Christmas Busking

On Tuesday, 21st December my friend Kit and I played carols on our violins on Sheringham High Street. We hoped to raise money for the charity 'Crisis at Christmas' and aimed to collect around £150.

This fabulous charity helps to get homeless people off the streets. They provide hot drinks, Christmas dinners, advice and places to stay. Kit and I play together in a string group and together we managed to learn around 18 carols and songs. Our favourites were 'O Christmas Tree', 'The Holly and the Ivy’, ‘Good King Wenceslas' and 'Jingle Bells'.

Following a success on Tuesday (and good weather) we did it again on Wednesday and due to the generosity of the William Rawlings, aged 12 and Kit Shawyer, people of Sheringham, aged 11 these two sessions raised £327.22. Thank you to Arnold Keys for letting us play in front of their shop. William Rawlings.

Rural Charity Boost from Local Equestrian

The Rural Mental Health Support charity, YANA (You Are Not Alone), is just over £1500 better off following an Equestrian Charity Day run by local professional training and competition equestrian, Judith Barker (pictured).

Twenty-two local riders of mixed abilities gathered at Lime Kiln Farm at Thursford in late December, where Judith ran a challenging training day. Riders brought their own horses and were given extensive tips and technical guidance to help improve their techniques, all whilst negotiating Lime Kiln Farm’s Arena Eventing course of jumps. The training, done in small groups, put them through a variety of activities to suit their individual abilities, with riders supporting and encouraging each other throughout the day.

All entry fees generated by Judith for the training were given in full to YANA, together with the proceeds of the day’s raffle, cake sale and coffee stall.

In total, £1501.80 was raised, and a clearly delighted Judith Barker said afterwards, “It was great to support a local charity and one that I can relate to. YANA helps people working in rural and agricultural businesses and who might be suffering from poor mental health. The day itself and all the preparations have been a lot of hard work, but I had truly wonderful support from friends, family and prize sponsors, and they really made it possible.”

In the past Judith has raised money for the World Horse Welfare charity and East Anglian Air Ambulance, and she plans further events in 2022, ‘when the weather gets a little kinder’.

Help and support for householders worried about energy bills

It looks to be a difficult winter ahead for households this winter. Gas bills rising at an unprecedented rate, energy suppliers going out of business and shortages of lorry drivers leading to delays in heating oil deliveries – all these combine to be a big worry for residents across the region who are concerned about energy bills.

Factoring in the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, with many people having to stay at home for longer periods, increases the need to heat and light their homes, and cook for themselves and their families.

Dereham-based charity Community Action Norfolk (CAN) is offering advice sessions to people who may be worried about managing their electricity, gas, heating oil and water bills.

Low-income households especially run the risk of sliding into fuel poverty – not being able to afford to heat their homes and having to make the ‘heat or eat’ choice. It’s estimated that 43,000 households across Norfolk experience fuel poverty and around 600 premature deaths are directly attributable to health problems caused by inadequately heated homes.

Community Action Norfolk can deliver advice sessions on-line or on-site to community organisations, professional groups, tenants, householders, staff, volunteers and the public.

Anyone interested in joining a session or arranging a visit to their group or community should email office@communityactionnorfolk.org.uk or phone 01362 698216.

A Cracking Christmas!

A Note from the editor Another year gone and a new one to look forward to. How are your resolutions going?

Age Concern North Norfolk celebrated Christmas in style this year with a 20 foot tall real Christmas tree and the production of 61 meals in total, (31 Meals on Heels and Meals on Wheels delivered remotely).

With all the excesses of the festive table, not to mention finishing up the leftovers, I quite look forward to a simpler diet in the New Year.

The recent mild weather has encouraged me to get out for some exercise and all in all the winter sluggishness is starting to lift.

Santa visited to give out presents from under the tree and a good time was had by all.

There is much about climate change and changes in the environment in the media at present, and with that in mind, don’t forget about the Big Garden Birdwatch taking place on 28-30th January. It gives us all the opportunity to help monitor the effect of climate change and environmental factors on the wildlife we are most familiar with, the birds in our own gardens. No special equipment needed, and it only takes an hour. For more information go to rspb.org.uk and do your bit for our feathered friends.

The Manager sang to us and performed a skit with the help of the lovely Roy, 91 year old volunteer, on the Piano Accordion.

Whatever you are doing this month, enjoy your January magazine.

We opened again on Tuesday January 4th for lunches, activities, and other nice surprises.

Wrap up and stay well. Jo – Editor.

Government pilot scheme tackling drugs and county lines extended in Norfolk

Work to reduce drug related crime in Norfolk was given a huge boost with the announcement that the Central Government funded Project ADDER (Addiction, Diversion, Disruption, Enforcement and Recovery) pilot scheme would receive additional funding to extend the project beyond the initial March 2023 end date. The project will now run until March 2025 as was announced in the Government’s ‘From Harm to Hope’ 10-year drugs strategy earlier this month.

Project ADDER is a pilot scheme that was rolled out at the start of the year with the aim to reduce the rate of drug related deaths, the level of drug related offending, and the prevalence of drug use, predominately opiates and/or crack cocaine, in the most affected areas in England and Wales. Norwich was one of 5 initial areas identified as part of the project, but more have since been added as ADDER Accelerator schemes.

Project ADDER brings together public sector and charity sector partners to deliver a whole system, wraparound approach which not only

focuses on enforcement but also on diversion, treatment and recovery to reduce demand for drugs and the criminal activity associated in the Greater Norwich area. The project has now reached over 500 vulnerable people through active outreach or referral. Of those, over 90 people are now being treated by drug treatment services with a target to treat 250 at any one time before the project concludes.

Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This is a very positive step, a joint Policing and Public Health approach to the challenges of illegal drug use will make a huge difference. Project ADDER’s focus is not just about drug dealers and police enforcement, it’s also about giving users a chance to get the treatment they need. It will help rebuild their lives and bring down demand for the dealers. So far we’ve already reached out to more than 500 people as part of this project. By prioritising both policing and health-based approaches, ADDER gives us a chance to tackle demand and supply simultaneously, and really tackle the harm that drug use inflicts on Norfolk’s communities.”

Giles Orpen-Smellie, Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk said: “Put simply, drugs ruin lives and can be a blight on our communities. I firmly believe that one of the most effective ways for us to reduce crime, including drug dealing, is by tackling the root causes and this programme is one of the ways we can do just that. ADDER is delivered by a whole network of partners that have collaborated to bring a range of interventions together and I am proud that my office is one of those partners. Ensuring that there is the kind of support available that enables people to take a different path will be how we will start to see real change. Recovery and treatment programmes help to break that cycle of dependence whilst education, training and employment opportunities offer a genuine alternative. It is encouraging to see what ADDER is already achieving and I look forward to seeing the programme develop and grow over the coming years.”

RNLI Wells volunteers rescue walkers and dog cut off by tide on New Year’s Day

RNLI Wells inshore lifeboat was tasked by HM Coastguard at 4.55pm on 01 January 2022, to assist two people and their dog who were cut off by the tide in the dark, on Scolt Head Island between Burnham Overy and Brancaster.

The D class lifeboat, Peter Wilcox, launched from Wells Lifeboat Station with volunteer crew of three at 5.08pm on the top of the tide, and proceeded toward Burnham Overy harbour entrance.

The two people had set out from Burnham Overy at 11am for a walk with the dog. They were caught out by the incoming tide, which had filled the creeks they had crossed earlier with water. The Coastguard reported that the casualties had attempted to get back across the creek on the flooding tide. They were cold and wet, but safe having returned to higher ground on the eastern end of Scolt Head Island.

Whilst Wells inshore lifeboat was proceeding towards Burnham Overy harbour, the local Coastguard team managed to locate the two people by the walkers’ flashing light, signalling their whereabouts. The Coastguard was subsequently able to guide the lifeboat to their location. The inshore lifeboat arrived on scene at 5.38pm having navigated through the creeks. The casualties were wet and cold but did not require any medical assistance. They were helped onboard the lifeboat and taken through the harbour channel to Burnham Overy LARGE RANGE OF WE FIT WIPER BLADES Staithe, where they were met by the local CAR PARTS & BULBS Coastguard team at 6.05pm. & ACCESSORIES FREE OF CHARGE Wells lifeboat then departed back toward Wells harbour, arriving safely back at the boathouse at 6.30pm. The inshore lifeboat was then sanitised, rehoused and refuelled, and back on service at 7pm.

Chris Hardy, Wells Lifeboat Operations Manager, said ‘whilst today’s outcome was a good one, it may have not been the case had the weather had not been so unseasonably mild. It is essential that walkers check the tide times before setting out and return to the mainland at least four hours before high tide. People will undoubtedly continue to enjoy our coastline, so it is imperative that walks are planned taking the high tides into account’.

In the Loop with Sheringham Town Council The Councillors at Sheringham Town Council (STC) would like to wish residents and those who work in and visit the town, a Happy New Year. As we look forward to the year ahead, we will continue to write this column to keep residents up to date with news from your Town Council. The December Full Council meeting was another busy one where we agreed a number of actions including to adopt a Staff Wellbeing Policy to support the hard-working team of Town Council staff. We also agreed on a number of actions to address the climate crisis, including participation in a Norfolk County Council pilot scheme to increase local networking so that we can share knowledge and resources to help bring community ideas on the environment to life.

In addition, STC appointed two Climate Champions, Cllrs Brisbane and Treadway to support progress in meeting the Council’s climate change goals. The Council was also pleased

to approve grant applications to support Sheringham First Responders (£359.45) and The Carnival Committee for the Town’s Christmas lights and bunting (£2,479.17). The Council expressed their gratitude to these organisations for their work in supporting the community.

We have reviewed our Councillor Surgeries, which we started in the summer, and will hold them every two months at Sheringham Community Centre to accord with demand. We hope that you will come along and talk to your Councillors about any concerns you have about the town or just pop in and meet us for a chat. We will continue to invite Sheringham District and County Councillors to attend.

We are keen to meet residents and find out your views about the town and the things that matter most to you. A full list of dates for the year ahead will be published in next month’s column.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offe fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

With classic films such as Some Like it Hot and Breakfast at Tiffany’s to modern day hits like The Artist and Once, it promises to be a weekend of fun and laughter and there’s nothing quite like being part of a crowd as the lights go down and the credits start to roll.

Tickets at £5 per film are affordable and if you’re a real movie aficionado you can purchase a weekend ticket which will give you access to all 10 films for the discounted price of £40.

Miss Marble Takes a Break is Stage Direct’s Newest Production

Local wildlife photographer Paul Richards is exhibiting his fine art nature images at the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Cley Marshes Visitor Centre. The exhibition runs for two weeks from 19th January to 1st February inclusive (opening hours 10am - 4pm).

Uneasy calm leads to chaos in the Mo-Dell household, with an unexpected, untimely homecoming of their stoic housekeeper, Miss Marble.

With the help of a cheeky cockney CCTV man, Melissa hatches a sophisticated plot to entrap her husband George, in coital shenanigans with their temporary housekeeper.

Paul, who lives in West Runton, has been one of the finalists in three of the recent Bird Photographer of the Year Competitions and had several entries shortlisted in this year’s Wild Art Photography Competition including Chasing Hares, a winner in the

Unaware of his wife’s plot; whilst Melissa is out that evening, George embarks on a plot of his own, employing a chef to create a romantic meal for himself and his mistress Meg. Everyone’s plans are foiled when Meg (the other woman) Overhears Melissa’s plan. Greg, Melissa’s prearranged gigolo/gardener arrives on cue and ends up with a client, but in the confusion of a power cut; exactly who will it be?

Set to premiere at Sheringham Little Theatre on January 20th and running until the 22nd, Miss Marble Takes a Break will be Stage Direct’s 37th production, and once again it will be an original script written by Nigel Manson who will also take the task of directing.

After a career in countryside management Paul is now following his passion for wildlife through photography.

Chasing Hares

After the success of the company’s latest original production “If I Were You & Dedicated Sorrowers” presented at The Venue Community and Arts Centre in Holt, the local am dram group is wasting no time and preparing what is set to be a great continuation to the successfully acclaimed play Miss Marble Strikes; Again, presented in 2019 at Sheringham Little Theatre to a sold out auditorium and receiver of fantastic reviews.

Paul will be on hand at the Centre throughout his exhibition to give advice to any budding wildlife photographers. Paul is also available for oneto-one workshops for those wanting to improve their wildlife photography.

With an experienced and talented cast of actors the play is in rehearsals at Aylsham High School and no doubt will be a great start of what promises to be a busy and successful 2022 for Stage Direct.

Autumn Notes from the Commons

The autumn months (September, October and November) can be summed up as warm and wet with frost virtually non-existent locally. Sunshine was also below average in October particularly.

The following notes are generally of wildlife sightings made by Mark Clements and me as we walk around the Commons but also include sightings from other observers.

As September started the anticipation that some autumn migrants might turn up was high and nine Chiffchaffs and a Pied Flycatcher (03 Sept) looked like a promising beginning. The flycatcher was still present the next day (04 Sept) and a Whimbrel flew over. The warm sunny day also brought out the reptiles and a Slow-worm and Adder were trying to share the same basking area. While watching the Adder a Grass Snake also appeared.

Seven species of butterfly were also noted including a Brown Argus and the first of the Ivy Bees was seen. Other migrants turned up later in the week (06 Sept) including a Wryneck, another Pied Flycatcher and two Common Whitethroats. A Little Egret was also observed flying over. Mark spotted a Hobby heading east (07 Sept) and there were 22 Buzzards drifting west (in groups of 4-6) plus a Red Kite. Five male Vapourer moths were also recorded. Vapourer moth males are chestnut brown in colour and fly erratically around in daylight searching for females. The females are wingless and tend to be sedentary, giving off pheromones to attract the males. Each

Candle-snuff Fungus

female can lay 100s of eggs, which normally overwinter and hatch the following May. A moth trap ran overnight (08 Sept) produced 25 species including

Light Emerald and Oak Hook-tip. A Hobby headed east (09 Sept) and a pair of Keeled Skimmers were seen. Another Hobby was recorded (10 Sept) and a Silver-washed Fritillary was reported by Lee Slater (11 Sept).

There was a small movement of Swallows and House Martins east (17 Sept) and one of the UK’s largest slugs, the Leopard Slug was noted (19 Sept). The first of the returning Pink-footed Geese were heard overflying by Cherry Farrow (22 Sept) and many Ivy Bees were present. Mark reported further Pink-feet (24 Sept) and a passing Tree Pipit. A Great White Egret heading south was reported that day by David Bilham.

Siberian Chiffchaff

A flock of 11 Mistle Thrushes heading south were seen (28 Sept) and seven Spiked Shieldbugs were noted (29 Sept) including one feeding on a White Ermine moth caterpillar.

Five species of butterfly, including a Painted Lady were flying (01 Oct) and the first reported Redwings were seen (05 Oct) as well as two Red Kites. Up to 10 Red Admirals were visiting Ivy flowers (07 Oct) and a Brimstone butterfly plus three male Vapourers were also seen. The following day (09 Oct) a Yellow-browed Warbler was present and also two Firecrests were reported. The Yellowbrowed Warbler was seen with a mixed tit flock (11 Oct) and a Brambling flew west. A further three Bramblings were reported heading west (13 Oct) along with some 68 Chaffinches in small groups, also four Lesser Redpolls were present in the scrub. A small flock of nine Bearded Tits were

picked up by Mark as they came in high from the west and then headed south (18 Oct). A Mediterranean Gull was noted (24

Leopard Slug Oct) and again a few days later (28 Oct) when a Grey Wagtail was also seen.

The month stated (02 Nov) with Mark finding a single male Bearded Tit in the central marsh reedbed and observing a Raven and then a Marsh Harrier heading west. A Rose-ringed Parakeet was also reported by Trevor Warren.

The UKs largest aphid, the Giant Willow Aphid had also reappeared on various small willow stems and a few days later (07 Nov) a Syrphid hoverfly was observed laying its eggs among the aphids. A Slow-worm was also seen that day as well as Candle-snuff fungus. A Siberian Chiffchaff was noted (09 Nov) and heard calling. Its call is different from that of the Common Chiffchaff, likened by some to be similar to a Bullfinch. Two Canada Geese were also seen flying west. Doug and Jenny Cullern reported a sighting of a Peregrine Falcon (13 Nov) and further sightings of the Siberian Chiffchaff were made (16/19 Nov). Three Common Chiffchaffs were present (22 Nov) along with a Goldcrest and a Harlequin Ladybird.

A sunny day (23 Nov) brought out a Red Admiral, a Common Darter dragonfly and a Celery Fly, one of the small picture-wing flies, so-called because of their patterned wings. Another sighting of a Raven (29 Nov) and the Siberian Chiffchaff completed the autumn period.

Wills, Families, and Inheritance - The Elephant in the Room? 32% of UK adults have not planned to divide their assets equally among their children upon death.

According to a survey conducted by Charles Stanley Wealth Management, 16% of British adults do not plan to divide their assets equally, whereas a further 16% have not decided how they plan to share their wealth.

Of the 16% who have planned to distribute their estate unevenly, the most common reasons for deciding to split their estate unevenly were based on taking into account each child's financial circumstances (thereby gifting a higher share to less wealthier children) and taking into account how well each child looked after them later on in life.

The same survey found that more than a third of UK adults would be upset if they were on the receiving end of an uneven split. It also found that only one in five UK adults said that their relatives had talked openly about how they intended to distribute their estate and that 15% of UK

adults do not have or did not leave a will.

Fear of causing a rift between children can result in people not openly discussing their plans, which could cause disputes between children upon death and increase costs to the estate, which will reduce the overall value of the estate. The fear of causing a rift could also result in people not making any plans at all, which may mean that their estate is not divided how they would have liked after death.

It is therefore essential for individuals to ensure that they have a will in place and to make their family aware of their plans and wishes regarding inheritance during their lifetime.

At Clapham & Collinge, we have a team of specialist private client lawyers who can help you through every stage of the will-drafting process and ensure, insofar as possible, that your estate is divided in accordance with your wishes upon death. We understand that inheritance planning can be a difficult topic for many people. We are sensitive to clients' needs and we

aim to provide peace of mind to clients, so that they are safe in the knowledge that their affairs are in order prior to death.

We pride ourselves on providing Wills that give you complete peace of mind and legal assurance that your wishes will be carried out once you are gone so you know your family will be taken care of.

New Year’s Fireworks 2022 2022 is off to a spectacular start thanks to a splendid New Year’s firework display at Cromer Pier.

A formidable crowd turned out in Cromer to support the first display since January 2020. The astonishing variety of rockets could be seen as far away as Overstrand beach.

The fireworks began shooting at about 5:05pm on Saturday 1st January. There were brocade and chrysanthemum style rockets in yellow and white, and also palm, peony, and pistil type rockets in greens, purples, and oranges. Some had two colour or more in the same rocket. Short fuse comet fireworks and roman candles exploded nearer to the pier itself; they lit up the pavilion theatre and the ocean in spectacular and lurid extravagance. The show built up to a stunning climax after about 15 minutes, in which the last rows of rockets exploded near simultaneously to signal the end of the show. The fireworks were once again provided by Titanium Fireworks Ltd and paid for by generous donations by collection on the night.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although I thanked most of our volunteers in the last issue, I did forget to mention Olive, who checks the articles for the Times to ensure there are no errors or omissions and also Karen who comes to feed and socialise the cats at Dilham each day. We should also not forget all the lovely people who contact Stephanie and offer new and loving homes to the cats in care.

Several more cats and kittens left before the Christmas break, including Florence, Floki, Sasha and Basil plus kittens Anton, Jojo, Tilly and Ali. Two more kittens will be re-homed early in the new year, but they won’t be going anywhere. More about these very special little kittens next time.

Last time I mentioned that Barbara had organised a collection in Tesco’s in Sheringham only to discover that another collection was in the pipeline at Morrisons. I am delighted to advise that a total of £508.35 was raised at these two events. We thank Barbara and her team for manning the collection boxes at this busy time and for the cat loving people who donated to help with the work that we do.

Stephanie has received several calls recently, and from her conversations with the caller she has become aware that they have been under the impression they had been in contact with us and not another local cat charity. One lady seemed to think that her reserved ginger kitten was in our care. Although at that time we had two ginger and white kittens, neither had been put up for adoption let alone reserved. As this lady did not leave a number Stephanie could not advise her that this was not the case so informed the other charity to make them aware of the situation. In another instance when returning a call left on the answer phone, the lady in question

intimated that we had already taken her cat into care. Stephanie was able to advise this was not the case.

Please be aware that, apart from the telephone number for neutering the only contact number is the one listed below and all communications relating to cats are dealt with on this number.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number Sasha, one of the cats recently is for vouchers only and will not be re-homed able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858.

Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first served basis, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

The North Norfolk Veterans Hub

The North Norfolk Veterans Hub based in Sheringham meets weekly in the Sheringham Shed in Wyndham Street. The meetings, every Thursday start at 1900hrs and go on till 2100hrs. During the meetings tea and coffee is available along with the opportunity for ex-Forces Veterans to get together in an atmosphere which promotes well being and comradeship.

A veteran is a very special person, they have served their country yet, in most cases, when they leave the Military, they find it somewhat difficult to relate to their new civilian surroundings, this feeling can lead to individuals feeling isolated or remote and frustrated.

The North Norfolk Veterans Hub was set up with the help of the Outside the Wire Charity, they underwrite our HQ footprint at the Sheringham Shed whilst providing help advice and guidance for any Veteran who needs it or indeed confidential counselling. Our main aim is to provide the Veteran with a safe place where they can speak their mind, share experiences and basically be comfortable with their mates, knowing that they will not be judged.

Set up by Rod a Royal Marine Veteran and Steve a Royal Air Force Veteran the North Norfolk Veterans Toys and tins Hub regularly arranges team activities. These include range mornings at the Holt Air Rifle range, a military walk on the North Norfolk Coast, visiting defence bunkers and dummy airfields from WW2. A trip to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, the Norfolk Tank Museum and the RAF Marham Aviation Heritage Centre. We have also undertaken pilgrimage tours to the Battlefields of France at the Somme and Belgium in Ypres, where the team laid a Veterans wreath at the Menin Gate.

As you can see, we are an active group who also believe in helping others,

The Hub raised over £160.00 through donations and the Outside the Wire Charity contributed £100.00 in Tesco Vouchers. Rod and Steve went to Tesco in Sheringham with a shopping list from the Salvation Army and were overjoyed when the Tesco Manager Nick also contributed a further £100.00 of items for donation to the project. In total £360.00 worth of goods were delivered to the Salvation Army HQ, where it was gratefully received.

If you are a Military Veteran living in North Norfolk and like the sound of our friendship group and wish to join us, please check out our page on Facebook - the North Norfolk Veterans Group. Hayes + Storr expand team in time for major changes in family law

Hayes + Storr Solicitors have announced two new appointments to boost their family department which sees the long-established law firm continue to grow at a time of major change for family law.

Solicitors, Zuzanna Pogorzelska and newly qualified Emma George, will work alongside senior family solicitor Maria Endall and director Rob Colwell to bolster the family department in what has been a tumultuous year for families up and down the UK.

Director and head of the family department, Rob Colwell said: “There is little doubt the lockdowns have been extremely challenging, and sadly

the pressure pushed many families to breaking point. The pandemic has changed everything, and the legal sector is no exception. The pace in which reforms are being made has increased rapidly.

“Family law has undergone a massive overhaul, and it looks as though the changes are here to stay. Remote hearings and the online divorce petition portal have enabled family law to operate throughout the pandemic. The new no fault Left to right: Maria Endall, Zuzanna divorce laws are imminent, Pogorzelska, Emma George and Rob Colwell which means the whole process for divorcing couples will become a lot more straightforward.”

The ‘no fault divorce’ law is due to take effect in England and Wales in April 2022, which means that couples no longer need to apportion blame to get divorced. This is seen by many in the legal sector as being the most important element of the new laws.

Both newly appointed solicitors will work across a variety of family law matters including divorce and separation, financial and child arrangements, cohabitation agreements, prenuptial agreements, and civil partnerships.

Crisis? It’s just another winter’s tale Joan stumbled downstairs on Christmas Eve and pulled the newspaper out her letterbox. “Crisis. What crisis?” screamed the Daily Depress headline. “They must be on a different planet,” she thought. For a start the turkeys had all gone on strike.

Pigs may fly but now they were deemed too fat to eat. So, no pigs in blankets either. And as she walked round the empty shelves in her local supermarket, she realised that was the least of her worries. But life must go on Joan told herself. So, despite the cost, she forced herself to turn on the gas oven and stick in a nut roast along with some unidentified roadkill and thought herself lucky: many couldn’t eat it anyway. With no dentists available their

teeth were falling out.

The newspaper said Santa had furloughed his reindeer. Prancer had nicked the sleigh and gone off to do deliveries for Asda. So, Santa had decided to go green and had bought the latest BMW electric sleigh, complete with heated seats and LED lights. Having filed his flight plan he found there were no charging points in Antarctica and all the snow had melted due to global warming. Meantime back at the factory the elves were revolting, having been given only a 1% pay rise. Their union called it “derisory” and instructed them not to load up the sacks. Not that it mattered - all the kid’s presents were stuck in containers somewhere in the China sea.

On page 3 more cheerful news - a new Covid variant which could put most of us in hospital. That she could handle. Bur the thought that she might find herself in the next bed to Boris brought her out in a cold sweat and a nasty little rash. Joan switched on the TV after calculating she could just about afford the electricity so long as she didn’t put the heating on for a week. There was the Minister for Truth and Happiness, beaming at her insanely and telling her: ”There is no crisis. It is just a bump in the road.”

She screamed at the telly: “Try telling that to my friends Brian and Mary.” They opened their front door the other day and gazed at their empty driveway. They then noticed the pothole in front of their house had enlarged, swallowing up their Range Rover.

Had they been able to use the car it wouldn’t have mattered because a group of people decided that supergluing themselves to the nearby motorway would solve the world’s climate crisis. When midnight arrived on New Year’s Eve Joan settled back in her chair, wrapped in blankets and cuddling a hot water bottle, thinking maybe 2022 will be a better year. There was the comforting and reassuring sight of Big Ben. As it struck Midnight, the clanger fell off, resulting in Big Ben heralding in the new year by striking 23 o’clock. Crisis? No. It’s just another Winter’s Tale.

A Cameo of Evening Hidden in the darkening wood, a vixen screams her intentions of attracting a mate. In the churchyard, a barn owl spots a vole in the long grass, and silently drops in for supper.

Plumes of scented wood smoke, teased by a playful breeze, chase each other across the rooftops of cottages scattered alongside the winding lanes. Newly lit candles, fluttering in the windows, mirror the pale stars taking their places in the deepening velvet sky.

An ancient oak tree that guards the village green, cradles the new moon in its long bare branches. Close by, in the Blacksmiths cottage, a baby cries. The night listens; a mother sighs.

New Group for Sheringham

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) are looking for volunteers

Lockdown has impacted all of our lives in one way or another. This is also true for those meeting in groups, and several groups who have met for many years, now feel it is time to ‘call it a day’.

Could you spend a couple of hours a week or even an hour a month helping a family with a child who accesses our hospices in their own home?

However, we all need social contact where possible, and to this end, St Andrew’s Methodist Church would like to offer the second Thursday afternoon of each month as a ‘gathering place’.

Caring for a seriously ill child or young person can put a lot of extra demand on a family. The aim of the Help at Home service is to put a caring individual into a family’s home to provide everyday practical support such as cooking, sibling support, cleaning and gardening. We provide you with the necessary support and training, all you need to do is provide some of your precious time.

The first afternoon will take place at 2.30pm on Thursday 13th January to see what shape such a meeting should take and who is interested. It is open to anyone of any age. Please contact Anne Barker (01263) 824887 or annebarker@paston.co.uk for further details.

If you would like any more information or to apply, then please contact Anne at anne.rayner@each.org.uk or call 07771 275320. Thank You.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

On 7 December we had our usual excellent Christmas lunch at the Links Hotel in West Runton – there was no speaker this time, but it was still a very enjoyable occasion. Come the New Year, on 11 January Paul Rundle will be speaking to us. Then on 1 February we look forward to hearing from Phyllida Scrivens who will be speaking on “The Great Thorpe Railway Disaster of 1874”.

If you would like to know more about the club, please visit our website www.candsprobus.club or contact our Lunch Secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306

Donation of £665,000 from Cromer Community and Hospital Friends

A new cancer unit at Cromer Hospital has benefitted from a donation of £665,000 to fund equipment thanks to the Cromer Community and Hospital Friends.

A range of equipment has been purchased for the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre, including Prostate Biopsy equipment, furniture and a state-of-the-art point of care testing blood analyser. The centre, which opened in September this year, provides chemotherapy treatment, space for outpatient appointments and minor surgery, plus a Macmillan information and support centre, helping people to navigate the practical, emotional and financial challenges that can arise following a cancer diagnosis.

David White, NNUH Chairman, says: “We commend the outstanding efforts of the Friends who have worked tirelessly to support us over the years and especially with such a generous donation for the new centre. The money raised will benefit thousands of cancer patients over the coming years from North Norfolk and the surrounding area.”

Shirley Davies, Chair of the Cromer Community and Hospital Friends, says: "As a small charity run by volunteers we were daunted by the task

of raising half a million pounds - our biggest project by far! However, we soon realised that the community was really behind us, and it is thanks to them that we not only achieved our target, but exceeded it within eighteen months, even with Covid restrictions in place for most of that time. Our sincere thanks to all our amazing supporters!"

The £4.85million cancer centre, funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and the Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals Charity, will bring treatment and support services closer to home for thousands of people.

It has been built as part of the response to predictions, by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, that demand for local cancer services could increase by more than 200 per cent over ten years.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society had a rather different visitor on 1st December

Sarah Toon came from her home in North Walsham to tell members about The Art of Construction and Architecture. Sarah is a member of the Royal Photographic Society - perhaps no surprise there - and very unusually the Society of International Commercial and Industrial Photographers. In fact, Sarah says she is the only photographer in East Anglia qualified to go onto working building sites to take photographs.

Sarah’s Practice built up from agreeing to photograph the reconstruction of Wells Maltings, which she followed over the months from start to finish. And she proudly says that from the contacts that she made on that job, so much of her present very busy practice has developed.

IS YOUR CONSERVATORY TOO HOT IN THE SUMMER & TOO COLD IN THE WINTER?

Sarah told members that she does all her photography hand-held; tripods are seldom practicable on a building site, but anyway, she needs the freedom to move around and point the camera where the desired image can be achieved at just the angle she wants.

Travelling all over the country, Sarah is at home on a London skyscraper, a domestic house or a new Starbucks! Her job is to capture the essence of a building and to bring it to life.

North Norfolk Photographic Society meets on alternate Wednesdays at Cley Village Hall. Information about the Club and of the programme of meetings can be found on the website www.nnps.uk.

Soda bread

What can be more comforting on a cold day that a hot bowl of soup and some fresh baked bread?

I had a friend round for lunch the other day, having made some soup the night before to use up the last of the Christmas stilton and broccoli, I realized I had no fresh bread. With no time or energy to start kneading and proving I decided to give soda bread a try. What a revelation - fresh, crusty, delicious bread in under an hour. Result!

If you thought baking bread was too long winded and arduous for you, think again, this will change your mind, I guarantee.

Ingredients 170g wholemeal flour (I used spelt but any will do) 170g plain flour + extra for dusting

1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 290ml buttermilk

Method Preheat your oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6

Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl, then make a well in the centre, pour the buttermilk into the well and mix with a fork until you have a soft dough. (If it is a little dry, add a small amount of milk until you have the consistency of a scone mixture).

Turn your dough out onto a floured surface and knead briefly to bring the dough together (no stretching or pounding), form into a round and flatten slightly.

Place on a floured baking sheet, cut a deep cross in the top of the round, not all the way through. Place in the middle of the oven for about 30 mins, or until golden brown and it sounds hollow when you tap the bottom. Leave to cool on a wire rack.

Serve warm with soup, delicious toasted for breakfast or with a good smear of butter and your favourite cheese. Jo - Editor

A Right Roasting!

January is a time to hunker down, cosy up with snuggly blankets, light the candles and eat comfort food, but that doesn’t mean it has to be unhealthy. I’m always in favour of dishes that make a cook’s work easy, and this one is certainly no exception. Roasting vegetables brings out their best flavours and keeps nutrients viable; it’s also ridiculously easy. I must admit I was sceptical about whether roasting cauliflower would make it as delicious as everyone online said, but oh my, they are so right! There's a world of difference between

boiled cauliflower (please don't ever do that) and the sublime sweetness and earthiness of roasted cauliflower. It elevates it up from a side dish to the main event. Serve it up with the creamiest of mustard mash potato and you have a dreamy winter dinner.

Roasted Cauliflower Supper - Serves 2

3 large white potatoes, peeled and diced A little cream Butter 2 Heaped teaspoons of wholegrain mustard seasoning 1 medium fresh cauliflower, outer leaves removed Olive oil Himalayan or sea salt Tablespoon of dried Ramson (or your favourite herb) Coconut oil, for frying

To roast the cauliflower, massage olive oil into it and place in an ovenproof dish. Scatter over the ramsons and a little salt and turn the cauliflower in it to ensure it is covered on all sides.

A huge thank you to all our guests, staff and suppliers who have supported us over the past two years.

We wish you all a very happy New Year, full of fun, friends and freedom. ... from all of us at The Grove

Cover the veg tightly, not allowing the foil to touch the cauli. Place into a preheated oven on 160° for 2 and a half hours.

Half an hour before the end of this time, place potatoes in a large pan of salted water and bring to the boil, then simmer until a knife goes through them easily.

Drain well and mash with the cream, butter and mustard until creamy then season to taste.

Slice the cauliflower carefully into 4 thick steaks and put the coconut oil into a large non-stick frying pan, and heat until hot. Carefully place the cauliflower steaks into the oi and fry to char them slightly on both sides, then serve with the mash. Carolyn Burn

Privacy in Family Law Proceedings by Maria Endall, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr Solicitors

It is important for anyone involved in family law proceedings, whether in relation to marriage breakdown (except defended divorces, which are held in open court), child arrangements or domestic abuse to understand that such proceedings are held in private and that the parties’ involvement in these proceedings must be kept confidential to protect the privacy of the parties and any children involved.

Court orders in respect of child arrangements come with a very clear warning about the confidentiality of proceedings, that is: that the parties involved are not to be publicly disclosed without the permission of the court.

Publicly disclosing the names of the parties or any papers from family proceedings to people or organisations outside those proceedings could amount to contempt of court. The consequences of which are extremely serious and include being fined, having your assets seized or even imprisonment for up to two years.

The question of whether a disgruntled party could use their right to freedom of expression to expose details of the proceedings has recently been considered by the High Court. In this case the father posted comments on social media and displayed references on his car about his dissatisfaction with the judicial process. He also made threatening and abusive comments about the children’s mother, the children’s guardian, the social worker, and trial judge.

The children’s guardian applied to the court for an injunction to stop him, not only because she felt it was harassment and vilification of her, but also because what he was doing made it obvious that his children had been involved in private Children Act proceedings.

In this case, the court had to balance the father’s right to freedom of expression against the guardian’s and children’s rights to respect for private and family life. The judge came down in favour of the guardian’s and children’s rights over the father’s.

Whilst acknowledging the importance of ensuring parents involved in such proceedings can voice their grievances, the judge held that this did not extend to them making untrue, offensive, or derogatory comments about those involved in the proceedings.

The injunction was made against the father and the case was referred to the Attorney General for consideration of whether his conduct amounted to contempt of court by way of interference with the administration of justice.

It is important for parties in family proceedings to be aware, therefore, of the importance of not sharing or posting online, or in any other way, information, or material regarding any family law proceedings. Furthermore, even if the names of the parties or children are not mentioned, it may still be obvious from who

is sharing the material, who those parties and children are, and therefore, fall foul of the requirement to keep such details confidential.

If you are experiencing unacceptable behaviour from a former partner, there is legal action you can take to stop them. A non-molestation order can be used to prevent your former partner from doing certain things, like physically assaulting you, harassing you, or coming near your home or place of work. It can cover a wide variety of actions, such as unwanted text messages and comments on social media.

If information has been publicly disclosed which makes your children’s involvement in family court proceedings obvious, an application for contempt can be made, which may result in the perpetrators conduct being treated as interfering with the course of justice.

The nurse-led service helping patients with minor injuries this winter Winter is traditionally a very busy time for the NHS, which is why it is important to access the right service for our healthcare needs first time.

The cold weather brings the risk of slips and trips and minor injuries, which can be dealt with by the nurse-led Cromer Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Cromer and District Hospital.

The service, which is supported by the x-ray department, is open seven days a week from 8am to 7.45pm for a range of minor injuries. On an average day there are two nurse practitioners and a senior healthcare assistant on duty at Cromer MIU.

Kath Downes, Emergency nurse practitioner, said: “This time of year, we see a lot of patients who have injured themselves as the nights get dark fast and when we get the first icy conditions of winter, we get lots of slips and there are several fractures and dislocations that we can manipulate and can refer patients to plastics or orthopaedics if they require further treatment.”

“We can treat children over the age of one and we usually see a rush of attendances after school and early evening for minor injuries.”

Emergency Nurse Practitioner Kath Downes examining a patient's hand injury

“Any illnesses, major trauma and long-term conditions need to be seen elsewhere and we’d always recommend patients phoning ahead by calling 01603 646230.”

Patients are required to wear a mask when coming to a healthcare setting.

Anyone with coronavirus symptoms, which includes a new continuous cough, high temperature or loss of taste or smell are advised to book a PCR test and contact NHS 111 first. Cromer MIU can deal with the following injuries: ● Minor head injuries (with no loss of consciousness) ● Simple wounds ● Simple eye conditions, foreign body, corneal abrasions ● Minor burns ● Soft tissue injury ● Bites and stings, with no associated complications, or acute reaction ● Simple fractures ● Fingers that may be broken or dislocated For more information, visit

Coltishall Clinic. Helping you achieve your ideal body shape

Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted dangers of obesity. Obesity is a major worldwide health issue. It puts us at a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, some cancers and a large number of other medical problems.

Unfortunately most of us struggle to achieve weight loss without any help. Ideally we want to lose inches but preserve muscle mass and skin elasticity.

So, what determines our body shape? Body shape is determined by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors are our genetics, metabolic makeup and body type. Extrinsic factors are very much related to our lifestyle, diet, activity and exercise levels that we engaging in.

Essentially body shape is determined by our bone structure, muscle mass and distribution, fat mass and distribution and skin elasticity

So how can we help? We can help you achieve your ideal body shape with the help of our treatments.

This includes:

▪ Weight loss services ▪ Fat melting injections and machines ▪ Body contouring with laser liposculpture ▪ Fat transfer minimally invasive surgery ▪ Skin tightening with radiofrequency and lasers ▪ Skin boosters and collagen stimulation ▪ Skin removal surgeries ▪ Muscle stimulation and building with focused electromagnetic energy

If there is an excess fat around the internal organs- best way to reduce it is by diet and exercise. Mono-polar RF machines are the only devices shown to help reduce this fat and we have one of these machines at our Clinic.

Finally in patients near their ideal body weight but with resistant localised areas of fat, liposuction is considered the gold-standard

Jaymic Systems Ltd

option for body contouring. We carry it out under pure local anaesthesia. It is a walk-in, walk-out procedure with fantastic results.

We also offer surgical options such as modified and mini-tummy tucks and arm-lifts also under pure local anaesthesia.

We are uniquely placed to offer all these options to our patients under one roof. This allows us to device a customised treatment programme rather than be limited by only a few choices.

The focus will be around highly visible community engagement, working with local neighbourhood policing teams and partners to deliver targeted problem-solving activity, hot spot policing and crime prevention in local areas across the county. The CPT have conducted 24 patrols since the beginning of December, equating to approximately 68 hours of visible foot patrols.

This renewed focus will see officers becoming more visible in their communities, finding out the issues which matter most and putting measures in place to address those concerns.

To support these policing priorities, and to boost the neighbourhood policing capacity, the Community Policing Team (CPT) has been formed under the Community Safety Command. The aim of the CPT is to support local policing teams with neighbourhood issues and problems that require increased visibility, increased community engagement and increased enforcement, by utilising the additional resources and specialist skills that the officers within the team have.

So far, the team have supported local beat officers across the county and have assisted with:

This has resulted in a total of five stop searches, eight intelligence submissions, nine live investigations and two arrests. Chief Superintendent Dave Buckley for County Policing Command said: “We remain committed to dealing with the issues that are effecting our local communities, to make the people of Norfolk feel safe.

“It is vital that we are visible and that we reach out to our residents to understand their concerns and offer solutions as to how we can deal with the issues that really matter to them. “The recent launch of the Community Policing Team will help to assist local officers with added resources and specialist skills needed to deal with crime hotspots through problem solving.”

Car Park Christmas for Sheringham Church

Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham has held two of its Christmas services in the open air, including a joint carol service with Sheringham Salvation Army band.

The Car Park Carol service took place on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon on December 5, when the Sheringham Salvation Army band led the music. Around eighty people attended, and everyone agreed that the band provided a wonderful festive atmosphere.

The guest appearance of some dubious timbrel dancers, bearing a remarkable resemblance to some of the Lighthouse leadership team, provided some laughter during the service, but it is understood they will not be joining the Sheringham SA corps!

The Lighthouse car park sparkled with glowing Christingles the following week as the Car Park Christingle provided an opportunity for everyone to sing a reflective “Silent Night” whilst holding a Christingle

orange lit with a glow stick.

The crowd attending included several families, and everyone was invited to take their Christingle home to remind them of the real reason behind the festive celebrations.

Ian Savory, senior leader at Lighthouse said “We held our carol services outdoors last year because of the necessary restrictions at that time, and decided that we would capture the festive atmosphere again this year, because our Saviour’s birth does give us a lot to celebrate”

Both events culminated with seasonal refreshments, with some of the mince pies kindly donated by Sheringham Tesco.

The photos are courtesy of Lighthouse Community Church.

Happy New Year from Runners-next-the-Sea

Local running club Runners-nextthe-Sea (RntS) would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy 2022 and warmly welcome anyone looking to start or restart their running journey.

extremely grateful to Holkham Estate who allow them to train within their grounds, both within the park and on the beach. During the winter the club train around Wells and Fakenham. Members enjoy taking part in a range of events including Park Run, roads races, cross country events and track races, although there Is no expectation for members to race.

RntS was formed by Kevin Short (Chairman) and Evette Price (Endurance Coach) in May 2014 and formally became registered with the athletics governing body England Athletics in April 2018.

From originally being a club of 25, it has now grown to over 130 members from all over North Norfolk, with members ranging in age from 12 to over 77.

The club meet on Monday and Thursday evenings with members often choosing to race at a weekend. During the summer months RntS are

RntS pride themselves on supporting the local community and facilitate the annual Wells Carnival fun run, as well as hosting an annual Couch to 5k programme which has been a great success over the years. In November 2022 they plan to open up their annual 5mile (approx.) beach race to non- members. Katy's Midas Touch at Gala

North Norfolk Viking Swimmers Katy Coleman and Ruby Tracey are the latest to qualify for the County Championships when Katy won a hat-trick of gold medals and a silver. Ruby achieved two bronze medals at the same, final qualifying gala at the UEA. just before Christmas.

In the 100m butterfly Katy came back from behind as at the first 25m she was in fourth position. Demonstrating diligence and tenacity she was in first place at the final turn. However she was pushed all the way over the final 25m by Millie Harris of Wisbeach but Katy was not going to relinquish the lead she had fought so hard for; finishing a split second ahead in 1:12.38. to take the gold.

Her second gold came in the 100m freestyle

when she ironically defeated a field of 100 with her 1:04.31 and then in the 50m freestyle it was gold again in 29.16. defeating no fewer than 131 swimmers. However, Katy was still not done, because she got a silver in the 50m butterfly with 32.37.

Meanwhile, Ruby was in contention all the way in the100 backstroke. Her nonchalant tumble turns were dexterously timed on either side which made all the difference for her to take the bronze medal in 1:15.84. Consistency was a key component again in her 100m breaststroke when she did the last three 25m each in 22 seconds on her way to her second bronze medal in 1:26.59

Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community SDFC needs your votes and Tesco tokens to get a share of Tesco’s Community Grants fund Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community (SDFC) are bidding for a cash boost from the Tesco Community Grants initiative. Tesco works with community charity Groundwork to run its community funding scheme, which sees grants of up to £1,500, £1,000 and £500 awarded to local community projects.

As one of three groups in the community, which have been shortlisted to receive the cash award shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

SDFC are looking for funding to support those living with dementia in the local area by continuing to make the town, its amenities, social activities and services dementia accessible, so that people can stay as part of their communities for as long as possible to maintain their and their carers quality of life.

Through its volunteers, SDFC provides support and advice for families and carers, dementia

John Holden

awareness training for businesses, organisations and social groups, dementia friends sessions and building audits to make public buildings and businesses more dementia accessible.

We also link with organisations in the town such as Healthier Sheringham, the Salvation Army, Sheringham Community Support, the Lighthouse Church, Age Concern North Norfolk, the Alzheimer’s Society and many others to help people get the practical support and advice and access to services they need.

To help people in Sheringham and the local area more easily access the support which is available we want to produce a local directory of all the local support available and to make it available to everyone in Sheringham. There are many people supporting people to stay in their own homes and continue to be part of the community, not just because of dementia and we hope this directory will support this army of helpers to access the support which is available

in our amazing town and North Norfolk, but sometimes difficult as a stressed carer to access.

Throughout the pandemic we have been made aware that many people want to help their neighbours who may be struggling but don’t know where to turn to. This directory will help all of us to help family, friends and neighbours access what they need in times of struggle. SDFC also know it is important that this is in a hard copy format as many people do not have access to the internet and we want to ensure everyone has the possibility to access this important information which can make a difference to people’s lives.

Voting is now open in all Tesco stores in January, February and March and customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out each time they shop. Contact SDFC secretarysdfc@gmail.com or Liz Withington on 07905 292897
