The Sheringham & District Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association was formed in 1950 and today has a Membership of 87, but regretfully we are a generation of the past, only seven of our members are under the age of 65 and staggeringly our average age is 85. Not being put off by this we hold regular social events, which attract an average of well over 30 members, plus guests who are always welcome!

RAFA, if possible, will assist in accessing support services and if necessary, provide assistance, no ex-RAF service person or their family should be disadvantaged.

The long-term concern is about the likely future of the Branch, which would now seem to have few long-term prospects unless new, younger members can be recruited. We need your support - now!

Crossword John

Ivor Duncan who liked to be known as John, died suddenly on 20th March.

I think it was about 25 years ago when I first met John.

I must’ve already said hello to him and his little dog Murray many a time on my walks at sunset.

The first time we chatted was on the Hill overlooking the Sheringham golf course, and John mentioned he’d been doing cryptic crosswords for years, he’d won prizes for his solutions, and also for clues he himself had thought up, and I asked him to give me one of his favourite clues.

I wrote it down and walked down the hill pondering on it, and when I reached the. bottom of the hill, EUREKA, I suddenly got the answer, and I shouted out to John, who I saw was still on the top of the hill, “John, NINCOMPOOP! “John waved his arms and shouted back CORRECT! Some other walkers looked somewhat puzzled by this. From then on, I called him Crossword John, as I knew so many other Johns.

He was kind and thoughtful, for example, Sarah, who works at the Break charity shop, told me how one afternoon he appeared at the door of the shop dressed in silver-service waiter’s garb, white napkin over his arm,

and carrying a tea-tray laden with High Tea: silverware and bone china, scones and all.

He served the tea to her and her assistant as a surprise as he knew it was her birthday.

What a lovely gesture!

And, one night quite recently John came across an elderly man sprawled across the wet and cold pavement; he had collapsed and couldn’t stand. John wrapped the man in his coat, called emergency services, and then waited with the man for several hours until help arrived.

John got up early every day to buy a newspaper and other things for his disabled neighbour. He did washing and gardening for a neighbour, he lent friends money and clothing and equipment, and I know, sometimes he didn’t get things back.

John, in his latter years, supplemented his pension by delivering magazines, and he cleaned holiday cottages, and I well know how conscientiously, fastidiously, he carried out these tasks, so often doing much more than what was needed.

John was a good citizen. I was one of very few who knew that for years in summer evenings he voluntarily cleaned the beach from

Sheringham to about halfway to Weybourne.

From the clifftop I photographed him and Murray collecting the rubbish and I asked him if he’d mind if I wrote a short article for a local magazine about him including the photo with the caption Do You Know This Man? But even if I didn’t mention his name, he was reluctant to let me do this.

John was passionate about injustice. Issues like the Sub-postmasters’ scandal, Hillsborough and The Birmingham Six case horrified him, and he read extensively about these cases.

Lastly, John was a good actor, mimic, and raconteur. Once I asked him to relate a joke to friends, and this he did, brilliantly, and my friends had the best laugh they’d had for many a day. He helped in amateur dramatics, and he could put on a right plummy posh voice and quote Shakespeare most impressively. He also played his drums at weekly singalongs for senior citizens in the Little Theatre.

So, my memories of Crossword John are of his intelligence, his passion for justice and his compassion for people and animals, his good citizenship, and his flair for acting, for drumming, for miming and for telling a joke.

I’ll miss him. Eileen (his sister) and David will miss him. Sheringham will miss him; and as (ex-Tesco) Richard said we’ll miss the light John brought to Sheringham, referring both to his character and to the colourful lights he had in his house and garden. John was a colourful and lovable character.

Salthouse Parish Council has a vacancy for a Parish Clerk.

The Platinum Jubilee weekend is almost upon us, the Queen is the first British monarch to have reigned for 70 years, quite an achievement! Most of us get to give up work and enjoy a leisurely retirement.

There are lots of celebrations happening to mark this once-in-a-lifetime event.

This is a home-based post. Four hours per week, salary £10.50 to £12.35 per hour, depending on experience.

There are six evening meetings per year.

On 5 April, after an excellent lunch at the Links Hotel in West Runton, we enjoyed a talk by Stephen Scott-Fawcett on the topic of “Nepal – now and in the future”. He visited Nepal in 2005 and many times since, and his wife is Nepalese.

If you prefer to mark the occasion in a quieter fashion and do something to benefit the environment, why not ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’? This is the Queen’s Green Canopy tree planting initiative to create a legacy to benefit people, wildlife and the environment for the future.

He began by giving us some basic facts about Nepal, e.g., it is about half the size of the UK, with a population also about half the size of ours. Geographically there are three main areas: the high Himalayas close to the northern border, then the central ‘hilly’ area (to us still mountainous!), and the fertile plains in the south. 123 languages are spoken and about half of the population speak official Nepali. 80% of the population is Hindu. Until about 1860 Nepal was a collection of many small kingdoms, which thereafter gradually merged and in 1923 Nepal became a single independent nation. Politically it has had its problems, for instance the civil war in the late 1990s and early 2000s and also there is the need for more widely available educational and employment opportunities. The population is patriarchal in many ways, although in the home it is the women who have the say! Transportation is a problem, which is not surprising given the mountainous terrain.

Retro Comedy Comes to Sheringham

A hit West End comedy from the 1980s is coming to Sheringham Little Theatre this June. Described by The Guardian as ‘the most enjoyable piece of theatre seen in months’, One O’clock from the House revolves around the increasingly hilarious events immediately following the unexpected death of the head of a dysfunctional family.

Frank Vickery’s rich dialogue, and beautifully drawn comic characters, soon weave their spell as the audience is taken on a journey featuring almond-free almond cakes, a pet shopping trolley called Rover, and a cruel posthumous joke.

Audiences as far and wide as Australia have been thoroughly entertained watching this ordinary family gradually fracture, as it becomes progressively consumed by selfishness and greed!

‘One O’clock from the House’, is being presented by local amateur theatre company, Stage Direct who recently mounted the successful production of ‘Miss Marble Takes a Break’ at the same venue.

Performances will be 16th-18th June commencing at 7.30pm: tickets are available from the Sheringham Little Theatre box office and online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

This production is a fundraiser for the Little Theatre!

North Norfolk u3a ‘Summer Happenings’

time in your life (not necessarily chronological) when you can undertake learning for its own sake. Members are certainly not working towards qualifications they’re simply learning for pleasure. There is no distinction between learners and teachers – everyone could take a turn at being both if they wished.

The North Norfolk ‘u3a’ is 30 years old this year and to celebrate it is holding three events to mark the occasion.

Because the North Norfolk ‘u3a’ covers a large geographical area they will be spread out over the county: Fakenham in May, Sheringham in July and Cromer in September.

If you didn’t know the ‘U3A’ started in France at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Toulouse in 1973. The UK ‘u3a’ movement is based loosely on the French model and aims to encourage groups of people in their third age to come together and continue their enjoyment of learning in subjects of interest to them.

Members of the u3a will be invited to one of the three informal gatherings which will provide the opportunity to socialise with old friends, meet with new and enjoy afternoon tea. The National ‘u3a’ organisation, the Third Age Trust, came into being forty years ago so it’s a great opportunity to celebrate the ‘u3a’ both locally and nationally.

In the Loop with Sheringham Town Council Annual Parish Meeting (APM)

Our sincere thanks to all the residents who attended the APM on 26th April. We had a great turnout, and it was fantastic to be able to report everything the Council is currently working on and our exciting plans for the future. It was even more inspiring to hear what local groups and organisations are doing – Sheringham in Bloom, Carnival Committee, Playing for Cake, Sheringham & District Society, Experience Sheringham, Little Theatre, Woodfields School, Sheringham Community Art Project – to name a few.

It is amazing just how much goes on in Sheringham, and to learn just how many volunteers give up so much of their time to support the local community. The meeting minutes will be available on the website shortly. We would encourage everyone to take a read.

We are currently looking at making improvements to our website. If there is anything you would like to see on the site that is not already there, please do let us know. Our aim is for the website to contain lots of information but also to make it

easy for residents to find. We want the website to be a good user-friendly community resource.

We have received several tenders for the new street lighting and a decision will be made at the May Council meeting with regards to a contractor. We are aware that there are a few lights which need maintenance but as we are about to have the lights replaced, we do not consider it best practice to spend a lot of money on maintenance. Any light issues that are a health & safety concern will be repaired.

Our next Coffee Morning talk on Thursday 26th May will be given by Paul Richmond. Paul will talk about Enterprise Sheringham, a new initiative for the town, which it is hoped will involve organisations such as ours, not just businesses.

Paul was involved for many years in the Chamber of Trade and played an active part in Sheringham Regeneration from 2004. The doors of St Joseph’s Church Hall open at 10 am for coffee or tea and delicious cake. All welcome.

At the April event Gary Italiaander made a welcome return with insights into the Steinway Piano Company through his personal experiences. Using a series of photos and short videos, he went through the many fascinating, highly skilled stages in the creation of the famous grand piano, from the wood to the beautifully – and sometimes customised finished article. Together with celebrity cameos and by playing short pieces on the harmonica and piano, Mr. Italiaander created impressions of music that were enthusiastically received by an appreciative audience.

The society is still seriously short of volunteers after the hiatus of the Covid lockdowns. Before Covid we were able to welcome visitors to the Lifeboat Museum and Shell Gallery between noon and 4 pm nearly every day during the summer season, usually with volunteers doing two hours each, but on some days now we are unable to open at all.

At our recent AGM our long-serving Chairman, Peter Strudwick, stood down, becoming Vice Chairman and we welcomed a new Treasurer, Barry Blacklock. Peter and our retiring Treasurer, Barbara Emery, were presented with gift vouchers in appreciation for their long periods of service.

“No Fault” Divorce is now happening From 6 April 2022 the most radical reform of divorce law for decades came into operation.

Previously a divorce could only be based upon “fault” with a husband or wife blaming the other for the breakdown of their marriage.

That has now changed and is no longer required.

The new law includes significant changes in terminology that Solicitors and clients will need to come to terms with. More fundamentally however is the potential for a divorce to take place on a joint application and ending the possibility of someone seeking to defend the divorce.

There is now a minimum period of 20 weeks from the commencement of the divorce to the application for a Conditional Order (previously Decree Nisi).

This is to enable a cooling off period and time for reflection whether it is actually referred to that or not in the legislation. It remains to be seen whether reflection will take place because the vast majority of people starting a divorce will have come to the conclusion that they wanted a divorce before the proceedings were started rather than mid-point. There then remains the same six-week period between

the Conditional Order (Decree Nisi) and Final Order (Decree Absolute) as previously.

A minimum period of 26 weeks now applies to a divorce. This is about the length of time that a divorce was taking place under the old legislation although with all these timescales it is subject to potential difficulties with the digital format and procedure that the Court now has.

There is also the potential for a Respondent to try to delay a divorce by not acknowledging receipt of the application but the opportunities to delay or try to stop a divorce are much more limited under the new rules and procedure.

Overall, the aim is to try to ensure that the divorce itself can take place more amicably.

The position remains that in most cases it is rare for a husband and a wife both to want a divorce and it is often only one party that is seeking this whereas the other might be reluctant or not want the divorce at all.

What the new rules do however is to prevent a spouse from defending the divorce and so it is hoped that animosity is prevented over the actual divorce itself. It does not change the situation regarding disputed arrangements for children or financial matters which still have to be dealt with although if the divorce itself is dealt with more amicably the hope is that ancillary aspects are not going to be soured

right from the outset by allegations made in the actual divorce.

Harry was brought to me he’d been found in a crab pot and had got completely entwined in the string, the finders had cut of as much as they could, but I saw straight away it would be a visit to the vets as it was tightly round his legs as the more they try to free themselves the tighter it becomes, he has had to have a small operation, as unfortunately the string had cut deep into his right front leg down to the muscle, hopefully with time it will heal so he can be released back into the wild.

Aylsham Open Gardens Weekend 18th and 19th June 2022

Gardens in Aylsham will be open over the weekend of 18th and 19th of June. We are pleased to be able to welcome everyone back to this event after a two-year break.

During that time people have been working hard in their gardens, completing new projects to make them interesting, beautiful and inviting. We have over 12 gardens open, half of these are new to the event, so lots of new things to see.

will be an artist’s studio open in one of the gardens, another will be demonstrating how to create and care for bonsai and on the Saturday Eve’s Hill Vegco market garden in Aylsham will be joining the event and be open to the public for a tour and a talk.

The gardens display a variety of styles, large and small, wild and formal. Refreshments will be available with light lunches, teas, cakes and ice-cream. There will also be plant sales. To add interest there

Aylsham & District Flower Club

Aylsham & District Flower Club will be meeting in Aylsham Town Hall on Wednesday 8th June for a Workshop evening led by our Chairman Crystal Dyball. Doors open 7pm for 7.30. Tea/ coffee on arrival if required. Sales table and Flower of the month competition. Crystal has chosen a Basket Arrangement for her demonstration before members and visitors try their own version. All welcome to take part or watch if preferred. This is usually an evening of fun and laughter as well as learning!

Garden-lovers Gear up for Creake Abbey’s Annual Plant Lovers’ Day On Saturday 28th May the region’s gardenlovers will flock to Creake Abbey, the beautiful monastic site three miles south of Burnham Market in north Norfolk, for Plant Lovers’ Day, its annual botanical bonanza.

Diana Brocklebank Scott, founder of Creake Abbey, said: “Gardening has never been such an important resource for nurturing ourselves as well as the environment. We are all becoming increasingly aware of the impact that wildlife-friendly gardens can have on biodiversity as well as on carbon capture.

With the correct care and attention, our gardens should fizz with plant and insect life. Creake Abbey’s Plant Lovers’ Day is the perfect place to refresh your garden, regardless of its size, with new, interesting and healthy plants.

As always, visitors to Creake Abbey will be offered delicious breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea by the Creake Abbey Café & Food Hall together with takeaway coffee, cake and snacks. Once again, proceeds from the day will go to Wells Community Hospital Trust at Wellsnext-the-Sea. Over the past 14 years Creake Abbey has raised over £28,000 for the hospital through its annual Plant Lovers’ Day and subsequent donations. The hospital has been providing health and wellbeing services in Norfolk for more than 100 years. Alongside clinics, the hospital is spearheading services for the community including a foodbank, community café, social groups as well as a program of exercise classes. Reg charity no. 1154540 Sarah Peberday, General Manager of Wells Community Hospital Trust, said: “Wells Community Hospital Trust is delighted to be chosen once again to be the beneficiary of the 2022 Plant Lovers’ Day at Creake Abbey.

Sheringham and District Philatelic Society

Now that Covid restrictions are less onerous, the Sheringham Boathouse and shop will now be open more regularly to showcase the work of the station, with the Boathouse Shop aiming to re-open on 1 May.

The AGM for the Sheringham and District Philatelic Society was held on April 11th with 13 members present. All were keen to continue meeting as a Society but it was decided that, in the present Covid infection situation, to entertain ourselves with in-house displays on most occasions. However, Peter Boyce, from Norwich and Norfolk PS will show stamps from New Guinea and Papua and also Greek Architecture on June 13th.

Fittingly, the lifeboat returned to our dedicated crew in the 60th anniversary year of the support given to Sheringham RNLI by the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, a group that have steadfastly supported them since late 1961. Since then, the Fellowship has provided three working lifeboats to the station and, also purchased three retired boats so that they can be displayed at the Mo Museum in Sheringham. The displays at The Mo bear testament to the dedication of the Sheringham crews since the first private lifeboat The Augusta launched in 1838.

The support of the Oddfellows, both to the residents of Sheringham when pre-NHS they provided basic health support, and to the RNLI over the past 60 years is truly appreciated and thanks to them, many lives have been saved. Sheringham RNLI Chairman Phil Hawes says: ‘We are indebted to the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows. Its support is invaluable, and we would wish it known that members of the Fellowship visiting Sheringham will be made most welcome at the Lifeboat House.’

During that same six decades, the evergreen and ever-present Trevor Holsey has been a stalwart of the team and now clocked up an incredible 60 years of service to the RNLI. As many are aware, this is a 24/7/365 commitment and Trevor has enthusiastically fulfilled many roles at the station including Second Coxswain and Deputy Launch Authority (DLA) for many years. Although Trevor has retired as a DLA he still manages and supports the operational activity of the station and coaches and mentors the shore and lifeboat crew.

I know lots of people don’t even like to acknowledge that their pet could be carrying fleas, but it is fact – If you have a pet, you could have fleas. And the unfortunate part of the problem, as some of you are well aware, is that with the advent of central heating fleas have become a year-long feature.

Signs of a heavy flea infestation on your pet include: scratching, biting, showing other signs of discomfort, scabby or irritated skin, and you may see visible signs such as adult fleas or flea dirt.

However, some pets (especially cats) will groom adult fleas and flea dirt from their coats making it impossible for their owner to see evidence of a flea problem.

Here’s how you can check your pet for fleas (if he/she will cooperate!):

Sit your pet on a bit of white paper and rub its coat vigorously for a few minutes.

This should dislodge flea faeces (“dirt”) from the coat which will fall onto the paper. Remove your pet from the paper

It’s that time of year again… the weather is warming up and some of you are thinking about flea control for your pet.

and tip what is left on the paper onto some wet cotton wool or kitchen roll. Over the next minute or so the dried blood in the dark flecks of flea dirt should dissolve to a lighter shade of red.

An important thing to remember is the adult flea represents only 5% of the flea problem. The rest is made up of eggs, worm-like larvae, and the pupa stage.

Fleas are a permanent ectoparasite, meaning that once they land on your pet they stay there until they are removed by grooming or they die. Adult fleas usually live for a matter of days on your pet, but since a female can lay up to 50 eggs a day they have usually deposited 200 eggs in

your house before they are finished.

Another very important fact involving the flea life-cycle is that once the larva are safe in their cocoons as pupae, there is no product available that will kill them. They can stay protected in this state for months and hatch out in less than a second when your pet is close by. This is one of the reasons year-long, consistent flea prevention is so important If you find evidence of fleas on your pet, it definitely means you should be treating them. But remember, just because you don’t see evidence doesn’t mean your pet isn’t suffering from flea bites. There are now a wide variety of products and formulations for treating and preventing fleas ranging from sprays, spot-on, tablets and injections for cats. An integrated plan consists of using products that will kill adult fleas and products that treat the environment (house, car, kennel, etc).

Speak to your vet about what combination of products would be best for you, your pet, and your home.

Salvation Army Grateful for Vital Funding

Salvation Army leaders who received funding from the Norfolk Community Foundation to help feed vulnerable people say it has made a huge difference.

Through participation with families directly, other agencies and schools supporting people across Norfolk, the voucher scheme has helped the church and charity develop relationships and build connections for a more joined up community. 12 branches in Norfolk were supported by the Norfolk Community Foundation through its Household Support Fund to purchase and distribute £50 food vouchers.

The Salvation Army also worked with other agencies who referred families to its Toys and Tins appeal at Christmas. The agencies

distributed the vouchers to the families they work with. One agency, supporting young people moving into independent living, used the vouchers to teach budgeting skills through the process of buying staple foods, whilst another worked with a small group to shop and prepare meals together.

Not only did the vouchers assist struggling households with buying essentials, but they also led to The Salvation Amy connecting with people who would not normally use its services. The Salvation Army offers a range of assistance from employment and debt advice to participation in a range of well-being and social activities.

Carol McKean is community manager in Sheringham. She said vouchers were distributed to 150 households.

She added: “When we were told we had

access to funding, we immediately identified lots of families experiencing hardship. People are paying more national insurance; fuel costs have gone up and food costs are spiralling.

People are worried and panicking.

“These vouchers made a huge difference to those households who are getting support and eased the strain for a short period of time. The families were hugely grateful.”

Carol said The Salvation Army in Sheringham worked closely with schools, other churches and local children’s services to identify vulnerable people and families.

She explained: “We all worked together to meet the needs of families who needed help the most. But any of us may need support as we go forward.”

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

With the Platinum Jubilee around the corner, I got to thinking what would be a good recipe for this month?

Drain the pineapple rings and dry off on kitchen paper. Melt together the soft brown sugar and 60g of the butter in a saucepan over a gentle heat.

Spoon into the bottom of the cake tin and arrange the pineapple rings in the bottom of the tin. Place a glace cherry on the centre of each ring.

Sift the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl, add the eggs, vanilla, remaining butter and milk and mix with a hand mixer (or by hand) until smooth and well combined.

I decided it should be something retro but appropriate for making and sharing if you are having a get together for the occasion.

Spoon the mixture over the pineapple rings carefully, level and bake in the oven for about 30 minutes or until risen and golden.

When cooked, leave in the tin to cool for a few minutes, run a knife around the edge to loosen and place a serving plate over the tin.

Hold the tin and plate together firmly and turn over. Remove the cake tin and leave to cool.

I remember my mother making this cake when I was little, and what a treat it was served up with custard, or on special occasions, cream, (or in those days Dream Topping, remember that?).

NB: If making a sandwich cake, double the sponge mix ingredients, divide between two cake tins and omit the pineapple and melted sugar/butter mixture for the bottom sponge.

The recipe makes a single layer cake, but for a special occasion you could double the quantity of sponge mix and bake one layer without the pineapple, then sandwich it with your choice of jam and cream or buttercream. A feast fit for a king, or queen!

Weybourne WI Learn how to Create a Family Tree

Ingredients

Large tin of pineapple rings Glace cherries 4 tablespoons soft light brown sugar 175g caster sugar 3 eggs, beaten ½ tsp vanilla extract 175g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tbsp whole milk 235g softened butter plus extra for greasing

Over 30 members met at Weybourne Village Hall on Wednesday, 6th April.

The afternoon began with the customary business meeting and forthcoming events were discussed, which included an outing to Great Yarmouth in June and the ACWW walk, which was to take place on 19th April. A cheque for £100 had recently been sent to ACWW, which comprised of donations from the last walk and proceeds from our competition table.

Method

Preheat the oven to 180C. Thoroughly grease a deep 20cm (8 inch) round cake tin (two if doubling the mixture to make a sandwich cake).

Celia Howe, President, gave feedback following the recent Federation Annual Meeting, where Weybourne WI was presented with the Adviser’s Accolade for a Large WI, which had been awarded in 2019.

Our speaker for the afternoon was Debbie Bradley, who is a member of Sheringham WI and also a professional family history researcher. (DB Genealogy).

Debbie gave us a very interesting power point presentation on how to create a family tree and showed the variety of sources which can be used to discover information about our ancestors. She suggested we start with ourselves at the bottom of the tree and build from there. She stressed the importance of speaking to relatives, who may have family stories and photographs, or have even begun to research a family tree themselves. In addition, a lot of information can be found online, or from birth, marriage and death certificates, census results and service records. There are numerous free resources available and libraries often provide access to free websites, if you are a member.

Debbie finished with the warning ‘don’t believe all that you read’, as apparently, there are often errors in information that has been recorded on certificates, etc.

We all found the talk fascinating and there were several questions from members. I suspect many of us will have been inspired to make a start on finding out more about our ancestors. Pat King gave a vote of thanks.

Running Wild!

Nettle and Pea Soup

They say the best things in life are free... which is just as well given how expensive everything else is suddenly becoming. If you’re feeling the pinch financially, one easy way to save some money is with your food shopping. I find that making a meal list for the week (I know, it’s another chore, but so worth it) saves me from falling into the temptation traps set for us by the evil geniuses behind supermarket marketing.

A little olive oil 1 large white onion, finely chopped 1 large jacket potato or a good handful of new potatoes, skin on and chopped into chunks A couple of sticks of celery, chopped 20 to 30 heads of nettle, leaves stripped from the stalk and well washed Vegetable stock Half a small pack of frozen peas, defrosted 4 to 5 sprigs fresh mint, chopped Tsp miso paste, mixed with a little warm water (optional)

Given how important feeding yourself is, and how much we enjoy it, is it really too hard to give yourself half an hour to decide just what you fancy eating for the next week? The other outrageously easy win is to eat wild food.

Instead of looking at nettles like the enemy, encourage them in your garden and consider them a crop!

Gently fry the onion and celery in a little oil over a medium heat for 5minutes, and then add in the chopped potato. Add the nettles and stir until wilting down, and then the stock to cover

They are so tasty and good for you, and really easy to incorporate into your recipes, as below. They also make a gorgeous tea, when paired with other herbs or even fruit.

At the moment, you can easily pick Garlic Mustard which can be cooked or eaten raw as a salad, Wild Garlic, which can be gently wilted or again eaten raw in salad, and my favourite at the moment is Cleavers, otherwise known as Sticky Willy, a rampant weed that is incredibly good for you, and can be cooked into soup or brewed into tea.

Save money by getting creative with the wild harvest available to us, and base meals around deals on potatoes, vegetables, pasta and rice. Use more dried beans and pulses in your recipes to bulk them out, such as lentils in bolognaise or chilli and beans in soups and try to bulk buy staples such as tinned tomatoes, frozen vegetables, oatmeal and pasta.

Make your own flat breads and garlic bread with strong wholemeal or white flour, and buy sundried tomatoes and roasted peppers in oil, making use of the oil in the jars for cooking to combat the recent shortages in cooking oil.

And of course, grow your own veg and herbs if you can, to supplement what you buy; seeds are cheap to buy, and you can use old yoghurt or butter tubs and pots to grow your seeds in. When picking wild plants, don’t take the whole plant, try to pick away from busy roads and wash everything well.

North Norfolk Croquet

When Alice was having her adventures in Wonderland, she played croquet with the Red Queen. Flamingos acted as the mallets, hedgehogs as the balls (when they were not running away) and the hoops were provided by life size playing cards.

To my knowledge, no croquet like this is currently played in North Norfolk. However, we at Bodham Croquet Club are keen to uphold the sport in its somewhat more modern form. This article hopes to encourage potential local players to come and join us - from Wells and Fakenham in the west to Cromer and North Walsham in the east. Two dates in May have been reserved for us to “meet and greet” you (see below).

We suspect that there are numerous croquet sets in North Norfolk – some no doubt hidden away at the back of garden sheds, while others get used by families and friends on their back lawns on warm Sunday afternoons. Most families have their own “house” rules for their play. Hopefully some of these players would like to develop their skills further.

Amongst the variation of rules, there are two

fundamentally different versions of the game, each with its own set of “official” rules (defined at the national/international level).

The traditional version (as no doubt Alice tried to play) is known as “Association” croquet.

Association croquet is a lot like snooker – a game entailing bonus shots which allow the player to build up “breaks” on the lawn (going through several hoops during the one visit to the lawn). The opposition has to wait patiently until the break finishes.

The alternative version is “Golf” croquet. Here there are no bonus shots – all players are on the lawn and each side plays alternate strokes trying to be the first to score the next hoop. Golf Croquet is interactive and social and a more accessible game than Association.

At Bodham we provide opportunities for both Association and Golf versions.

What can we learn from celebrities who died without making a will?

Celebrities often have professional advisors who look after their business affairs.

However, like many people, sometimes they do not get around to making a will.

When you die without a will, predetermined laws of intestacy decide who should inherit your estate, and while these laws seek to deal with matters in a fair way, they do not consider modern family structures, family dynamics or personal wishes.

Prince’s lesson for philanthropists Family feuds over who should inherit are harder to settle where there is no will, as the person’s wishes remain unknown. After Prince died, intestacy rules meant that all his assets passed to his siblings, leaving his five half-siblings without a share of his estate.

Had Prince made a will, he might have chosen to make gifts to his half-siblings as well. He may also have chosen to leave legacies to the various charities he gave generously to throughout his lifetime, something which cannot be achieved without a will.

Rik Mayall’s lesson in tax planning Intestacy is often not the best approach when it comes to tax planning. When actor Rik Mayall died intestate, his wealth was subject to a substantial inheritance tax liability that might have been reduced has he planned his affairs during his lifetime. One of the most important ways to benefit from available tax savings is with a will.

Pablo Picasso’s lesson to save delay and costs Without a valid will, a complex and extensive estate can be difficult to deal with, resulting in unnecessary delays and high costs. Whilst an average estate takes around one year to administer, when Pablo Picasso died without a will his estate reportedly took six years to settle and cost approximately $30 million.

Amy Winehouse’s lesson for entrepreneurs

Intestacy rules do not consider the continued management of estate assets like a business or intellectual property such as royalties from music. Amy Winehouse’s intestacy resulted in her £4 million estate being almost entirely depleted within two years of her death after her companies passed into the control of her parents. A will would have allowed her to appoint an appropriate person to manage the companies on behalf of her beneficiaries to ensure they remained viable assets.

North Norfolk Open Studios is Back

After a very successful first year, North Norfolk Open Studios is back this Spring with even more local artists taking part.

135 local artists have now joined the co-operative, which was formed in December 2020 in the hope of being able to open studios last Spring. As it turned out the studios were allowed to open with appropriate health precautions and over 7,000 locals and visitors took the opportunity to meet artists, see how and where they work, and to buy work.

This year studios all over North Norfolk will be open from 28th May - 5th June, coinciding with the bank holiday and half term week.

place to visit in itself. The studio is a World War 2 bunker like building which was a lookout post. Tucked away outside West Beckham, it's close to one of the highest points in Norfolk.

Also, part of the South of Sheringham trail are Joannie Sandford Cook and Mo Teeuw in West Beckham, and Victoria and Martin Kurrein in Baconsthorpe.

All the artists are looking forward to welcoming visitors again this year and any necessary health precautions will be observed. It's a great opportunity to buy original work as well as prints and cards directly from artists and to talk to them about their work.

Italian Stargazer Who Wanted a Closer Look

Galileo’s dad wanted to call him Fred. But his mum said he should have a cool name just in case. So, Galileo Galilei it was.

In Spring 1609 Galileo heard about an invention in the Netherlands which brought things closer. Aha, he thought. I don’t need a canon after all.

The young Galileo was obsessed with the sky. As his father would say “he was born sunny side up”. But he warned his young son: “Stop looking up all the time or you’ll get run over”.

By an early age Galileo figured there were lots of stars. Lots. And he wondered how he could get a closer look. He considered being loaded into a canon and fired up to see them.

But he thought his mother might not be too happy with that.

To the stars? In those days most people didn’t go far. Down the pub and back was as near an adventure as many got. A few brave souls got into boats. Some were never seen again. “That proves,” said his father “the world is flat. They fell off the edge.” He knew his science.

In Galileo’s home town of Pisa some would gaze in puzzlement at the leaning tower.

And ask why? Galileo had an idea. Having thrown all kinds of objects from the top and apparently failing to kill anyone, he discovered the speed of fall of an object was not proportional to its weight. Eat your

The Italian Inquisition was on hand to disabuse people of all such nonsense. The ageing Galileo got on the wrong side of them and was put under house arrest for the rest of his life.

At least his mum was right: Galileo had

a better ring to it than Fred.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society were pleased to welcome Jim Hartje as our judge for the final digital competition of the season.

Jim is a long-standing judge from Peterborough who, for various reasons, judged the images on Zoom instead of attending in person. There was a high standard of images, particularly wildlife and Jim held back 12 images for awards out of the 66 entries. As this was an open competition, and not on a theme, there was a

Mindfulness through Art

No: 100 Group, Royal Air Force - Reunion 2022 & 2023

Norfolk County Council Adult Learning Wellbeing Programme Coordinator John Madeley contacted Age Concern North Norfolk last year to see if we were interested in them delivering courses to our clients in the Day Centre. The courses are art and craft based but with mindfulness and well-being at their heart. As face-to-face tutoring might have been difficult, they even gave us a laptop to facilitate on-line courses.

We have had several sessions with the tutor Jennie and have covered art inspired by music, rock painting and fingerprint art. The workshops are fun and give our clients the opportunity to express themselves using a range of art materials and music. The sessions also teach our clients about famous artists and their techniques while looking at strategies to help with well-being.

Several people made Easter cards and one gentleman made a ‘Get Well’ card for his wife using his fingerprints to depict a row of balloons. His wife was thrilled to receive it.

All our clients demonstrate exceptional concentration during these workshops and gain a sense of achievement and feelings of well-being and confidence afterwards.

These sessions will continue for several weeks at the centre and are helping support staff to develop future activities building on what they have also learned.

In 1943 the Allies formed No: 100 Group to provide aircraft for electronic countermeasures and intruder operations over the European continent. The group flew from seven airfields in North Norfolk and included bomber and fighter aircraft. It was manned by both RAF, US and Commonwealth aircrew and groundcrews.

More detailed information on No: 100 Group and the activities of the No 100 Group Association can be found at: https://raf100groupassociation.org The association has held reunions since WWII and the next get together is over the weekend of 20/22nd May 2022.

On Sunday the 22nd May, the association is to hold a memorial service at St Peter’s Church, Haveringland located on the peritrack of the former RAF Swannington, an airfield near Cawston, which was part of the group. The service starts at 1330hrs and will include a wreath-laying, a flypast by a Tiger Moth, followed by 1940s entertainment and a buffet inside the church. All are cordially invited to attend.

The 80th anniversary of the formation of the group will take place on 21st May 2023.

Gold Rush For Vikings

It was the time for the junior swimmers of the North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club to deliver their very best when they travelled to compete in Diss in a team of sixteen ages ranged from seven to eleven.

For some it was their first experience of competition.

Nerves faded quickly right from the first event when Reuben Seaman of Aylsham got Vikings off to the perfect start by winning gold in the 100m individual medley in 1:49.0. His elder sister Esme, immediately followed with another Viking gold over the same event finishing the course in 1:35.73. The decisive element of her swim was her butterfly as she breathed every five strokes which pulled her to the front after the first leg of the event.

A technique which she repeated twice more when she gained two more gold medals for the stroke; 25m in 21.31 and 50m in 47.72 respectively. Reuben, meanwhile was busy again with two more gold medals; the 25m freestyle (18.47) and the 50m freestyle (44.19) respectively.

Debutants Evie Bates, Bebe King and Razvan Platton all won a gold medal. Evie had a close race in her age group when she touched first in 0:17.31 in winning the 25m freestyle by just three, one hundredth of a second from Elizabeth Ferrier of Diss Otters. Evie, from Sheringham, went on to win bronze in the 50m event in 0:39.76 Bebe's 50m backstroke was also close when the eleven-year-old from North Walsham touched the wall first in 0:46.97 from Great Yarmouth's Jessica Hurren's 0:47.19. There was a double delight for Vikings when Lily Dear captured the bronze in 0:52.82. in the same event.

Razvan - who makes a round trip of twenty eight miles to train at the Victory pool in North Walsham - won gold in the corresponding boys’ event in 51.51 to add to his bronze medal he achieved in the 50m freestyle in 0.43.67.

Bailee Beighton achieved a hat-trick of silver medals.
