insure your journey PROTECTING YOUR TRAVEL TRAILER ADVENTURES

Embarking on the open road with your travel trailer is an exciting experience, filled with adventure and the promise of new discoveries. However, ensuring that your journey remains carefree involves more than just planning the perfect route and destination. It involves protecting your travel trailer with insurance customized for you. Here are a few reasons why having insurance for your travel trailer is not just a wise decision, but an essential one. Peace of mind on the road Traveling comes with its share of uncertainties, and having insurance for your travel trailer provides you with the peace of mind that you deserve. Whether you’re cruising down the highway or parked at a scenic campsite, knowing that your investment is protected can make your travels even more enjoyable. Protection against the unexpected Damage to your travel trailer can happen when you least expect it. Comprehensive and collision travel trailer insurance can cover you in case of events that are out of your control, like a tree limb falling on your trailer. Optional Pest Damage ProtectionSM provides coverage for damage from pests such as rats, mice, insects, birds, or other nondomesticated animals. Coverage for personal belongings Your travel trailer is not just a mode of transportation; it’s your home on wheels. Optional personal effects coverage can help cover the cost of personal belongings inside the trailer, providing financial assistance in case of theft or damage. When auto insurance isn’t enough Auto insurance generally provides coverage for your travel trailer only when it is connected to your vehicle and may assist in cases where your trailer causes damage to another vehicle. However, it typically does not provide standalone coverage for repairing or replacing your trailer if it sustains damage or is totaled.

You can choose travel trailer insurance options that help cover those expenses and may even offer the benefit of total loss replacement coverage. When homeowners insurance isn’t enough Homeowners insurance may provide some coverage for your belongings, but often has limitations when the trailer is off your property. A customized travel trailer insurance policy can ensure that your trailer and belongings are adequately covered. Liability protection Accidents involving your travel trailer can also lead to liability issues. Insurance can provide protection against third-party claims, covering medical expenses or property damage that may arise from an incident involving your trailer. Insuring your travel trailer is not just a precaution; it’s a commitment to a worry-free travel experience. Safeguard your investment, enjoy the journey, and make every moment on the road a memory worth cherishing. Start your adventure with the confidence that comes from knowing your travel trailer is protected against life’s unexpected twists and turns.

FOLDABLE E-BIKE COMPARISON

ISSUE 23 | WINTER | 2024

WINTER IS HERE and I am not excited about it—and I am not talking about the weather. It’s mid-October and I'm just leaving a Target that has a ton of Christmas decorations up! What is the hurry for the holiday season?! When I was growing up, I don’t think we were even allowed to talk about Christmas until at least Thanksgiving Day. And I remember how crazy it was if someone had a tree up before Thanksgiving. Now, this doesn’t affect me as much as the next person, because I don't really celebrate “retail holidays” that cause so much stress and financial strain. I enjoy spending time with my family, but not because the calendar says I need to. I would much rather spend time with my kids between Thanksgiving and Christmas than on the actual holidays. Last year I had all four kids on the ranch in Oklahoma and they had a blast. As a dad, when your kids choose a visit to the ranch instead of cash, you feel like you raised them right. But I digress. I think I have a way to combat this early holiday behavior—let's start summer in March! We are all dying to get back on the road every summer, so why not just start it early? Sure, it won’t be summer weather, but it was 85 degrees when I saw those Christmas decorations, so clearly that doesn’t matter. The whole point of this ramble is that you shouldn't let a holiday or a specific season be the reason you do or don't go outdoors and spend time with family and friends. Find the pockets around all the holiday chaos and just enjoy each other. None of my childhood memories have to do with the gifts I got. They are all about the moments with family and friends. And if I'm really honest, most of those were just everyday outdoor events, not some national holiday. Memories are made outdoors!

DESTINATION TRAILERS Redefining RV Life

T

HE LINE BETWEEN PARK MODELS, destination trailers, tiny homes, and traditional RVs is starting to blur. As manufacturers listen more to consumers’ desires and needs, they are developing innovative floor plans with eye-catching designs and features. Destination trailers carried more of a “park model” connotation in the past, but all of that is changing as we roll into 2025. The destination trailers on our list are slightly more portable than those made in years past, but still designed to stay in one place for the season. Inside, they’re spacious, lofty, and let plenty of sunlight in—certainly not what you typically think of when you think “RV.” Take a look.

Some models shown are prototypes and features and specifications are subject to change in production models. Always be sure to check the compatibility of the towing capacity of your vehicle and your towable RV of choice. RVs are listed in no particular order. Not all features are listed. Please visit the manufacturer’s website for up-to-date information

FOLDABLE E-BIKE COMPARISON

E

-BIKES ARE bicycles powered by battery-operated motors, offering two main ways to get around: pedal assist, which helps your pedaling effort, and throttle, which propels the bike without pedaling, similar to a moped. Understanding these differences and knowing your primary uses for an e-bike can help you choose the best one for your needs. For instance, do you want to tour a scenic area, go off-road, or get from place to place

around the campground? There are several factors to consider when choosing an e-bike. One is that the range manufacturers advertise may not reflect real-world conditions, as things like rider weight and terrain can impact how fast and far you’re able to go. Heavier models might offer better stability, but they’ll also drain the battery faster and reduce speed. Also, for off-road riders, a sturdier, heavier mountain bike might be more suitable. Storage

is another key factor—particularly for RVers—and foldable models or removable batteries can be beneficial for long rides. Other features to consider include built-in safety options, like lights and horns; convenience accessories, like cargo racks; and practical details, like ease of assembly, battery location, seat comfort, and control panel readability. If you’re just starting your search, here are a few foldable e-bikes to consider.

The products listed here are in no particular order. Always read the owner’s manual and safety guidelines before purchasing or using an e-bike. Not all features are listed. Please visit the manufacturer’s website for complete details, features, and information.

FMCA ANNOUNCES

REBRANDING PLAN AND NEW NAME To better reflect its mission of welcoming and supporting owners of all types of RVs, Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) soon will begin doing business as Family RV Association. This decision came from the FMCA Governing Board during its 2024 annual meeting. The association will develop a new logo to accompany the revised name. The new name retains the word “family,” which goes beyond the conventional sense of the word and extends to the entire community of RV owners. Many members develop close bonds with each other, turning strangers into lifelong friends and travel companions—another type of family. The new name also incorporates “RV” in order to clarify the organization’s focus as an RV travel and lifestyle community.

PRE-WASH YOUR PRODUCE

Pr

If you’ll be camping off the grid, pre-wash all your fruits and veggies before your trip. This will help you conserve water while boondocking.

REUSE SINK WATER Don’t fill your kitchen sink all the way for dishwashing. Fill it halfway or less, and when you’re done washing, don’t pull the drain plug. Leave the dirty water in the sink to pre-soak or pre-rinse the next day’s dishes. Then you won’t need nearly as much fresh, hot water to properly wash your dishes next time.

LINE SHELVES TO KEEP THINGS QUIETLY IN PLACE Line cupboard shelves and drawers, and even spaces in between dishes, with rubber grip liner to reduce clanging and movement when traveling. The thicker, premium-quality grip liner works better than the cheaper, thin liner, which bunches up easily.

RENT BEFORE BUYING AN RV Buying an RV that doesn’t work for you can be a very expensive mistake. Instead, consider renting an RV first to get a feel for the size, drivability, floor plan, and layout, and see whether or not you even like the lifestyle. It’s a great way to learn about © RV Fun Rentals what you like and what you don’t. The money you spend on renting can save you a lot more in the long run, compared to buying the wrong RV, then taking a big financial hit when you sell it.

AKE TAHOE is one of the most beautiful destinations on the West Coast, and Zephyr Cove Resort is a great home base from which to explore the area, with a lineup of activities that cater to both thrill-seekers and beach bums. There is something for everyone, including kayaking, beach volleyball, renting boats and jet skis, and simply relaxing on the soft sand beach. If you’re looking for a place to picnic and explore outside of the resort, don’t miss out on the nearby Nevada state parks. Be sure to plan for a few hours of strolling across the wooden boardwalks that hug the coastline. There is a fee for parking. While you’re in the area, don’t miss a major highlight—the two-hour M.S. Dixie II cruise. It’s about a quarter-mile from the campground, and captures the essence of Lake Tahoe’s beauty. You’ll navigate the serene waters of Lake Tahoe, with the route

guiding you gracefully into the picturesque Emerald Bay, a location with postcard-perfect landscapes. You’ll cruise around Fannette Island, the enigmatic sole island in the vast expanse of Lake Tahoe. To add a historical layer to the journey, the cruise offers a glimpse of Vikingsholm Castle, a Scandinavian-inspired structure erected in the 1920s. Whether you prefer to relax on the upper deck, absorbing the breathtaking views, or enjoy a drink and a hot meal tucked inside the warm main deck, the cruise’s round trip exploration of Lake Tahoe’s charm will leave a lasting memory.

Dining at Zephyr Cove Resort If you’re looking for an easy dinner spot, the resort has you covered with two on-site restaurants. Zephyr Cove Restaurant in the Lodge and the seasonal Sunset Bar & Grille by the marina both have top-notch food. If you’re

up for exploring beyond the resort grounds, Edgewood Restaurant and Sage Leaf are two excellent options just a short drive away.

Staying at Zephyr Cove Zephyr Cove Resort has accommodations for everyone: • TENT CAMPING: 57 sites under the redwood trees • RENTED AIRSTREAMS: Retro charm with modern amenities, these silver bullets are a unique way to experience the outdoors • LODGE ROOMS: Base yourself in the heart of the action with convenient access to the Lodge’s amenities • PRIVATE CABINS: Rustic comfort for those who prefer a cabin-in-the-woods feel, with the added bonus of pet-friendly options • RV SITES: 93 sites with enough space for those who want to mix in some tent camping

Why do you RV? RVing is the perfect combination of adventure, comfort, and connection with nature. We love the freedom of exploring multiple places without being confined to just one spot, allowing us to experience new destinations while still enjoying the comforts of home. The RV community is incredibly welcoming, and we've made so many meaningful connections with fellow campers who share the same passion. Some of our favorite memories come from those shared moments. RVing is especially dear to us because we remodeled our vintage camper when ric and first started dating. Now, 10 years later, we’re married and continue creating unforgettable memories, sharing the joy of our camper with others.

RVing gives us the time and fle ibility to move with the seasons, temperature, and view. Called To Wander / RVingBaja Christopher & Lindsay Harvey What kind of RVer are you? Full-timer Favorite RV Destination Baja California, Mexico What do you travel in? Formerly a Class C motorhome and currently transitioning into a truck/ trailer combo Why do you RV? We began RVing in early 2018 to fulfill a dream of driving from Florida to Alaska, and then from Alaska to Argentina. Our purpose was to visit as many states as we could in that process and to serve others as we traveled to be an example of how full-time RVers could make an impact in the lives of others in the communities we visit. Although the first year was challenging, we made it to Alaska and swam in the Arctic Ocean before turning south! 48 | RVTODAY.COM

Long story short, we ended up on a beach in Baja California in the spring of 2020 when the world shut down and we were forced to change our plans. We switched to a Class C motorhome that we completely remodeled and then made giant loops on the West Coast, where we wintered in Baja California and found seasonal work during the summer in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Because of our vlog and website documenting our first journey through Baja California, upon our return in 2021, we met dozens of campers who recognized us from our videos and website who told us that we were the reason they decided to travel to Baja California. We decided to embrace the influence we had to encourage travelers to visit Baja California, but to do so responsibly and respectfully, connecting with local

calledtowander.com rvingbaja.com

communities as often as possible. We published a paperback guidebook on RVing and camping in Baja California that has become a primary resource for many travelers. We launched a website, started a Facebook group, and hosted an annual RV meetup to celebrate non-profit organizations throughout the peninsula. We also started operating our RV caravan services to guide campers in small-group settings and now operate the largest caravan business in Baja California. What started as a dream to drive from Alaska to Argentina has turned into a full-time lifestyle, where we can pair our expertise on Baja California with our ability to create a positive impact for others through the RV community. We see no other life than life on the road, and we are motivated to help others pursue this lifestyle!

THE PERSONAL GROWTH LESSONS I LEARNED

RV TODAY | 57

SAN DIEGO TO VANCOUVER

T

HE JOURNEY OF PERSONAL GROWTH is not linear; it is a wild roller coaster that you can never get off of. So why not sit back and enjoy it? I remember the cold evening in January 2024 when I came to my dad and said, “I want to drive to Canada by myself.” When he asked why, I replied, “Because I want to put myself through uncomfortable situations to become a stronger woman, and doing that big of a road trip is bound to teach me something.” He replied, “Go for it, if it will make you happy.” When I asked my dad for his opinion that night, it had been roughly 10 months since I first started this Airstream life. In those 10 months, the farthest I’d traveled was Redding, California, and the longest trip I had taken was three weeks. While that trip

58 | RVTODAY.COM

helped build my confidence, I did not experience any challenging or testing situations, and I didn’t experience the deep level of personal growth I desire. Why care about personal growth? I grew up fairly blind to the world. I was innocent and naive, and lacked confidence and self-awareness. During college, I became obsessed with trying to improve myself in any way I could. I wanted to be mentally resilient, maintain a positive mindset, overcome my fears, and find a deep sense of inner strength to live the empowered life I currently am today. At the end of January, I was on a two-week fishing trip to lakes around California when I met an older Australian woman at a campsite. We started talking about our journeys,

I want to put myself through uncomfortable situations to become a stronger woman, and doing that big of a road trip is bound to teach me something.

goals, hopes, and dreams. After talking for a while, I told her how I hoped to drive to Canada one day, and she gave me a detailed plan of what I should do. Two weeks later, I was fully booked for the three-week ascent to Port Angeles, Washington, where I would take a ferry ride over to Canada—landing in Victoria, British Columbia—then to Vancouver, where I would start my three-week descent back to San Diego. When the time came, I said my goodbyes to my family, and made my first stop in the Bay Area to visit a dear friend of mine. The night before I left to continue my drive, my mind flooded with doubt. As I cried to my friend, he said, “This is the whole reason why you are doing this—to prove that you don’t need anyone—so why would you let this stop you from reaching your dreams?” He was entirely right. Being brought back down to reality is important.

RV TODAY | 59

SAN DIEGO TO VANCOUVER

The next morning, I continued my trek into Redding, California; Oregon; and finally Port Angeles, Washington; where I would drive my truck and trailer onto a ferry and cross international borders to land in Victoria. I could dive into greater detail about my six-week trip, but what I really want to emphasize are the biggest lessons I learned throughout those six weeks, which were full of beauty, but also self-doubt. Everyone’s personal growth journey is different, but no one’s journey is linear. Here are the biggest lessons I learned as I drove from San Diego to Canada: • Inner strength is key in difficult situations where you may not have support • You must overcome fears in order to grow • Self-compassion helps when you make mistakes and need to pick yourself back up • Self-worth can keep you from putting yourself into uncomfortable situations • Confidence-building situations are stressful in the beginning, but important in the end • Mindful practices will teach you to be easy on yourself in stressful situations

60 | RVTODAY.COM

• Positive affirmations are essential to fully internalize self-reward • Set simple but achievable goals to feel a sense of accomplishment There were times during this trip when I wanted to be home, but I knew it was worth powering through the self-doubt and the desire to give up. Besides, at a certain point it became impossible to give up—to get home, I had to follow my plan. So I reframed my perspective and knew that every day that passed brought me closer to home. What's next for personal growth? The trip from San Diego to Canada was about personal growth and discovery, not just seeing beautiful landscapes—well, maybe a little bit of both. Would I do it again? Maybe in a few years or with a partner, but why experience the same goal I already satisfied?

Personal growth is about facing new fears and creating new goals to constantly strive and evolve into a better version of yourself. I love being by myself, because there are no distractions and I am the only person who can create or take away my own happiness. I hope that sharing part of my story can inspire you to start writing yours. Everyone is dealt different cards in life, but all anyone can do is make the best of where they sit, and if we don’t like it, we can work on it day by day. I will admit that it feels amazing to have the confidence as a young woman to back up my trailer in any campsite and to say I drove from San Diego to Canada by myself. But at the same time, I am ready for something new. I am ready to expand my knowledge and continue to open new doors to different opportunities. I’m sure some will be bad and others will be life-changing, but the very least I can do is try. I hope you do too.

Of course, this is generally safer and helps your tires last longer, but it can also help increase your gas mileage by 3 percent per tire. That means if all four of your tires on your tow vehicle or motorhome are well below where they should be, you can be losing up to 12 percent on your fuel mileage.

Gas stations near major highways often charge more because land is generally more valuable in those locations, increasing their overhead costs. Heading into town a little bit—even a mile—can make a huge difference. Truck stops can be more expensive too, even with fuel discount programs. Of course, driving a large rig or motorhome, you may need to use those truck lanes, but you’re BONUS TIP:

Use an app like GasBuddy to find the lowest prices

There is really no reason to let your vehicle warm up for many, many minutes at a time. You can warm it up while driving. The drive out of your neighborhood or out of the campground is warming up your vehicle to get it to operating temperature just as much as sitting at idle does. In fact, sitting at idle doesn’t bring you up to operating temperature at all. It’s actually bad for your engine because all the parts haven’t heated up to expand at the right amount. We’re not saying to start it up and hit the freeway at 70 mph right away. Instead, start it up and slowly drive out at 10 to 15 mph. That’s how to warm up your vehicle while saving fuel.

Cruise control is great on the flats, and will actually make little micro-adjustments to help you save fuel in that case, but if there are hills, ditch the cruise. Cruise control does not know when you’re reaching the top of a hill, so it’s speeding along trying to get you up the hill, it doesn’t let go until you’ve gone over the hump, and then it has to slow you down. You’re losing fuel mileage between all those changes. It’s also shifting your transmission more. If possible, only accelerate before you reach the hill, and not while you’re on it. Or at the very least, let up on the gas before you get to the crest of the hill and then coast your way down.

or press the button to call and ask them to start the pump for you. With the Open Roads membership, you’ll receive a card that will allow the pump to start for you, and it debits directly from your checking account. There are also discounts associated—up to 50 cents per gallon. It’s a no-brainer when you’re traveling heavy with a large diesel.

Braking and stopping is one of the worst things you can do for fuel mileage. Of course, you have to use your brakes when you’re supposed to use your brakes. But traffic lights are usually timed so that if you are following the speed limit, you aren’t going to get stopped as often. If you’re going much faster or much slower than the speed limit, you’re going to hit more of them. So ideally, take your one light and then just travel at the speed limit, because stopping really ruins your gas mileage.

BONUS TIP:

Don’t buy gas when there’s a delivery truck at the station. Recent deliveries stir up sediment, which can come up through the pump and clog your fuel filter. While it may not help you directly save money on fuel, it will save you money on repairs.

AGAME-CHANGER FOR FULL-HOOKUP CAMPERS? INTRODUCING THE RV RESIDENTIAL FLUSH & THE RV SNAP TRAP

By Joshua Sheehan

W

HAT IF YOU COULD SKIP dealing with your RV’s black tank entirely while on full hookups? Imagine bypassing the need to empty and manage that tank without giving up its functionality for boondocking or travel days. While I was walking through America’s Largest RV Show in Hershey, Pennsylvania I came across a new product at MORryde's outdoor display that promises exactly that: the RV Residential Flush, created by EZ RV Solutions. Paired with their RV Snap Trap, this system allows RVers to decide whether to send waste into the black tank or straight out to the 90 | RVTODAY.COM

sewer hose with just the flip of a bypass valve. This product, as explained by Al Mattiucci from EZ RV Solutions, is the first and only RV black tank bypass system of its kind on the market. The concept is simple yet revolutionary: a diverter valve is installed in the plumbing system, giving you the choice of directing toilet waste to the black tank or the sewer outlet. I asked Al to break down the details for me and provide clear answers on what this setup offers for everyday RVers. Control of the bypass is flexible— you can manually rotate it, use a 12V electric version controlled by a switch, or wire it to an RV’s

touchpad control panel depending on the RV. Al, a full-time RVer and father of four, said this product was inspired by his desire to eliminate constant black tank maintenance while parked at full-hookup sites. “If you’re hooked to the sewer,” Al said, “why would you ever choose to manage raw sewage?” His family only uses the black tank while traveling. It’s not unheard of to plumb an RV toilet directly to the sewer, but the RV Residential Flush lets you keep the black tank option available for times when you’re not on full hookups. EZ RV Solutions has been prototyping this system for more than two years, testing it

with both residential-style toilets and traditional RV models. Al mentioned that for best results, the toilet bowl should be at least half full before flushing to ensure there’s enough liquid to move waste effectively through the system. The RV Residential Flush is one of two new products EZ RV Solutions is rolling out. Its companion, the RV Snap Trap, creates a secure P trap in the flexible sewer hose. Many RVers improvise ways to create a fluid barrier in their hoses, but the Snap Trap takes this to the next level by providing a sturdy connection and maintaining a code-level P trap to block sewer gases and pests from getting into the RV plumbing. Given its simplicity, the RV Snap Trap seems likely to gain traction quickly as a handy, plug-and-play upgrade. The RV Residential Flush valve may have a slower rollout

due to its complexity, but it has significant potential. I dug into how well the RV Residential Flush integrates with existing RV systems—for example, some RVers expressed concerns about how effective the bypass would be with limited water use in RV toilets. Would the single flush volume be enough to keep solids moving smoothly through the pipe to the sewer, especially

with the challenges of campsite layouts? Al clarified that using the bypass doesn’t compromise any existing functions—it simply adds an option when needed. The slope of the sewer hose after the P trap is still important for smooth operation, and the system is designed to handle various campsite setups. And what if you lose power? The RV Residential Flush’s electric motor is 12V-powered, switching the bypass on or off with ease. But if power is ever lost, a manual override lets you adjust it by hand, and the switch plate clearly indicates the direction of flow, so there’s no confusion about where waste is headed. These products are coming to market soon, and I think EZ RV Solutions is onto something that could change the way many RVers handle their waste systems. For now, I’d say the RV Snap Trap will likely be the “gateway product” due to its ease of use, while the Residential Flush is a more specialized tool for RVers on full hookups and may be something best incorporated from manufacturers during the original build. If you’re interested in more innovative RV tips, gear reviews, or how-to videos, check out RV Gear & Far and watch this interview with EZ RV Solutions on YouTube: rvtoday.com/tankbypass. You can also check out EZ RV Solutions at ezrvsolutions.com to dive more into these two products.

LESS IS GREATER THAN MORE. Recently, I was asked what the RV industry needs to have a strong 2025. And because the timing of this question was right after I spent time in Elkhart, Indiana, it hit me like a ton of bricks. We need fewer floor plans, but more choices. When I talk to potential buyers, especially first-time buyers, they all say they are overwhelmed with too many

98 | RVTODAY.COM

choices. And if you think about how long it takes to decide which movie to stream, you know what that feeling is like. I still think choices are a good thing, but instead of choosing from an overwhelming number of floor plans, choices should involve ways RVers need or want to customize their floor plan. Take my fifth wheel as an example. There were only two of us traveling in it, and it had seating for nine and sleeping for six, but no real place for an office. When you buy a rig and immediately have to rip out a brand new couch to put in a desk, it hurts a little! I used to wonder why only toy haulers have patios, and going into 2025, we're seeing more sundecks off the sides of RVs, so clearly the industry is catching on. Fewer people want a traditional dinette and more people want something a little more flexible, and we're seeing that catch on too. Moving into 2025, I also wonder why certain floorplans don’t have more built-in flex space or options. Maybe instead of that third couch, it can be a desk or a bunk area. I've always thought that the bedroom, which is only used for sleep, could be a little flex space as well. We see this in vans. More towables need this option too. When the industry gets to a place with less rigid floor plans, and RVers have the option to mix and match certain features, we will see better price points and happier consumers because they'll be more able to buy a rig that fits their unique needs. Because most RVers and campers want to be outdoors, not indoors with a nice view, let's start looking at RV camping as not about bringing a house with us, but instead about bringing the best experiential camping equipment possible—RVs that help each of us RV exactly the way we want to.
