Hello and welcome to the Autumn edition of S41 Local Magazine.

In our last edition of S41 we printed the world’s hardest crossword. Literally no one completed it! This was of course our fault as we printed the wrong grid to the clues, or the wrong clues to the girl! We wish to thank everyone who called or emailed us to let us know. You were all so lovely and had nothing but positive words to say about our humble publication. As an apology we promise not to do it again (fingers crossed). August was a fantastic month for our local independent restaurants, cafes and pubs with thousands of us heading out to take advantage of the ‘eat out to help our scheme’. We’re sure we are not alone when say we may have put on a pound a or two. We believe it’s called ‘taking one for the team’. Now the scheme has ended please do continue to frequent our local eateries in favour of the multinational, chain restaurants. These amazing businesses play an integral part in our local economy and remember ‘use it or lose it’.

In this edition we celebrate three of the town’s most prestigious venues, the Winding Wheel, the Pomegranate Theatre and the Chesterfield Museum. Our front cover designed and illustrated by the hugely talented Ali Scothern (Herbert & Rose), pays homage to the venues as they open back up for business. We hope our article encourages you to pay them a visit or buy tickets to a show for a friend or family member. We welcome yet another regular writer to the team, Aaron Brown. Aaron has launched several social media channels (@S40Time) where you will find vlogs, blogs and interviews with some of Chesterfield’s most influential people in the arts and entertainment industry, past and present. We love Aaron’s passion for Chesterfield’s history and culture and feels he fits our publication perfectly. Welcome aboard, buddy.

We have several new businesses to introduce you to including the new gaming bar in Chesterfield Town Centre, Darwin and Bear. We really enjoyed our visit there and have been back twice since. Who doesn’t love Friends the board game, pizza and Super Mario? We have our first ticket giveaway since March and lots of new local businesses to share with you, as well as the return of our ‘what’s on’ section, albeit a little smaller than before… We hope you enjoy reading this edition as much as we enjoyed writing it. Peace, love and positivity

P

erusing Instagram, we stumbled across Ali Scothern's (Herbert & Rose) images and we knew we had found our next cover artist.

Her Instagram feed featured her beautiful illustrations of some of our most cherished and historic buildings so we approached her to take on this edition's cover. Ali lives in Chesterfield with her husband and two teenage boys, she is a local teacher who loves being out in the Peaks and browsing the local market. We asked Ali about her unique style, her inspirations and what she loves about living in Derbyshire. How old were you when you started drawing? "I honestly cannot remember, starting out in primary school I enjoyed drawing and painting. It was my teacher in secondary school who encouraged me to hone my skills. As a teenager, I steered my studies towards a career in art and design. In my late teens I lost confidence in my artistic abilities however, and pursued a career teaching languages instead."

How did your unique style of illustrating evolve? "When I began painting again as an adult, I fell in love with watercolours, I love the different effects they create. I also love to draw with ink and a dip pen, so many of my illustrations combine the two."

How did Herbert and Rose come about and where did you get the name? "Herbert was my grandfather’s name and Rose, my mother’s name. When mum died a few years ago I felt compelled to really push my art and wanted to create a brand name, it seemed fitting to choose the names from two prominent figures in my family and I thought Herbert and Rose sounded perfect. I didn’t choose my Dad’s name, because his name was Ron, and I didn’t think Ron and Rose sounded quite as good!" Which is your favourite piece of work? "My favourite has to be ‘Say hello’, an illustration of a young and older hare. It was one of the first pieces I made into a print and it continues to be a best seller." Page 4

What inspired you to illustrate Chesterfield’s Theatres and Museum? "We’ve only lived in Chesterfield for the past couple of years and I couldn’t believe how many beautiful, old buildings there were and I wanted to challenge myself to try something different. In time I'd like to illustrate more of them, there are so many to choose from."

Who do you admire in the Illustrator world? "I love Quentin Blake’s illustrations as they are so playful, and his uneven or exaggerated lines create the most delightful characters. I also admire Helen Oxenbury’s work, she uses watercolours effortlessly to create wonderful children’s illustrations."

If you could illustrate for any author, who would you choose and why? "Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows was a childhood favourite. Endowing animals found in British wildlife with human characteristics and creating the imaginative stories really appealed to me as a child. To illustrate these stories would have been wonderful. Having said that, Robert Ingpen’s whimsical illustrations would take some beating!" What’s your favourite piece of Derbyshire artwork or sculpture? "It has to be the Green Man in the woodland area at Crich Tramway Museum. When my boys were younger, they loved going to find it."

What’s next for Ali and Herbert & Rose? "My cards are available in a few lovely shops in Derbyshire and Yorkshire and I hope to expand to more shops nationwide. I would also love to create an illustrated map of Chesterfield, but it might take me a while!" herbertandrose.co.uk @Herbert&Rose

Conservatory or Orangery? The Window People have answer

Our most frequently asked question is: ‘What’s the difference between a conservatory and an orangery?' Well, an orangery is a cross between an extension and a conservatory. It has a brick base, solid pillars, large windows, and a partially glazed roof. They feel very much like an extra room integrated into the house with fantastic space and light! Conservatory or Orangery Extending the size of your home with a conservatory or an orangery gives you that extra space to relax in day or night and can add significant value to your home. But which one is right for you? Orangeries Orangeries date back as far as the 15th Century. Originating (no pun intended) from the renaissance gardens of Italy, when

Page 6

technology had progressed enough to produce large sheets of glass.

Used to grow citrus fruits (hence the name) and house trees and plants in the colder winter months. The Dutch led the way in Northern Europe by building them on residential properties as fashionable green houses, a sign of wealth and prosperity.

Orangeries can easily be adapted to fit the space available. If you are looking to extend your kitchen, dining or living room then an orangery is the way to go. We recommend a sliding bi-fold door with a flush finish to the garden patio, perfect for those who enjoy being outdoors in the summer, come rain or shine. Whether you have a lot or a little space, a square or a rectangular space, The Window People are on hand with no obligation expert advice.

www.s41local.com

Conservatories Conservatories came along in the early 16th century. Like orangeries they were used by wealthy landowners in the Mediterranean to grow and cultivate a variety of fruits, plants, and small trees. Coming to our shores in the 18th Century, Kew Gardens in London is a world-famous and beautiful example of a greenhouse conservatory, so big it not only houses plants and trees, but supports a variety of wildlife as well.

Modern conservatories come in a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes. If your aim is to make the most of your space, with its elegant lines, then a square or rectangular Georgian may be the one for you. Its high sloping glazed roof floods it with light making it an uplifting, mood enhancing place to relax and unwind. The aptly named P-Shape conservatory can be installed on a single storey extension as well as a bungalow. Combing an Edwardian roof with either a lean to or double hinged, ensures its versatility. T-Shape conservatories are hugely popular adding beauty and statement to any property. Like the P-Shape they get their name from there appearance and can be installed on single storey properties.

If you are seeking something a little more classical and subtle you may opt for a striking Victorian or a dignified Gable. The Victorian is the most popular conservatory in the UK. It compliments all styles of homes from new builds to period properties. The most popular has five facets, a bay front and five main windows at wide angles. The Gable conservatories roof is the same style as a traditional house with two sloping sides. The body is either square or rectangular and has a very regal feel to it. Expert advice There are a plethora of options available to you when it comes to conservatories and orangeries. The Window People have a wealth of experience and can give expert advice so you can find the right style, shape and size to fit your needs, with an almost endless selection of customisable windows, bricks and roofs. Call The Window People today for a free, no obligation quote and you could extend your home in time for Christmas with your dream orangery or conservatory, or add new life to your existing one.

Out & About

Derbyshire's Best Five great days out across our county Words & Images: Molly Scott

W

ith movement still restricted and indoor meet ups limited to a few individuals Molly Scott has highlighted a few of our local outdoor spaces that enable us to visit and stay safe.

Chatsworth House Chatsworth is undoubtedly Derbyshire’s finest country house. Jane Austen is believed to have based her idea of Pemberley on Chatsworth House. More recently, it has featured in the cult classic Peaky Blinders.

Chatsworth has extensive, exquisite interiors; breathtakingly beautiful all year round, but something truly magical when the house is dressed for Christmas. The 105-acre gardens are equally impressive. Famous for their rich history, there is something for everyone. On a sunny day, grown-ups and children alike enjoy paddling in the Cascade, so don’t forget to pack a towel. Families with younger children would enjoy the farmyard with animal handling and milking demonstrations, and large woodland playground with rope park, trampoline, slides and water and sand play.

Take a picnic or enjoy the range of catering facilities at Chatsworth. The Carriage House is ideal for families and serves freshly made, seasonal dishes using local ingredients in a canteen style. For a more refined experience, The Flying Childers restaurant offers the ultimate English indulgence – a luxurious afternoon tea served on Wedgewood china. Be aware that currently all tickets must be pre-booked, check out the website for details. chatsworth.org

Calke Abbey Derbyshire is blessed with several magnificent National Trust properties, but Calke Abbey has something for everyone and is probably the most family-friendly. Page 10

Prior to arriving at the main car park, turn right when signposted for ‘Calke Explore’, a new outdoor recreation area. After you’ve explored there you can drive (or take a 15-minute walk) up to the main car park for the house.

You can picnic throughout the grounds at Calke Abbey - but one insider tip is to park in the overflow car park facing the parkland to enjoy your own idyllic little spot (and save you lugging the food around with you all day). As a family, we love exploring the extensive parkland, but you can visit the house if you wish. The walled garden features an array of beautifully maintained flowers. Interiors fans will swoon with delight at the faded beauty of The Orangery.

There’s a good adventure playground for younger children right near the main car park (although this is currently shut), which is also close to the toilets and café. Children will also enjoy exploring the long tunnel and the ice bunker! All visitors must pre-book tickets, which are released every Friday night for the week ahead. Social distancing measures are in place and I felt really safe here. nationaltrust.org.uk/calke-abbey/whats-on

Matlock Bath Matlock Bath is the closest to a seaside resort you’ll find in Derbyshire, with fish and chips, amusement arcades and local, independent cafes and pubs.

If you can find a spot, parking at the station is a good base to explore. Start with a coffee or a gluttonous freakshake at F’Coffee then cross the road and the river using the bridge opposite. You can then have a very pleasant, fairly shaded walk along the river which takes you past a playground. Cross back over the river at the next bridge you come to and then meander back up the main drag of Matlock Bath. Highlights include the fishpond (the actual pond containing huge ornate fish, and the pub of the same name - check out their

www.s41local.com

beer garden to the rear to the pub), an aquarium, arcades and lots of souvenir shops. Remember, it’s pretty much obligatory to have fish and chips. You are at the faux seaside after all!

If you’re in need of further entertainment, The Heights of Abraham has cable cars affording magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Or, for something free, we like Matlock Meadows, a small, working farm with free children’s playground when you use their café or buy some of their handmade ice cream.

Bakewell The pretty market town of Bakewell is rumoured to be where Jane Austen wrote and based Pride and Prejudice, whilst staying at The Rutland Arms. If you’re feeling similarly romantically inclined, visit Weir Bridge to see the love locks left by starry eyed lovers. Please do consider the environmental impact before adding your own, sorry to be a killjoy!

Otherwise, feed the ducks during a riverside stroll. Mooch around the local shops and then take home a Bakewell pudding from one of the numerous bakeries or cafes. The hot new place for coffee is at Coffee by Lovage, the side hustle of chef Lee Smith, who has recently set up a fine dining restaurant of the same name.

Dovedale (and a quieter alternative) Dovedale stepping-stones is an iconic Derbyshire spot - which also makes it really popular. To enjoy this site without the crowds you really need to get here very early, pick a random weekday, a day with less favourable weather - or ideally all three! Hathersage stepping-stones are equally pretty but much more of a hidden gem. You can even have a paddle a little further downstream. For details of where to park and directions for an easy walk see: peakdistrictkids.co.uk/hathersage-stepping-stones

Write the life story you want

M

ost of us have an idea of how we’d like our life to go and where we’d like to be in the future. The question is: will you always have the money you need to live the life you’d like?

As soon as you begin your working career, you start to accumulate wealth. So, if you want to write a good life story, it’s imperative that you protect your wealth as soon as you can. It is possible to write the life story you want, and it starts with something called ‘wealth planning’. Here at Jones & Co, we work with people of all ages and backgrounds to protect and enhance their wealth. It’s all about enhancing your current financial situation and that begins by knowing what your short, medium and long-term goals are. What are your specific aspirations? Where are you going, and what does it take to get there, financially speaking?

You’ll then need to use your accumulated wealth to support you for the rest of your life and, hopefully, have a lump sum to ultimately pass on to your loved ones.

Irrespective of your age or personal circumstances, it’s our job to ensure that your wealth works as hard as it can, it is protected and preserved. With professional advice, all of this and more can be achieved. Please don’t think you can’t afford to work with an independent financial advisor either. You can and it could be the best money you will ever spend. Afterall, writing the life story you want is priceless.

Once we understand your personal circumstances and agree your goals, we ask clients to complete a risk profile questionnaire and we then look at what you’re currently saving and/or investing every month. We also take into account any employer’s pension you may have and ascertain if it’s actually working for you. We always look at the whole picture, this is so important. With all this information to hand, we will advise and create a bespoke wealth planning strategy that could encompass a wide variety of financial products and services from a private pension and investment plan, to income protection and life insurance. No two wealth planning strategies are the same because we’re all different.

Our objective is to grow your assets so that you are able to provide for your own future and that of future generations if you have children and family. If you’re in your 20s, you might just be stepping on the career ladder and hoping your income will rise over the years. You may be in your 30s and wanting to start a family, buy your own home or both.

Or perhaps you’re in your 40s or 50s and your children are heading to university and you’d like to pay off your mortgage and retire soon. Either way, as every week goes by, you’re accumulating wealth, and you may even inherit money one day. There will always come a point, however, when you stop work and move into retirement.

The fees you pay as a client will, of course, impact on the growth of your investment. As an ethical firm we would not charge a fee that is disproportionate to the value we will bring to you long-term. We then have a great vested interest in delivering the best results possible from the risk you are prepared to take; rest assured you’re in safe hands. Mario Would Love It

Darwin & Bear combines 80s gaming and Mexican food ... and we love it! Words: Simon Paterson Images: Darwin & Bear

M

any of us will remember the 1980s for its questionable outfits, haircuts and pop music. From Flock of Seagulls to Nick Kershaw, and shell suits to perms, it was a decade which pushed boundaries not only in pop culture, but in technology as well. It was the decade home consoles became a must-have. Fast-forward 35 years and you’d be hard pushed to find a UK household without a console, PC, or iPad. We have become a nation of gamers. From Nannas playing Wordscape and Candy Crush on their phones, to kids using VR headsets in their bedrooms, gaming is here to stay.

But what about those games we played as kids on the old consoles such as Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter 2 and Tetris? For many years these have been lost to the archives, never to be enjoyed again. Well, that’s what we thought, cue Darwin and Bear.

Darwin and Bear are the 'New Kids On The Block', bringing the old school back! They are Chesterfield’s first, and only, gaming restaurant and bar! Scrabble, Monopoly, Nintendo Entertainment system, Sega Mega Drive, PlayStation - you name it, they’ve got it. Darwin and Bear is the brainchild of Ben Kirby, a passionate gamer who wanted to share his enthusiasm for video and board games with the residents of Chesterfield. With over 20 years’ experience running bars and nightclubs, it made perfect sense for Ben to combine the two. But Ben didn’t embark on this adventure alone, this is a multiplayer game! Page 14

www.s41local.com

No stranger to a PlayStation herself, Antonia joined Ben on this exciting adventure. With over eight years’ experience in the hospitality industry and an eye for detail, Antonia is responsible for most of Darwin and Bears interior design. The bar has wooden gaming booths with built in screens, with a variety of consoles to choose from. Whether you were a Sega, Nintendo or PlayStation person, Darwin and Bear have the booth for you. At the side of the bar you will find a stack of board games and upstairs there is an American pool table. It’s the perfect place to meet friends, go on a first date, or bring the kids to show off your skills, whilst enjoying some great food and a relaxing drink. If you’re lucky you may even win a game! Darwin and Bear have a tasty and varied menu. We asked Ben and Antonia what their favourite dishes are:

"Chesterfield is a great fit for what we wanted to do. There is nothing else quite like Darwin and Bear in Chesterfield, we are quite unique. Chesterfield has a great mix of old and new, from the market, which I love, to the new independent shops such as Shop Indie. It’s cool and we love it here. Our town centre location on Glumangate is just off the main strip, meaning it’s easily accessible but quiet as well, perfect," says Antonia. Ben and Antonia have big plans for the business (post covid), from gaming competitions to speed dating and board game nights. Darwin and Bear is a most welcome addition to Chesterfield town centre and another great reason to visit the high street. So, warm up those thumbs and visit Darwin and Bear today.

"I’m leaning towards the chicken fajitas. I’ve always been a fan of Mexican food and we do a mean fajita! Washed down with one of our fruity cocktails, of course," recommends Antonia. "My favourite dish must be the deep-fried beef chimichanga, with a Brewdog IPA. So glad we put it on the menu. I probably eat far too many, if I’m honest", exclaims Ben.

Ben and Antonia moved to Chesterfield from Derby and love it here.

Strada Estates Meet the new co-owners of Strada Estates Words: Simon Paterson Images: Strada Estates

O

pened in 2013, over the last eight years Strada Estates have worked hard to establish themselves as one of North Derbyshire’s go-to Estate Agents, selling 100’s of properties and creating a few local jobs along the way.

Now, in 2020 with Jamie Roden and Sharon Macaulay at the helm, they are well equipped to take on this new world that we find ourselves in and have adapted the business perfectly. Jamie and Sharon are the proud new business partners behind Strada Estates, but they are certainly no strangers to the business, or the property game, with over 30 year’s combined experience! Sharon enjoys leading on client liaison and progressing sales, whilst Jamie’s skillset is valuations and viewings. They compliment each other perfectly.

Sharon has been part of team Strada since day one. With over 24 years of experience in the property game, her knowledge is impressive. Originating from Loch Lomond, Scotland, Sharon and her daughter Robyn moved

Sharon and Robert

to Chesterfield ten years ago when her partner Robert was serving in the armed forces and they all fell in love with Chesterfield and decided to relocate on a permanent basis.

We caught up with Sharon to find out what she had to say about the state of the current property market and what she loves about her job.

"I class myself as a very lucky person, there aren’t many people who can honestly say that they love their job, but I am one of those people. After 24 years of being in the industry I can tell you our days are never dull, as with every industry, at the moment, we are learning how to adapt to the current situation we all find ourselves in. We are witnessing a strong marketplace with many sales agreed and completed, our main goal is to help our clients move on to their new home with as little stress as possible. I am privileged to have met and worked with many lovely clients, many of who I now class as friends and I am sure there will be many more to come," says Sharon.

Jamie is a local, family man and lives in Highfield with his wife Hannah. They are expecting their first child in January, a little girl named Strada (ok, so we guessed at the name). Jamie is leading the charge on marketing at the ‘new Strada’ and has big plans for the future of the company. Jamie is very proud of their five star Google reviews and his face lit up when he told us that Strada has been nominated in the Chesterfield High Street Awards. We asked him why he got into the Estates industry and what he enjoys about his work, he had this to say:

“From interiors and construction to architecture, I have always been interested in all things property. Having worked in the industry for several years I can honestly say it is a passion of mine and couldn’t ever imagine doing anything else. I love meeting new people and seeing what they have done with their home or giving some help and advice on where and how they can add value.

working with them to find their next home!" says jamie. Strada Estates have hit 2020 with a bang, with their cutting-edge 3D house tours. This technology allows potential buyers to view the house online and take a virtual tour of the property. This enables the viewer to get a real feel for the home before they have even stepped foot in it, very cool! We have no doubt that under the progressive leadership of Jamie and Sharon they will continue to grow bringing many years of happiness to their clients and the residents of Derbyshire. S

40 and S41 Local magazines work hard to champion our fantastic local businesses. Many of these businesses have been hit hard by Covid-19, but probably none more so than our beloved museum and theatres. So to complement this months cover and support local venues we set about learning a little more about these wonderful buildings, what memories they carry and what the future holds.

The Winding Wheel First opened in 1923 as a picture house, The Winding Wheel is one of Chesterfield’s most prominent venues when it comes to functions. Inside the Grade 2 listed, tudor-style building you can see a plethora of events being held each week. From West End Musicals to stand-up comedy, and music concerts to community events, there is something here for everyone. The space inside is home to a stage bar and three regularly used rooms – the auditorium, function room and ballroom which boasts a beautiful stained-glass dome over the dance floor. Over the years it has brought us some of entertainments biggest names including The Proclaimers, Paddy McGuiness and Sir Bob Geldolf! The cinema closed in 1981 reopening in the 80s, The Winding Wheel has opened its doors to a wide variety of acts. Reasons to make a visit in the remainder of 2020 include popular tribute acts, comedians with household names, and some hidden gems of the UK music scene. • The Cavern Beatles (Tribute) - Thu 29 October • An Evening With Kevin & Joanne Clifton - Wed 11 November

Pomegranate Theatre A two-minute walk from the Winding Wheel is another of Chesterfield’s prestigious venues, The Pomegranate Theatre. Formerly the Stephenson Memorial Theatre and before this The Chesterfield Civic Centre, it recently celebrated its 70th birthday. In the 1950s you could find; Wilfred Brambell (Costar of Steptoe and Son), Donald Sutherland (from the Italian Job and The Hunger Games), Diana Rigg (The Avengers and ‘Olenna Tyrell’ in Game of Thrones) and in more recent history the Oscarwinning star Gary Oldman and Claire Sweeny from ‘Brookside’ (the TV series, not the area!). The theatre stages several live shows each year, along with satellite shows of the UKs most soughtafter performances and events. Here's a taste of some of the upcoming events. Culture

Chesterfield Museum Established in 1994 on St Mary’s Gate is the Chesterfield Museum. Here you'll discover the story of Chesterfield from its origins as a Roman stronghold, the creation of the Medieval Market, said to be over 600 years old, through to the Industrial Revolution and beyond! Built in 1879 as The Stephenson Memorial hall named after the father of the railways, George Stephenson, who spent much of his life in Chesterfield and is buried just up the road at The Holy Trinity Church on Newbold Road. Although, at the time of writing, the museum is closed, they are engaging us in local history with online sessions, on both their website and social media, you'll find the different ways they are keeping all ages both entertained and informed with activities to do at home such as: •

Dusting for fingerprints

The Tudors

• • • •

Vikings

Fantastic Fermentation Wartime recipes Local history

On their Facebook page you can find a ‘Building of the week’ quiz and old photos from around the town. Head on over to Chesterfield Borough Council’s Youtube Channel and you will see three virtual events on behalf of the museum. If that’s not enough then on the museum’s website you’ll find things to do at home, past exhibitions, highlights from the collection, and lots more! As the arts once again opens its doors and pulls back the curtain, it’s up to us as a town to ensure the comedians, actors, musicians and staff are met with big smiles and a full auditorium, albeit from a safe social distance. For further information on all three venues please head over to the web.

Dave Hemingway, founder member of The Beautiful South releases his debut album with his new band Sunbirds. Having retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016, Dave has been keeping busy with guitarist, songwriter and collaborator Phil Barton, with Cool To Be Kind signalling the arrival of the new band, new songs and a new sound.

The music Sunbirds make takes on board all of the bands and artists Dave and Phil have loved over the years. It chiefly blends the musical instruments of rural America with an occasional twist of grungy guitars and sets them against lyrics that remain very much at home in the towns and cities of England. "Although a lot of the songs have a Country feel," says Dave "they’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire." The formation of Sunbirds also sees the introduction of new discovery Laura Wilcockson on vocals and violin. Laura comes from a classical/orchestral, as well as folk, background. If you’re lucky, you might spot her busking around Mansfield. Completing the line-up is legendary UK session drummer, Marc Parnell, who has toured with Joan Armatrading, The Blockheads and Jethro Tull, to name but three. Marc can be heard on recordings by Girls Aloud, Pet Shop Boys and Gabriella Cilmi's hit single ‘Sweet About Me’. Cool To Be Kind is the result of a few transitional years in Dave and Phil’s individual personal worlds. It tells tales that cover contemporary Name:

themes as well as age-old matters of the heart and soul - all viewed through the bottom of a recently drained pint glass. "There’s no exact science here," says Phil. "We’re just enjoying ourselves and expressing whatever we want, whether it’s about love, greed, social isolation or Gary Lineker’s crisp adverts."

Cool To Be Kind is released on Friday 30 October but to check out their new single ‘Meet You On The Northside’, visit sunbirds.co.uk/northside, plus an album mix showreel featuring a few tracks from the album sunbirds.co.uk/showreel. Music

S40 Time

New to Youtube and championing Chesterfield's music scene, past and present. Words: Simon Paterson Image: S40time

S

40time (pronounced "Showtime") is a new Youtube channel/podcast celebrating the music, arts and culture of Chesterfield, Derbyshire and The Peak District. It's the brainchild of singer/songwriter Aaron Brown - formerly of legendary Chesterfield bands The Dazy Age and The Chasers, who now sings with The WonderWhys, who've twice played The Ally Pally to over 6,000 in London, recorded with Arctic Monkeys' producer Alan Smyth and supported The Happy Mondays when they came to Town in December 2018!

The pilot episode, aired in June, saw Aaron interview his first guest, David McPhie, taking him back to the very place where he recorded Joe Cocker's demo reel on Chatsworth Road (his old flat, but now Palfreyman's Music Shop), which secured him his record deal in 1967 and shot Joe to stardom. With over 15,000 views at the time of going to print, Aaron’s debut is proving rather popular. David McPhie also championed the music scene in Chesterfield in the 60's and 70's by bringing world class acts like Pink Floyd, Free, Bill Haley, Fleetwood Mac, Little Richard and Jethro Tull to town. As well as running his own vinyl shop, 'Some Kinda Mushroom', he somehow found time to manage seminal Chesterfield band, Shape of the Rain. David will have his own future episodes on S40time - interviewing some of the most prominent musicians and figures from the town's past, and featuring local jazz pioneers Al Needham and Denny Lawson have already been recorded over the summer, along with Jonathan Rowlands - who managed Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck, and now runs Bakewell Music Festival. He also sat down with John Cuttriss - who wrote a book about the Carlton Club down on Whittington Moor in the 60s.

Aaron, however, will stick to what's happening in the here and now, and the first episode to air sees him in conversation with Chesterfield film-maker, Kai Undrell, whose film 'Stand Up' is available on Amazon Prime. Infectious Matlock dance outfit Patawawa is the following show, where singer Sam Wilmot joins Aaron ahead of their imminent album release to talk about their recent session on Tom Robinson's show on 6 Music and Radio 1, as well as a tour of Japan. In the pipeline are interviews with Stevo, of the area's best-known live music venue - Realtime Music; Liam Walker, who appeared on The Voice last year; and Trash's, Daniel Longmore. Having earned a regular prime slot at Elastic FM, the region's latest and growing FM station, Aaron will also be previewing all his guests for S40time on there, as well as here (S40 and S41 Local magazines), and hopes S40time can provide a much-needed boost to musicians and artists who are especially struggling at this time. With a presence on all major platforms including Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, S40time promises to bring Chesterfield and Derbyshire up to date by delivering a slick digital experience, showcasing even more reasons to be proud of our town.

Live theatre returns to Chesterfield Chesterfield Borough Council is pleased to announce that Chesterfield Theatres will again be hosting live performances from October. The first three live shows scheduled to take place are part of the Autumn Play Season, which takes place from Tuesday 13 October until Saturday 14 November at the Pomegranate Theatre. Customers will be able to purchase tickets to all three plays for the price of two. The tickets will go on sale from Friday 4 September.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The return of live performances to the council’s theatres represents another step forward in Chesterfield’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. “I know the team have worked hard to make this possible and we very much look forward to welcoming our regular theatregoers as well as lots of new customers to our Covid-19 secure theatres.”

The three plays for the Autumn Play Season are Love Upon The Throne, Dead Certain and Live Bed Show. Each play will feature two different performers, drawn from the same social bubble, in order to help limit contact with other performers and audiences.

The Pomegranate Theatre is already open for cinema screenings and council staff have received lots of positive comments from customers about the safety measures that have been put in place.

The council has also followed the latest Government and UK Theatres guidance on how to re-introduce live performances to ensure the safety of performers, theatre goers and staff. Tickets for the first three live shows and for other live performances as well as tickets for cinema screenings can be booked on the Chesterfield Theatres website.

When booking tickets online, customers can also spoil themselves by pre-ordering tasty treats including ice creams, sweets and drinks at a reduced price. Snacks and drinks can also be purchased when attending the Theatres, but staff will only be accepting card payments.

The Theatres team are looking forward to welcoming you back and are grateful for the messages of support that they have received from theatre goers through this difficult period.

Garden Tips

Autumn Garden Tips

I

f you have heavy clay soil, make a start on digging it over, leaving the lumps to be broken down by frost over winter. If you have any used compost, which will improve the soil structure, incorporate it as you go.

When leaves have fallen then this is the time to give your soft fruit, blackcurrants, blackberries and all Words: Inspire Community Garden the hybrids some shaping while Picture: Robert Nixon Betts they are dormant. Remember that many of these appear on the previous year’s growth, e.g. raspberries and blackcurrants. When your crops of tomatoes etc. have finished, thoroughly clean greenhouses and cold frames while the days are still warm enough for them to dry out.

Birds (especially pigeons) are fond of leafy green vegetables, so deter them with netting or lengths of black thread tightly stretched across and around the plants. Keep harvesting runner and French beans; like many vegetables (including courgettes), they will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed - it’s the same principle as dead-heading ornamental plants. But there comes a time when they really

have finished, so cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots, which will have collected valuable nitrogen, in the ground. Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic and continue to sow winter lettuces - start in modules under cover (there are several varieties with varying degrees of hardiness: lamb’s lettuce, Winter Density, Valdor and All the Year Round are just a few).

It is time to think about ordering new fruit trees and move existing ones (and shrubs) while the ground is still warm.

Keep on top of tidying jobs but leave as many ornamental seedheads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs. Houseplants will need watering less often, and don't need to be fed any more this year.

Cover ponds with nets before heavy leaf-fall clogs them up – remember to remove the collected leaves before they weigh the net down or start to rot.

Chesterfield Football Club A new chapter Words & images: Michael South “You have six supporters as directors and we all want to make it work.” Mike Goodwin - The New CFC Chairman. As a Spireite, Friday 7th August felt like a landmark day for the club. Sat at the press conference it felt history was being written which left me strangely optimistic, something I haven't felt for a while. Not only has the club returned to the fans but it's the first time a football club has been owned by a charity. The Community Trust has been part of the club for years and Mike Goodwin (pictured in the middle of the three) becomes the clubs chairman. By his side are Martin Thacker MBE (Left) and Dave Simmonds (Right) who are both vicechairmen. There will also be three fellow trustees; Jane Cooper, Terry Ward and Dr Paul Stankard. The club secretary will be Peter Whiteley. The new Community Trust have promised the following key principles:

1. Use the power of football and Chesterfield FC to make a positive difference to the lives of the people of North Derbyshire and be recognised as an excellent employer.

2. Build and maintain partnerships with commercial organisations and community bodies in North Derbyshire.

Proper stability is critical now for EVERYONE at the club, including the fans to get back to winning ways. So, no matter how long it takes to return to the football league, if it’s done correctly, than I for one don't mind as long as the atmosphere's there. I feel this is the closest we've been for the “bounce” to return to the stadium which has been missing for a long time. With our new owners though, it seems we have a fighting chance. “I've been a supporter of this club since I was 6 or 7, when my dad took me to Saltergate and I stood on the Cross Street end" our new chairman proudly recalled at the press conference.

2020 may be a year to forget for all things Covid-19 related but this is the year that our club's rebuilt on solid foundations, is looking to the future. Make no mistake, It will take time (and money) but as money is unfortunately the name of the game in football these days, the club needs to tread carefully if it's to balance the books. With a Chairman who's got over 30 years as an accountant under his belt, I'm confident we're in safe hands! To the future! COYB's!!!

3. Create opportunities for learning, training and employment pathways and champion inclusivity to make the Technique Stadium and all activities staged there as accessible as possible.

4. Preserve the heritage and safeguard the future of Chesterfield FC as a professional football club with the aim of playing at the highest level possible.

5. Engage with supporters and involve them where possible as a transparent and accountable club.
