Completion of the Restoration of Upper Sheringham Church Bells

After over 2 years of hard work and fundraising, we are delighted to report that the work is now complete in the tower of All Saint’s Church, Upper Sheringham, and the bells and clock once more sound out over our beautiful village.

It all started back in February 2018 when the PCC agreed to a full rehang of the derelict 6 bells at All Saints Church in Upper Sheringham on the North Norfolk coast. The bells were to be retuned using modern tuning techniques, the canons removed, and then the bells rehung in a new frame with all new fixtures and fittings. In addition, it was agreed to install an electronically operated chiming mechanism.

There were originally 3 mediaeval bells hung in a large frame high in the tower (this historic empty frame remains in situ). When the new 6 bells were cast in 1841 they made some rather rudimentary adjustments to this frame to fit the 6 bells in. Continued on page 4...

Completion of the Restoration of Upper Sheringham Church Bells

Continued from front cover... Nicholson Engineering were engaged as the bellhangers to carry out the work, assisted by local builder Malcolm Abbs. We are immensely grateful to them, and for all the other help we received most notably from Jon Dorey (local joiner), Chris Copage (Carpenter), Alan Boardman (fabric officer at the time the project started), Ian Dent (clock), Steve Upton (volunteer) and Guy Morton who helped with all the associated administration work and fundraising as well as assisting with the removal of the bells. And last but most certainly not least, all the personal donations we received from local residents and bell ringers from across the world, and all the grant providers – we couldn’t have done it without you!

We were just making arrangements for the bells to return and the work to resume when lockdown hit! Imagine the excitement when churches started to lift restrictions on building works, and we were able to get things moving again. It all seemed to happen so quickly and smoothly then – the contractors worked like a well-oiled machine!

We were unable to volunteer to help with the installation due to social distancing guidelines – this added an unexpected cost to the project as we had to engage more staff from Nicholson Engineering. We are immensely lucky that a member of the congregation had kindly loaned the shortfall enabling us to settle invoices in a timely manner. If anyone would like to make a donation to help towards this shortfall, please contact Sue Morton 01263 826078 or suejmorton@gmail.com

We are absolutely delighted with the result – Nicholson Engineering have done a brilliant job.

A small dedication service led by The Right Revd Jonathan Meyrick, the Bishop of Lynn has been organised by Revd Frank Clarke, the Interim Priest-in Charge with limited attendees due to the social distancing restrictions in place. We intend to arrange a “celebration of bells service when restrictions are lifted where we can ring all of the bells and celebrate with a large service and invite our donors on a date yet to be decided.

Much to everyone’s immense delight, the bells finally rang out once more at the end of August. A glass balustrade dedicated to the Once all restrictions are lifted we will be memory of Elizabeth Martin, one-time organist delighted to welcome visitors to our practice at Upper Sheringham, this is being manufactured nights on a Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9pm, and and should be installed next month. The very much look forward to introducing local balustrade will bear the inscription “We call, residents to the delights of bell ringing and from tower and steeple, Upon the day of days, getting them on the end of a bellrope! All faithful Christian people, To worship, Sue Morton, Project Coordinator prayer and praise a quotation from the hymn “Unchanging God often called the bellringers’ hymn. Well Autumn arrived with a bang! The roofers will be happy.

Covid 19 restrictions are ever changing, creating yet another blow to our leisure and hospitality industry. We are very lucky here in North Norfolk however, with one of the lowest incidence of infections in the country. I like to think that this is down to most people obeying the rules and being careful and considerate. Now, more than ever, we need to keep this up and avoid a further lock down, for the sake of our businesses and our vulnerable. So, stock up on those designer face masks and dig in. This may be a long haul, but it will be worth it when we come through the other side. Oh, and don’t forget to get that flu jab!

Solution to No. 282: 1 Nh1, no threat. 1… d4 2. Qf1 (set 2. Ne4); by-play 1… Qxa6 2. Rxa6, 1… Q else 2. QxQ, 1… B- 2. Rf3. The move 2. Qf1, unpinning the black Q after 1… d4 has cut her off from f2, is a Gamage unpin. This changed mate after a no-threat key with every black move answered by a mate in the initial position, makes the problem a Mutate.

We will be continuing to publish the magazine monthly for the foreseeable future until advertising and editorial picks up. Copies may take a little longer to deliver due to occasional problems with covering delivery rounds, but magazines are available at most of our usual pick up points.

Cyril Stanley Kipping composed around 7000 problems, was Problem Editor in both Chess and Chess Amateur, and edited The Problemist for over 30 years. His No. 284 is a Miniature (7 units or fewer) with a promotion theme. The key piece is obviously the Q, who is a mere spectator in the diagram, and her destination should be pinpointed by the need to guard certain squares after the black K takes his flights with discovered check, so Difficulty again 2.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

Publishing date Friday 6th November Friday 11th December Friday 15th January

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offe fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

Great progress at Sheringham Woodfields School for the MBE, sums up the school's preparedness for the 2020/21 academic year, 2020/21 academic year saying: "All the appropriate precautions are in place to enable the school

Despite the limitations created by Covid-19 during the past few months, developments at Sheringham Woodfields School have progressed apace.

to fully re-open on 7th September with 135 pupils and 130 staff. This number includes the extra twenty-four pupil places made possible by the building of the Therapeutic Centre. Until the Centre is finished, a number of existing rooms have been repurposed to provide 15 classes with an average of 9 pupils per class. We look forward to welcoming everyone back."

The primary project has been the building of the Fields Therapy Centre, which is nearing completion and has remained on budget despite lock-down, furlough and supply chain shortages. All materials needed to complete the building are now on site, and although final landscaping consent is still awaited, it is hoped that it will include the planting of 49 mature trees. Despite lock-down, handover is now scheduled for the end of October 2020, meaning that the Centre will be available for pupils to use after half term.

Dear Editor,

In memory of Dorothy Joan Wisbey 03.05.1934 – 03.07.2020 Dorothy moved from Cheshunt in Hertfordshire to Alymerton in 1987 and soon moved to Sheringham, a town she dearly loved! It was not long before she got involved in community life. She worked at Woolworths in Cromer in the early 1990’s until her retirement at 60, after which she worked at other retail shops including Craskes in Sheringham. She regularly attended Alymerton Church where she made many friends; she soon started helping setup the church before Sunday service and making teas and coffees. Dorothy was always sporty and enjoyed playing table tennis at a local club, and anyone who played against her knew she was a force to be reckoned with! Soon she was running the group. Some six years ago whilst playing she had a fall and broke her hip and wrist, but this didn’t stop her from playing for long and as soon as possible she was back with bat and ball in hand. She also loved going dancing with Paul and meeting their friends there. Dorothy loved her volunteering work and giving to charity. She enjoyed volunteering in the Sheringham Little Theatre as an usher, where she was very popular and one of the longest serving volunteers. She also enjoyed volunteering at the museum, The Mo, where she worked for over 20 years at the front desk. She was very much part of the Museum since it’s early days in the cottages in Station Road. Even in her advancing years she often took on double shifts! She had many friends and was well known in Sheringham. Her family would like to thank the Vicar, Ruth Adamson who conducted the service at Cromer Crematorium and Blyth & Sons Funeral Directors especially Helen and Hayley. Finally, huge thanks go out to all Dorothy’s friends for their love and support and their kind donations to her chosen charities - Sight for Life and Macmillan’s. Karen Joiner (daughter).

Two further projects have been completed during the spring/summer months: firstly, a new playground area has been completed which will enhance the outdoor activities of the pupils: secondly a landscaped island with holding bays for vehicles bringing pupils to school has been created, which will allow them to enter and leave school in controlled, social-distancing groups.

The Centre is part of the Local Authorities SEND Transformation project to increase numbers in special education.

Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important link in the Test and Trace system The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread.

we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe.

If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household. It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms.

Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.

As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next.

But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them.

Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure

If you are alerted by NHS Test and Trace, you must isolate for 14 days after your contact with the individual. If you develop symptoms, you must book a test at the NHS coronavirus website and your household must isolate.

Keeping yourselves and others safe

Coronavirus is still with us. Cases in Norfolk are low and we want to keep them that way. The best thing to do to protect ourselves and others is to continue to wash our hands regularly, keep our distance from others and wear a face covering in shops and on public transport.

7LPH 7R 0RYH 2Q"

To protect others, you and everyone living in your house should isolate straight away if you show symptoms. The symptoms are: a new continuous cough; fever; or a loss or change in your taste and smell.

ZZZ LGHDVRIFKDQJH FRP

As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Everyone is eligible to get a test if they have symptoms. You can choose either a drive-through test or a home test kit. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next.

NHS Test and Trace will contact people who test positive for Covid-19. They will ask you about who you have been in contact with from two days before onset of symptoms to seven days after. This will identify people at risk who could pass on the virus before (or without) showing symptoms themselves.

For more information about how to stay safe and how to get support if you need it whilst isolating visit: norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus

Local Outbreak Control Plan

A Norfolk Local Outbreak Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others, Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus.

The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the first place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in specific work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can find further guidance and support.

Having a flu vaccination will help protect you, your family and your NHS Health chiefs are urging people in Norfolk and Waveney to have a flu vaccine to help protect themselves and their families and ease pressure on the NHS this winter. GP surgeries and community pharmacies have begun vaccinating local people against flu. This year there will be a change to the way flu vaccinations are delivered as health teams need to factor in social distancing and infection prevention measures in order to continue to keep people safe. Due to this, vaccinations will be delivered in a phased way with various cohorts of patients being invited at different times. Some GP practices may be offering drivethrough appointments at community centres or village halls, and practices are contacting those eligible by letter, telephone or text to offer specific time appointments rather than the usual drop-in sessions. Please be patient – you don’t need to contact your GP practice as they’ll be in touch with you. Alternatively you can contact a pharmacy for an appointment. Many local community pharmacies are also offering bookable flu vaccination appointments for those who are eligible. So please contact your pharmacy for details. Pharmacies are working with GP colleagues to ensure the best possible access to the vaccine for all eligible groups and may be able to offer evening or weekend appointments. This year will be the most comprehensive flu programme ever, with more people eligible for the free NHS vaccine which will be given over the next few months. With this in mind, NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is urging the public to have the vaccine for flu if they are eligible as it will reduce the risk of catching and spreading the virus over the winter months.

Flu can cause severe illness and even death among vulnerable groups, as well as complications like bronchitis and pneumonia.

Patients in ‘at risk’ groups who are eligible to receive a free flu vaccination include: • everyone aged 65 years or over • women who are pregnant • those aged six months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups including patients who suffer from a chronic illness, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), kidney disease, hepatitis, Parkinsons, HIV and diabetes • children aged two or three years old on 31 August 2020 • all primary school-aged children • children with a health condition that puts them at a greater risk of flu • those in long-stay residential care homes • Carers - including young carers, parent carers and adult carers - who are looking after a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, mental health or addiction cannot manage without their support • All frontline health and social care workers

This year also includes: • year 7 secondary school-aged children – these vaccinations will take place at school • household members of those who may have been shielding • later in the year the age range may extend to those aged 50-64

Autumn Planting

Autumn is nearly upon us and we need to be thinking about next year in terms of what to plant now and what we would like to grow. Bulbs are the main topic of this article especially spring bulbs such as: Galanthus (Snowdrops), Crocus, Daffodils, Hyacinth, Iris, Narcissus and Tulips. Bulbs are very versatile and can be planted in open ground, under grass and in containers.

I am going to focus on container planting; however, the general rules apply to all planting areas. Bulbs should be planted in free draining multi-purpose compost, with one part of grit to three parts compost to aid drainage. If they sit in an area of high moisture the chances are, they will rot.

With containers we want to get the longest flowering show possible and one way to achieve this is through lasagne planting or layering of the bulbs. So, we need to know how deep the bulbs need to be planted and what time of spring they will emerge.

Generally speaking, snowdrops and crocus are the first to appear and are also the smaller bulbs, then come daffodils, narcissus, followed by tulips. The rule of thumb for the planting depth is three times the height of the bulb, so in the case of tulips 5cm or 2inches, they will be planted 15cm or 6inches deep, they also need to be planted one bulb width apart, with the pointed end upwards. This can be your first and deepest layer. Cover with compost and follow on top with a layer of daffodils or narcissus, following the same rules. As you are nearing the top cover again and plant, crocus, snowdrops which will be the first to flower and the shallowest planting.

www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

10

Later this year, the flu vaccine may be offered to 50-64 year olds providing there is sufficient vaccine, and no NHS appointments will be offered for this age group until then. This is to ensure that those who are most at risk are vaccinated first. If you are 50-64 and you are in one of the other groups which is eligible for the flu vaccination, for example you have a health condition which puts you at risk from the flu, you will be invited earlier. Dr Anoop Dhesi, a GP and Chair of NHS Norfolk and Waveney CCG, said: “Across Norfolk and Waveney we are working hard on our vaccination program plans and our GPs, nurses, community pharmacists and others will be going to great lengths this year to give this vital protection to many more people in a safe and convenient way. So when the time comes would urge everyone invited for a flu vaccination to get it as soon as possible. “Flu can be a horrible virus, especially if you've already got a respiratory illness and if bad enough, could mean you having to go into hospital, something none of us really want.

“We particularly want to encourage over 65s, pregnant women, those with certain medical conditions, carers and those who have been shielding to get the vaccine. I would urge all people who fit into the key groups to think about being vaccinated this year, it could save lives and help protect the NHS this winter.”

More information on who is eligible for the flu vaccine is available here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/ vaccinations/who-should-have-flu-vaccine

As a result you have three layers and several weeks of colour, the container needs to be watered regularly, and if you have problems with mice or squirrels cover the top of the container with wire mesh until the bulbs appear. As you have planted containers, so you have the ability to move them around your property, so they benefit from the sun.

To promote good flowering next year, feed the bulbs every seven to ten days with a high potassium fertiliser such as a liquid tomato feed. Begin feeding as soon as shoots appear, and stop feeding once the foliage starts to die down at the end of the season

You could also think about other plants to put in the top of the containers which will give you further colour and interest, winter pansies, violas, cyclamen, dwarf wallflowers and heucheras.

On the allotment, now is the time to plant winter onions and garlic followed in mid-October with a winter sowing of broad beans that will stand through the winter and give you a head start in the spring. Chris Wright

1 carton thick custard

Tropical Heaven

1 fresh ripe mango, peeled and cut into chunks

Every so often, a recipe occurs that is so ridiculously easy, but so sublimely delicious, that you just know it is going to be a favourite forever.

1 fresh pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into chunks

Whilst experimenting with pudding recipes for the café, this happy accident materialised, and we have served it several times this year to much delight!

Mix the mango into the custard in a large bowl.

Thoroughly whisk in the Greek yoghurt, leaving no lumps.

These tins of mango puree are what I would call a ‘hero’ ingredient, they are just so versatile and useful. I make a point of always having them on the shelf. This is also great even without the fresh fruit, which just adds extra nutritional goodness and flavour, but the puree is a wonderful flavour all on its own, and you can even make a super quick version by just mixing the puree into some really good, thick Greek yogurt.

Cover and place in the fridge to chill.

Chill the fruit separately.

This is the ultimate version here, a super luxurious and creamy pudding, that cleanses the palate and will have everyone coming back for more.

When ready to serve, fold the fruit into the fool, and serve with biscotti or amaretti biscuits.

Will your home make it fit for the future by Emma Langley, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

Property is often the most valuable asset in someone’s estate when they die. It is also a home and may need to remain a home for a surviving partner, spouse, or children. It can be difficult to balance the need to provide a home for loved ones or dependants with ensuring your assets ultimately pass to those who you wish to provide for.

Types of Property Ownership

There are many different ways in which a property can be held. This could be in your sole name, or jointly with others, or even in a Trust.

Property in joint names is held as either “Joint Tenants” or “Tenants in Common”. If held as Joint Tenants, the property will pass to the surviving owner on death, regardless of the terms of your Will. The surviving owner of the property is then free to do as they wish with the property.

If held as Tenants in Common, each owner has a separate and distinct share and therefore their share can be left in accordance with the terms of their Will.

Blended Families

If you own a property with a partner and have children from a previous relationship,

you may want your children to benefit from your assets, but would not want your partner to be made homeless in the event of your death.

Your Will can be structured to create a Trust on your death, ensuring your partner can remain living in the property for a period or the rest of their life. When that right ends or on your partner’s death, your share of the property then passes to the beneficiaries named in your Will. Your partner’s share would pass in accordance with the terms of their own Will.

This arrangement can be beneficial should your partner need care after your death, as only their share of the property is available to fund the care fees with your share protected for your beneficiaries. Careful thought needs to be given to how payment of outgoings, mortgages and Inheritance Tax are to be funded. Such an arrangement is often not possible if equity release is either in place or likely to be required.

Lifetime Gifting

Gifting a property during your lifetime to an individual or into a Trust may seem appealing for both Inheritance Tax and Care fee planning. However, such a gift

also means relinquishing control of your asset and can risk your security.

The law in relation to gifting property, property Trusts, Inheritance Tax and care fees is extremely complex and depends on your individual circumstances. Advice is therefore strongly recommended to ensure your wishes are achieved effectively, taking into account your individual circumstances.

Poors and Ploughlet Trust A Helping Hand this Christmas

A Trust in Sheringham/Upper Sheringham is hoping to make Christmas a little bit easier for some families through the award of grants.

People in the town can apply for a Christmas Grant from the Poors and Ploughlet Trust, which was set up to give financial assistance to people residing in what was the Ancient Parish of Sheringham and Upper Sheringham. Grants are made each December to assist with the expenses of Christmas and to provide a festive “perk”. Applicants must be in receipt of a “means tested benefit” such as Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit or a similar benefit. The Trust is also able to give financial assistance to people who can show a particular need, for example those who might need household repairs, household equipment or aids towards a specific disability. The Trust can also help certain groups such as young and old peoples’ organisations and community groups. The overall consideration is that the applicant has to satisfy the residential qualification previously mentioned and to show that there is a need for assistance. The Charity is a long-established Parish charity, is very well off and routinely does not spend all it's income. The Trustees would like to attract more applications, including for the Christmas Grants. These have for years been routinely provided to people who are entitled to means tested benefits and living within the ancient Parish boundaries. To apply for a Christmas Grant please get in touch with the Secretary of the Trust, Sally Gill by calling 01263 514559 or mailing sallyg5@ btinternet.com The closing date for applications is 14th November 2020.

Hedgehog Haven

This is Stumpy, he is a 100grm hoglet, unfortunately both his back legs are deformed, this could have happened in the nest as sometimes siblings will nibble the others feet, he can move quite quickly & is gaining weight my only concern is that he had a nasty injury on his back which had fly strike which some had already hatched into maggots I'm hoping I’ve caught them in time before any internal damage is done. Baca use of the Covid pandemic I have not been able to do any fundraising, so therefore I have had printed a Hedgehog Haven calendar 2021 which feature some of the hogs which were in my care during 2019, if you would like to purchase one you will find them at North Walsham Garden Centre on Norwich Road from this coming weekend, all profits will help towards the cost of the hedgehogs food and medication. Many Thanks.

GREAT NEWS! WE’RE OVER HALFWAY THERE! BUT WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!

North Norfolk Macmillan Cancer Unit Progress Report The Cromer Community and Hospital Friends fundraising campaign was launched just before the Covid 19 pandemic broke. The target was to raise £500,000 to equip the planned new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre.

Unfortunately, all the major fundraising events for the year have had to be cancelled which was a major blow to the campaign. But the amazing news is that with the help of a legacy, local grants, and the wonderful endeavours of local people the Hospital Friends have managed to raise over £250,000, half of the amount needed.

The building work on the new Centre is progressing well and is on target to open in the Summer of 2021. Below is an artist’s impression of what the new Centre will look like. However, there is still a long way to go to raise the money to fully equip the Centre so that it can work at its full potential. This will be an amazing and desperately needed facility, especially as the demand for cancer referrals after Covid 19 is expected to increase significantly.

The Cromer Hospital Friends have to try and find alternative ways to raise funds because of the current situation and we have some really

It was with much regret and sadness of all our members and supporters, that we had to cancel the Battle of Britain Memorial that we had planned to take place at our War Memorial on Tuesday 15th September, 2020 at 10.45.a.m., paying tribute to 74 and 242 Aquadrons that took off from RAF Coltishall, remembering those who did not return, and indeed all the very brave airman to whom we say a 'Huge Thank You' to. It is hoped that Covid-19 will not intervene when we hope to re-schedule this event next year.

However, it was with great honor and pride that we were able to fly from our St. Mary's Church tower thanks to Richard, the RAF Ensign, and thanks also to Phil and Jo Ogley who placed a wreath on our Village Sign.

We do, indeed, face challenging times ahead, as at the moment, we are unable to hold our Branch Meetings, but please keep an eye out for announcements regarding the re-commencement of these through this paper, our Facebook, or telephone Lorna on 01263 579633. We are maintaining good communications with everyone, and we do welcome new members.

In the meantime, from everyone here at Northrepps RBL keep safe and well.

As an Accredited Gold Standard Rabbit Friendly Practice we are proud to be able to treat even the most complicated of cases but sometimes these cases can be particularly challenging!

Beautiful six-year-old Lola (a Netherland Dwarf mix rabbit) was referred to us for a second opinion as she had been suffering from repeated episodes of gastrointestinal stasis (when the intestines stop moving and the rabbit stops eating and passing faeces). These episodes can be potentially life threatening so it is important to find the underlying cause. Our team performed a thorough examination and realised that Lola’s eyes were bulging slightly more than normal. In rabbits this can be a sign of a problem within their chest so our team performed x-rays to assess Lola’s chest and thex-rays showed there was a large “mass” within Lola’s chest which was compressing her lungs and preventing them expanding properly.

recurring in the future. After intensive nursing within our dedicated exotic pet hospital ward, Lola recovered well and began eating and passing faeces and was discharged to continue her recovery at home. Rabbits are able to hide the signs of disease well so it is always worth getting them checked thoroughly.

Duncan Baker’s September Newsletter

To further assess this mass and find out its origin and assess any potential treatment options a CT scan was performed. This scan showed the mass within Lola’s chest was actually her stomach, pancreas, right kidney and part of her liver. These organs had travelled through a diaphragmatic hernia (a hole within the diaphragm which should separate the chest and abdomen) and the organs were compressing Lola’s lungs reducing her ability to breath. At the same time the lungs and heart were compressing Lola’s stomach and abdominal organs which meant she couldn’t eat or digest food properly hence the episodes of gastrointestinal stasis.

Dear all, I hope you have enjoyed the summer and fine weather throughout most of August. Parliament has now resumed for what is sure to be an extremely busy few months back in Westminster. As I look forward to that, I want to reflect on what has been my first Summer Recess and just how enjoyable it has been to spend the majority of my time touring the constituency, meeting so many of you. There has been no sitting about and on my first day back home, I started a 54-location tour working from East to West across the constituency. From the brilliant sunshine in Horsey, Hickling and Ludham on day 1 we finished in the pouring rain in Langham, Holkham and Wells six weeks later! Being active, approachable, and visible in the community are some of my principle aims as your MP and as I made my way around the constituency, the reception from everyone I met was hugely welcoming. I have been truly humbled by the warmth from so many residents who took the time to meet me and ask me questions, and it’s been a pleasure solving so many problems that people wanted to share. Whether helping constituents with cancelled operations or taking up highway issues in many of our villages, the tour has been a great success and it has been enormously rewarding to help so many. From listening to many stories of people overcoming such difficult situations throughout the pandemic, to meeting entrepreneurs who’ve started businesses in their garages during lockdown, not a day went by when I wasn’t amazed by the spirit and communities that define North Norfolk. It has been an incredibly busy summer with a huge influx of visitors to our area. This has been a lifeline to our local economy, and North Norfolk alone has enjoyed 203,000 discounted meals through the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, benefiting local businesses by over £1m. Despite such a busy period we have continued to see remarkably low infection rates. As our children return to school, having missed seeing their friends for many months, I wish them all a safe return. In the run-up to Christmas, I will be visiting more towns and villages around the constituency, offering surgeries, and supporting residents, charities, and businesses in any way I can.

Luckily for Lola, Toll Barn Vets is one of only a handful of East Anglia veterinary centres with an in-house CT scanner and also the facilities and skills to perform an intricate surgery to save Lola’s life. Our team of vets and nurses had to use specialised anaesthetic techniques to keep Lola asleep and pain free as the hole in her diaphragm meant she was unable to breath for herself whilst under general anaesthetic. Our surgeon then used microsurgical equipment to locate Lola’s stomach, liver, pancreas and kidney within her chest and delicately relocate them to their “normal” position within her abdomen. Our team then carefully repaired the hole (hernia) in her diaphragm to prevent the problem

TARTE TATIN

Autumn is here with a bang and of course fruit in all forms are coming off the trees (a little quicker than preferred after the recent storms!) The outdoor seating on the conker lawns wasn’t the place to be as seventy-mile-per-hour winds turned our ripening horse chestnuts into very effective munitions, which left access to the garden last Friday night quite an ordeal.

However John’s apples survived and are now sitting happily in the kitchen waiting for the chefs to incorporate them into menus. In fact there were so many that all the staff have been carrying home bags and boxes of cookers and eaters to distribute to friends and family.

This is actually a Raymond Blanc all-time classic recipe that we have used several times over the years; often serving in individual portions perfect for our restaurant. It’s a great dish and I’m sure it will feature again in the forthcoming months.

Do come and see us for dinner – we start our a la carte at 5pm so there’s plenty of time to adhere to the 10pm curfew! 01263 821463

Ingredients 300g all-butter puff pastry Plain flour, for dusting 6 dessert apples (about 900g/2lb), such as Braeburn, Cox’s Orange Pippin or Adam’s Pearmain 100g golden caster sugar

Method 1. Roll the pastry to a 3mm-thick round on a lightly floured surface and cut a 24cm circle, using a plate as a guide. Lightly prick all over with a fork, place on a baking sheet, then cover and freeze while preparing the apples. 2. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Peel, quarter and core the apples. Put the sugar in a flameproof 20cm ceramic tatin dish or a 20cm ovenproof heavy-based frying pan and place over a medium-high heat. Cook the sugar for 5-7 mins to a dark amber caramel syrup that’s starting to smoke, then turn off the heat and stir in the 60g diced chilled butter. 3. To assemble the tarte tatin, arrange the apple quarters very tightly in a circle around the edge of the dish first, rounded-side down, then fill in the middle in a similar fashion. Gently press with your hands to ensure there are no gaps. Brush the fruit with the melted butter. 4. Bake in the oven for 30 mins, then remove and place the disc of frozen puff pastry on top – it will quickly defrost. Tuck the edges down the inside of the dish and, with a knife, prick a few holes in the pastry to allow steam to escape. Bake for a further 40-45 mins until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.

5. Allow to cool to room temperature for 1 hr before running a knife around the edge of the dish and inverting it onto a large serving plate that is deep enough to contain the juices. Serve with crème fraîche or vanilla ice cream.

85g unsalted butter (60g/21/4oz chilled and diced, 25g/1oz melted) Crème fraîche (full-fat please!) or high-quality vanilla ice cream, to serve

The Prom must go on!

After incredibly challenging beginnings to the year it seemed that teenagers missed out on so much more than their predecessors. Namely the Year 11 school leavers who were literally at school one minute and gone the next as in the case of Yr 11s from Cromer Academy. Covid-19 struck, and their worlds turned upside down without so much like a single GCSE to take after years of hard work.

There was no proper last day and no chance of a Prom like so many before them. They were at school one day and gone the next. It was just so sad that their prom dresses were just left to hang redundant in wardrobes! It really seemed like a distant pipe dream with so many rules, regulations and red tape but when mums are determined to make

Sweet Treats Raise Funds for Macmillan A Macmillan Cake Day was held on 11th September, by Pentaco Constuction, the company building the new Macmillan Cancer Unit at Cromer Hospital. Delicious cakes and bakes were on sale, all socially distanced of course, to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. £1370 was raised and a few inches added to waistlines too, but all in a very good cause.

The event was organized by Louise Reeve, Social Value & Engagement Manager, Pentaco Construction Ltd (pictured).

Mannington Estate held their annual Charity Day this September, Lord and Lady Walpole were pleased not to break their 40-year record of holding this event! Despite Covid concerns around 500 people visited the gardens on 6th September and supported the local charities attending. Funds of around £3,700 were raised, this was made up from entrance fees and tearooms and will go to the local churches of Erpingham, Alby and Thwaite. Other charities ran their usual stands with good results. This year they were joined by a group of local craftspeople with ceramics, silver, woodwork and more.

Coronavirus Job Support Scheme

Employment Law Update: by Shaun Taylor

With the end of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme in sight (31 October 2020), the Chancellor has outlined the structure of an additional scheme, the Job Support Scheme, ('JSS') that will start from 1 November 2020 and run for an initial 6 months.

The JSS is intended to move away from the furlough scheme and only support viable jobs, roles that are still required but face reduced hours due to reduced demand flowing from the economic impact and the continuing restrictions.

As such, to benefit from the scheme, employees must work at least 33% of their usual hours.

Employers will have to wait for the guidance and legislation to be released by the government to see the detail of the scheme and whether it will be a viable option. But we know from the introduction of the CJRS that this may be inconsistent and take several iterations before all questions are answered.

Main Points:

The main points known so far are: 1. Employees must be working at least 33% of their usual hours.

2. For the hours lost and not worked, the government and employer will each pay one third of the equivalent salary. 3. The government contribution will be capped at ÂŁ697.92 per month.

The example provided by the government shows that an employee working 33% of their normal hours will be paid in full for that 33% by their employer. The government and employer will then pay an additional 22% each (66% x 2/3), subject to the cap, resulting in the employee receiving 77% of their normal pay.

• Employees must have been employed on 23 September 2020 in order to be eligible.

• Employers who are eligible to claim the Jobs Retention Bonus can do so along side the JSS.

Employers are not able to serve redundancy notices on employees who are on the JSS. Whether this means consultation can take place or not is unclear.

Our expert Employment Law Team work with employers to understand their business and the problems they face, find a tailored and pragmatic solution that will suit their needs and help implement any changes. For more information contact us on 01263 823398, email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk

Eligibility: • All employers are eligible however, large businesses must show a fall in turnover, as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, in order to apply.

• Both employees and employers are eligible even if they did not use the CJRS scheme previously.

Ned Nimbus Weather Prediction October – December

After the past three months of typical British weather the next three months are unlikely to stray far from normal. OCTOBER is likely to still give us good fine spells with temperatures above average. Overall, no weather type will last for long with a fairly mobile Atlantic driven pattern continuing. NOVEMBER and DECEMBER overall we can expect a couple of months with no set of conditions sticking around for long and temperatures around average. November 10 and December 8. It is worth noting that at the time of writing a large area of cold air sits over Greenland and adjacent northern latitudes, this will need watching because a deep depression (possibly ex tropical) tracking between Iceland and Scotland for instance could redistribute some of this cold air mass. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

A tender love story born through a baby monitor

A romantic comedy about two lonely, socially-distanced young people is taking to the stage at Sheringham this month.

Blink is a love story revolving around flat landlady Sophie, an introvert software developer, and her new timid tenant Jonah.

He said: “My character used to do surveillance as a security night watchman – then gets sent a baby monitor which opens up a new relationship and experience for him. It is very poignant.”

She used to keep tabs on her terminally ill dad in the flat using a baby monitor. He was brought up in a religious commune in Yorkshire. They are thrown together in London in a tale of voyeurism and vulnerability - and a virtual relationship that blossoms into Megan Artherton and Sam Thompson prepare for their a real one in a roles as Sophie and Jonah in Blink. “rom com” with Photo: Richard Batson a difference.

Pigmentation treatments

A uniform skin tone and texture is desired by many irrespective of their colour and considered a sign of skin health. Pigmentation can have a number of causes such as excessive sun exposure, genetics, injuries, inflammation or disorders such as melasma. Melasma is a commonly acquired disorder of hyperpigmentation.

Treatment of melasma has been traditionally centered on the use of daily sunscreen and topical bleaching creams or chemical peels. A careful evaluation and diagnosis of cause of pigmentation is important.

Response to treatment can be variable and recurrence very common so some kind of maintenance such as long-term use of sunscreen and lightening agents is often recommended. Most benign pigmentation and pigmented lesions however can be treated very successfully. Why not give us a call on 01603 736487 or log on to the website

Inspirational golfer Molly remembered at seaside club she loved Evergreen golfer Molly Johns is being remembered at her home club – every time players walk to the first tee.

Molly played at Mundesley for more than 50 years, from 1967 until just a few months before her death in June 2019 aged 90. A former club ladies captain, she was still winning competitions in her mid-80s, and was also well-known across the county spending 26 years running the Norfolk Ladies Golf Captains Society, where she was also president.

Molly, from Thorpe, was also a social member at Eaton Golf Club where her son Peter is general manager. Mrs Johns’ parents used to live at Happisburgh, and several of the family played at Mundesley, where she commuted twice a week for her golf. The course is also poignant because her husband Tom sadly died there while playing the 18th hole aged 59 in 1986. The couple were both captains in the same year, 1978.

Friends and fellow golfers, including three former county presidents, gathered at Mundesley this week to honour her by naming the newly-resurfaced pathway from the clubhouse car park to the first tee as Molly’s

Way, paid for by a gift to the club from Mrs Johns’ will. Son Peter said: “Mum loved her golf, and lot of it was down to the friendships she made at Mundesley. She was a formidable lady, so it is very apt the path is called Molly’s Way – because it was either Molly’s way or no way.

At the opening ceremony, ladies’ captain Jenny Smith recalled an “amazing lady who was bubbly company and inspired younger golfers, winning countless competitions at club and county level, and who loved telling a story. There were also short speeches from club president Mike Foster and men’s captain Pat Kerrison.

On 11th September 2020, the trustees of COAST Arts met to discuss our future given the pandemic we have been living with since March this year and the fact that restrictions appear to be getting tighter again.

It is with a heavy heart that the small group of trustees have agreed to close the charity. Since we wrote to you in June with a more optimistic outlook on how COAST Arts would come back in 2021, a number of the trustees have found that with the changes in their lives following the Coronavirus crisis, they do not have the time or space to continue all that they were doing to keep COAST Arts going. We also realise that it may be sometime before the events that we had planned could come to fruition, particularly our annual festival which has been the hallmark of COAST Arts for the last 10 years.

We will be working closely with our partners and funders to hopefully pass on some of the work we do so that it continues, possibly in another form, within Cromer and the surrounding area.

We are especially grateful to NOVA, Friends of North Lodge Park, The Belfry Centre for Music and the Arts, Rock the Lobster, The Atrium Cinema Group and others who have made significant contributions to COAST Arts, for all their support and help over the years. We hope that they will all continue to flourish in what is a particularly difficult time for the arts.

We will be closing our online presence very soon and winding up the charity so there’s nothing left to say now except ‘Thank you for all your support and Goodbye!’

Update from Coastal Arts

Our final thanks must go to our funders, without whom, we wouldn’t have been able to undertake all the events and exhibitions for the last 10 years and in particular to Cromer Town Council, Norfolk County Council, and The Geoffrey Watling Charity who regularly supported us.

For information about Mundesley Golf Club and its range of facilities and memberships for all ages and abilities visit www.mundesleygolfclub.com or call 01263 720279.

We also hope that the new group, Cromer Artspace, will continue with some of the work we have undertaken in the last 10 years. It is a wonderful place to live and without the arts North Norfolk would be a much duller place.
