Thank you for all your feedback, it was great to hear from so many of you and get such positive comments. And we’ve listened to you - gone is the trendy text and we have replaced it with something that we hope you can all read … please let us know what you think. We’ve also had a great photo for the front cover from David Grant thank you David. Many of our advertisers have been contacted - thank you for mentioning us when you’ve used their services - keep it up! However, at the time of going to press Ashgate Hospice haven’t had one application for the Midnight Walk on the form we included in the April issue - so come on everyone (well ladies) get entering - even if you don’t use the form, let them know you saw it in S40 Local. It’s on the 20th June and I will be there helping Richard Harrison of RMH Catering (page 13) to dish out the bacon butties, so it would be good to meet some of you ! Air Quality & Levels of Pollution on Chatsworth Road In March this month I attended the Brookside Neighbourhood Watch meeting down at Storrs Road. My reason for attending was the talk being given by Darran West, Head of Environmental Services at Chesterfield Borough Council. He was talking about the services offered by his team, but of more importance to me was updating us on the issues we face following the air pollutants in the area breaching Government Objectives set in 1995. The Environment Act of 1995 set objectives for levels of 7 air pollutants, during an assessment of 2006 the level on Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) detected along Chatsworth Road in particular breached these limits which now means the Government has to be informed and steps taken to address the issues. You may be interested to know that it’s not just Chatsworth Road, Derby Road (A61) and Chesterfield Road (A619) to Staveley has also breached the limits set, and we all know that the major source of the pollution is high levels of traffic and congestion, especially at rush hour. As a result Chesterfield Borough Council are planning to declare this an Air Quality Management Area and conducted widespread consultation in September / October 08 to feed into an Air Quality Action Plan which will aim to address the local air pollution levels and improve local air quality to an acceptable level. Air Quality Action Plans are already being implemented in a number of cities and towns across the UK and examples are available that focus on Edinburgh, Oxford, Bristol, Salford, Doncaster etc … it’s quite a substantial list, 233 local authorities in total have declared an Air Quality Management Action Plan. Typical focus areas of other Air Quality Action Plans include; •
Alternative Transport covering areas such as Greener forms of transport, better ways to school, increased cycle usage and improved routes, improved Public Transport and other options that move us out of our cars.

Road Network Options covering areas such as improved and consolidated transport plans, bus lanes, re-routing of traffic, ways to reduce traffic, parking changes , delivery time changes etc. Basically ways in which the impact of road based traffic can be lessened.

Vehicle Emissions including lobbying government over cleaner fuels, increased emissions inspection within AQMA’s and the usage of cleaner fuels.
We will have to wait and see what our local plan brings but in the meantime further information is available on www.airquality.co.uk and from our local council at http://www.chesterfield.gov.uk or by contacting the Environmental Protection team at Chesterfield Borough Council on 01246 345 345 Should I be concerned? For most people in good health, the levels of pollution in the UK won’t have short term serious effects, but when levels are high you may notice eye irritation, start to cough and find it hurts when you breathe deeply. But this is about us helping our own area, so if you want to do your bit for Chatsworth Road you can ask yourself the following questions; Do you need to make the journey? Could I walk or cycle instead of taking the car? Could I take the bus or train? … I don’t know if you’ve tried the bus down Chatsworth Road but they go about every 20 minutes so you don’t have to wait around for too long. If you really have no option other than driving then consider driving more smoothly - save fuel and pollute less, try not to rev your engine, ensure you vehicle is maintained, engine properly tuned, tyres at correct pressure, and when stationary turn off your engine.

Why is it important to support Ashgate Hospice? “Hospice provides specialist palliative care free of charge to people with life limiting illnesses in North Derbyshire. The aim of the Hospice is to provide the best quality care and support for patients and their families/carers. The Hospice delivers this care in a number of settings including; In-Patient Unit, Day Centre, Out-Patient Suite, Home Care and Hospital. The specially trained staff provide a wide range of services including medical, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, welfare and benefits advice and bereavement support. Even though the Hospice receives a grant from the NHS through Derbyshire County PCT we still need to raise over one and a half million pounds annually through voluntary contributions and fundraising. Community Page Litter Picks in Walton: Walton Church has been organising monthly litter picks in the area's parks and green spaces since June 2008 as part of our working together with other organisations to improve the local community. From 4 volunteers (it was raining!) to over 20, adults and children, we’ve been out there bagging an interesting collection of rubbish from the Walton area … anything from Did you know that Brampton has a Community Band playing Folk Dance? Community Bus Norma Keenan got in touch about the Community Bus which runs to Morrisons from Greenways twice a week. It picks up on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 11:45 from Greenways - stopping at Moorland View, Greenways, Foljambe and then Walton Road, and returns from Morrisons at 13:05. It’s not very well used at present and if it doesn’t get more support we are likely to lose it. So please support the service if you can.
