Sheringham Community Support Group becomes part of the Good Neighbour Network

Sheringham Community Support (SCS) held its first AGM on 29th September. Much of the event was about thanking the Street Volunteers who have worked hard to support the community and vulnerable people in their neighbourhood.

Liz Withington, elected as the SCS Lead commented that “With around 80 Street Volunteers the impact across the town in preventing people going into crisis and supporting them to be independent is huge.”

The meeting also heard from people who have been helped by the service and gone on to become volunteers for SCS themselves. Volunteer Co-ordinator, Paula Prince said that “Volunteers have found that they have benefitted from feeling more connected to their neighbours and have a sense of purpose through helping people “

The event also celebrated SCS becoming an independent organisation. Tracey Allen from Community Action Norfolk was on hand to acknowledge the good work of SCS and welcome the group into the Good Neighbour Network. Continued on page 4...

SCS Deputy Lead, Sue Brisbane, commented that ‘working with CAN means that both volunteers and those using the service can be reassured that SCS continues with appropriate safeguarding and monitoring in place.“

Sheringham and Cromer Lions Club are back with face-to-face monthly meetings and fund raising as before.

Hazel Beazley expressed her thanks to Sheringham Town Council for their continued support for SCS and the grant funding which will be used to cover set-up and ongoing costs.

We are few in number but big hearted and hope more like-minded people will wish to join us in our efforts to help local needy people and organisations.

SCS continues to provide support across the community including shopping, collecting medication, posting letters, simple tasks, befriending and accessing other support when needed. SCS would also like to sign up more volunteers and members to their Steering Group. Our glasses collections in Holt, Sheringham, Cromer and North Walsham are producing large numbers to help poor people in the Third World countries with their sight problems.

We managed the car park at Mannington Hall on Sunday 4th September and raised over £200 in a Tombola for worthy local causes.

The Strand Club

This is an annual event at Mannington Hall and is organised by one charity, who provide food, drink, fun and entertainment.

24 Members gathered for our ‘cream tea’ provided once again by The Old Rock Shop Bistro’. Our chairman, Jackie had done her research and told us the gruesome tale of Burke and Hare, the body snatchers, who committed their heinous crimes in the early 1800s in Edinburgh. After Burke was hanged in 1829 his body was publicly dissected by Prof. Alexander Monro. A pocket book made from his skin can be found displayed at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. These diabolical incidences did not, however affect our members appetites as they devoured their scones, jam and cream in no time.

Hospice Ethiopia were the organising charity this year and they raised over £9,000 in just six hours. Well done to them, maybe next year you would like to attend. It is a great Fun Day.

We meet at Beacon Farm, Trimingham and if anyone would like to join us on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm for a cuppa and a chat about what we do you would be most welcome.

Our next meeting will be on November 10th when a member of Norfolk Accident Rescue Service (NARS) will be coming to tell us about some of the work they do in our area. There will be a small charge on the door of £3 for visitors and £2 for members

A Note from the editor

It is said that over 50% of older people in the UK say that the television is their main source of company

November already... really?! The clocks have gone back and I suppose we are on the run-up to Christmas.

Here at the Age Concern North Norfolk day centre, we do not have time for the television as we are too busy with activities and enjoying our time together.

With talk of shortages of this and that, let alone rising winter fuel bills, you could be forgiven for thinking we are in for a bleak winter. But wait a minute, maybe it’s time to have a bit of a reset and think about those simple pleasures we enjoyed before everything got so complicated.

Over the past couple of months, we have done biscuit decorating, flower arranging, making lavender bags, seated exercises and music and singing. In addition there are quizzes, word searches, games and puzzles with the aim of stimulating all the senses throughout the day. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy has proved very beneficial for people with cognitive deficits as it can engage people in very simple and straightforward ways and is effective when a variety of sensory stimuli are combined within the activity.

Making the Christmas cake and puddings in November to be fed and matured for the big day. Making decorations with the children (and memories at the same time). Crisp walks wrapped up in scarves and gloves and then home to a mug of hot chocolate. Who needs the latest toy or gadget? If Covid has taught us anything, it is to look at what really matters to us and our loved ones and that getting back to basics is not such a bad thing.

So, get planning those homemade treats for Christmas, make some presents for loved ones instead of chasing the latest must-have, make some memories – they last longer than anything you can buy.

Whatever you are planning, enjoy your November magazine.

Exercise to music with scarves was a physical activity structured by a trained leader to enable all participants to move different parts of their body to music as they were able to safely. The light-weight scarves contributed positively as movement was required to wave them around so that people moved their limbs more than normal. Watching others also impacted on their enjoyment and motivation and there was scope to discuss the different colours. People living with dementia are more likely to achieve their potential by doing rather than by sitting passively and watching.

Popular ‘Launch a Memory’ lifeboat to carry a further 5,000 names

A new all-weather RNLI lifeboat to be based at Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk, will carry the names of a further 5,000 people, following record take-up of the original 10,000 names.

The Shannon class lifeboat Duke of Edinburgh, currently being built at the RNLI’s All-Weather Lifeboat Centre, is the third to be part of the charity’s ‘Launch a Memory’ fundraising campaign and the first to be based in England.

Back in June, members of the public were offered the opportunity to commemorate a loved one by making a donation online and submitting the name of someone they wanted to remember. Each name will` be featured within the lifeboat’s letters and numbers, or ‘decal’, ‘RNLI 13-46’, displayed on the vessel’s hull.

In just four months, more than 10,000 people have pledged their loved ones’ names, prompting the RNLI to open up COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMUNITY SERVICE space to take the total to 15,000. A second decal will be placed on the lifeboat’s ‘wheelhouse’ – the cabin which sits at the top of the Providing Providing p peace eace of of m mind ind a att tthe push button; he p ush of of a b utton; vessel.

The £2.5m Shannon class is the fastest all-weather lifeboat in the RNLI fleet. It was funded in part through an appeal in the local Wells community, and by the Civil Service charity The Lifeboat Fund. The new boat will be housed in a brand-new boathouse, currently under construction next to Beach Road and due for completion in time for the Shannon’s scheduled arrival in late 2022.

‘RNLI lifeboat crews are busier than ever. The ‘Launch a Memory’ campaign, while a fundraiser for the charity, is also a way for us to say thank you to those people who support the lifeboat service, and our volunteer lifeboat crews. It’s humbling to think that when our new Shannon lifeboat arrives, we’ll carry with us the names of 15,000 loved ones every time we launch.’

There are three ways people can get the name of a loved one on the Launch a Memory lifeboat. She is putting on weight and loves a fuss but will need her nails clipped when she goes to the vets to be vaccinated.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Stephanie gets many enquiries from people with cats needing to come into care and, although we would love to be able to help straight away there is often a delay before we can take them in as we have to wait for a cat pen to become free. Fortunately, most do not have to wait too long, and she always gives priority to those that have the most need. By adhering to Cats Protection guidelines and not mixing cats from different households, we have never experienced any cross infections in the 21+ years the branch has been in existence.

Fortunately, when we received a call recently from the gentleman who cares for the cats on the industrial estate, advising he had found 4 kittens, a pen had just become vacant with Caroline, and we were able to take them. As they were only about 5 weeks old it was important to get them in straight away and, if necessary, we would have appealed to Lesley to allow us to use another of her pens. All four kittens are now in their new homes and enjoying life with their new families.

Although we show a few of our cats on our website most are not shown there for many reasons. We do get some enquiries from people looking for a cat or kitten via our website, although most people contact Stephanie direct on the cat phone. She will ask them lots of questions to enable her to advise which cats or kittens in care would be suitable for their lifestyle and give them contact details for the fosterer caring for them. Before being available for adoption they will have been given a clean bill of health by our vets, been neutered (if appropriate), vaccinated (including for FELV) and microchipped. When homing kittens too young to be neutered we will pay for this to be done by one of the veterinary surgeries we use. We also pay for the second vaccination when cats and kittens leave before this is due.

Hedgehog Haven

It's the start of the season for Autumn juveniles, this little one, Hannah, was found in a garden in North Walsham. She had fallen onto a patio and was struggling to get out. If possible, please put out some wild hedgehog food to help build them up for the winter along with a shallow dish of water. Hedgehogs are meat eaters, and unlike African Pigmy ones do not eat fruit. We are hoping to be at NW Garden Centre on Saturday 20th November, come along and say hello.

Five Hospital Governors Sought to Represent Patients Across Norfolk

People living in Norfolk will have the opportunity to put their name forward as a governor at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as five public governors reach the end of their three-year term. The vacancies are in Broadland, North Norfolk, King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, plus two posts in Breckland.

The responsibilities of governors include supporting the recruitment of new members, attending Council of Governor meetings and engaging with the Board of Directors on a range of issues. Governors serve a term of three years after which they can be re-elected.

Why you should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney this November

authority is known as an ‘attorney’. They can manage your finances or make decisions relating to your health and welfare. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney:

Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your money and property, including managing bank or building society accounts, paying bills, collecting a pension and if necessary, selling your home. Once registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, it can be used immediately, or held in readiness until required.

Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney: This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your daily routine, medical care, moving into a care home and lifesustaining medical treatment. It can only be used if you are unable to make your own decisions.

In relation to the cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney, this will depend on whether you wish to have both a Lasting Power of Attorney (Property and Financial Affairs) and/or a Lasting Power of Attorney (Health and Welfare) prepared and registered.

What happens if you don't make a Lasting Power of Attorney? • No one has legal authority to act on your behalf – your spouse and children have no automatic rights to make decisions on your behalf; • Someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order; • This can be costly, time consuming and you may not end up being assisted by the person you would have chosen yourself.

Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community (SDFC)

As is true for many VSE organisations SDFC has had to play a very different role during COVID. Below is an account of the activities that the group has undertaken during the period of the pandemic. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the SDFC volunteers who have done so much for those living with dementia within our community. We would also like to thank the other organisations in the Town who have also supported those living with dementia and made the effort to adapt services accordingly.

It was a sad time for us as an organisation and we would also like to take a moment to remember those from the SDFC family who we lost during this time and although we able to stand on roadsides we were not able to say our fondest farewells to people who SDFC had become very close too during our time supporting them and their families. We will miss you and you all continue to be in our thoughts.

SDFC Actions during COVID 1. SDFC supported the development of Sheringham Community Support. The service had a significant impact on the wellbeing of the community and volunteers and on improving community connectivity, reducing isolation and growing community resilience. SDFC are pleased that SCS continues to provide that service as we move beyond the crisis.

2. All the SDFC Steering Group and volunteers were SCS Volunteers as well. This enabled SCS to allocate a dementia aware volunteer to residents who were living with or suspected to be living with dementia. – proved hugely beneficial to those who were being helped and also helped in identifying members of the community who were living with dementia, who were often alone and had no previous contact with dementia services or diagnosis.

3. With close links to the PPG SDFC volunteers also were heavily involved in supporting the volunteers organising a huge vaccination programme at the local surgery. Through Janet Eastwood the Chair of the PPG, who is also a lead on SDFC and did an amazing job with her team of volunteers

SDFC has also led on and is collaborating with a project which is developing called Healthier Sheringham which is about bringing all the agencies and voluntary partners together to work collaboratively, avoid duplication of services/ activities/ identify gaps and strengths and build community resilience by providing the support the community needs and making it accessible to the community from within the community. 5. SDFC Leads have also supported NNDC who have been building a new leisure complex to consider the needs of those living with dementia.

6. Families and individuals have come to SDFC during this time for support and advice and although no face-to-face meetings have been able to take place or support groups to run online meetings have taken place and support via the phone has been given to all who have requested it.

7. SDFC have maintained their FB page throughout offering advice re living with dementia, activities which are available and ensuring those with dementia were aware of local delivery services, SCS support and other agencies such as Age Concern NN providing Meals on Heels etc and accessing up to date information about government guidance.

Priorities for the town are to continue to: • Create another 500 dementia friends in the next 12 months- will this be you?

• Focus support on providing Dementia Awareness sessions for local businesses and community groups. This will include dementia awareness sessions for staff, volunteers and members as well as environmental audits of the building to help make life across Sheringham as dementia accessible as possible.

On Tuesday 5 October, we met for lunch at the Links Hotel in West Runton. The lunch was excellent, and it was refreshing to meet once again; things seem to be getting back to normal! Kelling Probus Club held its October lunch meeting at The Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on Thursday 21st October. Seventeen members were welcomed by chairman Gary Mitchell, a delicious lunch was served and enjoyed by all. Gary then welcomed new member Charles Cargill and gave a report on members unable to attend due to illness and caring for partners. He then welcomed Member Jack Broughton OBE. who gave a fascinating talk of his meetings with the Royal family. During his career in the RAF. Jack rose through the ranks during the post war period to become an Air Commodore. he outlined his various jobs in the service including the time during the Cold War when tensions were high. Jack then told us of his various encounters with The Queen, Prince Philip and various other Royals and then his work when he left the RAF with the RAF Association where he led teams of volunteers caring for ex-servicemen. He has still strong connections with this organisation and has worked hard for many years to look after the welfare of its members. Jack was thanked by Gary Mitchell for a wonderful talk. Beanstalk Panto Schools Streaming Set to Grow Even Bigger again this year.

Last winter 252,000 primary school pupils enjoyed the fairy tale action from the Rapunzel panto jointly staged at Sheringham Little Theatre and its partner venue St George’s Theatre in Great Yarmouth.

They dressed up and sang along to the songs they had rehearsed beforehand through a link with the Norfolk Music Hub which promotes music-making among young people.

EAAA’s 24/7 service is saving lives all over the region

Since the launch of EAAA’s 24/7 service by air and road on 30 June and up until 7am on Monday 18 October, the charity’s crews have been tasked 307 times between 7pm and 7am, averaging nearly three missions a night. During this time, 87 of the taskings  were by helicopter and 220 by rapid response vehicle.

As the nights draw in and the seasons change, the EAAA teams will be operating even more during the hours of darkness, to provide enhanced critical care, by air or by road, to people living across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire.

EAAA has been providing 24/7 care from both its bases in Norwich and Cambridge by rapid response vehicle for the last 18 months but began flying around-the-clock for the first time on 30 June this year, extending the night-time helicopter emergency medical service coverage in the region from its previous finishing time at 1:30am to complete coverage through to 7am. This change saw EAAA become the first air ambulance in the East of England to become 24/7 by both air and by road.

As a result of the increased operational hours,

the crews have been able to cover a much wider area in East Anglia at night, helping more patients than was previously possible. By air, the crews have been tasked to Peterborough, across North Norfolk, into the depths of South Suffolk and as far southwest as Harpenden in Hertfordshire, to a mixture of emergencies including accidental injuries, cardiac arrests, road traffic collisions, medical emergencies, self-harm incidents and assaults.

Matthew Jones, CEO of EAAA, said: “We’re just over three months into providing a fully 24/7 service for the region and we’re really pleased to see that our teams are already making a big difference to people all over East Anglia and beyond. We can see that we are being tasked over a much wider area at night than ever before, showing that we’re taking our enhanced critical care skills to those patients most in need of our help.

“Moving towards providing a 24/7 service has taken us the best part of four years and included raising an extra million pounds a year to fund this change, extending to 24/7 operations by rapid response vehicle first and expanding and renovating the charity’s HQ in Norwich, to adequately house a 24/7 service by air and by road. We are incredibly pleased to

now be able to offer the same level of service, no matter what the time of day or night, to our patients and their families and this is only possible thanks to our incredible supporters.”

To facilitate the additional night flying at Norwich Airport also required upgrading the control system for the runway lights, costing around £60,000 which was kindly funded by the HELP Appeal. This drastically helps to reduce light pollution and saves energy by allowing the EAAA pilots to turn the lights on remotely via the aircraft VHF radio as they depart or approach the airport.

EAAA needs to raise £15 million a year to deliver and develop its life-saving service and is grateful to all of its supporters for the essential donations which keep the charity flying and have made a 24/7 service by air a reality for the people of East Anglia.

Anaesthetising Pets At Toll Barn Vets we are honoured to be trusted with loved family pets when they need surgical procedures both in routine and life-threatening situations. When a pet needs an anaesthetic this is understandably a very worrying time for both pet and owner, especially when it is an emergency or a life threatening situation, and we know that understanding what is happening to your pet is really important.

Every veterinary practice is different and has different protocols and procedures for anaesthetics but at Toll Barn Vets we work to a well-established procedure. So what exactly do we consider when your pet needs an anaesthetic?

Firstly we consider the species as many different injectable and gaseous anaesthetic drugs exist. Importantly, different species (and sometimes even different breeds within the same species) respond differently to the each drug and therefore species and breed play an important role in our choice of the right drugs to use to keep your pets as safe as possible. Seeing so many different species and breeds means we have a wide choice available to us, including Sevoflurane, a special gas anaesthetic often used in human paediatric surgery so we are able to choose the very best option for your pet.

Secondly, we perform a detailed pre-anaesthetic check. During this we check heart rate, temperature and breathing rate. We also check

for underlying health issues that might affect the anaesthetic choice. Much like in human hospitals we use this information to produce an ASA Score (an objective measure of the patient’s health and fitness for surgery). This helps us to predict and avoid, or specifically manage, any potential complications during or after the anaesthetic.

Next, our team consider the patients stress levels. Our purpose built separate dog, cat and exotic pet hospital wards along with our calming diffusers and music systems, aim to keep pets calm but by assessing stress or anxiety levels in advance we can make sure pets receive appropriate pre-medication to keep them nice and calm, and avoid any changes that might impact the anaesthetic. When booking admission appointments, we also try to book a later appointment for particularly nervous or anxious pets as this reduces their waiting time.

What about the anaesthetic itself? We hope there is never an anaesthetic complication but we also know it is incredibly important to be prepared just in case. Our Team run regular in house “Anaesthetic Emergency Simulations” to make sure that we are all ready to leap into action should the need arise. One of the key things in an emergency is being able to administer medication into a vein quickly which is why all our patients undergoing anaesthesia have intravenous catheters fitted. This also helps us to administer intravenous fluids to help keep their blood pressure stable. Our team use a full range of specialised multiparameter machines

which accurately measure blood pressure, oxygen and carbon dioxide saturations, temperature, ECG, heart rate, breathing rate and breathing efficiency on patients ranging from the tiniest lizard or bird up to the largest dogs. Of course, all this monitoring is only as good as the person using the equipment! We are very proud to only use qualified veterinary nurses rather than lay staff for all our anaesthetics, and this helps us detect and act on any changes that may occur, helping us to keep your pet as safe as possible.

Following the anaesthetic, patients are recovered in our heated hospital wards where a qualified hospital nurse makes sure they are comfortable by performing regular “pain scores”, as well as making sure they have as many home comforts as possible to make their stay comfortable.

As winter comes around, it is time to look out those warming recipes which just hit the spot on a cold day. This one is just the ticket and won’t break the bank. You can jazz it up with any left over veg, mix it up with different cheeses (substituting some of the cheddar with blue cheese makes a change) and any leftovers are good cold the next day. If you want to save a bit of time you can use readymade pastry. Good served with plenty of fresh veg or salad. INGREDIENTS For the Pastry 125 g (4oz) plain flour

For the Filling 500g potatoes 125g spring onions 1 leek 2 tablespoon vegetable / sunflower oil 25g butter 3 tablespoon double cream 150g mature cheddar cheese 15g parsley chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper

METHOD To make the pastry, place the flours, and chilled butter into a good-sized bowl. Rub the butter into the flours until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Make a well in the centre of the breadcrumbs and add the beaten egg. Mix to a dough, adding a little cold water or milk to fully bring the mixture together if required. Wrap the pastry and chill for at least 30 minutes. Wash the potatoes and cut into chunks about 2cm (1in) cubed. Steam until tender about 15 – 20 minutes. Whilst the potatoes are cooking prepare the other ingredients. Cut the spring onions into 1 cm (½in) chunks. Wash the leek thoroughly, cut into 2cm (1in) rounds. Chop the parsley. Grate the cheese. Once the potatoes are cooked through, heat the oil in a large frying pan and set over a medium heat. Add the leek and cook gently until softened. Add the spring onions and cook for a further 2 or 3 minutes, stirring regularly. Add the butter and allow it to melt into the vegetables. Then stir in the cooked potatoes. Add the double cream and 3/4 of the cheese, stir again. Keep stirring until the cheese melts and the double cream to start to thicken. Add the parsley. Season to taste. Turn off the heat and set aside to cool. Preheat the oven to 220°C (200°C fan)/425°F/gas mark 7. Roll the pastry into a circle about 5mm (¼in) thick and large enough to line an 8-9-inch, deep pie dish. Grease the pie dish with a little butter. Use the rolling pin to gently lift the pastry and lay it gently over the pie dish. Press the pastry into the pie dish, avoid stretching it. Trim away the excess from the rim. Once the filling is completely cool spoon it into the lined pie dish. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top of the fillingBake for 20 – 25 minutes until the pastry is cooked through and the cheese is starting to brown.

SiS ANGEL PACKS Angel Pack Initiative

With Christmas approaching and all of us tightening our belts, one idea for presents with a personal touch is to make something. This scores on two counts, it is cheaper than paying for commercial products and all the fancy packaging and people appreciate the effort of something made especially for them, particularly if children have been involved too.

The Angel Pack at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Sheringham proved invaluable recently when a member of Sheringham Folk Dance Club fell and broke her leg.

Calling for an ambulance, club members were initially told there would be a wait of about 14 hours. Fortunately, the response was cut to 5 hours and the wonderful, hard pressed ambulance crew looked after her well, taking her to the N&N where she was well cared for by dedicated NHS staff.

This recipe is easy but will require a sugar thermometer and caution, as boiling sugar is very hot and sticky. Let children observe the cooking but take charge of packaging and decorating.

Ingredients 800g caster sugar 75g unsalted butter, cubed 5ml vanilla extract

Folk Dance Club members, so impressed with the usefulness of the Angel Pack, have donated £25 to the Initiative. Along with a recent donation from Carnival funds, the money will be used to replace swabs and wet wipes in every Angel Pack distributed throughout Sheringham. These items must be replaced at the expiration of their two-to-three-year shelf life. Anyone with an Angel Pack on their premises is asked to check for out of date contents and urged to call for replacements.

250ml full fat milk 350g dark chocolate

Method Grease a 20x30 tin and line with baking parchment and prepare a washing up bowl of ice-cold water.

Put the sugar, milk and butter in a heavy saucepan and melt together over a moderate heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved. Bring the mixture to the boil and without stirring bring to a slow, rolling boil for 10 minutes until (using a sugar thermometer) it reaches 114C (soft ball stage).

In recent weeks use of Angel Packs have been in high demand while accident victims await the long arrival of an ambulance.

Stir in the chocolate and immediately place the bottom of the saucepan in the cold water, without getting water in the pan. Stir in the vanilla extract, beat until smooth with a wooden spoon for 6-8 minutes, then pour the mixture into the prepared tin. Leave until cool and completely set then lift out of the tin on the paper onto a chopping board. Cut into 2cm squares and serve. If giving as a gift, put into gift bags or screw top jar and tie tightly with decorative ribbon. Jo – editor

Managing financial affairs under a lasting power of attorney by Sudan Dayment, Associate Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

Making a lasting power of attorney (also known as an LPA) for your finances is an important part of lifetime planning. An LPA should be set up well in advance of when it might be needed, although it can be difficult to predict when that might be. If in the future you have an accident or illness, like dementia, an LPA enables other people (your attorneys) to help make decisions on your behalf.

In addition to managing bank accounts and selling property, an LPA clarifies your wishes on a wide range of financial decisions, including if you have a business or complex investments.

Funds You may have investments in certain funds which require your express consent or discretionary management funds to be set up before your attorneys can be authorised to deal with them.

Overseas assets If you hold overseas assets, an LPA made in England and Wales may not be recognised by the jurisdiction in which those assets are held. You will need legal advice for each jurisdiction to ensure your attorneys can act on your behalf in the different territories.

Gifts Attorneys can make small gifts in limited circumstances on your behalf, but you may authorise them to make larger or more regular gifts. For example, you may wish to make such gifts for tax planning purposes, or because you would like to provide financial assistance for family members who need extra support. Whatever the reason, you will need to include a specific authority to allow such gifts to be made.

Dependants You may be concerned about a family member or another dependant who relies upon you financially, especially if they are unable to manage their own finances.

Business assets If you have any interest in a business, you should ensure that the appointed attorneys have the necessary insight and business acumen to continue to run things smoothly. If you wish to appoint separate attorneys for your business decisions, you will need to make two separate financial lasting powers of attorney, one for your personal financial decisions and one for your business decisions.

Avoiding common mistakes Many people choose to appoint the friends or family closest to them without considering

whether they are suitable for the role. If they are not good with their own money, think carefully about trusting them with yours. There may also be times where your interests could conflict with theirs.

Careful considerations • You can decide when your LPA comes into force. • Your attorneys must always act in your best interests. • You may need to include specific instructions to extend your attorneys’ powers. • You should appoint more than one attorney or replacement attorneys who would step in if your first choice of attorney can no longer act for you.

Additional Spaces for Go Digital Funded by C-Care and North Norfolk District Council

Launched on 22 September 2021, the project supports micro, small and medium-sized businesses to develop digital technology tools through funding and one to one support and continues a successful pilot conducted in early 2021.

Go Digital is delivered by Norfolk County Council, in partnership with local district authorities, to help businesses based in the county identify digital opportunities. It will provide expert one-to-one consultancy and the ability to apply for grants of up to £500.

Digital opportunities could include how to sell products and services online, reach new customers using social media, build customer databases, develop new or existing websites and attract new visitors, or how to work out the best homeworking options for teams.

Successful Go Digital applicants will be assigned an experienced

business advisor who will conduct a ‘digital audit’ and provide a comprehensive report to identify digital opportunities. The advisor will help the business put together an action plan and then businesses will have the opportunity to apply for a grant of up to £500 to help them deliver projects using this plan.

Send a Smile with Santa appeal launched for 2021

The annual appeal to give every patient at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital a gift on Christmas Day has been launched.

Each year, the N&N Hospitals Charity’s Send a Smile with Santa appeal collects more than 1,000 presents kindly donated by the members of the public and businesses across Norfolk. These are then distributed to patients, both young and old, who will spend Christmas in hospital and are unable to celebrate at home with their families.

This year, the charity is asking people who would like to give a present to a patient, to either purchase an item from the list below and drop it off at the hospital or make a small donation online at our website which could then be used by the charity to purchase a gift.

All gifts must be new and unwrapped and can be dropped off from now until 5 December at the hospital’s West Inpatients Reception Desk which is open 24/7 or at the Charity Hub East Atrium Monday to Friday 9-4pm.

NCI Cromer Seeks Volunteers

National Coastwatch Institution (NCI Cromer) is currently seeking to recruit additional volunteers for its Cromer watch station overlooking both East Runton and Cromer beaches. We are a friendly team, from all walks of life, and we all feel good about keeping a watchful eye open for the safety of our local beaches, waters, people and wildlife!

volunteers reach the high standard expected by the NCI and HM Coastguard. Regular assessments take place at all stations and retraining programmes are held to maintain standards and keep watchkeepers up to date with the latest legislation or improved operational procedures.

Watchkeepers are the eyes and ears along the coast, keeping a visual watch, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They remain vigilant at all times. Surveillance work is mainly routine but watchkeepers are trained to act in an emergency, report to the MCA and, if required, co-ordinate with the search and rescue services.

Full training is given, and no previous maritime experience is necessary.

Our volunteers give 3 hours per week (or more if you so choose) and we only operate during daylight hours, so no night-time hours.

In 1994 when two fishermen lost their lives off the Cornish coast near a recently closed Coastguard lookout, local people decided to open and restore the visual watch. When the first station was opened at Bass Point on the Lizard, NCI was born. Today 57 stations keep a visual watch around the coastline of England and Wales, with more in the pipeline.

High technology and sophisticated systems such as radar and telecommunications have vastly improved safety at sea, but there is no substitute for a watchful pair of eyes. Accidents do happen and a computer or technology cannot spot a distress flare, an overturned boat, a yacht with problems, a water sports enthusiast in difficulty, or children or adults in trouble, or possible pollution incidents. That is why our lookouts and watchkeepers are an important service provider to all those who use our coastal waters, footpaths and coastline.

Each station is manned by a team of fully trained and dedicated volunteers who keep a daylight watch up to 365 days a year. Stations are equipped with telescopes, radar, telephone and weather instrumentation as well as up to date charts. Close contact with the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) aims to promote stations to Declared Facility Status in order to become an integral part of the National Search and Rescue Structure.

Love for Leo

Exactly seven years ago, ‘Love for Leo’ was founded by partners Moss Taylor and Robina Churchyard. Our aim is to raise funds for any children living in Norfolk & Suffolk with cerebral palsy. This was as a direct result of seeing appeals for help in the local papers, and the fact that one of Moss’s grandsons, Leo, was severely affected.

Cerebral palsy is often due to problems at birth and results in varying degrees of lifelong physical disability. Unfortunately, not all the expensive equipment needed to improve the quality of life of these children is available through the National Health Service, nor are some of the surgical treatments and other therapies, and this is where Love for Leo is able to make a contribution towards these costs.

While Robina and Moss have personally raised over £10,000, our fund has passed the £36,000 mark since 2014, which has only been possible by very many generous

donations from a large number of friends, as well as the Lights Up show at the Little Theatre, Sheringham Masonic Lodge, the Crown quizzes and Tesco’s Bags of Help blue token scheme.

We were also the beneficiary of the Captains’ chosen charity at Sheringham Golf Club in 2018/19 and received the magnificent sum of over £6,000. One of the most successful and enjoyable fundraising events was the Leo Who Dun It at The Muckleburgh Collection, written and directed by David and Audrey Williams. Over the years our tombola at the 40s Weekend in Sheringham has raised almost £2,000 but as a result of Covid-19, it has not taken place for two years, but requests for financial help for children with cerebral palsy still keep coming in.

During the last seven years, Love for Leo has given financial support to 43 children with cerebral palsy and to NANSA (Norfolk & Norwich Scope Association) for their work with disabled children, totalling over £33,000.

Local charities to benefit from Artisan Fair!

The Two Rivers’ Artists are a group of 7 talented people who live between the rivers Ant and Bure on the Broads.

The group are renowned for their traditional skills and handcrafted work.

Each November, the group holds a Festive Fair in Neatishead, and invite two local charities to join them. This year they’ll also be joined by five hand-picked, exceptional Norfolk artisans.

Last year due to covid, it was a virtual event, and the artists were delighted to achieve 2,500 website hits which brought many sales. Now, lockdown has led to new designs, new ideas and new inspiration from this talented group, many of who have gone in new directions and

added new designs.

This year’s event, to be held on Saturday November 20th, at the Neatishead New Victory Hall, will see the Nancy Oldfield Trust join them. The Trust are based in Neatishead and provide opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged people, families and carers, to enjoy a boating experience under motor, sail or paddle on the Broads.

In 1981 Stuart Meakin was one of a number of people who got together and formed the group. Stuart is still very active as group treasurer and leads some of the longer Sunday walks. Stuart gave a presentation of the history of the group which although it does not have as many members as in the past, is still going strong and looking to grow; currently there are 167 members with 20 having joined this year.

individuals have made significant contributions to the group. Jasmine Winter has been Walks Secretary and coordinates and collates the walks programme in a booklet three times a year that detail the fortnightly walks that is sent to members.

Mike and Jane Holmes have, over a similar timescale, occupied various roles on the committee and are currently Group Secretary and Membership Secretary as well as having led over 125 walks. They were presented with Ramblers Certificates of Achievement by Richard May.

Graham Kinch Group Chairman said “Sheringham Ramblers are looking forward to the coming years and leading walks over our wonderful local countryside and we welcome new walkers”.

Sheringham Ramblers has fortnightly walks that are within a 10-mile radius with shorter walks of 4 to 6 miles on Wednesdays and longer walks on Sundays of 5 to 10 miles. Details of the walks can be found by searching “Sheringham and District Ramblers” on a website and walkers are welcome to join us for three walks before joining The Ramblers.

Marathon Success for Local MP

A local MP has completed the London Marathon today, raising over £26,000 for charity in the process.

Duncan Baker, MP for North Norfolk, crossed the finish line in 4 hours, 16 minutes, and 30 seconds, marking the end of many months of training and fundraising.

“I’m absolutely delighted not only to finish my first marathon, but to have hit – and gone past – our fundraising target. We have so many amazing charities in North Norfolk, doing so much for our local communities and it’s great to be able to support their work. I’m so grateful to everyone who has donated, and so generously, to be able to help 26 local charities nominated by the public.”
