Head of Primary | RWA Innovents and GIVE Coordinator On Wednesday September 20, RWA celebrated “World Peace Day”. Throughout the day, students were engaged in a variety of activities to promote the idea of peace and harmony. One such activity was participating in a group wide Innoventures photo contest. Each school was asked to submit a creative photo promoting the idea of peace. Students and staff were asked to come dressed in white and gather on the sports field to form the symbol of peace. We chose two doves meeting, as it symbolises the unity and harmony that exists between our primary and secondary schools. Thanks to one of our students, Nayef Al Bastaki we were given the opportunity to shoot an aerial photo. As an international school, we feel it is a wonderful opportunity to inspire our students to spread their wings across the globe, bringing peace and harmony to all. We also created our ‘Peace Day’ message which was submitted along with our photo. ‘‘Human compassion is what will bring peace in this world’.

Radisson Box Appeal This month we will also be participating in the Radisson Box Appeal. This is a great initiative to benefit the local community that Innoventures has taken part in for the past 4 years. The purpose of this noble activity is to collect essential items that will then be distributed to the labourers around our construction sites in the UAE. The list comprises around 12 items. Boxes are now available for collection form your child’s form/ homeroom teacher and should be returned to the form/homeroom teacher latest by October 12. A list of items will be attached to each empty box for you to use. Thank you in advance for supporting this great event. The Year Ahead The table below has information about RWA whole school events and also Innoventures Education “Innovents” that RWA students will be involvedPrimary in. We have a lot of opportunities for our students to work together and also compete against each other by participating in the various activities. If your child wishes to participate in any of the Innovents below, then they should speak to their class teacher.

Dear RWA Parents, 2017-2018 Innoventures Nepal Ambassadors As you may already know, Innoventures Education launched the Gift of Innoventures Education (GIVE) initiative in 2014 to Primary support charitable projects that have enduring benefits to the underprivileged. In line with our students’ choice to support education related projects, GIVE has partnered with Dubai Cares to build schools in Nepal. Thanks to the generosity of parents, students and staff from our group schools, supplemented in equal measure by our Board, we have already raised enough funds to sponsor four schools in the region. Our hope is that, over time, we will be able to make a significant difference to our adopted community in Nepal, and also give our students a chance to see the long term benefits of their philanthropic work. Dubai Cares, along with BuildOn are responsible for construction of the schools in Nepal and also for hosting visiting students from our schools. We are pleased to let you know that RWA will be taking part in the second trip to the region to help build not one but two of our sponsored schools this year, while living with host families in the community. Only six students from each Innoventures Education school will be selected for this trip to make up a team of twenty - four students and four staff members. The trip will take place from the 9th – 15th February 2018. The total cost of the trip will be AED 9000. We are looking for students who have a care and concern for the philanthropic efforts of our group as well as the right qualities and motivation to make a trip like this successful. RWA staff member for you to be in touch with for any questions: Hello Everyone, Raffles World Academy: Ms. Stephanie Carte – StephanieC@rwadubai.com As the PYP Coordinator and Deputy Head of Academics - Early Years I spend most of my time in classrooms planning with teachers, speaking to students and finding out what creative learning experiences students are having and Raffles World Academy Head of Primary, Innovents/GIVE Coordinator: Dr. Armeena Tabassum – armeenat@rwadubai.com wanting. Healthy Technology Habits – Promoting Balanced Technology Use by Children Written by Damien Marshall At Raffles World Academy we understand the importance of a healthy approach to the use of technology. As a school, we are very conscious of managing screen time while the students are at school, and this article has been written to help you in how to manage screen time at home. "Screen time" is a term that is used to describe activities done in front of a screen, such as watching TV, working on a computer, or playing video games. On average, children spend about 3 hours a day watching TV. Added together, all types of screen time can total 5 to 7 hours a day. Some of the negative consequence of too much screen time can: Make it hard for your child to sleep at night Raise your child's risk of attention problems, anxiety, and depression Raise your child's risk of gaining too much weight (obesity) Primary
Recommended Screen Time Levels The following table has been developed to act as a guide in managing your child’s screen time at home. * The times below are guidelines that are based on a range of research. Age
Recommended Range
0–2
No screen time*
2 -7
Up to 1 hour*
8 – 18
Up to 2 hours*
Recommendations for Managing Screen Time at Home Cutting down screen time at home can be hard because technology (e.g. TV, computers, etc.) may be such a large part of daily routines. But you can help your children by telling them how sedentary activities affect their overall health. It is important that as parents you talk to them about things they can do to be healthier. Below are a few strategies you may choose to implement in your house to help manage screen time more effectively. Manage levels of television use: there are many strategies that can be implemented to minimize their television use, including:
Limit TV on school days and try to avoid TV before school. Don’t have the TV on during meals or homework. Decide which programs to watch ahead of time and turn the TV off when they are finished. Keep a record of how much time is spent in front of a screen. Try to spend the same amount of time being active. Be a good role model as a parent. Decrease your own screen time to 2 hours a day.
Implement a technology curfew: implement rules such as technology must be turned off during meals and by a certain time each night (e.g. 8pm). Also, don’t allow phones to be kept in your child’s bedroom. Make bedrooms off-limits for technology - Require that computers and smartphones be used in public spaces and charged in a central area – like the kitchen. Offer alternatives: Challenge your family to go one week without watching TV or doing other screen-time activities. Find things to do with your time that get you moving and burning energy.
Remember the Rule The rule that we use to ensure we are promoting eye health at RWA is the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes Look 20 feet away For 20 seconds
Message from the Deputy Head, Pastoral and Administration, Primary School To further promote independence and responsibility in the students, we are introducing line prefects for each class from grade 1-5 this year. These students will be given the opportunity to show their leadership skills to their peers and will receive recognition by wearing a badge, and signing an agreement, that will further emphasize the importance of the role they will play in the transitions between classes. Line prefects will be changed every few weeks, allowing for a number of students to be given the opportunity to experience this role. The signed agreements will be proudly displayed in their respective classrooms. Primary We look forward to seeing the young leaders of our school in this role!
Mrs. Maccallum Deputy Head, Pastoral and Administration, Primary School
Meet Maths Mastery – By Bridget Haines, Math Coordinator RWA PS At Raffles World Academy our primary maths programme is undergoing a change to better serve our students. We have moved away from the Abacus system, which spiraled learning through topics, and towards Mathematics Mastery, where students are provided the opportunity for deep understanding.
3NR representing numbers in multiple ways
Lessons are structured to allow students opportunities to develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills. This mirrors the inquiry approach of the PYP and complements the higher order thinking of our science program. The structure of the program also opens up opportunities for mathematics to be explored through the unit of inquiry, applying math in genuine contexts using project based inquiry. Primary
As the new Math Co-ordinator for the Primary school I am really excited to see the depth of understanding already happening in our classrooms and cannot wait to see where our students take their projects.
News from Grade 1 Team Grade 1 have been very busy inquiring into the food pyramid and the different food groups. They are enjoying finding out that we need more than fruit and vegetables and exactly what we gain from each of the food groups.
They are also learning about the stations in guided reading and how to rotate amongst the activities. We love dictionary hunts to help us learn key vocabulary for our unit!
However, our favourite activity so far was definitely Peace Day. We just loved getting creative to spread the message of peace!
News from KG2 STUDENTS EMBRACE AN EXCITING NEW START TO THE YEAR KG2 students have had an extremely exciting and fun start to the year! We have embarked on our new learning journey together, engaging in activities whilst tuning in to our new Unit of Inquiry. We have been inquiring into how living things grow, change and relate to each other. KG2 classes are also in the process of conducting a scientific investigation on ‘How Living Things Change’, through the planting of seeds and then predicting, observing and making conclusions about how they will grow. The passion for learning that all our KG2 students have shown us this far, is indeed proof that these children are our new generation of RWA up and coming young scientists!

News from Grade 3 Team Students have been really excited to immerse themselves into their learning since the summer break. Their enthusiasm is admirable. This week the Grade 3’s have been learning all about rounding. We created some number lines and figured out how to round a number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000 by taking a leap to the nearest one.
RWA Human Peace Dove
On the 20th September Grade 3 also participated in creating the RWA human peace dove. Grade 3 wore white in a show of solidarity for peace and created some beautiful art pieces to show their support.
RWA Peace Doves This year, Innoventures hosted a ‘Peace Day’ photo competition amongst the four sister schools, and the RWA Stallions were crowned the undisputed winners! Congratulations to every pupil and staff member who participated. Whist it was a warm day with a few pupils complaining about the heat, their complaints quickly died away when they saw the final photo of the RWA Peace Doves, asking with interest where they were standing and being rather impressed at how it actually looked like two doves. It is our hope that one day our pupils will show their children with pride what we achieved together. Raffles World Academy celebrates Peace day in style. Primary
Before the sun rose work had already begun on today’s exciting Peace event. The RWA Stallions dressed in white gathered on the field to form the symbol of peace. We chose two doves meeting, as it symbolizes the unity and harmony that exists between our primary and secondary school. Thanks to one of our students, we were given the opportunity to shoot and aerial photo. As an international school, we feel it is a wonderful opportunity to inspire our students to spread their wings across the globe, bringing peace and harmony to all. Before the sun sets we would like to share our peace day message with you.

Sport Trials– Primary School Our first semester sport trials were extremely successful with lots of students testing their skills to see if they could make the teams. We have now finalized most of our squads and training is already in motion ready for the season, well done to those students who were selected. Keep a close eye on our progress and live feeds from the “RWA Stallions Sport” Facebook page. We have all the training times placed on the bulletin board by the main sports hall changing rooms, in addition any updates or notifications will be placed on the ‘Sports Teams’ board outside the primary PE office. This year we are extremely keen to get the RWA sporting community vibrant and visible so we encourage friends and family to come along to our games to support our athletes. To know when our fixtures take place or to simply keep an eye on our sporting success please visit our RWA webpage and follow the ‘Sports @Primary RWA’ link. Go Stallions!

News from Grade 4 Team Dear Parents, We have a wonderful busy two weeks in Grade 4. We took part in the Peace Day picture and art competition which was great fun. We carried out investigations on the stomach and small intestine in Science, havng great fun making a mess and learning too, and are now experts at knowing how the digestion system works. We had a fitness and nutrition expert come into our assembly as a guest speaker, which was great as he answered all our inquiry questions on how to live a balanced lifestyle.
We are all looking forward to going on our school field trip to ‘Bounce’ in the coming weeks to further our knowledge on the body systems
We hope you enjoy our learning journey as much as we do

A message from our Valedictorian…. “There’s always light at the end of the tunnel”–I heard this phrase over and over during my high school years, and particularly during the two years of IB (when the going really got tough!). Yet, it was so difficult to see beyond the numerous IB acronyms–EE, IA, CAS, TOK–and their anxiety-evoking deadlines when I was submersed in all the to-dos, not to mention the stress of college applications. In short, my life revolved around the IB, and doing my best in all aspects of the program was my ultimate goal….so, the one thing I could not see at the time was “light”. In retrospect, however, having transitioned into college, I realized that the “light” was there all along and that high school was by no means a dark “tunnel”. Throughout those two years, the IB program was actually teaching me crucial critical thinking and analytical skills, without which I couldn’t have possibly survived these first few weeks of college. Although I’m only at the beginning of my first semester, in many of my courses I have already been required to apply the same skills that I had used for writing the Extended Essay or conducting the Internal Primary Assessments. I have come to really appreciate the effectiveness of the IB curriculum as well as the expertise of the RWA faculty when I see my other peers, who have done curricula other than the DP, having difficulty with tasks that I, and any IB alumnus, consider straightforward and familiar (in fact, some students here even have trouble with citation of sources!). It is truly a great feeling to see what you had learned can be applied elsewhere; it makes high school make a lot more sense! To the juniors and seniors: Focus on active learning, and not on passively ‘getting through’ the IB, because the first approach could make your high school experience an enriching and rewarding one; one that you would cherish for life. Janan Mostajabi Class of 2017 Raffles World Academy, Dubai 43/45 points Janan has just begun her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Theatre at UCLA, Berkeley
A message from our young graduates I send you this message from a new, fancy university email. The IB actually helped me so much in my university courses. IB colleagues and I sit together and talk about topics that no one else understands just yet. Good news! I am STILL learning economics. We have a course that is called Innovation in Health Sciences and Digital Design and another course called Healthcare Management Systems. In the first lecture in that course, we were talking about efficiency, equity, equality, achievement and many other economic concepts which seemed more like economics rather than medicine. We took it to a totally another level by talking about the PPC and the condition of scarcity and how we are unable to provide health to everyone and still achieve equity. I enjoy being in this university as they are teaching medicine from a new perspective and connecting it to the future. Our voices as students are heard and acted upon which I think every school and every university should do. We are being spoiled as we are only 40 students in the full cohort. Our lectures really focus upon the question of “How do we learn?” and “what is the best way of learning”.
…Sarah Al Kabbani Class of 2017 42/45 points Sarah is presently studying medicine at the Mohammed bin Rashid University in Dubai Healthcare City.
A message from our young graduates I surely was not expecting such results. When I read the 42, I couldn’t believe it! As one could expect, I am proud of my results and of the work put into my studies, however, as much as I am proud, I want to remark that I am also grateful. There is not a bit of pride in me that is not accompanied with thankfulness; this going towards all the circumstances and opportunities presented to me. Since the beginning of my IB course, I have had the opportunity to be surrounded by great conditions and great people. I thank my teachers for providing me with guidance towards both my studies and personal ambitions. Without their input, I probably would have not aimed for such targets. …Flavio Cannizzo , Class of 2017 42/45 points Flavio is now studying economics at the University of Bristol in the UK. Primary
My journey in the IBDP combined my most memorable life experiences, so far, into just two thrilling yet exhausting years, and made them years that I will never forget. My teachers were right when they told our first year cohort that this was going to be a marathon, rather than a race. From my experience, it was never a smooth sail through the DP, to say the least, and I'm sure all my classmates would vouch for that, with all the never ending assignments and deadlines. Despite this, each class and every assignment was unique and pushed my creativity and effort to its limits, and it would be an understatement to say that I enjoyed each task, from the lengthy Extended Essay, to shorter yet time consuming Internal Assessments. Going into the DP, I was quite excited but also very nervous, I really wanted to understand why I kept repeatedly hearing about the IBDP being extremely difficult and rigorous, and was curious to decipher the many acronyms that had basically become part of my vocabulary. The key advice I received from teachers and alumni was to pick subjects that I truly enjoy, and that was exactly what I did, and boy did I enjoy them! My ongoing passion for learning, along with the persistently relatable specificity of Economics, and fascinating scientific nature of Biology and Chemistry, persuaded me to continue striving for knowledge in these subjects, with the help of my teachers' love for both their subject and students. All in all, the DP has undoubtedly prepared me for what is to come in the near future, and has allowed me to firmly decide, after many years of thinking, to pursue Medicine as my college degree at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
…Zuhdi Al Khatib, Class of 2017 41/45 points Zuhdi is now studying medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland. He was awarded a full scholarship worth over AED 1 million by the UAE Ministry of Education.
I truly am overjoyed and did not expect to perform so well. It is without a doubt that I was able to do this because of all the support and motivation received from all my teachers throughout the Diploma Programme.
…Zaeem Moti, Class of 2017 41/45 points
CAS International Trip 2017 - Nepal In June 2017, our Grade 11 students departed on the journey of a lifetime to Nepal as part of their CAS program. Despite an illness that ran through the team for a few days, our students enjoyed a fantastic trip over the two weeks. The highlight of the trip was the volunteer work we completed at our project in Nabin Gram high school. We managed to build a wall to reinforce the foundations of some of the classrooms, painted most of the school as well as the front of the school, and erected a railing along some steps that was very much needed for safety reasons. There were some great relationships built with the local people and our guys shared some of their own cultures with the Nepali children. After this the students embarked on a 4 day trek in the Helambu region as well as some sight-seeing in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. The culmination of the trip was some rest and relaxation in Kathmandu with some white water rafting for fun. This year we will set off for Laos on a similar expedition in March of 2018. Among the activities planned are a trip to Pak Ou Caves, service in the Hill Tribe Village in Mekong, a hike to Kuangsri Waterfall and of course some kayaking! We already Primary have some students signed up and if anyone is interested they can come and see me in the IBDP office for more information. It promises to be a fantastic trip with many of the learning outcomes for CAS being achieved in the process. Cathal O’Mahony CAS Coordinator
Going to Nepal with school didn’t look that amazing in my eyes at first. But oh boy, was I wrong! To be able to go to Nepal was one of my best experiences of all time, it made me feel a little more important, connected to nature and feel more connected to the community of the world. The people are always there to help you while you came there to help them. Children and parents of the school we worked in welcomed us like family; the feeling was like coming home. The Nepal trip was the trip on which I needed to forget who I was and focus on what mattered more. Nils Uyttenbroeck 12D
The trip to Nepal was full of new experiences and challenges; it was a two-week trip with new people and a lot of fun. The trip consisted of two main parts, the project and the expedition. On the project we worked to build the school, to make it more child friendly and painted the school’s walls with what the children wanted to learn. It was a nice feeling when the children of the school saw the new paintings on the walls and we watched their eyes light up in awe. The expedition part of the trip was very challenging; it was a four-day expedition over the Helumbu region of Langtang. For me the highlight of my trip was becoming vegetarian for the two weeks to experience the Nepali life and their culture. The day that I was appointed group leader in Nepal was the day of the white water rafting; it was a fun way to end the trip as it was our last day before travelling back to Dubai. I particularly enjoyed navigating through the city of Kathmandu by map, as it’s a change from the normal GPS navigators that we can easily use nowadays. Nayef Albastaki 12A
After arriving from the airport when we landed in Nepal everyone was exhausted, but the next day I was group leader. It was a confusing job to do as we were all new to the city of Kathmandu and we were all just settling in. I took the group sightseeing after we finished some things we needed to have for the project and expedition such as meetings and so on. The most challenging thing for me was navigating as I am not good with reading maps so I delegated the task to my friend Nayef Albastaki, as he was highly skilled in this area, and for the rest of the trip he was the group navigator. What I enjoyed the most was interacting with new people and getting to know them. Sultan Alkhalaileh 12B
