First patient treated in North Norfolk Macmillan Centre
The first patient to receive her cancer care at the new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre has told of a ‘wonderful environment for patients and staff’ that is closer to home and less crowded than the hospital she normally visits.
Jane Ducker, 65, from Aylsham, was the first patient to walk through the doors of the state-of-the-art cancer centre, where services including a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre and an Acute Oncology Service are opening gradually from this week.
She was coming in for the immunotherapy treatment she receives every three weeks as part of a long-term cancer management plan for renal cancer, taking her place in a treatment chair that, like all the furniture in the centre, had been tested for comfort by a group of patients and clinical staff.

First patient treated in North Norfolk Macmillan Centre
Continued from front cover...
With five providing space to administer lifesaving cancer medication for up to 30 patients a day, plus a chair for the Acute Oncology Service which supports patients with cancer who have complications or symptoms related to their cancer or its treatment. This new facility means the days of lengthy round trips to Norwich are now behind Jane, and many like her.
Those in need of investigations, check-ups and minor operations are also now able to access the care they need closer to home, as three new clinic rooms and two minor procedure rooms make it possible to offer an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually.
Jane said: “The new unit is light and bright - what a wonderful environment for patients and staff. From the window, we can even see the birds and squirrels playing in the garden. I’ve been treated regularly for about four years and was able to transfer from Norwich to Cromer last year for my immunotherapy where I received treatment in the main Cromer building and now in this new centre. The Weybourne Unit at the N&N Hospital is marvellous but the whole Norwich site is so much busier and more difficult to get to from my home.
“I like being with other patients when I have my treatment as you can laugh with people and help the treatment along. Some might expect a cancer unit to be a sad place, but sharing experiences makes a difference and the treatment is less scary as a result.” The £4.85million project was designed by LSI Architects and completed in just over a year, with construction work continuing throughout last winter’s lockdown. Funding for the centre has been provided jointly by Macmillan Cancer Support, the Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals Charity, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Cromer Community and Hospital Friends.

Jane’s visit came ahead of Macmillan Cancer Support’s annual Coffee Morning on 24th September, which remains a crucial source of donations for services and projects funded by the charity. It has seen sign-ups drop more than three quarters below average for the second year running and is encouraging the public to host an event whenever and however suits them.

We want the local community to have a hand in shaping the support services and activities on offer. A Note from the editor
Get your woolies out and fire up that central heating, the Autumn equinox has rolled by and there is a chill in the air. By the time you read this hopefully the rush for petrol will be over and we can relax and turn our thoughts to cosy evenings in front of the fire. Covid booster jabs are starting to roll out, don’t forget to get yourself protected for the Winter season. It is vital we remain cautious to avoid a further wave of infections. Bonfire night approaches and with talk of a shortage of domestic fireworks this year, why not take advantage of one of the organized public displays, safer for everyone and far more spectacular than anything at home. Also remember to keep your pets safe and quiet at home during the festivities. Whatever you are up to, enjoy your October magazine. Keep safe and well. Jo – Editor.

POORS AND PLOUGHLET TRUST
A Friend Indeed
A Helping Hand this Christmas
We are always looking for volunteers at Age Concern North Norfolk (based in Sheringham) and you might like to become one of our befrienders for older people.
A Trust in Sheringham/Upper Sheringham is hoping to make Christmas a little bit easier for some families through the award of grants.
People in the town can apply for a Christmas Grant from the Poors and Ploughlet Trust, which was set up to give financial assistance to people residing in what was the Ancient Parish of Sheringham and Upper Sheringham.
Amanda, one of our befrienders, writes: “Growing up I’ve always enjoyed the company of older people and so I asked Age Concern North Norfolk at the beginning of the pandemic if any of their clients might welcome the occasional phone call. The following week I was put in touch with Peter (not his real name) who lived locally and who had experienced a close family bereavement the previous year. He had no local relatives other than a sister some 30 miles away.”
Grants are made each December to assist with the expenses of Christmas and to provide a festive “perk”.
Applicants must be in receipt of a “means tested benefit” such as Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit or a similar benefit.
The Trust is also able to give financial assistance to people who can show a particular need, for example those who might need household repairs, household equipment or aids towards a specific disability. The Trust can also help certain groups such as young and old peoples’ organisations and community groups.
“Yes, we do talk about the weather, but gradually we talked about other things. I always delight when Peter talks unprompted about his childhood, what led to his move to Norfolk, of times gone by, as well as plans for the coming week.”
The overall consideration is that the applicant has to satisfy the residential qualification previously mentioned and to show that there is a need for assistance.
The Charity is a long established Parish charity, is very well off and routinely does not spend all it's income. The Trustees would like to attract more applications, including for the Christmas Grants. These have for years been routinely provided to people who are entitled to means tested benefits and living within the ancient Parish boundaries.
To apply for a Christmas Grant please get in touch with the Secretary of the Trust, Vicky Hamey emailing info@sheringhampoors.org.uk or calling 07788 367612. The closing date for applications is 12th November.
“Having never met in person, we have developed a lovely friendship over the past 18 months, speaking every Saturday for a hearty conversation never less than 40 minutes.”

Bodham & Beckham Village Hall Events Bodham Craft Club
Don’t forget Crafters.. The Bodham Craft Club has begun meeting again in the Village Hall on alternate Wednesdays from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. The next meetings are on 6th and 20th October. The cost is £2.00 per meeting to include refreshments. Bring any crafts that you are interested in and socialise with like-minded people. Come along and see if it’s the sort of thing for you or please contact Helen Bruford on 588122 for more information.
The Craft club will not be meeting in November as Bodham & Beckham Village Hall will be undergoing refurbishment.
Bodham and Beckham Village Hall Film Club Wednesday 13th October – 7.00pm: One of the year’s best films “The Father” 2021 (12) starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. In an Academy Award winning performance, Anthony Hopkins plays the eponymous role of
a mischievous and highly independent man who, as he ages, refuses all assistance from his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman). Yet such help has become essential following Anne's decision to move to Paris with her partner. As Anne's father tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality. Review: No words needed; you simply just have to watch this. Very thought provoking.
Wednesday 27th October – 7.00pm: An extraordinary tale of ordinary love “Ordinary Love” 2020 (12) Starring Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson. Joan and Tom have been married for many years. There is an ease to their relationship which only comes from spending a lifetime together and a depth of love which expresses itself through tenderness and humour in equal part. When Joan is unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer, the course of her treatment
shines a light on their relationship as they are faced with the challenges that lie ahead and the prospect of what might happen if something were to happen to Joan. ORDINARY LOVE is a story about love, survival and the epic questions life throws at each and every one of us. Review: Deep and delicate movie with beautiful spirit, Liam Neeson is perfect for the role as he has that humanity in the eyes. Definitely worth watching.
The Village Hall will be closed from 1st November for three weeks for refurbishment.
Wednesday 24th November – 7.00pm: Breath-taking and beautiful “The Dawn Wall” 2018 (12) starring Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson. An unbelievable story of perseverance, free climber Tommy Caldwell and climbing partner Kevin Jorgeson attempt to scale the impossible 3000ft Dawn Wall of El Capitan. Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars. Fantastic feat of human endeavour.
for performers and audience alike to offset the cost of the venue hire.
Weybourne Folk Club Returns
We don’t have a bar, but you may bring your own drinks/snacks etc. if you wish. We are able to offer tea or coffee before 3 pm or during the interval. We have used the Village Hall very successfully in the past for our annual Folk Weekend. The 10th was to have been held in August 2020 which unfortunately had to be cancelled in common with most other festivals. Hopefully, we can now look forward to next year.
Weybourne Folk Club will be starting again at WEYBOURNE VILLAGE HALL on Sunday 17th October from 3 pm until 6 pm. Everyone is welcome, singers, musicians, poets, dancers etc. in the folk tradition including audience. Join in the choruses or just listen.
Prior to Covid we ran every month for 10 years from February 2010 until February 2020, first at the Ship Inn then at the Maltings Hotel. The intention now is to meet on the 3rd Sunday afternoon of each month from 3 pm until 6 pm. There will be a small charge of £1.00
Should you need any further details or information please contact Tony Baylis on 01263 588781 or e-mail tonyandcarmen@btinternet.com
WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offe fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.

In the Loop with Sheringham Town Council The Councillors at Sheringham Town Council are pleased to have the opportunity to continue with this column as a way of keeping residents up to date with news from your Town Council.
Climate Action
Members of Sheringham Town Council will be keenly watching the proceedings and outcome of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP26, which takes place in Glasgow from 31st October to 12th November. COP26 is seen by many as the most important global climate event since the Paris Agreement in 2015 which resulted in all major emitting countries committing to cut their climate pollution. You can find out more from this website https://ukcop26.org. Sheringham Town Council declared a Climate Emergency in June 2019 and approved a Climate Action Plan in July 2020 which seeks to put our climate at the heart of decision-making. The Climate Action Plan is wide-ranging with the aim of protecting the future of the town and ensuring that STC can implement its Principle on the Environment to ‘Engage in the protection of the environment and also ensure its sustainability, within the means of STC'. You will find the STC Climate Action Plan on the Sheringham Town Council website in the Governance General Policies section.
Sue Brisbane, our Deputy Mayor, and lead councillor on climate action, is working with officers at Norfolk County Council to gain their expertise on measures that can be implemented in the town to address the climate emergency including strategies for nature recovery, roadside nature reserves and promotion of cycling and walking.

Leaving a letter of wishes alongside your will Making a will is an important part of lifetime legal planning, but where should you set out your wishes for small sentimental gifts or for funeral arrangements? How will you explain the decisions you made in your will? These are some of the questions we are asked when people want to make a will for the first time or wish to make provision for something out of the ordinary.
For your will to be legally binding, it must be worded using specific legal terminology which does not leave much scope for creativity or explanations.
Alongside your will, you can write a letter of wishes in which you can express yourself in a more personal way. While such a letter is not legally binding, it does place a strong moral obligation for those involved in your will to follow your guidance.
Uses for a letter of wishes
Gifts One of the most common ways a letter of wishes is used is to leave small items, such as personal belongings, to certain beneficiaries without having to include specific gifts in your will. Provided your will references the separate letter of wishes,
this is a perfectly acceptable and even a common way of leaving such items.
Your chosen beneficiaries will not be legally entitled to the items, but your executors should ensure that they receive them unless there is a very good reason why your wishes cannot be honoured.
Funeral wishes Another popular use for a letter of wishes is to outline funeral wishes. A letter of wishes relating to your funeral can include preferences as to cremation or burial, instructions for your funeral service, or even who should be notified of your death and how they should be notified.
Explanations As well as offering the opportunity to express your wishes in relation to certain circumstances or specific gifts, a letter of wishes can also be used to explain why you have chosen to structure your will in the way you have.
For example, if you have left a greater share of your estate to one of your children or a charity, a letter of wishes can enable you to explain the decision more fully which may prevent or reduce discord between the
family after your death. It will also provide evidence of your views should a claim be made against your estate.
A letter of wishes can be changed as often as needed, without you having to review your will each time, saving you time and money.
How we can help A letter of wishes is a useful aid in ensuring that your voice can continue to be heard after you have died, however it is important to remember that it will not be legally binding, and it is equally important to understand when a letter of wishes is and is not appropriate.

CALLING ALL STROKE SURVIVORS and CARERS in North Norfolk
Would you like to join us for a social afternoon on Wednesdays twice a month. We meet at 2.15 pm for a 2.30 pm start in St.Andrews Church Hall on the Cromer Road, Sheringham, NR26 8SA, there is plenty of parking space. Sheringham market is usually open on Wednesdays, so you could make a day of it. This group started in 1983, and we had our 1st meeting since lockdown on September 8th 2021. We enjoyed a slide show by Brian Hedge called “The way we were” which is one of his most popular presentations. It brought back memories of childhood when at primary school we’d be given a ¾ pint of milk in a glass bottle, sometimes we had to thaw the milk out on the radiator in the winter months. Brian told us this milk ration started in 1946 and was paid for by the government. After our talk, we had our usual cuppa and biscuits followed by the raffle. We all receive a prize as we all take a little gift which we can spare. Then we have time to chat before going home around 3.45 pm. We enjoyed another meeting on 22nd September, the speaker the speaker was Brenda Hays with “A loade of ol’ squit”, our programme continues as shown below: 13th October Social afternoon 20th October Ursula Franklin (Dolls house miniatures) 3rd November TBA 17th November Brian Butcher (NTV) A Blickling river of time 15th December Christmas lunch at the Cliftonville, Cromer We are a friendly group and would love to see you.

If you’re interested in having a say in the way your local health services are delivered, getting involved with Sheringham practice’s PPG is a great place to start
After a long-enforced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to announce their first concert performance in 2 years. This will be a performance of Joseph Haydn’s magnificent oratorio The Creation.
The concert will take place in Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 13 November at 7:00 pm.
The performance will be conducted by musical director, David Ballard with soloists Rebecca Kaznowski, soprano (Gabriel); Daniel Bartlette, tenor (Uriel) and Dhilan Gnanadurai, bass (Raphael). Philip Adams will accompany on piano / organ.
The Creation dates from April 1798. It was inspired by Handel’s Messiah and Israel in Egypt, which Haydn had heard while visiting England. In the 1790s Haydn made two extended concert tours to London. Returning from the second of those trips in 1795, he brought with him a libretto telling the Biblical Creation story as related in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. Haydn conducted the oratorio’s premiere at Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna. Booking Information: Tickets cost £14 (£16 on the door),

EAAA Bless and Open Norwich Base During Air Ambulance Week
On Friday 10 September, East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) celebrated Air Ambulance Week 2021 with a special event in Norwich to mark the official opening of the charity’s newly extended and renovated 24/7 operational base and headquarters at Norwich Airport.
During the event, the base, which is called Helimed House, was also blessed as part of a multi-faith ceremony to wish the air ambulance crews and patients the utmost safety.
22 key figures representing the lifeblood of the charity, including former patients, donors, crew, a staff member and a volunteer, cut a yellow ribbon to officially open the base, which was completed earlier this year.
Building the state-of-the-art facility has been a long-term organisational goal, enabling the charity to operate a 24/7 service by air and road for the first time. The new headquarters will help future-proof the organisation, bring more teams under one roof and provide adequate rest and welfare facilities for the Anglia One crew. The new base also includes an immersive training suite for the clinical teams.
Matthew Jones, CEO of EAAA, said: “It was
wonderful to be able to officially open and celebrate the new base with so many of the people who have made this incredible facility possible. This building provides everything we need for our crews to do their jobs to the best of their ability and will do so for many, many years to come. We’re also very proud to now have a community hub and our own training and conference facilities here, to help us be an even bigger part of the local community which keeps us flying.
“Developing the base was an enormous project and long-term goal of ours and was financed through lots of very generous gifts left to the
charity in supporter’s wills over recent years. These gifts have been used to safeguard the future of our operation across Norfolk and East Anglia and we’re incredibly grateful to now have such a world-class facility to call our home in Norfolk.”
One of the significant gifts left to the charity which made the new base possible included the sale of a 1964 Ferrari Nembo Spider, which was also present at the event to mark the special occasion. The Ferrari belonged to the late racing driver and motor enthusiast Richard Allen, who passed away in 2016. The sale of the car at auction generated over £500,000 which was used to purchase the land for the building. Members of the Allen family were present at the base opening to see the impact of this gesture during what was also National Remember a Charity Week; a week dedicated to promoting and celebrating the impact that gifts in wills can have for charities.

Safe and effective Laser Hair Removal at the Coltishall Clinic
For many men and women, unwanted hair can be a nightmare. Getting rid of it can be painful. Until now the only options for removing unwanted hair were smelly hair removal creams, sharp razors, stinging wax or painful electrolysis needles. Our advanced approach to beautiful skin provides the ultimate solution. Now, men and women alike will be pleased with the results made possible by our Laser Hair Removal process.
What is the Laser Hair Removal process? Laser Hair Removal uses high-energy lasers to gently remove unwanted hair, putting an end to routine shaving and waxing. Because the laser treats more than one hair at a time, it is possible to treat larger areas such as the back, shoulders, arms, legs and face. Laser treatments leave your skin looking and feeling smoother and silkier. Best of all, Laser Hair Removal treatments are a safe, fast, gentle and effective alternative method for hair removal.
patient depending on skin and hair colour.
Removing hair does not make it grow back thicker, darker or quicker. The opposite is usually the case. The laser may cause hair to come back slower and thinner.
What is unique about Coltishall Clinic? We have several laser devices available so we can choose a laser based on your unique needs. We have many years of experience with more than 24000 successful treatments.
You can find out more information at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 01603 736487 to book an appointment.
Chocks Away!
New Farm Aviation Heritage Group Museum at Frettenham is now opening on Sundays twice monthly through until December from 10am to 4pm and entry is free of charge.
What are the benefits of Laser Hair Removal? • Larger areas may be treated using lasers than with electrolysis, waxing or tweezing. • It combines the speed of shaving with the lasting results. • Laser Hair Removal is effective on almost any area of the body where smoother, younger, hair-free skin is desired.
How many treatments will I need? The number of treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depends on the area you wish to have treated, the hair density and your hair’s growth cycle. Your hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth. Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism all play a part in your hair’s location, thickness and resilience.
The laser slows the growing capacity of follicles in the growth cycle at the time of the treatment. Since some hair follicles may enter their growth cycle after your treatment, multiple treatments may be required to deliver optimal results. Treatment results will vary from patient to
A lot of work was undertaken throughout the lockdown months, the layout has been altered, the displays extended, and we now have a tea room serving a selection of cakes, sausage rolls, ice creams, and hot and cold drinks. There is also a sales section stocking books, jigsaw puzzles, model cars, parts from B24 planes and 50 calibre inert ammunition. There is an especially large selection of aviation books, military, WWII, a few WWI, but also some novels, gardening and cookery books.

Keeping your pet smiling! We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over three years old.
Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. Caught early gingivitis can be reversed, however, over time it progresses to periodontitis with tooth loss and infections of the tooth, gum and jaw bone, with a risk of infection spreading to other organs via the bloodstream.
Dental disease in cats poses particular challenges as they also suffer from chronic gingivostomatitis, a disease where inflammation spreads from the gums to the rest of the mouth. In this condition the body mounts an over-exaggerated immune response to tartar and plaque causing
painful inflammation. Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and immunosuppression, and should be discussed with your vet. Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum) causing teeth to fracture. Advanced lesions can be detected by visual inspection, however, early lesions are very painful but only detected by specialised dental x-ray and therefore dental xrays are always recommended.
When detected early dental disease can often be treated with brushing, however, as disease progresses treatment requires antibiotics, scale and polishing and even extractions. Not all dental treatments are the same and dental treatment should involve a thorough examination
178 groups of horses and riders, including a group from Briston near Holt, took part in a nationwide Pass Wide and Slow Awareness Campaign this weekend.

event to make drivers aware of the need to pass horses wide and slow, whether they are being ridden or in a cart. Although most drivers already do this, some may not be aware, and this of course is in the Highway Code, so our aim is to highlight the problem horse riders have. Most horses that are out on the roads are traffic wise, but horses can be unpredictable, and it could just take a dog or child running towards the horses behind a hedge, or someone starting up a lawn mower, causing the horse to spook into the path of passing traffic. Not only is there the potential injury to horse and rider, but the average horse weighs around half a ton so could cause considerable damage to the vehicle. In the last twelve months 1,037 incidents have been reported to the British Horse Society. 80 horses have died, and 1 person was killed. 81% of incidents occurred because cars passed to closely to horses and 40% because vehicles passed by too quickly. These are of course only the incidents reported so the number is probably much higher. Danita wished to thank all those who took part, the Pavillion for allowing the horses to meet at the Recreation Ground, The Explorers Bar for laying on a BBQ at the end, SJR Photography for the amazing photos and all the people who came out to wave them off, as well as all the patient drivers who were held up on their way. The national campaign is an annual event, and it is hoped that next year more groups from Norfolk will participate.

under general anaesthesia where every tooth is examined visually and with a special probe. Dental X-rays should be performed to assess the extent of disease below the gum line in the root / socket area as this is invisible to the naked eye. These investigations determine the extent of disease and ideal treatment options. At Toll Barn we have a fully equipped dental suite including dental x-ray and our in-house vets have a particular interest in dentistry and are always happy to discuss treatment and prevention options for your pet.

Summer Notes from the Commons
It was not the long hot summer that was expected although there were a few hot and sunny days among a large number of very cloudy ones. Mark Clements and I recorded the wildlife most days and the following are some of the highlights.
July) and Purple Hairstreak (18 July) were new for the year and a moth trap ‘captured’ a Small Elephant Hawkmoth, a species that has not been recorded since 2012. A Little Egret was noted heading east (19 July) and the The month of June strange opened with a hairy-eyed Lesser Whitethroat hoverfly and the day-flying Eristalinus Mother Shipton sepulchralis moth present (01 was present June) and was (21 July). Four followed by Brown Red Kites headed Argus (02 June) and west (22 July) and a Cockchafer. Mark a female Pantaloon spotted another Bee (24 July) was day-flying moth, collecting pollen Pantaloon Bee the Lattice Heath from Cat’s-ear. (03 June) and a number of Marsh Click Beetles These bees are so-called because of the were seen as well as the Bracken Sawfly. The over-sized, bright yellow pollen baskets first Keeled Skimmers were ‘on the wing’ (07 they have on their hind legs. In Norfolk it June) and a Reed Warbler was singing (08 is probably at its northernmost range. A SixJune). Three Red Kites passed over heading spot Burnet moth was seen (29 July). This is east and a Roe Deer was spotted (09 June). again an uncommon occurrence for the area; A Hobby was noted heading east and the first however, they are plentiful around the cliff-top Large Skipper of the season was seen (16 near Beeston Bump. Its caterpillar’s food plant June). Later that night a Nightjar was heard is Common Bird’s-foot Trefoil. ‘churring’ – the distinctive sound has been likened to the sound of a two-stroke motor cycle engine. The bird is hard to locate from its ‘churring’ as they are skilled ventriloquists. The very striking hoverfly, Volucella inflata, was found (21 June) and Mark spotted a Peregrine (22 June) and a male Banded Demoiselle. A Deadly Nightshade plant was found (24 June) as was a female Black-tailed Skimmer, a dragonfly that is not often seen on the Common. Another Hobby passed over the area (29 June) as did a Fulmar.
An Emerald Damselfly was found at the small pond (02 July) and a Banded General (Soldierfly) was seen the following day (03 July). Mark saw another Hobby (05 July) and a Blackneck moth was found. A Norfolk Wildlife Trust walk, celebrating Commons took place (07 July) and Bog Bush Crickets were seen as well as Bee and Marsh Fragrant Orchids. The first White-letter Hairstreaks appeared (12 July) and a male Black-tailed Skimmer was noted. A male Silver-washed Fritillary (17
Southern Emerald Damselfly
A White-letter Hairstreak was seen nectaring on Bramble at the north end of the Common by some scrubby Elms (02 August). Elm is the food plant for this butterfly’s larvae and it has been long suspected that the butterfly should be found in this area so it was great to see one. Also in this area of scrubby Elms a Willow Emerald Damselfy was noted (06 August).

White-letter Hairstreak
A Tortoise Shieldbug was found by Mark (10 August) and two male Banded Demoiselles were noted. The first Bee-wolf of the year was present (15 August). The females of this species of solitary wasp attack Honey Bees and carry them off to underground nests, where several paralysed bees will be placed with an egg. On hatching the wasp larva will then eat the prey alive! Another insect with a gruesome life was also noted (17 August). This is the large bumblebee-sized parasitic fly Tachina grossa, which parasitizes moth larvae – it lays its egg inside a living caterpillar and then on hatching eats it from the inside, eventually killing it. A Raven and Little Egret were seen by Mark crossing over the Common (19 August) and later that day a female Southern Emerald Damselfly was found on the central marsh. This was a first for the Common of this rare insect from the Continent. It is generally considered a migrant from the Netherlands and was first recorded in Norfolk at Winterton in 2002. The following day (20 August) a Scarce Emerald Damselfly was reported by Simon Chidwick, who also observed two Green Sandpipers overflying. A flock of 15 Greenshank were noted overflying southwest (23 August) and later in the week (29 August) one of the most beautiful and scarce hoverflies turned up, Sericomyia superbiens, which is a bumblebee mimic. Apart from a limited distribution in Norfolk it is generally found in the north and west of the country.
Despite being a somewhat dull summer there has been quite a few good records and to keep up to date with the sightings please visit www.beestoncommon.org.uk for daily sightings and images.

Old Fashioned Parkin I remember being given this cake as a child on bonfire night along with those teeth-cracking toffee apples.
Parkin originated in the North of England. Made with oats, traditionally it is baked after the oat harvest in early November and so became associated with bonfire night.
Both Yorkshire and Lancashire claim it as their own, but whatever the roots of this cake, it strikes the right note for a spicy, warming treat at this time of year. Make it well ahead of the time you want it as the cake improves in both taste and texture up to a week after it is made.
Ingredients 175g black treacle 150g butter 100g dark muscovado sugar 175g plain flour 2 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp grated nutmeg 275g porridge oats 1 large egg 150ml milk 1 tsp bicarb of soda
Method Preheat your oven to 180c. grease and line a square 18cm (7”) deep cake tin.
Put the treacle, butter and sugar in a saucepan over a low heat and melt together until everything has dissolved, stirring constantly. Set aside to cool.
Meanwhile, sift the flour and spices into a large mixing bowl, add the oats. In another bowl, whisk up the egg and milk and add the bicarb of soda.
Now add this to the dry ingredients along with the treacle mixture and mix well.
Pour the mixture into your prepared tin and bake in the middle of the oven for about an
hour, until firm to the touch.
Leave to cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then turn out, remove the baking paper and leave on the rack to cool completely.
When cool, wrap in parchment paper and store in an airtight tin for up to a week before cutting into squares. Jo – editor.
What a Champ!
These little puffy morsels are scrumptious and so moreish you need to make a decent sized batch as they will be coming back for more. What’s also great is that they are super economical to make too and are a fabulous way to use up leftover mash. Even confirmed carnivores will be chomping on these.
I’m always on the lookout for new recipes and ways to tweak existing ones, and in the quest to feed vegetarians with delicious buffet food have hit upon a winner. I personally can’t pass by a plate of sausage rolls without diving in but was keen to try and come up with a vegetarian alternative that is just as tempting.
I find that generally the cheese and onion equivalent is dry and lacking in substance, so have used a delicious savoury cheesy mash potato filling to stuff the rolls with, resulting in what is essentially Irish champ in pastry!
Champ Rolls Medium pan of Potatoes (use old potatoes suitable for mashing) Small pack garlic and herb soft cheese A little milk for mashing Bunch spring onions, finely chopped Strong cheddar cheese 2 packs ready rolled puff pastry I egg mixed with a little milk
Boil the potatoes until soft, then drain and leave with the lid off to dry a little.
Gently fry the spring onions for about 5 mins with a little olive oil then set aside.
Whilst the potatoes are still hot, mash with a
little milk and the garlic and herb cheese until smooth and creamy (don’t use too much milk, you want a good firm mash).
Add in the cooked onions and season the mash well then add a couple of good handfuls of grated strong cheddar cheese and stir in. Set aside to cool.
Once cool enough to handle place small spoons of mash in a sausage shape along a long piece of rolled out clingfilm and wrap up into a long sausage, pinching the ends.
Place in fridge to harden up for at least a couple of hours.
Keep the pastry on the greaseproof paper that it comes wrapped in and open out. Cut in half lengthways and use the egg mixture to wet one long side.
Unwrap the potato filling and place in the middle of the pastry and roll over to cover the filling, pressing down the wet edge to seal the filling in.
To book call 01263 512412
Cut into the size of roll you want, gently press a fork into the top of each roll and brush a little egg mixture over the tops.
Keep on the greaseproof paper, and place this onto a baking sheet.
Repeat with the rest of the pastry and place into a preheated oven on 180° for approx. 15 mins.
Serve immediately.

Golden Time for Sam
Sam Watts, lead coach of North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club, led by example by competing himself by competing himself in the Scottish National Short Course Masters & Senior Age Group Championship and what a competition he had!
The event took place at Tollcross Park Leisure Centre Glasgow, under the auspices of Swim Scotland and swam three events in the 35-39 masters age group category. This was Sam's first competition in over two years.
His best result by far was his 200m freestyle in which he came first in a time of 2.12.72 - a full two seconds ahead of his nearest rival.
Sam was also runner up in the 400m freestyle. scoring 4.50.73 but explained that it was a hard-fought race. "This was a tough race for two reasons. I had done the 100m only 20 minutes before this race and it’s never easy to use two different energy systems in two very different races." However, after he swam the 100m, Sam had very mixed emotions and although he came sixth, he was, on the other hand, happy for now to record his second-best time ever of 1.00.51 He now wants to go on and break a minute over the distance. "I know that I’m capable of it and I will have another chance when I compete again in October" added Sam.

Woman refused 5.00pm finish awarded £185,000 by Employment Tribunal A mother, who was told that she could not work flexible hours by her employer, has been awarded a £185,000 payout by the Employment Tribunal.
Alice Thompson was a former estate agent and had a successful career for 10 years, prior to falling pregnant in 2018. After returning from maternity leave, she had asked her employer if she could work a four-day week and leave at 5.00pm, rather than 6.00pm, to enable her to pick her daughter up from nursery. Her employer refused her request on the basis that they could not afford for her to work shorter hours.
According to Thompson, her employer did not "seriously consider" her request and would not consider alternative flexible working options, with Thompson stating she was "shut down", "not listened to" and "not considered". She eventually resigned.
Thompson issued proceedings in the Employment Tribunal and successfully pleaded indirect sex discrimination on the basis that her employer's refusal to consider her flexible working request put her at a particular disadvantage because of her sex.Thompson was awarded just under £185,000 in respect of loss of earnings, pension contributions, injury to feelings and interest.

Hedgehog Haven
Many employees will make flexible working requests after returning from maternity or paternity leave and it is important for employees to know their rights in relation to making flexible working requests and for employers to be aware of their options when considering flexible working requests made by employers.
It's been a very busy summer with lots of hoglets coming into care with the mother disappearing after nests being disturbed, or RTA, with mild spell it will mean that more hoglets will be being born late in the season, please keep an eye out for these little juveniles, as they will need to build up their weight quickly before the cold weather sets in.
It is therefore essential for employers and employees to seek independent legal advice at the earliest opportunity to ensure that requests are handled in the correct manner and to minimise the risk of protracted and costly litigation.

Panto beanstalk points the way back to post-lockdown life
A panto character and his magical beanstalk will help show people the way up and out of any lingering lockdown lows.
Jack and the Beanstalk running at Sheringham Little Theatre will chart the youngster’s journey from being trapped in the house with his trying-to-be-trendy mum to rediscovering the outside world, adventure and romance. It begins on Freedom Day and takes them up the beanstalk to confront the evil giant.
Writer and director Nick Earnshaw, the venue’s regular panto creator, said: “There will be all the usual panto magic, music and comedy but with a topical message of trying to show people they can once again get out and enjoy themselves.” He added that his training with Panto legend Eric Potts – a nationallyacclaimed writer, director and dame in festive fun across the UK - had helped him shape his own panto writing style. “One piece of advice that always has helped is using the Ladybird book stories as a base to make sure you get the storytelling elements clear within the show and then add a modern twist to the classic story,” Nick said.
The show will follow the pattern of last year’s festive show Rapunzel, using a smaller cast, for a shorter concentrated hour long show full
of action, song, dance, gags and special effects. Nick added:” The format was forced on is last year by Covid, but it worked, so we are repeating it and building on its success.” It will again by streamed to primary schools nationwide thanks to a link up with the Norfolk Music Hub and educational music experts Charanga at a special December 16 performance in partner venue St George’s Theatre, Great Yarmouth. Last year the show was seen by more than 200,000 pupils across the UK, who will learn the songs beforehand and be encouraged to dress up on the day of the live screening.
Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “Our panto was a real boost for locked down children last year, and the only way they could see live festive fun. Things have eased and changed but we know some people are still struggling to regain their old lives - and we hope this year’s fun show will help, with a positive message and a chance to see the show in our socially- distanced seating.”
The 160-seater theatre is still only using 100 of them, and families wanting extra space should call the box office to discuss their booking.
Jack, played by Charlie Randall from Aylsham, has been educated through home schooling and “entertained” by on line dances by his embarrassing mum Dame TikTok (Harry Wyatt from North Walsham). Colin the family cow is

played by Ollie Westlake from Southrepps. Jack’s love interest is Jill Weaver (Emma Riches from Great Yarmouth who was Rapunzel last year).
The live theatre panto shows are: St Georges – December 11-19 (1pm and 5pm). Little Theatre December 21-23 (1pm and 5pm), Christmas Eve at 10am and 1pm and back to 1pm and 5pm for December 26-31. For tickets and prices visit www.stgeorgestheatre.com or call 01493 331484 or 01263 822347 www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

North East Norfolk Bird Club “The first bird club in the country to introduce Green Badge Eco-Awards to its members.”
Although we have held some very successful talks over Zoom online; it’s been 19 months since our last indoor bird club meeting. We were delighted to welcome around 60 members throughout the day, at our first in-person event of 2021. We held a drop-in Summer Social Picnic at the wonderful Trimingham Village Hall.
As part of a full day’s programme, the day started with a walk to Temple Wood to meet the owner, club member Eddie Anderson. He was a brilliant and informative guide and the highlight was a kingfisher on the lake.
The weather was glorious and next up, was moth identification with Greg Bond at the hall. He helped a large gathering to enjoy the contents of a trap set up overnight. These fascinating creatures come in an impressive variety of sizes and colours.
club coastal area from Weybourne to Happisburgh. Teams set up telescopes and time record sea birds simultaneously to provide detailed records of flight times and numbers of birds around the coast on a particular day.

Thanks to the modern and efficient technology available at the hall, this event was livestreamed to members at home.
To my knowledge we are the first bird club in the country to create Green Badge Eco-Awards for its members. These were introduced after lockdown discussions to promote local patch The usual club high standard of refreshments, birding in the wake of heightened awareness of including a vast array of cakes; was available the impacts of climate change. It was observed in the hall throughout the day. that members were continuing to submit their A myth busting talk was held on “Seawatching” bird records to the excellent club website, after to encourage members to take part in the going on foot or on bicycle from home to keep annual forthcoming event at sites around our up the daily exercise. There is a Green Eco-Award badge and certificate for seeing 75 different bird species inland or 100 at coastal sites. The Super Green Eco- Award badge and certificate is achieved with 125 inland species or 175 coastal. We were proud to see our IS YOUR CONSERVATORY TOO HOT IN THE SUMMER & TOO COLD IN Vice President hand THE WINTER? out the first ever Eco-awards to 12 members.
(NENBC)
Also presented, was the first of our new Purple Badges – our NENBC Making a Difference Award. These are awarded in recognition of significant activities to encourage and share the enjoyment of birdwatching, including promoting the conservation of birds and wildlife within the NENBC area or making an exceptional contribution to club life. Our first recipient, Phil Hall (first club President) received his badge and certificate on the day but our second recipient, John Wagstaff, known to many as the warden of Kelling Heath; was unable to make it to the event so we will be popping round to visit him soon.
The afternoon walk with naturalist Frances Farrow, was really a short stroll along some green lanes and quiet roads near Trimingham Village Hall. The object was to look at the general natural history with particular emphasis on wildflowers and insects. In the event insects were very scarce but some interesting plants were found. Francis clearly has a fantastic eye for detail and spotted Tansy Flower Galls. Members also looked at a Robin’s Pin-cushion, which is a gall of Dog Rose, caused by a small gall-wasp.
Common buzzard by Mark Clements
Birdwatchers throughout the day recorded 34 species and a record count of 203 common buzzards; visible migration at its best!
Purchases from our second-hand book stall made £87 and the raffle raised £125 which we are donating to the sensory garden at Trimingham Village Hall.
Many comments at the end of the day included how marvellous the hall and grounds are for events and we hope to use it again soon.

New East of England public involvement group set up for people with hearing loss People with hearing conditions from across East Anglia are being invited to join a new group to help run research and change clinical service development at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH). The Hearing Services research team at CUH has launched the Hearing Loss Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Group to help patients give their views on how research is carried out and how hearing services could be improved for patients. The Group is open to people from across the region who have hearing loss and related conditions. People with tinnitus and balance problems, and those who wear hearing devices such as cochlear implants are also invited to join the group, alongside carers for people with hearing conditions. Members of the Group will take part in a number of ways, including giving feedback on how research is designed and carried out, and discussing ways to improve the experience of people taking part in studies. They will also help staff find ways to make positive changes to the department itself, such as improvements to services and facilities. The Hearing Loss PPI Group will meet twice a year online, via Zoom, with monthly email updates sent by the team. No experience is necessary to join the group, but members need to be willing to share their views. Sophie McKenny, Senior Research Nurse at the Centre, who has set up the group, said: “We carry out research here to improve treatments and care for patients with hearing loss, and we feel it’s

Ruth Meyer, 68, a qualified Tour Guide from Cambridge, was the first person to sign up to the group. Ruth has had hearing loss in one ear since 2016 due to a non-cancerous brain tumour. She said: “I’ve received an immense amount from the NHS over the years, and the NHS care I received when I was being treated for the tumour was outstanding. I feel that I should be prepared to make a contribution in recognition of this, so it’s not really that I needed to think hard about whether to join, it was more a case of thinking ‘why wouldn’t I?!’”

Last time, I mention Bobbie and Leo, the two Ragdoll cats recently handed in as strays. During our discussion with our friends from Head Office we learned that another local branch had also taken in several Ragdoll cats and kittens, and they believed that they had been dumped by a breeder. This will be looked at closely to see if there is any connection with our two boys. A very worrying thought. Two other Bobbie strays taken in recently are Edna, a lovely old girl who had been living under a car for some time and Mabel a three-legged cat with thyroid problems found by the side of the road at Pretty Corner. Both these cats were in very poor condition. Edna has now had most of her teeth extracted and is gradually gaining weight as is Mabel who is very good taking her medication. Lots of TLC, a nice warm bed to cuddle up in and good food will help these lovely old cats to enjoy life once more.
North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Since the last article we have had a visit from two members of Head Office who are responsible for ensuring we have the support we need and to ensure our cats are kept in accordance with Cats Protection policies and guidelines. They were due to visit just before lockdown so were very interested to learn that life for cats in our care had not been unduly affected.
We were able to take them to see some of the cats in care and to check that our pens were up to the required standard. Several of the cats are in care with Lesley, who fosters cats for us in her cattery at Hemsby, so a visit there was top of the list. They were both very impressed with the cattery, the amount of space each of the beautiful pens has with solid walls, tiled floors and underfloor heating. Each pen has its own individual run which allows them to see what is happening outside. Because they have solid surfaces it is also very easy to keep them clean, especially important when new residents arrive or should there ever be a cat with an infectious disease.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
We then went to Caroline’s to see her four lovely PVC pens, although there was a challenge here as telegraph poles in her narrow lane were being changed and the road was closed so we had to leave the cars and walk. We were advised that the pens were of the standard required as advised in the recent guidelines issued by ADCH. This is an important issue as Cats Protection, along with other like-minded charities, are hoping to see all animal charities registered with local councils and encouraged to adopt the standards that have been issued by ADCH. Apparently, this may happen in Scotland shortly and they believe once introduced there, England, Wales and Northern Ireland will follow. This can only be of benefit to all cats that are taken into care by registered charities and should ensure that the level of care they receive is of the same high standard.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve basis, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

North Norfolk Beach Runner Robbie Britton to Release 1001 Running Tips Guide
British ultra-marathon runner and member of the North Norfolk Beach Runners, Robbie Briton, is publishing an informative and light-hearted guide of 1001 Running Tips this november. Written for beginners and experienced runners alike, the guide will be filled with helpful knowledge from training plans, nutrition and kit, to music, running with your dog, racing and fell running.
Britton said, ‘Writing the book the thought that kept going through my head was “good advice doesn’t have to be boring”, so hopefully there’s a good mix of laughter and sage advice in equal measure. Over the years, especially as a marathoner and ultra-runner, you have to go through the ups and downs of your running career and try to learn from all of it. These tips are a combination of lessons learned from the successes in my running and coaching, but also the mistakes as well. If they can help readers avoid a couple mistakes themselves then I’ll be happy.’
Britton’s achievements include racing from 3,000 metres up to 261 kilometres in one single day, running a marathon in 2:29 and coaching multiple race-winning and record-breaking athletes in the ultra-distance world. The co-owner of Fast Running, with an MSc in Performance Coaching and already an accomplished writer, his work has also appeared in Runner’s World, Trail Running, Men’s Running and The Guardian, among others.
500 Long Days!
It has been over 20 months since the Sheringham & District Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association were able to last meet but now we are back doing what we do best; socialising and raising funds for a worthy charity. Our round of activities started with mounting Wings Appeal collections in Cromer, Holt and Sheringham, followed a couple of days later by 41 Members and Guests meeting at the Pheasant Hotel in Kelling for Afternoon Tea and other light refreshments!
Our one-day street collection in Cromer, Holt and Sheringham raised £690 – thank you to all who contributed.

Sheringham BeachLife Returns with Real Life Activities
Sheringham BeachLife returned in August, in a modified form, and once again enthralled scores of children and young people during one of the closing weeks of the summer holidays.
The popular activity and outreach week was restricted to an on-line offering in 2020, including a virtual BeachLife video, which also featured in Sheringham’s virtual carnival offering, but BeachLife made a comeback this year with digital broadcasts in the mornings, activity packs, and family activities in the afternoons or early evenings, including a visit from renowned magician Steve Legg on the last day.
Each day started with a virtual “Beach Special” broadcast at 10.30am on the BeachLife You Tube channel, with challenges, songs, drama, the medley and, of course, the gunge tank.
Tuesday afternoon saw a return of the popular Tide Fight, where around 80 people gathered in family groups to build defences from sand and stones in the hope that the sea would not be able to demolish them. Despite the inevitable triumph by the sea, prizes and trophies were awarded for most creative structure, most determined team and, of course, the last structure to fall.

The youngsters returned to the beach on the Wednesday afternoon for sand sculptures and the reproduction of a large-scale version of the BeachLife logo using stones and other beach material. Strong northerly winds did not deter the crowd of around 70 people who gathered, most of whom battled the elements in a tightly fought contest. Trophies and prizes were awarded in three age groups, including the adult award which went to Peter Skivington with a very creditable score of 50.
The audience of around 125 people on the Leas in Sheringham laughed their way through over an hour of magic tricks and humour, but the Christian
Lighthouse Community Church, was one of the organisers. He said, “We’re really pleased to have been able to offer both online as well as “in person” activities as part of this year’s BeachLife. The interactive YouTube Beach Specials were popular, and we had great fun for all ages in the afternoon events, culminating in a brilliantly creative message of God’s love through Steve Legg’s comedy and magic on the Friday afternoon at the Leas.
