Cities Ecology: Defining Sustainable
Defining Sustainable Cities
2
A sustainable city is an urban development designed to have a positive impact on the environment, society and the economy. Sustainable initiatives are built into the fabric of the city to minimise pollution, waste and carbon emissions and give something back to society or the natural environment.

Public Transport Encouraging use of public transport by making that transport efficient, affordable and ecofriendly is one way to help build a sustainable city. Examples include electric metro or tram services to help reduce carbon emissions from vehicles on the road.
2
Renewable Energy Creating sources of renewable energy for use within the city is another way to help make urban areas more sustainable. This could involve city-funded solar farms to provide energy and improve air quality.
3
Green Buildings The buildings that make up a sustainable city are equipped with an array of technologies to make them greener, such as natural building materials, solar panels, smart systems for heating and cooling and enhanced insulation and ventilation. Green buildings can reduce carbon emissions by almost a third.
