biodegradable materials

- Does it exist? -

1. Definition biodegradable materials = man-made materials made of raw materials that grow again (oil, starch) or also materials that are biodegradable they are modelled on the natural cycle they use resources without producing waste and wihout emitting gas causing global warming (greenhouse effect) they can replace today`s plastics in many ways

2. Qualities

Some are usable for a long time Some are biodegrdadable They fallaport into natural non toxit materials Micro - organisms (fungus, bacteria, enzyme) decompose them into water, carbon dioxide and organic substances

nature recycles everything mostly CO2 - neutral If used in thermal way, they supply green energy

3. production raw materials: starch: everywhere available, almost free powder or chips made od corn, grain or potatoes Cellulose: in big quantity available in plants, mainly for the production of paper and cardboard; usage of plastics: transparent cellophane for packages

4. usage chips for packaging made of starch variety of packages transparencies and cellophane bags bottles net bags or bags for fruit and vegetables

For containers compacts, and tubes for cosmetics and make-up Bowls for chocolates, fruit, vegetable, egss and meat Cups for dairy products products for catering: cups, plates, cutlery, straws, bowls, wrapping cellophane for Hamburgers

productes for gardening: containers for plants, foils, layers Cotton swab and happies for babies clothes Toys for children

5. Advantages and disadvantages advantages less energy waste saving of fossil resources decreasing dependence on petrol renewable resources Jobs in the agricultural sector

disadvantages higher price compares to traditional plastics lack of marketing

How to make cellophane from potatoe flour

The production of cellophane out of starch-flour 1.)Implements & chemicals 1.1.)Chemicals: -12 ml of glycerin -6,8 g insoluble starch-flour -3,6 g flour out of potatoes -200 ml of water -1 packet of gelatine in powder -maybe some food colours

Implements: -Erlenmeyerkolben= retort, which can be filled at least with 250 ml water -waterbath - heater -stick out of glass - layer of acrylic glass

*NO GLASS, because the layer would stick to the class -thermometer - scale

The process: -You have to: dissolve the packet of pulverized gelatine in 100 ml water (WATCH OUT:the gelatine must be free of lumps!!!) -…mix the 6,8 g disconnected starch-flour, 3,6 g flour out of potatoes, 12 ml glycerin, gelatine and to fill all into the ``Erlenmeyerkolben`` (retort) -…plug in the heater -…fill the 100 ml water into the waterbath -…put the agents in the ``Erlenmeyerkolben`` (retort) into the waterbath -…inflame the liquid starch-flour under permanent stirring until 100°C as long as, that it becomes a limpid substance -If you want, you can fill the foodcolours into the liquid starch-flour -…take the ``Erlenmeyerkolben``out of the waterbath and pour out the content on the acrylic glass BUT BE CAREFUL!!! The thickness of the liquid starch-flour must be persistent & there shouldn´t be bubbles -The layer must dry for ca. 24 hours without being moved - In the end you must take off the layer carefully

Production of eatable disposable tableware

The recipe • What you needs: - two beakers (250 ml) - spatula - waffle iron - scale - brush - sodium - guar gum - potato starch - distilled water

The implementation •

We took: - 45g potato starch, 36g sodium and 0,15g guar gum and fill it into a beaker - We fill 50 ml water into a second beaker and stir the mass the whole for some time -we put the dough into a waffle iron and distribute it with a brush - after about ca. 4 minutes the waffle is ready to be ,,eaten‘‘

Our own experience The waffle tasted a little bit bad and salty. The second time we used less sodium but more potatoe starch so that it would not be not too salty. It tasted poisonous but we didn‘t die.
