Intro

SUMMER COPY DATE FRIDAY 28th AUGUST

Hello and welcome to another edition of S41 Local Magazine. By the time we slide through your letterbox the remaining local businesses that are yet to open will be in full swing, welcoming you with warm smiles (under the masks) as you walk through their doors, extremely grateful for your custom. This August it’s never been easier to support our local eateries with the arrival of the ‘dine out to help’ scheme. Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the whole of August you can eat at one of our fantastic local, independent cafes, pubs and restaurants and the government will chip in the first £10 per person towards the bill! In light of this delicious scheme we have some great foody articles in this month’s edition of S41. We recently paid a visit to the Vintage Tearooms for a cuppa and a slice of cake fit for the Queen. Our two-year-old Florie loved her little tea party and so did donkey, her best friend and cuddly toy. We highly recommend you paying them a visit soon. We welcome a new writer aboard the S41 crew this month, the lovely Molly Scott. Molly is a food blogger and has written a piece for us titled ‘5 great foods to eat in Chesterfield’. I bet you can guess what it’s about? As a family we have been trying our best to support as many of our local businesses as possible (in a safe and responsible manner). We took the kids and grandparents to U-Paint it Pots on Chatsworth Road to decorate our own ceramics and had a great time. Grandad Dave has a particularly good gnome collection in his back garden so was very excited when he got to paint his own! Fun for all for the family. We have so many new advertisers this month we almost don't recognise our own magazine. This is really encouraging for not only our humble publication, but for all our local businesses and economy. We implore you this summer to shop local, shop independent and remember: if you don't use it, we lose it. Peace, love and positivity Simon, Bekah and the kids

George Stephenson (1781 to 1848) Phil McDonald from Defeye Creative pays tribute to one of the country's most influential industrial innovators... who happened to reside in Chesterfield. Words: Paul Chapman Illustration: Phil McDonald, Defeye Creative

O

ur cover this edition features an illustration of George Stephenson, created by Phil McDonald from Defeye Creative, in honour of one of the area's most famous residents.

Stephenson also built the first public inter-city railway line to use locomotives in the world, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which opened in 1830.

An early success, Stephenson designed the miner's safety lamp, a lamp that would burn in a gaseous atmosphere without causing an explosion.

Perhaps not so well known is Stephenson's cucumber straightener. A keen fruit grower, he ordered blown glass cylinders to be made for his garden at Tapton House, where he spent the last ten years of his life. The elongated glass funnel was placed over the cucumber at an early stage to encourage the fruit to grow straight - not sure he'd have been a fan of Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall's campaign to encourage us to embrace our wonky veg!

Stephenson, born on 9 June 1781 was a British civil and mechanical engineer, known as the "Father of Railways", he's a great example of the Victorian desire for improvement in the industrial world.

A rail pioneer, Stephenson's railway work is one of the most important developments and inventions of the 19th century and key to the Industrial Revolution. He (and his son Robert) built the Locomotion No. 1, the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line, the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.

Stephenson's chosen rail gauge, sometimes called 'Stephenson gauge', was the basis for the 4 feet 8 1â „2 inches (1,435 mm) standard gauge used by most of the world's railways. Stephenson's Rocket was an early steam locomotive built for, and winning, the Rainhill Trials held by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in October 1829. Page 4

George Stephenson moved widely around the country pursuing his career in rail, living at Alton Grange (now part of Ravenstone) in Leicestershire until 1838, before moving to Tapton House in Derbyshire.

Stephenson is buried here in Chesterfield, in the grounds of the Holy Trinity Church, on Newbold Road. A plain memorial slab is positioned in the floor of the sanctuary and the stained glass window at the east end of the church was erected by his son Robert Stephenson. The lowest interest rates ever seen for equity release! Chesterfield based, Simon Chalk from Laterliving now! expands to cope with increased demand. Words & Image: Laterliving now!

Page 6

E

quity release Lifetime Mortgages are increasingly popular, helped by interest rates falling to record lows, tempting homeowners that have seen pensions and savings ravaged. The lowest interest rates now start from under 2.50% and with options to pay monthly, or to simply pay nothing and roll-up until the home is later sold, it’s understandable that more homeowners are considering Equity Release to support them in retirement. Simon Chalk of Laterliving now!, Chesterfield’s only specialist Equity Release firm, believes that there has been no better time to consider this option for providing capital or boosting income for the over 55s. During the current crisis, Simon has noticed a sharp rise in people looking to pay for care privately at home, with Equity Release providing a means of meeting the cost.

"Anyone looking to unlock tax-free cash tied up in their home to help themselves or their loved ones, can now benefit from access to substantial sums of money at the lowest interest rates.” Simon’s company has taken on two new advisers – Chris South and Amanda Hunt, to cope with the increase in demand for its award-winning service. Many people are looking to help and support their families as they struggle with the crippling financial consequences of the pandemic. “Equity release can be a sensible solution to a problem, but it isn’t always the right one, so sound financial advice from an independent specialist is essential. Clients often turn to us, having been swamped with sales brochures and emails from large national firms advertising on TV and internet. People want clear advice, not being sold something that might be completely wrong for them”. Under the current social-distancing rules, Laterliving now! offer safe home visits, and free consultations by phone, Facetime, WhatsApp or Zoom. They can help people decide if Equity Release is right for them, without needing to actually meet.

"Being based in Chesterfield makes us easily accessible" said Simon. "We have specialised in later-life planning for many years and being truly independent, means that we’re not tied to a limited number of lenders. We only recommend Equity Release from providers that, like ourselves, are members of the Equity Release Council. I served on its Standards Board, helping to form the rules that keep homeowners safe, and I’m now performing a similar roll on the Advisory Board to The Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA)." For any information regarding equity release, please feel free to call Laterliving now! or visit the website: laterlivingnow.com.

Food

Five Great Foods

And where to eat them in Chesterfield Words & Images: Molly Scott

C

hesterfield has a vibrant food scene. We have a wonderful array of independent cafés and restaurants, lots of pop up foodie events and a thriving artisan market that’s good enough to eat, literally! Now, more than ever, it’s crucial that we support our local businesses. Those lovely independents need our help - whether that’s dining in, takeaways or buying a gift voucher for future use. Lots of restaurants will be participating in the government’s ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme where the government will pick up half the bill, up to £10 per person for dinners in approved venues Mondays to Wednesdays in August. Check the socials of your favourite restaurant to see if they are getting involved or see the list at: chesterfield.co.uk/summer/eat-out-to-help-outin-chesterfield/ If you’re not quite ready to get out and about just yet, all the below options are available for delivery or collection.

Cruffin from Qoozies

Have you ever had a cruffin? These muffins made from croissant dough have become a firm favourite in our household. Baked daily by the Welbeck Bakehouse in Worksop and available from Qoozies (including through their delivery service on the City Grab app). The flavour currently available is Kinder Bueno and features roasted hazlenut praline mixed with white chocolate ganache, inside beautiful layers of expertly laminated pastry, topped with a chunk of the cult chocolate bar. A perfect, if rather decadent, morning pastry option. qoozies.com

Sharing platters from Bottle & Thyme

One of Chesterfield’s favourite venues have boxed up their much-loved sharing platters as a delicious treat to enjoy at home, or as a readymade picnic!

There are three options: a night at the local (featuring black pudding scotch egg, pork pie, cheeses, focaccia, peanuts, crisps and various chutneys); tapas board (featuring various cheeses, Page 10

cold cured meats, houmous, stuffed peppers, olives etc) and the English picnic (a selection of finger sandwiches and sweet treats).

All beautifully presented in an eco-friendly cardboard box, tied with string and decorated with fresh thyme. Sharing boxes serve two at a cost of £20 per box. bottleandthyme.co.uk

Rate Good Brownies

The aptly named Rate Good Brownies started as a home run business in the summer of 2017. If you’re a brownie lover, you may well have enjoyed one of Amy’s slabs of deliciousness as they are stocked by various cafés and restaurants around town. Rate Good Brownies are the most delicious brownies I have ever tasted. Dense, goey, chocolatey loveliness with indulgent, creative toppings.

Brownies, blondies (including vegan and gluten free options), double stacked celebration brownies (as an alternative to a sponge birthday cake) and cookies can be ordered for collection from her home in the outskirts of Chesterfield. rategoodbrownies.co.uk

Turkish barbecue from Afat’s Grill

This unassuming family restaurant inWhittington is a real gem. The food is simple, and the menu is limited but it is a joy to eat. Marinated meat, expertly grilled over charcoal, served with fresh, vibrant salads and the most beautiful rice I have ever eaten. Simple, fresh and healthy. And very reminiscent of sun filled holidays.

I’ve only eaten here once, just after they opened and at lunchtime. We were the only ones there, our very own private restaurant. They’ve since enjoyed rave reviews everywhere from Trip Advisor to the local paper so hopefully the atmosphere is a bit more buzzing. When ordering delivery via the City Grab app. Be sure to add your free bread and olives from the ‘extras’ section of the menu. afatsgrill.co.uk

Pizza

Is there anything better than a good pizza?

Pizza is probably my all-time favourite food and I have extensively researched the best local options. I can’t possibly narrow this down to just one option, so here’s my top three: Lombardi's, Pizza Pi & Tickled Trout For truly authentic Neapolitan style pizza - thin, stone baked crust topped with the most delicious tomato sauce, not overloaded with toppings or excessively cheesy - go to an authentic Italian restaurant. We adore Lombardi’s, a family run, bustling restaurant nestled off ‘The Doughnut’ roundabout, priding themselves on original Italian dishes cooked by Italians, served by Italians.

If you are dining out, be reassured that Lombardi’s has invested in various measures to keep diners safe including screens between each booth. Or use their collection or delivery service and enjoy at home. lombardis-restaurant.co.uk

I also love Pizza Pi, a relative newcomer to the Chesterfield food scene. Nestled on Beetwell Street, this bijou pizzeria has an attractive courtyard studded with fairy lights.

Pizza Pi prides itself on its authentically wood fired bases, but I think the genius is the creative toppings. In addition to the usual classics, Pizza Pi’s regularly updated menu, features flavours that are a little bit special.

One of my favourites is Pizza Valentino's with goats cheese, sundried tomatoes, asparagus tips and a splash of garlic oil. There’s even a bacon and egg pizza! Vegans can delight in a dedicated menu. And if you’re dining in a party of six or more, check out their ‘buffet’ option, a selection of pizzas, garlic breads and loaded fries served to your table for a very reasonable £12 per head.

Just outside Chesterfield, in the picturesque village of Barlow, is the delightful gastro pub, The Tickled Trout. This is one of my favourite places to eat locally. It does everything well - from coffees and cocktails to gourmet options... but I’m a sucker for a pizza and so I really struggle not to order one of their sourdough pizzas. I invariably chose the Pollo Piccante featuring chilli marinated chicken, red onion, garlic, chilli, Roquito peppers and goats’ cheese. It is truly sublime. I would also strongly recommend you try their arancini. It’s the best I have eaten outside Italy the stuff of dreams! tickledtroutbarlow.com

This year we celebrated 75 years since our victory in Europe. 75 years ago Great Britain was a different place, a time of hope and optimism shared by every man, woman and child. The Streets were filled with Union flags and the happy laughter of children playing. Stepping through the door of the Vintage Tearooms in Chesterfield you are filled with a sense of emotion experienced by our ancestors 75 years ago on that oh, so glorious day. From the union flags adorning the walls to the staff in period attire, The Vintage Tearooms is a classy eatery, an experience not to be missed. Fragrance tea and the sweet smell of cake greet you at the Vintage Tearooms and there’s a timely and varied menu. With a range of teas even the Queen would be enviable of, Earl Grey, Green Tea, Chamomile, Darjeeling and English breakfast tea... each sip takes you to its place of origin.

What is tea without a slice of cake? With an array of cakes even Mary Berry would be proud of, there’s something for everyone, all freshly baked from a local, independent supplier, soft and moist, not a soggy bottom in sight! Red Velvet, Sticky toffee, Neapolitan, Victoria, Orange polenta, Vegan Chocolate, and kid‘s favourite, the Jammy Dodger!

It’s not only ladies who lunch, or breakfast, or brunch! The Vintage Rooms offer a great range of afternoon tea options and a menu to suit even the most discernible pallet, there really is something for everyone. The full English breakfast, consisting of bacon, poached egg, sausage, beans and a grilled tomato but if a full English isn’t to your taste you may wish to choose one of the freshly baked scones and wash it down with a flat white or latte from the coffee menu. When the weather graces us with sunshine, the Vintage Tearooms has the most delightful outdoor space with traditional wood seating and good old British bunting. Should you wish to share their selection of tea’s and cake at home, takeaway options are also available.

Pizza The Vintage Rooms has two very welcome new additions; the woodfire pizza oven and make your own at home pizza kits. Meat, vegi, vegan and gluten free kits are available and proving very popular since their launch just a few weeks ago. Each kit makes two pizzas feeding up to four people. They’re a fun and tasty learning activity to do at home with the kids, or impress your partner or party guests with your pizza skills! The Vintage Tearooms serve woodfired pizzas, Thursday Friday and Saturday, and are two for the price of one, permanently! The woodfire pizza oven has made the Vintage tearooms the perfect place to relax, kick back, enjoy so some great food and a good cuppa. So, get your best Vera Lynne impression ready, and visit the Vintage Tearooms this summer.

The Vintage Tearooms is open from 10am seven days a week.

You're In Safe Hands Jones & Co.

C

hesterfield’s award-winning financial advice firm, Jones & Co, is now bigger and better and ensuring its clients are in even safer hands than ever before.

Founded back in 2009 by Mark Jones, Jones & Co is located on Glumangate in the very heart of the town centre. Its offices are a source of great pride for Managing Director, Mark, who has spent a great deal of time and effort to create a highly professional and hospitable environment for clients and colleagues alike. A very warm welcome “Everyone who visits our offices is guaranteed a very warm welcome by every member of our team,” enthuses Mark. “Danielle, our Office Manager, and Laura, our Financial Services administrator, are usually the first faces you’ll see when you get to Jones & Co and they’re always smiling, I’m not sure how they do it!

Page 14

“It’s really important that people feel at ease whenever they come to see us because we firmly believe in establishing long-term working relationships with each and every one of our clients. I’m very happy that we’ve managed to create that here – friendly faces on reception and exceptional financial advice and services from our highly qualified advisors, just two of the many reasons clients spontaneously recommend us to friends and family.” Unbiased, bespoke and jargon-free advice Continues Mark: “Over the last 10 years, it’s been my focus to grow the company sustainably by recruiting the right people who wholeheartedly support our ethos of providing unbiased, bespoke and jargon-free advice with the aim of preserving or accumulating wealth and security for our clients. “We now have a team of four financial planning professionals in place – Suzanne Jeakins, Pauline

www.s41local.com

Fernandes, Kirk Yeomans and I – who are committed to meeting the financial needs of people of all ages and backgrounds from across the UK. From pensions and retirement advice, to wealth management and business protection, we’re here to provide effective and efficient financial planning advice, and we have an exceptional track record. We’re also proud to be in a position to nurture new talent as well as acquire other financial services practices in the industry and, as such, we have a trainee independent financial advisor, Warren Parkin, who has been with us for just over 12 months. Building a stable future “When it comes to retirement planning, we don’t believe it’s all about pensions – that’s just one way to build a stable future. We work with individuals who are at all stages of retirement from 18-year olds who have no retirement plans in place to those who are imminently about to retire with company and personal pension plans.

“Whatever the situation, it’s our job to develop a financial strategy that will help each client to achieve their own personal retirement goals. It’s all about helping people make the right decisions and assisting them to gain the maximum income possible from hard-earned savings made over the years. A totally unbiased and professional view “When it comes to investment advice and financial planning, we’re here to unravel and make sense of the myriad options available on the open market from basic high street deposit accounts to complex risk-based investments.

“Whatever a client’s requirements, we will always start with a conversation about what and where that person sees themselves and what they’d specifically like to achieve from wealth management. As such, we use an in-depth questionnaire that we go through with every client to find out more about them and their approach to risk. This then enables us to devise a bespoke structure or portfolio to ensure we can advise on the right solution for their circumstances. And that’s something that we formally review on an annual basis or whenever each client wishes. Many clients simply pop in to see us for a catch-up if they’re passing, that’s how we operate, we’re always here to help and advise over a cuppa!

Vision Portfolios exclusively from Jones & Co – outperforming the sector “In order to continue to provide our clients with an unrivalled level of service, back in May 2019, I began work on creating a brand new range of investment portfolios. Our Vision Portfolios launched in June last year and delivered beyond my expectations in the first 12 months of going live, with our medium risk fund achieving positive growth results through a volatile market loss in February 2020 due to Covid-19*.

“Not only have they outperformed the sector benchmarks for risk rated funds, they have outperformed the Rayner Spencer Mills (RSMR) Portfolios across all risk levels, which were the range of portfolios used previously**. This clearly demonstrated, at an early stage the quality of the Vision Portfolios, and I’m confident that they will continue to grow and succeed in the future. What’s more, our investment committee now boasts Chartered Wealth Manager, and previous Brewin Dolphin and Charles Stanley team member, Pauline Fernandes.” In ever safer hands “During these unprecedented times, we are focusing on providing all of our clients with independent financial advice remotely, whenever the need arises. We call this ‘remote working’ and it enables us to protect our team and our clients whilst providing the very best service we can, exactly as if we were meeting up in person. So, not only are our clients’ financial plans in even safer hands than ever before, so is everyone associated with Jones & Co.” To arrange a free, no obligation consultation with Mark, Suzanne, Pauline or Kirk, please call 01246 550521, email: advice@ ifajonesandco.uk or visit www.ifajonesandco. uk *Source: Financial Express Analytics report 09/07/2020 **Please note, past performance has no bearing on future returns.

Chesterfield Specsavers Back Open for Business

Words & Images: Specsavers

NOW OPEN, but with a safetyfirst protocol in place, Matlock and Chesterfield’s optometry director, Allissa Charlesworth, tells us about the in-store changes to expect, how she kept busy over lockdown (even starring in a national tv ad!), and why it’s really important for us to get our eye tests booked in after 100 days of lockdown.

fundraiser that paid for half a dozen electronic tablets for local care homes, so elderly residents could still keep in touch with their families while in lockdown. It was a true team effort which we’re all really proud of. You might have even seen a sneak appearance of yours truly talking about it on the recent national tv ad! As things start getting back to normal, we understand you might be feeling a bit nervous about coming into store again. But with all that screen-time working from home, it's certain 100 days of lockdown will have taken a toll on our eyesight over recent months. We’re also really concerned about potentially dangerous issues such as glaucoma or retinal issues which may have gone undiagnosed, which is why it’s great to get people back into store.

We’re delighted to be back open for our customers in Chesterfield. Although we were open for essential care and emergencies throughout lockdown, it definitely wasn’t the same without being able to welcome in the smiling faces of our regulars for a catch-up and a chat.

Along with the rest of the town, we kicked off our lockdown by looking to keep ourselves busy by helping the community and charities that might need it. As part of this, we launched a Page 18

To make this happen, we’ve made some changes to our normal practices, making sure our stores are as safe as possible for customers and staff alike. We've even opened a "pop up shop" just to the rear of the store. This will give us additional space to spread out our footfall, and will also give us an extra staff room for our team to enjoy their breaks safely while adhering to social distancing. If you need a sight test you’ll be able to book appointments as normal, but we’ll give you a call back to make sure you’re getting the right help – whether that’s in store with us, or talking to us remotely using our brand new RemoteCare. All collections and adjustments will now be at the Pop Up Shop, to increase safety and reduce waiting times.

www.s41local.com

Here's what else we’re doing We’re sticking to the social distancing guidelines, so the number of people in store will be limited, with one member of the household at a time (unless you’re with a child or vulnerable adult), and we’ll also ask that you keep at least two metres apart to keep each other safe.

Following government guidelines, our store teams will be wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for their protection as well as yours. You are also invited to wear a face covering.

You’re more than welcome to try on as many glasses as you’d like, but after you’re done we’ll ask you to give them back to us so we can give them a good clean before we put them back out for the next person to touch or try on.

After each person we see in our test rooms, we are thoroughly disinfecting the room and all the testing equipment used during the eye test, ready for the next appointment.

We’re also going to avoid using cash, so if you can, please pay by card or electronic payment instead.

And, if you buy a new pair of glasses after your eye test, ask us about home delivery. There’s no need to come back in store, and you can get them direct to your door. If you’ve got an appointment booked, but you’re not feeling well or you have any COVID-19 symptoms, we’d ask that you don’t come in until you’re feeling better. And we’ll make sure to arrange for a later date. As you’ll see, we’ve spent a long time over lockdown getting our practices in place to reassure staff and customers back to store. I personally can’t wait to welcome the smiling faces of our customers back in store again! If you’d like to speak to us about your eye health, please call us or visit our website.

Business Intro

The greatest wealth is health From CBD to infrared saunas, 360 Wellbeing has it all Words: Simon Paterson Images: 360 Wellbeing Centre

H

ealth & Wellbeing is at the forefront of everyone’s mind right now. I was eager to meet some of the team at the 360 Wellbeing Centre on Chatsworth Road to hear what services they offer and how they help the communities of Chesterfield, by offering a range of traditional and progressive treatments, products and therapies. I caught up with Samantha, Kelly and Andrew at 360 Wellbeing.

How did 360 Wellbeing get started? It’s quite the venture…

Kelly: I met Samantha and Andrew in 2019 when they were referred to me by a friend. They were seeking a professional nutritionist, one who would understand their supplement range and add value and expertise to the business. After meeting with them and going through their product range and plans, I was completely on board!

Samantha: I personally fell into this world from being in a corporate environment and having very much a structured mapped out life. Sadly, I lost my father and little dog very quickly and wanted some help with the grieving process. This brought me into the wellbeing world, I needed to understand and improve my own wellbeing, both mental and physical. Finding the help I needed wasn’t easy, so I wanted to support the residents of Chesterfield by making it accessible at a local level. Looking at the wide range of qualifications and experience the 360 team has, it’s clear they have all the bases covered from Registered Nurses and Counsellors to Clinical Directors, Colon Hydrotherapists and Psychotherapists. Page 22

Kelly, you are the Head Nutritionist here at 360, what does your role consist of and what is your approach to Health & Wellbeing?

Kelly: My speciality is working with the gut. I am very passionate about advising people on how to nourish the body. It’s not just about weight management or counting calories. I advise on how to nourish the body to repair it, ensuring we get the best performance out of it. Whether you are a topclass athlete looking for marginal gains or just want more energy during the day, I can help you. From what I understand everything is tied into the gut?

Kelly: That’s right, the gut has a huge impact on not only your physical, but mental health, playing a vital role in the brain's functionality. It’s important to not only consider what you eat, but also how you eat it. There’s a famous phrase ‘you are what you eat’. That’s not strictly true. It would be more accurate to say, ‘you are what you absorb’. You may have a good diet, but if you aren’t absorbing it you won't feel the benefits. My one tip would be to eat what’s around you, what’s in season. Juicy green salads are great in the summer months. Walking into the 360 Wellbeing Centre has an instant calming effect, from the quirky sofas and table, to the hand painted art on the wall by talented local artist Sally Ginger Illustrations. It’s clear on that a lot of love and thought has gone into the décor, making it a place you want to visit time and time again.

www.s41local.com

What can someone expect from their first visit to 360?

Samantha: At 360 we believe in starting at the beginning. When you walk through the door we ensure we go through everything we offer, how we can help you and take the time to get to know you. The more we know - the better we can help you, and we can help everyone. A lot of people come in here because they want help with getting to the bottom of something, whether it’s regular headaches, IBS, insomnia, menopause, depression or aches and pains. A good place to start is with an intolerance and blood test. Our testing is amongst the best in the world and something we are very proud of. The information we get from both these tests enables us to treat most things with excellent results.

The 360 Wellbeing Centre has the only infrared sauna in the region. What are the benefits of an infrared sauna?

Kelly: The infrared red penetrates deep into the muscle tissue, increasing the blood flow and encouraging the muscle to repair quicker. We had one lady in who had been in a car accident, she had tried everything to reduce the pain in her back. Naturally, she was sceptical when entering the sauna. When she came out almost completely pain free, she couldn’t believe it! One of our local running clubs use the sauna and a couple of runners have seen this reduce their times by over a minute!

Business Intro Having such a broad spectrum of knowledge at 360 you have been able to design and produce your own range of products. Tell me a bit about what’s on offer.

Samanta: As mammals we can have a lack of CBD, which is a cannabinoid found in all animals. CBD can have a positive effect on pain relief, seizure prevention, anxiety and depression etc… We are running a road show, when it is safe to do so called ‘CBD and ME’ which helps people understand CBD, which one is best for them and how much to take etc… Our Nutra 7 supplement consists of seven key ingredients that improve mental health, boost blood circulation, aid weight loss, improve sleep quality and protect you from illnesses such as the common cold, amongst other things. Vitamin boosts seem to be all the rage in Hollywood right now, with celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Madonna and Simon Cowell swearing by them, and let’s be honest they look pretty good. This is something you offer here at 360 isn’t it? Samantha: We offer a range of intravenous vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

levels, detoxify the liver and kidneys, speed up the metabolism and improve hair and nail health. I think the A-list celebs have vitamin boosts as it slows down the aging process!

After chatting with Samantha and Kelly it’s clear that the 360 Wellbeing Centre is here to meet the needs of the local community by supplementing traditional health care. Their flexible, progressive approach will have a positive impact on its service users. 360 is a most welcome addition to the town and I am sure it will be here for many years to come. Learn how to save a life with FirstAED Free 45 minute presentaiton to community groups and clubs Words & Images: Lou Costello

W

ould you know what to do if faced with somebody experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest?

That’s the question Lou Costello, of First AED, wants people to think about and how they would react in a situation where every second counts.

A sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) when the heart stops beating abruptly due to an electrical malfunction, is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and is responsible for around 100,000 deaths a year in the UK. Anyone, regardless of his or her age or fitness level can suffer a SCA anywhere, at any time.

Even when there is access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) not many people know what to do and exactly what steps to take until further medical assistance arrives.

As Lou explains, the chance of successful defibrillation declines at a rate of around 10 percent for every minute of delay before an AED is attached to the casualty.

The first thing you must always do if you suspect someone is having a SCA is to call 999, says Lou, who is based in Chesterfield. There is an assumption that even if you have a defibrillator close to your property then some sort of AED superhero in a cape will materialise to deal with the emergency. Sadly, this isn’t the case and the reality is that it may take the ambulance crew several crucial minutes to get to your location - meaning it could be down to the individual making the call to take control.

Secondly, once the call is made and while waiting for the ambulance to arrive, you should commence CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). If there is a defibrillator available, connect it to the casualty and follow the prompts.

His training company First AED offers courses designed to teach people the skills required for dealing with a sudden cardiac arrest, including the use of a defibrillator and how to perform effective CPR. The course lasts for between three to four hours and classes can be delivered at the organisation’s own premises, with delegates receiving a certificate upon successful completion. First AED can also source and install AEDs if required.

Meanwhile, Lou has implemented several measures to ensure that this vital training can take place during the COVID–19 pandemic. These include reducing class size, social distancing, temperature checks and single person drills until restrictions ease. Lou continues to explain that less than one in ten people will survive a cardiac arrest outside of hospital care. Many of these people die unnecessarily due to no defibrillator immediately available or where there is, nobody trained or confident to use it.

Rather than a defibrillator being seen as a magical device that is locked away in a box, he wants more people to know what that device is for, how to gain access to it and how to use it if necessary. First AED is currently offering a free 45-minute presentation to community groups, golf courses and businesses that may be interested in installing a defibrillator or would like to know more about AED and CPR training. To enquire about the presentation or our training course: T: 07980 017010 E: info@firstaed.co.uk or visit firstaed.co.uk

In those scenarios, knowing exactly what to do and having the confidence to do it can be literally lifesaving.

Now Lou, who has years of experience working in the military and the police, is urging community groups, sports clubs and businesses to ensure that volunteers and staff know how to use an AED. Page 26

Out & About News Cycling: Local An Opinion I was recently asked by Dom Stevens from Destination Chesterfield 'what I love about riding a bike around Chesterfield?' Words & Image: Paul Chapman

"Where do I start and how many words do you want, was my initial reaction! Why? Simple, I just love to cycle, always have and always will.

"Cycling when I was young was how you got to your friends after school. There were a few years where I abandoned the bike as motorbikes and cars took over, but it wasn't long before my commute across Nottingham to Boots Head Office each day involved cycling. "7am slicing through winter traffic and dropping onto quiet cycle paths and towpaths through the suburbs is fab, there isn't anything like it, a real wake up before work. The introduction of the mountain bike had me driving up to the Peak District every weekend, and this was prior to suspension on a pushbike, painful stuff but still addictive!

"Years later, I now live on the edge of the Peak District, 25 minutes of pedalling from my front door and I can be at the top of Beeley Moor. The hills and valleys looking like all my favourite toys spread out on the lounge floor!

"I've competed a few times but only for a bit of fun, I've never been that quick, but now sees me in a much more serious competition - competing with my 14 year old son to get the odd 'King of The Mountain' (see Strava). But mostly I just try to hang onto his back wheel downhill as I watch a vision of my past youth, blind to the dangers involved, and clearly, loving it as much as I do." "Chesterfield is a great place to ride, we have some very useful bits of infrastructure and a network of bridleways that take you away from tarmac. I've drawn up an 11 mile route around the west side of town, Strava says it's 14% road, 55% Page 28

dirt and 31% unclassified. It should take around an hour and if you take my suggested directions you can avoid many of the road sections" (see chesterfieldlocal.com for details).

What would you ask for the Chesterfield cyclist in the future?

"It would be a cycle superhighway out to the Peak District. This would create an additional benefit of providing a safe route for people on the west side of town to get into the town centre, out of the way of the lorries and vehicles that travel along Chatsworth Road."

You can plan your bike rides in and around Chesterfield by either downloading the Chesterfield Cycle Map, produced by Chesterfield Cycle Campaign or going online to the Cycle Streets website. Take a browse and see if you could use a bike for your commute or escape to the quiet lanes. Once you have explored the bike rides and cycle routes in Chesterfield, why not discover the rest of the The Peak District and Derbyshire, easily accessible from town. From family-friendly cycle rides on a traffic-free trails, or some more challenging mountain biking on rugged terrain, there is something to suit all abilities.

Marketing Peak District and Derbyshire have produced a range of Cycle guides for the wider area including routes and videos to plan you next cycling adventure. Chesterfield Cycle Campaign has further information and routes to explore the area. chesterfieldcc.org.uk/maps-leaflets/

Garden Tips

Summer Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

Page 30

• Second Early potato varieties will be ready to harvest now, depending upon when they were planted. They usually take about 16 weeks to produce a good crop. They can be lifted as you want them, but if you notice slug holes in the crop it is better to lift them all before the damage worsens. Store only the undamaged tubers and use the others quickly. • Summer pruning of apple and pear trees can be done now. This helps them to keep their form and remain healthy without having congested growth. • Most hedges can be pruned or trimmed into shape now, bird nesting should be over and this will give time for limited new growth before it slows down in autumn. • Keep sowing quick-maturing salad crops – rocket, radishes, mixed leaves and some lettuces are all candidates – they’ll go on growing until the first frosts. Several lettuce varieties including Winter Density, Great Lakes and Lambs lettuce (corn salad) will last through the winter. • If you’ve got empty patches of soil, consider sowing a green manure; this will cover the ground and put much needed nutrients back into the soil. This will stop weeds becoming established and is best dug in before it sets seed. • Several herbs can be sown at this time of year in a greenhouse or cold frame e.g. chervil, dill, parsley and coriander can be protected from frost this way and will crop during the late season and winter. • Pot up any strawberry runners that have rooted or encourage them to do so by pinning them firmly to the ground and make sure they are watered in a dry spell. • Apart from gently pottering around the garden, this should be the time of year you can spend most time simply enjoying it; however, it's the time most plants, including weeds, also enjoy, so try to stop them setting seed – there's an old saying, 'one year’s seeding is seven years’ weeding'... • Keep feeding birds to attract them to the garden, where they will also hunt out damaging insects and larvae. A shallow pool is a great wildlife draw, with the possible added bonus of seeing blackbirds washing themselves in a comically Victorian fashion, constantly checking to make sure they're not being overlooked, and covered head-to-toe in black.

Chesterfield Football Club Sharing memories Words & images: Michael South

T

he legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly once said, “Some people think football is a matter of life and death…I can assure them it is much more serious than that". While Shankly was likely speaking in jest, it’s a question worth asking… Before the lockdown in March I'm sure many Spireites - as well as other football fans across the land - would have agreed with that quote, many may still do. However, despite the magnitude and impact of COVID-19 on the entire world, life has to go on; and that includes football too.

With stadiums across England closed, clubs like ours had to get creative to satisfy the huge appetite for the the game that fans still have. It was nice to see that Chesterfield FC turned to technology and social media to keep the fans engaged with the beautiful game. Every Saturday during lockdown, the Spireites replayed classic games for the fans; Jack Lester’s farewell vs Exeter, the 4-4 draw in 1994 against the mighty Liverpool at Anfield and, of course, the 1997 FA Cup semi-final to name just a few. The club also ran a weekly football quiz to keep the old grey matter working, all delivered online.

Not only have the club been delving into the archives, they've also been making some changes at the ground too as it prepares for the eventual return of football. We don't know yet when the fans will flock back to watch the Spireites but when they do, they will notice a few changes to the place; including the name of the ground for starters! Say goodbye to the ‘The Proact’ and say hello to it's rebranding as the ‘Technique Stadium'.

Page 32

Technique are the current club sponsors of the team’s kit and, as you can imagine, the change of name has had some mixed reactions from the faithful supporters. Never has Saltergate sounded so good! Speaking of which, the tenth anniversary of the final game to be played at Saltergate has just passed. 8th May 2010 saw the Spireites take on AFC Bournemouth, which included an interesting match day fact. Jalal (the CFC keeper of this doomed season) was the opposition keeper for Bournemouth that day! Not only that, but there were a couple of anniversaries too, including;

- The 25th anniversary of Town winning promotion at Wembley with the help of Tony Lormor (see pic) against Bury in the play-off final - The 23rd anniversary or the infamous 3-3 draw in the semi-final of the FA Cup against Middlesbrough. Who can forget Jamie Hewitt (see pic) and his spectacular late equaliser at Old Trafford to earn CFC a replay. We'll not mention Chesterfield's disallowed goal here... Back to the present and, though the football season was brought to an abrupt end in March, CFC donated usage of the stadium to help the community fight back against COVID-19 as the location for key workers to be tested by the NHS.

Hopefully by the time this goes to print, the environment is a lot brighter, safer and a date has been announced for the footy to restart, as well as the impending takeover of the club moving that bit closer to fruition. I for one am ready to return to the live action of it all. But until then, stay safe and I'll catch you next month!

Looking for Sponsors: Chesterfield FC Women

Chesterfield FC Women are looking for local sponsors for the senior and girls academy teams, which provide a pathway for local women and girls to the first team.

Sadie Henson says "We have around 120 girls and women playing for the club. We rely a heavily on local sponsorship, even though we are affiliated with the men’s team our finances are completely separate and we are self funded.

"We have a lot of new and exciting things planned for our players. I understand it has been a difficult year so far, but we are hoping that football will start again in the not too distant future and we want all our girls to have things in place."

If you own a business that is able to help, please contact Sadie as below to discuss the various sponsorship levels available. Contact: Sadie Henson 07708 957563 or email women@chesterfield-fc.co.uk
