Intro If you want an excuse to celebrate a day this month there are some great ones to try ...

Hi and welcome to our May Edition. Again, it's been a busy month getting out and about to bring you an edition full of exciting news and interesting views.

• World Laughter Day - 3rd May 2022 • National Bike to School Day - 4th May 2022 (this inspired me to get on my bike and write the article in this edition)

Thanks to Vicky Bell for the fantastic front cover, we chat with Vicky from Tilly Fudge Design in this edition. I had a great couple of days meeting up with Ricky, Mario, and Sharon from Pizza Pi, Qoozies and The Vintage Tea Rooms, three excellent eating venues that were previously situated across the town centre but have all moved to Vicar Lane to add the independent mix along Vicar Lane. It was lovely to learn about their businesses and how they are growing.

• National Doughnut Week - 7th May to 15th May 2022 • International Nurses Day - 12th May 2022 And if you find yourself at a loose end the sculptures in the park at Chatsworth are free and worth a visit! Have a safe month and we'll catch up again in May. Take care.

Cover Artist

icky Bell (Tilly Fudge) is this month’s cover artist. She is a hugely talented illustrator who specialises in wedding stationery and art. I caught up with her to chat about her illustration of West Studios, where the name Tilly Fudge came from and her creative process. This month’s front cover is a beautiful illustration of one of my happy places, West Studios, where Tilly Fudge, Defeye Creative, Unhampered, S40 and S41 Local Magazines all share a creative space. Can you take me through your creative process for the cover please? "Thanks Simon. I’ve loved doing it. I hand draw most of my work on Adobe Illustrator. I use a tablet with a special pen which enables me to use the computer screen as a piece of paper! Illustrator allows me to use different brush strokes, techniques and create anything really. For the West Studios one I worked from an image and worked to recreate it in my own style." Vicky started Tilly Fudge back in 2014 whilst on maternity leave with her second son. She had been working for eight years as a family support worker but was under threat of redundancy. So, she created a list of all the things she wanted to do and at the top of it was art and design. She studied Design at Chesterfield College and went on to study fashion design at Derby University. Tell me a little bit about Tilly Fudge? "The majority of the work I do is wedding stationery; save the dates, seating plans, invitations etc... It was a hard market to break into and is highly competitive. The couples need to trust the person doing the designs, and you need a track record to gain it. I’ve always loved stationery, and was forever buying pens as a child. It’s not just my job, it’s my hobby, my passion." My cousin and her new husband used Vicky for their wedding and had this to say;

Page 4

'Vicky provided a first-class, personal service from start to finish. We loved her designs, they were very, us! Sadly, we had to rearrange our wedding several times due to, you know what, but Vicky was very understanding and accommodating. We’d highly recommend paying her a visit at West Studios.' Where did the name Tilly Fudge from come and has anyone ever tried buying fudge from you? "It’s what my mum used to call me when I was young! It’s just a pet name and I went with it for the business. Someone did try to buy some chocolate and orange fudge from me once, but I didn’t sell them any ha ha!" Who inspires you in the business or art world? "Holly Tucker, who created Not On the High Street. I'm looking forward to reading her second book. I've vowed to read more books this year." What's the hardest thing about running your own business? "It never leaves you! You can be sat there late at night thinking, shall I just reply to that email, maybe be I should do such and such...it's hard to switch off." What's the best thing about running Tilly Fudge? "The sense of achievement. Creating something special for someone and knowing it's just me, I did that and made someone happy." What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start their own business? "Streamline what you do. Do one thing, do it well, and keep it simple to begin with." Well, it’s clear Vicky does her thing well, and is making her customers very happy! Tillyfudge.co.uk Tilly Fudge Design tilly_fudge

est Studios is a creative event space and business centre that focuses predominantly on the digital, creative and community sectors. Set up through European Regional Development Funding as a creative project of Chesterfield College, West Studios has developed into a creative event space, gallery and shop. The centre houses 15 creative businesses and independent artists within six studio spaces, with even more businesses and artists joining our community as virtual tenants. Our gallery-shop sells cards and gifts from small creative businesses, mainly based in Derbyshire, Sheffield and South Yorkshire. The shop is an ideal place to find a card or gift for a birthday or special occasion. Our annual open exhibition returns in September and we are asking artists to submit their work for consideration. The exhibition is a celebration of art in its many forms, 2D & 3D work is accepted in any medium. Download an artist submission document from the exhibition section of our website.

Infirmary Records @West Studios Words: Simon Paterson Over the last few years Chesterfield College has been on a mission to offer it’s students and customers the latest in tech, media and now music! Martyn Stonehouse, their commercial engineer, invited me for a tour of the facilities and a tech run down in the brand new, state of the art recording studio. The first thing I noticed about the recording studio is the size of it. I’m fairly confident you could fit S Club 7 in (showing my age!), and still have room for a brass band! The studio itself comprises; a traditional classroom space with a suite of Apple Macs with the relevant software for editing and producing, a control room equipped with a state-of-the-art mixing desk and the most exciting bit, two soundproofed, acoustically engineered live rooms! "The live space is big enough to facilitate large ensembles, yet welcoming enough to cater for solo acts. It covers the full range of what people want to do and expect from a top recording studio. It’s brand new, has been acoustically designed and we can’t wait for people to start booking with us," says Martyn.

The College hopes the studio will attract local artists and bands as it is open to the general public for advanced bookings at very competitive rates. "The money the commercial side generates will enable us to keep up with the ever-evolving technology in the industry, enabling college to offer a great music programme for the students and the best equipment and experience for any bands and artists using it to record their future number one albums!" Martyn goes on to say. When you book the Infirmary Record studio, not only does it come with all the tech, bells and whistles you get Martyn's 20 years' experience as a sound engineer. "I’ve always been a huge music fan and my tech journey started around the age of 12 at Donut Creative Arts Studios. By the age of 18 I was qualified and went on to run their music production studio, workshops, live nights and mini festivals. I’ve worked with a broad spectrum of artists and I am very much looking forward to working with a lot more in the new studio here." Whether you are a community project, the next Stormzy, Arctic Monkey’s or Wet Leg, Infirmary Records is the perfect place to start or continue your journey as a recording artist. icar Lane is a major hub for Chesterfield shoppers, and as a managed retail space is perhaps a little unique in the way it supports Chesterfield’s independent business community.

importance as they would a major high street name and putting deals in place to help them afford the high street units. It’s also encouraging that these two, plus Qoozies, have all relocated to Vicar Lane from smaller premises in the town centre.

The centre is spread across, Vicar Lane, Steeplegate and the carpark on Beetwell Street. Vicar Lane has 33 units, including four larger ones, at present only three of the smaller units are vacant, and the additional fourth big one. What is really encouraging is that ten of the 29 units are independent businesses, that’s over a third of the retail units!

Sarah was keen to point out that through the pandemic many businesses had to close their doors, but the landlord kept rents low to help businesses survive.

I’m having a quick chat with Sarah Bowler (Tenant & Community Liaison Manager) at Vicar Lane. "The landlord is really helping small businesses take space in the centre,” she explains. "It's the first UK shopping centre the Landlord has acquired. “We have been supporting pop-up’s to enable businesses to take space in the units at heavily reduced rents, in a single monthly payment. "The pop-up’s are available on 6 or 12 month terms, with the aim of businesses establishing themselves sufficiently to be able to take on a longer term contract. "Clarissa's were previously trading on the market place and outside on our streets as a mall exhibitor. Due to the success of their buisness, they've been able to grow and take on a shop in the centre." The recent additions of Pizza Pi and The Vintage Tea Rooms show the commitment the centre has to independents, treating them with the same Page 12

Vicar Lane also benefits from an outdoor space, St James' Square, the area at the junction of Vicar Lane and Steeplegate, beneath the large screen. St James' Square has been home to several events, including film showings accompanied by Salute pop up bar, where 150 plus people sat down to a fab evening of outdoor cinema. The space has also been used for other pop-up events and offers an ideal location, due to the organic footfall it achieves. "The landlord is really supportive of the events," Sarah adds, "and recently took part in a free parking initiative on selected days when other businesses offered up to 20% off etc to encourage people back into the centre". It’s clear that the team at Vicar Lane are working hard to create and support an interesting mix of businesses and make the area a pleasant and interesting place to shop and dwell… did I mention the free WiFi coverage? So read on and meet Pizza Pi, Qoozies and The Vintage Tea Rooms, three of the food based independents at Vicar Lane.

Pizza Pi

I

n 2017 two friends invested £2,000 in a trailer onto which they built a pizza oven and Pizza Pi was born. One of these two chaps was Ricky Marples and five years on Pizza Pi have opened their new premises on Vicar Lane - from trailer to high street location with 18 staff in five years, not bad. What’s even better is Pizza Pi do a fab pizza! “We make all our own dough and let it prove for 48 hours and everything we do is fresh. It’s what gives our food such great flavour," says Ricky, "and the new venue is the perfect location in which to relax and enjoy our food, we like to think of it as street food with a roof!” Ricky was in sales before setting up the business and jumped ship simply because he wanted to be his own boss responsible for his own fortune. Pizza Pi's first premises were perhaps a little tucked away on Beetwell Street but quickly became the go-to pizza place for many, but like so many businesses, all was going well until the pandemic struck.

Ricky was quick to adapt, they had always offered a takeaway service and simply took to social media to tell people about it. “I have to admit, although COVID created its problems, we were able to operate our delivery and collection service throughout lockdown, as we still do today,” says Ricky. “We picked up many new customers and they are now calling in and eating with us in our new venue.” “We must also thank the team at Chandlers Bar, who accommodated us in their courtyard whilst we were between premises. We cooked there for a few months over winter, it was cold, hard work but again we kept our customers happy with deliveries and collection.” Today Pizza Pi have joined several small independent businesses on Vicar Lane, where you'll find them below the big TV screen opposite H&M. If you like your pizzas give them a Call. I’m can be sure you’ll enjoy their great independent street style food.

Qoozies

Q

oozies is eight years old and after moving to new premises on Steeplegate in 2017, have become one of the family of independents on Vicar Lane where the have created a loyal following. Mario Lanza opened Qoozies in a small unit on the side of the Market Hall in 2014. “I simply saw a gap in the market,” he explains. “Most of the food offerings in town were either the large fast-food chains or smaller outlets where the menu was a little limited, you know, breakfast baps, bacon, sausage, ham and cheese sandwiches etc. “I thought, I can offer a real alternative – healthy options and smoothies. I know if you look at our social media people tend to share our sweet treats, which are very good I’ll admit, but we have a wonderfully tasty range of breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches and salads plus our shakes, smoothies and juices.” Mario’s journey to Qoozies is like so many others, simply frustrated working for others he wanted to be his own boss and start afresh. “I grew up in

Page 14

Italy in Calabria,” says Mario. “Life operates at a different pace there. Life revolves around food and socialising; the UK is getting there but we still have a long way to go to create that Italian vibe." “I think what we do at Qoozies is working, and if things don’t work, we stop them and add new choices, it’s been great seeing our menu evolve in this way.” So what would you choose from the menu I asked. “The Ollie Burger, chicken, cheddar and caramelised onion teamed with an Energy Boost smoothie, bananas, strawberries, grapes, yogurt and honey.” This was my first-time meeting Mario, and I’d agree that he's created something unique, plenty of healthy options but you can still have a ham and cheese or an English breakfast sandwich, a wide choice and something to please everyone. If you’ve never called in, it's time you did! You can feel the comfort of a healthy option, or you could just go with a sweet treat, an Oreo Chocolate spread pancake perhaps? Enjoy.

Vintage Tea Rooms

S

haron Hilton started working at The Vintage Tea Rooms eight years ago at the old premises on Beetwell Street, today she owns the business in the purpose built café on Steeplegate.

"Cakes are so important to us that we are delighted to have recently added Liza Bakes to our business and now own and run the business from the bakery upstairs in Vintage Tea Rooms, making delicious cakes and scones to order.

Sharon has always worked in the food industry, working in development, production and chef. It was as a chef that she started at Vintage Tea, then five years ago the opportunity arose to purchase the business, which she did, and was starting to enjoy being her own boss when COVID struck!

"Liza Bakes have always supplied us and when the opportunity came up to purchase the business I jumped at the chance," says Sharon.

The doors closed throughout the first lockdown but when things started to open up Sharon took advantage of the small business support to relocate to Steeplegate. The new business opened in March 2021 and has seen customers new and old enjoying the traditional food on offer. "I spent five years working in Spain," says Sharon. "It taught me to turn orders around quickly. The Spanish have a passion for food, they expect high quality and want it quickly too. "When we moved in this was an empty white box," Sharon explains. "Our decor is now something a bit more ‘Vintage meets Industrial’, the bespoke staircase was commissioned for the building and we’ve created a space that’s cosy and relaxed.

The Vintage Tea Rooms also has an upstairs function room which can be booked for baby showers, christenings and other intimate celebrations. "I’d also mention that we’ve held our prices and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future," says Sharon. "Prices are rising for us all but we are keen to soak up the increases and continue to offer our products at the usual prices." Seems like you have no excuse not to call in! The Vintage Tea Rooms - another great locally owned and run addition to the independent food scene in Chesterfield.

"People refer to Vintage Tea as their safe place, they feel comfortable with us and know the atmosphere will be relaxed and welcoming. It’s lovely to hear that people think of us in that way, and we’re always happy to chat with them." The menu on offer at Vintage Tea is traditional; scones, afternoon teas, hot and cold sandwiches, English Breakfast, all day brunch and salads. Their breakfast menu is extremely popular, served until midday, when the Afternoon Teas take over. They also have all the usual hot and cold drinks and a very reasonably priced takeaway menu. The thing people love at Vintage Tea has to be the range of delicious cakes, they always have a mouth-watering selection available.

Business Intro

Meet: MeatMyBBQ Words & Images: Paul Chapman

From pastime to small perfectly formed indy business, MeatMyBBQ is just the sort of business we like to talk to at S40 Local … and even better, eat with! Seb is the driving force behind MeatMyBBQ, a business that will deliver recipe kits and the ingredients to allow you to impress friends and family with your BBQ skills! At the age of 16 Seb was working at Matlock Garden Centre as a Saturday and later as a department head, responsible for garden furniture, including Barbeques. "I attended six form at school which meant I could work three days, after school I did an Open University degree which allowed me to also work full-time.

"I'd be sent on courses run by Weber BBQs to equip us with the skills to use their products, I found myself really enjoying this. I was surprised at the range of food you could cook on a BBQ, apart from meats, they can be used as a standard oven to cook more or less anything, including deserts, brownies and cookies," explains Seb. So how did he get from this to his own business? "It was down to fate really; some friends knew I loved to BBQ, and when they threw a 60th birthday party decided they didn’t want to be standing cooking all evening and they asked if would cook for them!" This turned out to be a great day, people really enjoyed the food and started asking how things were cooked, the flavours used etc. In addition, the hosts decided to raffle Seb off! Well not Seb specifically but his BBQ services, they also raffled off ten runners up prizes that saw Seb cooking for the hosts with the runners up as attendees! As a result, people went off to buy BBQs for themselves. "By now I was working full time in a new career, but it reminded me how much I loved BBQing and chatting to customers about the pros and cons of different BBQs," adds Seb. The idea started to form, to establish a business that involved the love of food and BBQ cooking. "One day whilst cleaning up after cooking, I had the idea of creating my own flavours and selling BBQ kits. I started working with flavours and put together several rubs that can be used with meats to produce the perfect burger or steak etc." It then took over 12 months to achieve the necessary food hygiene certificates and put in place the logistics to sell items and keep them fresh. MeatMyBBQ use sorbafreeze together with a specialist packaging with a wool cool lining to keeps products fresh and at the correct temperature for 72 hours, making delivery possible.

Page 18

www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk

Seb was excited to receive his first order from someone he didn’t know, until then, most had been from family and friends. "It was great to get that first feedback, the customer loved what we did, and I was really pleased to know that all the hard work was starting to pay off," says Seb. Initially Seb is keeping thing quite simple with a small number of products available to order. He provides recipe kits for various meats, (beef, chicken, pork) including rubs and/or marinades. You receive the required amount of mince or meat for the recipe, the flavours and the freshly made rub, plus any other ingredients to accompany it. These are measured out so there's no waste, the ingredients are enough to make four burgers (seven to eight with the pork kit) and they arrive complete with a recipe card so you can follow the steps to become a BBQ master. All you will need to provide is a bread cob, some salad and possibly a drink to go with it ... oh and a BBQ of course! All Seb’s meats are sourced from Derbyshire so if you use one of our local bakeries for bread, farm shops or market stalls for veg, and a local brewery for a beer, you can have a spread that has travelled just a few miles!

"The recipes are really easy to follow and the whole family can get involved," says Seb. Whilst we chatted, Seb cooked up a Classic Burger with bacon, and a Southern Rub Steak which I was invited to try (perks of the job!), there was also a Caribbean Chicken which I didn’t get chance to try due to time. The burger was delicious, cooked perfectly and gently flavoured with onion, garlic, Worcestershire Sauce and Dijon Mustard, the steak had a bit of a kick, flavoured with paprika, chilli, cayenne pepper, cumin, coriander and garlic. The recipes cover various skill levels, whether you're a beginner or a pro wanting to try something different, and the MeatMyBBQ website has a selection of different rubs and BBQ accessories to get you going. So, if you’ve spent lockdown creating the perfect setting in your back garden in which to entertain, or you simply love any excuse to fire up the BBQ, give MeatMyBBQ a try and step up your BBQ game. www.meatmybbq.com

Bow Window Films Ltd

A new local business offering a specialist service Words: Paul Chapman Images: Bow Window Films Ltd

B

ow Window Films Ltd is a relatively new business established in April 2021 but evolved from a family business who have worked in the industry for many years, to expand and setup a small team locally.

Adam Bowler from Walton owns the business, Warren Hutton fits the films and Lauren Crampton runs their socials (pictured below). I know nothing about Window films, so I ask, what are they? “They are simply a thin film that can be applied to residential or commercial windows for one of many purposes,” says Adam. “The most popular use is solar control, to cut out the sun’s harmful UV rays, to stop fading furniture and help control temperature. “It’s like tints used in the motor trade but for architectural use. Many people use films to reduce the heat in conservatories or orangeries. Our standard Silver 20 is one of our most popular products, it reflects 78% of the suns energy so can prevent a south facing conservatory becoming too hot, it can cut out 99% of the suns UV rays protecting furniture from fading and reduces glare by 82%, eg: it reduces the glare from the sun.” Adam adds, “this is a really popular product and results in a much more pleasant light in a conservatory and helps control heat, compared to roof conversion or blinds which reduces light significantly and costs much more than our films. Prices start from as little as £130 installed and fitted, and a typical conservatory price is £400, but call for our special offer. “Our films are hassle free to have installed, maintenance free and cost less than roof blinds.” Your choice of window film is vast, you can choose a darker tint; reflective films that prevent people from seeing into your property - from the outside it

looks like a mirror. They also provide thicker safety films that provide privacy that also turns standard glass into toughened glass, so increases the security of the property. “Our security film creates a 'safety net' and holds shards of glass in place when impacted, like laminated glass in cars, it makes it safer for owners and reduces the risk of vandalism and burglaries,” says Warren. The work done by Bow Window Films includes players tunnels at top flight football stadiums, did you know they use a mirrored film on the inside so the players can’t see out? At Chesterfield's ground The Technique Stadium they have supplied film to the security tower, player entrance and boardroom at the ground. They have done museum displays and windows to reduce UV damage, Research & Development rooms in large corporations to stop people seeing the secretive work that goes on behind the glass and frosted bands around meeting rooms etc. One of the most impressive films was the switchable smart films that can be used on any fixed glass windows. These are clear when powered off but turn solid at the touch of a button to create complete privacy for your prorerty. Adam was keen to point out that due to their buying

power they are able to offer some of the most competitive prices for the switchable systems. Window films can be used in so many ways, garden room security, shed and garage windows, any number of commercial uses including decorative effects, logo designs on windows and they also offer architectural vinyl wrapping. “Our frosted film can convert clear glass to acidetch style privacy glass, for use in bathrooms and meets all the necessary planning permission rules," say Warren. "We can supply one-way contravision films, used to create a see through image, like they use on bus window adverts." “We recently installed heat reflective films in a large office to reduce the heat coming in, resulting in cheaper energy bills, as the air conditioning didn’t have to work so hard.” The more I talk to the pair the more uses of the films we discussed, so if you think there might be a window (or windows) in your life that could benefit from a film, give the guys a call for a no obligation quote and follow them on socials to see their latest installations. 01246 903902 www.bow-window-films.co.uk @BowWindowFilmsLtd

Cromford Mills An industrial first Words & Images: Simon Paterson

ust before the snow arrived (in March), we experienced a great British phenomenon known as warmth! This gave Bekah the wonderful idea of popping out into the peaks to make the most it.

Located less than a 20-minute drive from Chesterfield, lies the world heritage site of Cromford Mills. With independent shops and a café, and an occasional artisan market, Bekah thought it would make a cracking day out with the kids. She was right… for a change. Cromford Mills is situated in the Derbyshire countryside next to Matlock and is free to enter. Built in 1771 by Sir Richard Arkwright, it pioneered the engineering behind water-powered cotton mill production and is thought to be the first of its kind! Upon entry, we were greeted by the sound of whirring engines. There were several on display and it perfectly set the level of expectation for what was to come. Through the gates in the mill yard, you will find a variety of independent shops selling items from vinyl to cheese, which is great because I am a big fan of eating cheese whilst listening to music! We ventured into Countryside Books where I bought Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Paul Simon on vinyl and Evangeline almost purchased a copy of the Magna Carta, until I pointed out it may be a bit heavy going for an eleven-year-old, and do they have anything by David Walliams? Joking aside Countryside Books is well worth visit. We popped to the other side of the mill yard where Bekah bought a variety of cheeses and jams, all locally produced from the aptly named Cromford Cheese Shop. The cheddar with onion and sage went down particularly well.

Page 24

We grabbed ourselves a coffee from the delightful little café before venturing up the yard and into the visitors' centre. Here we learned how Sir Richard’s Arkwright’s cotton-spinning machine not only revolutionised the industry but led to cotton being Britain’s largest export! Sadly, we didn’t take the full guided tour because our four-year old prefers Peppa Pig to historical walks. After the visitor centre we headed over to the benches in the centre of the mill yard for a picnic. I devoured my usual wafer-thin ham on white bread sandwiches (keep it simple). Much to Bekah’s dismay Florie (aged 4) decided on the spot, she no longer liked ham and would be eating mummy’s cheese sandwich, which was odd because she didn’t like cheese yesterday! After the great sandwich debacle, I was able to sit and appreciate the amazing, perfectly preserved architecture and the sound of the waterfall behind me. The entire site is now grade one listed thanks to the Arkwright Society and my photos just don’t do it justice. After lunch we perused the Artisan market purchasing several bits from our very own Steph Mannion (Steph’s Sustainable Stuff) and Eva picked up a couple of Mother’s Day gifts. Across the road is the canal, sadly, we didn’t have time for a boat ride, but we did get to see some volunteers spinning yarn on a very old spinning wheel. It was very different to the yarns I used to spin my parents in the 90’s. We loved our day out at Cromford Mills and have no doubt we will be back before the end of the summer. Please do pay it a visit and support this important part of Derbyshire history. www.cromfordmills.org.uk

Brookfield News

…but is it really “normal”? Words: Eleanor Hayward, (Brookfield Journalism Group) Relaxation of restrictions has encouraged school life to return to the much vaunted “new normal” – with Years 11 and 13 working hard towards their GCSE and A level exams and Years 10 and 12 students revising for mocks. However, students are finding time to get involved in other exciting projects. The Year 12 community has been raising money in a number of ways to donate to the Cornish-based Monkey Sanctuary, the charity chosen by vote earlier in the year. Given events this year in Ukraine, many of the funds will be diverted to work being done by the Red Cross. The Charity Committee, a group of students led by Mr Cameron, organised what we have called “Monkey March” – a competition between the forms to see who could raise the most. Bake sales, head-shaves, sponging teachers and students were among the fund-raisers. It has been wonderful to see so many already incredibly busy students make the time and effort to work on this together. Sixth Form tutor Mr James said: “They’ve just got on with it. It’s been a great opportunity for them to show their work ethic and willingness to volunteer.” Always an important part of sixth form life at Brookfield, the hard work and willingness seen throughout Monkey March raised more than £600, with form 12DJ raising almost a third of this total.

Dancing in the Sleet? Words: Brookfield Journalism Group

March went out like a lion* when, despite snow and hail, Brookfield students presented an evening of seasonal delights at their Spring dance showcase at the end of last month. The evening celebrated the plethora of dance activities taking place at the school, including examination work and extra-curricular clubs. The majority of the evening was choreographed by the students, and it was a joy to celebrate their creative talents with them. Students have also been developing their technical skills backstage, providing lighting and sound for the event.

*Folk law referring to the weather 'in like a lion, out like a lamb'

With this show we bid farewell to the A Level class of 2022 and wish them every success in their future careers, both on and off the stage. Dance teacher and show curator Alison Carter said: “The dancers and I would like to thank everyone who came to support the event and would encourage others to attend future shows.” We look forward to welcoming you to the Summer Showcase in July, where once again our performing arts students will demonstrate true Brookfield resilience and commitment to excellence. Time to get the hiking boots out and stroll out for some fab views of Chesterfield. The walk starts in Holymoorside and is a fairly strenuous 4.3 miles (including the stretch to Highfield House Farm). It's quite boggy underfoot with stepping stones so perhaps nopt one to do after heavy rain! Plus you can have a pint at the start of finish (The Bulls Head or The Lamb) or take in a bite to eat half way round (Highfield House Farm, Tyzacks at Stanedge Golf Course or The Red Lion). There is plenty of on street parking in Holymoorside village but please be considerate. From the Bulls Head, cross over and walk up Loads Road to the Lamb Inn, continue up the road, past Chander Hill Road on the right, once the houses start to thin out you reach the Old Star Cottage on the Right. Take the signposted bridleway (1) Opposite. Pause as you climb to admire views over to Chesterfield and the crooked spire (2). As the wall ends you can see Highfield House Farm, your hilltop destination (3), continue straight ahead on the main path with a fence on your right, which again becomes a wall (4). Follow this path, take a look behind and see if you can spot the spire (5). You start to descend through trees, at a junction of paths, stay ahead with a fence on your right and continue to reach the road. Turn right up the road for a short distance and then go left at a footpath (6) to descend through a wood where you will reach a footbridge (7) over the river. Cross the bridge and follow the path up through the woods past the old abandoned pumping station (8) on the right.

Please Mention S40 Local Magazine

Continue on the path crossing a stream using the stepping stones (9), continue uphill to cross the same stream. Pass through the gap and follow the path with the wall on your left (10) to a gate to reach the farm buildings. Continue up the drive past Stonehay Farm to reach the road. This is your half way point - if you would like refreshments, turn right a short distance along the road to Highfield House Farm and Café. Peak Edge hotel is left along the road. Please take care this is a busy road. To continue the walk from the path from Stonehay Farm turn left along the road for a short way and left down to Stanedge Golf Club (11). Follow the drive to the clubhouse, continue past Walton Hay Farm (12) through the second gate and across the golf course to reach a footpath sign by a wall (13), turn left, with the wall on your right. Cross the small bridge, follow the edge of the green and the woods to reach a sign ’public footpath to Holymoorside’ (14) pointing right through the woods. Head down through the woods (15) until you eventually reach a gap stile (16), go through and drop down to a track. Turn right at the track towards the farm buildings, make a left turn following the fence towards the trees, cross the stream and follow this path, staying on the lower track with the wall on your left (17), through a gate and past the pond, through the gap stile (18) and straight ahead to the road. Turn left along the road to return to The Bulls Head. Page 35

Business Intro

Healthy Living and Yoga A COVID Journey

It was hard and without realising it was building a resilience muscle that I didn’t realise I had, one that would be used extensively during the COVID pandemic.

Words: Annie French

The internet was very intermittent during our stay, and we had been without any connection for over a week. When the divine signal came back, the world had changed. The course was cut short, urgent changes to flights were made to try to get back home, as the world started to close down. I managed to change my flight for the next day, changing at Dubai where all flights were being cancelled as I arrived. Luckily flights to the UK were still flying and I arrived back home the Friday before the UK went into Lockdown.

I

n February 2020, I found myself waiting outside Chennai Airport in South India. After ten years of studying Art, I needed a change and needed time to come to terms with my losing my Mum. This all coincided with breaking my arm and hitting another milestone birthday. Yoga has been part of my life for over 40 years, I often played around with the idea that one day I would teach yoga. I plucked up the courage to book onto a 200-hour intensive teacher training course. Not really believing I would teach, it was just going to be a month in India, sorting my head out and doing a bit of yoga! How wrong was I? Standing outside in the blistering heat, waiting for the pick-up to take me to my new home for the next month, I met some fellow teacher trainees. Two Geordie girls, having a quick last cigarette behind the one and only cold drinks bus outside the airport (a comedy film waiting to be written). I was not prepared for what was awaiting me, after a 4-hour bus journey with seven strangers we arrived at a house in the middle of nowhere and an hour’s drive from the nearest town. The daily routine consisted of a 6am alarm call for the first shower of the day, at 7am a one-hour meditation class, at 8am the first hour and half yoga class, 9:30 breakfast, and the first lecture at 10am, sitting in the shade on a hard floor until lunch at midday. The afternoons were of a similar routine, another lecture, another yoga class, evening meditation, homework and then collapsing into bed at 10pm.

Since then, I feel like I’ve been living in Zoom land, finishing a three-hour exam and qualifying as a yoga teacher. I absolutely fell in love with teaching, and over the last 18 months I have gone on to complete a 300-hour teacher training course with the Intelligent School of Yoga. I have worked with the wonderful Katie Dickinson, who was my teacher for many years, teaching together on zoom. We raised money for several Chesterfield charities; Junction Arts, Ashgate Hospice, the Elm Foundation and supported a group of Chesterfield lads raising money for Papyrus. I would like to say, as we come out of this pandemic, and things return to normal, but I’m afraid things have changed for us all. Never has our health been so important to us, staying fit and healthy is now my mission. My teacher in India, predicted that there would not be enough Yoga teachers in the world, to support people with the stresses of life. We have some great yoga teachers in Chesterfield, check them out, its not all about being flexible and tying yourself up in knots. There are many different styles, but most yoga teachers work on the basis of bringing the mind, body and soul together to live a balanced life.

Healthy Living with Annie French It all starts with a pose and a thought and expands into a never-ending path of selfdiscovery and growth. I value each and every person who joins my class, and I look forward to helping you achieve your wellness goals.

Bike To Work Day (Not Fri 20 May!) Words & Images: Paul Chapman

H

as anyone noticed the price of fuel creeping up recently? No? OK, you’re clearly extremely wealthy and you might as well skip this article… but maybe you want to do your bit for the planet.

The rest of us, can’t really miss it … £1.78 for a litre of diesel. I drive a van which I use to distribute the magazines when they come back from print, and filling it up is starting to hurt. Add to this cost of energy, rising food prices and everything else we’re being hit with and life is starting to feel expensive... and did I mention it’s costing me more to print S40 Local as well! If you’re anything like me, you're being really annoying at home, turning lights off all the time, shouting up when the shower has been going for more than five minutes and you’ve secretly turned the heating down! Sorry family.

One thing I do for pleasure is cycle, I might have mentioned it in the past . However, it’s for exercise, for a bit of escape, some time to switch off and take in a bit of off-road adventure, I tend to stick to trails away from the roads where I can. Well, this week all that's changed, I’ve started using my bike for short journeys that don’t involve me taking anyone with me. The commute to the studio (four miles each way), nipping to Adam’s Happy Hen's for veg and shopping (1.5 miles there and back), going to see a new client (typically within five miles), Londis for emergency chocolate (1.2 mile round trip)… you get the gist of it. Today I nipped over to Alpkit in Hathersage (not on my bike) to rummage through their box of reducedprice bags and stuff upstairs and came home with a 20L pannier for £20, not bad. I used up my birthday vouchers (thanks to my sister-in-law) and purchased a pannier rack, and there I have it, £55 and I’m loaded and ready to carry whatever I can stuff into my new bike bag! A bit of maths. My van does 33.1mpg, a gallon costs £8.10 … sorry what, a gallon costs EIGHT POUNDS AND TEN PENCE! I need to lie down! It’s costing me 25p a mile, that’s without considering, buying the van, VED, insurance, tyres, servicing, 'Paul & Nicola' windscreen blind, fluffy dice etc, phew!

my bike to recoup the cost of the kit... just 28 trips to the studio and back. Taking this further if I’d bought a new bike for £350 (the average UK price), at todays fuel prices I’d need to do 1,400 miles to pay for it, but who knows where fuel prices are headed - better get prepared. If you’ve stuck with me so far, thank you. I know cycling on busy roads can be daunting but there are lots of quiet cycle paths away from the main roads, some of the paths are pretty unusable after any rain if you don’t want to arrive at your destination looking like swampy, but there are some new sections of key infrastructure planned that will hopefully support greener more sustainable travel. In general, it’s pretty good and the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign have a useful map showing these routes which is a great help. My commute to the studio just has the top section of Chatsworth Road to ride and share with the traffic, once in Somersall Park there are dedicated paths and quiet roads all the way to the studio, I reckon about half a mile of my four-mile route is on busy roads and I’m confident that wherever you need to go, you could plan a quieter route. If you’re keen but not feeling confident, there is the County Rider Scheme. This scheme provides free one-to-one cycle training to people aged 18 or over who live, work or study in Derbyshire. The great thing about County Rider is that the programme can be tailored to suit your needs. Your instructor will design the programme to suit you whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced cyclist who wants to become an even better rider. They’ll provide up to four, two-hour sessions to help you stay safe, feel confident and travel independently. If your bike needs replacing, there are government schemes that allow you to purchase a bike tax free provided you are a PAYE employee. See Bike2workscheme.co.uk. If you’re short of funds and want a bike, Monkey Park have a selection of recycled and refurbished bikes at very low prices to help people obtain their own transport, and if you have a bike but it needs repairs, check out Dr. Bike in Queens Park each month where they carry out repairs free of charge. Friday 5 August is Bike to Work Day UK, so loads of time to get ready for this, or you could pretend you’re stateside and aim for Friday 20 May which is the US date, this way you’ll get an early start and be able to enjoy some Summertime commuting! Give me a smile as you pass.

The cost of my new kit / cost per mile = £55 / 25p = 220 miles. Therefore I need to ride 220 miles on Please Mention S40 Local Magazine

Hockey Heroes

ockey Heroes is a national incentive, delivered by local clubs to promote physical well-being and has an interesting ‘Super Hero’ twist. Steve Lord from Chesterfield Hockey Club will be running the England Hockey course for children ages 5 to 8 based out of St Mary's High School, Newbold.

Words: Steve Lord Images: Chesterfield Hockey Club

"We ran our first Hockey Heroes sessions earlier in the season and had 21 attendees for the eight week course, which was very enjoyable for the kids and our coaches!" says Steve. "19 of these children have stayed on and are now actively involved in our junior hockey sections. The next event will start on the 18 May and so we are keen to spread the news and offer places to local children." www.play.englandhockey.co.uk/ hockeyheroes The Chesterfield Hockey Club was formed in 1899 and they are currently based at St Mary's High School where they have a very active youth set up (120 junior members) as well as eight adult teams (male and female), one development team, two mixed teams and one veterans team. They have players in the club ranging from five to 65 years of age! Steve explains, "as a local club, run by volunteers, we are constantly looking to engage with our community and Hockey Heroes is a fab way to get children involved in a great sport." "Although Hockey Heroes is a national initiative run by England Hockey, we are hoping to get kids playing sports, and in the longer term playing hockey for the junior then senior teams! "We hope that the newbies that come along will be in our senior teams in ten years time... you never know!" If you want to know more, the clubs socials etc are below and there are two direct contacts, Steve and Paul who can provide more info. Garden Tips

GARDEN TIPS

Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts

B

eing in the garden on any sunny day in May has to be one of life’s best experiences; the sun has real warmth and all around plants are shooting up. But a cautionary note: it’s still possible for there to be overnight frosts, especially in slightly more exposed areas, so be cautious about putting out anything tender, or be prepared with some improvised shelter - it won’t need to be particularly robust as any frost will be light. The upside is that frost will only happen if the sky is clear, which makes for wonderful mornings… As potato shoots appear do not forget to ‘earth up’ the growing shoots. This serves two purposes – young potato shoots do not like frosty weather, so cover over the shoots with soil for protection, and it also helps to avoid young tubers from turning green with sunlight exposure. Thin out raspberry shoots and prune gooseberries. As always, the idea with this sort of job is make an open framework with an even distribution of fruiting stems all getting a good supply of sunlight and air (often easier said than done). Lots of more tender vegetables can be sown now: French and runner beans, courgette, cucumber, pumpkin and squash as well as cauliflower and purple sprouting broccoli for harvesting in winter - they like a long growing season. Towards the end of the month, plant out summer bedding plants. These are available from garden centres but are often displayed earlier than they are sensibly planted out, so, if tempted, keep them in a shady place (protected from frost) and well-watered until they can go into the open garden. If you’ve already sown tomatoes and courgettes inside, they can now go outside. As upright (cordon) tomatoes

Page 50

grow, keep an eye open for any side-shoots that form in the angle between the main stem and branches and remove them. Towards the end of the month, seeds for both can be sown directly into the ground. Prune spring-flowering shrubs after they have finished flowering and remove any growth damaged by frost from evergreen shrubs. Check variegated ones for any where the leaves have reverted to plain green and remove those shoots completely. Sow peas outside now with pea sticks in place early and prepare supports for any other plants (e.g. climbing French and runner beans) that will need them later. Lawns will now need regular mowing (use the clippings as a mulch) and keep on top of the weeding. Hedges will need clipping, but check for birds' nests first, and if you’ve been feeding the birds in the winter, don’t stop – current thinking is that you should do it all year. It's that time of year when spring bulbs are now beyond their best, but as they fade the tidy gardener can't resist the temptation to 'tidy them'. Once the flowers have faded you can cut the head off the flower if you want to, don't cut back the leaves until they are completely yellow, and don't tie them up either, the leaves need to continue to produce chlorophyll (food), the leaf needs exposure to as much light as possible, the bulb needs the energy in the leaf to be reabsorbed into the bulb ready for next year. Once your leaves have completely withered your bulb is now dormant, so you can lift them if you need to thin them out or move clumps that are too big to new areas, they don't generally need feeding they're very self-sufficient. Keep sowing salad crops (radishes, spring onions, lettuce etc.) and herbs (parsley, coriander, basil etc.) for regular harvesting.

Music The club has been a huge success, running every month since May 2012 until February 2020, when all live music had to stop. Some activity happened in early Autumn 2020 when the club was granted permission to live stream two concerts, only to be plunged into lockdown once more.

Chesterfield Jazz Club Rising From The Ashes Words: Paul Chapman

I

n March 2020 when the pandemic struck, Chesterfield Jazz Club had reached its 8th year. It began at the ex-Miner’s Welfare on Chester Street, later moving to the Olde House in late 2019. At the same time, the grand piano which had been played every Saturday in Chesterfield Library Theatre for Andrew Marples; Saturday concerts was acquired for the sole use of the club. “Every ‘proper’ jazz club has a piano, and the best ones have a grand!” says Wendy Kirkland, originator of the club, who, with her husband Pat Sprakes, began running the club in May 2012, on a hot Thursday evening playing to a room packed with punters wanting to see what the fuss was about. Wendy explains “Our reasons for starting the club were twofold - firstly Chesterfield didn’t have a regular jazz club running the same way as Ronnie Scott’s in London was conceived - with a house band supporting visiting artists. Second reason, we are musicians, if we want a jazz club we need to be part of it. I don’t know a single musician who enjoys watching from the audience all the time. We don’t receive any arts funding, so we must rely on ticket sales income to pay our guests."

2021 saw more concerts, live streamed and in-person at The Olde House with Kirkland and Sprakes’ own band, Latin Lowdown Live, which had been awarded an Arts Council grant and later toured across the UK. 'Latin Lockdowns' project was a series of 86 live videos that Kirkland, a pianist and Sprakes, a guitarist and bassist began in March 2020 to entertain Facebook viewers. Intending to do ten or so, reaction from people on Facebook as far flung as Mexico and Australia urged them to continue. They finally recorded 86 different pieces of music, all rehearsed on the day. “We’d do a maximum of three takes and then post on Faceboo, people commented, saying they’d been waiting all day for our video, which was a ray of sunshine and made us carry on”, says Kirkland. “The series has had over a million views. I also think this is the reason we are now being offered dates at Ronnie Scott’s. We have played there four times since 2021, they liked the way we carried on despite lockdown. I really believe that series has been the best thing for our careers”. The club’s tenth anniversary is on 19 May 2022 where the raffle's funds will be donated to Alzheimer’s Society. Kirkland’s father, Robert, who was a regular at the club, entertained the audience on the piano during breaks, was a sufferer who sadly passed away in January 2021, a victim of COVID-19. “We had so many kind messages from our audience, saying they will miss Dad dearly and the club won’t be the same. He never got to play the new piano, which is very upsetting for me. We will always continue the club in his memory now.” The guest on 19th May is guitarist Edison Herbert, who was mentored by the great George Benson. His new hit album will be on sale on the night, and he will be accompanied by Wendy Kirkland on piano, Pat Sprakes on bass and Clive Loveday, the club’s regular drummer who has been there from the start. Edison and Pat will also be playing some guitar duos, always a popular format. Before lockdown hit, Pat had his own guitar duo series Two’s Company, which he will be resuming shortly. “We feel like it’s time for a new beginning”, says Kirkland. Tickets are available from www. ticketsource.co.uk/wendykirkland or from the Chesterfield VIC, priced at £12.50 for adults and there’s the option of paying by cash or card on the door - £5 for under 18s.

League 2 football next season? Words & Images: Michael South

Welcome back my fellow Spireites. Sitrep. The league title is out the window. Injuries are still a huge concern. but at least the playoffs are still on…aren’t they?

could only manage a 1-1 draw in front of the cameras, so just one point earned there. It was ironic though, that it could have been three points for CFC if Whittle, Chesterfield's only goal scorer on the day, hadn’t then given away a needless penalty which cost us the two points.

At best, aiming to stay in the playoffs is the only realistic goal for the Spireites this season and that will take winning games outright to achieve. Given recent results, the limited games left this season and the less-than-ideal run of form since Cookies return, we should count our blessings to be even still in the playoffs in my opinion.

Ongoing injury crisis.

Since last month's article most results haven't gone the Spireites way. Hence the title being out of reach now. The only win since the Boreham Wood game (at the time of writing) came when Maidenhead United paid us a visit. It took 76 minutes for the Spireites to make their mark after Asante was subbed on in the second half to score and take all three points. Next up was an away trip to Altrincham which was, to be fair, just pure bad luck for Chesterfield. It ended with us losing 1-0 due to an average long-range shot hitting a divot in the turf just in front of Scott Loach and deflected over the diving keeper and into the back of the net. That was three points gone. Next up came Notts County away which was live on BT Sports. This time we

As I pointed out last month, when Whittle scores the first goal of the game, Chesterfield have had a player subbed off due to getting injured. There was Tshimanga and then McCourt a short while ago which has played a massive part and added to Paul Cook's player selection problem. Well, it happened again. During the Notts Co game (after Whittle scored) Grimes left the field injured in the second half. This does leave me thinking. If I was a Chesterfield player and Whittle scored, I’d ask to be subbed off to avoid injury and pain. I joke of course. No, I’d just wear bigger, thicker shin pads. Depending on where the Spireites finish in the playoffs this season will determine if we play an extra playoff game or not. Finishing in second or third place we would only have to play one playoff match to get to the playoff final, a total of two games. Whereas if we finish the season in fourth, fifth, sixth or seven place, we will have to play two playoff matches to get to the playoff final,

www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk

so three games in total. As we already have many players out injured, it would be ideal to finish in second or third place in the league come the 15 May. This would reduce the minutes on the pitch needed to gain promotion. With Tshimanga, our top goalscorer out till next season (still the National League’s top scorer with 24 goals I may add), we will need to rely on our limited and tired players to score the goals to secure Chesterfield FC League Two status next season. That is a tall order. Will Paul Cook run the risk of playing half fit players to help with the promotion hopes at the final hurdle? Is Paul Cook doomed to follow in Jack Lester's and John Sheridan’s footsteps by returning to a club and failing to achieve what was expected of him based on his past success at the club? If Cook doesn't achieve promotion this season you could argue it wasn't his team of players or his own squad that failed, it was James Rowes. Next season, be it in League Two or the National League, Cook will have an opportunity to mold his own team from scratch and ship in new players and release others who aren’t in his longterm plan. Yes, currently there are limited players with a tight budget. There were also no players brought in by the end of March's transfer deadline. But should Cook have brought in any old player just to say he has signed someone? Afterwards Cook said he's not going to sign any players just for the sake of it and for me, this is a wise move. It follows in the Trusts ethics of the club's money management plan. The club's accounts did show last month that Chesterfield FC made a loss of £400,000 in income due to the Covid global pandemic as no gate receipts and the hospitality were affected. Fortunately, however, at the club’s AGM, a £1 million investment from two local Chesterfield businessmen was announced which will significantly help in the club's future. So, with just over six weeks left until the last game of the season, will Chesterfield be in the playoffs fighting for that second placed promotion spot? Watch this space… COYB’s!!!
