Introduction Hi to all S40 Local readers, The leaves are starting to turn, the kids are back at school and it’s been a funny month for S40 Local our businesses are tightening their belts, so your support is more vital than ever - please keep your pound local, use the services of our great local businesses and tell everyone about S40 Local! We’ve had more great feedback this month - Paul at Ashgate Garden Care, who placed an advert for the first time last month, wrote to say: “I've had some good leads from the advert I placed in the September issue of S40 local and the advert has more than paid for itself”. Next month we’re running a Christmas gift guide featuring local places to go for fantastic gifts. So if you’re thinking Christmas pressies, look no further, we’ll have some interesting and slightly different gift ideas for you. And, if you run a business that sells fantastic gifts , get in touch at the number below, so we can make sure your gift ideas and offers are there in the guide. In December we’re hoping to give you ideas for keeping Christmas dinner a little bit more local, so if you have any foodie or decorative ideas and suggestions it would be great to hear from you. Thanks to Frank in Brookside for his “Smile” poem, we’ve put it on the community page – he’s got a good point, and I hope it makes you… smile that is! Then to finish off - last but by no means least, keep spreading the word about S40 Local. Thanks and have a good October. Paul. Call: Email:

Climate change gives us a powerful motivation to reduce the amount of oil we consume; peak oil means that, on a planetary level, there will be less oil for us to consume, whether or not we want to cut down. So many aspects of our lives are dependent on a cheap and reliable oil supply – not just transport and heating, but food, plastics, and clean water – that it’s difficult to imagine the transition to an oil-free, or at least a less oil dependent, lifestyle. 2009 Harvest Swap People swap home grown produce

Safer Neighbourhoods News PC David Randell’s update on the Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT). ► The “What’s On” guide gives details of the drop in centre this month. ► On 4th and 5th of August the SNT, in association with the Community Safety Partnership completed a Smartwater event in the Ashgate/ Brampton area of Chesterfield. SmartWater is a colourless solution that is dabbed onto valuables, to provide a unique chemical ‘code’ which is registered to you – conclusively proving ownership. It cannot be easily seen by the naked eye and is almost impossible to remove. The liquid glows under ultraviolet light making it easy for the Police to detect. ► In addition the SNT are looking to provide youth activites during October half term in conjunction with the Walton Evangelical Church. Contact the office on 01246 231002 for details.

Incinerator Update Monday 5th October @ 7pm - US Professor Paul Connett’s "Question and Answer". Paul, an ex Cambridge graduate, is a world renowned toxicologist and expert on the health and environmental impact of incinerators. Phoenix Hall, Henry Fanshaw School, Dronfield. Friday 9th October @ 2pm - Special Meeting of the planning committee at County Hall, Matlock. A pre-planning meeting and opportunity for both sides to present their case. It is important we demonstrate to the 'new' county councillors the depth of feeling.

Smiling

If you are interested in these events please contact: karon.glynn@btinternet.com. Smiling is infectious You catch it like the flu When someone smiled at me today I started smiling too I passed around the corner and someone saw my grin When he smiled I realised I’d passed it onto him I thought about the smile And then realised it’s worth A single smile like mine Could travel round the earth If you feel a smile begin Don’t leave it undetected Lets start an epidemic quick And get the world infected Author unknown
