Introduction Hello and welcome to a bumper issue for December’s S40 Local, I hope you enjoy it. We’ve seen some exciting developments in our area this month and the magazine has been able to get a first hand insight into two of these. Brampton Brewery opened their pub, the Rose and Crown, on the 23rd November. Chris Radford and the team supported S40 Local from the very first edition, and it was great to go down and interview Chris and find out more about this new venture – have a look at pages 8 and 9. A newer edition to the magazine was Frederick’s ice cream last month when they advertised a trial to get us ready for the launch of their new ice cream home delivery service. Well this month we were also invited to visit Frederick’s at their parlour to taste these delightful flavours and to find out more about the new service that is being trialled exclusively with you, the S40 Local Readership. Have a look on pages 12 and 13 to see what all that is about. As you’d expect if you know anything about Fredericks and their ethos, it’s about making sure you get your ice cream as close to perfect as you can get it. So please show them your support, give it a go and provide your feedback so they can test it and get it just right for a fuller roll-out. We also have a new gift shop arriving on Chatsworth Road this month – Moo Moo, across from Libby’s and Created Gallery. With this great mix of shops it will further enhance this area of Chatsworth Road, a great place for hunting out special gifts for Christmas and throughout the year. We also welcome a whole host of new advertisers, have a look and see whether they’ve got services that appeal to you. Staying on the Christmas theme from last month we’ve included more great gift ideas, but we’ve also got a guide and shopping suggestions for keeping Christmas dinner local and supporting our local suppliers – please give it a go and see how much on your Christmas table you can source from S40 or close by. Right – now to 2010. Christmas is causing a bit of a print headache for the January issue of S40, and we’d like to relax and have some family time, so we’ve decided to have a January / February combined edition. Jan/ Feb will be out on the 24th January, with a print deadline of 7th January. We’re hoping this issue will feature some suggestions for local businesses who can help you with your New Years Resolutions, whether you decide to – learn a new language or play an instrument, promise yourself you’ll get fit, decide to pamper yourself EVERY month, resolve to finish off jobs on the house, or book the holiday of a lifetime - we’ve got S40 businesses waiting to help. Anyway – all that remains is to thank you all – readers and advertisers for your support and encouragement during 2009, I’ve met some amazing and inspiring people through S40 Local and look forward to getting to know many more of you in the coming year. Wishing you and your families a Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Best Wishes, Paul. Issue 9: December 2009 Deadline for copy for Jan/Feb 2010 edition 7th Jan 2010 Distribution by 24th Jan

Brampton Brewery: “Rose & Crown” The latest step in the Brampton Brewery journey is the opening of their Cask Ale Emporium at the Rose and Crown in Brampton, I went to ask Chris Radford all about it ...

>> When 6 pubs a day are closing in the UK … why open a pub now? “It’s true many pubs are struggling and closing down, but some are doing better than ever, and the only sector that is growing at the moment is the cask ale sector. Our new Rose and Crown Cask Ale Emporium – plans to emulate all the good things these pubs do and specialise in Cask Ales, the only growth sector – so with those things on our side we reckon we should be able to make it work.” >> Why are so many pubs closing down? Some say its the overwhelming regulations – what do you think? “Regulation is not the real problem;

increasingly it’s down to the PubCo’s that now own so many of our pubs. Traditionally pubs were owned by brewers, but legislation exists now which prevents anyone who brews beer to own more than John Hirst & Chris Radford ready for business a certain number of pubs. A Taste of Chesterfield “I’m launching an ice cream delivery service in Chesterfield with five different flavours of Fredericks ice creams, would you like to bring some people down to taste it!” Well that’s the best offer S40 has received so far, so we jumped at the chance! I’m no ice cream connoisseur, and I’d never thought about the difference between eating ice cream, as it’s meant to be! That’s before I was educated by tasting the delightful flavours of John Frederick’s freezer fresh ice cream! John Frederick explained what made the difference “ if ice cream defrosts and is re-frozen the ice cream separates and crystallizes, spoiling the flavour” and that’s how most of us treat our ice cream - we pick it up in the supermarket, finish our shopping, wait to pay at the till, forget the butter (other last minute items are available), we then find our way back to the till to pay, pack the car, travel home, unpack the shopping and then pop it in the freezer - without probably even thinking about the affect on the flavour! So the idea behind home delivery is not just about sitting on the sofa watching a film and deciding you NEED ice cream and a pizza, but more about making sure when you get your ice cream, you get it at it’s best - straight from Frederick’s refrigerated vans and straight into your freezer ... so it doesn’t have chance to defrost and spoil the flavour. Anyway - back to the tasting! John invited us over so we could really get to grips with the ice cream thing! I think I got it, however I’m always up for going back and trying again! We visited him in his factory where his tasting parlour is crammed with facts, clippings and details of the traditional business of ice cream making. The six of us were then treated to generous helpings of: Vanilla, a classic smooth creamy vanilla - ice cream perfection if you like to keep it traditional and versatile, would go great with a dollop of Christmas Pudding I think! Chocolate at it’s best with the bitterness of real dark chocolate, with a high % of cocoa beans, a perfect desert in it’s own right. Strawberry, fruity and sherbet, what did someone say “like a milkshake in a bowl”. Chesterfield, Pomegranate and Raspberry, a hit with us if you’re looking for something refreshing, it’s light and zingy. Bakewell Pudding, a taster’s favourite and as Laura Harrison succinctly put it “weird but just like a Bakewell tart”, it seemed to be a hit with Laura and Sammy from Brookfield school. Six flavours waiting to be sampled We also tried Rum and Raison, a hit with the adults with it’s rich rum flavour but perhaps a little too strong for little Joel Nadin. So you’ll soon be able to enjoy Frederick's Ice Cream from their fleet of vans, at the café in Queens Park, the Gelateria Café in Bakewell or in the comfort of your favourite arm chair, straight from your freezer. For me John encompasses something that’s key to S40 ... A passion for making sure whatever he does is the best it can possibly be - he wants to deliver it, because he doesn’t want to compromise the flavour! A local producer of quality goods. How many other neighbourhoods can boast a local ice cream company? You can, of course, get ice cream elsewhere, you can buy it from the supermarket, BUT you can also support your neighbour - John and his family live here, he employs local people and he wants to see Chesterfield and S40 succeed. I know where I’m going to spend my pocket money! In OUR Community!

CHESTERFIELD ICECREAM - Pomegranate and Raspberry? John explained—”we wanted to develop a true local ice cream for Chesterfield and as the Borough’s Coat of Arms bears a pomegranate tree, we decided that should be the basis for our new Chesterfield flavour.” INTERESTING FACT - Apparently this may derive from the pomegranate of Granada which Henry VIII adopted as a badge on his marriage with Katherine of Aragon. Although it is claimed the pomegranate was in use by Chesterfield long before Tudor times. For unknown reasons in the 17th century the pomegranate was discarded in favour of arms - Gules on a gold fess a lozenge azure - but the pomegranate was restored to the Seal in 1893. INVESTING FOR INCOME – THE CHOICES People investing for income have a number of options when considering how best to make their money work harder for them. And with bank interest rates at historically low levels, those relying on interest from savings to supplement their income are increasingly recognising the need to seek out the alternatives to make up the shortfall. Despite current stock market volatility, equities (shares) still represent the pick of the bunch when looking for long-term income-generating potential. Investing in asset classes like property, bonds and cash all help in the drive to generate income, but history shows that equities outperform all comers over the longer term. This is due to a number of factors; the trend for dividends from company shares to increase over time, the potential for capital gains in the value of those shares and the significant boost to those gains that can be achieved by reinvesting dividends until the income tap needs to be turned on. This combination of rising income and capital growth over the medium to long-term is vital to help fight off the main threat to income – inflation.

the interest had been taken as income – inflation would have reduced the spending power of the capital by almost a third (Source – Lipper Hindsight). The lack of potential for capital growth is the biggest drawback in putting too much faith in deposit accounts to meet longer-term income needs.

companies or governments. The level of interest the investor receives depends on the creditworthiness of the borrowing company or government. The more risky the borrower is, the higher the interest paid out to investors, to reflect the amount of risk the investor is making with their capital.

By comparison, the income generated by an equity investment made in 1992 would be more than double that from deposits in 2007, proof positive that equities have the potential for a rising income over the medium to long term (Source - Lipper Hindsight). Of course, the value of an investment in equities can fall as well as rise, and the income produced from them can not be guaranteed. Equities do not provide the security of capitol that is characteristic of a deposit account with a bank or building society.

Investment managers tend to run portfolios of bonds spread across a range of different borrowers, with a mix of high and low credit ratings to create a welldiversified investment with a balance of income and capital security.

So what are the options when investing for income, other than equities? One is commercial property, which offers a real opportunity to achieve capital growth and a rising income to combat the effects of inflation.

Investment in a commercial property fund provides a spread across a portfolio But while in the main share values have of offices, retail outlets, warehouses and increased over time, nothing can ever be industrial premises. Deposits offer investors security and instant access to their capital when required and are therefore an important part of an overall income strategy, but inflation will reduce the real value of the capital over the medium to long term. For example, £10,000 invested in a deposit account in 1992 would be worth around £6,600 in 2007, in real terms if 16

While fixed interest investments are often considered less volatile than equities, it is worth remembering that their value can go down from time to time and that inflation will still affect them, particularly the buying power of capital returned when the loan finishes. By carefully combining the options available, people can create investments that maximise income potential, while at the same time controlling risk to capital and providing the opportunity for inflation-beating returns. But choosing the right blend of incomegenerating investments is not easy, which is why many people leave this to professional wealth management specialists in order to find the right income solutions. This provides unrivalled access to investment know-how and the opportunity to invest across a range of different investment firms, with the peace of mind of knowing that money is being well looked after. A Local Christ As regular readers will appreciate S40 Local was set up to meet the needs of local businesses and provide a cost effective channel to contact potential local customers and neighbours. As Christmas approaches we’ve been reminding you about some of the great local independent businesses that can be found a short walk away (well in most cases) from your front door, selling great gifts for your family and friends. This month we continue the theme of Christmas, by looking at the food you’re going to serve up on 25th December. So, as you probably can guess - it would be great to get your roast from the farm shop or local butcher, your vegetables delivered from Riverfords, from local shops or the market, your drinks from the small independents, the contents of your cheese board from Davidson’s just outside the market hall etc etc … you get the picture! Of course, if you think you’ll miss the mad experience that ensues at the supermarket, don’t let me stop you. Arriving to experience the car park rage, as the car park overflows, shelves stripped bare, people rapidly losing their Christmas cheer as they miss out on the last sprouts (that they may not even like) and everyone at their wits end. Your business means more to the small guys, they’ll be much happier to see you, probably friendlier and your food is more likely to be sourced from somewhere close by. I read in something recently where a certain high end retailer claimed their grocery delivery service is “greener than walking to your local supermarket”. It doesn’t quite stack up for me. And, I’m sure local produce from small independent

20

suppliers who source their products from local producers must be better? Anyway - To help you think about places to go to buy your Christmas dinner we’ve included a ‘Christmas To Do List’ with suggestions on where you can go to support the small independent retailer or shop.

There’ll be more ways than this and I’ve probably missed some fab suppliers, we’ve tried to list a few pointers to get you thinking. It seems a shame but I bet you still need a trip to the supermarket … but if you do manage the whole thing independently let us know!

Riverford Organic have sent us an alternative recipe for the Christmas sprouts - it’s on the next page if you fancy trying something different! Last point is a reminder to enjoy it and don’t worry if the brussels get boiled to mush, sit down with the family perhaps have a glass of wine and let someone else do the pots! Oh that reminds me … must get the dishwasher fixed - does anyone know a local repairer?

Chesterfield’s 2nd Annual Potato Day Bill Leverett of Transition Chesterfield has been in touch and wants to make sure we all know about the next event. Thanks Bill, I’ll sharpen the peeler! Transition Chesterfield will be holding another Potato Day on 30 January. If you missed last year’s, this means potato-related fun and games for the whole family. Your kids can try their hand at making potato people or using potato stamps to decorate shopping bags, while you try to beat the record for longest continuous potato peel, or bowling a lumpy potato down a track to hit a target. But there’s also a serious side to the event: we’ll be offering 68 different varieties of seed potatoes at 12p/tuber. If you don’t know what a seed potato is, or you didn’t know that there were 68 different kinds of potato (there are actually many more than that!), you should come along to learn a thing or two. Potatoes are one of the easiest vegetables to grow, and certainly a very satisfying one. Kids enjoy digging the holes, putting in the seed potatoes, and they love helping

Try your hand at Potato Bowling to harvest them, finding the big potatoes in the soil like buried treasure. And the plants grow very quickly, so you can see the change from day to day. And who doesn’t like to eat potatoes? With all the different ways to cook them, there’s something to please everyone. Different varieties of potato are best suited for different ways of cooking them. Some are better for baking, some for mashing, others for chips. And they all taste different, some of them quite remarkably different. You don’t need a lot of space to grow potatoes, either. You can grow them in a dustbin, a large plant pot, even a sturdy plastic bag, like the one your potting compost came in. You just need some soil. That’s why we’re selling seed potatoes by the tuber, to encourage people who can only plant a few. Potato Day is part of a larger effort to encourage local food production. Most of the potatoes you buy in the supermarket, like other vegetables, are grown with pesticides and fertilisers made of oil, planted and harvested with oil-powered machinery, and shipped from far away by oil-powered boats and trucks. As oil becomes scarce and expensive, we’ll have to relearn how to grow things for ourselves, locally and by hand. Potatoes are a great place to start. Potato Day will be in The Pavements shopping centre, 30 January, 10am-2pm. Visit www.transitionchesterfield.org.uk for more information or call 01246 239289.

Mr Potato Head might even appear! 28
