Research : Calendars
Research (MoodBoards on Calendars)
This piece is my first calendar idea to choose from in displaying my work in the exhibition and final piece of work to submit. This image is an example of the design to display the work of a portrait or landscape image as the whole image and then each month on the front of the image blending together. The dates for the month would either be on the front of the page or on the back but if it was displayed in the exhibition people wouldn’t be able to see the dates which would mean I would compromise by having dates on the front along with the month name. I really like this image because the idea behind displaying the image from a cieling and hanging down with the image of the place. I also like this idea because the text of the month is hiding and blending in with the images of the photograph. Also I think it works amazing as a portrait shot but as my photography will all be landscape I need to try make it as good as this piece but the other way but a positive with that is that it will have more room to put the dates of the month.
Research (Calendar Image 1 Analysis)
This piece is my second calendar design which was found on Pinterest. This artist used a flip calendar to display his work. The design behing his work is to use Illustrations as the front image on the calendar and then with the image use a nice big font text underneath the image to show where the illustration is meant to represent. I really like the layout of the dates underneath the title as it has a nice simple and clean layout. This piece is an inspiration to me because of the idea of a flip calendar and the design and layout of the piece appeals to how I would like to present my work. The images themself are quite strong and are very well drawn and illustrated to make nice and eye catching designs
Research (Calendar Image 2 Analysis)
This image is an example of a flip calandar and are used for offices tables. I really like the design idea of this as it’s very simple but effective. The design consists of a landscape image with the dates for the month underneath the image. This is a great idea for its purpose and I think works well as it is. I considered using this way as my final calendar but decided on a normal styled turning calendar as my images will work well with that specific style. What I don’t like about this piece is the images used for the design, I know it’s only an example but the images don’t compliment the calendar.
Research (Calendar Image 3 Analysis)
This is a example of different ways to display my days of the month, like you can see in the image this person has placed his photography inside of the numbers to approach a different feel to the audience. I really like this piece and feel it is very strong as he has used a new technique and way to show his calendar dates. Also I believe the quality of the photography is strong so makes the numbers look even better. The only negative I have is for my project I don’t think I could fit all my images in these numbers or even letters but would be looking to create things like this in the future.
Research (Calendar Image 4 Analysis)
Here is another example of different calendar designs. This example shows different Illustrations of different climates across the world (for example the desert, the mountains) and he shows these by producing a 12 month calendar with some amazing layout and illustrations. I am a huge fam of this piece and even though I cannot illustrate I do really like this calendar and would like to give it ago in future times. The only negative about this piece of work is the dates of each month aren’t visable and very hard to read digitally.
Research (Calendar Image 5 Analysis)
Here is my final example of Calendar researches and when researching I found this very different style of designs for the calendar with the design being displayed in a bookmark form but with the image quite big on each page with some nice text and the dates underneath the image. I really like this design s its unique and shows different areas of design and he has chosen to display it in a form people aren’t used to and I think its an amazing piece. The colour sequence has a nice flow to it, each image is strong and although the text isn’t 100% visable I still like the layout of the text and image.

Research (Yorkshire Locations moodboard)
Here is a location photography image. The image is of London and features the London Eye, River Themes and House of Commons. This image is a very nice still image of London at night and has a strong effect on the eye. I like this specific image as the colour balance from each spot on the image is highlighted well and gives the viewer a numourous amount of focus points to look at. I believe its a strong image also as it shows a few famous parts of London and you get a feel of just how beautiful the city looks. This would have been and approach to have my calendar like this but my project is of daytime photography.
Research (Landscape image 1 analysis)
This is a very unusual but quite nice photographic image. The image is of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. The image is a back and white styled image but the phtographer has made the image over exposed to use a different approach to the image. The image shows people walking around the area with the eiffel tower faded in the back of the image. The main focus point of the image is the eiffel tower but as it is hardly visable you have a second glance of the shot. I really like this image as it shows a new way of photography instead of a normal attraction image and it is very strong, people may argue that it is too over exposed but the photographer makes it more interesting.
Research (Landscape image 3 analysis)
This is a location shot of a miniature waterfall in the Yorkshire dales. In this shot you get the feel of a forest but with a nice shed type house with the flowing water next to it. The photographer has taken a nice image here and I feel it is quite interesting he hasn’t gone for a nice green part of the forest and instead a browny quite boring part but made it more interesting in this image. I really like the addition to the waterfall as it gives a more beautiful look to the image as people referre to waterfalls as a nice image so next to this shed it looks like a nice shot and I really like this image. Only thing I would change about this is maybe add some green to the shot with Photoshop to make it more bright.
Research (Landscape image 5 analysis)
Here is the last location shot I researched and this shot is my favourite due to the fast pace river flow but also with the colour from the river, grass and the clouds which all work well together to make a nice clean shot. This image is of just a boring normal place in yorkshire dales but as the photographer has had a different approach to the image by placing his camera on a faster shutter speed and taking the same image all day to get this nice river flow but also have an effect on the clouds to make them look like day and night. This image is very nice and good at the eye and gives a lot of veriety in the shot. I feel the photographer has taken which would have been a normal image and edited it to make a very beautiful shot of the Yorkshire dales.

Research (Tour De Yorkshire locations)
The Tour de Yorkshire is a three-day road cycling race. The first edition will be held on 1–3 May 2015 in Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom. It is promoted by the Amaury Sport Organisation. The idea for the race came about as a legacy event following the significant success of the visit of the 2014 Tour de France to the country as it started in Leeds in West Yorkshire. The race starts on the 1st to 3rd May 2015and starts in Bridlington and finishes in Leeds on the Sunday. The event has 144 cyclists taking part including Tour De France winner and Olympic winner Bradley Wiggins who will be taking part in the sporting event. The event is a brand new race and it is the first time the event is taking place.

Proposal
This project is the Final Major Project, the project to let you have full freedom of what the theme of your project is. My idea is to photograph areas around Yorkshire where the Tour de Yorkshire will be passing through. The idea is to take images around 12 locations which the cycle race will be passing through and choose a final 12 photographs to display in a calendar. The idea came as its the first Tour De Yorkshire and I originally was going to just photograph Yorkshire but now I have a theme and meaning to use Yorkshire. The locations I will be using are Wakefield, Leeds, Barnsley, York, Beverley and surrounding areas of these places. The idea is to go to these locations for a day and get images of where the cycle roads and lanes are in the area to show the route and then have a sequence of 12 images which will be the routes from which the cyclists race through. The idea is to get images of the cyclists for the first image and then for the remaining 11 images photograph cycle lanes, signs of the event in areas and people. The idea for the Calendar design is to have a physical copy of desk flip calendar possibly A5 or smaller and then for the exhibition diplay with a a2 print and hang up from the ceiling but things may change closer to the day. The deadline is the 8th July so I am hoping to get all photography and design work complted by 1st June in order to achieve the photography I will be needing a Canon 60D or 600D and the 15 - 85mm lense.

Research: Exhibition
BRITAIN FROM THE AIR EXHIBITION Britain from the air is a exhibition based in Leeds City Centre located outside the Leeds City Library. The exhibition shows 100 photographs on huge canvas’s. The images are of landscapes around britain of historic landmarks and nice sceneries in places such as Bath to places like Liverpool. The exhibition started on12th March 2015 and finishes on 7th May 2015 and is open 24 hours a day for 8 weeks and is free to visit. The exhibition was brought to bring people together and reconnect britain with landscape photgraphy. This exhibition was great use for me as the theme of my project is landscape photography of Yorkshire locations for the Tour De Yorkshire so this was really good to have images of yorkshire and other places of britain to visit for free and to get inspiration for my own project with these locations. The only negative thing about this project is that some of the images weren’t the best to choose from and the best quality but a lot of the pieces chosen were quite nice to see.

Evaluation
The final major project is the final assignment of the year and my idea for the FMP was to create a 12 month calendar of locations of which the Tour De Yorkshire in 2015 passed through. The idea came from a sudden interest in the race after research and hearing about it on social network sites, The tour started on the 1st May until the 3rd May. It was seperated to three different stages so on the 1st day it started at Scarborough and finished in Bridlington, the 2nd stafe started in Selby and finished in York and the 3rd stage started in Wakefield and finished in Leeds. I decided to stick my calendar to Stage 2 and 3 of the race due to the locations being possible to get to, the 12 locations I chose were split into main passing locations for the two stages or places people haven’t heard of so people know every place which the tour went through. I managed to go to two live parts of the race, one was Selby the start of stage 2 and then Leeds which was the finish area of stage 3. I planned the dates of which I was going to travel to each location on my InDesign document and at first seemed straight forward but some days I planned to go to a place but had to rearrange on a few occasions either because of bad weather, funds or not being able to book equipment out but all places were finished before the exhibition and the deadline. The images I planned to take in each place except the Selby and Leeds images were of roads of which the cylists travelled through or a well known area of the location.
The locations I photographed for the tour were Selby, Beverley, Market Weighton, York, Wakefield, Barnsley, Marsden, Slaithewaite, Holmfirth, Cragg Vale, Hebden Bridge and Leeds. The first 4 locations were stage 2 then 8 were stage 3. Each locations I travelled to by train but Holmfirth and Cragg Vale I had to catch buses as they had no station and also Beverley and Market Weighton I drove to with my dad. The strongest images were the Leeds, Slaithewaite and Selby images as the quality of the images came out very high quality and strong and were used with a 24-105mm lense which gave me the chance of capturing more in the images. My worst images were of Wakefield, Marsden and Holmfith as it rained in each location which meant I couldn’t get the best images and stay as long as planned so all three of those locations were cut short which was a turnover in the project. Each shoot was used with a 60D Canon DSLR camera with a 15-85mm and a 24-105mm lense, all equipment was booked from Stores and gave me some amazing shots. For the shots usually my aperture was between 5 and 8 never higher and my shutter speed was on a low shutter speed when taking still shots or on a high shutter speed when taking the photos of the bikes in Selby and Leeds, I left my ISO on Auto a lot of the time as I’m not the most knowledgable with camera settings but have got a lot better with them. With the design of the calendar I went with the simple flip calendar (example showed in my research) as I felt with the images I had it would
look quite good. I went with a basic layout of the image of the location on the left side of the page with the locations name on the image and the month of the year and then underneath the image on another page I had all the dates of the calendar for the year of 2016 with all the holiday in the right dates of the calendar aswell. The font used for the calendar was ‘KEEP CALM’ which I found on DaFont.com. I had some feedback from a tutor and told me to change the background colour white instead of the blue I had as its easier to write on and looks better which at first I wasn’t sure about as it was more hassle than anything else and had to start the calendar again but the end result was very simple but a very nice calendar but unfortunatly I had problems with printing the calendar as I thought I could print it at home but I left it last minute and ended up sticking it on an old sketchbook and was dissapointed with myself as it felt all the hard work of going to these locations and money I spent was wasted on the final product as I left it too late to print, that was my main problem with this project the final printing of the calendar. I had a few negatives with this project which were the printing of the calendar which to prevent this from happening in future would be to be motivated and not leave anything until the last minute. Another problem was the quality of the Wakefield images and this could have been resolved by taking them again on a different day or putting more time into them when I was there. The last problem was the planning side of the project, I feel I could have planned when I was going to print and start my calendar and have more control with
the planning and to resolve this I could do a schedule to plan better and stick to it. The positives of the project was that I have seen new places I have never been before in Yorkshire and also have improved my photography skills in location photography. Anothe positive is even though the calendar wasnt printed it looked really good when finished and was impressed with the outcome. Also a lot of the location images came out really good especially the shots of the tour and some of the other places like Slaithewaite and Cragg Vale. Overall I feel pleased with the project and it was my favourite project of the year as I had complete freedom, there’s a lot I’ve learnt this year about myself and my skills in photography and I feel I can take them to the next step and have developed skills I already knew. The project itself had some negatives and I let myself down with the printing of the calendar which was the final piece but the exhibition was a success and the final prints I used I liked and had a solid quality to them. I believe this project has been a lot of hard work with the locations but one I have enjoyed and hopefully pulled off.
