Sheringham Town Council Pay Tribute to Cllr. Mac McGinn

It is with tremendous sadness that Sheringham Town Council announce the loss of Cllr Mac McGinn B.E.M. His keen wit and sense of humour will be sorely missed by us all.

A proponent of youth services and provisions, Mac leaves behind a legacy of a lifelong commitment to serving his local community.

Mac, who grew up in Heacham, relocated with his family to Sheringham in 1964 and took up the post of Youth and Community Officer for the Town and was involved in building the first purpose built Youth and Community Centre in Norfolk named by members the ‘Teen and Twenty Club’ (A name which has gone down in Sheringham’s History). Mac also became involved in Sheringham Carnival shortly after settling in and continued to help organise the annual event for 26 years. In 1965 Mac set up the first youth football club, and was recognised for his services to football in 1983. Continued on page 4...

Sheringham Town Council Pay Tribute to Cllr. Mac McGinn

Continued from front cover... Mac was first elected onto the Sheringham Urban District Council in 1972, then two years later after the Local Government Act came into force granting town councils more authority, he was made Chair of the newly-formed Sheringham Town Council, an honour he accepted again 1985-1989. Mac was then elected as Town Mayor in 2001-2004.

During his near 5 decades in local government, Mac also served as District Councillor for 12 years. Sheringham Town Council Mayor, Madeleine Ashcroft added; ““Mac McGinn has played a visible role in many capacities in Sheringham for some 50 years. His contribution through to the Town Council in particular has been comprehensive and spectacular. His knowledge of people, places and the history of the town and its inhabitants was extraordinary. “Mac’s input to Town Council affairs was therefore invaluable and that input will be sorely missed. “Mac remained close to the Town Council’s business to the end, always interested and always imparting valuable and grounded advice. There are many people who will miss “Mac’s presence but his sound advice to all would be his usual, “Listen, Consider, Draw on Experience, Discuss and then Decide together Valete Mac McGinn. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Mac’s family and friends at this time.

FAIRTRADE FOR SHERINGHAM

Letter from the Fairtrade Foundation, 6th August 2020.

"We're glad to let you know your Fairtrade Renewal for 2020 has been successful... You have engaged successfully with a large number of people and have organised interesting events. It is also very promising that you participate in the local Sheringham Carnival Charities Day and Aldborough Fair."

Thank you so much Sheringham and North Norfolk for your continued, loyal support!

Brenda Smith and the Fairtrade for Sheringham Group.

He was regularly out and about during Carnival and the Potty Weekend in costume with a bucket fundraising for the town. He won three Sheringham Local Hero Community Awards over the years. Always ready to pitch in and help out in so many ways, too numerous to mention.

Tribute to Nicky Royle

Sheringham has lost one of its most recognizable and respected characters. Nicky Royle sadly died, aged 61.

Nicky was a familiar figure around the town in his flat cap and shorts, pushing his company vehicle George with all the tools of his trade as an electrician.

He was a regular at the Morley Club and had organized a raffle which he had hoped to see drawn on Carnival Day this year, alas he won’t see the fantastic total in excess of £3000 that it has raised.

He moved to Sheringham in 2000 and quickly got involved in community projects including Sheringham Carnival, Sheringham in Bloom, beach cleans and for 12 years putting up Sheringham Christmas Lights. He was a long-time member of Sheringham Horticultural Society where his baking won numerous trophies in the Summer Show, much to the envy of the female entrants.

His funeral will took place on Thursday 6th August, but due to Covid restrictions, only family members were able to attend, but Nicky’s funeral car passed by The Morley Club where a large crowd of people paid their respects prior to a private ceremony at Cromer Crematorium.

Donations in memory of Nicky can be left at The Morley Club or by cheque to Sheila McGinley, 6 Holway Road, Sheringham. All donations will go to the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre at Cromer Hospital which will provide much needed chemotherapy facilities locally.

A Note from the editor

CHESS PROBLEMS by Dr Cedric Lytton

Summer is about to give way to Autumn and the days are getting a little shorter, it has been very busy with visitors to North Norfolk which has gone some way to keeping our local businesses afloat during the crisis. Schools are reopening and some semblance of normality is returning.

282. Ernst Altman. Western Daily Mercury, 1912

There has been much praise for the NHS, emergency workers, carers and volunteers during the Covid crisis, and rightly so, but let’s not forget the others who have kept us going throughout lockdown. All the shop workers who have kept us going with food, DIY supplies and gardening essentials. The army of delivery drivers getting our online orders out and the innovative ways people have kept us entertained, fit and informed via the internet. Have you noticed that, for the most part, people are more patient and polite when out and about? Long may it continue!

282. (White to play and) Mate in two moves.

We begin a new solving competition with No. 282 above, the first of 9 planned for the rest of the year, CV19 permitting. For me, problems have been a wonderful way of continuing to enjoy chess during lockdown, and two-movers are the problemist’s bread and butter. We start you off with a very easy one with a splendid key and a star variation showing a theme called the Gamage unpin.

Remember, if you have any news or interesting stories to share with our readers you can email them to Jo on info@holtchronicle.co.uk. Enjoy your September magazine and what remains of the summer.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offe fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

“I was lucky,” Dave admits. “I eventually got help and am on the road to recovery, although it has been a slow climb uphill and it hasn’t been without it set-backs. I have found that writing poetry has been an excellent way of releasing my emotions and processing my thoughts. Photography has also been an enormous help allowing me to express myself in pictures and create something positive that others can enjoy. I have immersed myself in capturing our wonderful North Norfolk Coast and enjoying where I live – it has been a very important part of my therapy and my journey back to good metal health.” Some of Dave’s images of North Norfolk have been reproduced as postcards and calendars, and are being stocked in retail outlets in Cromer as well as being sold online through his own website www.davefincham.photography. There are also plans for Dave’sphotographic work and poetry to go on display in Norwich next year and to be reproduced in a coffee-table book. Dave commented: “I would say to anyone with any mental health issues to seek out help and don’t give up. It took me almost 2 years of trying to access help to get the support I needed but just make that first call and life will improve. Despite still being on my journey to recovery, I think I am one of the happiest I have ever been now.” Dave’s photography can be found online at www.davefincham.photography and Outside The Wire at www.matthewproject.org/outsidethewire

Uplifting concert boosts funds for locked down Little Theatre

WE

A sell-out concert crowd enjoyed uplifting stories and classical music as Sheringham Little Theatre signalled another big step back from lockdown.

Theatre supporters picnicked and savoured top quality music in the walled garden of spectacular moated Mannington Hall. The London Mozart Players’ relaxing sounds were mixed with positive reflections on the good things to come out the pandemic delivered by young local actors.

Want to know how much your house is worth? The market is buoyant and there are lots of buyers out there. Plus, there’s the added incentive of a stamp duty holiday*.

Enjoying walks in the surrounding countryside, spending time in family bubbles, appreciating company after isolation, and using newfound spare time to create music and writing were among the pluses of lockdown recounted by the theatre’s young talent Tilda Fassih, Charlie Randall, Katie Thompson and Jodie Weller. The London Mozart Players performing, with leader Simon Blendis in the foreground

They reminded the 100-strong socially-distanced audience of the joys and importance of live performance, as the Little Theatre and musicians staged their first since March in an event which will raise funds for the theatre whose income dried up when the coronavirus struck.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “The concert was a huge success, with a crowd captivated by the music and thoughts in sunny weather and the perfect setting of the stately Happy picnickers relax in the hall grounds home belonging to our before the concert patron Lord Walpole. It has been fantastic to see 100 people enjoy a live event for the first time in months, which will provide us with much-needed funds.”

Book a valuation and open the door to a new possibility.

Give the coastal team a call…

Leader of the 10-strong slimmed down orchestra Simon Blendis added: “We have performed live video concerts – but there is nothing like the shared experience of a live audience in front of you. You can feel them listening to the music. It gives you an extra buzz, and it was great to do it again after so long.”

The Players’ programme included works by Elgar, Greig, Tchaikovsky and Mozart.

The event was promoted by Orchestras Live, whose senior creative producer Stuart Bruce said: “It was great to have the local young people playing a huge role in helping shape the concert, curating the words, helping choose the music, and presenting at the event – as well as seeing freelance musicians back performing live and restarting their careers.”

According to RIGHTMOVE the biggest spike in property searches is on BOXING DAY.

A recorded version of the concert is available (tickets £6 and including bonus interviews) via the Little Theatre website www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com. Tickets provide a link that can be viewed between August 29 and September 9.

The theatre is continuing its comeback with a series of upcoming movies, details of which will also be on the website – along with a donate button for those wishing to support the venue in its bid to survive and thrive in the future. Pictures: Richard Batson / SLT www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.”

As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next.

But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them.

Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure

If you are alerted by NHS Test and Trace, you must isolate for 14 days after your contact with the individual. If you develop symptoms, you must book a test at the NHS coronavirus website and your household must isolate.

Keeping yourselves and others safe

Coronavirus is still with us. Cases in Norfolk are low and we want to keep them that way. The best thing to do to protect ourselves and others is to continue to wash our hands regularly, keep our distance from others and wear a face covering in shops and on public transport.

To protect others, you and everyone living in your house should isolate straight away if you show symptoms. The symptoms are: a new continuous cough; fever; or a loss or change in your taste and smell.

Healthwatch Norfolk and NCC seeking the views of relatives with loved ones in care during COVID-19

As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Everyone is eligible to get a test if they have symptoms. You can choose either a drive-through test or a home test kit. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next.

Dealing with the risk of COVID-19 has been stressful for both care home residents and their families, and across the country, people are paying respect to residents and staff that tragically lost their lives to the virus.

NHS Test and Trace will contact people who test positive for Covid-19. They will ask you about who you have been in contact with from two days before onset of symptoms to seven days after. This will identify people at risk who could pass on the virus before (or without) showing symptoms themselves.

For more information about how to stay safe and how to get support if you need it whilst isolating visit: norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus

Consequently, many new measures have been introduced in care homes to minimise risk and save lives.

Local Outbreak Control Plan

A Norfolk Local Outbreak Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others, Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus.

If a friend or relative of yours has spent time in a residential or nursing home during the pandemic, Healthwatch Norfolk want to know how you have coped with the changes to understand what worked well and what could have been improved.

The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the first place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in specific work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can find further guidance and support.

Feedback will be collected anonymously and fed back to Norfolk County Council, who want to learn by listening to the public so that care homes can be safer, more resilient, and communicate better with families in the future.

You can participate by completing the short survey at www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/bxvqni/ where you will be asked questions about:

It was developed after the Government announced that every area of England should produce a plan to prevent and manage local outbreaks of coronavirus as lockdown measures are eased.

Prevention is key, and with further restrictions having been lifted, measures such as hand washing, social distancing in public places, and encouraging people to access testing immediately if they are unwell, are more important than ever. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Hospital charity to hold Service of Remembrance

A virtual Service of Remembrance will be held for families, friends and carers of people who have died at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals.

The event will be available from Saturday, September 12 and people are invited to get in touch if they would like a loved one’s name or favourite poem to be read out at the service.

The service has been organised by the N&N Hospitals Charity and will be led by NNUH Lead Chaplain Adrian Woodhouse and Chief Nurse Professor Nancy Fontaine in the hospital chapel with members of the public invited to

watch from home.

N&N Hospitals Charity Head of Fundraising Louise Cook said: “We already hold an annual Remembrance Service for babies and children but this is the first time we have held such a service to include adults.

“This will be an all-inclusive event and an opportunity for people to remember their loved ones who have passed away at the hospital, not just in the past year but at any time.”

The service will be available to watch and download via www.nnuhcharity.org.uk or https://www.facebook.com/nnuhcharity1

Police shut down unlicensed music event, Ashwicken

A man has been arrested and sound equipment seized after police shut down an illegal gathering near King’s Lynn earlier this morning (Sunday 23 August 2020).

David White, NNUH Chairman, said: “We want to recognise the outstanding efforts of our exceptional staff who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to keep our patients safe and well during these unprecedented times.

“I am amazed and humbled by the hard work carried out at all levels

Sheringham - To Let

Police were called shortly after 1am by a member of the public reporting a suspected rave at Ashwicken. Officers arrived on scene and discovered approximately 70 people on land near to Bawsey Pitts in the early stages of an unlicensed music event.

Roads accessing the area were blocked by police cars before officers went on to the site at about 3am. The music was switched off at police direction at 3.15am.

Generators and sound equipment were seized and a 31-year-old man from King’s Lynn was arrested on suspicion of organising the event. The man was taken to King’s Lynn Police Investigation Centre where he remains in custody and will be questioned.

Assistant Chief Constable Julie Wvendth said: "These events are not only illegal and unsafe, they also cause unnecessary damage and disruption. Where we can prevent, disrupt or stop a rave taking place, we will do everything within our power to do this, providing it’s in the best interests of all concerned.”

Earlier this month, the government announced tougher measures targeting the most serious breaches of the public health regulations introduced to help stop the spread of coronavirus. New legislation, which comes into effect on Friday (28 August), will see organisers of illegal raves face a £10,000 fine while those who attend will be liable for £100 fines.

ACC Wvendth added: "Coronavirus is still with us and continues to be a real threat. Young people are not immune to this threat and we would urge them to think twice before attending such events which are unsafe and carry a significant risk of transmitting the virus.

"The key to stopping these events is early intelligence and information from our communities. We’re grateful to the local resident who called police after hearing loud music and noticed several cars heading to the area. The prompt call meant we were able to respond effectively and stop the event before more people were able to attend.”

Remote witnessing of Wills by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr The law of Wills in England and Wales is to be amended to allow the remote electronic witnessing of Wills under certain conditions. A Statutory Instrument under the Electronic Communications Act 2000 will implement the change. The news has been cautiously welcomed in the legal press. Currently, under the 1837 Wills Act, a Will must be executed by the Testator (i.e. the person making the Will), ‘in the presence’ of two witnesses, present at the same time.

Some Testators have already used remote videomeeting platforms to arrange the execution of their new Will, hoping that the phrase ‘in the presence of’ would later be interpreted by the courts to include virtual-witnessing via electronic link. There is old case law stating that the witnessing ‘in line of sight’ is valid. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has now declared that Wills and Codicils witnesses by video link will be upheld, as long as the quality of the sound and video is sufficient for the parties to see and hear what is happening at the time. The new law is to last for two years and is retrospective from 31st January 2020. Remote witnessing is only being authorised in an emergency, as ‘a last resort’, and Testators are being asked to arrange the physical witnessing of Wills where it is safe to do so. Strict precautions must be taken to deter fraud or undue influence.

The MoJ recommends that Testators at a remotelywitnessed Will signing should make a formal statement that ‘I, full name, wish to make a Will of my own free will and sign it here before witnesses, who are witnessing me doing it remotely’. Signatures must be ‘wet’. The whole process should be recorded

and the recording retained along with the Will.

The Will, signed remotely by the Testator, then needs to be sent physically to both of the two witnesses, who should sign and write their name, address and occupation in the traditional way.

For a person who is shielding, the question of how to get the Will to the witnesses remains a problem. Either they need to go out of the house to post it, or someone will need to collect it, in which case they could probably have arranged for witnesses to see them sign the Will in person, through an open door or window.

Arguably, it was not necessary to bring in these changes. To meet the demand for Wills, and to stick to social-distancing guidelines during lockdown, solicitors have had to find inventive new ways of getting Wills signed, with neighbours witnessing Wills over the garden fence and documents passed between cars 2 metres apart.

The legal profession lobbied for judicial powers to allow Wills, where formal signing procedures were not met, but where otherwise the legal requirements were met. This would have required primary legislation, which would have meant an Act of Parliament; so rather, these temporary remotewitnessing measures were introduced.

Guidance has been issued to minimise unintended consequences and to ensure validity. However, there are still many unanswered questions, such as: what if the Testator dies whilst the Will is being posted to the two witnesses for them to sign? The new law will inevitably create an increase in disputes after the person has died, and evidence of remote witnessing is unlikely to be as convincing as

it would be in person.

For those with no disability or vulnerability this new option could be a great help, although when you look at the subsequent procedures required, you may well think that it is just easier to find two independent witnesses and sign within each other’s ‘line of sight’ in a single step, in the time-honoured fashion. Some lawyers have praised the changes saying that, at last, the legal profession is moving with the times and embracing modern technology. I have severe misgivings should the remote witnessing process be used by the vulnerable, and see too many ways in which abuse could arise.

What is clear is that new robust reforms for the signing of Wills are needed and that making these changes to the law in times of a pandemic is far from ideal. Overwhelming support for emergency services sunflower campaign

Sunflowers have been blooming across Norfolk after the emergency services sunflower campaign received overwhelming support.

Working together with the East of England Ambulance Service, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and other public service partners, Norfolk Police launched the Sunflower campaign to spread some positivity and happiness during lockdown.

To complement the NHS Rainbow campaign and to demonstrate how the blue light services and other agencies have been working together to help protect and support the NHS during the Covid-19 crisis, communities were encouraged to display sunflower creations in their windows. Homes which were seen displaying their sunflowers by officers whilst on patrol received sunflower seeds through the door which could be planted.

for East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trusts (EEAST), said: "We are very pleased to have supported this very worthwhile campaign that has given a great deal of pleasure and interest to the people of Norfolk.”

sunflower artwork popping up in windows and on social media and, with many thousands of seeds distributed around Norfolk, we now get to enjoy the sight of these happy flowers blooming and thriving - a reminder of how our county’s communities have stood together even when they have had to remain apart.” Andrew Barlow, Community Response Manager

More than 45 thousand sunflower seeds, donated by Woodgate Nursery in Aylsham and the Co-op, were distributed to homes across the county and sunflowers have been seen blooming across villages and towns.

Norfolk’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer Tim Edwards said: "Our staff were pleased to get involved in this project and enjoyed seeing the efforts of our local communities when we were out and about in our daily work. Norfolk has really pulled together during this pandemic and we have seen some wonderful examples of community spirit. We are pleased that the sunflowers added a touch of brightness during a difficult time for all.”

• FREE measuring and FREE Estimating • free local delivery!

Schools across Norfolk also got involved with hundreds of children creating bright sunflower displays.

Assistant Chief Constable Julie Wvendth said: "The sunflower campaign was launched to show our gratitude to our local communities who listened to the Government guidance to stay at home in order to help protect the NHS and save lives during lockdown. We wanted to say thank you and show solidarity for the stay at home message in support of the emergency services and all key workers. "So, we asked communities to create sunflowers which they could display alongside their rainbows as a symbol of hope for the future, whilst giving them something to look forward to by watching their sunflowers grow – and we have been overwhelmed by the response. I would like to thank all of the businesses who donated sunflower seeds to the campaign and to the hundreds of people who have sent us pictures of their beautiful creations. I have loved seeing them all. As we continue to move through the next phases of social distancing, the sight of sunflowers growing across the county serves as a reminder of the community’s ongoing support of the NHS, Emergency Services and key workers during the current pandemic and is a symbol of hope for the months ahead.”

Norfolk’s Police ad Crime Commissioner, Lorne Green, said: "As well as recognising and showing appreciation for the efforts of key workers, including our emergency services, during the pandemic, the sunflower campaign has helped spread some positive cheer and sunshine across the county during these challenging months. Keeping your pet smiling!

We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over 3 years old. Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. Caught early gingivitis can be reversed, however, over time it progresses to periodontitis with tooth loss and infections of the tooth, gum and jaw bone, with a risk of infection spreading to other organs via the bloodstream.

Dental disease in cats poses particular challenges as they also suffer from chronic gingivostomatitis, a disease where inflammation spreads from the gums to the rest of the mouth. In this condition the body mounts an over-exaggerated immune response to tartar and plaque causing painful inflammation. Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and

immunosuppression, and should be discussed with your vet. Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect Before large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum) causing teeth to fracture. Advanced lesions can be detected by visual inspection, however, early lesions are very painful but only detected by specialised dental x-ray and therefore dental x-rays are always recommended.

When detected early dental disease can often be treated with brushing, however, as disease progresses treatment requires antibiotics, scale and polishing and even extractions. Not all dental treatments are the same and dental treatment should involve a thorough examination under general anaesthesia where every tooth is examined visually and with a special probe. Dental X-rays should be performed to assess the extent of disease below the gum line in the root / socket area as this is invisible to the naked eye. These

After investigations determine the extent of disease and ideal treatment options. At Toll Barn we have a fully equipped dental suite including dental x-ray and our in-house vets have a particular interest in dentistry and are always happy to discuss treatment and prevention options for your pet.

Prevention is always better than cure and our team of qualified veterinary nurses are happy to provide our clients with free of charge dental appointments to show you how to provide the best dental care for your pet. Raised beds are a great way of growing a wide range of plants and are particularly popular for growing fruit and vegetables

However, if you only have a small area then you can adapt them for whatever you would like to grow. They can also be raised higher for people who need to work at waist height.

The beds can be made out of a wide range of materials from wooden planks, sleepers, bricks, concrete blocks anything that is robust enough to hold a large amount of soil.

If you are thinking of using wood then this needs to be tanalised, to help prevent rotting. Be aware that the old railway sleepers may have formaldehyde in them, which will leech out into the soil.

I first came across raised beds when the RHS promoted the Three Metre Square bed, this was something I adopted for schools with restricted space. The size of all raised beds needs to be no more than 1.2 metres wide, in order that you can work them from both sides. They can be as long as you would like them, also as deep as you require them. Some people use condemned scaffold boards.

The advantages of raised beds are that you do not have to dig them every time. They improve soil drainage so you can work on them anytime of the year, they create more warmth and you can bring in new soil if yours is unworkable. They are easier to maintain, concentrating soil improvement by adding mulch, manure and compost. Crops can be planted closer, to give higher yields, crop rotation can be practised easily and crops can be protected with netting and fleece much easier.

The disadvantages of these beds are they dry out rapidly in hot weather, good topsoil is required and nutrients can leech away. Closer planting can lead to more diseases such as damping off or rotting of young plants and more slugs at the edges of the boards. Wooden structures will rot over time.

For more information: Look on the Garden Organic or Royal Horticultural Society websites, most definitely the advantages outweigh the disadvantages especially if your soil is not very fertile and workable.

Sheringham Independent September 2020

LANGHAM DOME NEWS www.langhamdome.org

The Dome has remained closed for the months of April to July inclusive. Assessing the latest government advice we still have to decide whether we can open sometime August, and then in September and October. The Dome is very small and one issue is that even if we are allowed to open, but the 1+M social distancing and sanitisation of everything a visitor may have touched rules are maintained we would be limited to only 6-8 visitors at a time to the Dome itself. A possible solution, which we think could meet all the rules and keep our staff and visitors safe, may be to pre-book visits eg in one to one and a half hour slots. The website (link above) is regularly updated, so please refer to that for the latest Dome news and before making a wasted journey expecting to find us open or only opening against bookings.

Preparatory work has been completed for mounting of the full size replica Spitfire outside the Dome - with the foundations and

mounting now installed as you can see from this picture. If all goes well it should have the Spitfire mounted on it in August, with CCTV security coverage. However the formal unveiling and dedication ceremony will only take place once the Dome can re-open normally - hopefully in April 2021.

Whether we are fully open or not we are still planning to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain by holding the B of B Prize Draw in the Dome grounds at noon on 13 September. With the shut down the Draw is now a very important part of our fund raising for this year with great prizes that include a Tiger Moth flight from Langham and also a helicopter flight, as well as a flight simulator experience and a £50.00 cash prize. We have also been donated a large framed Spitfire print painted by artist Barrie Clark - a very appropriate prize for this anniversary. There are a host of other prizes. If you have not yet bought Draw tickets please come along at any

time after 1030 on 13th September to buy them on the day. However we hope that Lynx readers will support us by purchasing tickets in advance and paying by BACS or cheque, either on-line by contacting admin@langhamome.org (please e-mail initially and we will get back to you with payment and ticket details), or by telephone to John Blakeley on 01263 861008. Books of 5 tickets cost just £5.00. All winners will be notified.

Visitors to the Dome can see exhibits and films which relate to the various Squadrons that served at Langham during WW2.

Lanham Dome Spitfire Memorial

As you know from your previous articles, we have been fund raising and planning for some time to place a replica Spitfire as a memorial on a plinth outside the Dome, This was originally planned for earlier this year, but the work on strengthening the aircraft and the external mounting infrastructure was delayed by COVID 19. However, yesterday it all came together and as you can see from the attached pictures (taken by me and you are welcome to use them – more are available) we now have a very impressive Spitfire replica on display. We will be taking it down in late October for winter storage and the formal dedication ceremony as a memorial to the pilot, Richard Younghusband, who was killed in 1953 flying a Spitfire from RAF Langham is being planned for Spring 2021.

Natural healing in Holt

With growing evidence supporting the benefits of CBD oil, Amber Organics’ arrival in Holt provides an opportunity to find out more about this natural wellbeing supplement.

With a number of scientific studies underway to examine CBD’s potential to treat many serious conditions including arthritis, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and cancer, one of the most common uses for CBD oil is for pain relief. From minor aches and discomfort to treating pain caused by chronic conditions, it is believed to interact with the body’s own endocannabinoid system to help reduce, inflammation, alleviate pain and balance our body’s own neurological systems.

CBD oil has never been far from the headlines in recent years, but last autumn a landmark court case saw the product classified as a food supplement. CBD stands for cannabidiol which is naturally found in the flowers and leaves of hemp plants but, unlike marijuana, contains less than 0.2% THC. Non-addictive, legal and safe, the benefits of CBD oil are said to be far-reaching – from relieving chronic pain and tackling mental health conditions, to treating the symptoms of long-term conditions such as multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.

In the past year, the number of people turning to CBD oil Meet the team at Amber Organics as an alternative remedy has grown hugely and CBD oil is now available at Amber Organics in Holt’s Franklyn’s Yard, off Albert Street Car Park, as a food supplement. Alongside a range of natural bamboo and hemp products, the company stocks a range of organic, ethically and sustainably sourced CBD oil products which contain phytonutrients, essential fatty acids, flavonoids and antioxidants, and can advise on suggested dosage and use of these. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

There is growing evidence that CBD oil can be used in the treatment of some mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety. It has been shown to help those suffering with clinical depression due to its effect on serotonin levels. CBD products can also be applied to the skin topically and are believed to repair damage caused by UV exposure, environmental pollutants, help treat acne and psoriasis.

For those looking for a natural alternative to treat many conditions, CBD oil could be a game-changer with the potential to help many users relieve their symptoms.

Wells Mens Shed

The Wells Mens Shed was poised for some exciting developments when we were rudely interrupted by the ‘Covid’. The abrupt closure meant everything was put on hold. Now with the easing of some lockdown restrictions, the Shed is coming to life again. Most of the members fell into the vulnerable ‘Stay at home’ categories so it’s meant we have been confined to working in our own satellite sheds. For example one of our Shedders has made a near neighbour a Picket Fence for their raised vegetable garden, a useful way of keeping their dog from digging up the produce! Recycling several old pallets and some timber and arranging the pickets in a ‘perfectly socially distanced’ manner looks the part, although the dog might not agree!

Terry Kane, Chairman of Wells Mens Shed said “The Wells Mens Shed was just becoming established within the Wells Community when the lockdown occurred. We were set to expand our activities considerably. Enforced isolation has reinforced the true value of the Shed in supporting the wellbeing of our members and these grants and the donation of the Shipping Container from the Carter Group, will elevate our operations considerably. We are grateful for the generous support from these Companies and

A key element of the Mens Shed is that it acts as an important social centre where, mostly men, meet over a cuppa and work on personal as well as community projects. We have all missed the banter and spirit of the Shed which is so important to everyone’s wellbeing.

Coinciding with this generous donation from the Carter Group we were awarded two grants by the Central England Co-operative Community Fund and Community Action Norfolk (CAN). Firstly, the Central England Co-operative Community Fund granted an award to purchase a range of cordless hand tools which will significantly increase our productivity. The CAN award was

The Wells Mens Shed is still in its infancy and we have been developing our site in the grounds of our hosts, the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway. The Shed is a former construction site Portakabin office which we have adapted to suit our activities, however, we do not have mains electricity so we are limited to what we can achieve and most of the activities to date have been based around traditional woodworking projects utilising reclaimed timber and pallets. Our longer term goal is to embrace green technology and generate our own electricity thereby becoming self sufficient.

We were just about to take delivery of a 20ft Container to sit along side the Portakabin when lockdown was announced. The main purpose this Container was to transform it into a metalwork shop thereby extending our range of activities. Major East of England Contractor, the R G Carter Group have generously donated a Shipping Container to the Wells Men’s Shed for this purpose. Supporting local communities is a key part of the values of the Carter Group and the Shedders are grateful for this critical addition to the Shed, which almost doubles our work space. Work will now begin on the refit.

TONKA BEAN CRÈME BRÛLÉE A dessert to literally die for (though don’t worry, ours is quite safe!)

Tonka beans, harvested ecologically from deep within the Amazon, are a hugely sought-after delicacy throughout the world for their unique, intense flavour. However they also contain a fair amount of coumarin, a toxin that can actually kill you if eaten in quantity. “As long as you don’t use a copious amount of it – obviously a copious amount could cause death – it really is delicious,” says Thomas Raquel, head pastry chef at the Michelin-starred Le Bernardin in New York. In fact it’s banned in the US, so M. Raquel must have a reliable ‘source’ from South America that we’ll say no more about… Our chefs don’t have to smuggle tonka beans in from the windfarms after dark as they are quite legal in the UK. So all the wonderful flavours are available for you to try in Reis’ amazing crème brulee.

We are open for dinner every night from 5pm

with our a la carte menu and pizzas on the lawn, although we are always busy so best to book your table on 01263 512412. And of course afternoon tea every day 2 – 4.30pm!

Spring Notes from the Commons

These spring notes have been delayed as the Covid-19 lockdown interrupted publication of ‘The Sheringham Independent’. While on lockdown the daily walks allowed visits to the Commons and most of it was in excellent weather. The following observations and sightings cover the period through March, April and May which have been reported to the Beeston Common website (www.beestoncommon.org.uk), mainly by regular contributor Mark Clements and myself.

Bees, including a dark form female were nectaring on Green Alkanet, as were its host, the Hairy-footed Flower Bee (Apr 12). The Mourning Bee is a cleptoparasite ie laying its eggs in the nests of its host and its larvae on hatching eats the hostegg or grub and then consumes the stored pollen. A large parasitic wasp, Ichneumon xanthorius, was also present as was a strange looking ‘long-nosed’ hoverfly, Rhingia campestris. Three Red Kites came over the Common within a few minutes of each other (Apr 15) and the following day (Apr 16) a Goshawk was seen off by a female Sparrowhawk, which was nesting nearby. A male Ring Ouzel flew south (Apr 23) and a Green Hairstreak was reported.

Mourning Bee

Surrey. Another new-comer was found the following day (May 06) – the Ornate Shieldbug. This insect has been in the UK since 1997 but The first week of March three Red Kites drifted was only present along a coastal fringe of over and a hybrid Carrion Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex until recently x Hooded Crow were and had reached the London area in 2019. Supervision of care staff. • Accounting for cash collected from clients and banking. • Ordering of supplies and stock control. • Ensuring service user files are up-to-date and filed in accordance with best practice.

So what areas we commonly used ultrasound for-

1) Injections in temples, forehead, noses, nose to mouth lines and lips most commonly, as these can be high-risk areas. There is a perception amongst the novice injectors that lip injections or nose to mouth line area are easy. In reality this can be a very tricky treatment to get right and there is a high risk of complications here because of the variations in anatomy.

Wells RNLI aid two persons stranded in the marshes Wells Inshore Lifeboat was paged at 8:27pm by Humber Coastguard to a 999-call received from two persons cut off in the marshes between Stiffkey and Wells on a flooding spring tide.

Wells Inshore Lifeboat was paged at 8:27pm by Humber Coast Guard to a 999-call received from two persons cut off in the marshes between Stiffkey and Wells on a flooding spring tide.

The Inshore Lifeboat with a crew of three launched outside the Boathouse at 8:41pm and proceeded towards Cabbage Creek in the marshes – this being the last known position of the two persons.

The Inshore Lifeboat arrived on scene at 8:49 pm and commenced a search of the creeks. The

two persons could not be located and did not respond to the crew calling / flashing the boats handheld torches.

The coastguard team were at the local vantage point and could not sight the two persons either.

The coastguard took a further 999 call from the two persons and they advised that they had been forced to move in a North Westerly direction to get to higher ground – they also advised they were running low on the battery on their phone and not getting good reception . At 8:53 pm the Inshore Lifeboat put a crew member on the marshes to the South of the East Hills and he started a search on foot using a high-powered torch.

At 9.30 pm after an extensive search on foot of

the area the crew member on the marsh spotted the mobile phone light of the two missing persons, who were on the beach to the North side of the East Hills. At 9:35 pm he met up with them and ascertained they were both well and not requiring any medical assistance.

The inshore Lifeboat went quickly to their location and picked them all up at 9.49 pm and ferried them to the boathouse where they were met by the local Coastguard team.

The two persons then made it back to their car which was in Wells.

The inshore lifeboat was rehoused and refuelled and back on service at 10:20 pm

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have been very busy on the homing front with all the kittens that came to us via our friend during lockdown, now re-homed. Several other cats have also either left for new homes or will be leaving by the time you read this. The “cat” phone has certainly been extremely busy so please be patient if you do call and Stephanie cannot get back to you straight away.

One of the ladies who has fostered for us for many years has sadly had to give up her role due to ill health. We thank Pauline for all the care she has given to the cats over the years and wish her well for the future. Fortunately, Caroline volunteered to have Pauline’s two pens, and these have already been moved to their new location.

One very important rule we follow when taking stray cats and kittens into care (also young kittens from feral colonies) is to get some of them blood tested for FIV/FELV. As also mentioned before, we do not mix cats from separate sources because this prevents cross infections occurring. During lockdown we took in a stray cat who did test positive for FIV, so had he been put in an area with other cats he could have passed this on to them. This lovely lad was very affectionate but did not take kindly to being confined to a cat pen. Fortunately, we do have contact with another rescue centre which has a large confined area specifically for housing FIV positive cats. He settled in there very quickly, but not for long, as he was chosen by someone happy to give him a home where he would not have contact with other cats. Although we do not see FIV cats that often, we do know that the local branch of

All aspects of Home Improvement

clint_brown_1@hotmail.com

RSPCA recently had three available for homing. Mixing cats that have not been tested could result in more cats being infected.

Also during lockdown we took in, via local vets, a lovely stray cat that had broken his leg in two places. Humphrey’s leg was pinned, and he was put on cage rest to give it time to heal. He made very good progress apart from some damage to his tail. This was not considered to be a serious problem and Humphrey is one of the lucky cats to have left us recently, this time to one of the vets involved in his treatment. He is a very lovable cat and she could not resist him.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Stay on Possession Proceedings Extended Again

Landlord & Tenant Update: by Shaun Taylor

The Government brought in emergency legislation on 27 March 2020 preventing Landlords from obtaining possession of properties or enforcing possession orders already obtained for a period of 90 days. We previously reported on this in June 2020 when the Government announced it would extend the stay for a further eight weeks until 23 August 2020.

Whilst the stay was welcomed by millions of Tenants throughout the UK, Landlords were unable to obtain possession of their premises regardless of the type or severity of a Tenant’s breaches. However, we recently reported that from 24 August 2020 Landlords would be

able to continue with existing proceedings or commence fresh possession proceedings against their Tenants.

On Friday 21 August 2020, just three days before the new legislation was due to come into effect, the Government made a complete U-turn and has extended the stay on possession proceedings for a further four weeks, until 20 September 2020. Therefore, Landlords will not be able to continue with existing proceedings or commence fresh possession proceedings until further notice.

The Government’s last minute change has created frustration amongst Landlords throughout the UK. Whilst several issues with Tenants have arisen due to the pandemic, Landlords are now left in a position where they are unable to take any action to deal with issues that are not related to Covid-19.

The additional extension is of course welcomed by Tenants who are no longer subject to an immediate threat of eviction during these uncertain times. However, this extension is only a temporary measure. The Government will now be required to use these additional four weeks to create robust plans and consider how it can achieve a balance between the interests of both Landlords and Tenants to gradually bring the country back to some form of ‘normality’ during the

exceptional circumstances that the nation finds itself in.

Whilst the current position prevents Landlords from obtaining possession of their property if the Tenants fall behind with rent, Landlords are still free to pursue Tenants for rent arrears by way of a money claim which may be a viable option. Our litigation team are able to offer specialist guidance on taking such action.

If you are a landlord, tenant or homeowner concerned about the current legislation and your situation, our dedicated team is on hand to provide expert advice to you.

For more information or to discuss your individual circumstances in further detail, contact us today on 01263 823398, email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit our website: www.clapham-collinge.co.uk. Keep Seals Safe from Flying Rings – Campaign Ramped Up! to fall off because the wound was so deep and so horrible. This poor animal had suffered because someone had bought a cheap flying ring” The sad thing is this is still happening now. Photographer Andrew Terrell took this photo on Horsey beach a just few days ago.

Courtesy of Andrew Terrell

A campaign started by animal lover Jenny Hobson and launched by the Norfolk charity ‘Friends of Horsey Seals’, is being extended. It aims to stop seals being injured and sometimes killed by Frisbee type flying rings a popular beach toy.

One of the many grey seals discovered with one of these rings stuck around her neck was nicknamed Mrs Frisbee. She had horrific injuries. She was rescued by the Friends of Horsey Seals and nursed back to health at the RSPCA hospital at East Winch near Kings Lynn. But the fear is many others, which are facing infection and starvation, are never discovered.

Alison Charles, Manager of RSPCA Wildlife Hospital, Norfolk, would be happy to see flying rings not being produced anymore. She says “ We are not anti-fun, but I wish people would not take them onto the beach but rather buy solid discs instead. It’s just horrendous, I removed a ring from one seal and I thought her head was going

The problem is that seals are very curious creatures. If they come across something new floating in the water they will swim round it, play with it and sometimes try and swim through it. If it gets around their neck, especially if they are young, the object will eventually become embedded in their flesh as they grow, causing terrible wounds, and sometimes death.

Now a brand new display has been created to make people more aware of what they can do to help stop this sort of thing happening. The life-size seal with a flying ring embedded in its neck has been designed and created by local artist Rebecca Elliott, with the help of volunteer Bridget Villatora. Cromer Town Council provided funding for it.

It sits on a base of flying rings cut in half, which illustrates that this is the only way these rings can

be made harmless to seals.

The main purpose of the enhanced 2020 flying rings awareness campaign is to highlight how damaging these beach toys can be to all sea life but especially to seals. It is hoped, as Covid 19 restrictions ease that the this new display will highlight the in problem along with some educational leaflets and posters carrying the message: ‘Please don’t throw flying rings on the beach or in the sea!’

The Flying Rings campaigners, led by co-ordinator Jenny Hobson from Kings Lynn has already been successful in persuading some local shops and suppliers to stop selling these plastic rings as beach toys.

The campaign is being supported by the RSPCA, The Friends of Horsey Seals, British Divers, Marine & Wildlife Rescue, Sea-Changers and Councils along the Norfolk coast from Great Yarmouth to King’s Lynn.

Leisure Centre Swimming Pools to Reopen

Everyone Active’s swimming pools across North Norfolk, managed in partnership with North Norfolk District Council, are set to reopen in August after being closed for almost five months due to Coronavirus.

Following the successful reopening of gyms and group exercise studios last month, Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre and Victory Swim and Fitness Centre will reopen their pools for bookable lane swimming on August 20. Swimming lessons will commence on August 22.

The Government update on 9 July confirmed leisure facilities were now safe to reopen, with strict operational measures in place. A variety of measures have been introduced across the facilities. These include booking in advance for sessions and fewer lessons within the pool at any one time, to allow for both children and swimming teachers to social distance. Lesson times will be staggered so there will be fewer classes starting and finishing at the same time and only one parent/guardian is asked to attend with a child, to reduce the number of people in the centre. Full details on Everyone Active’s reopening measures can be found here.

North Norfolk District Council is urging people to be extremely cautious when visiting the beach. With many people choosing to enjoy ‘staycations’ and make day trips to the area, local beaches will be busy and it is more important than ever to respect the sea, and to be aware of your surroundings to accommodate social distancing guidance.

People who regularly visit the beach and enjoy the sea will know how fast the tides can come in, or how quickly the sea conditions can change, but it is crucial that visitors understand the risks presented by the sea and cliffs and know what to do in an emergency.

People are reminded that they should not climb or dig around the base of the cliffs. Cliffs should not be used as quick access to the beach, as they are extremely fragile and could slip at any moment. In the last 12 months alone, our cliffs have experienced several major slips, therefore we must urge people to stay safe and avoid causing further instability. We would also remind people that cliff jumping (or jumping from structures, such as Cromer Pier, which is not permitted under any circumstances), especially as there is limited or no lifeguard presence, is extremely dangerous, and may result in serious injury. Swimmers enjoying the sea should also be mindful of rip tides or unexpected currents to take hold and render swimmers unable to get back to safety and should not use inflatables on the sea.

In recent days there have been a number of emergencies along the North Norfolk coast involving HM Coastguard and the RNLI lifeboats with other emergency services responding to incidents in the sea and on our cliffs and we want people to stay safe and enjoy themselves without placing strain on the emergency services.

Beach hut owners have been able to enjoy using their huts and chalets again, however for this year, given the large numbers of visitors and the need to facilitate social distancing on narrow promenade areas, we ask that hut and chalet owners either sit inside their huts and chalets, or on the beach. This allows passers-by, particularly wheelchair users or pushchairs, to pass at a safe distance.

We want visitors to the beach to enjoy themselves and the hot weather safely. Drink water regularly to avoid dehydration, avoid the sun during peak hours and please use appropriate SPF to avoid sunburn. The NHS has a

Cllr Virginia Gay, NNDC’s Portfolio holder for Culture and Wellbeing, commented: “It is such good news that swimming will be back soon both at the Victory and at Splash. Swimming is three things in one - a pleasure, an exercise and a vital skill. We need it now more than ever.

Stuart Jardine, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “After a successful reopening of our gyms and studios, we’re pleased to take the next step in our phased reopening plan and get everyone active in our swimming pools again! “Ensuring we maintain a safe environment for our colleagues and customers is our number one priority and we have carefully considered the strict measurements to ensure we adhere to the guidance. We encourage visitors to read through the changes we are making so we can maintain a safe environment for everyone. “Thank you to everyone for their patience during this time.

comprehensive guide for more advice on coping in hot weather.

Please use this advice and look out for vulnerable friends and family members, such as the elderly or children. If you do decide to go into the sea, the RNLI and HM Coastguard are advising the public not to use inflatables at all and for everyone, especially parents, planning a visit to a beach or the coast to follow this safety advice:

• Have a plan - check the weather forecast, tide times and read local hazard signage • Keep a close eye on your family – on the beach and in the water • Do not allow members of your family to swim alone • Do not use inflatables • If you fall into the water unexpectedly, FLOAT TO LIVE. Fight your instinct to thrash around, lean back, extend your arms and legs, and float • In an emergency dial 999, and ask for the Coastguard

Cllr Sarah BĂźtikofer, Leader of the District Council said: “We want our local residents and visitors to enjoy the fantastic coastline and many blue flag beaches we have here in North Norfolk over the summer. We understand people are here to have fun and particularly with the weather forecast over the next few days relax and enjoy themselves. At the moment we have large numbers of people, many of whom don’t know our coastline, going to the beach. I would urge everyone to familiarise themselves with some basic advice about how to stay safe in and near the water, on cliffs and in the heat, and know how to summon assistance in case of an emergencyâ€?.
