The Reef opens its doors to the public
Continued from front cover...
The facility, which has been built to be accessible to all, has something for everyone to enjoy. The six-lane, 25m main pool is built to Sport England’s high standards and will support a range of aquatic activities from competitive swimming events to inflatable play sessions for children. A moving floor on the 13m learner pool will allow the water depth to be changed for different activities and user groups such as swimming lessons, water confidence and toddler sessions and aqua fit exercise classes.
The pool will be accessible via shallow steps with an assisting handrail and a Poolpod for pool users who require a wheelchair. The Poolpod will be supported by a wheelchair storage zone near the Changing Places facility and a dedicated pool-side wheelchair for disabled users to transfer to, which is
compatible with the Poolpod.
Alongside the use of conventional heating methods, water at The Reef will be heated through solar thermal energy, meaning energy from the sun will directly heat the water and reduce the reliance on gas. There are Electric Vehicle Charge Points available for electric cars to charge.
For gym-users, the upper floor offers a variety of activities. The Reef has a 60-station health and fitness suite, including a range of exercise machines and free weights. The dance and activities studio, which covers an impressive 200sqm, offers opportunity for group exercise classes and studio sessions. In the virtual cycling studio, users will be able to take part in sessions around the world, with a virtual instructor leading the classes. The 23 stations allow a variety of classes, varying in intensity, distance and location.
Stuart Jardine, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “The Reef caters for all ages, abilities and interests and will be a centre for the local community to be truly proud of.”
Cllr. Virginia Gay, portfolio holder for Leisure, Culture and Wellbeing said: “Not so very long ago, in the summer of 2019, North Norfolk District Council made the decision to carry on with the construction of a new leisure centre for our District.
We wanted to make something truly special, the likes of which North Norfolk has never had before, and now here we are, about to open, about to welcome our first visitors to The Reef.
The Reef is the largest leisure offering in North Norfolk and represents an investment of £11m from North Norfolk District Council, alongside a grant of £1m from Sports England and the Lottery Fund.
The flagship project will improve the health and wellbeing of residents in North Norfolk for years to come, providing services and support which may not be readily available in the district.

Da Vinci’s Flying Xmas
A Note from the editor
By David Abbott
‘Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat…’ well you know the rest. I was thinking about that little ditty, and I think it sums up, quite nicely, what it is all about. Everyone looking forward to good food, company, exchanging gifts and making merry, but also a time of doing things for others. Going the extra mile to include others in our celebrations, helping out those who may not be looking forward to Christmas in the same way as the rest of us.
1502 AD. Xmas Eve. Leonardo was immersed in his studio dashing off a painting of a cross-eyed lady and doing some inventing. Suddenly he looked at his patented clockwork diary, realised the date and that he hadn’t got Papa Ser Piero a present. “I know, I will build him a flying machine,” he thought. “Papa will love that” He dropped everything including the cat and searched the room, found some balsa wood, canvas and a few cogs that were lying around and set to work. Next morning, he hired an ox cart, loaded his machine and headed for the family estate. It was snowing and the Tuscany landscape was a classic Yuletide picture. (Well it wasn’t. I made that up to add some seasonal colour). Papa met him at the gate. “Happy Xmas Leonardo. But why are you going to the tip today? It won’t be open”. Leonardo did his best to explain it was not rubbish but an invention which in 500 years’ time people would marvel at. “Always the dreamer,” said Papa. But being an attorney and notary, he gave his son the benefit of the doubt. Together they trudged up a large nearby hill. Papa was persuaded to sit on a saddle at the front of the machine. Leonardo gave it a shove and it slid off the hillside into the gorge. It didn’t fly. But his father did. “Hmmm,” thought Leonardo as he peered over the precipice. “I must add a parachute to my bucket list.” Papa Ser Piero would always remember this Xmas as the one his son catapulted him down a hillside in the name of science. But at least Leonardo made amends, inventing him a stress fracture device. Papa was so pleased he hit his son on the head with his crutch. No wonder Leonardo da Vinci wrote backwards. samX yppaH.
It has been a tough two years causing hardship and isolation for some. So, if you are able, spread a little bit of Christmas to someone you know or support one of the many charities looking after those less fortunate this festive season, as the rhythm says: ‘Please put a penny in the old man’s hat’, large or small, a gift to make this Christmas a little merrier for someone, well, that is what it’s all about, isn’t it? It just remains for me to wish all our readers and advertisers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy your December magazine. Jo- Editor

District Cllrs Penny Bevan-Jones, Colin Heinink, Liz Withington
Sheringham District Cllrs have continued to be very active in supporting and representing the community of Sheringham.
The health and well-being of Sheringham has been high on our agenda. Cllrs Withington and Heinink have been very active in setting up, supporting and continuing to run Sheringham
Community Support from the onset of the Pandemic. Cllr Bevan -Jones has continued to lead EXCEL 2000 as a support for health for older people. We are also delighted that the Reef project has come to fruition and by the time you read this should be open. NNDC Cllrs feel it is of vital importance that we support the local tourism economy with facilities such as the REEF but also in retaining, renovating and replacing public toilets. Having completed a replacement of the Lusher’s Yard toilets we are now looking forward to the renovation of the Marble Arch Toilets and this will include a Changing places facility. As part of the prom improvements the chalets are also being fully renovated after many years under the previous administration with very limited maintenance. Residents have also come forward with a number of issues which we are bringing forward recommendations and progressing. The Holway Road roundabout has continued to be a high priority for us as it is for many of you. We have engaged with Norfolk County Council Highways portfolio holder for Highways stressing the importance of the roundabout to the town from a safety point of view. We do not feel it is appropriate for this project to be languishing in an investment pipeline for
Other issues include the school parking with surveys under way along with reports completed with recommendations for Woodland Rise West to Common Lane and St. Nicholas Place and Links Road as well as a project to improve Cooper Road Playpark. All are now waiting to come forward on a Town Council agenda.
Those residents who experienced flooding in the Holway road area are also still being supported by district councillors. Cllr Withington also successfully brought forward a motion to ensure NNDC hold Anglian Water to account on the dumping of sewage in our waterways. We have also been supporting an increasing number of families who need new homes to rent after Landlords selling houses or transferring them to holiday lets.
For more information about the work of your district councillors you can keep ‘in the know’ through our monthly District Councillors Report, which you can find at www.lizwithington.mycouncillor.org.uk There are also useful contact numbers and access to support services for domestic abuse, housing and benefits among many other things.

In the Loop with Sheringham Town Council
The Councillors at Sheringham Town Council (STC) are pleased to have the opportunity to continue with this column as a way of keeping residents up to date with news from your Town Council.
At the November meeting of Full Council, it was agreed to grant £1,000 to Sheringham Little Theatre to be used to benefit the youth in the community. The meeting also received information from Sheringham County Councillor, Judy Oliver, about The Sheringham Community Art Project (SCAP) being led by local artist Colin Seal. This is an exciting seafront project and Colin will be holding public events for those who wish to know more or become actively involved – dates to be confirmed. District Councillors Penny Bevan-Jones, Colin Heinick and Liz Withington also provided a report which included news of plans for On-the-Go Recycling bins and BBQ Disposal bins for Sheringham as part of NNDC’s Litter Strategy.
Sheringham Town Council has accepted the resignation of Sheringham Town Clerk, Ben Bix. In addition, our Administrator has decided to move to a new job at NNDC and we wish them well. The Council has agreed the immediate actions necessary to address the vacant positions including interim staffing arrangements.
Our Councillor Surgeries continue to be held
monthly, and we hope that you will come along and talk to your Councillors about any concerns you have about the town or just pop in and meet us for a chat. We will be joined by Sheringham District and County Councillors. We are keen to meet residents and find out your views about the town and the things that matter most to you.
We look forward to working for you and with you in 2022 as we work to build a bright future for the town.
The date of the remaining surgery for the year (held between 6pm and 7pm) is: 14th December at Sheringham Community Centre
If you can’t attend a surgery, please do get in touch by phone or email. You will find all councillors’ contact details on the STC website, and you can contact the STC Office on 01263 822213 or info@sheringhamtowncouncil.gov.uk
The next Full Council meeting is on Tuesday 21st December at 7:30pm at Sheringham Community Centre. The attendance of the public is most welcome - you will find the agenda on our noticeboards located at the Community Centre and Otterndorf Green and on our website

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
01263 822838
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offe fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

Breaking up: dealing with matters amicably for the children by Emma George, Family Services, Hayes + Storr Solicitors
Breaking up can be very difficult, especially if children are involved. Often parents continue to live together until they separate, which can create a toxic family environment. Parents will need to decide where their child(ren) are going to live after the break-up, where they will go to school and other day-to-day arrangements.
This article explores 5 ways to keep matters amicable and act in the best interests of the children.
1. Think before you talk
Don’t talk negatively about your ex-partner in front of your children, whether directly or indirectly. Parental responsibility is a parent's duty to secure the welfare of their child, which is to be exercised for the benefit of the child. If a parent is talking negatively about the other parent they are not acting in their child’s best interests.
2. Discuss contact arrangements
It is important to discuss contact arrangements. The usual arrangement is for children to have a 50/50 split between parents to allow for equal contact, however this is not always possible due to work commitments or if one parent has moved far away. Under these circumstances, parents will often agree to have alternate weekend contact.
If you do not live with your child, think about living locally so that travel arrangements are easier. This way, the child can easily alternate between homes and, if appropriate, mid-week contact can take place. If moving away is unavoidable, consider indirect contact through telephone calls or other means.
3. Stick to a regular routine
A regular routine is important for children, so it comes as no surprise that when parents separate a child’s routine is likely to change. Create a new routine for your child(ren) as quickly as possible. If your child is finding the change difficult, try to communicate with your ex-partner to discuss how you can make things better for them.
4. Talk to your children
Make sure your child is handling the separation and changes well. If they are old enough, discuss their wants and needs. This can help shape future arrangements and determine whether current arrangements are working.
If your child is young, consider talking to your ex-partner about how the separation may affect them as they grow up, and think about possible short-term arrangements which could improve the situation until they get older.
It may be useful to agree on a ‘Parenting Agreement’ which can be regularly altered to reflect the child’s age. This can include, among other things, details about holiday arrangements, educational and welfare needs.
5. If you’re struggling, seek advice
If you are struggling to deal with arrangements amicably, a solicitor can help negotiate on your behalf. Whilst it is important for parents to try and continue communicating, we know that this is not always possible, and it can be helpful to discuss any areas of disagreement with a professional.
If you are going through a breakup and would like to speak to a professional about children or other legal family matters call Hayes + Storr on 01263 825959.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
On Tuesday 2 November, after an excellent lunch at the Links Hotel, we were given an entertaining and informative talk by Mr Chris Armstrong, who is a Trustee and Vice-Chair of the Norwich Historical Churches Trust. His subject was “Scholars, Saints and Sinners”, and the theme was “some of Norfolk’s most colourful clergy in the 19th century”.
Chris, himself from a line of clergymen, said that in the past not all clergymen (regrettably) were devout and being a clergyman was in those times, for many, just a career option.
Revd. George ‘Ammunition’ Smith was a remarkable character (a hero if not actually a saint). He moved from Britain to South Africa and was caught up in the wars against the Zulus. He was involved in the defence of Rorke’s Drift and wandered amongst the British soldiers, handing out rounds of ammunition. It was a 12-hour battle, but he survived, as did many of the British soldiers. Eleven of these (though apparently not George Smith) received the VC.
Augustus Jessopp was a writer and scholar and also a cleric and teacher. He was headmaster of Norwich Grammar School for 20 years. He was appointed at a time when the school was at a low ebb with only 30 pupils, and he brought in a number of reforms including the teaching of mathematics and modern languages. He later became Rector of Scarning.
Top Class Service! “Absolutely faultless from start to finish” - Mrs JN
Our speaker went on to tell us about a sinner, though there were several candidates for this last category! Harold Davidson, rector of Stiffkey in the 1930s, appears to have been both naive and his own worst enemy in believing (sincerely, apparently) that he had a mission to women of ill-repute! This caused him endless trouble and led to his being eventually defrocked.
Please give us a call to discuss how we can get you moving 11 Station Road Sheringham NR26 8RE
Our chairman thanked Chris for his entertaining talk and the members heartily applauded.
In December we will meet for our Christmas lunch; then on 11 January, Paul Rundle will be speaking to us. (His talk was postponed from September.) A Little Eastern Promise
Sheringham Library News
Face masks are now mandatory in the library, unless you are exempt. Please observe respectful distancing. Hand sanitiser is available. We are open for book browsing, computer use and free lateral flow kits.
During the middle of a pandemic was probably not the ideal time to turn a computer shop in the heart of Sheringham into a holistic retreat but that’s exactly what Veronica Zappia did in summer 2020.
Together with an army of Sheringham locals she poured hours upon hours in and, sure enough, as restrictions began to lift in the September Rejuvee opened its doors. It was tough, Veronica allowed similar local beauticians and aestheticians to join her in bringing the place to life when the world around was seemingly becoming more and more unlike anything ever known. Supporting other local women like herself to bring back some normality into their lives and money into their pockets, Rejuvee began to push itself out onto the high street.
Our current opening hours are: • Monday: 10am-7pm • Tuesday: 10am-7pm • Wednesday: 1pm-7pm • Thursday: Closed • Friday: 1pm-7pm • Saturday: 11am-4pm • Sunday: Closed

Alpacas not Reindeer! Age Concern North Norfolk had two important guests to the Day Centre – Bumble and Bee from Bumblebarn, in Beeston Regis.
The 2 year old half-brothers were very well behaved, taking the offers of carrots from the clients and posing for photographs as well as having their thick coats ruffled and stroked. It was an exciting afternoon where clients who
sometimes get agitated in the later part of the day were fully engaged with the activity and were recalling their own experiences of having animals and pets and one lady spoke about keeping and riding horses.
Lots of questions were asked about their care, their diets and how many other alpacas there are on the farm and their handlers were only too willing to give as much information as was requested.
The sensory stimulation of this visit cannot be underestimated for people living with dementia as there was the opportunity to touch, smell, hear their snorts and see these lovely creatures and the many photographs will be a constant reminder.

December News from Duncan Baker MP
It’s been another very busy month both in Westminster and at home in North Norfolk Dog Theft
Throughout the year, many of you have contacted me with concerns about dog thefts. This heartless crime deprives individuals and families of their much-loved family members and causes huge distress to animals. I responded by successfully arguing for a new Pet Theft Taskforce to be set up. As a result of this work, the government’s new Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill is currently going through Parliament. Alongside powers to tackle puppy smuggling and livestock worrying, the Bill includes a new dog abduction offence: those who steal our faithful friends will face jail sentences of up to five years. This is a great result and thank you to everyone who contacted me about this issue.
Water companies will be obliged to monitor and publish details about water quality, and significant fines will be imposed on companies which continue to pollute our watercourses.
Work on wind farms continues, with some more good news. Equinor has extended its pre-application period for the Sheringham and Dudgeon Extension projects, allowing more time to discuss how onshore cabling can best

It’s been great to visit some of the charities which benefited from my London Marathon run in October, raising over £38,000. It’s been inspiring to see the work being done by the Friends of Roughton School, Ladybird PreSchool Nursery, Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society, and Stalham Community Gym. I also enjoyed my visit to Alderman Peel School in Wells, meeting students who were runners up in the Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize for designing a personal pollution monitor called ‘Pura-Sky’.

Climate Change
In the month COP26 was held, there’s been great progress on climate change this month. Over 100 world leaders have now promised to end and reverse deforestation by 2030 – including Brazil, a vital signatory to the agreement. And – contrary to some reports in the media – Amendment 45B to the Environment Bill was agreed, placing a new direct legal duty upon water companies to reduce and eliminate the release of raw sewage through storm overflows. In an area with six blue flag beaches, it’s vital that our incredible coastline, rivers, and streams are protected.

Story of the North Norfolk Railway
A new DVD film has just been released giving the story of one of Norfolk’s main attractions. Titled ‘The Story of the North Norfolk Railway’, the DVD of over an hour long traces the long history of this important branch line from its building in the 19th century through to its closure by British Rail in the 1960s and purchase for preservation by the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society soon afterwards.
The DVD includes rare archive film portraying the last days of services at Sheringham and Look East TV news coverage of the rundown of services along the railway and at Melton Constable, once the main depot for the Victorian railway company. A derelict scene at Weybourne station in 1966 shows the massive task ahead of the new heritage railway volunteers as they prepare the railway for reopening in the early 1980s as far as Kelling Heath and then further along the route to the market town of Holt. Up-to-date scenes show the railway in operation today with in depth portraits on steam locomotives and heritage carries in operation along the 5-mile branch line.
Released in time for Christmas, the DVD is available from – www.railwayvideo.com
Winter Festival at NWT Cley Marshes
Come one, come all: Norfolk Wildlife Trust celebrates diversity in community at Cley Marshes’ winter festival. Cley Calling: Community is Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s annual winter celebration of walks, talks, workshops, art and performance, all inspired by the natural world. The festival will be taking place from Thursday 9th - Sunday 12th December at NWT Cley and Salthouse Marshes.
This year, NWT are focusing on the diversity of our landscapes, our wildlife and our communities. Each event focuses on uplifting and spotlighting the experiences of people who have formerly been excluded from conservation; drawing on artists and experts to see how we can all become more inclusive. Talks will take place online and in person; NWT Wildlife Ambassador Nick Acheson will kick these off at the Centre on Thursday 9th December with David Lindo, aka ‘The Urban Birder’, as David shares top tips for birding in towns and cities. Online, NWT will be hosting a digital panel entitled ‘Access for all: How can we make nature conservation more inclusive?’, featuring the likes of Alex Bond, Stuart Buchart and Anita Sethi.
Throughout the festival, art lovers can visit ‘Living Landscapes’, an
exhibition by youth-led heritage group NNF Common Ground. This exhibition explores young people’s responses to the array of landscapes present across Norfolk. Four-piece ensemble The Norfolk Broads will also return for another year of witty and wonderful musical accompaniment to Cley’s landscape on Saturday 11th December. For creative types, artist Ellen Harling will combine foraging, monoprinting and collage to create pieces inspired by Cley’s flora, fauna and landscape in her workshop on Friday 10th December, whilst artist Alice Lee is running an all-ages-welcome Bird mobile workshop on Sunday 12th December.
There are, of course, plenty of opportunities explore the reserve too. Amongst them beach clean circuits and introductions to birding, ranger Ajay Tegala will be leading a guided walk of the reserve on Thursday 9th December, followed by a talk exploring his career pathway. This is a perfect opportunity to quiz him about his budding career as a BBC Springwatch presenter. Author James Mcdermott will also be leading a fascinating writing workshop on the queerness of nature on Saturday 11th December, exploring the fluidity and diversity of nature and how we can alter our interpretations of our world.

Merry Christmas from Toll Barn Vets
Christmas is fun for all the family and that definitely includes all our pets! However, Christmas is often a busy time for our 24/7 on-site emergency service as there are plenty of hidden dangers lurking during the festivities which we should all be aware of to help keep our pets safe.
Christmas Cake, Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls all contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. These should never be fed to pets as they can cause kidney damage and in severe cases kidney failure. They can also contain alcohol which can cause signs of intoxication as well as dangerous drops in blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body temperature. Not all dogs will be affected but there is no way of knowing which animals will suffer from toxicity so they are best completely avoided. Macadamia nuts can also be toxic causing neurological signs such as weakness, depression, tremors and vomiting within 12 hours of being eaten. Onions and garlic can also be harmful (even when cooked) with signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia). Many Christmas dinners include sage and onion stuffing or onion based gravy so it is best to avoid giving these “left overs” to pets.
Chocolate decorations are frequently used on trees and in stockings. Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine (similar to caffeine) which is toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels). Depending on the amount and type of
chocolate eaten signs range from vomiting and diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias). If your pet eats chocolate it is important to be able to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate has been eaten as this will help us calculate whether a toxic dose has been reached. Some foods such as sugar free gum and diabetic biscuits contain xylitol. Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar which is often used as a sweetener in low carbohydrate and diabetic products. When pets eat xylitol their blood sugar level can drop rapidly causing lethargy and weakness and in severe cases, seizures. Xylitol can also cause liver failure in some dogs. The signs of this can take several days to develop. We would advise urgent veterinary attention for any pet who is suspected to have eaten products containing xylitol.
Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell. This means they will often hunt out bones, foil or string with meat juices from the rubbish bin or counter tops. These bones are often brittle and splinter easily which can cause blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine whilst foil or string can cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine.
Many of these (and other) foods also contain high levels of fat. This can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and more seriously increases the risk of pancreatitis.
There are also several household dangers which are more common at Christmas. Tinsel and tree ornaments are particularly attractive play things to cats and puppies. If eaten these will often cause blockages and twists within the intestines of your pet requiring immediate surgery to remove the material. Christmas ornaments will also often break if played with by pets. This can cause choking, cuts within the mouth and damage to the intestines if eaten. Christmas trees themselves are also
eat have a gr
potentially toxic with pine needles causing irritation of the mouth (which may show as excessive drooling), vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness. Naughty puppies and kittens have also been known to injure themselves climbing Christmas trees or knocking them over so it is always advisable to have a barrier to prevent access to the tree, as well as supervision!
Candles and fairy lights are always appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns. Make sure electric lights and candles are always placed out of reach of naughty paws!
Heated oils create pleasant aromas around the house but can cause burns to the tongue and mouth if licked so make sure they are placed away from inquisitive animals.
Festive bouquets often include Lilies but ingestion of the plant or plant pollen can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat comes into contact with Lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t-shirt on the cat to prevent them licking and ingesting more pollen and contact your vet for advice. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression. Mistletoe has been known to cause collapse, changes in heart rate and erratic behaviour following ingestion. Poinsettia sap has irritant properties which can cause blistering of the mouth and stomach when eaten. We would recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets!
Most of these potential dangers are treatable if caught early enough so if you have any concerns about your pet during this festive period our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Christmas and New Year on our normal surgery phone number (01692 407126).
We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

A new winter health campaign launches to help people take care of their health Local health and care organisations in Norfolk and Waveney have launched a new “Give Your NHS a Hand This Winter” campaign to help residents stay as well as possible during the cold months ahead.
The campaign aims to encourage Norfolk and Waveney residents to look after their health and wellbeing by preparing for winter illnesses and ailments in a bid to improve health outcomes and help reduce pressure on local health services.
Created in partnership with the local NHS, county councils, district councils and the wider health and care system, the campaign will help people understand how they can best protect their health and support their mental wellbeing during this challenging time, with both COVID-19 and seasonal viruses, such as flu, circulating.
The campaign promotes some of the essential ways that residents can look after their health and wellbeing this winter, including:
• Getting their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations
• Keeping themselves well this winter by staying warm, keeping active indoors and outside, and keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet so they are prepared for common illnesses • Encouraging use of the NHS 111 service, community pharmacies, Minor Injuries Units, and GP practice services instead of going to A&E • Supporting people to look after their mental health
www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
Louise Smith, Director of Public Health at Norfolk County Council, said: “This winter it is more important than ever that we keep practicing good infection prevention and control measures to help reduce the risk of transmitting and catching viruses. Washing your hands thoroughly with warm soap and water for 20 seconds, using hand sanitiser regularly, and wearing a face mask while out in public will help protect you and those around you from serious winter illnesses.”
A new online portal www.winterwellnorfolkwaveney.co.uk has been created where people will find key information and resources to help them stay well this winter. Residents will be able to find information about topics such as winter hardship resources, information on what types of health services they can access for their health needs, health and wellbeing advice, as well as mental health advice and support services which can be especially important during the challenging winter months.
Stuart Richardson, Chief Executive of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The earlier people receive support for their mental health, the more likely they are to benefit from treatment. I encourage anyone who is struggling to come forward to get the support they need.
“For people who are experiencing anxiety and depression, talking therapies are most effective.
Cath Byford, Chief Nurse of NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “We are facing a tough winter this year with both flu and COVID-19 both in circulation. Vaccines are the best protection we have against these serious and deadly illnesses. Our flu and COVID-19 vaccination programmes continue at pace, and I want to thank the thousands of people that have come forward to get their jabs already. With this campaign we hope to encourage everyone to get vaccinated when offered, as well as taking up some of the practical health and wellbeing advice to take care of their health and wellbeing this winter.”
Launching during Self-Care Week (15-22 November), the campaign is set to provide timely information and advice on practical ways that people can help to keep themselves well this winter. In addition to information and resources to support people to stay warm and active for their health, the campaign also includes guidance on ways to stop the spread of infectious illnesses like COVID-19, flu,
and the common cold.
These can be accessed through Wellbeing either online by visiting www.wellbeingnands.co.uk or by calling 0300 123 1503.”
For more information on Give Your NHS a Hand and to access the winter health and wellbeing resources, visit www.winterwellnorfolkwaveney.co.uk.

The magazines and TV programs are full of Christmas recipes at the moment, so I thought I would come up with a traditional Scottish dessert for New Year. If you are entertaining and want something you can prepare quickly and ahead of time, as well as being a crowd pleaser, this is it!
Ingredients 600mls double cream 75g pinhead oatmeal, toasted
6 tablespoons whisky 3 tablespoons honey (Scottish if you can get it) 500g fresh raspberries
Method Spread the oatmeal on a metal baking tray and put under a hot grill to toast for 3 -5 minutes, taking care not to let it burn, then leave to cool. Keep aside a little oatmeal and a few raspberries for decoration. Whip the double cream to soft peaks, gently fold in the whisky and honey followed by the oatmeal. Finally combine the mixture with the raspberries.
Turkey Free Christmas!
Not everyone is keen on turkey for their Christmas lunch, so it’s good to have an alternative to hand that won’t have you slaving over a hot stove for hours. This is an adaptation of my lentil loaf that’s a firm favourite in our house, made festive by the addition of juicy cranberries and chestnuts, both easily obtainable at this time of year. If you happen to have a vegan or vegetarian coming to your Christmas lunch, you can happily give them this, and it’s so tasty that you may find the meat eaters asking for a portion too! Any leftovers can be portioned up and kept in the freezer for a couple of months to provide quick and easy suppers. Make it ahead of time and keep warm, or even the day before and reheat on the day, either in the
microwave or portion wrapped in foil and placed in the bottom of the oven for half an hour. Merry Christmas one and all and see you in the New Year for some more delicious recipes!
Festive Lentil Loaf 150g red lentils, well rinsed 1 large red onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 10 Chestnuts, chopped (use a vacuum-packed packet) 6 sun dried tomatoes, chopped (use oil from the jar for frying) 1 large carrot, peeled and chopped into small chunks Handful dried cranberries Rounded tsp dried sage Flat tsp dried thyme 900ml Veg stock 100g oatmeal (porridge oats are fine) Rounded tsp miso paste, mixed with a little hot water
Spoon the mixture into four glasses and chill for at least one hour, but overnight is ideal. When ready to serve, top with a little toasted oatmeal and a few raspberries saved from earlier. Enjoy! Jo – Editor
Tbsp poppy or sesame seeds (optional)
Gently fry off the onion and carrot in a little oil from the sun-dried tomato jar or use a little olive oil until softened, then add in tomatoes, herbs, chestnuts and garlic and gently fry for another few minutes. Add lentils and stir to coat with oil, then pop in cranberries and veg stock and gently simmer for around 20 mins until lentils are breaking up and most of the water is absorbed. Stir in miso paste, and then take off the heat and add oats to combine fully. Generously grease a 2lb loaf tin with olive oil and add in the lentil loaf mix, pressing down gently with a spoon. Top with a tablespoon of poppy or sesame seeds if you have them. Bake in a preheated oven on 180° for approx. 30 – 40 mins, until piping hot throughout and golden on top. After 10mins, run a knife around the edges and swiftly upturn onto a chopping board. Cover with foil and a clean tea towel until ready to serve with your Christmas Lunch! Carolyn Burn
Christmas Time
Mistletoe with bright red bow, Holly in the hall. Yule log blazing in the grate, Shadows on the wall. Sherry for the grown ups, Something for the kids. Ticking clocks, hanging socks, And droopy, droopy lids. Time for bed, goodnights said, “However shall we sleep”? Snuggle down, eyes shut tight, Trying not to peep. Christmas morn’, not quite dawn, Everyone awake. Santa’s been, his plate is clean, Not one crumb of cake. Around the tree, shouts of glee, Gifts all scattered under. Bright new toys, big round eyes, Alight with joy and wonder. Time to eat, what a treat, With good food on the table. Turkey roast, “Who’ll eat the most”? And pudding if you’re able. Then off to the park, not quite dark, Singing as we go. Arm in arm, what Christmas charm, With moonlight on the snow. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Toys and Tins Appeal returns for Christmas
People in Norfolk are being asked to share some joy with those who are finding life tough this Christmas by supporting The Salvation Army’s Toys and Tins Appeal.
For the past 30 years, the Toys and Tins Appeal has been helping vulnerable children and families in Norfolk who might otherwise go without during the festive season. Every year, members of the public generously donate gifts, food and toys, which are then distributed to those in need by Salvation Army volunteers.
of Christmas presents. In our current financial climate this is the situation many find themselves in.
“The Salvation Army has established a reputation over more than 150 years for helping people who are finding life tough. We endeavour to help as many vulnerable children and families as we are able.
Last year, the appeal helped 6,766 people, including 3,810 children who might otherwise not have had any presents to open on Christmas morning.
Major Rosemarie Williams, coordinator of the county-wide appeal, said organisers anticipate the need for support will be greater than ever this year. She said: “I can only imagine the worry and sadness that fills the heart of a parent, when they have very little to feed their family, and there is even less money for the purchase
Photo courtesy of The Salvation Army
Because The Salvation Army is a church and also a charity, it is our desire to bring the Christmas message of hope, joy and light to some of the most difficult situations.”
Rosemarie paid tribute to the volunteers, who socially distanced, and gave up their
AP Bodywork Ltd
free time in order to help out in 2021. She added: “This year the sorting of gifts and packing of tins has already begun as the need is opening up before us. We are only able to do this because of the generosity of the public donations of toys and tins and also via our JustGiving page. We are so grateful to all businesses and individuals who support our work locally.” The appeal is promoted by BBC Radio Norfolk, who act as media partner.
Donations can be made through our JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/fund/toys-andtins-appeal-2021 Alternatively drop off toys to any Salvation Army charity shop in Norfolk. Location details can be found via www.salvationarmy.org.uk/ map-page
There is also a Toys and Tins donation point in The Forum, Norwich. You can find Santa's Chimney in the Christmas Cards for Good Causes pop up shop located in The Gallery.

Employment Law: What you need to know about Settlement Agreements
Sadly, the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on businesses has led to an increase in people being made redundant. The Office for National Statistics recently reported redundancy rates have increased faster during the pandemic than during the 2008 to 2009 economic downturn, and with further uncertainty ahead, many employers are continuing to reduce their workforces. This has led to an increase in employees being offered settlement agreements.
What is a settlement agreement? A settlement agreement (previously known as a comprise agreement) is a legally binding, voluntary contract between an employer and employee. The contract provides that an employee agrees not to pursue any claims against the employer in a tribunal or court in exchange for the payment of a severance sum to the employee. A settlement agreement may be appropriate where the employment relationship is continuing, but it is most common for these agreements to be entered into where the employment has terminated (or is about to do so).
Since many businesses have faced financial difficulties during the pandemic, it’s likely that the use of settlement agreements will be favoured by employers. This will give employers peace of mind as it will remove any risks of employment-related claims being brought by
employees and will firmly draw a line under the employment relationship.
What should you do if your employer offers you a settlement agreement? A settlement agreement will not be valid unless the employee has received independent legal advice on the terms and effect of the settlement agreement and in particular its effect on their ability to bring a tribunal claim under the relevant legislation.
As an employee will be waiving their right to pursue any claims, the adviser will consider whether the employee has any claims and will advise on the prospects of success of those claims, along with the potential compensation a successful claim would attract. Under most circumstances, the employer usually contributes towards the cost of receiving that advice.
Whilst the adviser is not required to consider whether the employee is getting a “good deal”, this is certainly something that can be discussed. If the employee wishes to negotiate for an increase in the compensation payment, this is something the adviser can undertake on their behalf.
Meet Head of Department Nicola Strefford Nicola Strefford, Head of the firm’s employment team, has over 13 years' legal experience gained in both private practice and local government. She has extensive involvement in advising on a range of employment issues to
employees and has an excellent record for achieving successful outcomes for her clients. Nicola was recently awarded the ‘Rising Star’ award in The Legal 500; the leading guide of the best law firms and solicitors in the UK.

popular, with some raising as much as £500 each. Norfolk’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Scott Norman, says: “When we started this project, we didn’t predict how much the public would want to get involved as artists, or how high the demand would be for these unique works of art. “We originally set a £4,000 fundraising target but are delighted that we doubled this. We want to thank the artists, the public who visited and submitted bids, and our staff who put so much effort into organising it and staffing the display.
The helmets were all previously worn by staff until they were replaced last year with newer uniform. Each had unique marks, dents and scratches from their time in service.
Service staff worked as volunteers on the project and had originally planned to display 65 designs but ended up putting 74 on display after being overwhelmed with the community response. The finished results proved hugely

“Not only have these treasured helmets become unique works of art, but the money raised will make a huge difference to so many lives. These vital funds will help us, as a charity, continue to meet the physical, mental and social wellbeing needs of the entire of the UK’s fire and rescue service community.”
During the exhibition, people were encouraged to bid on the helmets via an online auction, with the highest bidders getting to take the unique artwork home forever. The auction then stayed open for a further two weeks to allow more time for bidding - with the final bids totalling £8,194.
The final profit will go to Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service’s chosen charity The Fire Fighters’ Charity (90%), with the remaining 10% going to Break

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Last time we mentioned the four kittens recently re-homed that joined us from the industrial estate. Their places have now been taken by a further four who already have people interested in giving them a new home. The gentleman who looks after them does not work there anymore but goes each day to feed the feral cats living there. He has noticed that several more adult cats had joined the colony and has an arrangement with Westover to take these cats in to be neutered once trapped. This will be done over several weeks to allow the vets to fit in the operations in their busy workload.
There is good news on the re-homing front too. Norman, Neville, Sammi, Miska and Ezra, all adult cats, plus AJ and Gio, two delightful kittens, have all now left us. We wish them well in their new homes as they have plenty of time to adapt to their new surroundings before the festive season.
Walsham Church Wreath Festival featuring some of the cats rehomed by the branch over the years. Thank you for reading about the branch and the work that we continue to do. Have a Happy Christmas and hopefully, a Healthy New Year.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. If you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where
As this will be the last article for this year, we would like to thank all those who help to ensure the cats in our care have the very best of attention. Firstly, all those cat lovers who have made contributions of food in our box in Sainsburys, (even when the shelves were quite bare). Also, Morrisons in Cromer, who also made a donation of food to the branch. Many thanks too to Caroline, Irene and Julie, our fosterers, for making sure the cats have the very best of care while with us and Lisa and Fran for helping with cat care at Dilham. Bev, Bren and Sue for their contributions, dealing with the computer tasks, and most importantly Stephanie who has the cat phone and cares for some of the cats as well as all the other tasks that she undertakes. We also thank our vets who have continued to provide an excellent service in spite of a very difficult year. Thank you also to Jo at the Times for helping to promote the work that we do by printing these articles.

Find us on Facebook: Cats Protection North Walsham Editor’s note: I’m sure all the cats who have been helped and rehomed would add their thanks to all at North Walsham Cats Protection for their hard work too.

Although we have not had any sales, Andrea and Glidy have continued to make beautiful cards which have been sold at the vets and raised money for the branch. The Street Safe tool will be promoted via Norfolk Constabulary's social media channels. Please follow us on Twitter @NorfolkPolice on our Norfolk Constabulary Facebook page and on Instagram norfolkpolice.
This follows on from Chief Constable Paul Sanford’s pledge to work with communities and reassure people in their local areas with a visible presence in crime hotspots and areas people feel unsafe. This is also part of Norfolk Constabulary’s approach to tacking violence against women and girls and increased concerns over safety following the murder of Sarah Everard.
If you are in immediate danger, you should still call 999. Police 101 is the non-emergency number. Some charities and organisations will also be offering support, please see the list on our website if you need to contact someone for support or advice: www.norfolk.police.uk/advice/
Mr Sanford, who has been patrolling with officers in King’s Lynn as part of the Park, Walk and Talk initiative targeting areas people feel unsafe, will be part of the visible presence in Street Safe hotspots over the coming weeks.
He said: “We are taking action based on the information fed back directly from communities. We know a visible presence provides reassurance and is an effective way of reducing crime. The Street Safe tool is running until at least the end of this month so we would encourage people to continue to let us know the areas they feel are unsafe in our county.

Silent Solution The Silent Solution system helps filter out accidental or hoax 999 calls from those who need genuine police assistance.
If you are calling from a mobile phone and speaking or making an immediate sound would put you in danger and you need immediate help, call 999 and stay on the line, then press 55 when prompted and the call will be transferred to the police, who will know it is an emergency call.

“This initiative will help us to ensure that our time patrolling is spent in the areas where it will have the greatest impact for local residents.”
After our initial launch in October, we have had a total of 405 reports from members of the public via the Street Safe tool, a Home Office pilot scheme up until the end of November. We are using this information alongside crime figures for different areas to deliver a visible presence and will be using drones as an additional measure in some hotspots.
Officers are sharing information about their patrols via district social media accounts under #StreetSafe.

Cley-next-the-Sea is set to sparkle!
Miss Marble Takes a Break is Stage Direct’s Newest Production Uneasy calm leads to chaos in the Mo-Dell household, with an unexpected, untimely homecoming of their stoic housekeeper, Miss Marble.
C
Starting on 1st December, nine beautifully decorated windows in Cley will be illuminated between 4pm and 8pm.
With the help of a cheeky cockney CCTV man, Melissa hatches a sophisticated plot to entrap her husband George, in coital shenanigans with their temporary housekeeper.
They will be joined the following day by another window or two and so on until Window from Cley Advent Windows 2020. 24th December, when (Photo: Matthew Roe) approximately 45 windows throughout the village will be on show – rather like a giant advent calendar! They will then be illuminated each evening and will continue to be until 6th January.
Unaware of his wife’s plot; whilst Melissa is out that evening, George embarks on a plot of his own, employing a chef to create a romantic meal for himself and his mistress Meg.
Everyone’s plans are foiled when Meg (the other woman) Overhears Melissa’s plan.
Greg, Melissa’s prearranged gigolo/gardener arrives on cue and ends up with a client, but in the confusion of a power cut; exactly who will it be?
Maps showing the window trail can be collected from all businesses in the village or downloaded from www.cleyharbour.co.uk.
Set to premiere at Sheringham Little Theatre on January 20th and running until the 22nd, Miss Marble Takes a Break will be Stage Direct’s 37th production, and once again it will be an original script written by Nigel Manson who will also take the task of directing.
Each day’s windows will be featured on all social media platforms (search for Cley Harbour) so everyone will be able to admire them.
There will also be Carols on the Quay (near the Windmill in Cley), on Saturday 18 December between 5pm and 7pm.
After the success of the company’s latest original production “If I Were You & Dedicated Sorrowers” presented at The Venue Community and Arts Centre in Holt, the local am dram group is wasting no time and preparing what is set to be a great continuation to the successfully acclaimed play Miss Marble Strikes; Again, presented in 2019 at Sheringham Little Theatre to a sold out auditorium and receiver of fantastic reviews.
This event is now a firm favourite on the festive calendar with carol singing, a brass band, mulled wine and a fantastic raffle. Weather permitting; Father Christmas will be arriving by boat at approximately 6.30pm – a magical sight.
Simon Read, Chairman of Cley Harbour, said “In recent years, the harbour at Cley has been brought back to life as a result of a lot of hard work by the local community with support from the Parish Council. More work is needed to maintain and improve the harbour, so we are running this event as a fundraiser and anyone wishing to donate can do so by finding Cley Harbour on justgiving.com or by dropping a donation through the special letterbox at Porticus in the High Street. Cley Advent Windows is a very special way to spread some Christmas cheer and we are so grateful to our friends and supporters in the village who have come together to create their windows – it wouldn’t happen without them”.
With an experienced and talented cast of actors the play is in rehearsals at Aylsham High School and no doubt will be a great start of what promises to be a busy and successful 2022 for Stage Direct.

End of an Era
Sheringham sees the end of an era with the retirement of Lee Woodrow, better known as Woody of Woody – Works. Lee and his father Alex Woodrow come from a longstanding Sheringham family which goes back generations, known to most Sheringham folks, especially Lee in his white van.
Alex Woodrow, who sadly passed away earlier this year, was a local fisherman and involved with the RNLI (as was Lee) and is greatly missed by his family and all who knew him as someone always ready to help those in need. Alex worked with Lee for many years, helping him as much as possible before his death.
Now, after two decades, Lee has decided to close his business, a result of the general trading crisis and recent lockdown. Lee worked tirelessly to establish a strong business which provided a reliable, trustworthy and popular service in Sheringham and the surrounding areas and was always in great demand. He will be missed by many and has received numerous calls from loyal customers expressing their sadness at the closure of Woody -Works.

RNLI Wells receive £300 donation collected in a yellow wellie
James Dye, aged 11 years, has been raising money for Wells Lifeboats for the last three years by collecting donations in a yellow wellie stood on the reception counter at Silverline Marine in Brundall.
Silverline Marine belongs to the Dye family, and James has been collecting for RNLI Wells for the last three years in an old yellow wellie, which used to belong to him as a young boy. He travelled up to Wells lifeboat station with his Mum and Dad, to hand over the recent year’s donation of £300 to the RNLI Wells Treasurer, during a practice launch for the Wells all-weather lifeboat crew.
delighted he could join us to meet some of the volunteer lifeboat crew.’
The RNLI is the charity which helps to save lives at sea. Powered primarily by kind donations, our search and rescue service has been saving lives for nearly 200 years.
If you would like to make a donation to Wells RNLI please visit
www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rnli-wells All donations are very gratefully received.
James, a keen supporter of the RNLI, raised £110 during the first year, £220 in the second year, and during the most recent year he raised a fabulous £300, all through donations from customers who visited Silverline Marine on the Norfolk Broads.
To take it even further, the family business now invites visitors to donate £1 when they fill their boats up with water, to add to the donations already received for the RNLI.
RNLI Wells Lifeboat Treasurer, Lorraine Cracknell, said ‘it is always wonderful to receive donations for our lifeboat station, particularly when they are from children as young as James. We are very grateful to have him as one of our RNLI fundraising volunteers, and we were
Woodfields' Pupils Benefit from the New Carole Fields Therapy Centre
Despite the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns since March 2020, the construction and fit-out of the eagerly-awaited Carole Fields Therapy Centre, and the associated outside play areas and external landscaping at Sheringham Woodfields School are now complete and have been in full use since early Spring 2021.
The therapy centre is bringing a wide range of benefits to the physical and mental well-being to a high proportion of the school's pupils. Under the guidance of highly trained staff and supporting professionals, the children use specialist equipment which delivers important physical therapies. These opportunities maintain, develop and improve balance, muscle tone and strength and co-ordination. The centre provides opportunity for a breadth
of physical opportunity in a motivating way. The new space has also enabled the school to extend their offers of yoga, counselling, Rebound Therapy, therapeutic play and extension of sensory enriching activities.
Catherine Holyland, Assistant Head Teacher, Therapy Provision is delighted with the therapy centre and says: "The exceptional new therapy centre is a fine tribute to Carole Fields who was Chair of the school's governing body and a staunch supporter of the school for many years. The school has expanded and so the additional space is valued. We now have 145 pupils and 136 members of staff, so these new facilities are helping us to be able to improve learning experiences, remove barriers and equip pupils to be ready for learning and positively support

the physical well-being of an increasing number of children who attend the school from many parts of Norfolk."
Matthew Smith MBE, the Business Manager at Sheringham Woodfields School, is keen for external organisations to benefit from the school's new facilities, saying: "Outside school hours, the Carole Fields Therapy Centre can be hired by business and community groups. It has its own entrance, welfare and toilet facilities, and can provide a much-needed modern venue for meetings, exhibitions and a range of physical exercise activities." He added: "I will be happy to show around anyone interested in using the Centre's facilities."

Fluffet Man
73-year-old pensioner Nigel Holmes from Mundesley, Norfolk is looking to get to the top of the Christmas download charts with his home-made recording called Ding Dong Christmas, by Aunty Darling and the Fluffets. Holmes joins the battle for the number one slot with a catchy CROMER seasonal sing-along. “Why can’t I compete alongside the others? Dreaming big is my thing,” Local Trusted Tradesman said Nigel.

The song was created on a home computer in his spare room. “I had so much fun making this that I hope it comes over in the song. With a Kazoo and a few Santa sleighbells I somehow made the whole thing happen. I think it’s because I have imagination and a willingness to experiment.” The video that goes along with the song was also created in the spare room. Filmed on a phone and edited on that same computer.
Nigel Holmes is the brain behind Aunty Darling and the Fluffets. A gang of rainbow-coloured puppets that front the song. Nigel tells how they were the result of lockdown boredom. “My wife Brenda and I made the very first puppet from scraps we found in our loft. Foam rubber, glue and fluff were everywhere. Covid didn’t kill off our creativity.”
The Fluffets first appearance was on TikTok where you can currently view over 100 of their videos. This spread to Clapper, and they are now opening a channel on YouTube. Holmes points out that his puppets and their seasonal song are for everyone who enjoys Christmas. He also says that this group of offbeat characters were already singing odd stuff on social media. “It seemed the obvious step for them to pop up on a larger stage.”
The song Nigel has created is a mash-up of Ding Dong Merrily mixed with Good King Wenceslas. Then he says, he added some silliness. He admits that when he was a young lad in the church choir, he was always getting told off for singing more Glorias in the carols than he should. Now, many years later, he has been able to do just that. “Aunty Darling gets quite carried away and we hope that everyone will join in with her Gloria, Gloria, Glo-or-or-or-oria chorus.”
“In some ways this is striking a blow for us pensioners. Life and enjoyment don’t stop at a certain age. We still use our brains, can learn about modern tech and are very creative.”
Holmes says that he is fully aware that there are several famous contenders out there this year, but why should that stop him having a try? “Ed and Elton may turn out a polished product, but my sing-along, dance-along, everything-else-along song, made in my spare room, is totally real and full of the Christmas spirit. Something to belt out in the shower. Magical things happen at this time of year. Just ask Santa.”

New Judo Club in North Norfolk
North Norfolk Judo Club opened its doors for new members on September 16th at Alderman Peel High School, Wells-next-the-Sea, offering classes for ages 5 up to adults. Regular Coach Matt Lish is a retired Paramedic, 2nd Dan, and former Chairman of St Albans Judo Club.
Visiting Coaches are Thomas Lish 3rd Dan, Commonwealth Youth Champion, British Championships u21 Silver Medallist and Thomas, Matt and Paddy Lish GB Squad member, and his brother Paddy Lish, 2nd Dan, British Schools Champions and Dutch International Champion.
Since opening we have already secured our first National Medal, Sensei Tom secured the Gold at the British Judo Council National Championships last weekend and our ambition is to take a competition squad of our new members to compete within 2 years of opening our doors!
Judo is an excellent activity for young kids because it builds healthy and strong muscles early on, improves their cardio, and lowers their cholesterol. It is also a sport that builds discipline, focus and resilience.
We train on Thursday nights from 5.30pm (details on our Facebook page), and due to the popularity of our kid’s sessions are actively recruiting adult beginners or returners to come and join us!
North Norfolk Judo is a community (not for Profit) club, and we are also looking for local sponsorship towards mats and to make competition and participation accessible for all – if local businesses are interested in supporting us then please do get in touch! northnorfolkjudo@gmail.com or visit our website www.northnorfolkjudo.com

North Norfolk Vikings are demonstrating to all how their swimmers are progressing especially in their junior squads Evidence could be seen at an open competition staged at the UEA, promoted by the Diss Otters Club where swimmers attended from all over the Eastern Region.
Swim twins George and Zak Edridge excelled in both the 100m freestyle and breastsroke respectively with George getting the slight upper hand on his brother. George was fluent especially on the freestyle when he recorded a 1:25.52 and in the 100m breastsroke he finished one place ahead of his brother in 1:36.23, both of whom were below their entry time displaying a significant improvement from both brothers.
Esme and Reuben Seaman Esme Seaman, aged 11 and her younger brother Reuben aged 9, swam in no fewer than seven events between them. Esme looked determined and demonstrated her improved fitness when she came thirteenth with her 50m 51.28 over 50m butterfly. Graduating from the development squad, Reuben came second over 50m breaststroke in his heat and surprisingly did very well to finish in 1:06.49 coming eighth. Reuben also progressed in the 50m freestyle in 48.17 and he was joined in the same race by fellow Viking, Bailee Beighton who scored 49.24 with both boys coming ninth in their respective age group categories. A distinct improvement from the pair.
Meanwhile, Bailee’s elder sister Emily, at student at Aylsham High School, also got her name firmly on the scoreboard when she established herself in the 100 freestyle with 1:21.10 in fifteenth place but in the 100m breaststroke she finished twelfth in 1:45.58 with a massive improvement of thirty one seconds!
New member 10-year-old Winnie Browne made a creditable debut with the Vikings with both 50m freestyle (42.67 -sixth) and 50m backstroke (53.72 - fifth)) respectively. Vikings had forty-one personal bests and eight county qualifying times.

Come and Play Table Tennis
Our group meets every Wednesday from 9.30 to 11.30am in Weybourne Village Hall.
We have four tables available and about 15 members, with a good mix of men and women. Many of us are retired and enjoy the social benefit of meeting others. The standard of play varies from average to some very good games.
Playing Table Tennis was the second-best way of doing this after Ballroom dancing. It helps you to keep fit, stay alert and increase social contact. It will improve your agility, flexibility, balance, concentration, social mixing and you can improve your game quite quickly as well. So, if you are free on a Wednesday morning, have played the game at school or in the past, want to meet others and have a good time, please make contact.
We are open to players of all ages and would be very happy to see more young people join us.
The games are not quiet! On entering the Hall, you would hear squeals of delight, groans of despair but above all the sound of happy laughter.
If you are interested, please contact me on 01263 823699 or by email at d.collings123@btinternet.com.
A few years ago, Angela Ripon (BBC TV) researched the way to keep fit as we age.
