Splash to Make Way for the New Leisure Centre in Sheringham
North Norfolk District Council is seeking to take advantage of the current closure of the Splash Leisure Centre in Sheringham to bring forward the completion of its replacement.
The uncertainty surrounding the date of the reopening of leisure centres in England, and the inevitable timescale before they can operate at full capacity, has led North Norfolk District Council to conclude that this hiatus should be used to speed up the completion of the new Sheringham Leisure Centre by demolishing the Splash earlier than had originally been intended.

Splash to Make Way for the New Leisure Centre in Sheringham activities studio covering 200sqm, a spinning studio 96sqm all of which will enable twice as many people to participate in sport and exercise than can currently at the Splash.
Continued from front cover... Excellent progress has been made on the new development, despite the many interruptions of the past year. The new building is scheduled for completion in August this year; however, the demolition of the Splash had not originally been scheduled until after the new centre had opened, in order to provide continuity for users. This would have meant that the car park and landscaping would not have been completed until the end of November 2021.
The building has been designed to Sport England’s accessibility standards to ensure as many people as possible can access the wide mix of facilities.
The new leisure centre has been designed to be highly energy efficient, with state-of-the-art windows and doors to prevent heat loss and high-performance insulation for hot water pipework, as well as ‘presence/ absence detection’ lights for areas with limited use. It incorporates renewable energy systems such as solar thermal collectors for water heating and air source heat pumps.
By reprogramming the works, so that the demolition can take place in parallel with the completion of the new building, Construction company Metnor can save several months on the current plan. Given that it is unlikely that the Splash would be in use (certainly not to capacity) for much of that time, Everyone Active, which operates the centre for North Norfolk District Council, is wholly supportive of this approach. The Council has therefore decided to fast-track the completion of the new leisure centre, so that the whole site, including the car park, will be open to local people and visitors this summer.
The name and logo for the new Leisure Centre will be revealed in the coming months as the building nears completion. Anyone interested in tracking the progress on site can view the time lapse video hosted on the Council’s website.
Everyone Active has done an excellent job of maintaining the operation of the Splash pool, fitness suite and exercise studios, when they have been allowed to open since July 2020, but with the restrictions of social distancing, enhanced cleansing and the interruptions of intermittent lockdowns, that has been increasingly challenging. The costs and the resources needed to remobilise the facility after the current lockdown (whenever that is) are not justified for the short period for which it is likely to be open and the reduced capacity it will inevitably have. The building’s running costs alone for the four-month period (were it to operate from April to July) would amount to some £51,000 and the costs of remobilising the building equate to around £6,500.

A Note from the editor
Things are looking up at last. At time of writing this, nearly 40% of the adult population have had their first vaccine, we have a plan for the easing of lockdown and the sun has started to shine, albeit intermittently. It feels like there is some light at the end of a very long tunnel. We can tentatively make plans for the months ahead and look forward to being able to meet family and friends again. It is still important to observe the rules, but this final push will hopefully mean the end of lockdown living (or existing).

It must be a relief for businesses to be able to welcome us back soon, especially in North Norfolk where our local economy relies on leisure and hospitality so heavily. I suspect we will all have a newfound appreciation for the simple pleasures we took for granted before this pandemic.
Bodham and Beckham Horticultural Show
After the disappointment of having to cancel the Show in 2020 we hope this year to stage a bumper show on Saturday 24th July 2021. This of course will depend on the government’s timetable for easing restrictions being met.
It is Mothering Sunday on 14th March, don’t forget that card and flowers. Clocks go forward on 28th March, an hour less sleep but lighter evenings will help dispel the winter blues. Then Easter is upon us, time for renewal and the promise of better things to come.
So now is the time to get sowing and growing. Many of us have had plenty of time for baking and making so we hope you will use this opportunity to show off your enhanced skills. If you have been one of the people serving your community during all the restrictions please make a date in your diary to come and have a cuppa and a piece of cake and admire other people’s handiwork. We are looking forward to meeting up again. The show is open to all.
Whatever you are doing to get into the spring vibe, enjoy your March magazine.
Keep well and safe. Jo – editor.

North Norfolk Photographic Society Everyone expects tigers – and at Tadoba there they were! Being wildlife photographers, there were also lots of photographs of birds – and a few of the human residents as well! And a few landscapes. Some are born in India and return to see relatives. Others are travellers who go to see the Taj Mahal and other sights. More go there for work or service. A few go to India to take photographs – as did Liz Wallis and Paul Richards who left their North Norfolk home to spend a somewhat hot spell in the sub-continent.
Liz and Paul (who are members of the Society) showed some of their pictures to North Norfolk Photographic Society via Zoom on February 3rd.
The first image shown was not a photograph at all, but a map of India showing the places visited, which started at Delhi and went on to places such as Tadoba, Bharatpur and the Keoladeo National Park.

Sheringham Community First Responders
Sheringham Community First Responders (CFRs) started back in 2007. We work alongside the East of England Ambulance Service attending 999 calls. We have been trained by the Ambulance Service to attend certain types of life-threatening calls in our community that are within the scope of our training.
The group consists of just two members. Over the years we have attended over 5,000 calls in total, on an average we receive approximately 30 calls per month to attend patients. At a peak when we are busy, we can attend almost 60 patients in a month. These calls can vary from cardiac arrest, strokes, falls, breathing problems to someone not feeling well. Most calls we attend are classified as CAT1 or CAT2, but we also attend crew assist where the crew needs another pair of hands.
As a community first responder we are supplied with one set of kit from the ambulance service any additional kit has to be funded by the community. At the moment we buy our own uniforms and use our own vehicles which is therefore a cost to ourselves. We are looking to supply more equipment and update kit that needs replacement. At the moment we do not have the funds to do this and this will therefore have an impact on our service.
As CFRs we give up your free time to cover Sheringham and the local area providing as much cover as we possibly can. With the NHS
under extreme pressure, we have been able to assist with more time as a consequence of being in lockdown and being furloughed. We have been available and responding throughout the pandemic, travelling outside our normal area when needed. To enable us to continue responding during the pandemic the East of England Ambulance Service have supplied us with PPE and training to ensure that we are protected from the COVID19.
We have undertaken additional training to help assist the ambulance service during this difficult time. This has enabled us to support the front-line ambulance service by crewing ambulances and giving more time to the East of England Ambulance Service. We have started to do voluntary shifts from different ambulances stations in North Norfolk to help fill any gaps with staff shortage or to add an additional service.
A few tips to help the Ambulance service and us find your house or location rapidly.
When it is DARK leave as many lights on as possible; it catches the eye.
If you’re up an alley or long drive, leave your cars hazard lights on.
Can someone be on the roadside looking out for us?
If you’re in a campsite a good description of where abouts you are. Entry barriers can be down or locked at night we do not have keys. “I’m in the blue tent” does not help.
REMEMBER Sheringham CFRs turn up in unmarked cars (we may have small signs) LOOK OUT FOR US we are likely to be first on scene with you.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
Nathan Liberman Coordinator Sheringham CFRs
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offe fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

Remember to always follow the key guidance of regular handwashing (and sanitize when out), use face coverings when required and keep 2m from those from other households.

Coastal visits and house parties lead to lockdown fines
Visitors to Norfolk’s coastal areas and people hosting house parties were among 160 people fined for breaching lockdown rules on the weekend of 28th February.
A large number of fixed penalty notices were given to people who had travelled to visit the coast, in particular Sea Palling, Wells and Hunstanton. People had travelled from as far as Leicestershire, London, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire.
Four house parties were also disrupted over the weekend. Two of these were children’s birthday parties in Great Yarmouth. A number of adults who were present at one of the parties where more than 15 people had gathered were issued with £800 fines. House parties with less than 15 people were also found in Attleborough and Thetford, with those attending receiving £200 fines.
In addition to fines, 132 people were given
warnings. Lockdown measures remain in place, with a requirement for people to stay at home, only leaving for a reasonable excuse. T/Assistant Chief Constable Julie Wvendth said: "We have seen a number of blatant breaches this weekend, many by people who live outside of the county who have travelled to coastal areas. A combination of better weather, lockdown fatigue and the impending easing of restrictions will no doubt influence some people’s behaviour.
"However, the ‘stay at home’ rule remains in place and while the roadmap out of lockdown offers new confidence, we still need to take action now to get us there.”
Dr Louise Smith, Norfolk’s Director of Public Health, said: "Most people in Norfolk have done an excellent job of respecting the rules so far and have played a key part in the fall in infections rates we’re seeing now. It is

important that we keep to the rules and stay local to keep numbers of cases down. I know most people will, but where they don’t I support the police in taking enforcement action.”
Cllr Andrew Proctor, Chair of the Norfolk Engagement Board and Leader of Norfolk County Council, said: "The rules are clear – we must stay in our local area for most things including exercise, in order to curb the spread of the virus. The Prime Minister has set out a clear roadmap for the coming months and we need everyone in Norfolk to pull together in that time to keep the number of cases low. Now is not the time to ignore the restrictions that are in place for the protection of everyone locally and nationally.”

Oyster Mushroom
Winter Notes
from the Commons
The three months that make up the meteorological winter - December, January and February have been quite varied with very low and unseasonal high temperatures. We have had a lot of rain and strong winds and a week of snow. Such variations in weather put pressures on all our wildlife. Over the last quarter Mark Clements and I have recorded our sightings on an almost daily basis, especially since the start of the present lockdown and the highlights follow.
At the start of December (01 Dec) we were still recording Chiffchaff with up to two seen (09 Dec). A mild period saw some movement of Common Frogs (12 Dec). By mid-moth (15 Dec), the numbers of Lesser Redpolls and Siskins were increasing and often seen feeding on the seeds of Birch and Alder trees. Over 40 Linnets were also observed using the Gorse as a roosting site. On an old gorse stem the dark form of the Oyster Mushroom was noted (22 Dec) as well as the bright yellowish-orange fungus known as Witches’ Butter.
Fox A Peregrine flew over eastwards (28 Dec) and a Water Rail was heard plus a dog Fox was seen. The Fox was not particularly afraid of people and was seen often for the next few days during daylight. An unusual Wren was photographed by Mark (30 Dec). It had white primary wing feathers, which are caused by a lack of melanin pigment. Such a condition is known as part leucistic and is fairly common in many birds but this is the first example of a Wren we have seen.
Wren
internationally protected habitat. Mowing and collection of the cuttings is carried out simultaneously by a sophisticated Fen Harvester – a specialist tracked vehicle that is designed to have a low impact on such sensitive sites. In January the contractors were on site again, working on the heathlands and the grasslands. The purpose of this work is to prevent Bracken, Gorse and scrub from taking over. The work allows heathers and grasses to colonise, which in turn, attracts more insects.
Areas of bare ground are also very important for insects, particularly bees, wasps and beetles to dig nest burrows. In the cleared grasslands more flowers can bloom, again providing for an array of insects, which in turn benefit reptiles, birds and mammals.
A combined New Year bird count (01 Jan) totalled 45 species including Brambling, Marsh Tit and Nuthatch. A Mediterranean Gull flew east (07 Jan) and a Water Rail was calling from deep cover beneath a flooded area of scrub. In the southern wooded area 12 Lesser Redpolls & a Treecreeper were present (09 Jan). Lesser Redpolls had increased to over 50, Siskins numbered 21 and Redwings had also increased to around 23 by mid-month (13 Jan). A Grey Wagtail was also seen more frequently along the central beck, where it was observed flicking over fallen leaves hunting for an invertebrate meal. The first Red Kite of the year headed west (17 Jan) also some 520 Pink-footed Geese crossed the Commons and a Wood Mouse was observed beneath a Willow. The following day (18 Jan) a Woodcock was seen as was a Brambling and the reed gall known as a cigar gall was found. This gall is elongate (cigar-shaped) and is formed by the reed when a fly – Lipara lucens inserts an egg into the reed stem. The gall is produced when the larva of the fly hatches and bites into the growing reed shoot. This action disrupts the plant hormone balance within the reed and causes the gall to form. The larva feeds throughout the summer then overwinters within the gall as a pupa to emerge as a new fly the following summer. A Mealy Redpoll was found in a flock of 12 Lesser Redpolls (22 Jan). Interestingly the Mealy or Common Redpoll is not classed as separate species but rather as a different geographic race. The Mealy is the north European race and comes to the UK as a winter visitor. It is larger and greyer than the Lesser Redpoll. A Barn Owl was noted over the central marsh (27 Jan) also the leucistic Wren was seen again. A Peregrine passed over eastwards (30 Jan) and two Common Toads were found under some grass heaps.
Gorse Shieldbugs
In mid-December the conservation contractors were on site to mow the central marsh. This is carried out every two years to stop the build-up of rankvegetation and to reduce the high nutrient content. Poor soil and short vegetation favours the highly specialised bog plants such as Sundews and mosses. The marsh is designated as part of the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) known as the Norfolk Lowland Valley Fens – an

February was a month of two halves – first wintery with snow falling from 14th and then ending the month with temperature highs in the teens (C). An interesting visitor was found by Mark just off the Commons at Beeston Priory (01 Feb) – a male Goosander. This is a sawbill duck meaning it has a long serrated bill, which enables it to catch fish. These ducks are only winter visitors to Norfolk, the breeding populations being Scotland, northern England, Wales and south-west England. As the winds turned to the north-east, ahead of storm Darcy (09 Feb), an influx of Woodcock occurred. These birds will move when the temperatures are sufficiently low to freeze their feeding grounds and as the storm advanced across Europe many birds came across the North Sea. The highest count on the Commons was 14 (13 Feb) while many places along the east coast had counts of
Treecreeper over 100. Also on this day three Teal were seen and Redwings had increased, with over 35 (15 Feb) feeding under the trees, where they were scratching through the snow to the underlying leaf litter. A flock of 31 Lapwing headed south-east (16 Feb), another movement probably caused by the cold weather. Once the snow had melted the Barn Owl returned to hunting over the central marsh (17 Feb). Two Red Kites were observed overflying (20 Feb) and with temperatures rising the first Adders of the year were seen. The following day (21 Feb) Mark spotted a Grass Snake on the heath and also saw six Crossbills heading west. The spring-like conditions continued and a Small Tortoiseshell was seen (24 Feb) followed by a male Stonechat (25 Feb) and four Red Kites, a Marsh Harrier and a Peacock butterfly (26 Feb). The following day (27 Feb) a Chiffchaff was singing, five Adders and a Grass Snake were found basking as well as a Common Lizard. Common Frogs were croaking in the main pond and on the Gorse, Honey Bees, Buff-tailed Bumblebees and Gorse Shieldbugs were present. It certainly felt like spring had arrived but will it last or is March going to turn wintery again? To keep up with all the sightings please visit www.beestoncommon.org.uk Francis Farrow Hon. The Gallant Gardener - Know your Onions What do you know about the humble onion?
A vegetable that we encounter every day, a vegetable that brings us flavour and enhances the blandest dish! Where did it come from? It was first found in Asia and was one of the first used by the Egyptians more than 3,500 years ago. It has been found in early China, Rome and across the Atlantic with the native American Indians. It is thought to have
been brought to our shores by the Roman occupation. From one plant comes several different cultivars under the family term of Allium: -Shallots, garlic, leeks, chives, spring onions and welsh onions to name some.
Now is the time to start sowing or planting onions for a crop to be harvested in the late summer - early autumn. Onions can be grown from seed and the seed needs to be sown in a large tray or small modules and then pricked out into larger pots or modules, ready for planting out. A different way of growing onions is to purchase what are known as onion sets, these have been grown last year and are very small bulbs ready to be planted out.
Most onions prefer an open, sunny site but will tolerate some shade. They need a cultivated soil that has been manured for a previous crop. Make sure the soil is firm and friable (raked down to a fine tilth). Plant the onions out with 6”or 15 cm between plants and 12” or 30 cm between rows.
In my photograph is shown a way of growing more onions in a reduced plot by starting five plants in a pot and then planting them out like that, you will get smaller bulbs, however many people like that smaller size.
As the onions grow, be careful to hand weed between plants as they are shallow rooting, apply a nitrogen rich fertiliser or wood ash to the onions which will encourage bulking out of
the bulb. Once the tops start to fall over, turn them away from the sun, so this allows the sun to ripen the bulb and just run your finger around the outside and take away any soil.
Dig up the bulbs when dry and then lay out in a dry airy place to dry further. Once they are dry, clean the outside skins and hang up in a dry, cool, frost free place.
Onions are easy to grow, however they do suffer from drought and you must not let the onion bed dry out as this can cause bolting. This means they go straight to seed as they are under stress.
Onions do suffer from onion fly, downy mildew and onion white rot. The latter can be very difficult, as it causes the bulb to rot from the bottom. It can last in the soil for a considerable number of years and will infect other onions crops if planted in the same place.

New MRI goes live at Cromer and District Hospital
A state-of-the-art MRI machine has gone live at Cromer and District Hospital as part of a £8m imaging equipment replacement programme.
Radiographers Shelley Johnston, Amanda Noyes and Elizabeth Skidmore with the new Cromer MRI
A new Signa Artist was used for the first time on Monday 22 February after the hospital’s old MRI magnet was craned out of the building in November. The development at Cromer and District Hospital will lead to improved quality of imaging and an enhanced experience for patients in the local area.
It is part of a £8m project to replace vital imaging equipment at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which will see the replacement of four MRI scanners and a CT scanner at the Trust. An additional CT scanner will also be added in the Radiology department at NNUH.
Shelley Johnston, Deputy Lead MRI Radiographer, said Cromer’s old MRI was more than ten years old and around 20 patients a day will be scanned using the new machine.
“It is a huge improvement in technology with more advanced imaging and offers a wider variety of examinations and diagnostic quality. It provides more space with a wide bore and an enhanced patient experience,” she said.
The scheme follows ‘Aged Assets’ government funding that was announced in 2019, as well as benefiting from Adapt and Adopt Covid-19 funding. The project also continues at apace at NNUH with the arrival of a new CT scanner on Sunday 14 February and one of the old MRI was craned out of the building over the weekend.
Hedgehog Haven
With the day's lengthening & Spring just around the corner, over the next 4 weeks I will be releasing those who had to be overwintered due to their small size.
They are usually released back to the same area where they were found provided food & water is offered. Hogs will be awaking from hibernation, please keep an eye out for them, as they will be very hungry & thirsty, a dish of meaty dog, cat food or dry hedgehog food along with a dish of water put out at dusk, will be most welcome. Broccoli and Stilton Soup
When the weather is cold and you need something substantial and comforting this soup really hits the spot.
Easy to make, tasty and ideal for freezing it is certainly a favorite in our house. It can be served smooth or chunky and improves on keeping in the fridge for a day or two (if it is around that long!)
Adjust the thickness of the soup by adding more or less potato.
This will easily serve 4 people.
Ingredients 1 large onion 4-6 floury potatoes 1-2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 litre vegetable stock 1 large head of broccoli cut into florets 6oz/180g mature stilton cheese
Method Take a large, heavy bottom saucepan and add the oil and set on a medium heat. Chop the onion and potatoes into 2cm chunks and add to the saucepan, cook until they start to soften but not change colour. Add the stock and broccoli florets, bring to the boil then turn down the heat and simmer until everything is cooked and the potato is soft (about 20-25 minutes). Take off the heat and carefully mash with a potato masher until the soup is the desired consistency. Alternatively, the soup can be liquidized until smooth and returned to the saucepan. Cut the stilton into 1cm chunks and add to the soup and stir until melted. Check for seasoning (stilton is quite salty so do

The Sheringham Shoal Community Fund has made a grant of £25,000 to the Every Child Online initiative which aims to ensure that every young person in Norfolk has access to the digital technology to allow them to learn from home during this period of pandemic lockdown.
The initiative was established by Norfolk County Council and the Norfolk Community Foundation earlier this year when it became apparent that Norfolk's schools and academies would need to supply around 6,000 devices to ensure that all young people in the county had access to the equipment and technology to facilitate successful home learning.
"The Sheringham Shoal Community Fund was established to support projects that would benefit the wider North Norfolk community, and education has always been one of its key criteria," said Karl Butler, the Power Plant Manager of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm. "With two young children of my own, I understand the challenges and difficulties which families have endured this last twelve months across the UK. I am therefore delighted that we are able to support the Every Child Online campaign, helping improve access for children to education."

Plant Power!
I am the absolute last person to want to restrict my diet to a faddy one just because I've seen something on the telly or in the papers, but in this season when our health is foremost in our minds and supporting your body through food has been thrown into stark relief, making good food choices has taken centre stage for me. Having contracted Covid in early November and struggled with Long Covid ever since with a variety of alarming symptoms including high blood pressure (something I have never suffered with) I became determined to try everything I could through nutrition to improve my health. Since mid-January, I have been completely plant based in my diet, not an easy task but an interesting journey of discovery, and one which in just 6 weeks, has seen my blood pressure return to completely normal, and enabled me to come off all other medication I was on. I’m not out of the woods yet on the pain front, but things are steadily, and measurably, returning to normal, which is massively encouraging, and something which I would encourage others to try. With this in mind, I’m going to share some of the tips and tricks I have picked up over this time, so that you don’t have to learn the hard way as I have! Today’s recipe is an absolute cracker, and so versatile. Pesto usually has Parmesan in it, but really does not need it (I know, I was sceptical too, but trust me, this tastes amazing). One of the huge benefits of being plant based are all the wonderful extra nutrients you get from all those beautiful plants, all supporting the health of your body.
Opt for whole foods, not packaged factory based ‘vegan fare’ from the supermarket; think wholegrains, nuts, seeds, olive and coconut oils, herbs and spices, vegetables and fruit as your basic foods, and add in a few ‘treats’ in the form of ‘vegan’ cheeses, organic Tofu and Tempeh (use Tofoo brand, it’s the best) and 70% Cocoa chocolate and yummy dried fruits when you need a sweet hit. Preparation is key if you want to make life easy and are busy; batch cook beans or pulses and pasta or grains at the start of the week to throw in recipes quickly, have home-made veg soup for speedy lunches, make pesto, keep crunchy veg in the fridge to snack on, make hummus, roast a big batch of veg (peppers, red onions, sweet potatoes, butternut squash) to chuck in later. All will keep well in the fridge for up to a week. Even if you eat this way for the majority of the time, but occasionally have to tuck into your favourite meat foods, you will reap benefits. We can’t take control of a lot at the moment, but our food choices are ours to make, and for me, healthy choices have led to a much heathier and happier body.
PLANT BASED PESTO & MUSHROOM TART
For the Pesto (makes 1 batch): Bag of spinach Handful of fresh basil leaves Flat tsp dried oregano Half flat tsp garlic salt (or use 1 garlic clove) 3oz walnuts 3 oz sunflower seeds Juice of 1 fat lemon 3 fl ozs extra virgin olive oil Blend everything together except the olive oil in a blender, then add in the oil slowly to the desired consistency (should be nice and thick). Keep in an airtight container in the fridge.
www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
15
For the mushrooms: 1 large flat mushroom and a good handful of chestnut mushrooms, all sliced 1 tsp smoked paprika A tsp liquid smoke (optional, available in good health food stores or online) Pinch garlic salt Few drops of balsamic vinegar Pinch sugar Fry the mushrooms gently in a non-stick pan until they release their juices, then add in the rest of the ingredients and simmer gently until the juice reduces away, stirring occasionally. (scale up the ingredients to make a larger batch) To make up the Tart 1 pack of Jus Rol Gluten Free Vegan ready rolled Puff Pastry A handful of black olives A little vegan grated cheese if desired (I use Applewood Vegan as it melts well) If you’ve prepped pesto and mushrooms ahead of time, this literally takes minutes to make. Take the pastry out of the fridge about 10 minutes before you need it to come up to room temp, unroll and leave on the greaseproof paper that it's rolled up in. Place on an oven proof tray and score about an inch in all around the outside, taking care not to cut all the way through. Spread a decent quantity of pesto on the tart, avoiding the outside inch that you have scored. Spread the mushrooms around evenly and dot the olives on the tart. Grate on a little cheese and place in a preheated oven on 200° for approx 15 mins or until the outside has puffed up and is starting to colour, and the middle of the tart is bubbling. Serve immediately with a huge seasonal salad. Use the pesto for pizzas or pasta, add to soups or stews or stir into hot new potatoes. Carolyn Burn

Sheringham teenagers sentenced after arson
Two teenage girls have been found guilty of setting fire to a public toilet in Sheringham last year.
In the early hours of Tuesday 1 December 2020, tissue paper was set alight within public toilets on the East Promenade, causing fire damages worth over £1000.
Following the incident, two teenage girls, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were arrested and each later charged with arson, after they shared footage of the incident on social media.
One of the teenagers, aged 14, was also charged with criminal damage, after causing damage to a police custody cell, following her arrest.
The 14-year-old girl appeared at Norwich Youth Court on Thursday 18 February 2021,
where she pleaded guilty to both charges. She was issued with an eight-month referral order to a Norfolk Youth Offender panel and made to pay £150 compensation.
The other teenager, aged 17, appeared at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 11 February 2021 where she pleaded guilty to the arson charge, along with two counts of assault against another teenager on 9 September last year.
For the offence of arson, she was issued with a six-month referral order to a Norfolk Youth Offender panel and was ordered to pay £540 compensation. For the assault charges she received an additional 6-month referral order and was made to pay compensation of £150.
She is due to appear again at Norwich Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 25 February

Taboo?
by Miranda Marshal, Director, Hayes + Storr It is oft said that the Victorians were obsessed with death, but would not talk about sex, and that, in contrast, the western world of the 21st Century is obsessed with sex but will not talk about death. The pandemic is changing that, somewhat. The euphemisms of death are often hilarious. When I first started out as a private client lawyer, people would talk about ‘losing your mother’ which made me think of the ‘departed’ (there we go again!) rather like a toddler who had wandered off. In his book of the same name, Evelyn Waugh in the 1940s made fun of the term ‘The Loved One’, which has now entered mainstream language, even to the extent of being uttered without a hint of irony by Boris Johnson. In our modern fluid and blended society, the term is useful, rather like actors who call everyone ‘darling’ because they can’t remember names.
In 2011 the first ‘Death Café’ was held in the UK to provide an opportunity for people to ‘gather to eat cake, drink tea and talk about death’ in a positive way and now there are 10,000 such ‘cafés’ around the world, including online. A bit of a niche for most, probably. Making the right plans now to manage ‘the inevitable’ gives peace of mind and setting out your wishes makes it easier ‘for those ‘left behind’ ‘when the time comes’.
Unsurprisingly, in 2020-1 there has been a big increase in Will-making. Ancient Romans considered the success of their life to be measured by the respect and love with which they were remembered posthumously and put much ef-
fort into preparation. It was an anathema for them to die without a Will, for that very reason. Why therefore do some people take the line that ‘They can fight over it all when I’m gone, because I won’t be here to see it!’?
Making a Will is the best way to think about the legacy (in the widest sense) that you will leave and how your worldly wealth will be settled – well or badly, it’s your choice.
death. There are usually extras and someone makes money out of selling them but they have their appeal. Make sure you go to a reputable independent undertaker to get yours!
Your funeral, sadly currently a shadow of pre-Covid, too needs careful thought. The Victorians would have been mortified at the utilitarian process of the last year; certainly, no paid mourners, as in Oliver Twist.
If it could be a problem, rather than ignore the risk of a claim against your estate, grasp the nettle and discuss it with your solicitor. Careful noting of your thinking and background are all useful defensive ammunition, should a dispute arise. Making a Will with a good and specialist solicitor is eternally fundamental, but especially where there is an inheritance dispute waiting in the wings.
Please choose the right executors: they should be people you trust and whom you can rely upon to do the job, and to do it well. They should get on, but need not be close. Best ask them too, so it doesn’t come as a surprise from which they recoil, leaving no one to do the job.
Think about whether you want cremation or burial. The former requires two doctors to certify your death as there are no remains to be dug up later (maybe, I have watched too much ‘Silent Witness’ and other police dramas?). Organ donation rules have changed and there is now an opt-out (rather than an opt-in) system. Transplant surgeons want healthy young organs, so those of octogenarians are generally surplus to requirement.
Prepaid funeral plans mean that no one can skimp on your funeral and pocket the funds after your
Digital assets can easily be overlooked. Keeping paper records is considered safer, generally, than electronic data; so, hand a sheet with the information including passwords, to your solicitor to be stored with your Will. Regular updating is important.
And remember, in the meantime, enjoy your time on earth! Miranda Marshall Director - Hayes + Storr miranda.marshall@hayes-storr.com

New walkabout drama brings “doof doof” soap action to two Norfolk seafronts
A ground-breaking new drama set in a Norfolk seaside town aims to bring gritty TV soap opera action to a walkabout audience.
And the up-and-coming young writer penning the script is perfect for the task, as he is one of EastEnders’ apprentice story makers.
James McDermott has created Ghosted as a Covid-busting production which will see the action unfold on the promenades at Great Yarmouth and Sheringham - while the audience wears headsets to get audio snippets that add to the twists and turns of the plot.
The story explores the efforts of five very different teenage friends, after their pal Ash disappears and his clothes are washed up on the beach. It delves into their characters, romances, and secrets which could explain Ash’s absence.
The cast will be chosen this month (February) and Ghosted will be staged in April by St George’s Theatre in Great Yarmouth and Sheringham Little Theatre in a joint venture partly funded by the government’s cultural recovery fund, which is helping the venues not only survive, but seek to expand its programming and diversity.
James, 27 who lives near Holt, said: “I love soap opera and Netflix box sets, which everyone has been binge watching in lockdown, and so wanted to write a play with all plot twists, grittiness and fast paced action of a binge-worthy TV drama”.
“Ghosted features teenage characters from diverse backgrounds and communities representing 21st century life and placing lives centre stage that we wouldn’t normally see in Norfolk theatres”
action including the quiet mutterings. Audio clips into the audience’s headsets will include “voices off”, and phone messages.
”The aim is for Ghosted to be the first in a series of Playwright James McDermott (right) and plays telling an expansive director Marcus Romer visiting Sheringham It is a format new story that will unfold to James, but not to seeking locations for his play Ghosted across several producexperience filmmaker (Richard Batson / SLT) tions, similar to a Netflix and West End director story that unfolds over several seasons” he Marcus Romer, who has done similar work. added. He said: “This is an exciting opportunity to be James has been writing professionally since 2016 after finishing a scriptwriting degree at the UEA. He pens poetry, drama, screenplays – and a future panto for Norwich Playhouse – and has won acclaim for his edgy works. He is currently part of the EastEnders Writers Shadow Scheme, being taught via an online script consultant how to write for the show, and will hopefully get to write his own episode in the not-too-distant future. “We hope Ghosted will be as addictive as your favourite TV series with the audience desperate to find out what happens next and excitedly waiting for the next instalment,” James added. The cast will be “mic-ed up” so the open air, socially-distanced audience can hear all the
creative and adaptable – so we can take theatre to the people, if people cannot return to the theatre. And the grant has enabled us to create new work using young local talent.”
Debbie Thompson, theatre director at both St Georges and Sheringham venues, said: “Ghosted is an amazing, creative piece of work that brings together an experience director and young playwright who both think out of the box. It will give us an exciting, and hopefully Covid-proof production to stage this year even if we cannot open the theatres just yet.”

Casting call for new volunteers at seaside theatre
A rallying call for new helpers has gone out from a seaside theatre, after its vital army of volunteers shrank to a small platoon during the pandemic. During the Covid crisis Sheringham Little Theatre has seen just eight of its 50strong squad of coffee bar servers and ushers return to help during the periods when it was able to open. Now, as it prepares a hoped-for spring return to action from the latest lockdown, the popular arts venue is calling on the community it serves to step forward and bolster the team for the future.
Director Debbie Thompson said: “We simply cannot run without our fabulous volunteers. They do a range of front of house tasks from serving and cleaning tables in the Hub as well as backstage tasks such as costume, set design and lighting to support our small team of paid staff. Many of the current team have been
shielding, so we have vacancies for people who would like to get involved with the theatre, learn new skills and meet new people. Volunteering for us can also help boost people’s CV if they will be looking for paid work in the hospitality sector later.
C
“Covid safety for our staff, volunteers and visitors will remain at the heart of everything we do when we emerge from the current lockdown. We do not know when that will be but we need to rebuild the team now, so we are ready to hit the ground running.”
Plans are being drawn up for a series of exciting new projects this spring and summer, including a mix of professional and community stage productions, films, and drama screenings. Details will be announced when dates are confirmed.
Some of the young volunteers at Sheringham Little Theatre, which is appealing for more to join them. (SLT)
Anyone interested in volunteering – whether they can offer weekly, fortnightly or monthly stints should email debbie@sheringhamlittletheatre.com.
Sheringham church feeds needy local families
Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham provided fruit and vegetable parcels for 86 North Norfolk families over the February half term, following a successful packed lunch project last October.
A team of volunteers gathered at the church on the Tuesday of half term to compile the food parcels from the supplies of fruit, vegetables and eggs which had been provided by Sheringham greengrocers Dawn Fresh at a generous discount.
Another team of volunteer drivers distributed the bags of food on the Wednesday to households in Sheringham, Cromer, Holt, Bodham, Northrepps, and surrounding villages.
The initiative started last October when Lighthouse Community Church, determined to provide some help to the community during pandemic restrictions, contacted North Norfolk Children’s Services to see what they could do. From this, Operation Packed Lunch was conceived in order to provide packed lunches, as the name suggests, for vulnerable families, on four days during October half term.
Following the success of that project, schools, and nurseries in Sheringham and Cromer were approached again to invite families to apply for the free food parcels this time. 86 food parcels were distributed, providing food for over 200 children and their families.
Lighthouse café manager Maggie
Rothe co-ordinated the project, along with church minister Ian Savory and youth minister Pete Skivington. Maggie said “We felt we really needed to just help families in our local community at this time. There are clearly families in need in North Norfolk, and we were very happy to help in this small way.”
Much of the funding for the scheme, along with last October’s project, was provided by the Sheringham Poors and Ploughlet Trust, along with a number of other donations of cash and food.
Ian Savory, senior leader at Lighthouse, who made some of the deliveries, said “It’s great to go out there and simply provide help where it is needed. We will be looking to see what further schemes we can run in future, especially when restrictions ease and we can start to use Lighthouse Café again.”

Keeping your pet away from danger
March marks Toll Barn Vets Pet Poison Prevention Month so it’s a great time to raise awareness of some commonly encountered household poisons.
In the Larder! Chocolate contains Theobromine which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, increased breathing rate, restlessness, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, inco-ordination and seizures. Signs usually occur 4-24 hours after ingestion. The darker the chocolate the higher the theobromine concentration. Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currents are all potentially able to cause kidney failure in dogs and cats. Signs include vomiting, diarrhoea, inappetence, salivation, weakness, lethargy and blood in the urine. Onions and garlic contain organosulphoxides which causes anaemia (low red blood cells) and other problems with blood cells. Japanese dog breeds and cats are even more susceptible to poisoning. Symptoms include pale gums, lethargy, increased breathing and heart rate, vomiting and inappetence. Xylitol is an extremely harmful artificial sweetener found in sugar free chewing gum and sweets. Ingestion causes
a rapid and life threatening drop in blood glucose (sugar) level and liver damage. Signs include weakness, lethargy, collapse, vomiting, tremors and seizures, jaundice (yellowing of the gums and eyes), black faeces and coma.
In the Garage! Antifreeze is very poisonous and attractive due to its sweet taste. Found in screen wash and brake fluid, just one teaspoon can kill a cat and cause kidney failure in a dog. 12 to 24 hours after ingestion the pet can start to look better, but this is usually followed by more extreme symptoms. Signs include drunk-like behaviour, incoordination, increased drinking and urination, drooling, vomiting, panting, sedation, coma and kidney failure.
Rat poison is highly toxic, stops blood clotting and can be fatal. Pets can be successfully treated if treatment is started early. Usually,
we will make the pet vomit to remove any remaining poison from the stomach and then start medication to help clotting function. Symptoms include pale gums, weakness and tiredness, inappetence, collapse, coughing and breathing difficulties, blood in the faeces, urine or vomit. Slug pellets contain metaldehyde which damages the nervous system causing muscle tremors, anxiety, drooling, panting, vomiting, seizures, increased body temperature and uncontrolled bleeding.
Mycotoxins are found in mould including food waste and compost heaps and are highly poisonous. Signs include muscle tremors, seizures, panting, hyperactivity, vomiting, weakness, and uncoordinated movements.
Time is critical with poison cases so if you have concerns about your pet please contact your vet as soon as possible. Our friendly team are on hand 24/7 to advise our clients on 01692 407126.
NGR offer hope to these poor hounds and work hard to find them caring homes. And this is where you could come in. Are you able to offer a foster home or forever home to one (or more) of these lovely dogs? Somewhere safe and warm with lots of love, regular food and a kind hand. Despite their reputation as canine athletes, these dogs don’t need much exercise and make wonderful calm and gentle pets. As a foster carer you would receive all expenses for caring for a dog, covering vet’s fees, food and equipment. This arrangement may suit someone who cannot afford the cost of owning a dog or someone who cannot commit to long term ownership but has a suitable home and a willingness to help out until a forever home is found.
Could You be a Hound Hero?
Like many charities, Norfolk Greyhound Rescue (NGR) have been under pressure during the pandemic. Unable to hold fundraising events has inevitably resulted in a severe reduction in income, but the number of hounds needing help does not stop. NGR is a non-profit organization who aim to rehome Irish greyhounds, ex-racers and those who never made the cut for racing, and now face an uncertain future or sometimes, tragically, an untimely end.
Veterinary Nurse Vacancy
If you are able to offer a foster placement for a dog or are interested in offering a forever home, please contact NGR via their website at norfolkgreyhoundrescue.co.uk. There you can find more information about NGR and how to become a hound foster carer or adopt one of these wonderful dogs.
A Qualified Veterinary Nurse is needed to join our Independent family run 4 Vet, 8 RVN team.
Our purpose built small animal and exotics practice opened 7 years ago and we offer a full range of medical and surgical services including an onsite exotic pet referral service and CT scanning service. Our nurses are an essential and valued part of our team and shifts include Theatre, hospital, laboratory, nurse clinics and reception roles. We see a huge variety of interesting surgical and medical cases and have loyal clients who enjoy attending nurse clinics. No previous experience of exotics is required. We are looking for a full time RVN with a 39 hour week including a half day off each week and a full day off if on call the weekend. A share in the out of hours rota is required but the vets take the phone and care for inpatients. We offer a generous salary, support and funding for CPD including Certificates, payment of RCVS fees and a friendly and supportive work environment to help you to be the nurse you always wanted to be. For further details and a confidential chat please give Nola or Faye a call or email as below
Alternatively, if you are unable to offer a home but would still like to help, donations are always welcome and can be made on the website and once lockdown is eased, why not hold a fundraising event or volunteer to help at an event?

Time To Move On!
Sundown
When we reopened last summer, after what everyone thought was the end of a one-off enforced hibernation, rumours where everywhere about outdoor dining being the only way forward and even the only dining permissible. For this reason, we, at The Grove, invested in a pizza oven and started serving pizza on the lawns, within two weeks, we had to buy a second pizza oven to keep up with demand. The food was great, the wine was flowing and the company was… well that depended on who you chose to bring…

Employment Law: Furlough Leave Frequently Asked Questions
The furlough scheme, also known as a the coronavirus job retention scheme, has been in place for almost a year since it began in March 2020 and with it has come a large amount of questions for employees placed on furlough leave. By December 2020, 9.9 million people had been furloughed with 1.2 million employers using the furlough scheme. The scheme has become bigger than ever anticipated for the UK and has helped saved millions of jobs throughout the pandemic. However, a scheme this size will inevitably have issues, some of which will be discussed below. This article will answer some common questions employees have on the furlough scheme.
I was placed on furlough without my consent. Can an employer do that? Furlough leave is a variation of your employment contract. Usually, your employer cannot vary your employment contract without your consent. If they have done so, and you have objected to the change, this could be in breach of your employment contract. We would recommend in this circumstance you seek legal advice and take a copy of your employment contract with you.
My employer has furloughed me for my full working hours but is still expecting me to work. I have complied because I do not want
to lose my job. Legally, is this right? The simple answer is no. If you are furloughed for your full working hours then you should not be working for your employer in any capacity. You can volunteer or work elsewhere but working for your employer whilst they are claiming furlough payments from HMRC is likely to be fraud.
I have been on furlough leave but my employer has just informed me I might be made redundant. Can they do this? The short answer is yes, this is possible. If there is a genuine redundancy situation, for example a business closure, then it may not be possible for your employer to keep you on furlough leave. If you are unsure and want further guidance, again we would recommend seeking legal advice.
I do not think I am being paid correctly under the furlough scheme. What can I do? In this situation, your first step would be to speak to your employer. If you cannot reach a suitable conclusion just by speaking to your employer, you should seek legal advice on the situation. You may be eligible to bring a claim for unpaid wages.
I am on maternity leave but want to be furloughed as this is better pay. Can I request this? Yes it is possible for this to happen. You would however need to give your employer 8 weeks'
Blackwell Cleaning Services
notice of your early return to work so that they are then able to furlough you. As the scheme is due to end on 30 April 2021, there may be little benefit to requesting this at this stage, unless the scheme is extended (STOP PRESS - now extended to September).
My employer has requested I return to work but I do not think it is safe. What are my options? If you do not feel your workplace is safe, inform your employer immediately and do not go into the workplace. Your employer should try to work with you to resolve your concerns. If your employer tries to dismiss your concerns and discipline you for raising these concerns, you may be able to bring a claim against them in the Employment Tribunal. We always recommend you seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity when raising concerns in the workplace.
If you need further information or require legal advice on any of the points discussed above please contact our expert employment team today. Call 01263 823398, email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk. *This article is provided for general information purposes only and does not constitute legal advice or other professional advice.

Over 1000 extra people have been helped by Cromer and District Foodbank during the pandemic. Yet the number of volunteers manning the foodbank was greatly reduced as many were aged over 70 and shielding.
Volunteer at Holt, Mary Moverley, speaking on zoom for Sheringham’s February Sustainability Saturday, explained how the remaining volunteers continued to help staff the warehouse and office, the collecting and delivering, and the distribution centres in Aylsham, Cromer, Holt, Sheringham, Stalham, and North Walsham. A new centre at Wells Community Hospital is being set up.

In exchange for an e-voucher number given over the phone, enough nutritionally balanced food for three days is provided to people in sudden crisis, and since the pandemic, with a noticeable increase in families.
Voucher referrals are received from agencies such as Citizen Advice Bureau, General Practices, Children Services and Schools. As well as food, extra items may include “Canny Cooking” a basic cookery book, products for personal hygiene, cleaning products, nappies, toothpaste and brushes, cat and dog food, and Winter fuel support.

Non-perishable, in date, tinned or packeted food and other products are donated by individuals, supermarkets, churches and local businesses. Left at collection points or at the foodbanks, the products are taken to the warehouse for date checking, sorting, weighing and making into nutritional parcels. The Foodbank is able to use money donations as well. A relatively new development in North Norfolk is the provision of Community Larders and Fridges where anyone can deliver or take excess food including perishables. Primarily set up to reduce food waste they also are a place people can get food in an emergency.

Hospital thanks community for its support
The community support for the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital has been outstanding says Chief Nurse Professor Nancy Fontaine.
Professor Nancy Fontaine, Chief Nurse, says: “We want to say a big thank you for all the support we have received, both in the first wave of the pandemic and in the last couple of months when we know how hard it has been for families and businesses. It means the world to us when we know our local community has us in their hearts and they are urging us on, however difficult it might be at the time. “The support we have received has come in a variety of ways and from a wide range of people. Local firefighters have been helping to train our staff in the fitting of PPE masks, retired health and social care workers have volunteered to help in our vaccination centre and some have been helping our patients at mealtimes. There have also been such generous contributions from our many fundraisers who have supported us throughout this period.”
Together, which includes the money raised by Captain Sir Tom Moore, and donations direct to the N&N Hospitals charity, there has also been funding for a whole range of initiatives to support patients and staff. These include care packages for patients with cancer, additional rest areas for staff and a system to enable remote support for patients with Motor Neurone Disease.
Local people continue to fundraise for the N&N Hospitals Charity including Simon Kindleysides who is paralysed and using his ReWalk Robotics suit to walk four miles a day to raise money. Budding artist Bethany-Kate McKenzie, 14, has been making badges to raise money for the charity using a machine bought with her own money. A group of NNUH staff have also climbed the equivalent of Mount Everest to raise money for the N&N Hospitals Charity using the stairwell at the hospital – the equivalent of the world’s tallest mountain – requiring them to climb their stairs 369 times to reach the summit.

which keeps everyone safe.
"During the pandemic, our team has increased its infection control procedures for donations, cleaning items or observing a quarantine period.”
Local business consultancy Chamber Bales has also funded goody bags which were given out by the Chaplaincy team to staff working night shifts on the wards, alongside pastoral support offered by the chaplains.
Adrian Woodbridge, Lead Chaplain, said: “The goody bags have been very well received by the staff who are working at night. We’ve been supporting our colleagues with a friendly face and a chat and the drink and snack packs show the staff that local people are thinking of them which gives everyone a boost.’
The generous support from members of the community and Father Darren delivering businesses, includes donations to “We are starting to see a reduction snack packs to staff the Trust’s £800,000 Boudicca The N&N Hospitals Charity has been directing in the number of patients being Appeal to create a dedicated breast members of the public to donate to their Covid admitted with Covid-19 and this is all down to cancer unit at NNUH. Intimate Female Rejuvenation
This does not have to be a taboo subject and you do not have to suffer in silence. Now we have several effective options to improve your intimate and sexual health.
Contrary to popular belief, intimate health does not only concern ladies after menopause. If you look at the history of human evolution- our life span has increased steadily. Pregnancy and childbirth were hazardous events and life expectancy was low. We are all living longer and many women spend more than 50% of their lives with intimate health and menopausal issues such as stress urinary incontinence, urinary infections, vaginal dryness, irritation, discomfort or even pain. Modern lifestyle, diet, alcohol, environmental pollution etc. affect our general and hormonal health also.

First Stink Pipes… and now letter boxes and Danger Mouse u3a Local History Group
As we continue to tread the local streets for our daily exercise there is another item of street furniture which is worth looking out for to add interest to our walks – the humble letter box. A Royal Mail post box stands within half a mile of over 98% of the population and they are an important aspect of our daily lives with engineering, design, and historical interest. There are around 115, 500 pillar, wall and lamp boxes in the U.K.
Some post boxes are rarer than others but each has a story to tell and many have a particular meaning for local communities. Letter boxes have been made in many different sizes and designs over the years and are constantly being improved and this wide variety can be confusing but it is easy to date them as each box bears a Royal Cypher, the initials of the then reigning monarch from Victoria to Elizabeth II.
There are nearly thirty letter boxes in the NR26 postal district and we have so far found the cyphers for Victoria, Edward VII, George V and the current queen. The post box on Ottendorf Green is of particular interest as it is of the iconic hexagonal shape designed by John Warnham Penfold (1828-1909). John Penfold studied architecture and surveying in London and was appointed surveyor to the Goldsmiths Company and took an active part in rebuilding the quarter of the City of London about Jewin Street. (This is now the site of the Barbican Centre) However he is best remembered for the much-loved hexagonal letter box that is named after him.
When first introduced in 1866 the Penfold boxes were painted green, the then standard colour, but this was changed to red in 1874 to increase their visibility. The Penfold box is topped with acanthus leaves, with a flower bud as the finial. The cap is surrounded by a string of moulded balls.
Many of us will have watched the cartoon ‘Danger Mouse’ with our children and grandchildren and will know that Danger Mouse was the greatest secret agent in the world and lived in a post box in Baker Street with his timid and reluctant sidekick, Penfold, a furry hamster- like creature. And yes, Penfold the hamster was given his name as a tribute to John Warnham Penfold.
This is very much local history as John Penfold died here in Sheringham in 1909. Bob Wilkinson, For u3a Local History Group
My darkest and deepest emotion Adds fuel to the fire of commotion; While restraint in a negative pose, Turns the simplest YESES to NOES. My blindness of mind sees no option, When sympathy's up for adoption. There's nothing can make me see sense When trivial doubts seem immense. Daily panic betrays slight improvement, While paralysis hinders each movement; Then motionless staring takes hold With a loathing to do as I'm told.
Each half awake moment's repelling And littered with thoughts so compelling, When down, once again, I feel drawn: Cursing the day I was born. When plumbing the depths of despair, I hear, but see nobody there. Then divergence exacerbates grief, As belligerence beggars belief.
Being told to stay strong and take heed, Is advice far too often I need! Now with thoughts of the end closing fast, Am I worthy of peace that will last?

I'm stuck in a state of depression Where progress is quelled by regression; Where tutelage falls on deaf ears And my prospects are buried in fears.
Self-doubt promotes mirage illusion When recovery's masked by confusion. My tormented heart fills with shame, Fully knowing this isn't a game.

Census 2021, North Norfolk Needs You! The Office for National Statistics – which runs Census 2021 – is working with North Norfolk District Council to deliver a successful census and help local services to fully meet future needs.
census. People can also request a paper questionnaire if they’d prefer to complete the census that way. In areas where lower online completionis expected, around 10% of households will receive a traditional paper form through the post.
Understanding the needs of the nation helps everyone from central government to local organisations, such as councils and health authorities, plan and fund public services across England and Wales. Census outputs inform where public funding is spent on services like transport, education and health – on cycle routes, schools and dental surgeries.
the same way as a postal or food delivery visit.
There is plenty of help available, with people also able to complete the census over the phone with assistance from trained staff via the ONS’ free phone contact centre. The ONS also aims to provide in-person support to complete the census online through Census Support Centres where it is safe to do so.
The main census field operation will begin only after Census Day, contacting those who have not responded. Field staff will never need to enter people’s houses; they will always be socially distanced, wear PPE and work in line with all government guidance. They will be operating in
The census, taking place on 21 March 2021, will shed light on the needs of different groups and communities, and the inequalities people are experiencing, ensuring the big decisions facing the country following the Coronavirus pandemic and EU exit are based on the best information possible. Steve Blatch, Chief Executive at North Norfolk District Council, commented:
“North Norfolk District Council would encourage all of our residents and property owners to complete the Census form, either in hard copy or online formats, when asked to by the Census 2021 team as the information provided is so important in understanding the changing structure and needs of our community over time and ensuring that we secure the appropriate level of funding to provide public services in the future.
"North Norfolk is a fantastic place to live and work, but often the needs of our communities are overlooked as policy makers at a national level have a “tourist's-eye” perspective of the District - and don’t appreciate the high costs of living in rural communities, the true make-up of our local economy and the challenges of an older population accessing acute health services in locations beyond the District which are difficult to access by public transport.
"Information provided through the Census will allow for a deeper understanding of the communities and life experiences of people across North Norfolk in terms of health, education, employment, income, housing tenure and transport and inform policy development and funding for public services in years to come - so please complete the form and make sure North Norfolk’s voice is heard in this national census.”
Paul Walmsley, Census Engagement Manager, added: “the level of advice and support given to me from both the Council and local community groups has been exceptional, I and the ONS team are determined to achieve the best possible Census for all in North Norfolk”.
Households will begin receiving letters with online codes in March explaining how they can complete their online
Census 2021 will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Results will be available in 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations.

Council Approves 21/22 Budget
North Norfolk District Council’s budget for 2021-22 was approved at a full Council meeting on 24th February.
Councillors voted after a debate to approve the proposed budget, which includes a freeze on NNDC’s Council Tax precept residents will be asked to pay and a commitment not to reduce any key services.
Parking charges in Council-run car parks will not increase and the budget agreed will also see the Council inject £550,000 into its reserves, to help ensure key NNDC projects are delivered effectively during the financial year.
These include: - New leisure centre to open in Sheringham in August and within budget - Roll-out of a £1.4m programme to support more affordable homes - Tree planting scheme to plant 110,000 trees in North Norfolk by 2023 under Council’s Green agenda to continue, supported by a £300,000 budget and with two dedicated environment officers appointed - Seafront chalet refurbishments in Cromer and Sheringham with a budget of £101,000 - Implementation of £3m North Walsham Town Centre Heritage Action Zone regeneration scheme to revitalise and re-energise this important North Norfolk town centre - More temporary housing accommodation being obtained by the Council for residents in high housing need, with 11 properties bought or being purchased to date. This is projected to save the Council
£187,000 in a full year by no longer using more expensive bed and breakfast accommodation and providing a better form of housing for homeless residents - Information and Advice Budget doubled, with an extra £70,000 to provide support to residents who are vulnerable and/ or in need of advice and support in the current challenging environment.
Deputy Council Leader and Cabinet Finance Portfolio holder Cllr Eric Seward highlighted the Council’s sound financial position in being able to freeze Council Tax while maintaining and improving the Council’s services.
He said: “I am delighted that the Council has approved a budget that does not burden householders at this difficult time with an increased charge for the services it provides. I am particularly pleased that the Council is able to do this whilst making no cuts to our services and continuing with our ambitious investment programme to improve them.”

When ten-year-old cats, Penfold and Percy, came into care, their previous owners advised us that, although brothers, they did not really get on. Although initially in one pen it was obvious that they would prefer to have their own space so as soon as the adjacent pen became free Percy was moved into it. They do still have contact but on their own terms and are much happier now. These two friendly boys have had health issues but will soon be available for adoption.
clint_brown_1@hotmail.com
If you do feel comfortable obtaining a cat or kitten from one of these sites, always go to collect them, see how they are kept and make sure they are healthy and friendly.
Another instance illustrating that not all cats enjoy sharing their space is dear little Patches. Her owners wisely contacted us because Patches was stressed living in a 6-cat household and had developed cystitis. Poor little girl, she was so stressed that, not only was she using her litter tray for toileting, but also her beds. She was constantly doing little wees. After a course of antibiotics, having her own space. and plenty of tlc this delightful little cat no longer has a problem and has already been reserved, ready to leave for her new home where she will be the only cat.
Last year you may recall that we mentioned that Pauline, one of our long-term fosterers, had given up her two pens as she had health problems and could no longer look after the cats. I am now very sorry to have to advise that Pauline sadly died recently having had a relapse. She will be remembered by all Patches those that had cats from her as a very gentle and kind lady who cared very much for her charges and her own much-loved cats. Our condolences to her husband and two remaining cats
A recent phone call from a member of the public seeking advice, highlights one of the reasons not to obtain a cat or kitten via the internet. The lady concerned was ringing for advice as she had recently purchased a kitten at considerable expense from one of these websites. The advertisement indicated that the kitten was part pedigree (actually, no, it is either a pedigree with pedigree papers or it is a moggy). On arriving at the house to collect the kitten, the seller took her basket and came back with the kitten inside. The lady did not see the mother cat, any other kittens or where the cats were housed. On arriving home, she opened the basket but the kitten would not come out and she did not know what to do as the kitten would not let anyone near it. This kitten has obviously not been socialised at all and will need lots of care to achieve this. Unfortunately, she has not been able to make contact with the seller and could not remember exactly where she went to obtain this kitten and the details have disappeared from the website.

Global Help for Local Charity
Australian labradoodle has trudged 100 miles through the snow of New York to help hundreds of East Anglian families
A four-year-old dog called Sydney has been walking through 12 inches of snow in New York, as part of an international group of fundraisers supporting East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
In January EACH forecasted an operational deficit of £2 million over the next year owing to disruption caused by the pandemic and encouraged people to run, walk or cycle 100 miles during Sydney February, as part of its EACH Mile Counts fundraising campaign.
Jane Rous Milligan, EACH Music Therapist, based at The Nook, the charity’s hospice in Norfolk, has just celebrated her 15th year of
working at EACH and decided to take part. Asking for support from friends around the world to reach a £100 target, she got more than she bargained for as eight plus Sydney and two other pooches opted to join her in taking on the challenge.
Those taking part from the UK were: ● Jane’s stepdaughter, Amelia Rous Milligan, from Norwich, and her dog Bonnie ● Sarah Clulow, from London ● Tracey Turvey, from Newport Pagnell, and her dog Charlie ● Lucy Gatward, from Bristol
Those taking part from the United States were: ● Wendy Farrington and her dog Sydney, from New York ● Aundrea Reno, from California
Those taking part from Australia were: ● Lisa Johnson, from Queensland ● Annette Scolari, also from Queensland
The group’s fundraising target increased all the time as more pounds, US dollars and Aussie dollars came flooding in. They have currently raised over £4,200.
Jane said: “I’ve worked for EACH for 15 years and I wanted to mark my time in some way. I saw the 100 mile challenge for February and knew I had to do it. Feeling a bit worried I wouldn’t make the £100 target, I enlisted friends, who enlisted friends and their dogs! It went from one to an amazing group of women walking and running around the world. Amelia said: “I’m doing 100 miles for EACH because it’s such a wonderful cause. Families face such heartbreak and EACH need our fundraising more than ever. Jane is also my stepmum and is so dedicated to EACH, and music therapy, I wanted to share this experience with her.”
Tracey said: “I’m doing this because it’s for an absolutely amazing cause. I think to lose a child is so awful there are no words, but we can help to support by walking and to know that friends around the world are doing it with us is great.”
Lucy said: “It’s a great incentive to get out in some pretty grim weather, knowing others are doing the same around the world for a truly amazing and worthwhile cause.”
Wendy said: “I’m trudging through 12 inches of snow here in New York, trying to hit 100 miles in February. Why? Because my childhood friend, Jane Rous Milligan, works as a music therapist for EACH. That makes her pretty special and I wanted to support her efforts and help double her money. Friends have joined from California and Australia, and this month has become about love, friendship and coming together for an unbelievably worthy cause.”
Aundrea said: “I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to help Jane raise money for the children’s hospice where she works. All us ladies from each corner of the world are having a great time walking and cheering each other on. It’s been a blast doing this together and raising money for a great cause.”

Annette said: “I’m really happy to have joined this walking team to benefit Jane’s children’s hospice - such a worthy cause. Not only have we raised money for the hospice, but at the same time we’ve raised each other’s spirits during this difficult global pandemic.”
EACH’s service has never been more important as families who have been shielding and providing care alone become exhausted.
