t matter whether you’re interested in country rambles, learning a language, want to know more about music/dance or discover the hidden secrets North Norfolk.

Whatever... 'NNu3a currently have over 50 different groups covering a wide range of topics. It’s learning in a friendly informal way and a great way to make new friends. It’s definitely not like being at school!

New cancer service opens at Cromer A new service has begun at Cromer and District Hospital to provide further support and care to cancer patients closer to their homes.

A satellite service of the NNUH Acute Oncology and Haematology Service (AOS) has started in Cromer to help patients who are having symptoms or side effects as a result of their cancer or ongoing treatment. The nurse-led service is currently running three days a week in the Mobile Cancer Care Unit (MCCU) but will run Monday to Friday when the new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre opens.

The service, which is run by advanced nurse practitioners and nurse specialists, can carry out assessments, symptom management and procedures to treat recognised complications from cancer or cancer treatments. They also carry out blood tests, central line flushes, dressings and care of catheters, drains and stomas.

The nursing team said: “We are really pleased to be offering this satellite service to patients closer to their homes in North Norfolk to help them with their symptoms.”

Twins raise £430 for New Macmillan Centre

“There is a 24/7 number for patients to call, but we know that for some patients, the Norwich AOS is too far to travel and that some patients may opt to stay at home and suffer with their symptoms. We hope we reach out to more cancer patients in the Cromer area with this service.”

The Cromer AOHS is running 9am to 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The MCCU was launched earlier this year in partnership with cancer charity Hope for Tomorrow.

The North Norfolk Macmillan Centre is being built in partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the N&N Hospitals Charity. The centre will include six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day, three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, and a Macmillan cancer information and support centre.

Rose and Ruby Modle are 9-year-old twins from Cromer who were inspired by Captain Tom during the lockdown and wanted to raise money themselves to donate to charity.

They decided to raise funds for the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre because they recently lost a muchloved close family friend, Gill Swallow, to cancer and wanted this to be in tribute to her. They made krispie cakes and advertised them for £2 a box which they sold locally to friends, neighbours, work colleagues and school. Their initial target was £14, which quickly escalated to £100 and upwards to £430; they received several repeat orders even after their closing date!

The twins’ mother, Karen Modle, said ‘We know to be able to receive cancer treatment locally without having to travel to Norwich is a great asset for the local community. Our family are immensely proud of Rose and Ruby’s fund raising and dedicated achievement’.

The girls with their family attended Cromer Hospital on 30th June to receive a certificate and pin badge from Matron Anita Martins and Operational Manager Christopher Grayston.

Premiere for modern day farce penned by actor who is times. also an ICU nurse

A modern-day farce has been written for a Norfolk theatre by an actor who doubles as an intensive care nurse.

Ryan Starling, whose family live in North Walsham, will premiere his comedy The Morning After (The Night Before) play at Sheringham Little Theatre in August. The 29-year-old is a regular performer at the venue, starting in its youth group and more recently taking roles, ranging from a “nerd” to a granddad, in its summer drama season.

He has been combining his love of acting, with training and working as a nurse, and after qualifying has been doing 12-hour intensive care unit shifts at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. And after gruelling work sessions, lockdown gave him the time to fulfil the dream of writing a play of his own, in which he will take the lead role.

“I have been in a lot of farces, which are mainly set in a certain era when things were

Ryan Starling (Photo: Richard Batson / SLT)

not quite politically correct, and had the idea to write one from the modern day a few years ago while on tour,” explained Ryan.

He plays Gary who wants to get engaged to girlfriend Megan, and seeks to win over his future, but hostile, mother-in-law. However his best-laid plans turn to disaster when his best friend Temmy gets involved.

“Gary is an unfortunate and is trying not to be a party animal but ends up having the biggest night of his life – with a pole dancer and police involved. There will be all the traditional elements of a farce such as door slamming and mistaken identity, but more relevant to current

Farce’s appeal is broad – with a mix of visual and verbal comedy – and it is hard to write, to blend heightened reality without it becoming nonsense and keeping something back so the audience doesn’t guess what is going to happen,” he added.

The six-strong cast also features Little Theatre favourites Loraine Metcalfe as her mother and Ollie Westlake as Temmy.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “Our audiences love a good farce, but there are not many modern day ones about. Having one written by one of our favourite actors is a real delight and will give us a boost in our summer season during a difficult year for the theatre. We cannot wait to see how Gary’s night turns out.”

The show runs from August 18-21 at 7.30pm with 2.30pm matinees on August 19 and 20. Tickets £16 and £8 students are available from www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

SHS Summer Competition

Sheringham Horticultural Society did things a little differently this year, in lieu of their Summer Flower and Produce Show. It was decided earlier in the year that due to uncertainties around the release of lockdown, the show could not be held, so instead a container and hanging basket competition was held. Members of the society displayed their exhibits in their front gardens enabling judging to be carried out from a distance. There was also a scarecrow competition.

Competitors ranged from pre-school age to, shall we say, mature in years, and it was clear that a great deal of effort had been put into their entries.

The winners were: Sheila and David Allison for Best Hanging Basket. Doreen and Ian Hudson for Best Group of Containers. Marie Jones for Best Scarecrow. 3-year-old Edith Colman Mapes received a Highly Commended award for her scarecrow.

SHS would like to thank Robert Brown from Blyth and Wright for judging the competition. Top Left: Top Right: Bottom Left: Bottom Right:

Sheringham BeachLife returns with real life activities

A FEBRU ARY Sheringham BeachLife is back, in a modified ER TIMES form, and will launch in the town and on the beach the last full week of this year’s 92mm xduring 48mm summer holidays.

The children’s outreach week was restricted to an on-line offering in 2020 but is back this year with digital broadcasts in the mornings, activity packs, and family activities in the afternoons or early evenings, including a visit from a renowned magician on the last day.

BeachLife started in 2012, with Sheringham churches working together to provide four days of children’s activities and outreach at the end of the summer holidays, as well as some one-day events throughout the year. The numbers attending have been increasing each year, reaching a peak in 2019 with over 320 children and young people coming along for at least part of the main summer outreach.

Activities were necessarily curtailed in 2020, although a virtual BeachLife video was released, which also featured in Sheringham’s virtual carnival offering.

Real life BeachLife is back this year but combined with digital broadcasts as well in order to give young people and families a true BeachLife experience in as safe a way as possible. Activity packs are being prepared and the “Beach Special” will be broadcast at 10.30am each morning live on YouTube with

The Salvation Army Shop Manager in Sheringham Says Thanks to Town for All the Support The manager of The Salvation Army shop in Sheringham has thanked customers for their support during the pandemic.

Cindy Farrow is manager of the shop on Church Street. Business is booming and the shop also welcomes donations between 10am and 1pm Monday to Saturday. Cindy began volunteering in the shop nearly 30 years ago and said she loves serving people in the town. She’s supported by Claire Taylor, assistant manager.

She said: “We’re more than just a shop. People experiencing homelessness come to see us for help. Those needing practical help or referral to other agencies can speak to Carol, community manager, with her experience of supporting people within the community. We provide practical assistance through the shop and church building and the money our customers spend in the shop helps fund the programmes delivered. All our staff are very friendly, and we make sure we give everyone a lovely welcome. Now the locals are getting out and about again, we’re also getting people on holiday who are coming in and enjoying what we have and we’re at the hub of the community. We’ll do our best for everybody.”

ꞏ ꞏ ꞏ ꞏ

After nearly three decades of serving the community, Cindy has no intention of stepping down anytime soon for one simple reason – she loves her job and receiving unexpected donations from local people.

She said: “About 10 years ago, the uncle of a friend of mine lost everything he owned in a fire. I came to work and started going through all the boxes and bags I had but I couldn’t find anything. It came to the last suitcase and every single item was washed and ironed. What’s more, they all fitted him.

“We even had a car from a lady who decided to give up driving and wanted to donate it to us. We sold it back to the dealers for a donation. This is a vocation – you help people as and when you can, and I’m often surprised by the things that turn up. We’re here when people need us in the centre of town.”

Volunteers are also welcome. Call into the shop at 20, Church Street, Sheringham for more information.

Royal Academy of Art features work by Sheringham Woodfields pupils in Young Artists Summer Show

The 2021 Royal Academy of Art Young Artists Summer Show commences today (13 July 2021) and its on-line exhibition features a piece of art entitled ‘Emotions in colour' created by the Maple Class at Sheringham Woodfields School.

Maple Class is a class of complex needs pupils aged between 16 to 19 years old. These pupils can often find it difficult to discuss their feelings and emotions, but as a class they explored and talked about different emotions, relating them to different colours. They wrote poems about how they were feeling and then created a piece of artwork to convey an emotion that they were each feeling at the time.

Their piece of art was made from recycled mixed media and their chosen materials portrayed their individual feelings. The netting on the piece ‘Safe' represents being protected from others; spaghetti on the ‘Confused' piece represents their brain feeling tangled whilst the film on ‘Thoughtful' represents past memories. The teardrop on ‘Trust' shows that, sadly, trust can be broken.

Michael Smith, the Assistant Head Teacher

of Sheringham Woodfields School, believes this success is something for the whole school to celebrate, saying:

"This is the third year that the Royal Academy of Art has run this exhibition. This year it received over 33,000 entries from primary and secondary level students from across the UK and beyond, so this is a great achievement by the nine Maple Class pupils.

"The individual pieces are now on display in the main school, along with a written reflection from each pupil on the thoughts that inspired their creation. We are always looking to engage our students by creating the conditions where they can give expression to their thoughts and feelings, and Art is a fantastic conduit for communicating emotions. While we have created the conditions, it is the students who continue to inspire us by their imagination, enthusiasm and engagement."

Sheringham Woodfields School offers exceptional facilities both within the school and in the outside play areas which are

designed to assist pupils with complex needs and multi-sensory impairments to gain the best possible education.

Late last year the school's new Fields Therapy Centre was completed; this new facility is part of the Local Authority's SEND Transformation project to increase numbers in special education, and the school now caters for 135 pupils from across Norfolk who are supported by 130 members of staff.

The 2021 Royal Academy of Art Young Artists Summer Show runs until 8 August 2021.

The Committee emphasised that these precautions are being taken out of consideration for others – Covid infections are at a high level and likely to rise sharply and those dying of Covid even after 2 vaccinations are mainly those in the over 50s age group, which form a high proportion of the Club’s membership; the Club also has a thriving Junior tennis membership who mainly come for weekly coaching who have not yet been vaccinated and are at risk of Long Covid.

Club chairman Kelvin van Hasselt commented “We are determined to provide as safe an environment as possible for all those participating in the 5 racquet sports offered at the Club – Pickleball, Racketball, Squash, Table Tennis & Squash”. Sheringham Independent August 2021

Aylsham and District Flower Club The Flower Club has been running since 1953 and meets in Aylsham Town Hall normally on the second Wednesday of each month 7pm for 7.30pm.

However, on this special occasion (our first meeting for 18 months) we will be starting at 6pm in order to have a brief AGM before welcoming David Wright from Tunstead as our demonstrator.

David has chosen the theme “Twenty Twenty,“ and it will be very interesting to see how he interprets this with flowers. All arrangements which will be raffled after the demonstration. The meeting usually finishes at 9.30 pm. It is not necessary to be a flower arranger to enjoy these relaxing evenings just somebody who loves flowers.

During the year two Open Evenings are organised, one in the Spring and the second in November with a Christmas theme. We also have a workshop evening once in a while, and a competition for members each year neither of which are compulsory! Members provide arrangements for sale in Aylsham Market Place the day before Mothering Sunday.

Opportunities occur to visit other clubs in the areas well as invitations to take part in Church Flower Festivals. Twice a year we are asked to provide two arrangements in Norwich Cathedral.

Our Chairman, Crystal Dyball runs workshops for those wishing to develop their flower arranging skills.

For many years Aylsham Flower Club has

enjoyed providing displays in the Floral Marquee at Aylsham Show. Hopefully this will be possible in 2022.

During the Summer the club planned two garden visits. We visited Dunbheagan, a beautiful garden near Dereham in June, and in July will be seeing the garden at Highview House, Roughton.

New members and visitors are always very welcome. The committee would be pleased to have one or two more people to join our committee.

Why not come along and try us out?

There will be no charge at our opening meeting unless you wish to purchase a raffle ticket or two (50p each). Annual subscription and visitor fee to be decided at AGM.

As part of the drive to find more sustainable solutions to support visitors to our beautiful coastline, North Norfolk District Council is pleased to be trialling this environmentally friendly facility as part of a series of green initiatives. This innovatively designed installation is enabling us to provide facilities in one of our more remote locations.

A new public toilet is situated alongside the beach car park in Weybourne has been developed creating a low-cost option for human waste disposal. This free-standing toilet functions without water, electricity or chemicals and works by harnessing the natural energy from the sun and wind, making it a much more carbon efficient option than traditional toilets.

Reduce our carbon footprint Cut down water usage Use solar lighting instead of mains electric Eradicate methane gas output by dispensing with a septic tank Reduce the impact on the environment through not installing new drainage or power supplies • Increase protection of groundwater sources and our natural environment

The toilet is now open.

These ingeniously designed toilets have been used in several remote, countryside and sensitive locations across the country and our teams visited a similar installation at Thornham Walks in Suffolk. This installation complements the Council’s portfolio of public toilets, in particular offering a solution for Weybourne which is not only situated in a stunning natural environment but has no readily accessible utilities.

North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club got their first taste of competition for a long while at the "Midsomer Madness" competition held at the UEA promoted by the City of Norwich Swimming Club and under the auspices of Swim England's Covid Regulations which meant no spectators were allowed. A pity, as they would have seen Vikings enter 72 individual races, resulting in 61 best times and 16 top three finishes.

Noah Buchan of Beeston Regis won the 100m freestyle in 1:22.29. ahead of his Viking team mate, Michael Sayer from Holt who went 1:26.45. However, this was not enough for the two ten-year-olds respectively as they both made more trips onto the podium. Noah was

Esme Seaman, 11, was very brave to attempt the 200 Individual Medley long course. Esme finished in a creditable 10 place but with an outstanding twenty-two second improvement ahead of her entered time, subsequently hitting the pad in 4:15.0. In the seniors, Harry Hudson 15, from Stalham, broke a minute in the 100m freestyle in 58.71 finishing fifth, and later went onto break 30 seconds in the 50m with 26.52 respectively. Harry finished fourth after facing fierce competition in both races. At the conclusion Lead Coach Sam Watts said “I'm really pleased with everything we did over the weekend. Let’s keep this up and keep working hard.”

We’re back! On Tuesday 3 August, for the first time in well over a year, the Cromer and Sheringham Probus club met for lunch at the Links Hotel in West Runton.

There was no speaker this time – the aim was to catch up informally on the last 16 months. The lunch was excellent, and we enjoyed the chance to meet again. It is hoped to repeat this format in early September and, all being well, to resume in October with our normal lunches followed by a speaker.
