Summer holidays are coming, and we are expecting more people than ever to visit our beaches and inland waterways. The RNLI, HM Coastguard and Broads Authority are all working to keep people safe near water.

Below you will find hints to help keep you and your family safe. Please cut this article out and keep it; it may just save you or your family’s lives.

Continued from front cover... • Tides cause a rise and fall in sea level. Check times of high and low tide so you don't get cut off. • Unexpected waves can quickly sweep people off their feet, even on a calm day. • Keep an eye on the water and don't go too close to the water’s edge

If you're in trouble in a rip current:

• If you can stand, walk, don’t swim. • If you have a board or inflatable, you should keep hold of it to help you float. • Raise your hand and shout for help. • Never try and swim against the rip or you'll get exhausted. • Swim parallel to the beach until you are free of it then make for shore

• Red and Yellow flags Lifeguard areas, safe areas to swim, bodyboard and use inflatables • Black and White cheqered flags are for surfboards, stand up paddleboards, kayaks and other non-powered craft. Launch and recovery area for kitesurfers and wind-surfers. Never swim or bodyboard here. • Red flags Danger! Never go in the water under any circumstances when the Red Flag is flying • Orange Windsock Indicates offshore or strong winds. Never use inflatables when the windsock is flying.

• Carry a means of calling for help and keep it protected and attached to you at all times. • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. • Check the weather and tide times. • Read signs and be aware of local hazards.

IN AN EMERGENCY call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

Inflatables

• Blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, not the sea where they can easily be blown offshore. If you must use them at the beach, then: • ensure children are closely supervised • keep nearby • only use between the red and yellow flags • follow the lifeguards' advice • do not take out in big waves • do not use when the orange windsock is flying, as this indicates offshore wind

• Always check the tide times and heights and keep a look out for incoming tide. Use tide timetables or a tidal prediction app like AnyTide. Make sure you have enough time to return safely. If in doubt, seek local advice. • Always carry a means of calling for help on your person. Call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard if you are in danger or you see someone in danger of being cut off by the tide. • Tell someone else where you’re going and when you’ll be back. They can

raise the alarm with the coastguard by calling 999 or 112 if you are overdue

furry and fluffy friends

A Note from the editor

At last, the sun has arrived, and thoughts are turning to lazy summer days and holidays.

Age Concern North Norfolk has had a busy month with our clients having several opportunities to embrace our furry and fluffy friends. There is no doubt that visits of small animals and birds provide huge stimulation and wonderment to our clients in the day centre, even if at first, they may say they do not want to touch them, they soon overcome their fears and join in with everyone else. First of all, we followed up on our visit of the guinea pigs to the centre by going to see them at the Cavies and Cake Café in Fakenham. Five clients were treated to refreshments and cakes before the guinea pigs were placed on the table in front of them to feed and cuddle. The Cavies and Cake scheme is an award-winning specialist in therapeutic guinea-pig visits, focusing on cognitive, sensory, fine motor skills and emotional engagement.

With many families caught in the cost-of-living crisis, outings for the children can be an unaffordable luxury, but there is fun to be had for very little cost or even for free. Look out for school holiday activities such as the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun scheme which can be booked for free activities on the Norfolk County Council website. Keep an eye out for other free workshops and activities available in your area.

Local carnivals are always popular with families, pack up a picnic and take advantage of all the free fun available. Local carnival dates are:

Wells Carnival: Friday 29th July – Sunday 7th August inclusive: (Carnival Day & Parade - Saturday 6th Aug).

Sheringham Carnival: Monday 1st August – Sunday 7th August (Carnival Day & Parade – Wednesday 3rd August).

Cromer Carnival: Saturday 13th August to Friday 19th August (Carnival Day & Parade - Wednesday 17th August).

The same week we had a ‘parliament of owls’ in the centre from Norfolk Wild Encounters – barn, snowy, boreal to name a few types and we watched them in flight across the hall to eat some prepared food as well as holding them on outstretched glove-covered arms. It was exciting to see them and to learn about their history.

Whether you are having a ‘staycation’ of off on your travels, have a great summer.

In the loop with Sheringham Town Council New Eco Street Lighting

We are very pleased to announce that the streetlights owned by the Town Council will start to be replaced in the next few weeks.

The lights that currently have issues will be prioritised for replacement. The project will be paid for out of the money received from the sale of the Town Hall.

We hope you agree that this is a much-needed project and will be of benefit to all. The replacement of the lights also means a considerable saving on future maintenance costs.

Sheringham Community Centre, located in Holway Road, offers a state-of-the-art venue for hire. A modern centre with parking for 40 cars. A variety of different size and shaped rooms are available to suit different needs. Full kitchens including oven and dishwasher located on each level – with exclusive access of kitchen available to main hall hirers on the ground floor. Fully accessible.

The temporary Post Office is due to be installed at the Community Centre on 1st July. A location within the town is being sourced but to date, no suitable premises have yet been found. We hope you agree that having the Post Office at the Community Centre for the time being is better than not having the facility at all. Opening hours will initially be 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Thursday. The Town Council has now released the covenant on the land at Weybourne Road in order for the affordable housing and care home development to go ahead.

Many thanks to all residents who attended the Annual Parish Meeting. The draft minutes are now available on the website. We would encourage all residents to read the minutes as there is so much useful information. English artist Louis Wain rises to prominence at the end of the 19th century for his surreal cat paintings that seemed to reflect his declining sanity. Review: Beautifully and artistically done. Nick Hart is an award-winning folk singer and multi-instrumentalist whose work with English folk song is rapidly gaining him a reputation as one of the most acclaimed performers of his generation.

His first two solo albums were released to critical acclaim and this event sees him performing songs from his third album ‘Nick Hart Sings Ten English Folk Songs’, recorded during the first lockdown of 2020.

North Norfolk Photographic Society Exhibition

Deprived of a sound engineer and locked away in a house full of strange instruments, he was afforded the time and space to explore different approaches to the accompaniment of traditional song. Nick's distinctive guitar playing is augmented here by harmonium, lyre, viols and a host of percussion and woodwinds.

Ewan Carr said: “Nick’s repertoire of songs is drawn largely from his native East Anglia and I can think of nowhere more atmospheric to hear his new creations performed than with a backdrop of our beautiful, wild coastline.

The Society will be holding its Annual Exhibition in conjunction with the Holt Festival. The Exhibition is being held at St Andrews Church Hall, Church Street in Holt and will be open from 9.30 to 3.30 daily from Monday 25th to Friday 29th July. Entry is free.

In addition to the selection of prints, there will be a digital display of members’ images and several stalls to purchase prints and greeting cards.

North Norfolk Railway Tracks Back to the Sixties The North Norfolk Railway is to host a Sixties Weekend on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July recalling the atmosphere of the transformative decade with steam and diesel trains working side-by-side plus live music from the era and displays of some of the distinctive road vehicles of the time.

Digital laster Powers of Attorney - Will they be safe? The Ministry of Justice is looking to modernise the process of creating Lasting Powers of Attorney and introduce making LPAs completely online. Powers of Attorney have come a long way from the pre-printed double-sided booklet that was predecessor to the LPA - the “Enduring Power of Attorney” or EPA - that could be made from 1986 to 2007.

By 2007, as EPAs could be made by individuals at home and taking professional advice was not obligatory, there were concerns over the number of EPAs made without the full understanding of the Donor. It was felt that there were not enough safeguarding measures in the EPA making process – and this led to the creation of Lasting Powers of Attorney or LPAs.

Although EPAs did not have to be registered until the Donor was beginning to lack mental capacity to manage their financial affairs, they had one important protection; anyone dealing with the Attorney could ask the Donor of an unregistered EPA to confirm that the Attorney was acting within their authority. Once the Donor lacked mental capacity, the Court of Protection was involved and could protect a vulnerable Donor by asking the Attorney for accounts and investigate any claims of financial abuse.

Unlike the old EPAs, LPAs must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian prior to use and registration is proof of the authority of the Attorney to act. So, unlike in the days of EPAs, the Donor is therefore unlikely to be asked by anyone dealing with the Attorney, if the Attorney is acting as the Donor expects. This means that a vulnerable Donor needs to be confident that they understand what is involved in making an LPA and adequate safeguards are in place to avoid abuse.

For the time being, Lasting Powers of Attorney need to be printed off and signed by the Donor and Attorneys, all of whom need witnesses to their signatures. Digital signatures are not accepted. In addition, a Certificate Provider must confirm on the form that the Donor understands the LPA and that no fraud or pressure is being put on them to make it.

Making an LPA online would mean that there need no longer be a physical witness to the Donor’s signature – and The Law Society and STEP are concerned about the impact that this would have in terms of safeguarding the Donor against fraud, coercion or pressure.

LPAs are legal documents that give the Attorneys wide powers over decisions that affect the Donor’s life when their mental capacity is diminished – and can allow the Attorneys to deal with everything from finances, to where the Donor lives or even the life sustaining medical treatment they receive. An independent witness watching the Donor sign is able to assess whether the Donor does understand and want to make the LPA – and could give evidence on this to the Office of the Public Guardian if there were concerns over how the LPA was made.

The Certificate Provider must currently have met with the Donor and spoken to them about the LPA to be able to confirm that the Donor understands what he or she is signing. Digital creation of LPAs will need to include this safeguard for Donors, but it is not yet clear how the Ministry of Justice intend that this protection be maintained through an online application.

For the time being, we remain bound by signatures on a printed LPA and it is likely that paper applications to register LPAs always be an option for those who do not have access to the internet, or those uncomfortable with making an LPA digitally.

Both STEP and The Law Society welcome making LPAs easier and quicker to create, but are looking to see that there is a comprehensive set of safeguards linked to the online creation of LPAs. Because of the lack of human element in the signing process, how to prove that the Donor has mental capacity and understands the nature of the document they are signing will need careful consideration. The government will produce further details on these points before making LPAs online becomes possible and potentially safe.

Sheringham Stroke Support Group

Based in Sheringham we cover most of North Norfolk from Wells to Waxham and the hinterland from Fakenham to Stalham.

We are an affiliated member of the Stroke Association which is the only UK wide charity concerned with helping everyone affected by stroke. Their website is stroke.org.uk and is worth a good look. They supply free help books on almost every subject concerned with stroke and they work closely with local groups.

We are an independent local self-financing group who are here for all Stroke survivors and their carers. We enjoy a social afternoon twice a month in the smaller hall at St. Andrews Methodist Church, Cromer Road Sheringham NR 26 8SA, near Tesco. Meeting at 2.15p for 2.30pm start we aim to finish between 3.45 and 4pm.

Our last four meetings have included a talk by a female lifeboat shore crew member; a speaker from Headway – the brain injury association – who gave us insight into how the brain works to repair itself following injury. We heard about a 1960’s childhood from a local author who brought along various objects and items to demonstrate how we used to live. This brought many smiles and happy memories. On May 11th we had an interesting talk from a badminton official and adjudicator at the 2012 and 2020 (2021) Olympic Games and many other high profile international competitions. She spoke about her role as an official and line judge, her selection to travel the world representing Britain for 8 years and showed us several of the everyday and special occasion uniforms she was expected to wear. Some were more comfortable than others in hot weather! The 2012 London Olympics blazer was particularly notable by its clever inclusion of London landmarks in the design. Also, her various lanyard official passes, to be worn at all times, were adorned with small gifts and lovely small souvenirs. After the speaker we chat over a ‘cuppa’ and enjoy a fun raffle. Each member brings a small item to put in the raffle, so each person goes home with a prize. Canine Keyboard Capers

The latest Briston Organ Show on Friday July 1st. was amazing for many reasons - the sheer skill of top UK organist Chris Powell, putting his Roland digital organ through its paces with such delights as 'The Great Escape March', 'Riders in the Sky', the overture from 'Orpheus In The Underworld', an Abba selection, 'The Rose', and a Count Basie styling of 'Have You Met Miss Jones?' These were all played in true orchestral sounds - you would never realise you were listening to an organ - but those who still like organs to sound like organs (!) got a wonderful selection of Theatre Organ favourites, some at breakneck speed and amazing manual dexterity - and then we finished with favourites from 'Last Night of The Proms' which sounded exactly like a full symphony orchestra.

What added to the interest though is that Chris and his wife Joanne also had their little dog 'Jess' with them - quite a comedian too towards the end of the show, she wandered on to the stage and laid down by the organ,

Teams from Rotary clubs across North Norfolk and the Holt Youth Project took to the trees at Holkham in a sponsored High Ropes Challenge to raise funds for respite breaks for Young Carers. Team ages ranged from 8 to 82 all motivated by the desire to help these deserving youngsters enjoy a few days respite at the National Trust Activity Centre, Brancaster.

Poppy Café’s Jubilee Tea Party

What a happy occasion our Tea Party on 7th June turned out to be. Everyone arrived in their ‘party best’ and immediately entered into the spirit of the event, spurred on when entering the room festooned with bunting, flowers and helium balloons.

A large table was filled with an array of tempting, goodies: sausage rolls, delicate smoked salmon and cucumber sandwiches, Devonshire scones, shortbread crowns and of course cake in many forms. Another table displayed Jubilee napkins and a variety of pretty porcelain tea services to be used for our guests’ refreshments.

All were in a festive mood and Deborah was very regal in red with a jaunty union jack hat! Most enjoyed the general conversation but some more determined souls tackled the royal word searches and quizzes: first and foremost, ‘What does the Queen carry in her handbag?’ Other activities included colouring in pictures of the Queen, her crown and Buckingham Palace and doing jigsaws.

The celebrations ended with some rousing singing of Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and God save the Queen, ably led by Valerie, after which there was an opportunity for photographs to be taken with the Queen by Lee. Everyone left in a very happy mood, having enjoyed the morning, with a number taking home a treat for later.

A class of children in Sheringham Woodfields School are celebrating after raising over one thousand pounds for the British Red Cross Ukraine Appeal. After three months of fundraising, the students from Ash Class were excited to receive a huge cheque showing off the amount they have raised. During an English lesson about current affairs, Shane, Eddie, Sam and Bertie were learning about the on-going crisis in Ukraine and decided that they would like to do something to help. The boys watched news footage of Ukrainian families fleeing their homes and seeking refuge in neighbouring countries

"I felt bad that they don't have anything and they're losing all their things and their homes," said Shane, aged 18. "I wanted to help them. I wanted to do something kind".

Big Norfolk Holiday fun opens for Summer Bookings

Children across Norfolk can benefit from a range of fun activities this summer, as the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun scheme returns for the six-week school holiday.

Bookings are now open for the scheme, which provides free activities with a healthy lunch for children eligible for means tested free school meals.

The scheme is delivered by Norfolk County Council in partnership with Active Norfolk and supports children aged 5 to 16 as part of the government’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme.

Cllr John Fisher, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council: “We want our summer Big Norfolk Holiday Fun scheme to be the best yet and we’ve got an even wider range of activities on offer, including mechanics, performing arts, outdoor challenges and activities around mental health and wellbeing.”

“The programme provides children with a host of fun activities and helps parents to reduce their childcare costs. With so much choice available, children should be able to find something that they have a genuine interest in, and the scheme has the potential to inspire future careers, hobbies, and skills.”

“We’ve had great feedback from children and young people who have taken part in the past, so I’d encourage families to get booking on what promises to be a fantastic summer programme. We know it is a welcome support for many families during the school holidays.” Activities will be running from 25 July to 2 September where children will have the opportunity to learn a new skill, play a range of sports or take part in a host of activities such as outdoor adventures, science workshops, cooking, art, and lots more.

Those who have taken part in previous Big Norfolk Holiday Fun programmes have reported ddoing more physical activity and

many have said they’ve been inspired to try healthier foods.

The summer programme is now open for bookings for children aged 5-16 (or 4 if they turn 5 in August).

Those who are eligible for means-tested free school meals can claim free spaces, whilst paid spots for a small charge are available on many activities for those who don’t qualify for a free place, more can be found on this at www.norfolk.gov.uk/bignorfolkholidayfun

This year there will be no special codes needed to book activities making it much easier for families to take part. Families are encouraged to explore the wide range of activities available and book as soon as possible.

first look at Plans for New £1.65m Recycling Centre at Sheringham

Plans have been unveiled for a large new recycling centre at Sheringham, intended to replace the current site and serve as a new recycling centre for the area. Norfolk County Council is now asking for people’s thoughts on the proposed site location and design.

Councillor Eric Vardy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste, and County Councillor for the Holt division (where the current recycling centre is located), said: “We want to deliver a new recycling centre with plenty of parking, a one-way system to cut queues, and that has space for a reuse shop. The new and much larger site is designed to make it easier for people to use, help increase recycling rates, and ensure the area has a recycling centre that’s fit for the future. I urge residents to look at the plans and have their say.”

County councillors allocated £1.65m funding in February 2019 for this part of Norfolk’s ongoing recycling centre improvement

programme.

The new recycling centre would have: • a reuse shop • plenty of parking spaces • a one-way system for smooth traffic flow and reduced queues • separate public and service areas (which means it would not need to close for waste collection lorries, as is the case at the current site) • a ‘pay as you throw’ section for DIY waste and a trade service for small businesses

Thrigby Hall has recently celebrated an exciting new arrival – a very important Snow Leopard Cub!

Snow Leopards live throughout the mountains of Central Asia where their existence in the wild is threatened by illegal hunting for the fur and bone trade and declining numbers of wild prey due to hunting and competition with livestock for grazing. Sadly, they are also the victim of hunters when they threaten local livestock. The wild Snow Leopard population is in decline with less than 3,500 adult wild individuals left (1).

This important cub will remain with the parents for at least 18 months after which it will be mature enough to be transferred to another zoo within the European breeding programme, helping to preserve the future of this beautiful species.

Similarly to domestic cats these cubs require veterinary care to help keep them healthy and we are looking forward to being able to help Thrigby Hall care for this special new arrival. local NHS urges Remaining People Eligible for a CovID-19 Spring Booster to Come forward

The NHS in Norfolk and Waveney is urging those eligible for a COVID19 spring booster but yet to come forward to take up the offer as soon as possible.

The NHS nationally has invited more than five million people in total to get their spring booster in line with JCVI guidance as part of the world-leading NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme. In Norfolk and Waveney, we’re urging those that haven’t come forward to do so as soon as possible, to protect themselves and others around them.

Tricia D’Orsi, Director of Nursing-designate for NHS Norfolk and Waveney said: “We know that vaccination is the best form of protection against COVID-19 and it’s vital that people understand there is still time to have their spring booster vaccination if they are eligible. Our vaccination teams continue to do an amazing job of making sure that all those who are eligible get their vaccine across Norfolk and Waveney.”

Kate Keeling, Head of Immunisation & Health Inequalities, NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “We are really pleased that so many people in Norfolk and Waveney

have come forward and had their COVID-19 vaccinations. For those who have yet to have their COVID-19 vaccination or indeed spring booster, it’s really easy to attend one of the many sites administering vaccinations. We cannot recommend enough, the importance of everyone eligible, regardless of their age, having the COVID-19 vaccination to protect themselves, their family, and the wider local community.”

Encouraging everyone eligible to get their Spring Booster vaccine now will also mean that individuals who are likely to be eligible for an autumn dose will have had their Spring Booster with the right gap between doses to help extend protection over winter, and against any possible rise in infection levels.

The autumn programme will be determined once the JCVI finalise the guidance for the next phase of the COVID-19 vaccination programme. People aged 75 and over, older adult care home residents and those who are immunosuppressed have been able to get their spring booster since 21 March.

Spring booster jab appointments can be booked quickly and conveniently on the NHS website and people that can’t go online can book by phoning 119.

Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care System Launch of NHS Norfolk and Waveney and the Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care System – 1 July 2022

NHS Norfolk and Waveney has replaced the area’s clinical commissioning group, as part of changes to the health and care landscape which see each part of the country have what is known as an Integrated Care System (ICS).

Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) are partnerships of organisations that come together to plan and deliver joined up health and care services to improve the lives of people in their area.

As a result of the new Health and Care Act, Norfolk and Waveney ICS will have legal status and will include a statutory Integrated Care Partnership (ICP), and a new NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB) called NHS Norfolk and Waveney.

NHS Norfolk and Waveney replaces NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). As well as taking on the existing responsibilities of the CCG, the new organisation will be accountable for the performance and finances of the NHS across Norfolk and Waveney - a total budget of £2 billion a year. Norfolk and Waveney ICP will also be established as a formal alliance of partners with a role in improving the health and wellbeing of our residents. Norfolk and Waveney ICP will bring together the NHS, local government, the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector and other partners to focus on prevention, wider social and economic factors affecting people’s health and reducing health inequalities.

In Norfolk and Waveney, we have already achieved a lot by working in partnership; this has been strengthened through our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes have been made possible by different organisations – NHS hospitals, GPs, mental health and community health services, local councils, care homes and social workers, voluntary and community organisations and others – joining forces to agree and plan for local people’s needs.

As a whole system, working together, we’ve set ourselves three goals. Collectively, we want to make sure that people can live as healthy a life as possible, make sure that people only have to tell their story once and to make Norfolk and Waveney the best place to work in health and care.

Like all Integrated Care systems in england, we will work to:

● Improve outcomes in population health and healthcare ● Tackle inequalities in outcomes, experience and access

● enhance productivity and value for money ● support broader social and economic development.

Rt Hon, Patricia Hewitt, Chair of the Norfolk and Waveney ICS and Chair of NHS Norfolk and Waveney said: “There is nothing more important than our own and our family’s health. It’s why, as a country, we treasure the NHS, social care services and its dedicated staff. But vital though it is, the NHS only accounts for a fraction of our physical and mental health and wellbeing. All the rest depends on other things: our environment - whether we have decent work, enough money, close family and friends, a warm home, clean air - and our own lifestyles.

“The development of our Integrated Care System is a unique opportunity to bring together the many different partners who support the health and wellbeing of Norfolk and Waveney’s almost 1.1 million residents: the staff and organisations working in the NHS and social care; local government with its responsibilities for public health, social care, housing, leisure and the environment; the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector; and many others in the public and private sectors.

“Although we started working together well before the pandemic, the COVID-19 vaccination programme showed how our GPs, nurses and other staff in primary and community care could work together with their local council, community and faith groups, mobilising volunteers and drawing on the support of the wider system to create one of the most successful vaccination schemes in the country. That local approach will be the foundation of our Integrated Care System, supported by health and wellbeing partnerships that bring together local government with the voluntary sector, the NHS and other key partners.

“Just as local people know best what their community needs if they are to flourish, each of us is the expert in our own lives. And all of us have a responsibility for our own health and wellbeing. So, our Integrated Care System will have at its heart a constant process of listening to people, learning from their experience and acting on what we hear.

“We now have a unique opportunity to build on what we’ve achieved, to tackle the backlog of waiting lists left by the pandemic and to transform and integrate care around the needs of people, families and communities. By working together, we can help people lead longer, healthier, happier lives.”

Tracey Bleakley, Chief Executive Officer of NHS Norfolk and Waveney, said: “In Norfolk and Waveney our NHS organisations, councils, public services and voluntary and community partners are working much more closely together. We are joining up to tackle all the things that affect our health and wellbeing, listen to the priorities of our communities, local people and patients and tackle some of the biggest challenges we are all facing.

This is the culmination of many years of effort to build partnership working across the NHS, local authorities, the third sector and patient groups.”

Cllr Bill Borrett, Chair of the Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Partnership (ICP), said: “Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic we saw just how vital it is that all the organisations in the health and care sector work together to meet the needs of the people of Norfolk and Waveney. Each part of the system is staffed by incredibly hard working, dedicated people, but if we don’t make sure their work is coordinated across the board, we won’t get the best results for our communities.

“The new ICS is the first step towards a wider ranging, holistic approach to health and social care, that our residents expect and deserve. I look forward to creating a system where the whole process, from the first GP appointment to the long-term care package, gives people consistent, informed support that doesn’t require them to spend hours answering the same questions over and over to different organisations. There’s a lot of work for the ICS to do, but that work has already started and will ensure that people across Norfolk and Waveney will receive health and care services that meet their needs across the board.”

Time and time again, people feel that different people, services and departments do not talk to each other, care is fragmented, and patients and their families have to repeat their experiences over and over again.

Hosting ukrainians Group Support – HuGS

Friday 17th June saw nearly 60 people who are members of Hugs, come together at the Lighthouse to welcome our Ukrainian guests in Sheringham and the local area. There are 35 Ukrainian people who are now living in Sheringham with their hosts connected and supported by HUGS. Some of our Ukrainian guests were not there as they have already found work and were working.

This was the first time many people who were both hosts and Ukrainian had come together. Liz Withington said “The reason HUGS was set up was to ensure both hosts and our Ukrainian friends were able to connect with each other and support each other through what are the most horrendous of times for Ukraine. Hugs has been working with Aid Ukraine/UK Aids Ukraine to support the matching process and build a safe community in Sheringham. Our first event was a great success in bringing people together, welcoming them to Sheringham and showing those who are here that there is help and support available and that other people do care. “

Paula Prince who also was involved in the initiation of HUGS said “it was most rewarding to see the children who have arrived playing feeling safe and secure and chatting with children in their own language.”

Phil and Allison Bailey who are also hosts as well as involved in the initiation of HUGS commented that HUGS had brought host

families together which has been so important in sharing the load of finding a way through what can be an administrative maze. Phil commented particularly that it has been helpful working with HUGS as a group to support Sheringham’s newest residents to find work and being able to link with local businesses. HUGS has also had an important role in

gathering donations of what both the hosts and Ukrainian families need. Many have left their homes with very few possessions. HUGS has been able to find beds, linen and baby equipment for hosts and donations have been gathered of clothing, school uniform, toys and books as well as money to buy important items such as school shoes. Colin Heinink has been involved in HUGS from the offset and said that “The community has been incredible in producing what the Ukrainian families have

so desperately needed. Host families have been incredible offering up not just their homes but also their support and the community have shown the Ukrainian families that we do really care.”

Local organisations have also been supporting HUGS and in particular HUGS would like to thank the Sheringham Community Support, The Salvation Army, The Lighthouse Community Church, the Primary School and Nursery, Sanders Coaches, The Reef and NNDC for helping to support the Ukrainian families here and being involved with HUGS.

If you are a host family or Ukrainian refugee living locally, please get in touch with HUGS to be part of this community: hostingukrainiansg@gmail.com. We have contact lists running, advice sheets and a Whats app group. There is also a Ukrainian Support worker at NNDC Oksana Croom who is there to help. NNDC are running drop-in meetings every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon 2-4 pm at the Holt Road offices to support both hosts and their guests.

Hugs moving forward is looking to support those who have arrived from Ukraine to set up social talking groups to help them improve their language skills and also hold regular social events to further strengthen community ties. We will also continue to source and provide what the community needs.

Helping your children onto the property ladder

If you have savings, you may prefer to help your child now rather than pass on those assets through inheritance, but it is important to make sure you still have enough left for your own needs. These could change over time, for example when you retire or if you need long term care.

Have you thought about: • if you or your partner die or become seriously ill and need care; • if you were to divorce; • if your child divorces or remarries; • if your child becomes unable to work or earn as much; or • implications on any siblings or other dependants.

Having a written record will help with the administration of your estate and reduce the risk of misunderstanding or a dispute between family members.

Making a gift or a loan Deciding at the outset whether your contribution is a gift or a loan is key. For a gift of a lump sum: most mortgage lenders will require a ‘gifted deposit letter’ which confirms the relationship between you and the recipient and that you have no beneficial interest in the property. For a loan: you should set out the terms for repayment and any interest payable.

registering a charge at the land registry The preparation of a legal charge and its registration at the Land Registry could be the most secure way to protect your interest, ultimately allowing you to force the sale of the property should the borrower fail to repay the loan. Personal guarantees Instead of contributing a lump sum, you could help your child by becoming a parental guarantor or a joint borrower. In either case, you would potentially be liable for all the outstanding debt which could put your own home at risk. springboard mortgages A springboard mortgage allows someone with

a small deposit, typically five per cent, to borrow if their parents place an equivalent proportion of the property’s value in cash in a deposit account as security. The mortgage lender can access those savings to make up any missed payments.

Tax and other implications If you have a beneficial interest in the property or intend to share in any uplift in its value, you should carefully consider your potential liability for capital gains tax. A lump sum contribution should not create any immediate liability for inheritance tax. However, if you die within seven years, HMRC could class it as part of your estate. Your contribution could also affect your eligibility for funding for long term care from your local authority, who could argue you have intentionally deprived yourself of your assets.

The Society’s flagship flagship locomotive

The Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society is a local charity with over 2,000 members – all love railways, especially the heritage kind. The Society is named after a company that operated a railway across Norfolk in the early 20th century which, over the years, never quite lost its M&GN identity. The charity was founded in 1959 and has been successful in developing its strategies and responding well to challenges – so much so it now has assets of over £3 million. Our head office is in Sheringham and many of our activities are undertaken in close co-operation with the North Norfolk Railway where most of our Collection can be found. The Society owns full size steam and diesel locomotives, vintage coaches and wagons but it takes many hands to help achieve our principle aim of restoring, operating and maintaining the vehicles and artefacts. We are in need of more volunteers to help us in our endeavours.

Summer 2022

Joint Line is a quarterly magazine given free to members. The editor is retiring next year so we require someone to be, in the first instance, assistant editor and to take the reigns next summer. The work involves editing and commissioning articles (though much of the content is provided by volunteer colleagues), page layout and photo preparation, both in readiness for the commercial printer. The work could be undertaken by a small group with individual responsibilities. Either way, we would be delighted to hear from you – appropriate software is provided.

Find out exactly where these Mammoths are located on Break's county trail map The Council is a supporting partner for the countywide trail and has sponsored two Steppe Mammoths – Margaret’s Mammoth located in West Runton and Lumi located in Cart Gap.

The GoGoDiscover Trail runs from today until Saturday, September 10 with T-Rex around Norwich, (including several designed by North Norfolk Schools and community groups) and Steppe Mammoths located around Norfolk.

Break is an East Anglian charity that works to better the lives of children and young people who are on the edge of care, in care and leaving care. The Trail is helping to raise funds for the charity through trail app downloads, trail maps, raffle tickets, merchandise and ultimately auctioning off the sculptures at the end of September. To take part in the GoGoDiscover Trail you can download the app onto your phone, pick up a trail map or download a trail map from Break’s website.

Margaret's Mammoth in West Runton

Margaret’s Mammoth was created by Phil Daniels, who also created the Steppe Mammoth located in Pensthorpe Natural Park. This Mammoth was named after Margaret Hems, who discovered the first bone, of what would turn out to be Laura Blackwell, Project Enabler, the most complete North Norfolk District Council, Lumi in Cart Gap Steppe Mammoth said: “It has been great working skeleton found in with the team at Break, first on the Mammoth Britain, in West Runton in 1990. The Sheringham and District Philatelic Society

The Sheringham and District Philatelic Society met on Monday 13th June to hear about the early stamps of what is now called Papua New Guinea. Peter Boyce, from Norwich Philatelic Society, showed 2 German New Guinea stamps, overprinted by the Australians, with the letters GRI, referring to King George V, when the islands were taken over by Australia in 1914.

The islands then became the NW Pacific Islands, using overprinted Australian kangaroo stamps. From 1921 onwards, stamps featuring aspects of the islands e.g., birds of paradise, were printed. The islands were then taken over by the British and became known as Papua, and eventually Papua New Guinea and gained Independence in 1975. The second half of his presentation took us on an Archaeological Tour of Athens! Peter had lived in Athens for a number of years and had photos, Post Office produced postcards and stamps illustrating all the famous historic sites of Athens.

My first Car – freedom and frustration

How many remember their first car? Most, I guess. Mine was a sit-up-and-beg Ford Popular. It cost £160 and quickly became a mixture of exhilaration and frustration. Being free from the uncertainties of bus timetables was great. But the car wasn’t exactly state of the art.

OK it hadn’t got a heater. But it hadn’t got brakes either - well, not in the modern, meaningful sense of the word. You had to plan ahead if you wanted to make sure of seeing tomorrow.

Then there was the gear lever, which was more like a walking stick, and which seemed only

The windscreen wiper was a thing of mystery. If you went up hill it would slow down. If the hill was steep or long the wiper would decide to halt altogether. An engineer friend told me it worked off the carburettor. Such were the wonders of modern science in those days!

The car had those semaphore indicators which flopped out when you wanted to turn. But it had its own agenda and would usually decide not to operate until I had gone round the corner. In fairness the car did give me a freedom I had never had before. It also caused me more than one very embarrassing moment.

Fancy dress parties were all the rage then and I was going to one dressed as a gorilla. The host told me where to find his place. So, I turned right at the traffic lights and followed the unlit road. Very soon it became clear this was not where I should be. So, after stirring the

gearbox I eventually found reverse and went to turn round.

The car came to a very gentle rest, refused to move and the engine died. I got out wondering if I had reversed into a black hole. Turned out it was a large pile of sand which had blocked the exhaust pipe.

I managed to push the vehicle off the sand and set about finding something to unblock the exhaust. In those days cars had a thing called a starting handle. Having groped around inside I eventually found it - under the driver’s seat.

It fitted the exhaust pipe perfectly (must have been a designed for such occasions?). With the starting handle well and truly engaged I was starting to clear it when I felt a presence. Looking round I saw a pair of big black boots attached to some formal-looking trousers. “Evening sir,” said the policeman. “If I may be as bold as to say I think you have the starting handle in the wrong end of the car.” He then turned to go and as he did so I heard him say “even a gorilla would know that, ha ha….”

Cromer Pier Show 2022 What a fantastic Show!

Weather forecast

The previous three months have been notable especially for their lack of meaningful rain and recent Mediterranean days.

July is likely to settle down from the second week as pressure starts to rise. We still may suffer on the coast as far as temperatures go because of below average sea temperatures. August will continue with the settled pattern in the first part of the month with spikes of very warm or hot days but will become more unsettled with temperature overall only coming out at average for the month. September should be an improvement on the latter days of August with a good deal of fine weather but again temperatures will be average. Who doesn’t love a brownie, rich, sweet, and so versatile? The perfect pick-me-up with a cuppa. Once you have the basic recipe perfected the variations are endless.

Try adding some nuts for crunch, maybe fruit (raspberries are good), or a swirl of salted caramel or Biscoff spread. Add mincemeat for Christmas brownies or mini eggs at Easter, or decorate for a special occasion, there are so many ways to put your own stamp on these delicious treats.

This recipe is an easy starter version, the trick is to get that dense, fudgy middle by not over baking, cook for too long and you have chocolate cake, so remove from the oven whilst the middle is still slightly underdone. Ingredients

175g dark chocolate 175g butter 250g caster sugar 3 large eggs, beaten 100g plain flour 25g cocoa powder 100g chocolate chunks/chips (milk, plain or white)

Method Preheat your oven to 180C/Gas 4. Grease a deep baking pan, 22cm x 32cm, and line with baking parchment. Put the butter and chocolate in a mixing bowl and sit on top of a pan of simmering water (make sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water) and stir the mixture until fully melted, then leave to cool slightly. Put the eggs and sugar in a separate mixing bowl and whisk until pale and at the ‘ribbon’ stage. Sift the flour and cocoa into the egg mixture, then add the melted chocolate and fold together until fully incorporated and smooth. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, sprinkle over the chocolate chunks/chips and bake for about 30 minutes (test the middle with a cocktail stick, it should come out looking slightly wet). Leave to cool completely in the tin then lift out on the paper and cut into squares. Enjoy! Jo – editor

Finding recipes that work for you by not only being popular with everyone but saving you time and money is my constant quest, and this recipe definitely ticks all those boxes. It’s quick, nutritious, fun, and can feed everyone from a vegan to a meat eater happily, plus it's easy on the wallet. You may have only ever eaten baked beans before, but I promise you that this is an absolutely delicious supper, so be brave and start putting those tins of mixed beans into your shopping cart!

Better still, buy them dried, soak overnight, change the water the next day and boil them up; you can then pop them in the freezer in portion sizes, ready to pull out and add to any number of dishes.

Beans and pulses are so good for you, store well and are relatively cheap and can be added to soups, stews and can replace meat in lots of dishes, as in this one. As food becomes pricier and the bills are getting bigger, we all need to

think about how we can make our budgets go further and replacing some or all of the meat in a recipe with beans and pulses is an easy win.

Wraps are cheap and easy to buy, and kids love assembling their wraps to eat, often willingly adding veg and salad in that they normally wouldn’t touch. The blend of cooked and crunchy raw veg, hummus and condiments is a winner, and we regularly now have this at home. Mix up the veg according to what is in season or on special.

Mixed Bean Burritos

1 red onion, finely chopped 3 sticks celery, finely chopped 2 large flat mushrooms, diced into small chunks 1 red and 1 green pepper, chopped into small chunks 2 fat garlic cloves, chopped finely 1 fat courgette, cut into small chunks 2 tins mixed beans, drained and rinsed A few sun-dried tomatoes from a jar, plus some of the oil 2 tsp smoked paprika ½ to 1 tsp mild chilli powder Seasoning to taste Splash soy sauce Soft wraps and chopped salad such as lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes to serve Mayo and grated cheese to serve (use vegan versions if needed)

Heat a little of the oil from the jar of sun-dried tomatoes in a deep non-stick frying pan or wok and add all the veg except the beans. Gently fry

until the veg are softening, about 10mins, being careful not to burn them. Add the paprika, chilli powder and soy sauce and stir well, then check the seasoning and gently fry for another 5 minutes before adding in the beans and stirring. Two Sheringham Artists Back by Popular Demand!

about Mel by David - In 2016 I visited a craft show in Sheringham and spotted Mel selling cards and prints of her work, nothing unusual you might think, but every single piece made me smile. Since that meeting, we have become firm friends and are excited to be together again for a fourth exhibition. Mel’s black and white portraits of iconic people in the music and movie world and whimsical images of cats, crabs, lobsters, and other characters all evoke childhood memories and have become increasingly desirable to all age groups. This year, she will be showing new pieces within her “At the Beach” collection created in both watercolour and acrylic, and I guarantee you won’t leave the exhibition without a smile on your face.

about David by Mel - David has lived life as an artist for over fifty years painting in water colour and oils. He is also a master of stitchwork, and his subjects vary from small studies of birds, mammals, and insects to large images of fantasy and the bizarre. Two new works included in the exhibition this year, are “When festivals collide” which portrays the meeting of Christmas and Halloween in a way only David could portray it and “Village life”, which is an intricate oil painting portrait of a village. His fastidious treatment to detail shown throughout his collections of paintings and embroidery will simply take your breath away.

This is a reminder about our exciting Maritime Heritage Festival, which is taking place at Tugboat Yard, East Quay, Wells-next-the-Sea on Saturday and Sunday July 23 & 24. Plans are well under way!

We are expecting at least eighteen historic local wooden crab boats and whelkers to gather on Tugboat pontoon, arriving on Friday July 22 and being on display on both Saturday and Sunday July 23 and 24.

There will be a spectacular Flotilla on Saturday 23 July starting at 2pm when all the boats will motor in convoy to the harbour mouth and back so they can be viewed by visitors.

The Flotilla will be led by our two flagships, Dunkirk Little Ship and former relief lifeboat at Wells, Lucy Lavers, and former Wells whelker, Harvester.

There will be plenty of information available about the boats and our Maritime Heritage, and we are delighted there will be members of the fishing and boatbuilding families who worked or built these boats joining us.

As well as the boats, there is much more to entertain you over the weekend! Rescue Wooden Boats will have a stall with lots of information and merchandise, there will be food stalls (Norfolk Thai, BBQ), a drink stall (Black Shuck Distillery), a model lifeboats display, activities and competitions. In addition, the Nelson Shantymen and Anto Morra (Irish folk singer) will be performing.

Fancy trying something different this August? New Stages is presenting a season of activity for all ages throughout the summer – and it’s all completely free to take part! Most workshops take place in North Walsham and other events such as special Storytime events are taking place at libraries in Cromer and Stalham.

Joseph Ballard, Director of New Stages said: “Getting creative in the community helps us connect with others and the world around us – especially in a post-lockdown world. I’m very proud that we can present such a range of free workshops here in North Walsham for all ages. We’ll then collect in feedback to plan a way forward for more regular activity. The town has always supported my similar ventures in the past and this is my way of building on this for the future.”

Creative Workshops will take place every Wednesday morning and will range from a taster session in British Sign Language, to modelling with clay, writing poems and tasting exotic foods. These workshops will focus on creative activity as a way to think

sharing something different together.

A free taster session with North Walsham People’s Choir will take place at 7pm on Tuesday 9th August, all are welcome to join in with the friendly group from pop, rock, musicals and world music.

If you want to be inspired to write, a ‘writing for fun’ workshop will take place on Thursday 11th August at 7pm with simple writing prompts and short exercises designed to unblock your creativity!

The summer is a series of free taster sessions to develop new community projects going forward and all are welcome to attend the ‘creativity and wellbeing’ discussion event on Monday 8 August at 6pm.

Well, it’s here again, the second successive year of my bid to raise thousands and thousands for local North Norfolk charities.

After smashing my target of £26,000 and raising more than £38,000 for 26 local charities last year, this year I am aiming to do it all over again - but with a twist. For every mile I complete, 25 local charities will each receive £1,000, and then for the final mile of the marathon I want to donate £5,000 to the Supporting Ukraine in Norfolk Community Foundation’s Ukraine fund that is helping refugees all over our home. Our target to raise this year is £30,000.

Our local charities do so much for our community. And as the first MP in the country to open my home to refugees, I know how much support is required especially when the war in Ukraine shows no sign of ending. It is essential we continue to play our part in Norfolk to help those finding safety here.

As Parliament breaks for the Summer, I will be

embarking on my Summer Tour again, getting all round our constituency to pick up your issues and try to ensure I can help fix them for you. But before that, I will be spending my first week of the Summer volunteering with the ambulance service. This year I pledged to not be an MP who just talked about issues that affect us, but actually rolled up my sleeves to understand the problems we all face better. After volunteering in a care home at Easter, this time I will be supporting our East of England Ambulance Service. We know all our health systems have been placed under enormous strain following the pandemic. I work with so many of them but many of us know the ambulance service has seen particular pressure. I hope my week will help inform me more as I return to Parliament to continue raising the issue and to ensure we can improve our response times for all.

Away from raising money and volunteering, my work in Parliament is bearing fruit. Continual lobbying for better mental health provision in North Norfolk has seen very productive talks at Cromer Hospital as I campaign to bring specific mental health walk in support to our fabulous local hospital. Equally, dentistry is another of my key campaigns. My Father is

the retired NHS dentist in Fakenham. He worked in the NHS for 34 years and as such I have a real insight and passion for improving dentistry. We are in early-stage discussions for a dental training school at the UEA and vital changes to the profession are on the cards thanks to my campaigning.

I look forward to seeing you in the Summer, on my tour of the villages and towns or just simply jogging as I get in shape for the London marathon and raise even more money for local good causes!

The Summer Reading Challenge 2022 will be launching in Norfolk libraries on Saturday 23rd July.

It’s free, it’s fun, it builds confidence and supports children reading for pleasure. Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer break making it harder for them on returning to school. In addition, reading for pleasure has so many proven benefits including developing empathy by identifying with characters and improving mental wellbeing.

This year the theme is Gadgeteers. It has been produced by the Reading Agency in partnership with the Science Museum Group and is a celebration of science and innovation. It will be delivered by Norfolk Library and Information Service and there will be lots of exciting activities in your local libraries.

Over 700,000 children sign up to the challenge every year. You can sign your children up at your local library from the 23rd July. To join the challenge children will need to be a library member. This is free of charge and children will receive their own library card for which there are no overdue fees.

Children will be given their Gadgeteers pack, have the opportunity to be involved in lots of fun, free activities and get to set their own reading challenge (we recommend six books over the six-week period).

Children choose their own books which can include e-books from our virtual library. The children will collect stickers along the way and on completion of the challenge they will receive a medal and certificate of achievement. There is a digital platform too, so the fun can carry on at home!

Armed forces Day, Northrepps

On 7 June, after an excellent lunch, we had our AGM and on 5 July Chris Bell (who may be familiar from his TV appearances as a weather forecaster on Look East) spoke to us about meteorology.

Triple Gold for lily Motivates Medal Mania at Gala

Lilly Dear achieved a hat-trick of gold medals when she swam for North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club at the UEA in a development gala promoted by Great Yarmouth Swimming Club.

In a very close 50m freestyle, Lilly just out touched Anita Edelinski of Great Yarmouth by just under a second to capture her first gold. However, her second success was the 50m breaststroke when the 10year-old swam four seconds faster than her best to win in 54.60 and ironically beating runner up Charlotte DevSherman of the Norwich Swan Club by the same margin. In the 50m backstroke, Lilly was the clear winner in 49.53 from fellow Viking Grace Parker's 52.16 who took a well-earned silver.

Sheringham and Cromer lions Club

There was a pleasant surprise when debutant Isla Cartwright took a double gold. In the 25m freestyle. The 8-yearold brought it home in 24.85 with an outstanding ten second margin but in the 25m backstroke only the electronic Lily with her three gold medals timing could separate her and teammate Edith Hopkins when Isla won in 28.24 from Edith's silver medal time of 28.66 respectively.

Unfortunately, the Club is closed at the end of June 2022 due to lack of new members, ill health and our increasing ages.

When, over ten years ago, my husband and I moved to Norfolk, where I was born, we joined the Lions Club which changed our lives for the better. We met other people who wished to support their local communities. We also met other people, had lots of fun and made friends for life. It was also a way of getting into the wider world of North Norfolk instead of just the small village where we live.
