Sheringham, Holt and Weybourne saw the long awaited return of the 1940s weekend on the 17th and 18th of September.

Sheringham High Street was transformed with taped up windows, Union Jack bunting, and stunning displays of period clothes and ephemera Parking was scarce, but vintage buses, working as a park and ride service from Cookie’s Field, offered the opportunity for many more to attend the event There was a costume parade at 4pm on the Saturday

Thousands of attendees showed up to the weekend appropriately attired A dizzying variety of civilian and military outfits were on display: Navy Commanders, and Army Officers in full military regalia, men in tweed suits, bow ties and fedoras, dames complete with victory rolls, pearls and A line skirts and of course Rosie the Riveter look a likes with jumpsuits and red spotted bandanas

Across the towns, 1940s period music from performers such as The Skyliner Big Band, The Knightingales and Sarah Mai resounded throughout the

weekend

Weybourne Station provided live music from The Swingtones and others

Weybourne also offered period food and drink at the Station Buffett and exhibited a variety of military camps At the exhibition site next to Holt Station visitors could feast their eyes on dozens of military vehicles, vintage cars, and of course the full size Spitfire replica

This year ’s event had an unusual poignancy due to the recent passing of the Queen, and there were many sincere tributes to the late monarch on display across the towns

North Norfolk Railway once again organised the event, and made sure that activities ran in cooperation with volunteers and local councils Steam trains ran every half hour, and conveyed thousands of passengers over the two days The event has come a long way since it was debuted as a one off event over 20 years ago, and certainly shows no signs of slowing down

for the 2023 event are already underway

We

A Note from the edi

When I wrote this piece last month, little did I by the time I wrote again we would have lost o queen of 70 years and have a new king

However, 100 grams of dark chocolate

many

100 grams of spinach, prunes,

contains more than 700 compounds that are good for

body

can help reduce food cravings? I know which I would prefer and a small piece of dark chocolate is recommended in delaying the onset of dementia

Good nutrition is vital for people living with dementia who can have short attention spans, get bored easily and not recognise the signs of hunger and thirst Their tastes can change and they may forget when they have eaten Malnutrition is present in 29% of people with dementia so it is important to provide high nutrient items such as cheese, cream and puddings, little and often.

The whole country has gone through so many emotions, from shock and grief to final acceptance We have all witnessed the extraordinary scenes of Her Majesty’s return journey from Scotland to her final resting place at Windsor Castle The queues lining the Thames to pay their respects and the pageantry of the state funeral, observed by the whole world

There have been so many personal stories of how Queen Elizabeth touched people’s lives and demonstrations of how much she meant to her subjects We would like to add our condolences to the royal family and thank Her Majesty for her long and dedicated service to this country and beyond

Rest in peace Your Majesty

God save the King

Warm Welcome to father Peter

The Catholic Parish of Our Lady and St Joseph Sheringham and Cromer are delighted to welcome our new priest Father Peter Wygnanski, as he succeeds Father James Fyfe who has retired to Kent

Father Peter, 32, grew up in Cambridge and has a background in Engineering and Electronics and worked in London before following his vocation and studying in Rome for 8 years Father Peter is looking forward to working with his Parish and the local community as well as other local churches and clergy As a passionate musician, Father Peter is especially pleased to be in North Norfolk, a part of the country with such a rich musical tradition.

Arriving in Sheringham having completed post graduate studies of Theology in Rome, Father Peter is currently working on a PhD, researching novel ways for Christian believers to understand their relationship with humanity’s future He hopes his study might offer opportunities for parishioners and local communities to find out more about the teaching of the Catholic Church and encourage debate and participation He is involved with the Diocesan Youth Team and hopes to be able to develop this as he settles into his new role

For more information about the Parish including times of services in Cromer, Holt and Sheringham, please see the website www.ourladyandstjoseph.info

Weybourne WI ‘Say Cheese’

Celia Howe, President, welcomed 26 members and three visitors to the village hall on Wednesday 7th September for the meeting of Weybourne WI

Our speaker was Charlie Hodson, owner of Hodson & Co, The Cheese Room and Delicatessen in Aylsham Charlie had brought along a wonderful display of products to illustrate his talk

He began by describing his early life in France, where he learnt to cook as a young boy He later moved to East Dereham with his parents Following unsuccessful periods at Agricultural College and in the Royal Marines, he decided to move to London and train to be a chef After working abroad for a while, he moved back to the UK and bought pubs, restaurants and a hotel He made the decision to close his businesses just before the first lockdown

Following a period of ill health, he opened the Cheese Room in August 2020 and Hodson & Co has developed into a very suc cessful business since then

He stocks a wide variety of local products, and he said his aim is to showcase how amazing Nor folk produce is One of his spe cialities is to construct a wedding cake from rounds of cheese and he demonstrated this to us, using a wooden board as a base with fresh flowers, dried orange slices and raffia as decoration It was very effective Members then sampled a smoked brie, which was delicious! Charlie is passionate about providing a great service to the local community and stressed the importance of using High Street shops, to stop them gradually disappearing

The vote of thanks was given by Celia Howe After the meeting was closed, members eagerly made some purchases from the display

Although open most days during the season, which began on 22nd April, the PCSG was open for more hours in total than the FLM, which accounts for its larger number of visitors

Our popular Coffee Mornings with a talk continue. These are held on the last Thursday of the month at St Joseph’s Church Hall The speaker for October will be Wells Harbour Master Bob Smith describing his work and life in Wells in general In November we welcome Peggy Williams revealing how she and her husband appeared in an episode of the television programme Location, Location, Location when they bought their Sheringham home. Full details are on our website: sheringhamsociety com

Rossini: Fine tunes and glittering young soloists

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society kick off their 2022 23 season in St Peter ’s Parish Church, Sheringham on Saturday 12 November at 7 00 pm with a fine example of Rossini’s choral music: Petite Messe Solennelle

Despite its title this work is neither “petite” or “solemn”! What it does have is many fine tunes brought to you by the choir with two accompanists and a glittering cast of early career professionals The soloists will be Rebecca Kaznowski (soprano), Maria Willis (mezzo soprano), James Beddoe (tenor) and Alex Bower Brown (bass)

The performance will be conducted by David Ballard and accompanied by Philip Adams (organ) and William Falconer (piano)

The mass was written in 1863, possibly at the request of Count Alexis Pillet Will for his wife Louise to whom it is dedicated The composer, who had retired from composing operas more than 30 years before, described it as “the last of my péchés de vieillesse” (sins of my old age)

This is the Society’s 90th Anniversary season having been formed in 1933 The choir will mark its Emerald Anniversary in April 2023 with a concert celebrating the changes in choral music over the last 90 years.

Booking Information: Tickets cost £14 (advance), £16 on the door, under 18s free from the box office at Sheringham Little Theatre

Telephone 01263 822347 or online at sheringhamlittletheatre com

Tickets also available from North Norfolk Visitor Centre, Louden Road, Cromer for personal callers only

Cromer Hospital

The new Cromer hospital which opened in 2012 was funded by legacies from Sagle Bernstein, whose sister was cared for by the hospital, and former patient Phyllis Cox, who was so impressed with the care she received there in the 1950s, made arrangements for the hospital to receive her £1 4m estate Her husband had passed away before her and they did not have any children

Sagle Bernstein lived in Cromer with her sister Muriel Thoms, and left £11 4m as a thank you for the care Mrs Thoms received at the hospital before she died in 1998

Charitable gifts are a great option for those without close family

If you no longer have any close family or friends, you might not want your money to end up with distant relatives you never speak to or see If you find yourself in this situation, a gift

If you die without a will then the predetermined intestacy rules apply, and these never provide for money to pass to charity Intestacy will mean all your assets end up being left to the Crown.

Creating a lasting personal legacy with charitable gifts

In Sagle Bernstein’s case, her sizeable donation was made to Cromer Hospital for the general benefit of Cromer and its residents The sisters are remembered at the hospital with the minor injuries unit (MIU) being named after Mrs Bernstein and the day procedure unit after Mrs Thoms Paintings by Mrs Bernstein are also hung in the new building. The Audiology Unit on the first floor has been named after Phyllis Cox

The effect of charitable giving on inheritance tax

For many, tax saving is not the key consideration for leaving sums to charity, but it is usually a welcome side effect

Any gifts you leave to charity in your will pass

free of inheritance tax, as charities count as exempt beneficiaries This reduces the value of your estate by the amount of the gift before any tax free allowances are taken into account, leaving a smaller pot to fall subject to inheritance tax

In addition, if you leave 10 per cent or more of your estate to charity the remainder benefits from a reduced inheritance tax rate, meaning a greater share for your other beneficiaries

How can we help?

We can advise you on preparing a will in a way that ensures your choices are clear and legally binding, as well as helping you to create the legacy you wish to leave

Hedgehog Haven

This is Stella, she was found at side of the road when her finder witnessed her being hit by a car, unfortunately although she has made a full recovery, she is now unable to curl up into a tight ball which makes her very vulnerable to predators, and cold weather. The good thing is that she is going to an enclosed garden where she can live a more natural life without danger and will be able to be monitored in case any problems should arise.

If you see a hedgehog out during the day, they are usually in trouble, please pick them up and pop in a box before seeking help I have had 2 incidents in one week of finders ringing me and the hedgehogs had disappeared and not been found again. One was seen surrounded by flies which is a sign of some kind of injury, so the prognosis for that one is not good

Schoolboys Finley and Joel will shortly be starring in Goodnight Mister Tom at the Coronation Hall Mundesley They play evacuees from London during World War II who have suddenly been taken from the city and dropped into the countryside They are then billeted with the locals of Little Weirwold

Many people will remember the film of the same name with the late John Thaw as Mr Tom The heart rending tale of an elderly recluse and a small boy forced together in circumstances beyond their control The stage play by the Mundesley Players tells the same story with Finley Spanton (11) as William Beech and Neil Ellson as Mister Tom.

“Simply reading the script had me in tears,” said Cheryl Collings the director “There is so much depth in the characters Bringing them to life on stage makes the whole thing seem so real At one particularly moving section during rehearsals, I noticed that even the hardened actors and crew were starting to well up ”

The part of bright and exuberant Zack is played by Joel Swash (9) who recently appeared as Young Shrek at the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre. “All the child actors are doing so well,” said Cheryl, “and sometimes the adults find themselves being prompted by their younger counterparts when they miss a cue ”

Goodnight Mister Tom is sometimes used in schools to teach the 9 11 year olds about the life of children of their own age during wartime It shows the hard reality of kids’ lives during that period, plus the friendship of a sickly boy who has been treated badly by his mother and the new and surprising friendships he makes.

This production has a large cast of both adults and children who tell this moving story on stage It is on at the Coronation Hall Mundesley between Wednesday 26th and Saturday 29th October Tickets are £15 adults and £10 under 16s, bookable online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/mundesley players

North Walsham Market Place Improvement Works Car Park Arrangements

As works to improve North Walsham Market Place and town centre progress, North Norfolk District Council can confirm the car parking arrangements in the town are as follows during the period of work:

Bank Loke car park will be open every day (with usual charges applied) except Thursdays when it accommodates the town’s weekly market New Road car park will be open every day (with usual charges applied), where there are refurbished toilets to support the new travel hub, with buses removed from the Market Place and to relieve congestion between the post office and Lidl’s Vicarage Street car park will be open with free parking From January new public toilets including Changing Places facilities will be built on the site of the existing dated toilets.

Mundesley Road car park will provide free two hour parking throughout the period of the Market Place works, following a three week closure to improve the surface

For town centre workers and long stay users, there is a new free public car park at Hornbeam Road (NR28 0FX), which is a 10 minute walk from the town centre

Once the works are complete the free 30 minute spaces, historically accommodated in the Market Place will be provided for 60 minutes on parts of the Bank Loke and Vicarage Street car parks

Four Blue Badge parking spaces are to be retained in the Market Place as part of the improvement plans, which create a safer and more attractive town centre environment for residents and visitors

Cllr Richard Kershaw, portfolio holder for Sustainable Growth, said: “We appreciate everybody’s patience while these major works are carried out in North Walsham Once completed, the town centre will be significantly improved and an even more welcoming place for visitors to enjoy and residents to be proud of ”

The safest method of ear wax removal is by professional micro-suction.

ECHO Ear Care is a new service, which is now available in Holt Consulting Rooms for clinic appointments.

Summer Notes from the Commons

What a difference from last years’ somewhat indifferent summer, gone were the cloudy skies and unbroken blue sky and sunshine prevailed It was far from ideal, however, as temperatures soared with July peaking locally at 37 2° C, just below the national record breaking 40 3° C Hardly any rain fell and by the end of August the region was in drought The following account documents the wildlife highlights, mainly recorded by Mark Clements and I throughout June, July and August

A Red Kite drifted west (01 June) and the day flying Mother Shipton moth along with a Lattice Heath and a Marsh Pug moth were noted The following day (02 June) Mark saw another Red Kite and a Marsh Harrier heading west A Nightjar that arrived at the end of May was advertising its presence (03 June) by its characteristic ‘churring’ call which was being delivered in short bursts A Green Hairstreak butterfly and the ‘first for the year ’ Common Spotted Orchid were also seen Peter Geary reported a sighting of a Little Egret (04 June) heading south east over the Commons Three days later (07 June) Mark spotted two Spoonbills heading east and then a Hobby, heading east in the morning and then west in the afternoon A Sharp tailed Bee, one of two species was present These bees are cleptoparasites, that is, they do not collect pollen themselves, and instead they lay their eggs in nests of foraging bees where the larvae on hatching consume the host’s store of pollen and nectar Not typical wildlife of the Commons, but a blue and white Budgerigar was noted by Mark (08 June) and an immature female Red veined Darter was seen on the central marsh By its weak flight and pale colouring it had probably only just emerged from one of the bog pools In the grassland area the first Meadow Brown of the year was found (09 June) A new dragonfly for the Commons, the Norfolk Hawker was photographed on the main pond by David Gilroy (12 June) These dragonflies were formally only found in the Broads but in recent years have started to extend their range Two other insects new to the Commons were found (14 June) in the grassland area They were the Violet Black legged Robberfly and the Square spot Deerfly The following day (15 June) a rare Marsh Warbler was present This is only the second time one has been recorded for the site. The previous one also turned up at the main pond (19 June 2017) A female Black tailed Skimmer was

also present; a dragonfly that is not seen that often in the area although can be very common in and around the Broads Much of the summer wildlife news has been dominated by the first ever successful breeding of two pairs of European Bee eaters at Trimingham, however, some of the non breeding birds present often ranged a few miles from the site and Iain Starke, while visiting the Commons managed to record two Bee eaters heading south east back to Trimingham? (17 June) Two elusive butterflies, the White letter Hairstreak and White Admiral were recorded almost a month earlier than 2021 by Mark (23 June) as well as one of the first Humming bird Hawk moths of the summer Silver washed Fritillary and Marsh Fragrant Orchids were also noted (29 June)

A juvenile Peregrine Falcon identified by its coloured ring (01 July) turned out to be the surviving chick that was bred on Cromer church tower earlier this year

A Hobby was reported by David Billham (03 July) and the first Purple Hairstreak was about a week earlier than normal (05 July) A male Red veined Darter and two Brown Hawker Dragonflies were noted by Mark (12 July) The juvenile Peregrine from Cromer and a Purple Emperor butterfly were observed (14 July) The hot weather caused a heap of cut reed and grass to spontaneously combust (15 July) in a scrubby area Thanks to the Sheringham Fire Brigade the fire was contained and finally put out before it could spread to the vulnerable central marsh A female Marsh Harrier headed east (17 July) and a male Banded Demoiselle visited the pond On the hottest day on record in the Uk (19 July) a female Purple Emperor was found seeking shade in the secondary woodland in the south of the SSSI and a Ruddy Darter was visiting the pond David Billham reported a sighting of a Little Egret flying west (21 July) and two months after it first arrived the Nightjar was still present and ‘churring’ (23 July)

A Pantaloon Bee (named after the long orange pollen gathering hairs on the females back legs)

and a new bee, the Painted Nomad Bee were spotted by Mark (26 July) A Green Sandpiper passed over west (29 July) and throughout the month there were further reports of Peregrine, Red Kite and Hobby

A Willow Emerald was noted (02 August) as was the showy hoverfly, Chrysotoxum festivum and numerous Bee wolves

A Hobby passed westwards (05 August) and a Red Kite (09 August) also seen was a Crucifer Bug Another Hobby noted by Mark passed eastwards and a Whimbrel flew west along with 26 Cormorants also heading west (10 August)

A large and somewhat attractive fly, Phasia hemiptera was visiting Water Mint (11 August) and the cleptoparasitic bee, Black thighed Epeolus was found on Common Fleabane By now the only plants producing nectar in any quantity were the mint and fleabane as the hot weather had caused many flowers to turn to seed early By the middle of the month migrants from Europe and Scandinavia in particular were beginning to arrive and Pied Flycatcher and Lesser Whitethroat were present (14 August)

A wasp’s nest in the ground was dug up and broken apart in the central marsh (18 August) This is most likely the work of a Badger A Stoat was seen by Mark (19 August), which is a rare sight on the SSSI nowadays. The last recorded sighting was in 2013. The Ivy Bee appeared earlier than usual and was visiting Water Mint as the Ivy flowers were not yet open A Spotted Flycatcher was reported by Andy Clarke (26 August) and four Whinchats were noted (30 August) Numerous Hobby sightings occurred throughout the month with three being seen throughout the day (31 August)

Following on from August, September has also been very busy especially as I have been manning the “cat phone” while Stephanie has been taking a well deserved holiday Although we state our preferred method of contact is by telephone, I have realised we do still get many enquiries by email As these come to me, I have been able to deal with them directly rather than advise the enquirer to give Stephanie a call However, as so many of these have been for the same cats, I have not been able to respond to them straight away as we may already have several people interested in said cats and we deal with all enquiries on a first come basis

Several more of the cats have been reserved and will be leaving us shortly We also have people interested in some of the younger cats featured on the website and as already explained these will be dealt with in the order in which they were received

Bear, one of the cats mentioned last time, has recently had his blood test and we are waiting for the result which, hopefully, will allow him to leave immediately for his new home His new family are keeping their fingers crossed that the test indicates no further action is needed Lionel, the other cat mentioned, has recovered from his operation Initially he tended to hide but has now come out of his shell and is ready to join a new family Although we tried once again to contact the owner of the stray cat, we received no response whatsoever to emails, phone calls or the paper collars The cat was due to go on our waiting list, to come in when a pen became available, but happily the lady who had been caring for him has decided to keep him

We have several young cats that do need homes with people who are experienced cat owners, willing to give them plenty of time to settle They all have lovely temperaments but are still quite timid when meeting new people Cats like Sophie and Frankie who joined us from a local colony but were slightly older than previous litters These lovely young cats are very playful and happy to receive contact from their carers However, they do not show themselves to best advantage when meeting new people Once in a home with experience cat owners, preferably with no young children, and given plenty of time to adapt to their new surroundings, they will make lovely companions

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring

07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher) This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858 Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www northwalsham .cats.org.uk

where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home

We are on Facebook You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

firework fears!

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary Always keep dogs and cats indoors during fireworks and make sure dogs are walked earlier in the day to avoid being out when fireworks are let off.

Many pets go missing at this time of year when they get scared by fireworks so make sure all pets are easily identified with a collar and tag or microchip (with up to date contact details) so that they can be reunited with you if they get scared and manage to run off

It can help to build your pet a safe den and keep windows, doors and curtains closed to minimise noise as much as possible Some pets will find it comforting to have an alternative noise so keeping the radio or television on can help to reduce awareness of the sound of fireworks

Pets will often look to you for reassurance

during stressful situations so try to act as normally as possible and make sure not to tell pets off if they are behaving in a stressed manner during fireworks It is also important to reward calm and relaxed behaviour with cuddles and treats!

There are also several medicines and techniques which can be used to reduce anxiety around firework season.

phobia CDs are also available and are designed to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a long period of time in the run up to Firework Night

It’s also important to remember small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs as well as birds during this stressful season

These pets can also get easily scared and, if possible, these pets should be moved into a quiet room or shed If this is not possible, cages should be covered to reduce the sound of the fireworks and turned to face a wall so the firework lights are less visible.

It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed

Sheringham’s Tom Withington is setting up a Performing Arts academy in Sheringham -TWPerformingArts

Born in Sheringham Tom was a performer from 2 years of age He says he was fortunate to have been taught by a really good dance teacher, Siobhan Webster As part of her dance school, he not only developed strong technique but also had lots of performing opportunities on the Pier, Sheringham Little Theatre, and at the Hippodrome Theatre Great Yarmouth Later, he attended Aylsham High School and again had lots of dance and performing experience as part of their many shows Tom, however, feels most importantly he was encouraged by Siobhan to broaden his dance experiences He was encouraged to audition and be accepted onto the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training programme (CAT Scheme) in Ipswich, which has bursaries for talented youngsters

On joining the CAT Scheme at 11, Tom was involved in professional training until 18 Then going on to train at conservatoires; London Contemporary Dance School and Trinity Laban where he gained an MA in Dance Performance before dancing professionally abroad and in the UK. He continues to work professionally and lectures at City College Norwich and various other Performing Arts institutions

Now based back in North Norfolk, Tom feels strongly that young people are encouraged to widen their horizons and inspired to achieve their dreams and should be able to access high quality and current technical dance training

TWPA is an extension of the private elite coaching based on this which he has successfully developed in Norwich as TWTuition

TWPA is also an innovative approach for North Norfolk, in that youngsters from 3 years old can come for a block of time and not only have specific technique classes but also take part in conditioning classes and learn about the importance of nutrition and wellbeing to be a strong, fit and healthy dancer It is also about broadening horizons and encouraging students to be curious and experience a wide range of dance and performance Classes include creative dance and ballet for TiddlyTW’s (age 3 5). Older dancers (6 19) will have the opportunity to improve technique, stamina and performance through dance conditioning, ballet, contemporary, jazz and commercial

The aim at TWPA is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all students that is inclusive, artistic and prides itself on technical quality

Launching on the 8th October in Sheringham, there are free trial sessions for young people aged 3 19 There is more information on the website www.TWPerformingArts.co.uk and their fb page where there are links to sign up for the free trial sessions Students are encouraged to try all of the classes for their age group If you miss the launch you can still have free trial sessions for one of all the classes on offer in your age group.

Weather forecastoct-Dec 2022

A mixed year globally so far, including summer heat spikes in the Northern Hemisphere and record cold temperatures tumbling in the Southern Hemisphere

October is likely to be a repeat of September which was quite mixed, even having high pressure in close attendance, it’s position allowed much colder air to come down the east coast which not only produced some rain but certainly subdued temperatures November, because the tropical Atlantic has been much quieter than predicted, there is a chance that high pressure might give us a reasonable month, otherwise changeable Either way, colder air could be poised to come in from the east and last at least to mid December, thereafter, until the end of the month, somewhat less cold air will still be hanging around Ned Nimbus

Going Back to my Roots

We are all being told to eat healthily, eat the rainbow, eat 5 a day, but budget must factor into our eating habits too Adding in extra veg need not cost the earth if you shop clever and use seasonal veg, and you can easily add in extra fibre and even protein by keeping tins of beans and pulses on the shelf; include a tin of green lentils with your bolognaise, add extra mixed beans to chilli, pop in some haricot beans with your soup A really easy way to get more veg with your roast dinner or sausage and mash is by adding veg to the mashed potatoes, think root veg like parsnips, celeriac, swede and carrot, all of which are reasonably priced at this time of year I’ve used bacon, but the recipe below is easily adaptable to any protein, so you could use any cooked meat, corned beef, bacon or even tinned fish such as tuna or salmon If you’re vegan, use baked or fried smoked tofu It makes the most of seasonal veg, with

sultanas in a large bowl, in another bowl whisk together the eggs, melted butter, zest and juice and tip into the dry ingredients, add the grated pumpkin and mix thoroughly Spoon into the baking tin, level and bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown and springy to the touch

For the topping, beat together the cream cheese, soft butter, orange juice and 1 teaspoon of the juice until smooth

When the cake comes out of the oven, leave for 5 minutes then prick all over with a skewer and drizzle over the remaining orange juice.

When the cake is completely cold spread the cream cheese topping over the entire cake and sprinkle orange zest over the cake to decorate (Pumpkin sprinkles or any other decoration you choose would be fine too)

Enjoy! Jo

a base of potatoes which are reasonably priced at any time of year, and you can use any herb that you fancy Adjust the amount of veg according to how many people you have to feed or make more and freeze in portions to reheat in the microwave, making your cooking session much more energy efficient.

Autumn Scramble

Smoked bacon, finely chopped

1 large white onion, chopped finely A little oil

2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped Potatoes, peeled Celeriac, peeled Parsnip, peeled Carrot

Oregano, or herb of your choice

A little grated cheese to top Fry the bacon with the onion in a little oil until crispy, adding in the garlic for the last few minutes and being careful not to burn it Meanwhile, cut your potatoes into large chunks, and all the other veg smaller so that they cook at the same time, and put into a large pan of water Bring to the boil, turn down and simmer until the veg are soft, then drain and mash with a little butter and milk, stirring in the herbs and bacon/onion/ garlic until all combined Place in an oven proof dish, sprinkle over the grated cheese and put into a preheated oven on 180° for about 20 minutes until piping hot throughout Serve with greens or baked beans

Coastal Art Group Thanks visitors to Their Summer Exhibition

The Coastal Art Group had its first Summer Exhibition, this summer, after three years absence, at Weybourne Village Hall over the August Bank Holiday weekend August 26th, 27th and 28th The members would like to thank the many visitors who spent time viewing work and chatting with members of the group Members had a successful event with many paintings, drawings and embroideries purchased

Many visitors found time to stop a while, enjoying a relaxing drink or choosing something to eat from the vast selection of donated homemade cakes and savouries. A raffle of one of Bette Hodgson’s framed watercolours (ticket 3 claimed) raised £150 whilst the sale of donated art books and art materials raised another £162 It was a fabulous event, supported by local residents and holidaymakers alike, which was made all the more important as our Summer Exhibition would have normally been organised by Bette Hodgson who started the group some 15 years ago, but who sadly died earlier this year in May

We are thrilled to let you know that the generosity of visitors, through their donations, purchases of art books and materials, the proceeds from the raffle and the sale of light refreshments plus the generous offer from Bette Hodgson’s

family to donate any monies from the sale of any of her paintings raised an amazing £1000 for Dementia UK Thank you all so much

However, we could not have done it without the fabulous work on display from our members, and the help and support I have received getting the event organised and to those members available to ‘Meet and Greet’ and assist visitors over the weekend event

a huge thank you also goes to the bakers and cooks for their generous and delicious donations of cakes, biscuits and savouries and assistance running the kitchen; and to the magnificent help we received to set up, break down and tidy up after the event

I won’t embarrass you by naming you, but you know who you are! Without you all, the event would not have happened Bravo to you all and we will be back next year

For more information regarding the Summer Exhibition or joining the weekly Coastal Art Group at Weybourne, please contact Susan Metté on coastalartgroup1@gmail co uk or phone/text 07842 172 915

World Alzheimer's Month is a global opportunity to educate, raise awareness and challenge stigma surrounding Alzheimer ’s and dementia. At Clapham & Collinge LLP, we are proud to support this awareness month and their lawyers are keen to do what they can, having seen the challenges faced by family members who care for those diagnosed with dementia

On World Alzheimer ’s Day which took place on Wednesday 21st September, we joined forces with Home Instead Norwich to provide a free to attend dementia training session for family members, friends and unpaid carers of those with dementia During this training session Chris Carter and Lauren Pashley from Home Instead Norwich explained the symptoms of dementia and the impact on behaviour, offered tips and techniques for managing behaviours and highlighted activities to encourage engagement and wellbeing

In support of World Alzheimer ’s Month, we’re also offering our clients 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorney throughout October…

Why is a Lasting Power of Attorney important?

There may be a time when you can no longer share or communicate what you think, or you cannot make decision over your finances or legal affairs This may be due to the development of a medical condition such as dementia If you are affected by dementia you will need to consider the legal and financial implications for you and your family

If you lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that enables people you choose to have legal authority to make certain decisions for you, if you become unable to make them yourself The person who is given this authority is known as an ‘attorney’ They can manage your finances or make decisions relating to your health and welfare There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney:

• Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney:

This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your money and property, including managing bank or building society accounts, paying bills, collecting a pension and if necessary, selling your home Once registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, it can be used

immediately, or held in readiness until required

• Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney: This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your daily routine, medical care, moving into a care home and life sustaining medical treatment It can only be used if you are unable to make your own decisions.

In relation to the cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney, this will depend on whether you wish to have both a Lasting Power of Attorney (Property and Financial Affairs) and/or a Lasting Power of Attorney (Health and Welfare) prepared and registered

At Clapham & Collinge LLP we have a team of expert lawyers who provide advice and assistance in the preparation of your Lasting Powers of Attorney to make sure they are right for you and reflect your wishes. We also register the documents as soon as they are prepared to ensure that they can be used straight away if needed

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

On 6th September we had, as usual, an excellent lunch at The Links Hotel in West Runton, and then Paul Hensby and Mike Goldwater spoke to us about Poppyland Community Radio

This is an online only service which started in February this year and is based at The Belfry Centre in Overstrand.

Its aim is to combat loneliness and to encourage a sense of community; its programmes include “mardling” (chat) sessions, interviews and a wide variety of music and “aim to inform and entertain, enhancing the quality of life of (the) listeners ” (Quotation from its website poppylandradio co uk)

All the staff are volunteers, and the station is financed by a trust fund and by sponsorship arrangements. The station would like to recruit further “Mardle” presenters and also people with technical and other expertise.

It is also looking for some additional studio space Paul and Mike made it clear that this talk was deliberately a recruitment drive (!) but in doing so gave a very interesting talk on this local initiative

At the end there was a time for questions and then we thanked Paul and Mike with a round of applause

On 1st November club member Paul Newman will speak to us about climate change

William Henry (Fatty) Foulke was a professional goalkeeper who, if he didn’t eat all the pies, certainly gave it a good try

Few people remember him today Yet he was truly the stuff of legends He was big for sure Bulky would have been no exaggeration, although nobody could agree about his exact size or weight Some said he was 6ft 9ins and eventually weighed anything up to 24 stone Whatever the exact statistics he was twice the weight of a modern ‘keeper Along with his ample figure he was not one who liked to be messed with. Foulke played for Sheffield United, Chelsea

and Bradford City between 1894 1908, that much is true But as for the rest? It is hard to

know what is fact and what was at best an embroidered version of the truth as he was also a showman

For instance, it is said he was not averse to picking an opponent up and dumping him in the goal. A player advancing on his goal would be thinking “do I score, and risk irritating the guy or make sure I miss and live to play again?”

Foulke had a pathological dislike of referees After Sheffield United had been beaten in the 1902 Cup Final he complained that Southampton’s equalising goal should not have stood

Foulke left the dressing room dripping wet from the shower, stark naked and chased the referee who took refuge in a broom cupboard Officials had to intervene to prevent him tearing the door down! One can only imagine what Match of the Day would have made of that!

His legend grew with his age and weight One account has it that he went down to the dining room where his team were staying and polished off all 11 breakfasts If so Gaviscon would have signed him up for sure!

It has been said that Foulke was the original subject of the football chant of “who ate all the pies” Doubtful because it is sung to the tune of Knees Up Mother Brown which didn’t emerge until 1918, two years after Foulke’s death.

It is likely some of the legends that surrounded the big man were a result of astute marketing and done to boost attendances One story has it that Chelsea positioned boys behind Foulke’s goal to make him look even larger than he was and that was how ball boys came into being Although it almost certainly wasn’t the case When his playing career ended it was said he ended up saving shots from holidaymakers on the beach at Black pool

He didn’t He owned a shop in Sheffield and was often seen walking around in a smart suit with his football medals hanging from his neck

We will never see the likes of Foulke again that’s for sure It is hard to imagine a keeper grabbing Lionel Messi and throwing him into the net without sending VAR into apoplexy!

The Hidden World Beneath Holt

The Holt Society launch of The Hidden World Beneath Holt project on

September 23rd saw members gathered at St Andrews Church Hall for an introduction by Chair Keith Gosden who was delighted to announce that there were already 22 sites involved

This initiative is focussed within the Holt conservation zone and is researching both commercial and domestic properties and the physical and social history of the rich range of cellar spaces identified. The launch especially provided an opportunity for 40 members to visit the cellars at Bakers and Larners courtesy of Nick Baker, Senior Family Director who kindly accompanied us Patrick Sewell Head of the Wine Department lead the 2 tours and took us down into 3 interlocking cellars each of different date and all in current use From the main and most recently restored cellar a narrow and low short passage led into the oldest Here natural light from a glass grill set into the pavement outside the front of the store, allowed us to see the surprise of a very rare fern, carefully protected, flourishing in an aperture A further aperture under another pavement grill in the third cellar boasted

a long delivery slide still in use today The variety of the structures of each space and their material composition indicated a complex architectural history while remnants of hanging systems a varied history of usage in their ambient temperature We could stand there and easily imagine staff in the past coming down the stairs to hang candleholders and oil lamps on hooks while collecting the grocery items and stored meats and diary produce for sale in the shop

Bebe Takes full Advantage at Swim Gala

Bebe King, of North Walsham, took full advantage at the "Summer Splash” gala held at the UEA Sports Park hosted by Gt Yarmouth Swimming Club The 11 year old entered seven events and medalled in all as the North Norfolk Vikings competed in respective age group categories. In her first event, Bebe demonstrated her all round ability on all strokes when she took a silver in the 100m Individual Medley with 1:41.8: This proved to be a fore runner for what was to come It was her powerful, nonchalant, longer strokes where she took full advantage This style of technique took her on to further success when she won the 25m freestyle in just 17 62 and victory again in the 25m breaststroke when she went 25 95 Her third gold was the 25m backstroke when she touched in 21:89 and to conclude her seven medal haul, she came home first in 21 89 over the same distance on backstroke to clinch her fourth gold Reuben Seaman

collected three more gold medals The 10 year old dominated the 100m Individual Medley finishing in 1:44 03 but in his 50m freestyle, he was pushed all the way by Charlie Pickering of Great Yarmouth, and it was only the electronic timing which could separate them as Reuben touched in 41 29 from

Charlie's

41 43 respectively

North Norfolk Vikings also won another hat trick of golds, this time through another 10 year old, Toby Caufield: all over 50m In the freestyle 45.01, backstroke 51.12 and breast stroke 1:00 15 However, Toby was not finished there he won a bronze in the 50m butterfly with his 59 60

The gold medals continued to be achieved and two more followed by two more 10 year olds Lily Dear in

Sheringham Ramblers

At the age of 90, Dereck Smith is finally hanging up his boots as a walk leader for Sheringham Ramblers after 25 years’ service to the group following his retirement with wife Margaret to Sheringham

Over this time, he has been a committee member and a willing volunteer to help out at social events. He has led over 150 walks of 10 miles or more and it is only recently that he has reduced these to a more sedate 5 miles! However, just a few weeks ago, he ticked off an item on his bucket list, as part of his 90th birthday celebration, and walked out to Blakeney Point and back a distance of 8 5 miles with a couple of rambling friends

The other Sunday, Sheringham Ramblers had a local walk in Sheringham Park followed by their annual BBQ at Upper Sheringham Village Hall with over 35 members enjoying the food This was the perfect occasion to recognize Dereck’s service and Stuart Meakin, the group treasurer, on behalf of the Committee, presented him with a dinner

Backgammon

The 2022 North Norfolk Summer Backgammon Open, at Gresham Village Hall on Sunday 25th September, drew 8 players (many Circle members being away on holiday or social engagements), who were thus conveniently able to contest a 3 round knockout Matches were to 7 points with cubes in the first and semi final rounds, and to 11 points in the last John Ingamells (Cromer) defeated Arthur Sinacola (Fakenham) in the final, winning the trophy on offer. Third prize went to Martyn Guest (Norwich) who overcame Ian De’Ath (Hickstead) in the Consolation (1st round losers) final, while Cedric Lytton was lucky against Gerry Enslin (both Sheringham) in the losing semi finalists’ contest

The next meeting will be on Sunday 23rd October starting 10am, same venue Newcomers welcome

the 50m freestyle with 37 63 when she defeated a field of eighteen swimmers and Grace Parker winning the 25m butterfly event in 20 65 in a close fingertip finish beating seven competitors Meanwhile, both 12 year old Bailee Beighton and 13 year old Razvan Platon won consolation medals in respective events

At the conclusion of the gala, coach John Holden said: "I was delighted for the swimmers who gained just reward for all their hard work and commitment Every team member came in the top three at least twice Their technique is also improving as our younger swimmers are enjoying the experience of competing

Vikings won 12 Golds, 10 Silvers and 4 Bronze Medals
