Intro Hi All

We hope you are well and coping with the social distancing, with homeschooling, working at home, on the frontline as key workers (AKA 'Heroes') and with your response to the Coronavirus outbreak in the UK.

S40 & S41 Local have decided to hold print until we can be sure it's safe for our deliverers to be out and about. We've also combined the editions temporarily in this online edition. Simon (S41 Local editor) and I hope we can get back to normal as soon. Much of this edition was put together prior to the instruction to stay at home and we're hoping you might read these articles and remember the local independent businesses when they are back to work. Most have been forced to close down, but when things get back to normal, they'll need your support more than ever. The next step, now this edition is online, is to pull together a directory of local businesses that can support you and the local community through this difficult time.

We'll do that online, and if possible provide a copy you can print out and share with a neighbour who might have limited digital access. We have some fabulous local businesses who are adapting what they do to deliver in this difficult and changing environment. Many people will be aware of some of the businesses, but I'm hoping it will be time well spent to list all the businesses in one place. Difficult times can bring out the best in people, let's pull together, be an inspiration and bringing out the best in Chesterfield.

And from all the community thank you to our key workers, there are not enough words to express our gratitude. Most importantly, stay in doors, stay in touch, stay safe, stay well and stay positive. Paul S Chapman & Simon Paterson.

Hard Times Words: Paul Chapman Image: Adobestock

'Hard Times' was a track by The Human League released in 1981. The first real impact of the seriousness of the Coronavirus changes hit me when Heaven 17 cancelled their gig I was due to attend at Sheffield City Hall. Two of the founder members of The Human League were set to perform Reproduction and Travelogue, the first two Human League albums.

This is where it started to sink in, before any government restrictions had been made, whilst we could still live our normal lives. Week two of restrictions and our movement is restricted, schools and businesses are closed ... it's a strange life - but it goes on.

So, what can we do? Act responsibly is my suggestion, adhere to the advice from government and do what we can to remove the load on our NHS heroes at Calow and other community hospitals. This might be in ways we never thought, for example, we're still allowed to exercise but I'm cycling indoors now!

We've left out the What's On and Regular events as the rules say we're not presently allowed to meet but there are no shortage of ways to fill out time. PE with Joe Wicks, dance with Oti Mabuse, sing with Gareth Malone, all accessible through Youtube or Facebook as well as many local heroes entertaining us. So, who can stay open? The list from gov.uk (correct as of 25 Mar) includes, Supermarkets and other food shops, food delivery and takeaway, health shops, medical services, pharmacies and chemists, petrol stations, bicycle shops, hardware shops, veterinary surgeries and pet shops, corner shops and

newsagents, off-licences and licenced shops selling alcohol, including those within breweries, laundrettes and dry cleaners, Post Offices, banks, building societies, short-term loan providers, credit unions and cash points, storage and distribution facilities, including delivery drop off points, market stalls which offer essential retail, such as grocery and food, and garages and repair shops.

What is encouraging is the number of businesses who have adapted their trading model. Restaurants who have to close their doors offering delivery or takeaway services, breweries doing delivery, people collecting from Londis and dropping off to those classed as vulnerable or self-isolating, people volunteering to support the NHS, people sharing positivity and love (thanks Simon).

We ask that you support those who are still operating or doing something different, many smaller businesses have seen a massive increase in demand. AND WHEN THIS IS ALL OVER PLEASE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT SMALL INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES. There is room for all businesses.

Last point. This is our 11th Anniversary edition... yes, it's 11 years since the first S40 Local dropped through your letterbox. I never expected two things, one to be still going strong after 11 years and two... to be going online only and stopping print! And why the cute goat? In strange times like this - if it makes you smile, why not?

George Stephenson (1781 to 1848) Phil McDonald from Defeye Creative pays tribute to one of the country's most influential industrial innovators... and who happened to reside in Chesterfield. Words Paul Chapman Illustration: Phil McDonald, Defeye Creative

A

dorning our cover this edition is George Stephenson, an illustration created by Phil McDonald from Defeye Creative, and in honour of one of the area's most famous residents.

Stephenson also built the first public inter-city railway line in the world to use locomotives, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which opened in 1830.

An early success, Stephenson designed the miner's safety lamp, a lamp that would burn in a gaseous atmosphere without causing an explosion.

Perhaps not so well known is Stephenson's, cucumber straightener. A keen fruit grower, he ordered blown glass cylinders to be made for his garden at Tapton House, where he spent the last ten years of his life. The elongated glass funnel was placed over the cucumber at an early stage to encourage the fruit to grow straight.

Stephenson, born on 9 June 1781, was a British civil and mechanical engineer, known as the "Father of Railways", he's a great example of the Victorian desire for improvement in the industrial world.

A rail pioneer, Stephenson's railway work was amongst some of the most important developments and inventions of the 19th century and key to the Industrial Revolution. He (and his son Robert) built the Locomotion No. 1, the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line, the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.

Stephenson's chosen rail gauge, sometimes called 'Stephenson gauge', was the basis for the 4 feet 8 1â „2 inches (1,435 mm) standard gauge used by most of the world's railways. Stephenson's Rocket was an early steam locomotive, built for and winning, the Rainhill Trials held by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in October 1829. Page 10

George Stephenson moved widely around the country pursuing his career in rail, living at Alton Grange (now part of Ravenstone) in Leicestershire until 1838, when he moved to Tapton House in Derbyshire.

Stephenson is buried in the grounds of the Holy Trinity Church, on Newbold Road. A plain memorial slab is positioned in the floor of the sanctuary and the stained glass window at the east end of the church was erected by his son Robert Stephenson. Remade In Britain Ingman's Shoes have closed their doors but behind the scenes, away from the retailing of quality shoes and clothing, they are adapting. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Andrew Ingman

F

or a while now Andrew Ingman has been promoting his postal shoe repair service, he’s been organising pop up shops in banks in the city, he’s been talking to quality brands to become an authorised repairer and he’s been promoting the business in the online world. And it started to pay off.

However, right now the shop doors are closed and he’s one of many small business owners that are extremely worried about the future. Imagine you’d just placed an order for almost six figures for your winter stock for 2020/21 and then you’re forced to close your business. Staff need paying, rates and services need paying, then the supplier says, ‘no you can’t cancel your order’. What do you do?

“Walking away from the order is one option. If I take the order and can’t pay it, you’d think the stock would be better with the supplier to re-sell rather than with me who has no income and can’t pay it, and to be honest it would force me to lock the doors permanently and walk away from the premises. “If I do survive, walking away from the order creates more problems. The supplier has some of the best quality leather soles available and I will only use these products in many of my best repairs. They are a fantastic product. Cancelling the order will jeopardise my supply of materials”, explains Andrew. “My house is against the business and the way the business is set up I wouldn’t qualify for any of the government grants or loan schemes. It’s a very scary time for me, my staff and my family.”

Continued Page over 15

Business

Andrew has had some ups and downs recently.

“Then this week I received a pair of shoes to repair”, says Andrew. “It lifted my spirits, there are three more to come and the repair on the first pair will be almost £200, my first pair of Graziano & Girling shoes from a Saville Row tailor.

“Call me a shoe geek but these are fantastic shoes to work on and I have to admit I’m pretty chuffed with the repair I’ve done. It’s the small things, if you take a pair of Loakes, they stitch the soles on with seven stitches per inch, the Graziano & Girling shoes are nine stitches per inch, not everyone has the ability to stitch this close. I sat back and smiled after hitting every hole spot on, perfection.” A way of resolution for the sole supply issue above might just present itself right here in the UK though. “Whilst I have been shut down I have used the time to research British made products and discovered the last remaining oak bark tannery in Devon and they produce what looks like a product of equal, if not better quality than our current supplier, I’ve asked for some samples so am hoping they are as good as they look.” So, within a couple of days there is a glimmer of hope.

Andrew is not just looking at losing his business but also his home, yet faced with this he is adapting, looking at how he can change, he wants to survive, no; he needs to survive. There are almost a million small businesses facing similar issues to Andrew at the moment and right now it’s our job to look at how we can support them. It’s never been more important, but I already feel that a ‘Remade Britain’ will look very different to today’s landscape and if people all have Andrew’s desire to succeed, I’m sure we have reason to be optimistic for the future. SHAPE

The Sports, Health Activity and Physical Education Team is helping get our children into SHAPE Words: Paul Chapman Images: Paul Chapman & India Hollingworth

S

HAPE, previously the School Sports Partnership (SSP). You might be familiar with the work SHAPE do to get children in Chesterfield’s schools involved in sports and physical activity.

In September 2019 they became the SHAPE Learning Partnership, combining activities for both Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire SSPs. Based in office space at Brookfield, I caught up with India Hollingworth to see what’s planned for 2020. India has been in the post almost a year, after completing her degree at Leeds Beckett University in Sports Development.

“I worked with the team over the summer 2019 and came back full time in September,” says India. “It’s a busy team as we now have responsibility for activities in 46 primary schools, two special needs schools and 11 secondary schools, I don’t know the exact numbers but there are in excess of 20,000 children in our catchment”. India runs the competition and events calendar, she helps support and run the festivals and competitions they hold. A typical week would involve a timetable of Early Racer events at Netherthorpe supported by young leaders, Mini Basketball finals, a Hockey festival and two more Early Racer events. “In some weeks we can see over 1000 children. There are six of us in the team of which two members work solely in primary schools helping teachers develop PE to make it a better offer.

“Schools have volunteer students who get involved in a mini-leaders program, we often use the mini leaders to help support us at events. This gives the volunteers in schools the opportunity to develop leadership skills,” explains India. SHAPE aims to work with its member schools to improve the lives of all young people through their involvement in PE, school sport, physical activity and health-based interventions.

They are the only official delivery agency in the area for School Games. The School Games is a programme designed to keep competitive sport at the heart of schools and provide more young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best. Funded from central government and affiliated schools, they have been providing this level of support to schools for 15 years.

Health

PROJECTS Chesterfield’s, Beat The Street, unfortunately came to a finish for safety reasons once lockdown came into effect. SHAPE are involved in the health and wellbeing group as part of the council and helped contribute to the project. SHAPE are one of seven approved partnerships in Derbyshire to deliver the Bikeability program to school children. Central government has agreed that it is essential bike safety and skills training is offered to every child in England and is expected to spend £2.4 billion on cycling and walking from 2016 to 2021.

“Affiliation gives schools the option of school games and brings with it many benefits to being part of the wider team.

“We cover all areas of health and wellbeing, active mind is a mental health awareness program, not everything we do has to be physical. We work with the bronze young ambassadors each year, like the mini-leaders, this program uses volunteer students from the County's primary schools to promote sport in schools, the same children take place in a conference at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

“It’s great to see the young leaders at this event, they discuss topics which include active travel, health, food, wellbeing, media and from this take a plan back to school to consider how they get children at their schools more involved in sports and activity. “We are also looking at ways to introduce physical activity in such a way that people are not aware that they are doing it! It’s about getting people to take part, it’s not about winning but about inclusion, ways in which to include everyone”, says India.

India was keen to outline that “the role is such a ‘me job’, all the team feel the same, we’re all passionate about getting people involved in sport and activity. It needs innovation and interesting ways to get young people into sport, it’s a constantly changing environment, we never stand still and are always looking at how we can adapt and change what we do now to suit today and hopefully, the future.” “Our links to local sports clubs are evolving and we want to create many opportunities for young children.” If you want to learn a little more about the team and what they do check out the website shapepartnership.co.uk

Acupuncturists are trained to use subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined for thousands of years. the focus is on you as an individual and not just your illness, and all symptoms are seen in relation to each other. Treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to affect the flow of your body’s qi, or vital energy. *British Acupuncture Council

“I’ve always been interested in health and Eastern philosophy, tai chi etc. ” explains Robin, “and when, in my 20s, my Mum’s tennis elbow was treated with acupuncture, that really sparked my interest.” “Acupuncture seemed to fit with my interests and beliefs, so I researched courses and found a college in Leamington Spa that offered an authentic course rooted in the Classical Chinese theories, that was almost 25 years ago.” Robin now practices Five Element Acupuncture which, together with the theory of Yin-Yang, forms the basis of Traditional Chinese medicine theory, diagnosis and treatment. The five elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water show how our internal organs, systems and structures are categorised and connected. In practice the five elements Robin applies are acupuncture, herbs, dietary therapy, body work (muscles) and exercise (Tai Chi). The elements consider the whole person, not just physical wellbeing but the mental and emotional wellbeing associated with any symptom, illness or sickness. “A person arrives with a set of symptoms; I look at the person as a whole and assess their potential for health. Treating them and then ideally keeping them well so they don’t get sick in the first place” outlines Robin. “Often modern medicine doesn’t look at the complete picture, the body, mind and emotions. We all make choices that become habits. I look at what people do day in day out, things that are not conducive to health, by changing some things, we can see if they make a difference.” How do you treat people I ask? “There are two main treatments, needles and moxa, dried mugwort, a herb much prized in the East, that is burnt on points on the body. “The two used together, effectively bring warmth to promote blood flow, helping build vitality and vigour. “The needles are extremely fine, 0.16mm thick with copper handles, conductive, they are used at points in the body, up to a dozen in a treatment. By use in the correct meridian lines they access the interior of the body, they can be used to treat a vast number of symptoms; stomach problems, anxiety, over thinking situations, acupuncture is often used to treat the electrical pathways in the body that can become blocked. “Many acupuncturists use acupuncture treatments themselves; it’s used to promote a long and healthy life, the ideal is if you live to 90 for instance, you have 90 years of good health and a short final illness. “People that come to see me tend to be of a certain mindset” explains Robin. “They are open to alternative medicines; they acknowledge that they want to make a change and look after themselves.” So who should come and why? “I can help treat almost anything, acupuncture can be used alongside western medicine and other alternative therapies.

Page 26

“It’s important to mention that you don’t need to be ill to come. It’s a great way to relax and relieve the stress of modern life, it might just be a case of a more complete you, it might become just one of the coping mechanisms you employ to enjoy a long and healthy life.” I enjoyed my chat with Robin, nutrition and exercise are important to me and my family, and although I don’t currently use acupuncture, I can definately see how it would fit alongside our lifestyle. If you are wondering, just give Robin a call to arrange a chat, his google review reads ‘Without doubt, the ultimate professional’ what more could we possibly add!

Odyssey Greek Restaurant A taste of the mediterranean on your doorstep Words: Simon Paterson Images: Monkey Business Solutions

W

henever we walked past the Odyssey Greek Restaurant on the corner of Knifesmithsgate one of us would always comment how nice it looks, peeking through the windows at the traditional Greek setting awaiting its soon to be happy customers.

So, having worked two full-time jobs whilst raising two children in 2019, I decided it was time for Bekah and me to have a ‘proper’ Valentine’s night out at a classy restaurant and I booked us a table for two at 6pm on the 14 February. I then pictured all the brownie points awaiting me as Bekah took her first bite of halloumi (she always orders halloumi). After what seemed like a lifetime to wait (five days) it was Friday the 14th February. The kids were at the grandparents and we were on our way to the Odyssey Greek Restaurant. Upon entry we were greeted by a big smile from a young lady who opened the door for us, asked us our names and showed us to our table. Looking around it was like we had stepped through a teleportation portal and landed in Athens! From the beautifully crafted bouzouki hanging on the wall to the authentic tables, chairs and framed pictures of the culturally rich Mediterranean country, it was clear to see the restaurant wasn’t just somebody’s business, but their life and passion!

The restaurant had a warm, communal feel about it like we had been there many times, despite it being our first visit. The place was full of positive energy, a complete contrast and a great break from the miserable weather outside. Just what we needed on a rare, child free evening!

Food We were quickly handed our menus and wasted no time in perusing them. Spoilt for choice and true to form we ordered the grilled haloumi with fresh tomatoes and a balsamic glaze. The halloumi had a strong savoury flavour, a creamy texture and salty notes. Perfect. On to the main.

I was torn between the Greek meatballs and the pork souvlaki (pork skewers), so I asked the waiter which one he would order. He opted for the latter. He was right to do so. The pork skewer arrived on a white and blue traditional plate accompanied by a homemade, Greek rice recipe. The pork was tender and carefully seasoned with a special recipe. I made short work of the main! Bekah ordered the prawn skewers. I know she enjoyed them as she didn’t speak for the whole ten minutes they were on the table and the plate was spotless when the waiter came to collect it! For dessert Bekah ordered a coffee as she was full from the generously sized starter and main. I, on the other hand, never miss an opportunity for dessert. Her life expectancy is far higher than mine! I opted for the Kormos which is Greek word for ‘tree log’ and is named after its shape. Kormos is a mixture of biscuits, butter, cocoa, milk, sugar and a bit of brandy. Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top. When it arrived, I knew I wouldn’t be eating this alone! Bekah shared what was the perfect end to a fantastic evening at the Odyssey Greek Restaurant and we look forward to going back very soon. By the way, we also had a bottle of Greek fizzy wine, don’t tell the kids. odysseychesterfield www.odysseyrestaurant.co.uk

Local mortgage advisers, SMH Residential Mortgages are here to shine some light on the mortgage application process, and how using a specialist adviser can be a lot more cost effective than a DIY job.

Brookfield News

Brookfield News The latest community update from Brookfield Community School Edited by Brookfield Journalism Group

An Eco Friendly School

Lesotho Race Night

The Environmental Group is constantly trying to raise awareness within the school and members are not afraid to get their hands dirty for a good cause. This group of students actively removed recyclable materials from the classroom and ensured that they were correctly disposed of - just one of the steps that the students are taking to enable recycling within the school.

They also organised a bake sale that raised money to fund recycling bins that would be distributed in classrooms. On top of this, members of the group have been holding assemblies during Environmental Week to raise awareness of the pressing issue of Climate change: a vegetarian day was held to demonstrate that cutting back on eating meat was possible. The current goal of the Environmental Group is to implement measures that encourage students at Brookfield to think about the impact of climate change, that therefore promote recycling and make the school more eco-friendly. Text: Amelia Hardwick

As part of the school’s fund-raising for the Lesotho project and its host charity Africa’s Gift, a race-night was held in February, the perfect prelude to Valentine’s Day. Tables representing staff groups enjoyed an evening of race-related fun, with owners and jockeys for horses in ten races having been arranged in advance. “We entertained guests from the Brookfield community such as teachers, the BPFA and other people who bought tickets,” said Year 12 student, Sam Whitehead, who helped at the event.

The race night was held in the main hall and students including Sam helped the people make bets and ran bets to the main table. “There was a simulated horse race that people bet on and if they won they would earn a share of 50% of the winner’s pot,” he added.

Stone-baked pizza was made available for guests, with local independent company Pizza Pi being very charitable: “They cooked pizza for everyone and donated all their proceeds to the charity.”

“It went very well, everyone enjoyed it, there was a lot of shouting and everyone was getting involved, the total take on the night was somewhere around £1700 I believe.” All the money raised will go to Africa’s Gift and to support projects for sustainable living in Lesotho, including the use of “Wonderbags” which help to reduce waste of heat, fuel and resources in cooking. Student Roles in Mock Trials The school is celebrating after 13 students took part in a regional competition in March, at South Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court in Derby’s historic Courthouse.

The Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition is a national active learning project organised by The Citizenship Foundation, an independent charity which helps young people to engage with their community through education.

The Competition involved a team of students taking on the roles of magistrates, lawyers, witnesses and court staff to prepare a specially written case. Schools compete against each other in a live format at a real magistrates’ court. The team, comprising Year 8 and Year 9 students, rehearsed over a number of months, supported by local magistrates and members of the legal

profession. The competition was tough, with the Brookfield team enjoying the day but not able to pip the winners to progress to the next round.

One of the magistrates, John-Charles Tanner JP, said “What a privilege and pleasure it was for us to work with your students. We understand from the adjudicators that there was very little to choose between the four runners up.”

Hope remains in the shape of the Year 8 Court Artists and Reporters who will now submit their entries to their respective competitions, based on images and events in the court proceedings. Text: Nick Davey

Brookfield News Guys and Dolls, 2020 The Brookfield stage was recently illuminated by the annual show - this year being “Guys and Dolls,” and in all honesty, I loved it (a bushel and a peck.)

As always, the performing arts department presented a theatrical delight, following several months of hard work and long nights rehearsing. From comedic moments peppered throughout the show to tear-jerking songs, “Guys and Dolls” was yet another spectacular performance and an asset to the school. With its vibrant mix of New York

f

gangsters, unlikely romances, and salsa dancing which transported the audience into the middle of Havana, the show this year was definitely one of a kind. The several students and teachers and anyone involved in the show, whether it be with the incredible set, music or tech, once again put together a musical comparable to that of a West End production, receiving an abundance of praise, and even selling out for the Saturday night. glazed windows, UPVC conservatories, composite doors and more recently orangeries.

Thirty-eight-year-old Linacre entrepreneur, Lee, runs the business alongside his long-term girlfriend, Michelle from Walton.

Lee openly admits he is no salesman and during visits he simply advises potential customers on the best products for their home and leaves them a free, no obligation quote.

ocal couple Lee Miller and Michelle Joyce are the brains and the brawn behind Chesterfield based firm The Window People.

Founded in 2016 by Lee. He bought himself a van, registered as self-employed and set off on a mission to provide fantastic customer service and great products at an affordable price. Mission accomplished Lee!

"Me and Michelle live and work together in harmony haha. Seriously, we do make a great team. Michelle handles all the office stuff brilliantly, which I’m not a fan of and I handle all the installations, ensuring the highest standards are met," says Lee.

“Orangeries are proving a very popular addition to our range, and like all of our products they are backed by a ten-year guarantee. They are an all year usable room with a bit of the wow factor. Our products are manufactured locally, keeping money in the local area and are ‘A’ rated energy efficient”.

If you would like Lee to pop round for a chat and a cuppa, then call The Window People on 01246 900981.

Lee saw success early on in his business adventure and expanded the company quickly. Having met Lee in person I have no doubt his outgoing and friendly personality played a huge part in his early success. With him out in the field everyday chatting to customers and leading on installations.

"Running a business in Chesterfield is great as it’s a town on the up. In many ways it feels like living in the big city, but with a community feel about it. The people are always so friendly, and we get a lot of our work through recommendations from friends, family and previous customers”."

The Window People’s expansion has created jobs in the local area, now employing two fitters and two apprentices. Lee has over 20 years' experience in the industry and is happy to be able to pass on his expertise to the team. "Being able to employ local people and offer apprenticeships to the next generation is important to me and something I never dreamed of when I bought my van back in 2016. I have a great team behind me and hope to create even more jobs and opportunities in the future, passing on my knowledge and skills along the way," Lee goes on to say, "over the years The Window People have expanded their product range installing double Page 48

As fresh As a Daisy Pram cleaning, resotration and refurbishment Words: Simon Paterson Images: Anna Higham

F

ormer teacher and local mum of two Anna Higham is the ‘mumtrepreneur’ behind As fresh As a Daisy pram cleaning, restoration and refurbishment. Anna started her venture around six months ago after leaving the education sector and was ready for a new challenge. Scrolling along on social media (as most of us do) she saw a pram for sale at just £10.

"I was browsing one day on an online marketplace, saw a pram for sale and thought 'I can do something with that’. Looking at the pictures I was sure they didn’t tell the full story, but for £10 pounds it was worth a punt. I went ahead and bought the pram. I was right, it needed quite a bit of work doing to it, but I was willing to put the time and effort in, learning some new skills along the way. Upon inspection I could see the handlebars needed recovering with leather, all the plastic needed buffing up and restoring, and the fabric required some stitching and a bit of TLC. I set to work right away and sometime later (quite a lot of time) it looked like new! I was really happy with the work I had done and was able to sell it on for a profit. It was at this point I thought ‘this could be a really good sustainable, environmentally friendly business’ and ‘As fresh As a Daisy' was born".

Before

After

Anna moved to Chesterfield 13 years ago with her husband Kevin. She worked as a Teacher educating children in the nursery and reception years and loved her time with the children.

"I really enjoyed my time as an early years Teacher. At this age they are still amazed and excited by the simple things in life. I knew I was ready for a fresh challenge and wanted to build something of my own. I do miss the pupils though, well, most of them anyway haha". Page 50

www.s40local.co.uk

Being a mother of two herself she was all too familiar with how worn out, damaged and tatty pushchairs, strollers and child car seats can get overtime.

"Pushchairs, prams and child car seats are so expensive these days, some costing well in excess of a thousand pounds! It makes sense to look after them and have them serviced every now and again and repaired if they break. We have a tendency in society to throw things away if they break and buy a new one. There’s a big push to reduce, reuse or recycle and my little business is doing its bit to help with that". Anna buys all her supplies from local, independent ventures like herself and is a big fan of our high street. "I love the fact you can just pop into the town centre and pop out again! I’ve lived in cities before where it’s difficult to do that and venturing in the centre is a big job! My favourite shop has to be Fred’s Haberdashery. They have such a wonderful selection of products and I

pretty much get all my supplies from there. It’s important to me to support other local businesses and keep money in our local economy. Starting my business has led me to be more mindful of where I spend my money". Anna works from home and it’s clear she enjoys what she does. Her services start from just £2.50 and she sells restored, good as new prams from as little as £50.

"For many families buying a new pram simply isn’t affordable. I love being able to offer less well-off families top branded prams such as Silver Cross and Mamas & Papas for as little as £50! If you are thinking of throwing your old pram away, don’t! I can bring it back to life and make a local family who can’t, or don’t want to, spend hundreds of pounds on a pram very happy." At S40 and S41 we just love Anna’s little environmentally friendly company, and we are sure she will be ‘pushed off her feet’ in no time.

Garden Tips

April Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

By the time you read this it should be properly spring and noticeably warmer. We've had a generally mild winter which lots of garden pests will have survived, so keep an eye open for them. On the plus side, there should be lots of appropriate predators, as well as more birds to add their song to the dawn and evening chorus. 1: If you haven't already done so, plant all seed potatoes, they are traditionally planted on Good Friday, but with Easter being mid-April means that remaining maincrop varieties should be planted by now. Remember that most varieties are frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero.

2: Lots of vegetables (as well as many annuals and herbs) can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, radish, parsnips etc.) and can go direct into the soil, but that may depend on if you’ve had the chance to prepare the beds for them. There's still a chance of late frosts - never sow into frozen soil.

3: If you’re not confident about growing things from seed there will be lots of seedlings for sale in garden centres, once they're open again! However, they will have been raised in a very benign environment and won’t appreciate going straight outside, especially if it’s chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don’t keep them in a heated house.

4: Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover; tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres but they can be quite expensive for what you get, plus it’s far more satisfying to grow things from scratch. If they need watering it is better to stand the trays in shallow water until the surface of the soil appears damp, spraying from above can flatten the delicate seedlings. 5: If you are planning a new strawberry bed this year now is the time to save a space and dig in some organic matter such as manure to give these productive fruit crops a really good start. Think about ordering some strawberry plants or runners to be planted next month.

6: Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can’t produce enough or haven’t got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertiliser spread around above where their roots will be, and gently forked in – don’t overdo it and damage the roots themselves. If you only have a little compost, either reserve it for your hungriest plants or use it to cover a thin scattering of fertiliser.

7: As the days warm anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth starts to sprout.

8: If you have fruit trees or shrubs their blossom may be damaged by frost, so try to protect them; this is more important for things like apricots or peaches, which are more vulnerable. Larger trees will to some extent provide their own micro-climate so will suffer less damage (depending on the severity of the frost), and can be left to take their chances. 9: Lawns should be growing faster now, so may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first, and rake the surface. Protect any newly-sown areas from pigeons. 10: There isn't a month when you shouldn’t be weeding, but it’s much more important if the weather is mild! Page 54

Business Intro

Ginspired

Another great new, independent business in Chesterfield's Market Hall. Words: Paul Chapman

I

feel like I’ve been on a tour of local businesses over the past few weeks and the next stop of S40 Local’s virtual bus was Ginspired. Based in Chesterfield’s lovely Market Hall it’s a newly established independent business, you know the ones we love at S40 Local. If you like a gin with a difference you’d better call in as they will definitely have something to wet your whistle. And it’s not only gins, they have a fantastic selection of fine Irish and Scottish whiskies, Caribbean rums, bourbons, craft beer and real ales. The business is owned and run by Darren and Matt. The pair met in a craft ale business Matt had set up, Daz would call in for a beer to catch up and strangely he found himself calling in quite frequently, a friendship developed, and new ideas were discussed.

Next stop Buxton. Matt saw premises that would give him the opportunity to open a Craft Beer and Real Ale store. It was here that Matt refined his model store and The Beer District (great name that) has been successfully serving the residents of Buxton since November 2018. So successfully, that it’s developed into a well respected small business, so if you’re ever in Buxton …

Darren came in as business partner and left his career in print to help run the store. The pair have been driving across to the far side of the Peak District for a while and started to look a bit closer to home for a business that would make the commute some days a bit shorter. “The unit in the Market Hall is a gem of local spirits and a growing collection of ales” enthuses Daz, adding “there really isn’t anything like it in Chesterfield.” “The majority of our gins and beers are all sourced locally, the whiskies and bourbons come from further afield, whiskies from Scotland, bourbons from around the states. Page 58

“We have a great range but if there is something particular you’d like, we’ll do our very best to source it. If you like a particular flavour or taste, again, let us know and we’ll serve up a few options for you that you may not have tried.” Whilst I chatted to Daz, one or two regulars called in and took away new spirits to try, Matt aware of their likes and clearly delivering products that will be certain to go down well.

As well as being there to support people's love for their spirits, Ginspired is a great place for gifts, a local gin from the Rhubarb Triangle for mum’s birthday perhaps? There is a sample range to suit all paletes so there is the opportunity to check before you buy (please be aware this does not apply to everything!). “The local connection is important to us, the botanicals in many of the gins are local, the water is local, it helps create some interesting flavours. “Rums are becoming popular, they outsold whiskey over Christmas which was a surprise but something that has led us to respond and seek out some great products to support this local demand.

“Our ales are all of great quality, bottle conditioned to ensure they are perfect when poured and from an ever-expanding range of small independents. “We get customers saying, ‘I’ve never heard of any of these’, and that’s exactly what we want to hear” says Daz. That kind of sums up what inspires Ginspired as I see it. A range that’s not the norm, is mainly locally sourced and will cater for all who call in. Please take a trip into town to check out Ginspired, when we return to normal.

Advertorial

Kip exam tips for English Language and English literature GCSE that every student should read! Our two key English GCSE tutors have kindly shared their main tips to help GCSE students get higher marks in the exam. If you use these revision and exam answering tips, it can make the difference of a mark or two and that in turn can move you up a grade as well.

Think about how you like to revise. Do you like to listen to music or is it distracting? Posters and things like Mr Bruff videos can help if you are a visual learner. Practice planning answers for the Big Beast 40 mark questions on the Language papers. A couple of minutes spent on a good mind map will pay dividends and will help with content and timing issues.

Margery’s favourite tips:

Julie’s favourite tips:

Make a poster. Detail characters, themes, plots and include relevant quotes to illustrate. Use different colours, sticky notes and arrows to make connections and explanations. Having a strong visual image can help when recalling information in the stressful exam hall.

Techniques for answering the ‘How does the writer use language?’ question:

Cards can also be used to detail the features examiners are looking for when asking specific questions. For example: when asking about the meaning of a specific word from the text, the examiner is looking for explanations of context and connotations. Tone is referring to the writer’s attitude to the subject and can include friendly, serious, comic and arrogant. Create revision cards with grammar terms, their meanings and examples. This helps with analysis of text. Pick two or three examples of complex punctuation and make a special effort to know how to use them. Jot them down as you start the exam and tick off as you use them. Examiners love the correct use of colons and semi-colons!

PETER paragraphs will help achieve a higher mark. Point, Example, Technique, Explanation, Response Timing: Don’t spend too much time on questions with lower marks! For example: English Language Paper 1 Qu 1: 4 marks – 5 minutes; Qu 2: 8 marks – 10 minutes; Qu 3: 8 marks – 10 minutes; Qu 4: 20 marks – 20 minutes. When writing your answers remember to vary the length of paragraphs use a variety of paragraph openers such as consequently, significantly, alternatively and vary sentence length. We wish you all the best of luck and if you think you could do with our help then contact Jo for a free assessment on: 01246 220224 or 01629 56611 .

History

Florence. A Machine. Words & Images: Inn Kinniburgh

Florence Nightingale lived from 1820 to 1910 and had local connections to nearby Lea Hurst at Holloway effectively the family's summer retreat.

On the 200th anniversary of her birth we have included a few lesser known facts. • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Page 68

Born to a very wealthy family, but fame and wealth meant nothing to her.

She nearly died in Crimea and was ill and bedbound for much of her life. At the age of 17 she nursed her family through a national flu epidemic. Shunned publicity - travelled back from Crimea incognito as Miss Smith.

On her return she walked alone two miles from the railway station to her home.

After the Crimean War she wrote a 900 page report for the War Office. Her proven influence was worldwide, UK, USA, Canada, India, Italy, Germany, Ireland, Finland, Egypt, Turkey, Austria & Australia.

Powerful organiser, a strict disciplinarian, but with a real sense of humour. Helped soldiers in Crimea to save and send money back to relatives in UK. A genius with facts and figures, and a member of USA Statistical Association Trained nurses who made an immediate impact throughout the World.

A “Nightingale” nurse successfully tended the 2nd son of Queen Victoria when he was shot in Australia in 1868.

Fluent in French, German, and Italian, she frequently visited these countries. She also met the Italian Garibaldi who helped unify Italy. Brilliant writer and wrote novels eg Cassandra, and a very good mimic www.s40local.co.uk

History

• • • • • • • • • • •

• • •

Involved with the formation of the Red Cross and Geneva Convention. Designed and advised on hospital construction throughout the World.

A huge impact in the liberalising of British colonial policy in India.

God “called her to his service” in 1837 but to what service is unclear.

She was a self taught expert and helped the poor and needy, as a teenager. Declined several marriage proposals and her parents opposed her nursing ambitions, but of course later relented. USA asked her advice on treatment of casualties in the American Civil War.

Single handedly created nurses as the professionals we know them today.

The first UK Air Ambulance (1933) was in Surrey and named “Florence Nightingale”.

To obtain his inheritance her father changed his name from Shore to Nightingale at age 18.

William Smith, Florence’s grandfather fought for the abolition of slavery in the early 1800s. He worked with Charles Babbage the founder of early computers and is this from where Florence learnt her mathematics? Her mother, one of 12 children, lived until age 92 and was nursed at her death by Florence. Perhaps her reforms laid the foundations for the creation of the NHS in 1948.

She battled for hospital cleanliness to stop infections - a fight that it is still being waged today, 200 years later!

The young ringers were nominated for the Sarah Beacham Youth Group Award, for youth groups who are successfully recruiting, retaining and developing young ringers, at an awards ceremony last Saturday. Coming highly commended, they were awarded a prize of ÂŁ200 to be spent on benefitting youth ringing at Old Brampton.

Ringing at Old Brampton will resume in due course, including lessons for any young person or adult who wishes to give it a try. For further information and contacts please visit facebook.com/BellRingingDerbyshire or bellringing.org

The young ringers take part in local and national ringing events, as well as enjoying ringing at Old Brampton and at other towers in Derbyshire.

As well as being fun, ringing provides confidence and builds teamwork and leadership skills.

A flexible approach to attendance allows the young people to persue other activities as well as ringing. Ringers from Old Brampton who are now at university enjoy the friendship and support of their university ringing societies.
