The ripple is a floating multifunctional piazza that adds a new landmark that celebrates the Drava river and the beautiful city of Maribor. The ripple is designed with the rich festival culture of Maribor in mind offering a floating multifunctional piazza that adds a new landmark that celebrates the Drava river and the beautiful city of Maribor. Being that the brief specifies a square footprint the four triangles leftover from the amphitheatre circular shape are then filled with a lightweight planter mainly made from potted plants to create 4 mini gardens on each corner of the specified footprint.

For the floating system we chose what we believed to be the most flexible and easy to install/uninstall floating system, which is ‘the rolling barge’ modular system, that us formed from a combination of an easy to assemble steel frame and large empty plastic barrels. The rest of the construction is a simple timber structure with certain elements that are coloured in reference the terracotta pitched roofs that give Maribor its iconic look. Our proposal also allows for both open air & sheltered usage by providing vertical rods on either side of the pavilion that can host tensile shader that could be stored, along with the foldable access bridge within the ample storage space within the seating areas. The versatile nature of the chosen floating system allows for easily moving the ripple to different positions on the river, and the proposed cross-chain anchoring system allows for easily docking it at various locations on the riverbank. The open shape of the pavilion allows for great visibility from the riverbank, when being used as a stage during the lent festival, while also allowing for more intimate performances & experiences during the rest of its usage.
