Sheringham Horticultural Society Celebrates 100 Years
Sheringham Horticultural Society (SHS) celebrated the centenary of its affiliation to The Royal Horticultural Society on Thursday 20th October. Members gathered at St. Joseph’s Church Hall and enjoyed an evening of quizzing and conversation, reminiscing about members past and present.
A collection of material from the Society archive was on display, put together by Bob Wilkinson, showing past talks from celebrity gardeners, photos of Society Summer Shows and even a satellite photo of the Society’s allotments from Google Earth. Former SHS Chairman Clive Mitchell and his wife Margaret (pictured) cut a celebration cake to mark the centenary of the Society.

Sheringham Horticultural Society Celebrates 100 Years
St Andrew’s Methodist Church
The theme of the St. Andrew`s Methodist Church`s recent Harvest Flower Festival was `Giving Thanks for Harvest` and arrangements included `The Fruits of Creation`, `Daily Bread`, `From Greenhouse and Garden`, `Harvest of the Sea`, `The Diary of a Church Mouse` (the John Betjeman poem), `All good gifts around us` and verses from other well-known harvest hymns.
continued from Front Page Members brought a splendid selection of cakes, worthy of Bake Off, to be enjoyed with copious amount of tea and coffee supplied by Anne Mann and Eileen Hatton. There was also a raffle raising £55 for the Society.
One arrangement, on the theme of `Sharing Harvest`, included an empty supermarket trolley and visitors were invited to bring their harvest gifts of fresh or tinned/packet goods and place them in it. By the end of the Festival, we were delighted that the trolley was filled and some baskets too. These were then given to the Food Bank and the fresh produce distributed and used at our weekly Do Drop In Community Cafe. As well as enjoying the floral arrangements visitors to the festival enjoyed browsing around stalls of plants, gifts and cards, books and Traidcraft stall, and then enjoying light refreshments in the cafeteria.
The Festival finished on Sunday afternoon with a Circuit Harvest Songs of Praise service, and we were pleased that Rev. Julian Pursehouse, the Chair of the East Anglia District or the Methodist Church joined us for the service, along with our Circuit ministers, who shared with us harvest and seasonal poems interspersed with harvest hymns.

SHS is always looking for new members to join their friendly Society, all are welcome, both experienced gardeners and newcomers to gardening. We also have a waiting list for allotment tenancies for those who would like to ‘grow their own’. If you are interested in joining SHS please get in touch via our email: sheringhamhorticultural@yahoo.com
We express our very grateful thanks to everyone who helped with the event, and to all the visitors who came. The total raised was £1,369.74, for church funds from which a donation will be given to `All We Can` the Methodist Church`s charity for relief and development overseas."

We often hear about the ‘hidden carers’, usually unpaid members of families supplementing or even taking on the full care of older people in order for them to remain living at home. Statistics show that 2/3 older people over the age of 65 have a partner living with them and this reduces to 1/3 when over 85 years. It is getting harder for older people especially to obtain the right amount of care to meet their needs for personal support but also to avoid loneliness and isolation. Age Concern North Norfolk has a day centre open 4 days per week but we are running below the numbers we could actually cater for. We are also providing over 550 meals per month to people who attend the day care or the Lunch club but also to people living in their own homes between Cromer and Holt. We have a great capacity and willingness to support as many people as possible this Chris winter to get through what is going to be a difficult time for us all. However, although we have qualified care staff, we still need the support of our volunteers to supplement our services in the day centre but particularly with the delivery of meals.
four chancellors in his lifetime, and he is only four months old!’ It seems a day is a long time in politics, let alone a week. I suspect we have more upheaval to go through before things settle down to anything like it was before. Meanwhile, we are still seeing record inflation and fuel poverty, with many people worried about what the winter will bring. There are many organizations ready to lend a hand, these include help with food and stay warm schemes. A good source of information of what is available is on the NNDC website. Go to www.northnorfolk.gov.uk and select Cost of Living Help. Enjoy your November magazine. Jo – Editor.

Could we please give the biggest 'thank-you ever' to the wonderful people who attended the Macmillan Coffee Morning at the Copeman Centre, Briston on Friday September 30th - who supported us so well, and also to all those who volunteered to help on the day, made cakes, ran stalls, and gave freely of their cash, their time and their talent to make it such a success - and to the Copeman Centre committee, who let us have the hall completely free of charge for the day ....... and the result was a wonderful £1215 for the Macmillan fund! Thank you all - here's to next year! Kind regards from Mick and Carol

Holt & District Dementia Support
We have had a glorious summer but as winter approaches it becomes even more important to families living with dementia that they have somewhere to go for company, laughter and support and for those who are confined to their home, that someone from outside will come and provide similar company and stimulation while their carer has a break. Covid has dominated our lives, but dementia has remained as the daily reality throughout for many families and we continue to receive an increasing number of enquiries from both families and individuals seeking support. Holt & District Dementia Support has looked to meet that need through the provision of the Poppy Café every Monday and Tuesday morning plus Poppy PM on the 2nd and 4th Thursday afternoons of the month. Our Home Visiting service provides the same social support within the person’s own home and allows the carer some time to themselves. Our monthly support group for carers, Poppy Friends, provides an opportunity for carers to get to meet with others facing the same challenges, have a coffee and share experiences. These services are all provided by local people volunteering their time. The more volunteers we have, the more families we can help. If you

Autumn ‘Stream-Clean’
On October 8th the Sheringham Loke RiverCare Group met to resume the ‘stream cleans’ around Beeston and Beeston Back Commons. Four members, Julie, Dave, Mike and Janet joined the Hon. Warden Francis and spent a couple of hours clearing an assortment of rubbish, including plastic bottles, cans, wine bottles and assorted debris from the becks and surrounding grassland. Although the amount of rubbish was less than expected the team managed to fill six and a half large bin bags, which is still too much litter to be lying around, especially bottles which can be death traps to small mammals. With a final sweep of the layby the filled bags were left in a neat pile and our thanks go to the NNDC for arranging their collection later that day. The ‘stream cleans’ started 15 years ago and apart from a break during the two Covid years, have been run roughly every three to four months. If you would like to help with this community project and join the small but dedicated RiverCare team, please email Francis on hon.warden@btinternet.com for notification prior to the next meeting. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Three Times a Charm for Stage Direct
Stage Direct amateur drama group are about to perform their new play ‘The Female of the Species’ by Joanna Murry-Smith at Sheringham Little Theatre.
Following on from Stage Direct’s wonderful fundraising success for Sheringham Little Theatre earlier in June, with ‘One O’clock from the House’, they hope to continue their run of success with this, their third show this year at Sheringham Little Theatre, being performed on the 11th and 12th of November 2022. With new members joining their troupe, the audiences will get a chance to espy some new raw acting talent on stage.
‘Female of the Species’ was premiered in London’s West End in 2008. Joanna’s plays have been performed in Australia and worldwide. ‘Female Of the Species’ is a “deliciously wicked” play that "deftly” entices the viewer into the other realms of farce. Margot Mason, a pioneer of the 1970s Women's Liberation movement has won international adulation for her books on the subject but now, the aging author has hit writer's block. Struggling alone in her country house, she is surprised by a visitor, a student, idealist and daughter of one of Margo's most dedicated followers. Initially delighted, www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Fundamental Change in the Law Results in More Divorces
On 6 April 2022 the law surrounding divorces in England and Wales was changed radically. Before that a divorce could only take place based on one of five reasons and for an immediate divorce that could only be adultery or unreasonable behaviour.
This all changed in April. “No-fault” divorce came into operation in April. This enables a husband or a wife (or them jointly) to apply for their marriage to be brought to an end, but without having to give a reason. Under the old law it was often the case that behaviour was exaggerated to enable a divorce to take place, or marriages had to continue even where the spouses acknowledged that it was realistically over. No-fault divorce was intended to avoid arguments and animosity over an actual divorce, but the immediate result has been that, for the first three months following the new law coming into operation, substantially more divorces have been started than previously. It has been suggested that there was a period before the new law came into operation where divorces were not started and that has resulted in the increase following the April change. There was a concern when the new law was being discussed as to whether it would make divorces too easy; so time will tell as to whether the increased number of divorces being started will continue or whether the first quarter statistics just show that there was what has been described as “pent up demand”. What the new law does not do is to make dealing with finances or children any easier. However, it is hoped that taking away the animosity around an actual divorce itself will lead to a better attitude when dealing with fundamental long-term aspects such as finances and children are to be resolved. The emphasis with these areas remains on spouses and parents trying to reach agreement wherever possible. The Government has been trying to encourage mediation as an option giving “vouchers” to those willing to try mediation instead of more acrimonious and expensive Court Proceedings. Taking away arguments over whether a divorce should take place, and on what basis, will undoubtedly help in the correct tone being set between spouses that are splitting up and having a divorce, especially where children are concerned and involved.
The new procedure involves a divorce being applied for online through the Government Online Portal. What it does not do is to automatically give a process for dealing with financial arrangements arising from the divorce. This remains a crucial area. Likewise, the most important aspect of resolving any arguments over children may still need the involvement of a Court in resolving any disagreements between parents. It is to be hoped though that the new no-fault divorce law will help spouses and parents to work together more amicably and collaboratively. There is also the possibility under the new law of a joint application being made for a divorce whereas previously one spouse had to apply for a divorce against the other. Between April and June 2022 a total of 33,566 divorce applications were made in England and Wales. The majority were made under the new legislation and from a sole application, i.e. not joint. This is the highest level since the beginning of 2012. Over the coming months and years we will need to see whether the no-fault divorce results in continued higher numbers of divorces. Also whether the long-term intention of more amicable divorces filters through to what happens when couples split up.

Norfolk Open Studio Success for Sheringham Woodfields School
and mono-prints and portraits, all of which were created by the school's pupils and sta ff. The exhibits celebrated the traditions, locations, people &animals for which Norfolk is so well known. Sheringham Woodfields School is a purpose-built school for pupils with complex needs situated on the outskirts of Sheringham, where it shares a campus with Sheringham Academy and Sheringham Primary School. It offers exceptional facilities both within the school and in the outside play areas which are designed to assist pupils with complex needs and multi-sensory impairments to gain the best possible education. Recent developments, including the Fields Therapy Centre which was part of the Local Authority's SEND Transformation project, now enable the school to cater for 146 pupils from across Norfolk who are supported by 140 members of staff.
This year is the first time that Sheringham Woodfields School has participated in the Norfolk Open Studio art exhibition and Jake Millin, the teacher who organised the event, was very pleased that the school took part, saying: "The Open Studios was a success for the school. We were delighted to welcome many familiar faces back to the school as well as meeting new people who were keen to see the wide range of artwork on display in the Carol Fields Therapy Centre. The pupils not only enjoyed exhibiting their work, but also the opportunity to discuss the creative process with visitors. The positive feedback resulted in the exhibition remaining in place until the Autumn half term break, thus allowing more people to attend." He added: "Art is a fantastic way to express feelings and ideas and is utilised by the school, alongside an array of approaches, to ensure that the Sheringham Woodfields community has a voice with which to communicate." The artworks on display included paintings, charcoal drawings, sculptures
Chess Master Shares Expertise with Library Chess Group
Aylsham Library Chess Group (ALCG) is aimed at adults who are interested in playing chess in a relaxed, not overly competitive, environment. ALCG meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of most months - from 10.00 to around 12.00. North Walsham Library Chess Group (NWLCG) is aimed at all ages (including children and senior citizens) and all chess abilities. NWLCG meets on Friday afternoons from 4.00 to around 6.00. Both groups are free to attend. Recently, FM (FIDEFédération Internationale des Échecs Chess Master) Martin Walker visited ALCG to play a few games and to offer some tips
to players and those organising community chess groups. To find more about Martin Walker and his chess consultancy e-mail: martinwalker723@gmail.com or Mob: 07398-646119. To find out about other groups, please visit www.communitydirectory.norfolk.gov.uk or ask at your local library.
Jonathan Reeve (Aylsham Library Chess Group Organiser) said: “There seems to have been a recent resurgence of interest in chess. Serious players have the opportunity of joining Aylsham, Broadland and North Norfolk chess clubs or playing ‘on-line’. Thankfully, there are also local opportunities for
less-experienced players and those more interested in playing friendly ‘over the board’ games. Hopefully, a few more people will consider trying the Aylsham and North Walsham Library chess groups.”

Learn to Draw & Paint with Chloe
Chloe Hibberd is a professional pet portrait artist and has recently started leading art workshops in both Sheringham and Holt. Her focus is on creating incredibly lifelike animal art which exudes soul and character. She works in many different mediums including colour pencil, pastels, oils and acrylics and has a good following on social media. Teaching others the skills needed to create amazing portraits (or ‘pawtraits’ as she calls them) has been an enriching experience.
Chloe says, ‘It’s been so wonderful having people come to my sessions thinking that they could only draw stick men, only to find out very differently! You can see the real joy they have when the dog they are drawing starts to come to life in front of them. I’ve loved witnessing it and seeing confidences grow. It’s been really sociable, too. I put an emphasis on creating a fun, safe and encouraging environment for all and ensure that everyone leaves feeling a huge achievement.’

North Norfolk Photographic Society
North Norfolk Photographic Society held their first competition of the season on October 5th, with the theme "Home and Garden". As you might expect with such a creative group of people there was a wide range of image styles and the judge, Michael Lloyd, held back 28 images for a second look before coming to his decision. The entries included garden wildlife, interiors, creative multiple and long exposures, even an aerial view taken from a light aircraft. The 4 images awarded gold were: Glasses and Roses by Grace Glaister, Homely Reflections by Robbie Spencer, My Bedroom Chair by Diana Knight, Vase on a Shelf by Valerie Walker. If you are interested in photography and would like to come along to see what we do at the Club, please visit our website nnps.uk for details of meetings and the full programme.
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
On 4 October we had, as usual, an excellent lunch at The Links Hotel in West Runton. Then we were privileged to hear Michael Gurney speak about some of his family history and about his role as High Sheriff of Norfolk in 2021-22. The Gurneys are a distinguished Norfolk family in their own right and Michael is the 13th Gurney to be High Sheriff of Norfolk since 1399! Moreover, Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845), prison reformer, was born a Gurney, and Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton (1786-1845; related to the Gurneys by marriage) had much to do with the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. The role of High Sheriff is unpaid and apolitical. This meant that Michael was able, from a neutral standpoint, to put various bodies in touch with each other and to make sure that things were working. This included being on a prison advisory board; supporting the victim and witness service; encouraging schemes to break the cycle of adverse childhood experiences which can lead to youth crime; working with schools and young people; visiting communities; and many other things-- including, in the process, driving thousands of miles within Norfolk! With two rounds of applause the club thanked Michael for his very interesting talk. On Tuesday 6 December, at our Christmas lunch, Dr Rob Knee will be our guest speaker on another well-known Norfolk family and on 10 January Jacqui Palmer will speak to us about the RNLI (Cromer). Meanwhile, we have room to welcome new members! If you would like to meet some of our current members and find out more about the club, please come along to our coffee morning on Tuesday 15th November. Although we are a men’s club, wives and partners or any other guests are also very welcome to attend from 10.30 at the Hole-in-One Sports Bar, West Runton (next to the Links Hotel). There is no need to book, but more information about the club can be seen on our website at www.candsprobus.club or you can call Dave Vickery on 01263 824306. Menopause, your skin and you.
Unusual Entertainment for Weybourne WI
Help is at hand at the Coltishall Clinic with effective, discounted packages on offer.
Celia Howe, President, welcomed 33 members and 3 visitors to the Village Hall on Wednesday, 5th October. The meeting started with a minute’s silence, to reflect on the death of Her Majesty the Queen. There was a page from a book of condolence for members to sign if they wished.
It has been widely publicised: the effects the menopause can have on us and our bodies both physically and psychologically with there being a minimum of 34 symptoms and according to some as many as 60! With this in mind the effects this can have on our skin and therefore our confidence can be pretty profound. At Coltishall clinic we are committed to helping support our patients through this time with advice on skin rejuvenation and preventative measures. As we age it is natural for our collagen levels to drop and with 30% of our collagen being lost in the first 5 years of menopause the visual effects can be pretty striking. We may start to notice more volume loss, skin textural issues, dryness, pigmentation, lines and wrinkles, dullness and even enlarged pores or puffiness! Some even experience rosacea or worsening symptoms of the aforementioned. As bleak as this seems there are many treatment options available plus homecare that can really help to reverse these signs of ageing and also give us a much needed boost!
Items of business discussed included dates of interest groups and details of forthcoming meetings. Jean Benham was thanked for organising a Coffee Morning for MacMillan Cancer Support, which had raised the grand sum of £715.00.
We were then entertained by the Fool’s Puppit Theatre Company. Julie and Roddy Mackenzie have been performing with their puppets for over 20 years and members enjoyed interacting with their tale of ‘The Great Worm of Webbun’. Afterwards, Julie showed us a selection of their puppets and described how she had made them. She also explained how the puppet shows had originally started during their involvement with Tudor re-enactment events at Kentwell Hall. Both were dressed in authentic Tudor outfits, which had been made by Julie.
Collagen regenerating treatments are at the forefront of this along with our many state of the art lasers that can treat anything from pigmentation to the symptoms of rosacea, skin tightening, and textural improvement. Our faces aside, the menopause can also affect our bodies with there being huge changes one of the most sensitive being vaginal atrophy. Some of the symptoms of this include vaginal itching and burning, dryness, loss of natural lubrication, laxity, incontinence and pain during intercourse. We offer the revolutionary Monalisa touch laser treatment to help with all these symptoms. A minimum of 3 sessions is normally advised and a sensitive consultation and examination with a Dr are given. Why not book a consultation to discuss treatment options and gain some advice from our skin specialists on the ways to proceed and courses of treatment available!
Roddy had brought along 4 Hurdy Gurdys and demonstrated how each of them worked. Members asked a variety of questions. The vote of thanks was given by Pat King. The Fool’s Puppit Theatre will be performing their Christmas Show at Strangers Hall in Norwich during December.
After tea and biscuits, the meeting closed with the drawing of the raffle.
We are offering the following treatment packages during this month
*Save £ 200 on a course of 3 Monalisa touch sessions *Facial Microdermabrasion and radiofrequency session £ 300.00 Course of 6 £1750 this comes with £100 worth of skincare of your choice *Facial microdermabrasion followed by micro needling and radiofrequency combined this comes with £150 worth of skincare products Course of 3 £1700 *Microdermabrasion and peel course of 3 £250.00 with a complimentary product of your choice

We are happy to report that Bear’s blood test was satisfactory and within 3 hours of being advised, his new family had come to collect him. He has settled in very well and his new family have told us that after seeing him they just wanted to offer him a home and that he was well worth waiting for. Jasper, one of our longer-term residents has also left us, and again his new family are delighted to have him join their household. As one of the older cats in care we are very happy to learn that he too has now found his forever home. Last time we also mentioned that we have several young cats who needed homes with experienced cat owners because they were timid and would need more time to adapt and settle. One of these was Sophie, a lovely grey and white girl, who joined us from an outside situation. Sophie has been in her new home for two weeks at the time of writing this. I have had a message from her new family which advises us that she has settled well, is eating well and gaining confidence daily. She does have a hidey hole where she goes if unsure of anything but has bonded with her new owner and loves being stroked by her. We are amazed that she has settled so quickly and are now hoping that some of the other cats will be as lucky as Sophie. We have cat traps which we are happy to lend to people, either to deal with feral colonies or to help return a cat that has lost its way to its family, and several are in use at present. We do ask that people return them as soon as possible as there is often someone else waiting to borrow them. One gentleman borrowed one to deal with some stray cats which he is happy to care for once neutered. He has kept us advised of progress and indicated he will be returning the trap once he and his wife have recovered from Covid. We are happy with this arrangement. Unlike the gentleman who borrowed a trap to catch his Bengal cat which had escaped and was living in Sainsburys Delivery area. Having caught the cat the next day we are still waiting for him to return it. We live in hope but may have to contact Head Office regarding this! If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please
ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, Sophie www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home. We are on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham .

We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over three years old.
plaque causing painful inflammation. Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and immunosuppression, and should be discussed with your vet. Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum) causing teeth to fracture. Advanced lesions can be detected by visual inspection, however, early lesions are very painful but only detected by specialised dental x-ray and therefore dental x-rays are always recommended.
Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. In the Know - District Councillors Report
Water to account in regard to ensuring the accuracy of the data they are producing in regard to Sewage Discharge into our coastal waters, sensitive chalk rivers and inland waterways. This builds on the work initiated by Cllr Withington and Cllr Lloyd to push Anglian Water to bring forward targets to stop sewage discharge from combined sewage outflows.
Cllrs Penny Bevan Jones, Colin Heinink and Liz Withington, the Sheringham Liberal Democrat District Councillor team, continue to support the community through challenging times. Led by Cllr Withington’s Call to Action on Second Homes the council is looking to consider how to increase Council tax for second homeowners but in particular how ensure that this additional money is retained in the North Norfolk Area with the Housing Authority.
At present Councils are not allowed to build social housing, which limits the impact we can make in the provision of truly affordable housing. When we can purchase land and work in partnership with Housing providers NNDC can develop exceptions sites and provide housing for local people. However, only 8p of every pound of your Council tax comes to NNDC, the remaining 92% going to the County Council, Police Crime Commissioner and Fire Service. To be able to make the most of the 8 million potentially raised by a Council Tax levy on second homes, would need local or government agreement for this or a significant percentage of this to stay within the NNDC area as the Housing Authority.
Your team also continue to support residents with Highways issues in several areas, the development of a Warm Spaces Strategy for the Town, Anti-social behaviour, housing issues and food bank referrals. Please do get in touch if we can help you in any way.

The transfer of the Waste bins over to the new system is now well underway. Although, there have been some issues, they should be seen in the context of the scale of the problem. 55,000 bins plus trade waste and brown bins were transferred over to a new system. This has meant new rounds for new staff and changed working practices. The issues that occurred were mainly in the lokes, unadopted roads and a few assisted deliveries. 99.4 % of bins were collected correctly. Your District Cllr team have quickly contacted NNDC for support and Officers have resolved issues in these areas.
The safest method of ear wax removal is by professional micro-suction.
The situation has also been made much more difficult as a result of the unexpected Bank holiday and also due to a shortage of HGV drivers nationally. I am sure you would join us in supporting the SERCO waste operatives in what has been a huge task to transfer. They have worked additional hours to catch the system up and this follows their efforts throughout Covid which kept North Norfolk’s waste systems in operation throughout the pandemic.
ECHO Ear Care is a new service, which is now available in Holt Consulting Rooms for clinic appointments. Home visits also available. Professional Advanced Nurse Practitioners Mari-Anne Jones & Debbie Perez Selsky

Editor’s Recipe - Coconut Slices
Despite the current cost of living crisis and all of us having to tighten our belts, we also need a small treat every so often to lift the spirits. With this in mind, I have tried to select a recipe which uses ingredients which you probably already have in your cupboard and is quick and easy to do. It is an old WI recipe which I remember my mum making when I was a child and it always felt like a treat.
The recipe makes 24 slices and if you make it when you already have the oven on for something else, if not too costly to bake. You will need a 12” x 9” Swiss roll tin.
Ingredients.
225g self-raising flour Pinch of salt 120g softened butter 85g caster sugar ½ beaten egg 3 tablespoons jam (I use raspberry) 120g desiccated coconut 1 tablespoon milk
Method
Pre heat your oven to 160C (or make when the oven is already on). In a medium mixing bowl mix the flour and
Perfect Pie
Anything with pie in the title just has to be good; who doesn’t love a great pie and mash dinner as the evenings draw in and the temperature goes down? Of course, you can go and buy one from the supermarket, but they really are the easiest things to make yourself, and with the availability of excellent ready rolled pastry also one of the quickest. This one requires no meat and can be adapted for vegans too if you use soya cream, which can be bought easily now and keeps for ages in the fridge, making it very user friendly.
It also tastes great and behaves exactly as dairy cream; I make a point of always having it in the house. Roasting veg before using it gives it a heightened flavour and sweetness, which works amazingly well in a pie, particularly the garlic; I promise you it is worth the extra work. It is

salt and 25g of the sugar, rub in the butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Add the beaten egg and a little cold water and bring together to a stiff paste. Wrap and chill in the fridge for 15 mins. Roll out the pastry on a floured board to fit the Swiss roll tin, not forgetting to bring it up sides. Spread the jam generously over the pastry base.
Mix together the coconut and remaining sugar and mix in the milk. Spread over the jam and press down lightly with the back is a spoon. Bake for 30 – 40 minutes, turning the tin so that it bakes evenly. Remove from the oven when golden brown and before the coconut burns. Leave to cool and cut into slices. Keeps well in an airtight tin. Enjoy! – Jo.
using seasonal veg so saves you money whilst delivering lots of nutritious bang for your buck. You could batch cook a number of these pies to save money and time and freeze them cooked. This tastes so delicious even the meat eaters are going to want it!
Roast Veg Pie
¼ celeriac, peeled and cut into small chunks 1 butternut squash, peeled and cut into chunks 6 garlic cloves, left whole and in the skins 1 large white onion, diced 1 leek, quartered lengthways and chopped Punnet mushrooms, quartered Dried thyme Veg stock and thickener such as Bisto Small carton double cream, or soya cream Pack ready rolled puff pastry
Method Start by tossing the celeriac, garlic cloves and butternut squash in a little olive oil, seasoning with salt and pepper and roasting in a pre-heated oven on 180° for approx. ½ hour, or until almost cooked through and slightly browned, then remove and set aside. Meanwhile, gently fry the onion and leek for 10 mins with a tsp dried thyme and add in the mushrooms, frying for a further 5 mins.
Add in enough stock to just cover the veg and stir well, bringing up to the boil. Sprinkle in your thickener until you have a good thick consistency and take off the heat. Stir in the cream, add in the celeriac and squash and squeeze the garlic out of the skins into the mix and stir, adjusting your seasoning to taste.
Place into a deep oven proof dish and cut the puff pastry out to cover the pie, pricking it a few times to let the air escape. Place into your preheated oven for approx. 30mins until the pastry is cooked through and golden and serve immediately. Carolyn Burn

Council to Hold Cost of Living Summit with Local Organisations
The rising cost of living is a significant concern to those living in North Norfolk, with many this winter facing difficult financial decisions. North Norfolk District Council is holding acost-of-living summit on Thursday 3 November, engaging with local organisations and stakeholders to assess the support options available and how to best help residents through hardships as a result of rising costs. Resident's survey The Council has also launched a resident’s survey, seeking views and feedback regarding the cost-of-living impact. The responses received will be analysed for discussion at the summit and shape the action plan. The aim of the summit and survey will be to increase the understanding of the cost-of-living impact across North Norfolk and promote awareness of and support for the various responses and programmes of assistance available in the District, particularly around the issues of food banks usage and energy bills. In attendance will be representatives from countywide and district public bodies, voluntary, charity and community organisations, including faith groups. Sheringham Salvation Army, Cromer Foodbank and Norfolk Community Foundation will be presenting to the summit on their work and how they support residents. Leader of the Council, Cllr. Tim Adams said: “As we head into winter, more residents than ever will be looking towards us as a Council, their local communities and fantastic charities and organisations in North
Norfolk to help them through difficult times. It’s important that we can support any residents who are struggling and holding a summit to create an action plan.” Further advice and support If you need advice and support, there are several ways we can help, and getting help as soon as possible can prevent things from getting worse. Visit our cost-of-living page for further advice and support from the Council, local organisations and charities.
Norfolk Community Foundation – Surviving Winter Appeal
The Norfolk Community Foundation is running a public fundraising campaign for people to donate the rebate to their Surviving Winter campaign to help establish Community Hot-Spots. This year the Norfolk Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter campaign will be helping their charity and voluntary partners establish Community Hot-Spots. These hot spots will provide a warm, inclusive environment for people to take a break from the cold, meet people in their communities and gain access to any support they may need to help them get through the upcoming winter months.
Back by Popular Demand: Christmas Comedy at the Grove!
Christmas is always a time for good cheer, and now North Norfolk residents can gear up for the festive season with three nights of the finest comedy at the Grove in Cromer. Sundown – the Grove’s event space, in two giant tipis – will host the return of Christmas Comedy evenings on Thursday evenings in December. The nights debuted last Christmas and were a smash hit, with comedians from all over the country entertaining full houses with a laugh minute gags and side-splitting stories. Added to which were ‘loaded tables’, featuring Sundown’s unique tapas and pizza, and arrival drinks too.
The foundation is calling on the public to help their communities this winter by helping to provide the Community Hot-Spots by ‘donating the rebate’ whether this is the £150 council tax rebate, the £300 increased winter fuel payment for 65+, the £400 energy grant, or anything you can afford. Several of 2021’s stars, including Mark Simmonds and John Mann, are The Norfolk Community Foundation also provides grants of £2,000 to returning this year, and host Danny Ward is already looking forward to contribute towards the cost of running or establishing a Community the events. Hot-Spot, which can be applied for by charities, grassroots community groups or community organisations looking to provide a warm space for people in their community. The more support they have, the more help they can give communities. Cllr. Tim Adams, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “I welcome the Norfolk Community Foundation initiative to support Community-Hot Spots, otherwise known as Warm Hubs. Residents who can possibly support important workPage will be Beth Lea Sept 21_Layout 1 this 31/08/2021 13:40 1 helping families in their local communities who need additional help this winter during the living costs crisis.”
“Last year’s shows were brilliant; up-for-it crowds, delicious food all in a really unique venue,” he said. “It’s great to be working out of London occasionally so I’m really pleased to be coming back.” Grove partner Richard Graveling is hoping the nights will be a repeat of 2021. “We all had an amazing time last year,” he said, “and we’re anticipating another superb season this time around. There’s nothing quite like it in the area and everyone who came had a wonderful time. The acts are absolutely tremendous and they are special nights very much enjoyed by everyone who came along.”

Selling your home to appeal to energy efficient buyers by Melanie Robson, Associate Hayes + Storr
Energy efficiency matters more to some home buyers these days than the size of the garden. According to a recent survey by Money.com, solar panels now rank ahead of ensuite bathrooms and, as energy prices rise, this trend looks set to continue. So, if you are selling your home, how can you make your house appeal to today’s energy efficient buyers? Fortunately, you can improve your home’s performance and make it easier to sell without spending a fortune.
Your EPC can help you
You will need a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) before marketing your home, and it will then be available to any potential buyer. The EPC is a short report, produced by an accredited energy assessor, on the energy efficiency of a property. It will rate your home A to G, with A being the most energy efficient grading. The EPC should also include recommendations to improve your home’s rating. An EPC lasts for ten years. So, your home may already have one. If you cannot find a copy, you can check on the website: www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate.
Take care to consider the EPC’s recommendations before putting your home on
the market. It may reveal some straightforward ways to make your home more energy efficient. If you are commissioning a new EPC, you may want to increase your home’s energy efficiency first. There may be cost-effective ways of doing this, for example, by switching to LED bulbs or insulating your loft. You can find suggestions at Simple Energy Advice.
Having a higher EPC rating may be more important for some types of property, from 2025, the Government may require rental properties to have at least a C rating. So, if your property could appeal to buy-to-let investors, then you may want to bear this in mind. Currently a privately rented property must have a rating of no less than E.
Every home is unique, and what works well for one property may be more difficult to implement in another. Some properties may not be suitable for cavity wall insulation due to solid walls or because the work may aggravate damp issues.
Upgrading to a new boiler, or installing double, or even triple, glazing could make your home more attractive to buyers concerned about rising energy costs.
Make sure you obtain all the necessary statutory consents
Most significant improvements, including solid or cavity wall insulation, double glazing, solar panels, or new boilers, all require building regulations consent. However, if the contractor installing them is authorised under the Competent Person Scheme, then all procedural matters will be dealt with as standard.
Other consents you may need
Occasionally, there may be title restrictions which mean you need a third party’s consent. If you plan major work, such as installing solar panels, then you should check your property’s title for any restrictions first.
Keep the paperwork safe
Remember to keep any guarantees or warranties safe. Your buyers are likely to require these before completing their purchase. For further information, call 01263 825959 or email mel.robson@hayes-storr.com.

It’s time to bloom in your new home 307. White to play and win
308. White to play and win
In the City, in the County and on the Coast – wherever your Norfolk home, we are your local Trusted Property Experts.
Solution to No. 307: 1. Qxc8! Rxc8 2. Re3! Qf8 3. Bxc8 Qxc8 (otherwise B+2R v. Q would be ample material advantage) 4. Rae1 with 5. Re8+ to follow, winning the Q or mating.
We shall finish the year with two endgame studios for our OTB fans. In No. 309 White wins the black Q after a cascade of sacrifices, pins and forks. Again, should be easy solving from the diagram, so no need to get out board and men.
Let us look after your every need!

Healthier Sheringham
“Healthier Sheringham came about just over a year ago as a result of the community support organisations working together collaboratively through COVID. The idea behind it is to bring all the community organisations and social groups in the town together to collaborate to support the community and improve health and wellbeing. By working together, we can make sure people can access these great community resources, we are not duplicating, and we can share and pool resources, help people to help themselves, prevent crisis and reduce health problems across the community. It also helps to make our community stronger and more resilient.” Cllr Liz Withington, lead and instigator of HS
A number of organisations have been working in partnership with Healthier Sheringham for a year now District Cllrs, the Salvation Army, The Lighthouse, St. Peters Church St. Andrews Church, Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community, Sheringham Community Support, Sheringham Medical Practice, the Patient Participation Group, Parish Nurse, Age Concern NN, Norfolk Carers Association, Playing for Cake, Norfolk Coastal Fitness. Heathier Sheringham also liaises with Active Norfolk, the Integrated Care board, the Clinical Networks and Mind, the Social Prescribing Teams at NNDC and the Community Connectors. Janet Eastwood Chair of Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community commented “Pooling resources is a great benefit for the community.
Healthier Sheringham as a partnership and through Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community obtained funding from Tesco to produce a directory of all the practical support that is in the town such as the Bathing service and Meals on Heels that is available at Age Concern North Norfolk as well as all the activity based and social groups and drop in cafes and lunch clubs.”
To develop the partnership and directory further HS are holding two community Connection Days. The first on the 24th October is for those organisations or groups in the community who provide practical support such as shopping volunteers, bathing services, drop in lunches or community lunches, support with paper work – all those tasks which help people to stay independent in their own homes for longer. The second day is for all our community groups who provide activities, health and fitness opportunities, social activities crafting, musical opportunities etc. Both days will take place at Age Concern North Norfolk, Cremer Street, Sheringham from 10.30-12.30 Please email healthiersheringham@gmail.com to confirm you are coming.
The partnership also is a means for partners to highlight good practice across groups and share but importantly highlight common issues which are affecting the community and residents. It is a means to voice those concerns and bring about positive change for the community. Liz Withington reported that “There are currently significant concern across the partnership about how long it is taking for social service assessments to be completed. This means carers are often having to manage alone and without support. The outcome being often the family www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

goes into crisis or a carer becomes seriously ill themselves. As a partnership we are now raising this as a concern, along with the fact that Norfolk County council no longer enable access to the Social Service Team by telephone making it even more problematic for carers in challenging circumstances to get the help they need. “
Anneliese Maerz also points out that “delays in assessment mean that people are not able to access the care they need when they live alone such as Day Centres and this has a knock-on effect on care providers as they don’t have sustainable numbers getting through the assessment process. Care becomes accessible only to those who can afford to pay for it independently. “
Warm Spaces for All – Sheringham is a project which has also grown out of the Healthier Sheringham Partnership. Partners have come together to develop a strategy for providing warm spaces for all in our community and a meeting was held on 27th October. Anyone with a venue who would like to be part of this, or is part of an organisation who can support with activities or volunteers or businesses who would like to be involved in supporting the provision of warm spaces for those who are perhaps working from home, or can contribute in other ways, please get in touch via healthiersheringham@gmail.com
Coming up Healthier Sheringham have identified the need to build the volunteer base in the community and will be holding a Volunteer Market for the town in the Spring followed by a Health and Wellbeing Festival linked to the Sheringham Walking Festival. There are lots of opportunities for people and groups to get involved and support the health and wellbeing of our residents from inside the town rather than it being done to us by external bodies. Together we are stronger. Please get in touch if you would like to be involved.

North Walsham Michael Hits All the Right Notes! The live music scene in Briston continued in great style on Friday October 14th, when ace keyboard Pop Up player Michael Sullivan wowed the crowds with his amazing playing skill at the Yamaha Tyros 5 keyboard. His programme was just so varied - from The Pirates of Penzance People’s Theatre Overture to the Maple Leaf Rag, Duelling Banjos to Autumn Leaves played in
A free theatre show for all the family will take place in North Walsham this November with shooting stars, rockets and a bright blue monkey bringing a new story, written especially for North Walsham, to audiences.
After a summer of consultation during their free workshops, New Stages has created a new show based on the themes of friendship and kindness to inspire families and children to connect with their community and each other. The 45-minute show, designed for families and younger audiences, will be performed at North Walsham Pop Up People’s Theatre. It’s the new venue where New Stages take over the function room of the Black Swan, on Black Swan Loke, to convert it into a theatre space. Joseph Ballard, Director of New Stages said: “I hope that by presenting this show in the town centre, we can offer something fun for families to share together and make it easy to get to. I’m proud to offer completely free tickets as this will enable lots of people to access it at a time when we’re all feeling the pinch in a cost-of-living crisis.”
the style of a 1950's Hammond organ, the great music just kept coming. Then his wife Elspeth stepped up to the microphone with her amazing voice with numbers such as True Love Ways, Sing, and some fabulous Carpenters hits. The Copeman Centre at Briston puts on seven or eight live music shows each year, featuring top UK and international keyboard or organ players, and the audiences just love them. At just £8 a ticket, you get over two hours of the finest live music you can find anywhere. If you would like more details of future events, give Carol a call on 01263 860844. The next show is on Friday November 25th, when our guest player will be a Briston favourite, the very talented David Harrild.
Our shows are fundraisers for the Copeman Centre - our lovely comfy venue in the heart of our village - and also for the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital (www.orbis.org) If you like live music at its best, do come and join us!
