In the past 510 days since i was elected as the president of this organization, “What is the leadership we need?” is the question most frequently asked. Till this moment in time, I still I do not have a concrete answer to the question and I believe it will take a life journey to find out the answer as it varies across different individuals. However, I have gained sufficient inspirations from all the experiences - people I met, conversations encountered, visited places, projects joint and tasks that we have achieved together. People often try to define leadership from grouping the common characteristics or skills of those people who have succeeded, generating labels and most importantly neglecting the few essential elements that are able to build the leadership across time and different situations. They are: purpose driven, strong belief, persistent actions and daring to strive. AIESEC is the largest student run organization with exchange being its essence. Although there are different similar experiences out available nowadays, we kept the unique value of AIESEC experiences. We are self driven to the purpose we have set for youth leadership. We commit to it as we believe in it. We consistently act in front of the challenges and we are stepping out of our comfort zone each day in order to achieve a better self. This year, we have generated more than 400 exchange experiences and 800 experiential learning opportunities to activate the leadership inside us. It is the mission of youth. We are honored to take up the responsibility to build a better society. You may wonder how this works? The experience is just like planting the seed of the four core elements in our heart for the future life. I have never imagined sharing my thought of leadership with 12 youth leaders from different nations in a hostel in Serbia till 4am spontaneously. We developed the sense of ownership to the mission and responsibility for new generation from this self-driven experience. I would like to end my welcoming passage with an experience I had recently. I have just climbed the Mount Kinabalu. It was not an easy task for a person without professional training, like me, and it was easy to regret spending vocation in such a tough way. I was about to give up just before approaching the peak but climbing up the mountain is the only purpose of my trip. Believing myself and willing to persistently walk each step ahead without fear was the only way that kept me going. It is the same for AIESEC - we believe that each of us can be an element that link to world peace. We believe that the experiences we generate are able to activate our leadership as youth. We have been persistently taking our each step for the past 46 years, and we dare to strive for no matter what challenges we face in the future. Thank you for supporting us. Best regards, QVEN

What is the Member Committee? Member Committees (MC) is the management team that oversees and coordinates the operations of AIESEC across a given country or territory. Most countries/territories have multiple local committees, which necessitates a central body to coordinate. These committees also support the deliver of the more than 500 training and leadership development conferences that AIESEC runs every year. There are more than 1000 young people working full or part-time to help run member committees around the world across the 124 entities in AIESEC. In AIESEC Hong Kong, the Member Committee consists of recent graduates or students taking a gap year to work full time in AIESEC. They each are responsible for leading national strategies regarding their functional responsibility together with the Local Committees.

AIESEC’s product is the Leadership Development Experience where young people are able to go through challenges, acquire new skills and eventually be able to generate their personal value as an individual hence growing as a leader. The AIESEC Experience is broken down into 3 phases: 1. Engagement with AIESEC 2. Experiential Leadership Development 3. Life Long Connection

Engagement with AIESEC (EwA) is the first phase of an AIESEC Experience where one gets in touch with the organisation for their first time. It can be in a physical or virtual form of engagement such as Recruitment Talks, Social Media engagement, Mass Media appearance, Projects and Events etc. The Brand of the organisation is developed through this phase.

Experiential Leadership Development (ELD) is where the core leadership model of AIESEC takes place. The phase is broken down into 4 programmes: Team Member Programme, Team Leader Programme, Global Community Development Programme and the Global Internship Programme. More details of the Programmes can be found on the following 5 pages of this Annual Report.

Our alumni who were once an AIESEC leader will always be part of AIESEC in the Life Long Connection phase in the AIESEC Experience. We believe the leaders of AIESEC will become leaders of society and create positive changes and solve wide range of societal issues happening around the world.

10

Global Community Development Programme (GCDP) is a minimum 6 weeks international exchange experience where participants has the opportunity to work in local projects based on issues such as Health, Environmental Sustainability, Education etc. This year AIESEC in Hong Kong up scaled our GCDP intake up to 450 GCDP experiences this year, which is twice the number of last year.

In Session 2012-2013, we sent a total of 240 students from the 7 local chapters to a Global Community Development Programme experience. Popular destinations were Romania (36 Exchange Participants. EP in short form), Brazil (30 EPs), Poland (19 EPs), Mauritius (15 EPs), Hungary (14 EPs), Russia (13 EPs), Taiwan and Vietnam (11 EPs), Bahrain, Mainland of China, Egypt and Italy (10 EPs).

“It was really a memorable experience for me and I grew from different challenges as well. At first, teaching refugee children from Myanmar was no easy task because of the language barrier and culture shock. To communicate with them, I tried to learn some basic language in Malaysia and use a lot of body language. Their living condition and family background kind of shocked me as well. They live in Malaysia without protection from the government, and domestic violence happens as well. My greatest learning from this exchange experience was independence. Living far apart from the city center with limited public transport, everything is not as convenient as in Hong Kong. Language barrier was a problem as well. Before my exchange, I thought Malaysians could speak English and Chinese so there would not be a big problem. However, most bus drivers and shop assistants, even clinic nurses, can hardly communicate with us.

11

I was glad that I had the chance to share Hong Kong culture with the refugees and at the same time know more about their culture. The most impressive part of this internship experience was that they were trained by all interns to perform cultural elements of our own countries. I was really proud of them and I would treasure what we have in Hong Kong.” Joanne Wong, GCDP participant AIESEC in The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Global Internship Programme (GIP) is another global exchange programme we offer to young people across the world. Outgoing GIP provides its youth participants with professional working experience in various work fields such as Marketing, Management, Engineering, Education in an international environment. We believe professional experiences in the ‘real’ environment is the world our future societal leaders will nee to work in. By taking part in a long term GIP experience, the Exchange Participants will have a valuable professional working experience in partner companies overseas whom also believes in AIESEC’s vision and our impact. In Session 2012-2013, we sent out 70 students and recent graduates to a Global Internship Programme experience throughout the year. We are looking forward to sending out more students and recent graduates to a GIP experience in the coming session!

“Since I was a university student, I started thinking about a practical work experience and my plans ahead. I don’t want to simply find a job after graduation. I want to make a difference to my life. All I needed was an unique opportunity. Fortunately, I came across AIESEC, one of the world’s largest youth organizations. After one month working in my internship in SafeComs, I was quite confident that I had made a right decision. Now I am working in a company with people from eight countries. This international working environment and the high diversity in culture definitely intrigue me the most. As a marketing representative in my company, I learned the value of effective communication and negotiating skills. It is no doubt that this position is a positive step toward my long and fruitful career in the business community.

Besides valuable working experience, this opportunity through AIESEC also benefited me in many ways. I have visited cities liked Bangkok, Pattaya and Koh Samet. I live with AIESEC interns from different countries liked Poland, Kenya, America and Netherlands. They did not only help me to integrate myself into the Thai atmosphere, they also give me a sense of belonging. It definitely increased my cultural understanding and respect. With their encouragement, I successfully adapted and overcame many tough challenges. Now I have great confidence in myself and in the people around me. With a ton of options in the world to choose, I put my faith into AIESEC. Because what AIESEC gives me is more than a job. It gives me an opportunity to see and experience a way of life that I have never imagined before. This is what my dreams are being made.” Horus Chan, GIP participant AIESEC in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

12

AIESEC’s Global Exchange programmes are two way process: Outgoing and Incoming. In AIESEC Hong Kong, we partner with local companies as exchange partners and we bring in overseas AIESEC members as interns in their company The AIESEC interns are integrated into Hong Kong culture through events organised by the Local Committee on a monthly basis so that both the foreign interns and the local members are able to interact and learn about different cultures and customs.

“There are many decisions we do in our life. I am very confident that the one leading me to the experience I currently have as UBS AIESEC Global Coordinator in Hong Kong was one of the best ones I have made so far. I’ve managed recruitment process back to front for more than 50 positions in one year, had a chance to interact with managers of various departments and learn how the real banking business works. On top of that, I’ve made great friends, coming from AIESEC program or the business itself, had inspirational talks with our managing and executive directors and felt challenged and guided by my team mates. I’ve discovered one of the most vibrant cities in the world together with the surrounding beaches, hills and nature and truly have the experience of lifetime.” Sarka, GIP participant in UBS

13

“My AIESEC internship with Walmart has been an amazing experience. The work environment at Walmart is very nurturing. I have many opportunities to interact with worldclass managers and trainees from all around the world. Through this role, I have gained significant professional and personal growth. On top of this, Hong Kong’s trainee community is very multicultural and I truly enjoy life here in Hong Kong.” Sandra, GIP participant in Walmart

This session, AIESEC in Hong Kong created 126 GIP opportunities and successfully brought in 58 AIESEC interns into Hong Kong. Our National Exchange Partners are: - UBS - Pfizer - AEGON - InvestHK - Johnson & Johnson - Pricewater Coopers - Transtec Marketing - Warlmart

“My first taste of AIESEC HK came the international conferences that I have attended in the past. There I met many passionate and curious HK AIESECers who I would say are one of the most hard working and efficient members I’ve seen. Eager to learn, eager to meet people, and always concerned with the development of their entity. With such an impression of HK, I attended the national exchange preparation seminar run by the members of HK and found that what I understood of AIESEC HK members was not wrong. In fact, I was amazed at the level of completion and the amount of details that were put into the events at both national and local scale. Having had the chance to facilitate at Spring Conference, I witnessed the amount care that each facilitator and organising committee member had of the delivery of the experience. It was obvious that AIESEC HK was a very established entity with members holding high expectations of their work, and the time and effort that they put into AIESEC clearly reflected this. Through different levels of engagement with the members, as a group, people tend to be more timid and less engaging, but at an individual level each member was very curious about AIESEC and how it runs overseas, and much more expressive with their opinions and ideas. The latter was more true with those members that have had overseas AIESEC experiences. AIESEC HK is an entity of high capabilities and huge potentials to hold a more significant position within the Global network. I believe that will be possible with increased and diverse range of engagement between entities and also with other countries, strengthening the internal bond of the entity. Nevertheless, my experience has been nothing but positive and can say without regret that I am glad to be involved with AIESEC HK.” Shinji, GIP participant in UBS

AIESEC’s model of By-Youth-For-Youth is enabled through the Team Member and the Team Leader Programmes. In the 7 local entities, members and leaders are selected to run the daily operations in AIESEC from Exchange Management and Delivery, Sales, Communications, Talent Management, Finance etc.

Members and Leaders engage in frequent team meetings to discuss plans and project to keep the organisation running and continue to deliver powerful leadership experiences throughout the year. What these members and leaders get in return is not monetary reward but personal value generation, hard and soft skill development and growth in terms of our organisation’s Global Competency Model.

Team Member Programme (TMP) participants are allocated to small teams and led by a Team Leader Programme (TLP) participant.

AIESEC in Hong Kong will continue to recruit members and develop leaders to further grow the organisation.

My VPOGX experience was an once-in-a-lifetime experience not because of the quantitative result I have achieved, but because of the people I have developed. My priority throughout the year was to facilitate my members’ personal development as well as bringing more positive impact to the Exchange Participants; I always reminded myself that, people are the most important capital in this organization. I learned to deal with different kinds of people, manage an endless series of crisis, and more importantly, treasure the values in people.

“Looking back at my second year in AIESEC, I find that my experience is only getting more memorable and rewarding. Being an AIESECer in Hong Kong is not only about expanding your network to 7 universities, or befriending people from over 30 countries, it is about the opportunities for you to team up and work with these talented individuals. Experiencing the wide range of talent present in the AIESEC workplace has brought my adaptability to a whole new level; I’ve worked with both “newbies” or fresh AIESECers, where I learned how to coach and empower them to work and learn together, as well as senior AIESECers with 3-4 years’ experience, where every single meeting demonstrated efficiency and proficiency; their enthusiastic, creative and intelligent minds continue to amaze me even today.

This experience made me firmly believe in “leading by example.” I have to pay the same effort, or even additional amount of effort in order to motivate my members. It is 100% true that my members learn to think the way I do and have the similar working attitude as I do. Because of this, I always tell myself that I have to believe in the right things for the whole organization and portray the correct messages, even if the members do not accept them at the beginning. This leadership experience made me realize, being respected is more important than being loved by your members. Hanah Jang. Team Leader Programme participant in HKU

Being a team member has also allowed me to explore the diversity of AIESEC: from recruitment to partnership-building, from liaising with the media to facilitating conference sessions, every role imaginable can be found here in AIESEC, and the best part is that they are open to everyone. All in all, this year as a team member has allowed me to explore myself by immersing into a diverse set of roles and team environments – understanding more about my inner person and my future goals through a journey of self-discovery.” David Tche, Team Member Programme participant in HKUST

Developing Leaders Day in Spring Conference 2013 The final DLD of session 2012-2013 took place in Spring Conference 2013. As Spring Conference 2013 is the final national conference in the yearly cycle, the workshops were designed to prepare the incoming leaders to lead members and entities in the coming year as well as develop outgoing leaders to be able to become competitive in the external world. External Workshops This DLD consisted of 4 external workshops delivered by Barclays, IE Business School, Zenlinx and LIBBLER. AIESEC in Hong Kong will continue to engage our partners to events like these so that we can act as a platform where leaders in the real world can inspire the upcoming young leaders in Hong Kong.

Mr Lam joined our “Leaders to AIESEC Leaders Dialogue Series 2013”, where he shared with leaders of AIESEC in Hong Kong his professional insights on how Hong Kong youth could utilise the upcoming global opportunities and tackle future challenges of our society. An interview was conducted with Mr Lam on how he viewed leadership, youth development and what he thought about AIESEC members. Q: What are some important leadership qualities to you? A: First, you have to be curious about yourself and the world. You should try to think beyond what you are facing: how can you achieve sustainability? How can you have breakthroughs? And once you have these answers you should be persistent in pursuing your belief. Second, you should be able to communicate well. You have to speak the “human language” when you talk to your teammates. Putting yourself in your listeners’ shoes is fundamental – sometimes I even do it deliberately to create a friendly environment and allow myself to think from another perspective about the issue. Third, you have to appreciate diversity. You should think before you judge. Different cultures, practices or customs exist for a reason, and a good leader should never judge prematurely without understanding the importance of diversity. Q: So you mentioned the importance of diversity. Do you think it is better to be a generalist, or a professional?

Q: What do you think is the difference between AIESEC members and other university students? A: I think AIESEC provides an excellent platform for diversification, and the internationalism in AIESEC is a huge asset to youngsters. It is important to build a diverse network at youth – you will get more stubborn as you age, and it will not be as easy to build diversity into your social fabric or learn to be open to different cultures and abilities! I am impressed by how AIESEC members are so much more proactive than other local students I have met. I think learning to be proactive is even more important than getting your degree, because you risk foregoing many opportunities if you are not proactive enough when you step into society. Q: Do you have some leadership tips for us young leaders? A: My professor from Harvard taught me this: “the best way to convince someone to do what you want him to do is by telling him it is of his best interest to do it”. I have always remembered this one advice in the past thirty years. My one last advice is: make reading your habit. You learn when you read. And well, reading requires much self-discipline. So at the end of the day, you are not only accumulating knowledge, but also learning to manage yourself.

A: I see that many youngsters find themselves having too many habits and interests, which makes it hard for them to make the optimal, or the “best” choice at times like choosing a university degree or extra-curricular activities to join. I think there must of course be merits if you choose to focus on a fixed field, but you should also tap into more areas to see where your true potential lies. Even if you choose to be a professional, you have to be professional in a wide spectrum of disciplines. Q: What do you think should be the must-have experience in university for our future leaders? A: I think pursuing foreign exchange and internship has to be the most valuable one. To learn to live in a new environment is a test on your limits. You have to adjust to a new culture, a new environment, or even a new lifestyle. And as you do so, you grow. An overseas experience gives you an intensive learning opportunity which no youngster should miss.

Sustainable development is a type of development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, according to the United Nation. The concept of sustainability is not hard to understand or see among the society but it is often seen as a too broad topic that we do not know how to work about it. There is a saying that goes “everything means nothing”. Taking an easy example, we have known about global warming for at least 30 years but the idea of carbon footprint was only introduced and become popular in recent years. This example further illustrates that sustainability is not a technical or scientific study, it can be part of it to facilitate the whole movement. However, at the end, whether we care or not, it is the action of each of us that matters.

Carbon footprint is an easily understood concept that can be transformed into knowledge and social behavior, driving changes that create a better environment - something that the upcoming leaders must know. Thinking from the sustainable development perspective as an individual, everyone is involved in the process of observing, knowing what, understanding why, sharing, discussing and collaborating. This is the purpose of Youth Summit. AIESEC aims to take the responsibility in generating the platform for different parties to help young leaders experience the full process so that we can co-create the sustainable development of our future society.

18

Youth Summit opens to youth including secondary, international and local university students. We have engaged more than 300 youngsters this year who aimed to contribute to sustainable development. This year, the conference was divided into 3 tracks: Environment, Education and Corporate Social Responsibility. It is our honor to have more than 30 different partners and supporters from the government, business sector, non profit organizations, interest groups, schools and councils to join us. Through the training delivered by our distinguish guests, interactions with the international students and studies on the different projects, young leaders had an opportunity to reflect on their role in the sustainable development of Hong Kong.

17

AIESEC is a non-political and not-for-profit organization. We aim to develop leadership through the experience we provide. We see every party in the community a crucial part in driving the society. Young leaders can always provide innovative solutions that lead to a better future. However, we need to be purpose-driven and understand the society well so that we can maximize our impact, and Youth Summit is where the two meets. We are going to keep Youth Summit as a yearly tradition not simply for the organization but the society as a whole. Youth Summit itself is a concept of sustainability and we invite you to join us in 2014.

The development of smart phones and social media changed our social behavior. For AIESEC to be able to engage and develop every young people in the world, the online platform will be the key in making this possible. This session, AIESEC in Hong Kong redesigned many online platforms such as our National Website (www.aiesec.hk) and our National Facebook Page.

“What is AIESEC?” - Our desired answer is “AIESEC is the Global Youth Network impacting the world through Leadership Development Experiences”. This year AIESEC in Hong Kong conducted a large scale Brand Audit to collect the public’s opinion on what they think about our organisation and their views towards HK society. We collected over 1900 responses where the majority of the responses came from local university students. Statistics showed that Cultural Diversity, Education and Corporate Social Responsibility are the key issues students are interested in. In terms of the Brand of AIESEC, over two-thirds of the respondent associated the word “Diverse” with AIESEC. But not many chose the word “Impactful” and “Inclusive”.

18

The National Trainers Team of AIESEC in Hong Kong was successfully re-established in 2012 with the purpose of supporting the learning and development of leadership. In Session 2012-2013, it focused on coaching for LC learning, building trainers’ pipeline through Train the Trainers Seminars, and providing support and consultation for national conferences’ facilitators.

Achievement Highlights National Train the Trainers Seminars Net Promoter Score: 83 Extracted general comments from TtT graduates: “It was one of my greatest learning experiences in AIESEC which I can apply not only to AIESEC events but externally as well. Also some of the models and methods, tips and tricks we learned and were trained on were very insightful, unique and extremely useful as leaders.” “I think TtT really gave me a fresh new experience in my AIESEC journey. I learnt many session facilitation skills. But what made it stands out is the philosophy behind. If you want to make an impact to others, understand them by heart first.” “TtT is a truely ‘learning by doing’ seminar that everyone should join. Throughout systematic sessions and trainings offered by NTT, delegates can learn the ways behind and practice immediately. Interactive feedbacks can bring out the highest value of this seminar so that delegates can keep on improving and deliver a high quality session.”

19

“What exactly is AIESEC’s Global Community Development Programme?” AIESEC’s exchange programmes will open participants up an opportunity to go to one of the 113 AIESEC entities across the globe. But out of the 113 entities, which ones are the most attractive and relevant for Hong Kong youth’s interest? To enhance AIESEC’s relevancy in Hong Kong, this year AIESEC in Hong Kong created a customized Global Community Development Programme (GCDP) called “CSR Abroad” to meet the needs of society. “CSR Abroad” is a GCDP Experience where participants goes through a volunteering experience in one of the 8 countries (Brazil, Russia, India, Mainland of China, Indonesia, Mexico, South Korea or Turkey) in the fields of Education or Green Sustainability. Participants will then create a CSR plan based on their exchange experience abroad and how the practices and ideas from another country can be implemented in Hong Kong. Our partners, MTR and PwC will be taking part in the CSR dinner in September where the exchange participants will present their ideas and experiences to the companies. In order for this programme to happen we put extra emphasis on cross entity cooperation to ensure the exchange experiences are able to provide insights and ideas about CSR. This summer, over 20 students from Hong Kong Baptist University, City University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Lingnan University will begin their exchange experience in one of the eight country.

“Discover 2012” is the first national conference of Session 2012-2013 where majority of the delegation were new members who joined in October. The conference took place on November at HKUST and HKBU. As the name suggests, the conference aimed to let delegate Discover themselves, society and AIESEC. Discover Themselves Every leadership journey involves the need of understanding themselves. Sessions were delivered to enable delegates to reflect on what shaped them as an individual and where they want to head towards in the future.

Winter National Conference is the second conference of AIESEC in Hong Kong every year and is also the one with longest history developed since its establishment in 1988. AIESEC is about leadership development and this conference focuses on how our daily experiences can help to develop world leaders. WNC this year is themed “Workshop of Dream”, symbolizing how AIESEC works with its best effort as a backstage to ensure each individual’s life is well performed.

21

In this year’s WNC, we are glad to have 4 talented and committed individuals to step out to be the President of AIESEC in Hong Kong. Different format of interactions were carried out between the candidates and the delegates, covering a lot social issues including a fruitful discussion on the perceived role of the young generation. Nevertheless, we were lucky to have our learning partners and external supporters to deliver the leadership training sessions for us to equip ourselves, along with discussions on ways to effectively enhance the management and operation of this organization. Last but not least, our “critical friends” - the supervisory group of AIESEC Hong Kong was also with us to share our mid year achievement. They have provided a lot of valuable insights from the great experiences they encountered in the field.

Discover the Society A leader must understand what is the current reality the society is facing. Discover 2012 had a one day Developing Leaders Day (page ***) to bring external perspectives into discussions and workshops. We had companies such as UBS AG, Zenlinx, Team Building Asia running sessions in the conference. Discover AIESEC What is AIESEC’s role in today’s society? How does AIESEC develop the future leaders of society? As members of AIESEC, delegates went through sessions to understand more about this organisation called AIESEC where they will be working to deliver more and better leadership experiences to young people in Hong Kong.

Enhancing societal recognition is one of the focus of AIESEC this year. We believe that recognition comes from strong positive relevancy. In this year’s WNC, we have surveyed a group of young adults regarding their expectations toward the future of Hong Kong, and the results were broadly published by different media. Also, we have co-operated with Pernod Ricard in running a CSR campaign on responsible drinking. Three creative proposals were selected with well thought recommendations on driving positive social behaviors. All 200 delegates of WNC celebrated these outstanding solutions in the prize giving ceremony held during the conference, highlighting that every AIESEC member is devoted to serve our society in every aspect.

Spring Conference is the second conference of AIESEC in Hong Kong every year - a conference of “transition”. The upcoming leaders of the organization are required to join the conference for different kinds of transition including knowledge, skills, trends and the upcoming development plan of the organization. At the same time, it will be the last conference for most of the current leaders to share what they have experienced in AIESEC as well as how to bring it forward to their career ahead and contribute to the society. This particular conference also marked as a turning point for most AIESEC members as they embark to their different stages of AIESEC journey, or life. Sustainability is always a topic that AIESEC is interested in. We have been learning and working on CSR since the 80’s. People may question that the 1-year term of AIESEC is an act against sustainability. However, it is the essence of this organization. It enhances the dynamic, new perspectives and more importantly, showcasing the impacts of the organization. It is just like any other school out there, a 1-year term leadership. You are always encouraged to promote to a higher year if you want to, and more than welcomed to bring along what you have learnt and continue practising them in your life. We aim to be the cradle of the future pioneer of the Hong Kong society. Sustainability is always a topic that AIESEC is interested in. We have been learning and working on CSR since the 80’s. Internship exchange has been a core program for AIESEC in promoting global mindset and student development. Throughout the past 45 years, AIESEC Hong Kong has been developing the Global Talent Program in bringing international candidates to Hong Kong for local working experience. In the past year, we have brought over 60 interns to Hong Kong for local working experience. In order to enhance the culture exchange and to bring forward local culture whilst promoting globalization into local community, integrating interns are an inevitable process.

This year we have further sustained the initiative of “International Saturday”. This is an initiative in bringing local AIESEC members and interns for local events and further integrates them to share their own cultures on Saturdays. In this year, we have organized over 7 International Saturday engaging more than 40 interns, from 25 different countries, and 300 local members.

All International Saturday has been organized by our local entities, with promotion in our internal channels to ensure the interns and local members will be engaged and share their culture on the same platform. Other than the traditional local event trips, including BBQ, boat trips, we have been engaging various associations in promoting specific countries’ culture (Italian and French culture) to our engaged members and interns. This has brought greater ownership of our interns from specific cultures, in the meantime it has successfully attracted more members joining the International Saturday.

This year was the 43rd year of AIESEC-LC-CUHK. It was marked with fruitful experiences and achievements, AIESEC in CUHK took another leap forward in Session 20122013. The entity this year consisted of 81 members and 28 leaders, including an Executive Board team of 8 – all working towards our vision this year, “To continuously develop influential change agents with global mindset in CUHK”. We were grateful to have constant support from our advisors this year – Dr. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Mr. Raymond Leung, Director of Student Affairs at CUHK; Mr. Richard Tsang, Founder and Chairman of Strategic Public Relations Group; and Mr. Tom Fong, Director of Student Affairs at HKIEd. We provided 21 CUHK students with Community Development Exchange experiences and 3 students with Internship Exchange experiences overseas. Amine Yau was one of the participants of the Community Development Exchange, during which she worked in Ghana on an HIV/AIDS educational project for students. She describes how the experience allowed her to make an impact to the lives of people there, recalling that the students remembered the knowledge they were taught. Joey Shiu, who went on an education Internship Exchange to Czech Republic says, “I experienced the local culture and they showed the typical way of living in Czech! We chatted a lot and had lots of fun!” We are proud to have provided such life-changing experiences to students. We believe that such experiences are essential to the development of a global mindset and to see the world through different perspectives.

This year, AIESEC in CUHK focused on racial and gender equality as the themes of the experiences provided to young people. The ‘Fellowship in a Racially Diversified Society’ (FRDS) project, supported by Crossroads Foundation and UNESCO HK Association, was initiated. The year-long project paired up 20 secondary school students of ethnic minorities with 17 students of CUHK in hopes of expanding our impact on young people; the buddies participated in and co-organized events throughout the year. A CUHK participant, Kathy, shares that the project allowed her to understand that ethnic minorities indeed fit into their Hong Kong lives very well. Another participant, Emily, was fascinated to learn that her buddy had a great sense of belonging in Hong Kong. Diza and Christian, both Filipino secondary school students, enjoyed learning about university life from their buddies and shared about how the project helped them open up. “Friendship is the strongest foundation for cultural understanding and peace, which is essential in today’s world”, says Srushti, an Executive Board member, who is an Indian brought up in Hong Kong, “This project has a unique vision that perfectly suits a melting pot like Hong Kong.” Gender equality was highlighted through the ‘Leaders Going Beyond Tradition’ forum held in April. We were honoured to have renowned guests discuss the issues related to the LGBT community and offer their perspectives as the leaders from various fields of the society. Among the guests were Dr. York Chow; Ms. Cyd Ho Sau-Lan, member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong and founding member of the Labour Party; and Ms. Gigi Chao, Executive Director of Cheuk Nang (Holdings) Limited. An audience of over 200 watched the event that attracted attention from a variety of mainstream media. The event gave participants food for thought about the opinions on the issue from the leading figures of the society. President of AIESEC in CUHK, Cherry Yuen, emphasizes that AIESEC develops youth leadership through real-life experiences. Executive Board member, Jason Kwan, adds “In AIESEC, I learnt to step out of my comfort zone and face my weaknesses. I trust my leadership more now, and am determined to do something for the society through my ambitions!” Our work this year has given developmental experiences to many young people. AIESEC in CUHK wholeheartedly worked towards its ambitions and will continue to strive for ‘Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential’.

2012 – 2013 is a remarkable session for AIESEC-LC-HKBU. Throughout the year, we strive hard to increase our campus exposure in Hong Kong Baptist University, which brings an increase in number of schoolmates participating in our leadership development programmes. With an expansion of our exchange departments, more students enjoy the taste of working aboard. 41 of us gain an international community development experience in 23 different countries of the world, whole 3 of us participate in a global internship opportunities. Such international experiences are valuable to us. As Kelvin Pang, one of our global internship experience participant shares: “If you are going to work in Hong Kong for the rest of your life, then why don’t you give yourself a chance to explore and experience the another part of the world for a year? People grow with responsibility and the best timing of spending this year must then be the time that you have nothing to lose.” Apart from going on exchanges, different kinds of local experiences are well enjoyed by our members. Being a leader in AIESEC may be the most challenging yet life-changing experience in this organization. In session 2012-2013, more members are provided with opportunities as team leaders, conference and event organizers.

“Taking a leadership role is a journey of self-discovery, including your weaknesses and strengths,” says hazel Wong, our Executive Board member. “You will discover the hidden power and talent that you actually have,” as also mentioned by Maggie Yeung, our senior member and conference organizer. Besides, almost every member of AIESEC-LC-HKBU has been to at least one national and international conference. From those conferences, we see the power and network of AIESEC which draws all passionate youngsters together. “Every delegate had a really big dream and passion to make a change on himself and the society!” Described by Brian Chan, delegate of an international conference held in Mongolia. Last but not least, our members understand themselves much better after a year in this organization. Through organizing both public and internal events, as well as participating in trainings and workshops, members are equipped with practical skills that cannot be learnt from books.

Process Optimization for Experience Delivery In this session, there has been redesign and diversification of the job description of the supporting departments, namely Information Management and Finance Departments. In both departments, Dual Role Buddy Scheme was carried out to maximize the impact of supporting roles to the core businesses. Information Management Department built up a tailor-made recruitment system for each programme as well as talent tracking and appraisal system. Local Committee Internal Wiki was created for the long-term knowledge management for consolidation and research and future development. Finance Department set up new account receivables framework and claiming and advancement system. More importantly, it was entitled to generate revenue by applying to various funding. Organizational Citizenship for Sustainability Firstly, Local Committee motto and logo were established at the beginning of the session for the image rebranding of the Local Committee. Encapsulation of the qualities and spirit of the Local Committee increased members’ sense of belonging. Moreover, Reward & Recognition System was redesigned; this monthly recognition included Best Department, Best Team Member, Best Team Leader, and Exchange Development Awards. By creating a positive image of the Leadership Team, there were a high number of applications in the following fast-track manager and Ripples Organizing Committee Recruitment. Improve Exchange Experience Delivery. For Outgoing Exchange, there was more than 140% growth in number of experiences delivered, providing more opportunities for HKU students to go abroad and create positive impacts. Throughout the session, there was a regular exposure to exchange stories via social media to reach out to more potential customers. Various information workshops and events were organized to continuously engage the Exchange Participants and set a correct expectation. There has also been engagement of external organization to deliver sessions on global mindset and facilitation skills, better equipping Exchange Participants before their exchange journey. “One of the most challenging experiences was when I was the account manager of a language centre. They hoped to hire international interns through us, and when some candidates turned down the offer and I had to organize interviews again and again. Surprisingly, the company didn’t complaint at all; on the contrary, they showed appreciation toward my job performance.” - Enoch Lau, Incoming Exchange Vice President-elect of AIESEC in HKU 1314

Team Member Programme Innovation and Enhancement A short-term Team Leader Programme was initiated by offering a taste of leadership in members’ first-year AIESEC experience. Project leaders had great ownership of the projects as they had the chance to generate their own ideas and plan to contribute to the growth of the whole Local Committee, resulting in high motivation when leading and delivering the projects. Another new initiative was the formation of learning partnership with Intercultural Education (ICE) to build extra training capacity. Various training workshops were delivered to strengthen members’ global mindset and entrepreneurial outlook. Strategic Online Engagement Much focus was put on the online engagement of the stakeholders and potential customers for the real-time showcasing of the achievements and ongoing events. For example, members and leaders’ participation and stories in AIESEC events, conferences, and intern reception were highlighted. As a result, Facebook page has achieved 167% growth in the number of likes compared to last session. A week-long online branding campaign “Fresh: Out Facebook Showroom” was done to consolidate the achievements in this session. At the same time, Local Committee website was reformatted to deliver better user experience. Organization Reputation Building At the beginning of the session, Recruitment Campaign named “Taste of AIESEC” was done to showcase AIESEC culture and attract potential members. Throughout the session, large-scale on-campus events such as Hong Kong Cultural Night, Global Village, and Issue Week were organized to continuously present AIESEC as a truly international organization and raise awareness of global issues among HKU students. For example, Global Village itself attracted approximately 1000 participants on that day. Furthermore, Ripples International Conference 2013 was held to engage non-AIESECers and provide them with microexperience of life of an AIESECer In the meanwhile, associate membership “Friends of AIESEC” was initiated to deal with the birth of detractors and enlarge our reach in the campus. These students kept a close connection with AIESEC HKU with the regular updates of our latest events and information. “Be curious about everything and appreciate the world or problems around you. As you are an AIESEC-er, I believe you are more curious about the social issues than other peers of similar ages.”- Ms. Ada Wong, JP, Convenor, Make A Difference (MaD) at Ripples External Forum 2013

We believe AIESEC Hong Kong works as a whole and through mutual support, AIESEC Hong Kong can attain sustainable growth. This year, our contribution to National conferences OCs and Facilitators is well-recognizable – with various National Projects’ Facilitator, Organizing Committee and Agenda Manager. On sustainability level, Ken Wong (President in AIESECLC-HKUST Session 2011-2012) took up the Presidency of AIESEC Hong Kong Limited in contributing his leadership capacity and uniting the organization. Providing Quality Experience The talent development carried out by different functional management teams are more focused on the quality control. For example, the LC mass meetings and exchange management process (both incoming and outgoing) are more closely monitored to guarantee the learning in membership level. Followings are the participant feedback towards their unique experience under AIESEC in HKUST

Sharing from Gabrielle Cheukwing Au, Global Community Development Program Participant “Going on GCDP is the best part of my life ever. It doesn’t just mean to go on travel alone, to know people all over the world, to get close with people that you have never seen and then to do random crazy things with them. It is not just like that”

Sharing from Ivan Liu, Team Member Program Participant “There are so many things in this wonderful place that I have taken way, far more than what I have expected. I believe the greatest asset of all is the people here. I’m so happy to get to know all of you here and we share similar values, dreams and goals in life.”

Campus Branding The AIESEC week is a key highlight of AIESEC-LC-HKUST this year, which is an important initiative in bringing students in HKUST together with AIESEC, assuring the importance of AIESEC in HKUST’s presence. AIESEC Week The week was kicked off with the “Share Your Dream” Campaign, which was followed Dream Symposium, Let’s Talk Water, Before I Die, I want to…, and J.U.S.T. Talk. We invited various guest speakers from different fields to speak within our theme – Dream. The last concluding event, Global Village, was co-organized with the International Students Association, and was a great success among students.

It is an intensive and full-of-learning year for our local committee. The members’ development boosted lots due to the challenges we faced. Yet with the team spirit of ceaselessly pursuing for betterment, we experienced steady growth in all four of our leadership development programmes compared with last year. We provided over 30 team member experience, 20 leader experience as well as around 10 incoming and outgoing exchange experiences. Members’ development is always on top of our priority. This year, our members acted out the one of the AIESEC values of ‘activating leadership” through pursuing demanding and comprehensive leadership opportunities. By engaging alumni for sharing past experiences and their practical skills, our members gained many insightful and savvy ideas from them. Their personal experiences have largely contributed and enriched the AIESEC journey of us. From the alumni sharing, we are looking forward to seeing that our members will engage in the lifelong phrase as the alumni to contribute back to the global family of AIESEC. “Before I joined AIESEC, I did not believe that I had the ability of being a leader and always tried to stay in my comfort zone. I’ve got to say AIESEC does shape my mindset in a very stimulating approach to activate my potentials. Indeed jumping from a newbie to Local Committee President is an extremely intensive process, all of my mindset, attitude, and skills have been re-shaping and transforming throughout these few months. Despite of the hardness, I do enjoy the process of learning new things and taking up enormous challenges every day. I love the feeling of challenging myself.” - Theodora Yan

Apart from this, bringing internationalism to campus and fellow Lingnanians is also our mission as well. This year, we sent students mainly to Africa to explore the world as well as themselves by joining global community development program. Our member, Gisele is now having her internship in Kenya to educate the primary school students there. She found that education does not bound by language; education goes beyond the boundaries as long as you are genuine. Here is her comment after her first lesson to the students: “They are so happy with the new visitor (me) of their class, they smile at me, they cover their faces with their hands when they are shy, they hug me, they poke me, they pull my hands, they keep putting up their hands and ask me questions..... After lunch break, when I was back to the class, they suddenly all stood up and sang this song to me. I was so shocked!”

Being one of the best local committees in AIESEC Hong Kong, AIESEC PolyU has been striving our very best to activate leadership - one of the core values of AIESEC, since 2005. This year, we envision to enlighten leaders through providing a more internationalised environment including exchange, projects and conferences, by which more and more students can be involved in contributing a part of impact to the society. Ensure a Quality Experience Members are the ‘assets’ of the organisation. Without their contribution, a strong caring culture could not be constituted. We had successfully realised 91 members and 34 leaders. Leadership is always empowered through participating in different development opportunities particularly conferences. For this term, we got 72 participants in national conferences and 54 in international conferences in Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Finland. Internationalisation is believed to be one of the key elements of leadership empowerment. Apart from above mentioned, we had also put a lot of effort in maximizing the realisations of outgoing exchange programmes as well as the diversity of the destinations, especially Middle East and North Africa so that they can be more exposed in different circumstances and bring their learning back to AIESEC PolyU. For Global Internship Programmes, we sustain the good relationship with school and forged partnership with the Jockey Club Design Institute of Social Innovation as well as the PolyU School of Design in welcoming more international talents to enhance the diversity of ideas. The new initiative of organising the first Hong Kong’s incoming exchange programme - NAKUPENDA was also one of the focus areas for the term to drive the impact on local community, secondary school students and AIESEC members.

“I noticed that strong will, optimistism and decisiveness are essential to deal with unexpected challenges at all time I got to try my best to make the most appropriate decisions.” By Vicky Choi , The Organising Committee Vice President of Project Management “In Malaysia conference, I was inspired by team building tasks, especially falling from height and covering eyes and moving just depend on the leader’s guide. This lesson made today’s me who is challenging own life to bring impact to others.” By YeongEun Seo, Outgoing Exchange Team Officer

This year was a fruitful year for AIESEC CityU. We experienced substantial growth in all four of our leadership development programmes. We provided 63 team member experience, 23 leader experience, 24 community development opportunities and 1 global internship position. The numbers are rising as we speak. Here are some slides of our efforts and results. This year we sent 6 members to attend foreign international conferences, where new ideas are catalyzed through fierce discussions and engaging activities. By immersing our members in an international, fast-paced environment with some of the most active and visible student leaders and corporate leaders, our delegates surely have a new understanding of the phrase “mankind’s potential”. We also invite external guest with working experience to teach practice skills which our members could immediate utilize to boost their competiveness. The content of our training included but were not limited to graphic designs and quantitative analysis. These hard skills will help them make well-communicated messages and well-considered decisions in years to come, after they graduate from AIESEC and become leaders of their own communities. Among all experience our members could get, our national conferences would be one of the most colorful and massive in scale. Here is an experience sharing by Stephen Leung, one of our delegates in Winter National Conference 2013 held in Hong Kong: “I’ve never expected how diverse AIESEC network could be! I met a member from China Communist Party who arouses a great sense of curiosity on me. Together with delegates from other universities. We discussed some current social issues such as Anchor babies to education and cultural difference between Hong Kong and Mainland China. We even candidly spilled our own thoughts and debated a little! It was such a great experience!”

31

Last but not least, our community programme provides in-depth culture immersion which never ceases to amaze our participants. Vinnci is one of our participants joining a community development project in Argentina. She is responsible for educating local college students about global awareness and her own culture. Apparently the education is mutual: “This is the first time I experienced in first-person that English is not a universal language, at least not in Argentina. Everybody here speaks Spanish. Even if I could speak English like a native, there were times that I couldn’t understand what people are saying! Here, Chinese language is regarded as something as difficult as calculus and they wonder how could mere human memorize such vast number of characters. By the way, they really master the art of enjoying life to the fullest.”

Customer Experience Management With the growing focus in delivering Quality Experience globally in AIESEC, AIESEC International (the Global management body of AIESEC) created an online Customer Experience Management system on an online platform called ‘Customer Gauge’.

By the year 2015 AIESEC is aiming to deliver over 600,000 unique experiences to youth around the world. In order for the organisation to facilitate this growth, a powerful Information System is required to manage the large number of information in the coming sessions. In session 2012-2013, various information system was explored to improve our process efficiency in our daily operations.

Customer Gauge provides detailed analysis and statistic based on the Net Promoter Score of different Experiential Leadership Development programmes (the Team Member, Team Leader, Global Community Development and Global Internship Programme). Now we are dealing with over 150,000+ leadership experiences globally and AIESEC Hong Kong is responsible in delivering over 1000 of those experiences. In order to create powerful leadership experiences, we began to use Customer Gauge to analyze if our current process and structure is able to create the ideal leadership experiences we are looking for. AIESEC Hong Kong will continue to use the online system to analyze and develop our programmes so that we can bring the entity one step closer to the organisation’s vision.

Process Optimisation Creating a system that can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our operation is one way to create the best leadership development platform for our members. This session, AIESEC Hong Kong leveraged an existing online platform called PODIO to improve our exchange process and event management procedures. PODIO is an online social work platform where users can create their own customized applications to manage operations such as Sales management, Conference/Event management and Exchange Process automatization. “PODIO allowed us to create an interactive working platform for my team. In the past I used facebook as a way to communicate with my members but PODIO enabled a new way to work and collaborate with my team virtually without the use of facebook. This was a big first-step in achieving work-life balance on the online platform.” Ryo ENDA, Member Committee Vice President of Branding, Communications and Information Management

This year in AIESEC Hong Kong, we engaged alumni whom were past leaders of this organisation as National Partners. We invited Beatrice Wong (Member Committee President Session 2007-2008) and Debby Shing (Member Committee Vice President Session 2009-2010) to share their experience as an alumni and partners this year.

“In 2004, I joined AIESEC and was amazed by its vision –develop change agents to bring positive impact to society. Looking back on the experiences I’ve gained in the past 8 years – as a leader in Local Committee, as the President of AIESEC in HK, as an AIESEC intern and AIESEC alumni, I am very thankful for how this organization nurtured me to be who I am today. I learned my leadership experience in various team experience and professional advice through the AIESEC network. I gained my overseas working experiences through AIESEC, which gave me a very special career story to share with others. Most importantly, it helped me to find my passion and led me to a very fulfilling and rewarding career path - Developing others through training & coaching. I wish more young people can experience what I experienced, therefore when I saw the possible synergy between Zenlinx & AIESEC, I was more than happy to link them up, and hope to keep contributing this organization in a different way. I had my time to learn and contribute in AIESEC, and I am even more excited to support AIESEC to create more amazing journeys for young people. It has been a great pleasure to work with AIESEC again, keep up the great work!”

When I was a member in AIESEC, I’ve never thought that I’d become a National Partner of AIESEC Hong Kong now. Joining AIESEC in 2006 is definitely a milestone that shapes my life choices. Not only the leadership and team experience, global exposure, great friendships and networks I have gained throughout my five years of AIESEC journey; the inspiration, motivation, core values, and desire for positive impact are deeply built inside me. On my first trip with AIESEC in 2007, I went to India for APXLDS (Regional Conference) with a group of 30 delegates from AIESEC Hong Kong, and met over 200 delegates from across 21 countries in Asia Pacific. One must never underestimate the impact of an AIESEC international conference. It was the first time I deeply experienced and exposed to social issues, different cultures and countries realities. There was also where I met my friend who cofounded Social Alliance Communications Consultancy with me five years later in 2011. In short, Social Alliance is an impact-marketing consultancy and communications platform that aims to amplify social impact and enhance sustainable social business model for organizations. We are determined to make positive impact in the society by being the ‘alliance’ to social enterprises, NGOs and CSR projects in the community. Being an entrepreneur is never easy. Thanks to the intensive training and experience as a Member Committee Vice-President in AIESEC Hong Kong back then, in which it enables and empowers me to managing all levels of matters in a social business: from strategic planning to driving business development and sales, to ensuring operations delivery standards, to day-to-day routine, legal, finance and basically, everything. The collaboration as a National Partner with AIESEC Hong Kong is simply a perfect match. Not only we are contributing our expertise in driving publicity and exposure for AIESEC Hong Kong through training, workshops and coaching sessions, but also enables us to connect again with AIESEC, just like an old Chinese say ‘when one drinks water, one must not forget where it comes from’. Looking forward, we aspire to continue and expand the partnership with AIESEC Hong Kong, to further contribute, engage AIESEC members, and make social impact to our city.
