Company Background For nearly 150 years Berlinger, with HQ in Switzerland and operations in the USA, has been listening to customers to invent new products for evolving needs. Berlinger is a leader in electronic temperature monitoring for the healthcare industry. For more than 30 years we have worked with major drug manufacturers and regulators to successfully monitor and protect temperature sensitive drugs shipping around the world. Our mission is to produce highly accurate and reliable products that enable our customers to make informed decisions when handling temperature sensitive products. Product Overview The Fridge-tag® 2 is designed to help the pharmacy properly record refrigerator temperatures and produce monthly reports. After listening to pharmacists and regulators, Berlinger reprogrammed and redesigned its original product to bridge a gap between regulatory requirements and device capabilities. The Fridge-tag® 2 produces a 60 day report that can be printed, emailed and stored. It comes with an NIST traceable certificate of accuracy. Simply detach it from the external probe, connect it to any computer via USB, and download the report like a removable memory stick. Software is not needed. Fridge-tag® 2 reports are 21 CFR Part 11 compliant to meet FDA and CDC requirements.
Testimonials “ I have searched the web and nothing else more closely matches our need for information than the Fridge-tag® 2”

Pharmacists are immunizing more patients. Increasingly, pharmacies are also holding high value biological products for patients who “brown bag” their drugs to the doctor’s office. Recording refrigerator temperatures is critical to meet regulatory requirements, to insure drug efficacy and to reduce potential drug loss due to power outages or human error. Spring 2013

Company Background The Mediflow pillow was developed in 1994 by Maurice Bard, Chief Executive Officer, Mediflow Inc., after he suffered a whiplash injury. In an effort to alleviate his pain, his experimentation with pillows led to the prototype for the Mediflow pillow, the only cervical pillow with peer-reviewed published clinical proof of effectiveness. The Mediflow Waterbase pillow has earned a superior reputation in the health care community for its innovation and clinically proven results. In 2006, after many years of successful growth in the medical market, Mediflow decided to offer the Waterbase pillow to the American online retail market for the first time. Since its introduction, over 4 million pillows have been sold.

The Mediflow Waterbase water pillow is the only therapeutic pillow clinically shown in a published, peer-reviewed Johns Hopkins University study, to improve quality of sleep and reduce neck pain. ®
Once the waterbase is adjusted to the optimum level, the Mediflow system is ready to support the neck and spine by actually adjusting as the user sleeps. The user sleeps on the cloudlike polyester with the noncompressible Waterbase® indiscernibly shifting to maintain the support needed for cervical region and cradle the head. Even as the user moves during sleep the waterbase responds to head movement greatly reducing the number of times the user wakes to adjust the pillow.
®
Most people choose their pillows according to what feels comfortable. However, in order to maintain sleep and specifically a deeper, more rejuvenating sleep, a pillow must also provide support for the neck as you change positions during the night. For conventional pillows, these two requirements are in conflict. A soft pillow will not provide the support needed for the neck and shoulders and a firm pillow is typically unpleasant, making sleep difficult to attain. The Mediflow pillow offers a customizable solution. The top layer of the Mediflow pillow is a plump layer of hypoallergenic polyester that feels soft and cloudlike when you lay your head on it. This deluxe Dacron® Hollofil® polyester fiber has a special siliconized finish to keep it lofty and resistant to lumping up. The truly unique feature that sets the Mediflow pillow apart from other pillows is its waterbase. The water level in the base can be adjusted by the user to provide a customized level of support. By simply adding or removing water, the user can adjust the support level to soft, medium, or firm.
Testimonials
“ I honestly did not think your pillow would be that much different from my much loved down pillow but I was so wrong! I have been able to sleep all through the night without waking up and the pain I used to feel in my right upper arm every night has gone. I think it was there because my neck was not supported right. The Mediflow pillow supports my head and neck so comfortably. Thanks for the pillow!!!

As Director of Professional Services at Norwalk Hospital, Bob Bepko has made an important impact on the development of University of Connecticut pharmacy students on rotation. Bob explains how the experience “opens the eyes of the students who don’t always have institutional experience.” While the opportunity he provides is demanding in nature, it comes with the boon of new understanding about the practice of pharmacy. With all his Husky pride, it is not surprising that Mr. Bepko has recently been invited to serve on the UConn School of Pharmacy Advisory Board. In addition to his commitment to the School’s advisory board, Mr. Bepko engages in many community outreach endeavors. Recently, he participated in a well-attended Career Open House in Bridgeport, CT in order to guide high school seniors towards future career paths. While pharmacy education is not for everyone, he hopes that it will be helpful in opening up students to new possibilities. As a final piece of advice to students who hope to one day become pharmacists, Mr. Bepko describes how “it is critical for any health care professional to maintain their credibility. If you don’t know the answer, then get back to them and give them the right answer.” Although the environment in which he works under causes some duress, he says that most students “rise to the occasion.” Such achievement and personal development on the part of the students reflects a preceptor and a practice that offer indispensable opportunities.

A chance meeting with a classmate changed pharmacist Paul Lyman’s path from retirement to a second career, spanning 20 years, as a valued employee of the Bedford Veterans Administration Hospital and, fortunately for the students of MCPHS, a sought after ambulatory care preceptor. After a 27 year career as the owner of two successful independent pharmacies, Paul was ready to “kick back” and enjoy his retirement. Instead, Paul’s wife jokingly remarked that the kitchen was not big enough for the two of them, thus ending his dreams of retirement. While picking up a prescription, Paul reconnected with a classmate, the chief pharmacist at the Bedford VA Hospital, who was actively recruiting, and the rest is history. Paul has truly enjoyed being a preceptor and has humbly remarked, “I have learned more from the students than they have learned from me.” The students, however, have a different view. In 2008, Paul was voted the MCPHS Institutional Preceptor of the Year. Additionally, as one student stated “I loved this rotation. I didn’t want to leave. Paul Lyman is amazing. Where else do you have an opportunity to present at grand rounds!” The entire MCPHS community appreciates all you have done over the years for our students, Paul. You will be missed as a preceptor but we know you will remain a dear friend. We wish you the best as you finally begin your retirement at the end of the year. Maybe now, you will have enough spare time to enlarge your kitchen!

The Roosevelt University College of Pharmacy recently polled our P2 students, Class of 2014, and asked them which of their preceptors has had the greatest impact on their pharmacy practice education. We also asked them to identify the exceptional traits of the preceptor they named to support the choice they made. While their answers didn’t point to any one preceptor, the survey did tell us what characteristics make a great experiential educator in a student’s eyes.
Above all, they appreciated a preceptor who took the time to teach them about all aspects of the pharmacy’s environment and seemed to enjoy sharing his or her knowledge with the next generation of pharmacy professionals. The students also liked preceptors who asked challenging questions and made them accountable for finding the correct answers. Another positive trait that many of our students mentioned was the ability to listen to a student’s viewpoint and take the time to explain why it’s right or wrong. At Roosevelt, we feel privileged to call so many exemplary preceptors our partners. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your dedication to our students and the College of Pharmacy. This base is flexible, making it ideal for compounding a range of preparations, from those with high active load to those for sensitive skin areas. Versatile™ Cream Base contains no parabens or petrolatum. Visit www.versatilecream.com for more details. n Phytobase® Phytobase® contains Plant Oilbodies (Phytosomes), which have a high percentage of natural triglycerides for emolliency and skin moisturizing. The unique antioxidant and skin-softening properties of the Phytosomes make Phytobase® a more natural approach to skincare. Additionally, this cream base is self-emulsifying for easy incorporation of APIs and it contains no petrochemicals. n Pentravan® Pentravan® is an oil-in-water vanishing cream that uses liposomal technology to ensure reproducible and proven transdermal penetration of APIs. Studies using Franz Diffusion Cells compared Pentravan® to PLO gel in the delivery of both ketoprofen and testosterone. The results showed a 3.8-fold greater amount absorbed for ketoprofen and 1.7-fold greater amount absorbed for testosterone*. The study also show that drug reached peak permeation faster in Pentravan® than in PLO gel. Pentravan® is available in two formulations: Pentravan®, which can hold up to 25% API concentration and Pentravan® Plus, which can hold up to 35% API concentration. Both formulations are non-greasy, leave an elegant skin feel, and can be used with single APIs or combinations. Visit www.pentravan.com for more details. * Lehman PA, Raney SG. This sugar-free formula masks the taste for enhanced patient compliance, does not promote the formation of cavities, and has low caloric value. Company Background Statinzyme is a supplemental formula that was developed by Dr. Paul Faerstein, the owner of Zuckerman Pharmacy in Brooklyn, New York. As a second-generation pharmacist, Dr. Faerstein is keenly aware of the drug nutrient depletion side effects caused by statins and routinely recommends dietary supplements to his customers to help reduce and prevent those side effects. Often he found himself recommending 9 or more products that ended up costing his patients hundreds of dollars. Recognizing an opportunity and frustrated by the lack of an affordable solution in the marketplace, Dr. Faerstein decided to create it himself, and Statinzyme was born. Product Overview Statinzyme was developed by a doctor of pharmacy to reduce and aid in the prevention of side effects resulting from the use of cholesterol lowering medications. Such side effects may include muscle pain, muscle cramping, joint pain, mental confusion, memory loss, depression and liver damage. Numerous medical studies show that cholesterol-lowering medications may deplete your body of many essential vitamins and nutrients necessary to prevent side effects. The ingredients in Statinzyme are designed to replenish the vitamins and nutrients when taken in combination with your statin medication. A daily serving of 2 enteric-coated softgels will allow your medicine to work effectively while protecting your body from the side effects. There is evidence that the nine (9) ingredients in Statinzyme may also further reduce the risks of heart attacks and strokes. Statinzyme is made in the USA in a National Science Foundation (NSF) certified
and FDA audited facility that is compliant with the principles and guidelines of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). Statinzyme’s ingredients are valued at over $100. Statinzyme retails for only $39.99.

“ Cardiac disease is one of the major causes of death and disability in the United States and around the world. It dramatically decreases the quality of life in patients, even on an appropriate medication schedule that includes statins and beta blockers. These medications can be accompanied by undesirable side effects. The nutritional formula called Statinzyme has been developed to reduce the risks of heart attacks and strokes in patients taking cardiac medications. Its’ ingredients have been clinically proven to reduce muscle pain, muscle cramping, joint pain, mental confusion, memory loss and liver damage, associated with statin and beta blocker medications. Statinzyme can become an important component of a treatment plan increasing patient’s compliance and quality of life, while providing multi-organ nutrient support.”
