Contents WAY Around. Around. Around... Tired of the Same Old Carousel?

Carousel drug storage systems have been around for years. It’s time to consider a better way to automate your pharmacy drug storage and retrieval and eliminate work-arounds common with legacy carousel systems. Only BoxPicker Pharmacy Storage System: • Provides secure, fully automated storage of ambient, refrigerated and narcotic medications in a single unit • Allows multiple users to access multiple stations at the same time, without losing control of medication safety or transaction security. • Provides technicians access a single bin at a time, limiting access to drugs • Adapts to growing pharmacies through modular components

Seeing is Believing

Once you see the BoxPicker System in action, you’ll believe that it runs circles around the competition. Its robotic technology handles 200 transactions per hour, so BoxPicker picks three times faster than a carousel, enhancing productivity and ROI, while eliminating picking errors.

Ready to stop going around best practice with your carousel system? Come see what the future of pharmacy looks like at the ASHP MCM in Orlando (Swisslog Booth #1113).

The One-Container Pharmaceutical Waste Solution Simple, no worries, the highest level of technology, and best of all – full compliance. Clinicians simply put both the non-hazardous and the RCRA hazardous pharmaceutical waste in the same black container.* Clean Harbors, the largest hazardous waste incineration company in North America, will pickup, transport, dispose of, and keep you in full compliance. We own every step of the process and don’t broker your waste to someone else, like your red container medical waste provider has to. Ensuring compliance to waste segregation protocols can be difficult, both to train staff and to enforce. This can put your hospital at risk for regulatory action.

For more information: Call 800.645.8265 Email healthcareservices@cleanharbors.com www.cleanharbors.com * There are a few waste items that must be collected separately due to DOT regulations. Please contact Clean Harbors for more info.

Certified Geriatric Pharmacist Credential from CCGP

DOES YOUR PHARMACY HAVE A BOARD CERTIFIED GERIATRIC PHARMACIST?

Hospitals need board Certified Geriatric Pharmacists to manage the special needs of the increasing numbers of older adults—medication reconciliation, falls and other geriatric syndromes, and participating in geriatric teams (NICHE, ACE, etc.).

Only one credential has been established to recognize pharmacists with expertise in the care of older adults and the provision of medication therapy management services to geriatric patients— the Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (CGP), administered by the Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy. BECOME A CERTIFIED GERIATRIC PHARMACIST The CGP credential is ideal for the pharmacist who serves older adults, regardless of practice setting. Hospitals need CGPs because:

• The population is growing older. • Medicare reimbursement changes require more geriatric expertise. • Growing numbers of hospitals are establishing geriatric teams. • A recent review and meta-analysis has demonstrated the value of pharmacists on geriatric teams.

Around. Around.

Company Background Swisslog Healthcare Solutions (HCS) began as The Grover Company providing pneumatic tube systems for Detroit businesses. Serving the healthcare market since the early 1950’s, today Swisslog is the leading supplier of automation and software solutions for material transport and medication management in hospitals. Swisslog has installed facility-wide and pharmacy automation systems in more than 3,000 hospitals globally, including more than 2,000 in North America. Denver-based Swisslog HCS offers total system design, manufacturing, installation and customer support – providing an integrated solution for lean workflow and operations that enhances information access, patient safety and cost efficiency.

Product Overview The BoxPicker Pharmacy Storage System is the robotic replacement for vertical carousels, refrigerated drug storage and narcotic vaults. This integrated technology fully automates medication storage and retrieval steps to eliminate picking errors and increase safety at dispense. High-density BoxPicker Systems require no floor reinforcement and don’t expose users to internal moving parts. BoxPicker offers multiple workstations, providing opportunities to multi-task and speed up dispensing operations. Controlled access drawers limit users to one bin at a time. Its scan in and scan out practices optimize pharmacy workflow, while ensuring inventory control. Compared to carousels, BoxPicker has a 3-to-1 picking rate performance, enhancing pharmacy productivity and throughput. BoxPicker is part of an end-to-end, integrated solution of Swisslog equipment and software that controls and manages

Company Background Retail Management Solutions is the industry leader in point-ofsale technology for retail and outpatient pharmacy and is the only POS supplier specializing strictly in pharmacies. Having installed more POS systems in the independent and institutional pharmacy markets than any other company, RMS systems have become the industry standard. For outpatient pharmacies, we provide a seamless front-to-back transaction and information platform. Security and compliance are paramount, and our robust systems have built-in safeguards. Redundant storage, encrypted communications and certified payment mechanisms ensure protection and confidence. You can count on us for prompt service in all 50 states, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are a privately held company, with employees throughout the country — pharmacy technology professionals with hundreds of years of combined experience.

Company Background

At PCCA, we help pharmacists and prescribers create personalized medicine that makes a difference in patients’ lives. Our members solve some of their customers’ toughest medical challenges – all while running their own businesses. That’s why we provide more products, more education and more support than any other organization. We’re always working to help our members grow, and we’ve grown, too. What began in 1981 as a small network of pharmacists is almost 4,000 members strong, with 360 employees worldwide and five distribution centers serving the U.S., Canada and Australia. At PCCA, we’ve made it our business to support compounding pharmacists every step of the way – and then some. It’s all about bringing a level of service that makes you say, “WOW.”

Product Overview

While our members have access to over 4,560 active and non-active chemicals – more than any other compounding pharmacy supplier – the competitive advantage we bring our members is the industry’s most comprehensive quality control and assurance program we bring to those chemicals every day. Find out more at: www.pccarx.com/quality Here is the Quality Difference that PCCA Brings to Member Pharmacies Every Day: Every Lot – Not Just the Initial Lot – Is Tested

•  We do not solely rely upon the USP or manufacturer’s label to ensure the quality of the chemicals received. •  Every lot received is tested using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible analysis, melting point, specific gravity, solubility, and chemical identifications. • Additional testing of APIs is done using actual formulations.

14 Checks and Analyses are Performed on Each Chemical Lot

•  Nine qualitative and quantitative analyses are performed on every incoming chemical lot before it is released for repacking or sale. •  Each lot is tested against the certificate of analysis (C of A), including: USP, EP, NF, FCC, ACS and PCCA standards. •  After initial testing, all results are reviewed for accuracy by a second QC analyst. • Chemicals are tested only by degreed Chemical Analysts. PCCA Rejects Almost 200 Chemical Lots Per Year

•  PCCA is fully registered by the FDA, DEA and State of Texas as a manufacturer and follows current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). •  Only FDA-registered and GMP-certified manufacturers are used for the purchase of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). • Exclusive, proven bases and formulas. Proven Bases for More Patient Options

With access to more than 50 proprietary bases – unavailable to other compounders – your PCCA pharmacy will have more options to treat your patients, from VersaBase® topicals, specifically designed for BHRT delivery, to Lipoderm®, the industry’s only transdermal proven to deliver four drugs simultaneously. Comprehensive Education is the Key to Compounding

Continuing education is the key to quality compounding solutions. Your PCCA pharmacy has access to more Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited continuing education than anyone else. In 2013, PCCA will conduct more than 115 ACPEaccredited sessions across the United States, Canada and Australia, as well as scores of other training sessions from clinical and technicianrelated topics to sales and marketing. Complete Support

Member pharmacies have access to the industry’s best support with more than 30 pharmacists and pharmaceutical chemists on-hand to answer the toughest compounding and clinical questions. PCCA has more pharmacy consultants on staff than any other competitor, answering more than 500 calls a day from members with an average response time of less than 30 minutes.

It’s great to be part of the UConn team. Everyone wants to be a Husky! The University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy

Susan Roarty

Susan Roarty began her work with Target Pharmacy a little over six years ago and has been committed to the UConn preceptor program, where students are given the opportunity to take part in a one-month rotation at Target Pharmacy.

What Roarty loves about Target is that although it is a chain store, the pharmacy strives to serve their customers with the same warmth and personal atmosphere of a small independent store. This is exemplified by Roarty, who has been described by students as exemplifying a superior pharmacist by being “the perfect blend of caring and concern, yet still maintaining the professionalism you’d expect from a corporate store employee.” This is one of Roarty’s core values, and although she has been a pharmacist for over thirty years her passion is still strong. Her own experiences as a student with an internship with New England Medical Center in Boston, inspired her to become a mentor herself. “My role models from this first job have always made me realize the importance of guiding our future pharmacists.”

Roarty has been able to extend her passion to others, and one of her students admitted that “I have no doubt that working with Ms. Roarty has reinforced my passion for pharmacy, and it has been an utmost conducive experience to my career.” Upon hearing about her recognition as a Preceptor of the Year, Roarty was shocked and incredibly humble. “I was absolutely stunned to get this recognition. I am most certain that there are many other deserving and committed pharmacists that have helped guide your students.”

Preceptor Recognitions

Nicole Clark, PharmD, BCPS, MCPHS Boston Institutional Preceptor of the Year Nicole Clark, PharmD, BCPS, graduated from MCPHS University and started her first job in a community pharmacy in 2004. At the time, she never imagined that in just five short years, she would become a Clinical Pharmacy Manager at Hallmark Health, which includes Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford and Melrose Wakefield Hospital. She credits this evolution to her wonderful mentors who provided opportunities to grow and to learn all of the different skills that have made her into the respected pharmacist, preceptor, and mentor that she is today. Nicole was recently Nicole Clark, PharmD, BCPS voted MCPHS University’s Institutional Preceptor of the Year. She enjoys giving the Introductory (IPPE) students their first experience with a hospital pharmacy. She believes that IPPE students need exposure to a hospital setting, since the first time can be very stressful. After completing an introductory rotation with Nicole many students ask to complete their Advanced (APPE) rotations with her also. Nicole prepares her students for the next stage in their careers. She involves them in a leadership book club, and stages mock interviews for students who are planning on pursuing a residency. Nicole also was a driving force behind starting the residency program at Hallmark Health and its successful expansion. Next year, Hallmark Health will increase the residency program from three to six residents. All of us at MCPHS University would like to thank Nicole Clark for her devotion and dedication to our students.

Dr. George MacKinnon

The Class of 2014, which is the inaugural class of the Roosevelt University College of Pharmacy, recently completed their first APPE rotations. On this occasion, the Roosevelt College of Pharmacy would like to recognize the pharmacy team at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago for their dedication to teaching and going above and beyond to help our students succeed.

The student comments regarding the Northwestern Memorial team included the following: “They are all amazing … preparing us in different ways for what to expect while practicing both on APPEs and after graduation”, “They make this a great environment to learn in” and “The preceptor gave me a platform where I could be independent and progress yet feel comfortable enough to ask questions when I did not understand something”. Clearly, the team at Northwestern is committed to the success of pharmacy students, and thereby, the profession of pharmacy as a whole. Thank you to all of the preceptors on the pharmacy team at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for your time and dedication in providing our students with the opportunity to encounter and participate in innovative health care delivery through the pharmacy department. MedPickRx can be implemented with little disruption to your pharmacy and results in reduced inventory levels, improved efficiency, and increased accuracy. Additionally, MedPickRx uses less than half of the space while handling all of your inventory.

DOES YOUR PHARMACY HAVE A BOARD CERTIFIED GERIATRIC PHARMACIST?

Company Background The Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy was created by the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists in 1997. CCGP is a nonprofit corporation, autonomous from ASCP and with its own governing Board of Commissioners. CCGP offers a voluntary board certification examination for pharmacists in geriatric pharmacy practice and was accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies in March 2012. CCGP is a member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence and the Council on Credentialing in Pharmacy. Product Overview The Certified Geriatric Pharmacist examination is computerbased and is offered at computer test centers throughout the United States and Canada and in a number of other countries around the world. The exam is administered in four test windows throughout the year. The test is 150 questions in multiple-choice format. The initial certification period is five years, and periodic recertification is required. This may be accomplished by retaking the examination or by the Professional Development Program, with continuing education of 75 credit hours over the five-year period. Features & Options With the rapid growth in numbers of older adults in hospitals, and recent changes in Medicare reimbursement, the need for hospital pharmacists with the Certified Geriatric Pharmacist credential is growing as well. Hospitals need pharmacists who understand the unique medication-related needs of the elderly, including Beers criteria, geriatric syndromes, prescribing cascades, and issues related to transitions of care and medication

reconciliation. Hospitals increasingly need pharmacists to participate in geriatric teams, including ACE, NICHE, HELP, and similar geriatric team-based programs. A pharmacist with the Certified Geriatric Pharmacist credential should be a part of every hospital pharmacy team.

Pricing Information The fee to register for the initial examination is $600, and the fee for periodic recertification is $400, either by exam or by CE. In addition, a certification administration fee of $250 per five years is required, payable after meeting requirements for certification or recertification. CCGP also offers a Self-Assessment Examination (practice test) of 150 questions, available in web-based format for $85 or print format for $99.
