Welcome to our 40 th annual production sale! Greetings Friends!
Welcome to our 40th Annual Production Sale! It is indeed a blessing and honor to have been in the purebred seedstock producing business this many years. As always, we are constantly studying and learning about new genetics that we can offer to our customers. We search for high maternal traits, carcass merit, and easy keeping cattle that earn their own keep in our environment. We feed the bulls and heifers a TMR that enables them to develop at a natural rate of gain. These cattle are ready to go on and be fertile producers for you, our customers. We will have carcass data, scrotal measurements, and current weights available on a data sheet three days before the sale. Please contact any of us with any questions you may have and feel free to stop at the ranch anytime for a visit. It is truely a pleasure to show you around and see how our operation runs. We look forward to seeing you March 22nd at Kist Livestock! The Lodoen’s Leonard and Maysil, Matt and Jennie, Ben, Rylee, Molly, Maddy, Wyatt and Zane

We are excited to be offering this tremendous set of Game Face bull calves to you, our customers, this year. Game Face is doing what we expected him to do when we purchased him as the top selling Red Angus bull in 2012. He is putting moderate birth weight calves on the ground and is siring some of the top animals in the show ring. He produced the 2016 Champion Bull at the NWSS in Denver! And, again this year, is one of the most talked about bulls in the breed. The bulls in our sale are strong muscled, heavy footed, correct in their kind, and have plenty of fertility with their scrotal measurements. Now that we are calving out his daughters, we can see that they have beautiful udders and plenty of milk as well. His 2015 born bull calves averaged 78 lbs at birth. We have semen available on this tremendous, proven herdsire.

The calving ease bull you need to look at! He is out of a 2 year old and she weaned him off at 681 lbs and came out of the pasture in beautiful condition. She is a moderate cow with outstanding udder and teat shape. I would expect this calf to work extremely well on heifers of any size and cows alike!

Another Game Face, heifer, bull and especially as this guys dam has never thrown a calf over 70 lbs. She’s an older, bigger cow that we like to keep around because of her excellent leg structure, easy keeping, easy fleshing ability to raise a calf without much effort. Use him if you like to sleep at night!

Again, heifer bull candidate for sure. He’s stout made, travels with true dimension and a wide base, and stands on a sound foot. His dam always brings in a solid calf at weaning and maintains her pretty, fault free udder. He will produce moderate sized daughters that will be easy keepers just like his dam and sisters that we have in our herd.

Herdsire, calving ease, daughter keeping kind of bull here!! This guy was turning heads in Denver this year. Copperhead Road’s dam is one of those nice sized, dark haired, strong footed, no hassle kind of female. Her udder and fertility strength should pass down to some awesome replacement females. This guy has huge potential for we believe his calves will be standouts and they will build a cowherd!

WOW!! Check out this calf. Most powerful Game Face to be born yet. He weaned in at 875 lbs, has stood out since birth because of his size, color, and style. If you see this calf from behind, you are going to want calves like that to send to the feedlot. His dam has a MPPA of 110!! That means huge maternal power. We’d use him on heifers, but because of his maternal grandsire, Split Shift, he could sire some larger calves. Cadillac is a special bull, look him up! Also, keep his daughters if you are looking to add easy keeping females to your line up.

VARSITY BLUES BULLS
Here is another outcross herd sire that we purchased for strong maternal genetics. The calf crops out of Varsity Blues are easy calving, easy growing, dark cherry red cattle. We are pleased that Varsity Blues average birthweights on his 2015 bull calves was 77 lbs. We are calving out the first daughters and they are what we expected with tidy udders, great mothering ability and adequate milking strength. Check out his sons on sale day and I’m sure you’ll be impressed on the leg structure and foot size as well. These calves also have excellent scrotal development to ensure plenty of fertility. Blues sired the 2016 Denver Reserve and Champion spring Bull calf. We also have semen available for sale on this top end herd sire.

We took this guy to Denver and he was Reserve Champion in the Spring bull division. We sold a half brother out of this guy’s dam to Six Mile and he’s been a very successful herdsire for them. Clint Eastwood brought 826 lbs to the chute at weaning time! We predict him to produce higher quality grade calves. He’s backed by maternal power, phenotype, and calving ease galore. He is herdsire material all day long.

He is fortunate enough to have a dam who does a great job with a MPPA of 103, has a gorgeous udder, and is structurally correct. This calf has huge potential. Look at this calf’s age. Now look at his weaning weight, weaning ratio of 120 and first time momma that earned an MPPA of 108!! If this cow does this again, she is going to a flush facility. She carries a pretty udder, a beautiful front end, and with Travelocity as a sire, her foot and leg structure is divine. We believe this young calf has the potential to be a big time herdsire as well as the phenotype to make a competitive show bull! Call Matt or Jennie and let’s talk about this calf’s options. We should note that we predict this bull’s contribution towards fast growing steer calves for the feedlots as well!

This guys dam does what we ask. She has an MPPA of 104, has a big foot, sound legs, nice udder form, and great mothering ability. She always brings in a heavy calf at weaning. Not too many cows have a calf that ratios a 124 at weaning. Take a look at him for those fast growing steer calves to send to market!

ENHANCER BULLS
We purchased this Saga 1040Y son from Piepers at their 2014 production sale. Enhancer brings a lot to the table with his heavy weaning calves that are phenotypically correct. We are excited to calve out the first daughters next spring. We believe that we combined Enhancer with the right kind of cows to bring our customers excellent growth, strong maternal characteristics and easy keeping kind of cattle. The 2015 born Enhancer bull calves averaged 84 lbs at birth. These calves hit the ground growing and do so while staying structurally sound.

We are very pleased with this calf as he combines attributes from Saga 1040Y and Wind Chill. You will appreciate the maternal qualities he passes down to his daughters as his Wind Chill dam is a beautifully uddered, strong footed, strong milking ability. She weaned this guy off at 695 pounds and that’s more than adequate for a first calver.

These two bulls are a perfect example of maternal power. Their dam raised them both, but doesn’t get MPPA credit since she raised twins. She brought them home with weaning weights of 620 and 701 respectively and held up beautiful body condition besides. I would use these guys on larger framed heifers or cows since we can’t get a true test of their birthweight since they were twins.

WIND CHILL BULLS
Wind Chill was selected as an outcross bull to use in our program. He sired the bull calf Reserve Champion in Denver 2012. He is producing daughters that are moderate framed, great milkers with tidy udders. We are quite pleased with the females as dams in our herd as well as high competitors in the show ring. We have a number of Wind Chill sons in this sale. Take note of their heavy muscle, fertility, and functional legs and feet. The 2015 Wind Chill bull calves averaged 79 lbs at birth. We also have semen available for sale on this top end herd sire.

ZIP LINE BULLS
CED
We purchased Zip Line out of the Rust Mountain View Production Sale in 2013. He, like his sire Rambo 502, is known to produce great females. We have been pleased with the calving ease that Zip Line has expressed in our herd. This set of bull calves is by far the best that we’ve produced out of Zip Line and we are very pleased and excited to offer them to our customers. The average birthweight on the 2015 born bull calves was 78 lbs, so there is huge potential for heifer bull credibility here. The phenotype on these bulls is exceptional as well. There are no surprises with these calves.

If you are looking for a herdbull to add tremendous muscle power and some frame to your herd, this Troubador son is your bull. When you see this calf in person you will be amazed at how complete he is. His momma brought him home from pasture at 895 lbs. He ranked 2nd amongst all bull calves with a ratio of 123 at weaning. You shouldn’t have a hard time finding this calf on sale day as he stands out just like his half brother, L83 Matador that Semex is now marketing as one of the highest marbeling bulls in the breed. His carcass data will be available by the 20th of March. I also need to note that this guy’s half sisters are doing an outstanding job raising their first calves.

Heifer bull material here in this own son of HOBO 1961. I had a small amount of semen left and this bull was one result. HOBO’s first time momma, that we purchased from Six Mile, did a great job weaning him off at 705 lbs and is carrying a beautiful udder to boot. We expect big things from her in future offspring. If you are breeding replacement heifers, this is your bull as there should be no surprises at calving. Use him with peace of mind. -2525

This King Ranch son is the only one in the sale. His dam is none other than the cow that carried the Semex bull, L83 Matador, that was purchased in our 2014 sale. With a MPPA of 110 this cow works hard for us. We have successfully shown each of her offspring and those offspring are also top producers in our herd. This calf has huge maternal potential along with the fact that King Ranch is one of the very top Red Angus carcass data bulls to date. If you are looking for a bull to sire big calves at the weaning scale with that look of great feeder steers, check him out. If you are looking for replacement females with huge maternal quality, he’s your guy. You cannot miss with this one!

We purchased Dakota’s dam out of Olson’s 2015 production sale to add some different genetics to our herd and she had him at side. This calf just exploded with growth and has was an eye catcher all summer in the pasture. His adjusted weaning weight of 857 lbs is tremendous and gives us high expectations of his dam. She is a lovely cow with excellent structure, which is no surprise. This guy will put pounds on your calves.

Ranchers Guide to EPDS Courtesy of the Red Angus Association of America
Calving Ease Direct (CED) predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of two year-old heifers. Producers want live calves - born unassisted. Selecting on actual birth weight is flawed; it is influenced by nongenetic factors such as nutrition and weather (ambient temperature). While BW EPD removes these non-genetic factors, Red Angus’ CED EPD is the best predictor of calving ease. The CED EPD includes variation in BW plus other influential genetic factors such as gestation length, calf shape, etc. Birth Weight EPD (BW) predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of Red Angus’ Calving Ease Direct(CED)EPD. Weaning Weight EPD (WW) predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight EPD(YW)predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight(adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Milk EPD (MILK) predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal’s daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves. Total Maternal EPD (TM) predicts the rancher’s actual observation of weaning weights of calves raised by an animal’s daughters. TM includes the daughters milk EPD plus half of her genetic contribution to her calf’s weaning weight EPD. The formula for TM EPD is: TM EPD = Milk EPD + 1/2 (WW EPD) Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. While puberty is a prerequisite, many factors influence pregnancy rate. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers a tool which selects for what is economically relevant to ranchers pregnant heifers. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) predicts the probability of a given animal’s daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Replacement heifers should be able to calve on their own. Red Angus’ CEM EPD offers the industry’s most reliable prediction to address that concern. It includes not only the predisposition for a female to calve unassisted, but also her contribution to
-28-
her calf’s traits (birth weight, calf shape, etc. that make it more likely to be born unassisted. Stayability (STAY) - predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will remain in the herd until at least six years of age. University studies have shown the breakeven point on replacement heifers is five to six years of age. Females that don’t stay in the herd that long are losing money, and they also contribute to a higher rate of replacement Marbling Score (MARB) predicts differences for carcass marbling score as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. Yield Grade (YG) predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score, and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units. YG EPD is calculated using the genetic predictions of CW, REA and FAT EPDs. The reliability of Red Angus’ YG EPD is enhanced by using both ultrasound and actual carcass data in the calculation of REA and FAT EPDs. Carcasss Weight (CW) predicts differences in hot carcass weight and is expressed in pounds. Because Red Angus’ CW EPD is a multi-trait model which includes birth, weaning, and yearling weight data, the prediction is not subject to culling bias. Thus, it provides a more reliable EPD as compared to only using actual carcass weights. This computation allows for the use of weights taken on ~57,000 animals per year as compared to only ~1,500 animals per year with actual carcass weight observations. Increased Carcass Weight tends to detrimentally affect Yield Grade; the calculation of which also includes Rib Eye Area and Fat Thickness. Rib Eye Area (REA) predicts differences of carcass Rib Eye Area between the 12th and 13th rib. Increased Rib Eye Area has a beneficial effect on Yield Grade which also includes Carcass Weight and Fat Thickness. 12th Rib Fat Thickness (FAT) predicts differences for carcass fat depth over the 12th rib, as expressed in inches. Increases in fat thickness has a detrimental effect on Yield Grade.

The Tradition
Some folks just don’t get it. They think owning cattle makes no sense. It takes too much time, too much equipment, not to mention the expense. But the fondest memories of my life -they might think sound funnywere made possible by Mom and Dad, ‘cause they spent the time and spend the money. You see, the most important lessons helping values grow so strong, come from loving cattle and passing the tradition on. -Don Bishop-
