| SITE ANALYSIS
After studying the site and its surrounding context, as seen in the diagram to the left, the following constraints have been discerned: 1. There is a 9m and a 3m no build zones on the South-Western and North-Eastern edges of the site respectively. 2. Vehicular access to the site from the South-West is restricted, thus making the North-East the only means for vehicular access.
4.
4. Pedestrian access to the site is through the North East, SouthEast, and South-West edges of the site, as a result this is where the entrances to the building will be located. 5. The best views towards the sea and the golf course are to the South, so any facade openings should be facing that direction.

| CONCEPT & MASSING
1. The volume created from the total area of the brief is split in half to create a central atrium that opens up to the exterior creating a continuous flow between inside and outside on the ground floor.
5. The highlighted areas of the floor-plates are cut out to create smaller internal atrium overlooking the green spaces in the Library floors.
A contemporary emulation of a traditional Hanok surrounded by the captivating natural landscape of the countryside is the picture that the design strives for.
2. Then two volumes are carved from the Northern and Southern façades on the ground floor in order to house social functions that require outdoor space usage, namely the Cafe and the Gallery.
6. The internal garden spaces are placed on the South facing façades to receive the most amount of sunlight.
3. The external façades of the Library functions are opened up to the exterior through the use of glazing, while the private Cultural and Administrative functions on the ground floor remain closed off with solid façades.
7. A second skin of perforated metal is overlayed unto the facade to shield the internal spaces from direct sunlight.
The goal of the design is to create a uniquely Korean contemporary building, that celebrates local vernacular architecture while using the most cutting edge of modern-day building technology and materials. A showcase of Korea’s rich past and prosperous present hand-in-hand, a dialogue between the old and the new.
4. The 2nd floor is rotated 90 degrees to improve its natural lighting from the atrium.
8. The second skin is cut-out in the location of the internal green courtyards to allow for better sunlight penetration and views to the outside.

| LANDSCAPE The project’s landscape design takes inspiration from traditional Korean gardens and their design language, by using modern interpretations of the following mains elements: 1. Grass and moss mounds 2. Pebbled walkways 3. Stone formations 4. Reflecting pools The aim of the landscape is to reference the picturesque Korean countryside with its cascading green hills and scenic rocky ravines.

The book stacks encourage people to move around, following the gentle curves of ‘‘the Maze’’ just like the water currents. The center bookshelves twists and turns to create amphitheater seating, reading nooks, a multimedia room and quiet spots. The metal perforated skin of the building and concrete cores are counterbalanced by the soft and warm appearance of the wood and interior gardens.

| FACADE DETAILING
The building’s shell is designed as a double skin façade, in which The fluted perforated metal skin of the building allows passers-by to get a glimpse of the movements of people in the world of books, and yet provide a private oasis for the library visitors sheltering them from the sounds of the city and filtering the light through the perforations to create a glowing gem-like beacon within the city’s skyline. The double skin creates a buffer zone between the serenity of the building and the relentless rush of modern day life. As illustrated above, the scheme’s design language is derived from the contemporary interpretation of the architectural vocabulary of traditional Korean architecture.

The tertiary structure is formed of a steel cage structure that will be bolted onto the secondary structure in order to host the prefabricated metal skin facade.
The secondary structure is a prefabricated self-supporting steel structure to be hosted on the primary structure in order to carry the tertiary structure
The render above showcases the relationship between the primary, secondary and tertiary structures, and how the combine to host the prefabricated metal skin facade.
The building envelope is mostly prefabricated glazing panels which will be installed on site.
For the primary structure the scheme calls for a steel structure with concrete slabs which will be poured on-site.
The render above showcases the wall build-up of the ground floor external walls, particularly how the prefabricated fluted concrete panels are hosted onto the blockwork walls.

| SUSTAINABILITY
In order to offset the carbon footprint of the construction about 6000sqm
of greenery is planted in both the exterior and interior of the building, which amounts to 65% of the total site area. In addition to 500sqm of water fountains and reflection pools, which amounts to 5% of the total site area. Thus in total our scheme gives back 70% of the site’s area to nature.
Solar panels are mounted on top of the core to provide enough power to heat the water for the toilets, thus decreasing energy usage.
26.
Atrium skylight allows for sunlight penetration into the building to provide adequate daylight into the library spaces, while also playing a part in the cross-ventilation of the building by allowing hot air to escape.
Openable curtain wall panels allow for natural air flow into the building, while the metal brise-soliel provides indirect sunlight in the summer, while also heating the trapped air within the facade in the winter.
Rain water is collected in underground gutters covered by the pebbles in order to be used to water the plants and in the fountains.
