March 27, 2018
Tuesday, 1 PM | Kist Livestock | Mandan, ND 42ND ANNUAL PRODUCTION SALE
-1-
Welcome to our 42 nd annual production sale! Greetings Friends!
It’s hard to believe that our 42nd Annual Production is fast approaching. We look forward to seeing old and new friends alike. We believe that we have a very uniform set of bulls to bring to town. We pride ourselves in honest cattle that produce honest product. There are no fads or unrealistic numbers to ponder with our cattle. We have always worked for a very productive cow who needs little attention to bring a heavy product to the scale at weaning time. Each of our herd sires has unique characteristics with one main goal: to have the attributes that can produce a good momma cow. When we say that a bull is a true heifer bull, that means he can be used on 850 plus pound heifers that should be able to deliver a calf unassisted. In our very brutal cold winters we cannot expect a 60 lb calf to hit the ground and then make 650 lbs at weaning. We like them honest from birth to finish. Something new this year, we would like to offer our customers the opportunity to earn the most on their commercial, market calves at sale time by giving our producers 50 free Red Angus Certified tags for their calves for each bull that you purchase from our 2018 sale. Jennie will help you set up an account with the Red Angus Association to obtain those tags and put them on calves at birth or weaning. It’s a great program and I’d like to see our customers take advantage!!! Please consider visiting the ranch prior to March 22 to view the bulls and earn a chance at three $500 credits to be drawn for sale day. Also, anyone who is able, please come and walk thru the bulls Monday March 26, in Mandan and we will have time for refreshments as well. We look forward to visiting with each of you!! The Lodoen’s Leonard and Maysil, Matt and Jennie, Ben, Rylee, Molly, Maddy, Wyatt and Zane

SPIDERMAN 2E was born to add muscle and rib shape to your herd. Straight up MASS when it comes to this bull. He comes at you with a huge foot, super stout in his structure, and that overall capacity that us as cattlemen are looking for. He was born to a Tidal Wave daughter that doesn’t ever need attention and always raises one that tips the scale. Spiderman’s dam has an 82 lb birthweight average on her offspring.

The first son out of our herdsire, Red T-K Redeam 18C, whom we purchased from Kevin Dorance at T Bar K Ranch, is one to strongly consider. EDGAR 4E is dark, he is powerful, and he’s out of a beautiful RED TER-RON FULLY LOADED daughter that we purchased from Six Mile Ranch as a calf. The Redeem calves averaged 78 lbs in his first calf crop on our Ranch.

L83 EMPIRE BUILDER 6E, has amazing style and the look of a herdsire. A bull that looks like a good breeding bull is bound to be one! The offspring out of L83 Matador 43A have proven to be long spined, big middled, and have the ability to grow uniformly and ideally. They also carry carcass traits that the commercial breeder is seeking. Empire Builder’s dam has effortless calving ease numbers besides the ability to raise a great one like this. This calf was one of the heaviest at weaning and also yearling weight time. Lot 4 is in the top 3% for WW and 5% for YW.

Looking for a HEIFER BULL? ELIPTICA 7E will make a heifer bull indeed. This bull has extra muscle shape, a moderate frame size, and a big foot. The Spencer offspring averaged 79 lbs so far in our herd and we are never disappointed with the outcome at calving or weaning. We are currently calving the first Spencer daughters, and they are a delight. Beautiful udders and great mothers. We strongly recommend this bull if you are looking to keep replacement females for your own herd.

ANOTHER BIG TIME HEIFER BULL. This bull displays calving ease, length of spine, and new genetics with Redeem as his sire. His dam has a 104 MPPA which tells us that she may very well need to be in the donor program. This calf has the advantage of a bit more frame than many of the Redeem calves giving him a foot ahead to wean heavier calves.

Heres some full brothers that can do some damage. ECHO CHAMBER 16E AND ELBERT 18E are out of the very famous Bertha cow who has raised two herdsires that we’ve sold to Six Mile Red Angus. This cow does not miss. These two flush brothers have mass, they have bone structure, and with the maternal backing of Bertha and the mating to Matador, you will have carcass merit besides. 109 is their dam’s MPPA and her average BW on her offspring is 82 lbs. You cannot go wrong here. These boys ranked in the top 3% for WW and YW. 5 -5-

Here we have another, calving ease, Spencer son to use on heifers. Spencer averages 79 lbs at birth and 705 lbs at weaning. This calf has a little more frame than a typical Spencer son. He walks on a great foot and bone structure, has massive internal capacity, and will give you calves you can be proud to have in your operation.

EXCEL 21E is the only King Ranch son in the offering so don’t pass him by. He’s a moderate package with excellent muscle shape and powerful build. King Ranch has added excellent carcass merit in our herd and I’d expect that from 21E as well. 732 lbs at weaning is something to be proud of at the sales barn.

EXCENTRIC 22E is the result of trying out some Boot Jack Ranch Gamble semen and we think the result is pretty great. Excentric has the look of a powerful herdbull that will add pounds to the calf crop. Historically, 22E’s dam has produced 82 lb calves on average at birth. Look to use this bull for frame, muscle, and lots of maternal strength. Keep his daughters for replacements to build up your herd.

NEW GENETICS! ELVIS 24E is a first offering from our very proven sire, Red Zone, who we’ve used on two years of replacement heifers and he’s the real deal. This calf does carry a bit more frame than most Red Zone’s but he gets that from his Travelocity bred dam. When a first calver weans off 673 lbs at 205 days we call that a success. 24E has that long, easy doing look.

If you are looking for female making power, heavy calves at weaning, heavy muscle, and strong feet and legs, don’t pass up this Wind Chill son. This calf may slip the radar but he shouldn’t . He’s a complete package and he’s a true example of numbers don’t mean a thing if you know that he comes from a damn good cow and even better sire. Find this guy and you won’t be sorry. Easy calving as well!!

EBENEZER 43E can be described in one work, POWER!! He carries tons of muscle, plenty of middle, and a sound structure to hold it all together. This is what we were wanting when we bought Crosby. More size, more pounds, big bone and heavy foot. He’s a cow bull. Crosby’s calves may be a bit heavier but weaning time is just plain FUN!! We’ve got lots of Crosby daughters in the replacement pen and we can’t wait to calve them out! Retaining 1/3 semen interest

HERDSIRE SUPREME!! The natural son of Bertha 077. She needs no introduction, but she did raise Super Duty and Clint Eastwood, the two herdsires that Six Mile have added to their program with huge success. Again, no nonsense influences on this calf. Crosby for some size and Mulberry Dam for maternal strength. She always raises a good one. This bull has loads of hair coat to pass to calves at birth for harsh winter endurance. The Crosby calves had loads of vigor when born, another quality we find extremely important. This bull can be used on cows without question.

We are very fond of the Troubador calves as they have typically been heavy weaning cattle. The Troubador cattle add some frame to their offspring and have daughters that milk wonderfully, despite what their numbers tell you. Again, Troubadors are the “know your cattle and go from there” type that keep us happy and keep us using Troubador semen. This calf had a rough start as his dam died at pasture when he was a month old. So from there he managed to still bring in 672 lbs at 205 days giving us all we need to know that he would have been one of the heaviest had he had a momma.

Buy - Back opportunity New for 2018 from L83 and Nick Mathern: You all are aware that Nick Mathern has been bringing high quality commercial red first calf pairs to offer at our sale the past 5 years. This year we would like to offer a buy back incentive to you, our customers. For any of you that would chose to, Nick or one of us from L83 would come to view your heifer born calves out of the L83 bulls that you purchased. If the heifers are of replacement quality, Nick would offer to purchase your group at a premium and then develop them at his feedlot, breed them, and offer them for sale at our production sale or off of his ranch. Heifers need to be viewed by Nick or one of the L83 crew prior to weaning. We feel that this is a great way to offer the highest quality commercial replacements from L83 genetics to those looking to increase their red herds.

Ranchers Guide to EPDS Courtesy of the Red Angus Association of America
Calving Ease Direct (CED) Breeding Heifers? Select bulls with a high CED to increase the probability that the heifers will calve unassisted. Birth Weight (BW) Predicts differences in birth weight. BW is included in the CED EPD, so simplify your decisions by selecting bulls based on CED instead of BW Weaning Weight (WW) & Yearling Weight (YW) Predicts differences in weight at weaning and yearling. While selection based on these growth measures can increase your pay weight, be cautious what the bull’s other EPDs are. Milk (MILK) Predicts differences in weaning weight of daughter’s progeny due to milk production. Maintenance Energy (ME) Selecting bulls with a lower ME EPD will decrease the amount of feed his daughters will require to maintain body weight. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) Retaining heifers? Select bulls with a high HPG to increase the percentage of exposures that result in a calving observation.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) Another number to pay attention to if you are retaining heifers. Selecting bulls with a high CEM will increase the probability of those daughters calving unassisted. Stayability (STAY) - The most important trait if your goal is developing cows that stay productive, thus increasing your profitability. Bulls that have a high Stay EPD are expected to sire daughters that remain productive in the herd until at least 6 years of age. Marbling Score (MARB) Select bulls with high MARB EPD to increase the number of progeny that grade Choice or Prime Yield Grade (YG) Marketing calves on a grid? Placing selection pressure on YG EPD will decrease the number of YG discounts on grid marketed progeny Carcasss Weight (CW) Selecting bulls with a high CW EPD will increase the weight of the hanging carcass, which directly impacts revenue. Rib Eye Area (REA) Need to add muscle? Select bulls with a high REA EPD to increase rib eye area, which favorably increases Yield Grade. Backfat (FAT) Need to reduce waste in carcasses? Select bulls with a low FAT EPD to reduce back fat, which favorably increases Yield Grade.

The Tradition
Some folks just don’t get it. They think owning cattle makes no sense. It takes too much time, too much equipment, not to mention the expense. But the fondest memories of my life -they might think sound funnywere made possible by Mom and Dad, ‘cause they spent the time and spend the money. You see, the most important lessons helping values grow so strong, come from loving cattle and passing the tradition on. -Don Bishop-
