The University of Virginia Health System (UVHS) adopted Talyst’s automation technology in 2009. With AutoPharm® Enterprise, UVHS has a perpetual inventory and a detailed tracking system that prevents drug shortages and increases inventory turns. The result is a decrease in inventory from an on-hand supply of 11 days down to 5 days and a reduced carrying cost of approximately $500,000. Visit Talyst.com for more information.

The One-Container Pharmaceutical Waste Solution Simple, no worries, the highest level of technology, and best of all – full compliance. Clinicians simply put both the non-hazardous and the RCRA hazardous pharmaceutical waste in the same black container.* Clean Harbors, the largest hazardous waste incineration company in North America, will pickup, transport, dispose of, and keep you in full compliance. We own every step of the process and don’t broker your waste to someone else, like your red container medical waste provider has to. Ensuring compliance to waste segregation protocols can be difficult, both to train staff and to enforce. This can put your hospital at risk for regulatory action.
For more information: Call 800.645.8265 Email healthcareservices@cleanharbors.com www.cleanharbors.com * There are a few waste items that must be collected separately due to DOT regulations. Please contact Clean Harbors for more info.

Find us at the Intersection of Patient Safety and Pharmacy Efficiency Hospital pharmacies juggle many critical tasks. The top priority is patient safety. Operational efficiency is important too; institutions seek to provide bar-coded medications while minimizing packaging tasks to enable BCMA. American Health Packaging can support you at this “key intersection” of patient safety and operational efficiency. The AHP unit dose line is the fastest growing in the industry. And we offer many exclusive items to eliminate pharmacy packaging on lower-volume items.

Company Background Swisslog Healthcare Solutions began in 1915 as The Grover Company, a provider of pneumatic tube systems for local Detroit businesses. Over the years the company has transformed into a leading provider of integrated logistics solutions for healthcare facilities around the world. Its comprehensive product portfolio ranges from pharmacy automation, to medication management, to materials transport systems. Swisslog’s solutions optimize hospital production, logistics and distribution processes - increasing flexibility, responsiveness and quality of patient care while minimizing costs. Decades of experience in the development and implementation of integrated logistics solutions have driven more than 2,000 hospitals throughout North America to choose Swisslog products. The North American Division of Swisslog Healthcare Solutions is based in Denver, CO.
Product Overview PillPick™ is the ultimate automated pharmacy system. It provides a comprehensive approach from unit dose packaging through medication dispensing. PillPick automatically packages, barcodes, stores and dispenses unit dose medications onto Swisslog’s patented PickRing™. Offering built-in redundancy, PillPick can package and dispense simultaneously, reducing filling time for pharmacy orders. This unique solution to medication packaging and dispensing allows hospital pharmacies to benefit from a faster turnaround time, increased productivity and greater patient safety at a lower cost of operation.
into a database. A radio frequency (RFID) tag on each canister contains product and inventory information. Once prepared, the canister is loaded into PillPick as necessary for unit dose stock replenishment. Up to 50,000 unit doses can be stored within the warehouse portion of the machine. Patient orders are received from the pharmacy information system via PillPick Manager Software. When requested, unit doses are automatically assembled onto a PickRing. The PickRing is a thin plastic ring that organizes 12 or 24-hours of patient-specific medications along with a label containing information chosen by nursing, e.g. drug and/or patient information, thus ensuring the Five Rights are met. PickRings can also be used for cabinet replenishment. Doses that are not administered to a patient are sent back to the pharmacy where they are removed from the PickRing. The unit dose barcodes are automatically scanned and restocked into PillPick while verifying that the medication has not expired or been recalled. Once returned, the patient’s account is credited.

Company Background
Three decades ago, a physician encountered a patient who required an anti-nausea medication that was no longer commercially available. The physician challenged a Houston area pharmacist to compound the medication. The prescription was a success, and the pharmacist saw that others in his field faced similar demands to help patients who required compounded medications. This network of pharmacists, united by a commitment to meet patient needs, was the foundation of PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America). Today, PCCA has become the independent compounding pharmacist’s complete resource for fine chemicals, equipment, devices, flavors, ACPEaccredited training and education, pharmacy software, marketing, business and pharmacy consulting assistance. Our membership includes more than 3,900 independent community pharmacists in the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries around the world.
Product Overview
While our members have access to over 4,560 active and non-active chemicals – more than any other compounding pharmacy supplier – the competitive advantage we bring our members is the industry’s most comprehensive quality control and assurance program we bring to those chemicals every day. Find out more at www.pccarx.com/quality. Here is the Quality Difference that PCCA Brings to Member Pharmacies Every Day: Every Lot - Not Just the Initial Lot - Is Tested
• We do not solely rely upon the USP or manufacturer’s label to ensure the quality of the chemicals received. • Every lot received is tested using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible analysis, melting point, specific gravity, solubility and chemical identifications. • Additional testing of APIs is done using actual formulations.
14 Checks and Analyses Are Performed on Each Chemical Lot
• Nine qualitative and quantitative analyses are performed on every incoming chemical lot before it is released for repacking or sale. • Each lot is tested against the certificate of analysis (C of A), including: USP, EP, NF, FCC, ACS and PCCA standards. • After initial testing, all results are reviewed for accuracy by a second QC analyst. • Chemicals are tested only by degreed Chemical Analysts. PCCA Rejects About 180 Chemical Lots Per Year
• PCCA is fully registered by the FDA, DEA and State of Texas as a manufacturer and follows current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). • Only FDA-registered and GMP-certified manufacturers are used for the purchase of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). • Exclusive, proven bases and formulas. Proven Bases for More Patient Options
With access to more than 50 proprietary bases – unavailable to other compounders - your PCCA pharmacy will have more options to treat your patients, from VersaBase® topicals, specifically designed for BHRT delivery, to Lipoderm®, the industry’s only transdermal proven to deliver four drugs simultaneously. Comprehensive Education Is the Key to Compounding
Continuing education is the key to quality compounding solutions. Your PCCA pharmacy has access to more Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited continuing education than anyone else. In 2013, PCCA will conduct more than 115 ACPEaccredited sessions across the United States, Canada and Australia, as well as scores of other training sessions from clinical and technicianrelated topics to sales and marketing. Complete Support
Member pharmacies have access to the industry’s best support with more than 30 pharmacists and pharmaceutical chemists on-hand to answer the toughest compounding and clinical questions. PCCA has more pharmacy consultants on staff than any other competitor, answering more than 500 calls a day from members with an average response time of less than 30 minutes.

Our technology provides the greatest ease and flexibility in adopting, adapting and configuring rules to meet your workflow needs. Once fully trained with VigiLanz robust tools, clinicians have at their fingertips the power to create meaningful rules to enhance patient care in minutes, without needing to burden hospital IT staff. And best of all, when it comes to better understanding critical patterns, performance and productivity, clinicians and administrators will always be within twoto-three clicks of the data needed for greater clinical and operational intelligence. Our Dynamic PharmacoVigilance® solution stands apart as best-ofbreed care management technology and can be implemented as the cornerstone in your vision to create a seamless, real-time automated monitoring system of quality, practice guidance and cost support - key to all healthcare providers intent on thriving in new reimbursement models such as P4P and Shared Savings. Our solution serves as the ‘proprioceptive’ feedback loop of a healthcare delivery system. VigiLanz’ real-time software-as-a-service (SaaS) technology platform is exception-
based, delivering workflow-friendly alerts and reports that enable busy clinicians to intervene in a timely manner to optimize clinical care and minimize preventable adverse events.
Features & Options
• Drug/Lab relationships can be followed in depth, with precision using extensive filter and association features. • Productivity is optimized using three tiered noise reduction features. • Improvement initiatives are expedited using smart rules to identify improvement opportunities in SCIP, Core Measures, Blood Product Utilization and more before the opportunity is lost. • Easily and quickly configure existing rules or build a completely new custom rule in just a few minutes without IT support or approval. • Rule sets can quickly be customized using filters such as physician, unit and patient age, gender and weight. • Incorporate VigiLanz’ dynamic interval capability that automatically adjusts the Good Medical Practice Interval of an ADE rule to reflect the criticality of a lab and potential dangers of a deteriorating lab trend. If the medical practice interval expires without the clinically appropriate action taken by the clinician, then an alert notification will be made. • Emulate and automate pharmacists' analysis of dose appropriateness using the same tools and calculations including age, weight (IBW, AjBW, TBW, mg/kg calculation), sex, creatinine clearance calculations (multiple formulas), etc. • VigiLanz also gives you the option to specify rules that alert on an exception basis only, so only a wrong dose triggers an activation that requires a pharmacist response.
Testimonials “ We didn’t want to reinvent our clinical program around a software tool, instead, VigiLanz customized their software around our processes. The entire rules database in our solution is customized for our own practice, so we have a rule list that matches what we need to do and what’s important for our patients.”

As Director of Professional Services at Norwalk Hospital, Bob Bepko has made an important impact on the development of University of Connecticut pharmacy students on rotation. Bob explains how the experience “opens the eyes of the students who don’t always have institutional experience.” While the opportunity he provides is demanding in nature, it comes with the boon of new understanding about the practice of pharmacy. With all his Husky pride, it is not surprising that Mr. Bepko has recently been invited to serve on the UConn School of Pharmacy Advisory Board. In addition to his commitment to the School’s advisory board, Mr. Bepko engages in many community outreach endeavors. Recently, he participated in a well-attended Career Open House in Bridgeport, CT in order to guide high school seniors towards future career paths. While pharmacy education is not for everyone, he hopes that it will be helpful in opening up students to new possibilities. As a final piece of advice to students who hope to one day become pharmacists, Mr. Bepko describes how “it is critical for any health care professional to maintain their credibility. If you don’t know the answer, then get back to them and give them the right answer.” Although the environment in which he works under causes some duress, he says that most students “rise to the occasion.” Such achievement and personal development on the part of the students reflects a preceptor and a practice that offer indispensable opportunities.
If you are interested in becoming a UConn preceptor, contact the Office of Experiential Education at (860) 486-2999. Be a Husky!

A chance meeting with a classmate changed pharmacist Paul Lyman’s path from retirement to a second career, spanning 20 years, as a valued employee of the Bedford Veterans Administration Hospital and, fortunately for the students of MCPHS, a sought after ambulatory care preceptor. After a 27 year career as the owner of two successful independent pharmacies, Paul was ready to “kick back” and enjoy his retirement. Instead, Paul’s wife jokingly remarked that the kitchen was not big enough for the two of them, thus ending his dreams of retirement. While picking up a prescription, Paul reconnected with a classmate, the chief pharmacist at the Bedford VA Hospital, who was actively recruiting, and the rest is history. Paul has truly enjoyed being a preceptor and has humbly remarked, “I have learned more from the students than they have learned from me.” The students, however, have a different view. In 2008, Paul was voted the MCPHS Institutional Preceptor of the Year. Additionally, as one student stated “I loved this rotation. I didn’t want to leave. Paul Lyman is amazing. Where else do you have an opportunity to present at grand rounds!” The entire MCPHS community appreciates all you have done over the years for our students, Paul. You will be missed as a preceptor but we know you will remain a dear friend. We wish you the best as you finally begin your retirement at the end of the year. Maybe now, you will have enough spare time to enlarge your kitchen!

SUPERIOR PRECEPTORS
Dr. George MacKinnon
The Roosevelt University College of Pharmacy recently polled our P2 students, Class of 2014, and asked them which of their preceptors has had the greatest impact on their pharmacy practice education. We also asked them to identify the exceptional traits of the preceptor they named to support the choice they made. While their answers didn’t point to any one preceptor, the survey did tell us what characteristics make a great experiential educator in a student’s eyes.
Above all, they appreciated a preceptor who took the time to teach them about all aspects of the pharmacy’s environment and seemed to enjoy sharing his or her knowledge with the next generation of pharmacy professionals. The students also liked preceptors who asked challenging questions and made them accountable for finding the correct answers. Another positive trait that many of our students mentioned was the ability to listen to a student’s viewpoint and take the time to explain why it’s right or wrong. At Roosevelt, we feel privileged to call so many exemplary preceptors our partners. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your dedication to our students and the College of Pharmacy. Company Background Located in Columbus, Ohio, American Health Packaging is a subsidiary of AmerisourceBergen. Our manufacturing facility is registered with the FDA and fully adheres to current cGMP. Industry veterans with over 100 years of collective experience lead the quality and manufacturing departments. American Health Packaging is licensed by the Drug Enforcement Administration to package Schedule II to V controlled substances. Product Overview Patient safety is a critical issue for health systems. As a result, many health systems seek bar-coded product to dispense to patients. Bar-coded products used in conjunction with bar code medication administration (BCMA) systems, automate the “five rights.” American Health Packaging supports this health systems’ priority with its growing line of prepackaged unit-dose products.
Pharmacy efficiency. Pharmacies are concerned with the timely processing of orders to supply the proper medications to patients as quickly as possible. Adding a multitude of steps to package and check commercially available products in-house not only slows down this process, it also takes those clinicians away from their core competency - patient care. Liability management.
Packaging products within health system pharmacies can be met with various distractions in terms of quality systems and process controls. Errors that arise can place the liability on the hospital, as well as the caregivers themselves. Mitigation of risk is key. Purchasing medications from a highly regulated, cGMP compliant company such as AHP shifts some of the burden of responsibility from the health system.
Cost savings.
In addition to shifting the potential costs of errors, health systems that choose to package onsite must consider other direct costs such as establishing the packaging infrastructure as well as paying the highly trained professional staff to perform, manage and support non-core work.
Market Leadership in Providing Unit Dose
Bar-coded to the dose level, our unit dose line continues to grow! The line now contains over 370 SKUs. And, nearly a third are industry exclusives - only available from American Health Packaging in a unit dose bar-coded package format. Our products support all the major therapeutic classes. Features & Benefits
There are many benefits to American Health Packaging prepackaged unit-dose products: Safety. Companies that specialize in pharmaceutical packaging are

Company Background
Innovation is the leading provider of pharmacy intelligence and pharmacy automation to the retail, hospital, government, and mail order pharmacy markets. In business since 1972, Innovation’s PharmASSIST® family of scalable pharmacy automation and process control solutions address the prescription growth, patient safety, and cost control challenges of all size pharmacies. We apply business intelligence empowered by process simulation to help pharmacies “right-size” a solution that meets their goals, minimizes their risks, and allows for future growth. Using advanced data visualization, we build and analyze multiple scenarios with various technologies, workflows, and configurations, without having to test them on a live production system. Thus, our intelligence shows pharmacies the results they can expect, the variance they can handle, and a proven growth path on which they can build.
Product Overview
With RxSafe you take complete control of your outpatient pharmacy’s inventory management, prescription fulfillment, patient safety, and medication diversion initiatives. RxSafe’s combination of unparalleled inventory control and dispensing accuracy enables your outpatient pharmacy to reduce on-hand inventory, increase operational efficiency, decrease labor costs, and eliminate theft and diversion. RxSafe is Scalable and Space Saving. The RxSafe 1800 stores 1800 native prescription containers in just over 12 square feet. Depending on your formulary and budget, you can seamlessly scale up by adding individual towers. For example, to automate up to 5400 medications, you can implement a 3-tower RxSafe system in less than 40 square feet of floor space. Concurrently, RxSafe’s high-density storage capability eliminates the need for your medication-based pharmacy shelving and returns this invaluable working space to your pharmacy. RxSafe Offers Total Inventory Control and Increased Throughput.
There’s no greater challenge for outpatient pharmacies than maintaining accurate inventory. Even with technological advances in pharmacy management and robotic dispensing systems, most pharmacies still manually verify inventory in open inventory storage systems. With RxSafe, you automate and accelerate all aspects of inventory
management, and eliminate redundant, time consuming manual tasks such as the daily put-away process. RxSafe securely stores and accurately tracks in real-time all pharmacy inventory, including narcotics, down to the pill or unit-of-use package. The system uses a combination of barcode scanning, automatic inventory verification by weight (with a built-in discrepancy alarm), and precise optical counting to achieve 100% accuracy and in-depth inventory transparency. Thus, your staff will always have full knowledge of on-hand inventory at prescription entry, avoid dispensing expired product, and can verify inventory received against inventory ordered. When comparing RxSafe to the industry’s current robotic dispensing systems, RxSafe offers numerous advantages. First, RxSafe streamlines your workflow by continuously bringing prescription containers to your staff based on demand. Your staff does not have to retrieve any medications from shelves, which would occur with standard robotics due to the limit on their number of dispensing cells (e.g., 200-250). Second, the system increases your pharmacy’s throughput by filling up to 500 Rxs/hour in multi-operator mode, far outdistancing any current robotics system. Lastly, RxSafe eliminates tedious ongoing maintenance activity such as dispenser, vial, and label replenishment, along with daily and weekly system cleaning.
Features & Options
• Automates up to 95% of your daily fills. • Seamlessly scales from 1800 to 5400 native prescription containers. • Increases inventory turns with less on-hand inventory. • Automates and speeds up the daily put-away process with a 3-second put-away cycle. • Maintains accurate perpetual inventory for all medications down to the dose level. • Provides complete knowledge of on-hand inventory at prescription data entry. • Reduces will call inventory and simplifies the return-to-stock process. • Eliminates medication shelving and recaptures valuable working space to your pharmacy.

Product Overview Did You Know?
Studies have shown that following current regulations and aseptic compounding techniques that contamination rates can be as high as 5% while preparing your compound within an approved primary engineering control - that is 1 contaminated vial out of every 20! Here are some examples:
• If sterility tests were conducted per USP <71> methods on compounded products based on published data the expected result would be 10-2 (one contaminated compound out of every 100 compounds) to 10-3 (one out of every 1,000) in USP <797> compliant clean rooms with open primary engineering controls. •T he FDA accepts a 10-4 sterility assurance level (one out of every 10,000) while preparing in a pharma facility. Here’s the great news! The MIC EDU has a validated 10-5 sterility assurance level. This means that you can expect no more than 1 contaminated compound out of every 100,000 compounds prepared
for your patients. The MIC EDU with automated decontamination capabilities provides a consistent means of reducing risk of contaminated products with a repeatable method of reaching all exterior surfaces of compounding materials and the interior surfaces of the MIC. The vapor phase hydrogen peroxide is an effective decontaminate with a broad range of capabilities that leaves no residue. The MIC EDU Dual is our most popular unit and it allows for continuous compounding with no downtime for decontamination. The decontamination technology developed in conjunction with Steris Corporation is a continued effort to increase patient safety through Advanced Aseptic Compounding™.

Company Background Medi-Dose/EPS was founded in 1971 when Milton Braverman, a former pharmaceutical company Territory Manager, saw the need for inexpensive, manual unit dose packaging allowing a hospital to convert from traditional dispensing. He developed the Medi-Dose System to package, handle and dispense predetermined amounts of medication so they would be accessible for one regular dose. Because of the continued success of the Medi-Dose System, Medi-Dose/EPS expanded its product line to include the TampAlerT System offering tamper-evident liquid packaging, without the need for heat tunnels and accessory sealing equipment, and a full line of supplies and disposable products designed specifically for the pharmacy and health care professional.
Program Overview Often, the most important interaction you will have with the other members of your patient care team will be through your labels. It is imperative that you clearly and concisely communicate the information they need to provide the best possible care and to avoid costly mistakes.

Company Background
Texwipe is the worldwide leader in contamination control supplies and critical cleaning products including lint free cleanroom wipers, sterile products, Sterile IPA, cleanroom swabs, cleanroom paper and notebooks, adhesive mats and more. It all started in 1964 when Edward Paley invented a product to solve a problem that no one could see. The problem was microcontamination - minute particles that were creating errors on the disk and tape drives of the burgeoning mainframe computer industry. In inventing the first low-lint cloth for cleaning computer equipment, Mr. Paley created a company and invented an industry. In July 2001, The Texwipe Company, LLC was acquired by Illinois Tool Works, Inc. (ITW). Today, Texwipe is a worldwide leader in contamination control products and process materials for aerospace, automotive, biotechnology, food processing, data storage, medical device, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, telecommunications and other industries requiring critical manufacturing environments. ITW Texwipe's broad product line for contamination control includes a complete array of wipers, swabs, mops, cleaning solutions and stationery for use in cleanroom environments. Products include Vectra® ultraclean sealed-border wipers, CleanPak® pre-wetted wipers, CleanTips® swabs engineered for cleanliness and consistency, Transplex® ESD-safe swabs, and TexWrite® cleanroom stationery. ITW Texwipe also develops custom products to address specific customer requirements. Headquartered in Kernersville, North Carolina, the company supports global customers with sales offices throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Manufacturing centers located in North Carolina, the Philippines and China provide the highest levels of quality and manufacturing technology. Texwipe is committed to technology, innovation, and service excellence to provide the most consistent and highest quality products, including the recent launch of the revolutionary Vertex® Cleanroom Wipers and TexQ™ Disinfectant, a broad spectrum disinfectant with 25% more Kill Claims than any other cleanroom quat.
Product Overview
Introducing TexQ™ Disinfectant, the industry’s deadliest disinfectant with 25% more Kill Claims than any cleanroom quat. A Texwipe exclusive, TexQ™ Disinfectant is a one-step, EPA-registered Quaternary Disinfectant offering the highest kill claims, more than any other competitor solution. TexQ is a one-step disinfectant cleaner that is effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, virus and fungi. TexQ offers kill claims against some of the hardest to contain viruses and bacteria including MRSA, Pseudomonas, H5N1 and HIV-1 in addition to an exhaustive list of other microorganisms. This disinfectant will also inhibit the growth of mold and mildew and their odors when used as directed. TexQ is ideal for manufacturing and/or compounding products in any cleanroom environment. It is particularly ideal for pharmaceutical, biologics and medical device manufacturing areas where adherence to strict disinfecting guidelines (cGMP) is essential. Company Background
Natural Standard was founded by clinicians and researchers to provide high quality, evidence-based information about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to healthcare facilities and academic centers. Natural Standard includes contributors from hundreds of eminent clinical and research institutions. Natural Standard uses the most up-to-date, comprehensive systematic review methodology available. Natural Standard is the trusted resource of thousands of hospitals, government agencies, universities, manufacturers and retailers worldwide.
Product Overview
More than 1/3 of patients use CAM, yet many patients do not disclose their use of supplements or complementary modalities (e.g., chiropractic, acupuncture) because they doubt their healthcare providers’ professional knowledge of the subject. The Natural Standard Professional Database helps promote a patient centered care model by providing high quality information on these therapies including statistical analysis of available clinical trials. Natural Standard offers patient handouts and comparative efficacy charts to aid clinicians, open lines of communication, and encourage patients to actively participate in their healthcare. Natural Standard helps providers obtain complete patient medication history profiles, which lead to better adherence to treatment regimens, patient awareness of health risks, and positive health outcomes. Healthcare organizations gain unique market advantage having this resource as evidenced by the growing number of integrative medicine centers within hospitals and retail pharmacies.

Natural Standard Continuing Education Courses
Natural Standard is recommended by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) for evidence-based CME designation. The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) has identified dietary supplements and alternative medicine as one of the most sought after educational topics due to the lack of formal training on natural products in core curricula and high utilization rates. Natural Standard provides evidencebased courses meeting the credit requirement needs of all medical professionals. Programs can be taken in real time during daily workflow. Students and other users may take courses for training purposes without generating credit certificates.
