“The team here are doing a great job and I’m delighted to be joining them at this busy time” said Graham, adding, “My second day proved to be the busiest standard day in the line’s history with over 1,500 tickets sold and September sees the return of the popular Autumn Steam Gala on 3rd, 4th and 5th and the spectacular Forties Weekend on 18th and 19th so it’s an exciting time to get on board.”

Dear Jo,

West Runton Village Car Park I am writing to express my deep concern at the way the West Runton village community and businesses have been affected by the decision of Runton parish Council not to renew their lease on the village car park. The car park served many villagers, visitors and workers who had nowhere else to park. The decision was taken by councillors without consultation with those that relied on the car park, and they have no idea or concern of the impact the closure has had on so many people. I attended a recent Parish Council meeting in the hope of persuading them to think again about this matter. I was disappointed and somewhat shocked at the attitude of the councillors to this serious matter. The Chairman very rudely uttered the comment "Rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb" when he produced a letter from the car park landowners. The council say that their decision is financially based - I beg to differ. Their decision was made because the matter does not affect them! They have adequate parking at their homes and are too far removed from their constituents to understand their needs. Maybe it is time for them to consider their reasons for being councillors and exactly who's interests they are serving. Yours Mike Ashwell, East Runton Resident

Graham has spent the last two years at Didcot Railway Centre as Head of Visitor Experience and Marketing where he helped increase numbers, revenue and visitor satisfaction at the 21-acre living museum. His career also includes spells at the Kent & East Sussex Railway and Royal Engineers Museum as well as 16 years as Visitor Centre Manager at Shepherd Neame – Britain’s Oldest Brewer.

North Norfolk Railway Managing Director, Hugh Harkett, commented, “We are very pleased to welcome Graham to the senior management group at the railway, he has a wealth of commercial experience in the tourism and heritage sectors which will help us as we recover from Covid and grow the business.”

The railway’s steam and heritage diesel trains run daily until 30 September and on most days in October – advance booking is strongly recommended, and full details of timetables, special events and other services can be found at

A Note from the editor

Success for Wherry Maud Trust Crowdfunding Campaign

So, that’s Summer done and dusted and now we are into the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ or more like scattered showers and a stiff northerly!

#money4maud

With her distinctive black sail, Wherry Maud is one of Norfolk’s best loved sights on the Norfolk Broads. The only remaining trading wherry of typical construction, she is maintained by Wherry Maud Trust’s team of dedicated volunteers who run trips throughout the year, keeping alive a significant part of the history and culture of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads.

North Norfolk Railway are to hold their 1940s weekend on the 18th/19th September, although there will be no street entertainment this year, it is good to see a gradual return of this popular event and I’m sure there will be lots of people dressing up and getting into the spirit of things.

The Wherry Maud Trust campaign to raise money for a new support boat for Maud began in May 2021 and ran until the end of July. The full £10,500 needed was raised.

Holt’s Sunday Markets continue on the first Sunday of the month from September, a must for lovers of street food and leisurely retail therapy seekers. Ideal for early Christmas shopping, (I know, but it is only just over three months away!).

The final £2,000 came from two grants of £1,000 each from Love the Broads and The Lady Hind Trust.

Whatever you are doing, enjoy your September magazine. Keep safe and well. Jo – Editor.

Wherry Maud Trust extends grateful thanks for the grants and to all those individuals who donated during the campaign. A suitable boat has now been purchased.

Even though we have achieved our objective of raising the £10,500 Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 for the tender magazines. our fundraising Month Copy deadline Publishing date efforts will October Tuesday 28th September Friday 8th October remain active, November Tuesday 26th October Friday 5th November and people December Tuesday 30th November Friday 10th December can continue to make donations to help secure the future of Maud by clicking the Donate button on the home page of wherrymaudtrust.org. The next two challenges for the Trust will be Maud’s major maintenance in September and a drive for new members.

To receive regular updates about Maud why not join Wherry Maud Trust (£15 per annum) and look forward to a sociable sail in her? The membership form is on wherrymaudtrust.org.

Safer Seals Campaign Raises Funds for RSPCA Seal Rescue

North Norfolk District Council’s Safer Seals campaigning has raised £488.27 to be donated to the RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre.

The money will be donated to East Winch RSPCA to continue their important work caring for marine mammals and seals like Mrs Vicar, who was rescued by Friends of Horsey Seals with a flying ring trapped around her neck and taken to the centre. After many months of delicate and specialist rehabilitation to recover from her wounds, she was healthy enough to be released back into the water thanks to the care provided. The Safer Seals Tour was kindly joined by Friends of Horsey Seals to talk to the general public about seal safety in the district and the dangers of flying rings. The tour visited Cromer, Sheringham, Sea Palling and Mundesley as part of the Council’s commitments to the Blue Flag beach criteria for improving the stretches of coast.

and that of seal protection agencies in the district by giving these creatures a wide berth when they see them on our beaches, avoiding the use of hollow flying rings that can get trapped around their necks and by keeping controls of their dogs when around seals.”

Bloomin’ Marvellous

Age Concern North Norfolk is your friendly local Charity offering support for older people, their families and carers, based in Sheringham.

Recently we had a visit from “Blooming Blooms” where older folk were encouraged in an afternoon’s activity session to try their hands at flower arranging.

Alongside talking to the public, a flying ring amnesty was held and any harmful rings could be traded in for a 100% recyclable bamboo Frisbee, which pose no threat to the marine mammals if they are lost to the sea.

Liz Withington from Dementia Friendly Sheringham commented: ‘The wonderful thing about an independent high street and local businesses is how they are prepared to get involved and support our community. Well done Karen Mallett at Blooming Blooms. I’m sure these ladies’ spirits would have been truly lifted. Also great to see Age Concern North Norfolk up and running and supporting the community again after COVID-19. They are looking for trustees to drive this great service forward if you have the time and interest.’

Visitors to the beaches could also make a personal pledge to be conscious of the seals when visiting the coast and be given a small seal plushy toy in return

Cllr. Nigel Lloyd, portfolio holder for the Environment said: “I am hopeful that our safer seals campaign reached out to as many people as possible. These beautiful creatures have been part of our local environment for thousands of years, we therefore have a moral duty to do all we can to protect them.

Combating social isolation and loneliness in Breckland and North Norfolk

It’s estimated that of a population of about 900,000 in Norfolk, the number of lonely or socially isolated people stands at 40,000. That’s about 4.5 per-cent. And it’s the impact of being socially isolated on the individual’s physical health and mental wellbeing that is of greatest concern.

Dereham-based charity Community Action Norfolk (CAN) is working with partner charity Future Projects in combating social isolation in the Breckland and North Norfolk districts of the county. The project, known as CANConnect, aims to help people connect with activities, events and other people in or near their locality, as well as providing individuals with one-to-one support in identifying and achieving their personal goals.

CANConnect also provides support for the community itself, helping organisations and people make the places where we live stronger, friendlier, and more resilient.

And to do this, the project needs volunteers in supporting and dealing with people’s anxieties and fears about going outside on their own, especially post-pandemic.

“Sometimes we could all do with a little support to help make life ‘click’ and

re-discover our confidence” explains CAN’s Chief Executive Officer Rik Martin. “So we are asking anyone in the Breckland and North Norfolk areas, who may be able to offer time to help people on one-to-one basis, to get in touch. With their support individuals can access more of what their community has to offer, helping make the places where we live stronger, friendlier and more resilient.

“Norfolk has a great history of volunteers stepping forward to help, not least during the Covid pandemic, where our Good Neighbour Schemes and mutual aid groups have seen a tremendous response from individuals who have contributed to supporting vulnerable residents in their communities.”

The work has been commissioned by Norfolk County Council as part of a range of similar services across the county tackling the problems created by social isolation and loneliness.

“We delighted to be playing our part in bringing communities together through the Social Isolation project in partnership with CAN” says Daniel Childerhouse, Chief Executive of Future Projects.

Now more than ever it is important that we

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

connect to those around us and this vital service helps achieve just that. However, to do so we need volunteers to support our activity with those who would otherwise be overlooked. This is a first-class service which offers highly rewarding volunteering opportunities.”

Volunteers benefit by meeting new people, learning new skills and gaining experience in the voluntary sector. And being part of something that directly supports the community can make a real difference to people’s lives. CAN and Future Projects staff know the importance of volunteers being supported and will provide all necessary training.

Anyone interested in volunteering can visit www.canconnect.org.uk or call 01362 545020 to find out more.

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offe fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

New Theatre Project Comes to The Venue

The Venue Community and Arts Centre in Holt is soon to host a theatre show and hopes to offer theatre to the people of Holt on a regular footing. The centre in Holt has given the venture the thumbs up which will see the acclaimed Stage Direct amateur dramatics group take centre stage for two nights in September.

The long-awaited arrival of Stage Direct amateur drama group’s next exciting production is almost upon us. Featuring a double bill of comedy, comprising two one act comedies performed back-to-back. (But of course, with an interval in-between). Now we are entering post Covid times, we can announce we can bring this feast of comedy to the stage for your entertainment.

The first is called “If I Were You” written by Cromer man and amateur dramatics enthusiast David Starling, and the second comedy is called “Dedicated Sorrowers”, a published comedy, written by Sheringham man and Chairperson of Stage Direct amateur drama group, Nigel Manson. The shows will also be produced and directed by the same said duo. Nigel said “We’ve been waiting in the wings a long time for this opportunity to arise, and are delighted that we have been given this marvellous opening to show the people of Holt what Stage Direct are about”

David said, “Like every other drama group, Stage Direct have been eager to be able to

! "

tread the boards again to entertain the masses”. As a first, and with the help from The Venue, they have been given full support to go ahead with this project and look forward to welcoming the general public back again to enjoy theatre once more.

Although they have not been able to prepare and or perform during the last year and a half, Stage Direct have been kept busy and have managed to keep their acting membership on their toes by exercising their acting talents, albeit via zoom meetings.

Stage Direct has recently run a recruiting campaign to encourage new members with multifarious talents to help prop up their membership and for help with the preparations of this new extravaganza. Covid restrictions have given the producers some headaches in so much as being able to rehearse safely etc. but as the producers of the show said, “nothing is insurmountable”.

The Group, during lockdown, kept their acting skills in good shape with zoom play readings among their members and were also joined by an acclaimed actor of TV and stage fame just for fun, which was great. The group have now settled down to some serious rehearsals; complete with new and very talented acting recruits in readiness for the performances which will run for two nights at The Venue in Holt on September the 17th and 18th 2021 starting at 7.30pm. Tickets will be available

from The Venue, (usually in the mornings prior to these dates) and they will also be available from Hair by Solo at 4A Barford Road Sheringham. Subject to availability, tickets will be sold on the door on performance nights. Tickets cost £10.00. All sales must be cash. The tickets are unnumbered and will be sold on a first come first served unreserved basis.

To reserve tickets please call Nigel at work on 01263 823433 (during the day) or email Nigel on solo.hair@virgin.net

The group will move on to their next project almost immediately, which will be a farce called “Miss Marble Takes a Break” which will be performed at The Little Theatre, Sheringham in January 2022

We invite to come along with family and friends and look forward to seeing as many of our regular supporters as possible. Stage Direct

Case Study: Making A Claim for Personal Injury after an Accident To highlight the process for making a personal injury claim, we have provided a real-life example where one of our clients was seriously injured in a road traffic accident.

The client (who we have set out below, but which is not her real name) instructed our specialist personal injury team to pursue a personal injury claim to compensate her for the injuries she suffered and to provide financial provision for her long-term care and assistance.

Sarah, who was in her late 80s, was involved in a road traffic accident where the vehicle in which she was a front seat passenger was hit from the rear by another vehicle. Her driver had braked to avoid an oncoming vehicle which travelled the wrong way around a roundabout ('the Oncoming Vehicle'). Sarah suffered a fractured spine and a stroke as result of the accident and required surgery, followed by a lengthy stay in hospital.

When Sarah returned home, she required 24-hour care, and assistance with activities such as washing, dressing, cooking, and cleaning. Whilst the NHS were able to provide limited care for the first few weeks, this was a temporary measure. Sarah's family instructed private carers to help her with personal care and her adult son moved into her home to aid with cooking, shopping, travel etc.

Medical evidence concluded Sarah's condition was unlikely to improve and that she would require 'in house' care and assistance for the foreseeable future. Sarah also needed aids and equipment to help her around her home.

Sarah and her family were concerned about the cost of her future care needs as she had insufficient savings to fund the private care fees long term. It was decided that Sarah should pursue a claim against the driver of the Oncoming Vehicle to compensate for her injuries and the financial losses she suffered due to the accident, including for the

future cost of care.

Clapham & Collinge offered to act for Sarah under a Conditional Fee Agreement, which is commonly known as a No Win No Fee Agreement, so she did not have to meet her legal costs upfront. This enabled Sarah to focus her finances on paying for her care.

Claimants are entitled to recover compensation for (1) General Damages (compensation for injury, suffering and loss of amenity) and (2) Special Damages (financial loss incurred due to the accident including travel expenses, medication costs, loss of earnings, care costs and aids and equipment.)

We submitted details of Sarah's claim to the insurers of the Oncoming Vehicle. Under the Personal Injury Pre-Action Protocol, the insurers had three months to investigate the accident and confirm in writing whether they accepted that their driver was responsible for the accident.

In Sarah's case, the insurers for the Oncoming Vehicle blamed the driver of the vehicle which collided with the rear of Sarah's car for the accident. We argued the apportionment of blame between the drivers should not delay Sarah's claim and successfully persuaded the Oncoming Vehicle's insurers to deal with the claim on a Without Prejudice basis. This meant that the Oncoming Vehicle's insurers paid Sarah compensation and were free to pursue the other insurance company for a contribution later.

Once liability was admitted, from the driver of the car that hit the car Sarah was in we arranged for Sarah to undergo examinations with two specialist medical experts: a Consultant Spinal Surgeon and a Neurosurgeon, to assess Sarah's injuries and to prepare a report to assist in calculating her financial loss.

The experts agreed that Sarah's injuries were caused by the accident and concluded she would need 24/7 care in future. We obtained quotes for the cost of 24/7 private care and included the cost of Sarah's future care as part of her claim.

The Defendant argued that, due to her age, Sarah would have likely required substantial care in the near future even if the accident had not occurred and made a reduction to her claim for care. They also argued that Sarah's stroke was unrelated to the accident. These arguments were clear attempts to negotiate a lower settlement figure.

We engaged a specialist Barrister for advice and negotiated with the insurers' Solicitors to reach a favourable lump sum settlement which provided Sarah with significant compensation for her injuries and enough money to pay for her future care needs.

The International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition returns to Sheringham Park

The International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition, the world's premier photography exhibition specialising in garden, plant, flower and botanical images, returns to the National Trust’s Sheringham Park this autumn, from Wednesday 1 September to Sunday 31 October.

Ready to make a move?

Located in the tranquil surroundings of the Bower Garden, over 40 pictures will be on display celebrating gardens and plants from across the globe. The international nature of the exhibition sits well within the garden setting at Sheringham, which features plants from at least five continents.

We understand that moving home can be both a happy and sad experience. That’s why our team are ready to work with you and look after your every need from full market exposure to discreet one-off buyer introductions. It’s currently the best time to sell in years, so however you want us to move you, we’re here to help.

The competition featured nine main categories including favourites such as ‘The Beauty of Plants’, ‘Beautiful Gardens’ and ‘Abstract Views’ and newly added category ‘Plants & Planet’ – where a portion of the entry fees were donated to WeForest to plant new trees.

The exhibition features a wide range of subjects including wildlife, urban settings, abstract views as well as woods and forests – although always with plants as a focus.

Please give us a call

We had some wonderful feedback about the 2019 exhibition held at Sheringham Park – here are some of the comments from our visitors:

to discuss how we can get you moving

‘The photos showed how many ways there are to appreciate gardens – wide-ranging views, tiny details and nearly abstract representation.’ ‘It captured nature so beautifully – brought the world to my doorstep.’ ‘It was so atmospheric and correctly placed in such a beautiful ‘Bower’.’

The International Garden Photographer of the Year is a free exhibition, which is open at the National Trust’s Sheringham Park from Wednesday 1 September to Sunday 31 October 2021, dawn to dusk. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

real-time Geo-Loyalty solution designed by Coniq, to significantly increase local businesses’ footfall and sales.

“The shortest path to recovery for our country’s town centres is innovation,” said Holt’s Nigel Hadlow. “We have partnered with Coniq, a British technology company because they will give us the digital customer engagement capabilities to truly understand and personalise communications so residents and visitors will be excited and encouraged to support local businesses.”

Supported by North Norfolk District Council with funding from the Norfolk Strategic Fund, the new My HOLT loyalty programme will encourage customers to spend time and money in Holt’s unique independent shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants, bars and hotels.

The My HOLT platform identifies and engages with customers throughout the entire shopping journey by sending highly personalised, multichannel communications before, during, and after visiting local retailers participating in the loyalty programme.

By creating geofences to anonymously identify customers’ location, which automatically triggers push notifications, residents and tourists of Holt will receive personalised incentives to

they buy in-store, customers continue to receive highly relevant communications and offers – all the while earning towards future rewards and entry into a monthly draw.

Nigel Hadlow added, “We chose Coniq because they have developed an end-to-end digital platform that will empower us with all the tools and data to drive successful engagement and loyalty for the town. This is really important. It is no longer sufficient for town centres to rely on counting footfall because the number of people entering a shop has become irrelevant unless this data is captured and interpreted to engage individuals based on their personal buying preferences. Coniq gives us a true coalition programme so customers can receive and redeem offers in specific stores while in the future running special marketing campaigns such as treasure hunts that will encourage people to visit our town throughout the day and the week.

My HOLT is excited to be playing a central role in supporting the town by supplying the modern digital tools needed to ensure the future success of physical retail and our High Street.”

The My HOLT app is available now to download on the App Store or get it on Google Play. It’s free! Nigel Hadlow

The Art of Charity

Original Painting Raised £5K for Charity

An original painting by Samuel Thomas capturing a dreamy sunset over Cromer was raffled off, with tickets SOLD OUT raising £5K for Cromer’s new cancer centre.

Review: Excellent if unusual film.

Wednesday 29th September – 7.00pm: The true story of Roald Dahl and Patricia Neal “TO OLIVIA” 2021 (12) starring Hugh Bonneville and Keeley Hawes.

The true story of Roald Dahl and Patricia Neal. It’s 1962 and Roald Dahl (Hugh Bonneville), an eccentric, burgeoning children’s author and his wife, Patricia Neal (Keeley Hawes), a glamourous Hollywood movie star, have retreated to the English countryside to bring up their expanding young family. Tragically, their lives are turned upside down by the devastating death of their daughter Olivia and as the couple struggle through the unimaginable loss, their shared grief becomes a source of redemption and strength which changes their lives forever.

The Friends of Cromer Hospital asked Samuel Thomas if he would help with fundraising for the Chemotherapy Unit and he painted the most amazing piece of art which raised £5,000 by selling tickets via an online raffle. The winner was a gentleman from Kent.

Mr Thomas who lives in Norwich but grew up in Cromer said ‘I still have a lot of family living in Cromer so it’s a place I have a strong affinity for. Cancer is something which affects one in two people in their lifetime, so it is something that is going to have an effect on all of us.

Review: Beautiful film, really worth seeing this, enjoyed it, highly recommend.

Mr Thomas said the painting had a special significance for the mental resilience needed for those suffering the challenges of cancer: ‘We decided a sunset painting of Cromer connected with many as it is a reflective time of day for us and watching a sunset helps us appreciate how much beauty surrounds us on a daily basis and reaffirms how much we have to live for despite the adversity we may face. It is a time for us to put our problems into perspective and to find some clarity so we can face tomorrow with perseverance and resilience. It is about looking forward towards the future with the belief that things will get better.’

The Norfolk Coast Dark Skies Festival

The Norfolk Coast Dark Skies Festival is returning for its third year this autumn. With an emphasis on wildlife and the dark, a range of face-to-face and online events will include wildlife walks at night, stargazing, soundwalk, talks, podcasts and activities. The 2-week long festival launches on Saturday 25th September at Thornham Village Hall and will celebrate the stunning dark skies and landscapes of the area as well as raise awareness about issues of increasing light pollution.

The acrylic on boxed canvas painting also features a quote on its side which reads ‘Don’t lose hope, when the sun goes down the stars come out. ‘

The centre, which is scheduled to open this month, will aim to deliver 600 surgical procedures a year as well as an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments a year. The new site will also have six chemotherapy chairs, three new clinic rooms, two new minor procedure rooms and a new cancer information and support centre.

We are really lucky as the Norfolk Coast is one of the darkest areas in the UK. This contributes towards the rural character and feelings of remoteness and tranquillity that we enjoy here. Our wildlife also benefits enormously from the dark night-time – whether they use it to hunt, to hide from predators, reproduce, migrate or simply to sleep like we do.

nother

Unfortunately, light pollution can have a negative effect on our wildlife, our well-being and the rural atmosphere of the coast. Through this festival we can discover the wonders of our environment after dark and learn how we can all do our bit to preserve the night skies. We’re very interested in talking to parish councils, businesses and organisations who are keen to become more dark skies friendly.

Our canine friends enjoy their own waiting area and dedicated ward if they need to stay overnight, and our feline friends also have their own waiting area and dedicated ward including everything you would expect from an Accredited Gold Standard Cat Friendly Practice. Our exotic pets also have their own ward and waiting area complete with vivaria for our reptile species and specialised enclosures for birds. As an Accredited Gold Standard Rabbit Friendly Practice our small mammals also benefit from specially designed enclosures and an abundance of different tempting treats!

With autumn and winter on the horizon, now is the time to make sure your loved pet is ready for the months ahead. Our tortoise friends may need an annual “MOT” check to help keep them safe during hibernation. It‛s also a good chance to make sure our dogs and cats are up to date with routine flea and worming treatment and spot any signs of ill health or arthritis prior to the cold weather arriving. Our VIP Club helps to spread the cost of routine veterinary care and save you money and our veterinary nurses offer free of charge appointments to help determine the most effective and appropriate preventative parasite care depending on your pets lifestyle.

Dr Faye Bethell leads our team of four highly qualified vets and is a recognised RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine, so able to treat any exotic pet that might come along. Faye also treats some very exotic species as she works closely with some of Norfolk‛s most popular zoos and zoological centres. The vets are fully supported by a great team of qualified nursing staff able to offer advice for routine pet care and wellbeing including pet weight management, claw clipping and dental advice.

Fully equipped with some of the most advanced equipment available, including digital x-ray , dental x-ray, ultrasound scanner, video endoscopy and laser therapy, we also have our own on-site CT Scanner (something very few Norfolk vets are able to offer), and in-house lab able to provide rapid results helping us treat your pets more effectively and reducing the stressful wait for results. Toll Barn Vets is an independent family run veterinary centre offering 24/7 care for all our clients avoiding the need for stressful visits to unfamiliar practices who don‛t have your pets records available in emergency situations.

It's not all emergencies – we have a luxury Cat Boarding Hotel on site so if you are going away and you cat needs looking after by a dedicated team of veterinary professionals, the Cat Boarding Hotel could be the answer. The past months have left us all concerned about Covid risks and with client and staff safety the highest priority, Toll Barn Vets limits the number of clients able to be in the reception at any one time and provide large separate individual screened cubicles solely for your use during your visit. We also continue to offer the facility for clients to remain in their car while our staff collect your pet and our vets have a discussion with you in our private car park whilst maintaining social distancing.

Want to know more – just call us on 01692 407126 and have a chat with Nola Bethell the Practice Manager, or just make an appointment to come along with your pet.

Mellow Mushrooms

I always look forward to Autumn and the comfort of curling up in the warm and enjoying a bowl of homemade soup, and what better than taking advantage of the seasonal bounty of mushrooms. This recipe can be made with ordinary mushrooms, or for extra flavour and depth try to source some different varieties or use some rehydrated porcini mushrooms added to the fresh ones. This freezes well so make double quantity and keep some for a wet and rainy day.

Homemade Mushroom Soup

Ingredients 500g/1lb mushrooms 90g/3oz butter 2 medium onions, chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 tablespoons plain flour 1 litre/2 pints Chicken or vegetable stock 1 bay leaf (optional) 120mls/4 fl oz single cream Generous grating of nutmeg Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Method Clean the mushroom with a damp cloth, (never wash mushrooms as they absorb the water diluting the taste), and roughly chop the caps and stems.

Add the mushrooms and cook over a high heat for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.

Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms, mix well. Add the bay leaf, if using, and simmer for 10 minutes.

Remove the bay leaf and leave the soup to cool for a few minutes.

Place the soup in a blender, (you may need to do this in batches) or use a stick blender and blend until smooth. Add the nutmeg, taste and season.

Return the soup to the heat and reheat until it simmers but not boils. Stir in the cream.

You could also add a few reserved mushrooms, fried until golden brown, as a garnish. Serve with a chunk of good bread.

Serves 4 – a hug in a bowl.

Enjoy – Jo, Editor.

Antique & Collectors Fair Cley Village Hall, Cley-Next-The-Sea, NR25 7RJ

Perfect Pastry

I have so many requests for the perfect pastry recipe, and it always amazes me how many people are still terrified of making their own shortcrust pastry.

Once you’ve mastered this, all sorts of delicious avenues and possibilities open up, and you’ll never look at a pack or Jusroll again.

If you want an everyday, super quick and easy to make pastry, here it is.

Throw away all that you may have been told previously about using lard and plain flour, and just follow the instructions below, and you’ll never look back.

Definitely buy the dough blender pastry cutter, it makes life so much easier and is not expensive.

I use this recipe for both savoury and sweet recipes and have included a quick treacle tart recipe for you to test it out.

Just remember, less handling and cold water and bowl gets the job done!

Super Simple Shortcrust Pastry

(Makes one large quiche or treacle tart, use the leftover cuttings to make awesome jam tarts!) 8 oz Self raising flour 4 oz butter/marg (I use Clover) cut into small pieces Approx 4 tablespoons COLD water

To make pastry: Make sure you use a cold large bowl (preferably metal or pottery) and if you have one, a dough blender pastry cutter (see pic). Place flour into the cold bowl, and add the butter to the flour, and using the cutter in quick movements cut the butter into much smaller pieces. Using light,

quick fingertip movements, rub in butter to flour until it resembles crumbs, being careful not to handle too much (just use your fingertips and don’t press). Using your knife, add in 3 tablespoons of very cold water to the mixture, and bring together into a ball, adding another tablespoon if not coming together (if its too sticky just add a little more flour). Handling lightly, press and turn the ball once or twice to fully combine it, and then cover in cling film and leave to rest in the fridge for half an hour to chill. On a floured surface, roll out and use, pricking all over with a fork once in your large flan dish prior to adding filling.

Citrus Treacle Tart:

8 oz pastry recipe (as above) 8 oz breadcrumbs 1 x 454g tin golden syrup 2 generous hpd tblsps fine shred marmalade Juice of 2 lemons

Roll out your pastry and line a 9-inch flan dish with it, pricking the base all over with a fork. Place syrup and marmalade into a saucepan and gently heat through, whisking to ensure marmalade mixes evenly. Once warmed and combined, add in lemon juice, and continue for another couple of minutes. Add your breadcrumbs to the warmed mixture and place into your flan dish, evening it out. Place into a preheated oven on 180° for approx. 25- 30 mins, or until mixture has slightly risen and filled out and pastry is golden. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream. Carolyn Burn

Is it ever too late to make a will? by Kieran Athow, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr Whilst planning ahead and making a will is the best way to arrange the division of your estate, sometimes plans need to be put in place suddenly and at the last minute from a hospital bed, hospice or care home.

Testamentary Capacity To make a will or amend an existing will, you must have the requisite “testamentary capacity”. This means that you must understand that you are making or amending a will and its effect, understand the extent of your estate and comprehend any claims to which your estate could be subject to following your death.

If there is any doubt as to your capacity, then a medical report may be required prior to the will being executed. For example, whilst a diagnosis of dementia does not necessarily mean that you lack testamentary capacity, it would be advisable to obtain a medical report to confirm the position.

Solicitors are well versed in these issues and will help to ensure that a valid will can be executed in time.

Precautions Against Undue Influence Any decision to make a will or amend an existing will must be your own. If there is

any sign of undue influence from a third party, then steps will need to be taken to protect you. For example, it may be that you have asked a family member or a friend to contact your solicitor on your behalf. If that person is also a beneficiary under the provisions of your Will (or could indirectly benefit from the same), then your Solicitor must be satisfied that they have not exerted ‘undue’ pressure on you to make or amend your will in particular terms.

Unless your Solicitor is satisfied that your instructions are yours and yours alone, they will be unable to act for you with respect to drafting a new Will or amending an existing Will.

Finding Witnesses A will made in any setting, including a care home or hospital, must be signed by you in the presence of two independent witnesses. Given the urgent nature, and the fact that your witnesses must both be present at the time you sign your will) the most practical arrangement is for all three of you to sign at the same time in each other’s company.

Your witnesses must be independent, and they cannot be named within your will as a beneficiary, nor can they be the spouse or civil partner of any of your named beneficiaries.

Finding willing witnesses to a “deathbed will” can be difficult, as many medical professionals may not be willing to witness the Wills of those in their care. However, your solicitor can usually bring a colleague with them, and they can both act as your witnesses.

Making a Deathbed Gift If there is insufficient time to make a Will, or if there are relatively small gifts that you want to leave to certain people without the formality of making a will, you may be able to leave them by way of a deathbed gift.

Deathbed gifts have complex rules and so it is always best to seek advice from a solicitor to prevent any problems arising later for your executors.

Yorke Trust Benefit Concert Series 2021-2022 This series of benefit concerts is devised to help support young musicians who have been unable to perform to live audiences because of the pandemic, and to help them advance their careers. Generous private benefactors, together with established artists who are appearing without a fee, are supporting this project.

Loosely modelled on the tradition of benefit concerts popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, the series is presented in association with The Craxton Trust, some of the young musicians having played at the trust’s recent auditions in London. All participants are encouraged to programme new repertoire. We hope this modest contribution in support of those taking part will to some extent help a return to live music making in the community.

All concerts begin at 15:00 and are in The Old Chapel, Burnham Road, South Creake, NR21 9JF.

Light refreshments available. Parking in the orchard behind the chapel. Tickets £12.00 from 01328 738482, Text 07899 771366 or by email to carol.jennings2@btinternet.com. Postal booking to The Yorke Trust, Grove Cottage, Southgate Road, South Creake, NR21 9PA with a cheque made payable to The Yorke Trust. Paper tickets will not be issued, but a record will be kept of all bookings. Bank details for BACS payments: The Yorke Trust, NatWest 52-41-29, A/c 44630417. Please use your name as a reference.

An Act of Animal Cruelty in Sheringham

On the evening of Monday 16th August 2021, our cat was deliberately poisoned. Following an agonising struggle, she had to be put to sleep. We are keen to make Sheringham pet owners aware that a person who is prepared to do this resides amongst us, although we see it as more important to raise awareness in the hope that it does not happen again.

The local constabulary has already been informed but we would be interested to hear from anyone whose pet may also have been a victim of this individual. If you do have any information, please call 07312 095125.

Do your eyes give your age away?

Erase signs of ageing, safely and effectively. Latest treatment updates from the Coltishall Clinic.

Eyes have always been a primary facial feature, referred to as “the window to the soul” but with most of us using masks now a days they have become even more important as a focal point. Unfortunately eye area is not a forgiving area to treat and requires a comprehensive assessment and treatment approach.

So what are the effects of ageing that need to be addressed? There are three main changes that occur with ageing. Loss of volume, loss of skin elasticity causing sagging skin and sun damage that affects the skin quality. In addition to these changes, wrinkles form because of repetitive movements of the frowning and smiling muscles. These changes affect the whole of your face so we may need to address changes in your forehead, brows and temples also for natural and pleasing results.

How can we help you reduce first signs of ageing around the eye area? Careful use of injections can restore volume and reduce dynamic wrinkles formed by muscle over activity. Dark circles can be improved with hyaluronic acid fillers such as restylane or your own fat.

We can use lasers to create a new skin and reduce and reverse sun

01603 736487

damage. Finally if required we can use surgery to lift the brows or remove excess eyelid skin.

How do you perform eyelid skin tightening or skin removal to address more advanced changes of skin ageing? The traditional blepharoplasty is a more invasive procedure with considerable recovery period and often involves overnight hospital stay. It also often involves removal of muscle layer and fat from around the eyeball. More invasive a procedure, longer is the list of potential complications. Also too much fat removal can lead to a hollowed out artificial or operated upon look.

Now we know that a fuller brow is more natural and more attractive.

What other options may be possible? Forehead and temple lifts using threads, fillers, lasers or surgical brow lift or mini brow lift may be other suitable options. A comprehensive treatment program will be devised after your consultation and assessment.

For more information or to book an appointment log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 01603 736487

Gerry is also the many-times winner of our chess-problem solving competition, which shows that good chess and backgammon go together.

Sheringham Community Support Needs You!

SCS was set up as a response to the pandemic by several town councillors and community volunteers in March 2020. Over 120 people joined as Street Volunteers and have supported members of our community with shopping, friendship, prescription pickups and connecting people with the community and other organisations. The group was initially under the umbrella of the Town Council.

25th - 26th September 10.00am–5.00pm (Saturday) 10.00am – 4.00pm (Sunday)

The work of SCS has been hugely appreciated by residents and we are aware, as was the case before the pandemic, that this support is still needed. SCS is, therefore, going to continue but under the administration of Community Action Norfolk (CAN) as a Good Neighbour Scheme, to provide day to day support for those who may need help on an occasional or regular basis.

Light refreshments daily 10.00am–4.00pm Raffle ◊ Climb the Tower (Sunday 11.00am-3.00pm) Village archive exhibition in Church Stalls in Churchyard Songs of Praise Sunday at 4.30pm Music in Church both days 11am-12 noon & 2pm - 3pm Free admission & free car parking Sunday 26th Car Boot 10.00am Opposite the church All Enquiries 01362 668525 or 01362 668302 All proceeds to St. Mary’s Church North Elmham (Restoration Fund).

We still have street volunteers for many streets in Sheringham but, with some returning to work, we need more volunteers. If you can help, please get in touch using the details below.

Also, if you have skills or experience that would help to co-ordinate SCS please get in touch as we need to build a strong Steering Group to make SCS sustainable into the future.

As part of our transition to an independent organisation under CAN we will be holding our first AGM on Wednesday 29th September at the Morley Club at 7pm. Please come along and support us if you are already involved or would like to find out more.

Clubbers urged to pre-plan journeys home

Clubbers in Norwich are being urged to pre-plan their journeys home due to high demand for taxi services at the end of the night.

It follows a few incidents of disorder where people have been gathered waiting for taxis.

Inspector Ian Cox is from the force’s Community Safety team, which is responsible for organising the weekends public order patrols. He said gatherings of people waiting for taxis had caused some problems in the last few weeks and urged people to plan their journeys to avoid waiting around unnecessarily.

He said: "Nightlife in the city has been busy since nightclubs were able to reopen in July following moths of lockdown restrictions.

"By and large, most people have enjoyed their nights out with no problem, but we’ve had to intervene in a number of situations resulting in arrests.

"More recently, disorder has been focused on the areas where people have been stood around after their night out, waiting for taxis and we understand some companies are running a reduced service.

"The best way to avoid this is by planning your journey home, either by pre-booking a taxi or arranging a lift with a friend or relative. This way, you avoid getting caught up in situations where, after a few drinks, could end unintentionally."

Norfolk Open Studios 2021 - North Norfolk Artists from across North Norfolk get set to welcome visitors into their studios Makers and creators from across North Norfolk are preparing to open their studio doors as part of one of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country.

Norfolk Open Studios will take place across 16 days in September and October, a change in dates for the event which will allow visitors to explore and experience Norfolk in the autumn.

The free event will see more than 320 artists taking part throughout the county and in North Norfolk 92 artists will be opening their studios to share how they work.

As well as the artists opening their studios, numerous schools will be exhibiting in the scheme. Art Trails will also be in place across the county, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios and local attractions in one day.

In North Norfolk three schools are taking part – Aldborough Primary School, Cromer Academy and North Walsham Junior, Infant and Nursery Federation.

There will be six art trails organised by artists. These will take place in Cromer and surrounding villages, Happisburgh, West Raynham, Bacton, on a route from North Walsham to Southrepps and throughout the villages of Binham, Langham, and Hindringham.

Throughout the duration of Norfolk Open Studios, artists will be holding additional events. In North Norfolk there will be an exhibition of past works by artists in the region, an online art auction and a preview exhibition.

Ros Dixon, Norfolk Open Studios Administrator, said: “It’s exciting to realise that Norfolk Open Studios is returning this year. After last year’s event was cancelled it feels particularly special, as well as it being the first time the scheme will take place in the autumn. We hope that the

opportunity for visitors to be out and about exploring Norfolk at this magical time of the year, and meeting artists and seeing amazing artwork, will continue to offer much enjoyment and inspiration to people, as Opens Studios always has.”

Visitors will find painters, sculptors, weavers, furniture makers, jewellery makers and lots more throughout the varied landscapes of Norfolk.

Artists taking part could not be more excited to be opening their studios to visitors.

Painter Nigel Skinner said: “After a long period of not being able to invite people into my studio I am excited to open my doors to the public once again. This year’s open studio is the first time in my twenty Nigel Skinner, Credit Matthew years of taking part that I am part Usher of an art trail, with three other artists all based at West Raynham Business Park. We will also be hosting a mixed exhibition in spaces adjacent to our studios which will conclude with an art auction. My studio is situated in the Old Chapel on the former RAF base. I have a keen interest in environmental issues and my work is predominantly made from salvaged and reclaimed materials. I live in Great Walsingham and the surrounding countryside is often a great source of inspiration.”

Tracey Ross, an artist based in Houghton St Giles near Walsingham, said: “My work explores the horizon and the beauty of Creation inspired by the North Norfolk coast. I love working in acrylics using mixed media to build up the layers and textures. I enjoy holding art workshops and am in the process of launching my first online art course! I look forward to welcoming you to my studio.”

Artist Sandra Rowney works from a riverside studio in Hoveton where her love of wild swimming spills into paintings, models, pots, textiles and prints. She said: “During the pandemic I found a way to combine my artwork with my passion for wild swimming. My work is all about the sea, the river and rock pools. My riverside studio is at Hoveton on the River Bure where I can swim whilst layers are drying on canvases or pots. Norfolk Open Studios then gives me a focal point in the year to work towards and a chance to share and discuss my work with visitors.”

Brochures can be picked up from Tourist Information Centres, libraries, cafés and various art venues across Norfolk.

Norfolk Open Studios will take place between 25 September and 10 October 2021. For more information visit norfolkstudios.org.uk

Norfolk Open Studios will be a part of Norfolk Wonder, a series of activities across the county this autumn presented by Norfolk & Norwich Festival. The programme is to be announced on 6th August. RNLI names lifeboat in honour of The Duke of Edinburgh The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is proud to announce a new lifeboat will be named in honour of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

The state-of-the-art Shannon class boat (ON1346) will be called Duke of Edinburgh in memory of Prince Philip, who passed away on 9 April this year, aged 99. The RNLI is delighted to honour Prince Philip’s longstanding commitment to maritime services and lifetime of support to Her Majesty The Queen.

Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have a long history with the RNLI. Her Majesty has been Patron of the lifesaving charity since 1952 and The Duke of Edinburgh became a member of the RNLI Council in 1972. Together, they visited several RNLI lifeboat stations over the years, the most recent being the opening of Cowes Lifeboat Station and the naming of its Atlantic 85 class boat in July 2012. The announcement is being made 71 years to the day that The Duke of Edinburgh assumed command of HMS Magpie in 1950 – his very first sea-going command in the Royal Navy. And in a further nod to that proud moment in his naval career, earlier this summer, His

RNLI chief executive Mark Dowie said: ‘It’s a great honour, not just for Wells Lifeboat Station but for the RNLI as a whole. ‘We had hoped to mark The Duke of Edinburgh’s long service and support for the maritime sector by naming a lifeboat in his honour in his 100th year.

‘We heard that The Duke was pleased to learn of the plans to name a lifeboat after him and that it was going to be serving a community so close to Sandringham. Very sadly The Duke passed away before His Royal Highness could see it happen, but we are delighted to paytribute to his legacy in this way today.’ Wells Lifeboat Operations Manager Chris Hardy said:

The new lifeboat is the 53rd funded by the generosity of civil servant donations to The Lifeboat Fund as part of the Civil Service charity’s 150th anniversary appeal.

Chair of The Lifeboat Fund and Director of GCHQ, Sir Jeremy Fleming said: ‘The Lifeboat Fund is delighted to be the principal donor for the new lifeboat at Wells-next-theSea.

‘It’s the second lifeboat for Wells with a royal association, the first being the Royal Silver Jubilee that was on service at the station from 1936 to 1945. This one seems especially fitting.’

Briston Organ Shows Live Music is back in Town!

Our last show (first since early last year!) was on Friday August 13th, with Matthew Bason - and the date really lived up to its name with a couple of equipment failures, and a two-hour delay for our artist due to a major road accident - but we survived it all and had a wonderful show once we got the amplification working properly! We have been pleased to get good feedback from our audience, who not only really enjoyed the show, but complimented us on the precautions we took regarding the Covid problem, and saying they felt very safe.

Appeal for SNAP Members

Interested in working with your community and local police to help identify local neighbourhood policing priorities in your area?

We are looking for new SNAP (Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel) members to join our meetings across North Norfolk.

A SNAP Meeting is a public held meeting where we traditionally meet to discuss local concerns and issues, provide updates on police action and vote in our next community policing priorities. Usually, we hold these SNAP meetings every 3 months for each Safer Neighbourhood area in an effort to ensure that our community policing priorities remain current and reflect what is important to local residents. Due to the pandemic these meetings have been held virtually over Microsoft Teams.

Our next show is on Friday September 24th, 7.30pm, at the Copeman Centre, Hall Street, Briston, when that very clever organist and extremely funny man Andrew Nix will be playing for us again.

If you like really good live music and loads of laughs, do come and join us. Tickets are just £8, and you can reserve yours now by ‘phoning Carol on 01263 860844 - we are pleased to take payments by credit or debit card.

Our hall has wide level access, comfortable seating, and excellent acoustics, and disabled visitors are most welcome too. The show is complimented by a great raffle and refreshments, so what’s not to like? The show is a fundraiser for both the hall itself, and for the wonderful ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital. Do come and join us!

preparation for running 26 miles (42 kms) by Local Referee is Doing it for the Kidz running longer distances. At present he has run Local semi-professional FA referee Dave Lewiss will be running in the London Marathon on Sunday 3 October 2021. Dave has worked in the Cromer area for over 18 years and is a Maintenance Manager at a care home in Mundesley.

The charity Dave will be raising funds for is Whizz-Kidz, a Uk based charity whose mission is for all young wheelchair users lives to be full of fun, friendship and freedom. They achieve

this by supplying vital mobility equipment across the UK and support young users through skills training and employability.

Dave said ‘It gets to a point in your life, I am now 56, when you want to face a big challenge for the first time. For me my big challenge will last a few hours on the day of the marathon. For many children with disabilities, they face a massive challenge daily and that’s why I am running to support Whizz-Kidz’

Dave regularly runs 10k along the coast road from his home in Cromer to Sheringham and back and is having to up his game in

20 miles around the North Norfolk Coast but is under no illusion that the task ahead won’t be an easy one. Should you wish to support Dave on his challenge, he has set up a donation page on

North Norfolk Vikings

North Norfolk Vikings Swimmer, twelve-year-old Isaac Buchan, won a silver medal at the "Future Outlaw 1.2mile Swim" in time of 35.05 He had to battle against choppy waters and swimmers who were a lot older than him. In total there were 43 men taking part. He came 9th overall and runner up in the under 16 category. Isaac takes up the story in his own words.

"The event was part of my mums Ironman distance triathlon and was held at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham. I was swimming with lots of adults and older children. When I was going up to the start the weather was quite cold, but they said the water was warm and they didn’t lie, the temperature was very warm, like getting into a bath. When we started you had the option to dive or sit and slide in, I dived off the side into the dark green water. I could just about see my hand as it entered the water. It was cold at the beginning but got so warm. I had to swim 1.2 miles;

Ted Jones, manager and coach said “I would like to thank everyone at Hayes + Storr Solicitors for their sponsorship. They are a well-established local firm who have served the community well over the years. That they wish to support young people in the area just goes to show that they’re serious about supporting the community now and into the future.”

the water was very choppy. The big orange buoys were difficult to see, but I looked forward every 6-8 strokes and this kept me going in a straight line. The whole time I was thinking about how I was going to feel great after the swim.

It was hard work and tiring however, I felt awesome and refreshed and I would do it again and I will. I was so happy to come second in the under 16 age group, I never knew I could swim that fast for so long. I would encourage others to do an organised, safe open water swim if they get the chance, it is a great experience and one that I will do again."
