Copy date Friday 11th June
Hello and welcome to the June edition of S41 Local Magazine, we can honestly say we will never get tired of writing that. It's such a privilege to be able to write and design the magazine and we are eternally grateful to all our readers and advertisers. By the time the magazine drops through your letter box, Chesterfield will be 'open for business' and we couldn't be happier! As a family we are cautiously starting to make plans. We have Simon's dad's 70th at the end of May. He absolutely loves a Chinese so we have booked a table at Dynasty, indoors, for the end of May! Imagine that, eating indoors with family and friends, fantastic! Bekah turns 40 this June and we are currently looking at a number of 'getaway' options for around August time. It would be nice to take the kids somewhere with lots of activities as they have missed out on so much this last year or so... This edition has been very encouraging indeed. It's packed full of not only long standing Chesterfield based businesses, but some cracking new one's as well. We have the lip smacking Big Jim's BBQ Steakhouse just opened in Claycross. The Chesterfield Escape Rooms, based in the town centre, which Paul (S40 Local magazine) is giving a whirl. In fact, we haven't heard from him in a while... Molly Scott is back with her Derbyshire days out page and we have a three page interview with Gemma Worth accountant, radio DJ, charity volunteer, pod cast creator and author! This month's cover artists are local couple Jamie and Laurie and I am sure we can all agree they take a fabulous photo of our green and pleasant lands. We hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much as we enjoy creating it. Peace, love and positivity. Simon, Bekah and the kids. 07716 014002 simon@s41local.co.uk

Time for a bit of escape We catch up with Nick Hogan who's bringing a fantastic new experience to town, Chesterfield Escape Rooms. Words: Paul Chapman
N
ick Hogan is one Chesterfield chap that many people are very happy with. Why? Because he’s opening up Chesterfield Escape Rooms on 17 May and bookings are filling up fast!
eventually chose rooms that have been played by over 30,000 people in the UK.
“Trip Advisor ranks these games as the number one attraction in their towns, so we know the people of Chesterfield will enjoy their time with us. We aim to deliver a fantastic customer experience and put a smile back on people's faces,” says Nick.
So, what is an escape room? It’s a game in which a team of up to six players work together to discover clues, solve puzzles, and complete tasks in one or more rooms. The end game is to progress through the room to ensure you escape within an hour.
Chesterfield Escape Rooms is located on Soresby Street in the town centre above GHQ (Geeks Head Quarters) and Lily Pad restaurant. I caught up with Nick over Zoom to discover a bit more about his personal escape. “Despite the hospitality, tourist, and entertainment sectors being devastated over the past six months, I see a real need for family, friends and teams to spend some quality time together in a safe, clean, fun, exciting, and challenging environment,” explains Nick.
“Our intention is to reinvigorate a little bit of the town centre and bring to Chesterfield three new and exciting escape rooms, never seen before in this area.
Page 6
“We looked long and hard at the type of escape room we wanted to provide and
www.s41local.com
Sounds easy? For many they make it look easy, but our personal experience is very different, when, as a family, we previously visited a room in the Lake District, and have to admit to calling in assistance after becoming totally stuck on one clue! We did manage to escape but felt like we’d cheated the system, I really can see how completing a room without any external help must be so pleasing. Maybe next time!
Nick is new to the Escape Room world after spending a career in software sales and reaching a point where he was looking for a new focus. “I was spending far too much time away from home and family and took retirement in 2019. I relaxed, played some golf, trained as a tiler and did a few jobs before realising this didn’t mix well with my old sports injuries, then played a few local escape rooms and the seed was sown,” explains Nick. This is a long-term plan for Nick who is determined to make it a success. “We found a franchise operator that has been great to work with and started looking for ideal premises, we needed to be in the town centre, close to local hospitality

Business Intro and with parking close by. At the time the premises, containing The Geeks HQ and Lilypad was for sale, it ticked all the boxes and is now home to Chesterfield Escape Rooms.”
The Bank’ needs you to get back the family gold, ‘The Governor’ sees you and your team of paranormal explorers kidnapped when entering HM Greenslade Prison, and ‘Crazy Cat Lady’ needs her mischievous cats finding before she returns home. Can you complete the tasks in one hour and make it out?”
Nick was also keen to ensure the following local businesses got a mention who have worked tirelessly to get the rooms ready for the May opening; Abbotsbury Contractors, The Handy Pro Handyman and Services, Dalton Roofing, LGE Electrical Solutions, BRM Law, Destination Chesterfield, Derbyshire Alcohol Advice, JP Fire Safety Solutions Ltd, Indigo Hygiene, Dronfield Upholstery, Chesterfield Carpet Tiles and Nick also added thanks to anyone that has helped along the way he may have missed. Nick, in setting up the team, has worked with the Kickstart Program to offer important employment to local people. “It’s essential we support the local economy; and we have worked hard to find the right people for the positions. We’re excited to be a new addition to Chesterfield's cultural and hospitality sector. We’ve already established links with our neighbours and see Chesterfield Escape Rooms as part of a great experience,” says Nick.
So, after you’ve succeeded in your escape, call into the County Music Bar where Nick has established a partnership that gets you exclusive food and drink discounts on the day of your game (Note: you will need to show your game voucher), supporting and bringing together the nearby independent businesses.
The rooms are a franchise from successful Chelmsford based Know Escape who have designed and run their own games since 2016, and wherever they are, they are number 1 on Trip Advisor. “We’ve had our first staff training and people playing the rooms have come out buzzing. We have three rooms, Rob the Bank, The Governor and The Crazy Cat Lady which offer a choice for all, plus the option to revisit and complete each room in turn,” says Nick. “They’re family friendly, ‘Rob Page 8

FIRST HAND ESCAPE! As part of the essential staff training that Nick and the team have been undertaking we were lucky enough to be invited down as a family to sample thr 'Rob the Bank' escape room.
Nick and Annie (Nick's partner) were lovely, relaxed and friendly giving us just enough nudges to make us feel marginally intelligent, but without giving the game away entirely. We're no escape room experts, so the level of support offered was spot on. The aim of the room is to keep you occupied for your hour but also to ensure you have some fun and complete the room, and it certainly delivered for both of us on these counts! Our visit to the Chesterfield Escape Rooms came at just the right time, after a long lockdown it felt like a real treat to go out and do something together and have 'an experience' that didn't just involve another family walk!
It's clear that a lot of time and attention has gone into getting things right and if our visit was anything to go by, you can be sure of a fab time, what was also evident were the procedures they have in place to ensure they're operating a COVID safe environment. It was lovely to see the kids really get involved, take control and solve the clues. Thanks to Nick for bringing the Escape Rooms to Chesterfield, we even called in at Pizza Pi on the way home to pick up a takeaway! We're hoping to go back to try the other rooms at some point soon!

The Coppermill Workshop Meet Ross Clark, master craftsman Words: Simon Paterson Images: The Coppermill Workshop
L
ocal man Ross Clark has always dreamed of turning his passion for woodcraft into his fulltime occupation and with the support of his wife Sarah, that dream is finally becoming a reality. Ross, better known as The Coppermill Workshop creates beautiful, bespoke pieces of furniture out of up-cycled wood and copper. Ross's environmentally conscious products are all handmade in his workshop in the evenings and at weekends.
"I've been wanting to make the jump to working for myself for a while now and with orders coming in and the business growing, I'm pleased to say that from the end of May I will officially be working fulltime on my own venture," says Ross with a smile. With everyone spending a lot of time at home recently, Ross has seen an increase in orders for many of his products, particularly those related to alcohol. Fancy that!
"My hand-crafted wooden, garden wall bars are proving extremely popular and are my biggest seller. They are a bit of a talking piece when entertaining and some of my customers have sent me some great photos of them in use. They really took off when the Daily Telegraph featured one of them."
The Coppermill Workshop Sheepbridge Chesterfield T: 07568308099 Page 12
Ross has turned his hand, very successfully, to make a variety of home-ware pieces such as shoe racks, bedside tables, shelves and has even made a wall-mounted trophy stand for a boxing glove. So, yes, he does take requests and is always up for creating something unique, personal and special for his customers. Ross has been very mindful of where he gets his supplies from and believes in supporting the local economy, sourcing most of his wood from a company in Barrowhill, which he stains in a variety of colours including granite grey, lightly steamed beech and silk grey.
"When I first started, I tried using varnish, but it didn't give me the high-quality finish I was looking for. Now I use a wax which not only protects the wood making it more durable but gives it a smooth, shiny finish, which I think looks great." It's was great chatting to Ross about this exciting new chapter in his life and I have no doubt one of his pieces will appear in our home very soon, or maybe on the garden wall outside (insert winky face here).

Go Wild
But go carefully and legally! Text & Images: Jamie & Laurie
Page 14
www.s41local.com
With restrictions on holidays and people looking for new adventures we were interested to read Jamie and Laurie's blog that they sent us. They share with us their trip to the Lake District, where you can legally wild camp in some places.
But if you are planning on trying wild camping please ensure you check out www.coolcamping.com for more info.
Y
ou may be wondering, can you camp anywhere? The general rule for wild camping is that you must have express permission from the landowner before you pitch up for the night. We always recommend that if you aren’t sure you’re in a permissible zone, you should check first, as you could be disturbing farmland or private property.
Wild camping is our escape and our way of feeling closer to nature, we feel wild and free, it’s a cheap and cheerful break for anyone who wants to get away from hustle and bustle of the rat race! We are Jamie and Laurie, a local couple with a passion for the great outdoors and photography, and we are super excited to share our adventure with you.
We planned our trip carefully and decided on a sunny Saturday to pitch on top of one of the mountains in the Lake District.
After checking the weather to make sure it was going to be nice, we set off on our adventure. We knew the top of the mountain would be the perfect place to watch the stars, the world go by and relax and unwind in nature. We packed two litres of water as the mountain is a steep climb and I pre-cooked a pasta the night before as carbs are a good source of energy and taste great cold. Jamie made sure we packed coffee (we cannot live without coffee) and milk in miniature tubs, we took our two man Gonex tent, two light weight regatta sleeping mats, Regatta sleeping bags and foil that goes under the sleeping mats to keep us warm during the night. If you are wild camping try and pack as light as possible, you don’t want to be carting a lot of equipment around.
We set off on our adventure at ‘silly o’clock’ from our home in Chesterfield so we could catch the sunrise at Derwent Water, and it
didn’t disappoint. We walked down to the Lake, no one was around, the world was still for a moment, just us with our cameras and a white silhouette appeared. It was a swan gliding in the mist so majestically. We were tired from our early start and long journey, but this made it worth it. We were mesmerised by its beauty against the backdrop and instantly felt at peace. We made our way to Great Langdale Campsite and the Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel. The hotel looked lovely, a traditional pub to stop in for a meal and a bevvy for anyone that loves pub grub. We parked up and rested realising the walk ahead of us would be a tough one, especially with 20kg on our shoulders, mine was slightly lighter, Jamie’s was the heaviest and he resembled a pack horse! The weather was fantastic, the sun was shining bright with just a slight gust of wind, perfect weather to walk in. The walk took us three hours. I would recommend walking poles as it is tough on the knees, it is quite steep, long and tiring especially if you have bags on your shoulders, but the views are stunning on the way up. You can see most of the Lake district from the very top on a good day, even better at night as there’s very little light pollution so the stars shine fiercely! We awoke to the sunrise, a burst of pinks and purples lit up the sky, it was a warm morning. We gazed on in awe…
When clearing our tent up we made sure there was no trace left to respect the farmers and the land. On our way down we had some lunch and watched the farmers herding their sheep with amazing skill and agility down the mountains with their sheep dogs. We were hot and bothered on our way down so decided to bathe in the flowing river to cool off. Refreshed and full of the wonders of nature, we laughed and began to plan our next adventure in England’s green and pleasant lands. This was a fantastic walk and to stop the night was even better. If you are planning on following in our footsteps, always remember to take a map and plan your route, wear appropriate footwear and clothing and have a great time soaking up the beauty of the lake district. Stay safe, Jamie and Laurie.

Cover Q&A: JL Photography Text: Simon Paterson Images: Jamie & Laurie
W
hen Laurie was loitering around the tuna sandwiches in the canteen at Chesterfield on a daily basis, Jamie knew there was something fishy going on, and he was right. It turns out she had taken a shine to Jamie who works in the catering department. So, Jamie asked her out and five years later they are the ‘picture perfect’ couple, known on social media as _jl_photography_ and we are pleased to feature them on this month's front cover. I caught up with Jamie and Laurie eager to find out what inspires them to photograph our beloved back garden, The Peak District.
Firstly, I just want to say how stunning your photos are, we (S41 and S40 Local Magazine) are very impressed and it was an easy decision to place one of your images on our front covers. The majority of your photos are taken in the Peaks, do you have any favourite spots that you can share with our readers? Jamie: We go up Snake Pass and to Lady Bower a lot.
Laurie: It’s really quiet and peaceful up there. The views are incredible. We also like going to Alport Castles, which is three large mounds that tower over the valley. From a distance they look like castles. Did you know that Tom Cruise is currently filming in Eyam?
Laurie: He’s been out filming in the Peaks before and the Yorkshire Dales, very cool! Were you both in to Photography when you met, was it a shared passion from the off?
Laurie: I always wanted to get in to photography, but never bought a camera because I didn’t have anyone to do it with. Jamie: I was in to it a little, but I only had a tiny camera, then Laurie bought something decent. Laurie: I bought one from CEX in town, nothing special, but from then on, we were out every weekend and loved it. It’s great that you both share a love for what you do, your Instagram page is fabulous. Laurie: We’ll have to do you a free print, Simon. That would be excellent, thank you. So, what camera do you use now?
Jamie: We both have the same cameras, the Cannon 6D Mark 2 which is why the photos look half decent! We are still very much learning; we learn something new every time we go out. Laurie does most of the editing.
Laurie: I enjoy the editing process and tend to use Adobe Light Room. I’m getting a lot better at it now, it takes practice and patience. Out of all your photos, which is your favourite? I suppose this is like asking a parent who their favourite child is, they all have one, but would never disclose that information! Laurie: We are really struggling with this one.
Jamie: The boat house at the Lake District is one of my favourites (shown over). It looks like you are in the middle of nowhere, with nothing around for miles, but you actually have a B road just behind you! Where do you recommend our readers go for the best sights in the Peaks? Jamie: Bamford Edge, you can see for miles.
Laurie: Baslow Edge for the Highland cow! If you are lucky, you may even see a hare! Jamie: The Ridge, Mam tor (shown) Castleton area, amazing views! Laurie: It’s not very popular there, good shout.
We have a three-year-old little girl, so give us a couple of child friendly suggestions, please.
Jamie: How about a day out in Bakewell and then you head down the Monsal Trail. It’s as flat as flat can be so very child friendly. I don’t suppose it’s only 100 metres long? I have problems trying to get her to walk to the car without complaining! Laurie: Haha, there are some nice coffee shops on the way! I’m sold! Last question; if you could travel to and photograph anywhere, would it be?
Jamie: It’s got to be Iceland, there are just so many different photo opportunities, beaches, glaciers etc. Laurie: Even the clouds are different, but not forgetting the Northern Lights. I bet every amateur photographer would love to photograph it! I really enjoyed chatting to you both and can’t wait to see your images in print in our magazines. I’m sure our readers will love them just as much as we do. See you in the Peaks! If you want to see more of Jamie and Laurie’s photos, or even buy a print, you can see them on Instagram (make sure you use the underscores).

KEEPING BUSINESS LOCAL
Business Intro
Meet Jim, Matt and some fabulous food. Words: Paul Chapman Images: BJBBQS
I
feel like I’m missing out on something this morning, as I sit down outside Big Jim’s BBQ Steakhouse in Clay Cross with owners James Fisher and business partner Matt Page, the beef brisket from the freshly stoked smoker smells great, just a shame it’s eight hours away from being ready!
Big Jim’s BBQ Steakhouse is the brainchild of two friends which came together after one simply said to the other ‘do you fancy taking on Charlie’s Bar in Clay Cross and opening our own steakhouse?’ “Once it was clear it was a serious proposal and not a joke,” said Jim, “I was in.”
Jim has been a chef for almost 20 years, he learnt his trade at Chesterfield College and like many chefs has worked his way around many wellknown local establishments before family life and kids arrived.
“Until now I’d worked in smaller restaurants and rented a kitchen in the barn at the Chesterfield Arms, until I started working for myself, I opened a sandwich shop, and we took on a catering van so we could do artisan markets, weddings, events etc. “I started to develop an American style, smoked brisket, pulled pork, ribs, fried chicken etc. I really enjoy these types of dishes; people love them and it’s so satisfying to be doing something people enjoy eating.”
I was enjoying what I was doing, but when the text arrived it felt as though the time was right for a change. The pair recognise the positive change that’s taking place in Clay Cross, an old mining town is now home to hundreds, if not thousands of new residents as the Avenue site is redeveloped and high-quality housing goes up around the town. “We signed the lease in January this year and opened on 12 April with about 70 outdoor seats, we are serving food that’s British and very local, it’s all COVID compliant and feedback has been Page 20
fantastic,” says Jim. “It’s essential to us that we support local suppliers, our meats are from Owen Taylors, who are proud to boast that all animals are from a 30-mile radius, our Aberdeen Angus comes from Stanfree Farm, we get out fruit and veg from Smarties in Claycross, Ginspired supply some of our gins and spirits, ice cream comes from Smiths Creamland Icecream and we strive hard to support local suppliers and businesses in everything we do.
“This has already proved useful, a customer recently had quite specific dietary needs that related to antibiotics used by the cows from which we source our meat, I was able to talk directly to our supplier and ensure that they were good to go for our customer.”
'feedback has been so positive. Our food is being so well received, the St Louis ribs are going down great' Matt is studying a degree in business and stepped away from full time employment to partner with Jim. “I love a spreadsheet, so it’s a great partnership, I’m happy with books, plans and figures, Jim knows his food and between us we plan where the business is headed,” explains Matt.
“Clay Cross has been impacted by the lockdown; the snooker hall that had 25 tables hasn’t survived so we’ve got rid of the function room and put in a full-size snooker table with match cloth, we already have three local teams that will be using the space once we can provide an indoor service. The room has its own bar, dart board and will provide space for locals to meet away from the hustle and bustle of the food areas downstairs.
www.s41local.com
“We have Nigel Bond, top professional snooker player from Darley Dale lined up to hold an exhibition match, so keep an eye out for this.
“We’ve had some fantastic support in getting this new business off the ground and must pass on our thanks to the Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce, in particular for an exciting venture we’re working on that may see our products in a premium retailer, all I can say is watch this space!” Matt adds. Big Jim’s BBQ Steakhouse has been a no expense spared refurbishment, all seating has been replaced, every surface has been made over and the place retains the feel of a rustic pub but is a 100% family friendly restaurant. The carvery area came with the pub so the team will be offering a Sunday roast as soon as they are able, the outdoor space is heated, and there is an indoor area perfect for bands to play, so live music is already being scheduled.
Jim and Matt are clearly looking forward to the months ahead, lots planned, man v food challenges, events, music, specials, family days plus Jim also plans to offer a range of BBQ rubs and sauces to take the Big Jim’s BBQ Steakhouse taste home … plus their own smoked cheeses to accompany your burger!
So how have the first few weeks been? “We’ve not had one bad word; feedback has been so positive. Our food is being so well received, the St Louis ribs are going down great, we select ribs with just the right fat content so it renders down as they slowly smoke, I have to admit they are really tasty,” adds Jim. “Our beef brisket is selling well and so is the Mighty Meaty Burger. “We can’t complain with the feedback we’ve had. There is still lots to do but our approach to sourcing premium products is paying off, the slight extra we pay is worth every penny if the smiling faces are anything to go by.”
Check out their social media for all that’s happening at Big Jims BBQ Steakhouse, book a table and go pay them a visit and be sure to tell them you saw them in S40 Local! You can find Big Jim’s BBQ Steakhouse on the main Clay Cross High Street, (A61) on the far side of the town at the traffic lights on the left-hand side. Bullet Beans to Big Dreams
Meet Gemma Worth, Accountant, DJ, Author and Mother Words: Simon Paterson Images: Gemma Worth
G
emma Worth is the most down to earth, and unassuming entrepreneur I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Despite starting with so little, she has achieved so much!
From the estate in Macclesfield, living on 9p value beans (good for flicking due to their hard exterior, hence the nickname 'bullet beans'), to an awardwinning multi-site accountancy firm, pod cast, radio DJ, author and mother, there is no stopping, her. I was super excited to interview Gemma of Hayesworth and Stone Accountancy (one of our advertisers) and find out what drives her, how she stays motivated and what time she gets up in the morning; I'll give you a clue, I'm still asleep!
Gemma: Me and my ex-husband used to run pubs. We took on a pub in Blackburn, it was a right dive I'll be honest with you, but we turned it around. We then got offered the Last Orders in Claycross because that was struggling, which was in 2013 and I've lived in Chesterfield ever since. It's very much my home now and I can't see myself leaving anytime soon. What was it like growing up in Macclesfield?
Gemma: Typical council estate kid, bunking off school, getting into trouble hedge hopping! My parents struggled with alcohol dependencies and me, being the eldest child took on the role of parenting my five younger brothers and sisters.
Sadly, it's not an uncommon story where the oldest sibling becomes a young carer for children being raised below the poverty line. It must have been tough.

"If something really bad happens in my life, I turn it around into something good." Gemma Worth.
So, how did a lass from Macclesfield find her way to Chesterfield?
Page 24
www.s41local.com
Gemma: Yes, it was. School wasn't great for me either. I had a bad stutter and was bullied a lot.
I ended up leaving school when I was about 15. I sat my exams but didn't reach my potential... Well, you are certainly reaching it now and there is no sign of the stutter. I bet you never dreamed you'd be a radio DJ and a podcast creator. What an inspiring story.
How did you go from a local landlord to a qualified accountant with branches in Chesterfield, Manchester, London and Stoke?
Gemma: When we moved to the Last Orders (Claycross) I was self-employed. I hired an accountant to do my tax return and thought, these guys are making it pay. I then started doing my own books and enjoyed the process. So, I enrolled on a course at Chesterfield College. I started applying for jobs and got one at a local company in the payroll department. I knuckled down and within a year I had a great job working in the pensions department. Once I was qualified, I started doing peoples tax returns as a second job. Unfortunately this breached my employment contract and I had to leave! So, I thought right, I'm gonna make a run at my own business full-time. I remember walking past these premises in Claycross and I said to my mate 'one day that will be my office.' A few months later there was a sign on it saying 'TO LET', so I went to enquire, found out I knew the guy and he said 'there you go, Gemma, here's the keys!' That was in 2018.
Wow, so in just three year's you have gone from doing people's tax returns as a second income to having offices in three locations across the country. You turned something bad into great! Gemma: If something really bad happens in my life, I turn it into something good and that's what I did when I got sacked! I lost my dad which was really hard, and the day after he died, I had a big exam to take. I sat the exam and passed with a 100% mark, I just wanted to make him proud, ya know. We were really close in the end. My dad was a big Stoke City fan and I was recently able to sponsor one of their matches in his memory. I still can't believe I was able to do that.
Since her dad's passing, Gemma has been completing challenges to raise funds for the hospice that cared for him. She recently donated a cheque for over £400 and plans to do more. Gemma's love and admiration for her father for everything he overcame is ever present in her eyes and I have no doubt he passed away a proud father. How did you grow the business so quickly?
Gemma: With hard work and determination. I was on it with my social media, out delivering leaflets by hand in all weathers to homes and businesses, writing letters to loads of businesses and working every day. My Facebook page took a bit to get going, but I just persevered with it. You've just got to keep at it. I get up around 5am every day and just crack on! Now I have three offices and I couldn't be happier.
Please Mention S41 Local
Page 25
I get up about that time as well. My alarm clock is called Florie and she's three years old! We all have slumps and some days it's really difficult to stay motivated and focused. How do you stay motivated and able to get up and at it so early?
Gemma: Obviously there are some days where I am absolutely exhausted and I have to have a break. I just love my business, it's the one thing no one can take away from me. I've had a lot of problems in the past with family and friends due to where I grew up, people taking stuff from me physically and mentally, but this business is mine, it's like my baby and no one can take it away from me. That's what motivates me and gets me out of bed in the morning! I also have a lot of pictures of my dad around me and as I said, I just want to make him proud. So, how did you end with a radio slot on the newly formed Chesterfield Radio? It seems light years away from accountancy?
Gemma pictured on the left
Gemma: It was really bizarre! Shaun Goldsmith (former Peak FM DJ) messaged me on Facebook out of the blue and asked me if I'd do a voice over for him and I thought, is this a scam ha-ha. So, I got in touch with the director of Chesterfield Radio and he said they are asking local people to get involved with the station and it's not a scam! So, I ended up doing a recording and they liked it and asked me if I'd do a show. It escalated quickly. My show is called Guitar Anthems, it's on a Friday night from 10pm. I'm a rocker at heart and love Oasis, Liam Gallagher! Don't forget to tune in, it’s rocking, ha-ha. Gemma has writte an new autobiography 'Bullet beans to big dreams' which is out this summer. Yes, that's right she's also written a book, in between learning to fly a plane, of course! Note to self: up your game Simon!
We'll catch up with Gemma in a few months where you'll be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of her book. Until then don't forget to tune in to her rock show on Chesterfield Radio. Gemma with her Autobiography (note: they're not actually this big!)

he last 18 months have been challenging and it's great to see everyone focused on getting back to normal but personally and professionally the pandemic has enabled me to do so much that otherwise would not have happened. Like many business owners it’s very hard to step out of the day to day running to develop anything new, and spending time at home to establish a good work life balance never happened. The pandemic has enabled this for me, don’t get me wrong, it’s been hard as well, particularly when my husband was working in intensive care but in a way I appreciate the opportunity it's presented.
Personally I have had the chance to completely redesign my garden, get an allotment, and unpack the last few boxes from our house move in 2018. Rekindling the joy for gardening that I hadn’t had time for since moving to Chesterfield in 2012.
Professionally, teaching online has enabled StraightCurves to reconnect with anxious learners who were unable to visit us in person, and teach throughout the UK, and even expand into the USA! It has helped us to run our after school clubs too, as previously the logistics for parents getting children to the studio after school has been a barrier, but now they can enjoy a cuppa while the children create and enjoy interactive learning from home. It's also enabled us to start running 'crochetalongs', our second is a few weeks from finishing
and another on it’s way later in the year! I love designing patterns as it fulfils the creative in me that misses working in architecture, my past life.
We've had the chance to work with the lovely Helen Rowan to photograph our crochet kits. It’s like Christmas morning seeing professional photographs of something you created, so exciting! We now have a small and slowly expanding range of kits to purchase including our chunky cowl, robin decoration, cute comforters, bubble bag and our 2021 crochet-a-long blanket. We've also taken the opportunity now with reopening slowly approaching, to have a good old clear out and reorganise at the studio, we are even hoping to get a paintbrush out too now it’s a little warmer! We hope to fully reopen in September and our in person courses are bookable through our website. There will be a few sessions before the summer, but mostly we are focusing on getting all our postponed sessions completed to start a-fresh in September. NB: we will be closed for the whole of August to maintain our work life balance, after all it works in Italy so why not Chesterfield!

fter an exciting launch it’s been a busy month at Un-hampered. Started by a couple of companies that have a passion for our town, S40 & S41 Local and Defeye Creative. Phase one is a directory of Chesterfield’s fabulous independent businesses, the shops, restaurants, food suppliers and so much more, all in one place.
Initially we had around 90 businesses listed and today (it’s a moving target so please bear with us) there are around 130.
I’m going to say it again, but I can’t thank Matt, Phil, Tom and Steve, the team at Defeye Creative, enough for the fantastic job they’ve done, creating something that's easy to use and looks like it belongs to the businesses.
Only problem is with designers and creative types, they’re never happy with what they’ve done and always want to improve! So, it might surprise you to find that we’re already at version two. If you’ve not checked it out, please do, and use it to find a new local business, step away from those large corporates and give some love to the small guys. Any business these days need a social media presence and Un-hampered has seen people following its Facebook and Instagram pages increasing slowly. Instagram was helped by our ‘Fancy a round on us?’ giveaway that saw people telling us at which great independent venture they’d like to meet up with their friends and who they’d take. Congratulations to Ellie Middleton who will find a £50 bar tab at The Junction bar - her chosen destination. Look out on Instagram for pics from Ellie, hopefully raising a glass to independent businesses! Thanks to everyone who took part and if you want to be in with a chance of snapping up further giveaways be sure to follow us on socials.
We also managed to get a mention for Unhampered and Chesterfield’s independent businesses on BBC Radio Sheffield! I was called by Saria, a researcher for Toby Foster who wanted to know about Un-hampered, why we’d done it and what we can do to encourage people back on to Chesterfield’s High Street! I had a great chat with Toby and if you fancy a listen visit Facebook, either Un-hampered or S40 Local where you’ll find an audio clip. Phase 2
We’ve discovered that not every independent business fits the 6 categories we have, so we’re adding Services, Outdoors & Leisure, Health & Wellbeing and Entertainment & Activities.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be adding businesses to these to make the site even more useful to even more people. Phase 3
The original idea for Un-hampered was an online shop that brought Chesterfield's independent businesses under one roof, with the simplicity of shopping at a large department store or supermarket, the difference being they are all from town! We’re aiming to have an early trial for this at some point soon, and after the positive response we’ve seen to Un-hampered so far, we’re excited, VERY EXCITED!
Stay in touch with what we’re up to and follow us if you’re not already. Until next time.

Days Out
Thornbridge Hall It's quackers!
Words & Images: Molly Scott
T
hornbridge Hall and GardensThornbridge Hall is a grade two listed stately home nestled in twelve acres of quirky, quintessentially English gardens with stunning views of the surrounding Derbyshire countryside. Great for good, wholesome family fun. And don't miss the hook a duck fountain! Thornbridge Hall is located not far from Bakewell and Ashford in the Water in the Derbyshire Dales. It could easily be combined with exploring Bakewell or the Monsal Trail when setting off from Hassop station. Or, you could spend the best part of the day exploring the delightful gardens of Thornbridge.
Entry is via the café (please check current Covid guidelines and opening), where there are toilets to the left before entering the gardens. The toilets seemed new and were clean despite visiting them towards the end of the day. There are disabled facilities (although the gardens would be tricky to navigate in a wheelchair) and baby changing facilities. We did see people with pushchairs, but I'd probably recommend a carrier as the paths are gravelly. All the current covid restrictions were being followed at Thornbridge Hall and Gardens. You must wear a mask to enter the café (which you have to do to access the gardens) but after that, you are outside the whole time. The grounds are huge and it was easy to socially distance from others. I felt entirely safe.
The café sells a good selection of attractive looking cakes, sausage rolls, ice creams and a range of hot and cold drinks. If you visit with young children, you can buy a fishing net. This is essential for the fun that will unfold. We bought a snazzy little retractable number for £4.50 although you could of course take your own. For us, the absolute highlight of our visit to Thornbridge Hall and Gardens was the 'hook a duck' fountain. What a quirky, fun idea! One of the ornate old fountains has been filled with hundreds of yellow rubber ducks so children can enjoy fishing them out. My three-year-old Page 32

was in her element and practically had to be dragged away. What good, wholesome fun.
The fountain has had some lovely new seating, perfect for parents/carers to enjoy watching their children have the time of their lives! Grab a coffee from the nearby café and watch the fun unfold.
Thornbridge Hall Gardens is a Royal Horticultural Society garden. It isn't quite as 'manicured' as the likes of Chatsworth, but we all loved it. There is a wide range of different areas including an Italian garden, a 30m herbaceous border, a water garden, Koi Lake, and terraced lawns overlooking the stunning Peak District. There is an extensive range of plants.
We look forward to returning through the year to see the garden evolve through the seasons. There's a wide range of plants available to buy (this area is situated just after the café, near the entrance). Many of the plants have been grown on-site from seeds, cuttings and divisions from the gardens. Overall, we had a wonderful afternoon out at Thornbridge Hall Gardens. My Mum said it was the best day out she'd had in years (to be fair, she hasn't gone anywhere else because of covid!) and my daughter loved it too. I enjoyed wandering around in the fresh air and will definitely return. Only organic things biodegrade, and this still depends on weather and location, non-organic matter only breaks down into smaller particles and never disappears.
The sanctuary the great outdoors has provided, a safe place to go, needs to be looked after and respected as mother nature does for us.
Firstly, take a bag, I’m not talking about plastic bags either, a good rucksack is an investment and is endlessly useful, so if you can, get a good one and look after it. Fabric carrier bags are useful too, especially if you’re likely to pop into any shops, so have a couple with you too.
ince the start of the pandemic there has been a rise in people enjoying the great outdoors, we are very lucky in the UK to have many national parks and woodlands to get out and explore. Unfortunately, our natural environment has taken a hit, not just footprints but sadly, litter has been a problem, whether it’s a lack of bins, awareness, education or even care, there needs to be a change.
Some statistics, the below shows how long it takes for items to breakdown: • • • • • • • • • • • •
A paper towel: 2 – 4 weeks Apple core: 1 – 2 months Banana peel: – 2 years Cigarette butt: 10 years at least Steel Can: 50 years Crisp packet: 75 – 80 years Plastic straw: 200 – 500 years (now banned in the UK) Aluminium can: 200 – 500 years Plastic bottle: 450 years ‘Disposable’ Nappy: 550 years Fishing line: 600 years Chewing Gum: Centuries
Page 34
There are very simple ways you can reduce your impact on nature, here are a few ideas to get you going.
A packed lunch is a great start, you are more likely to create something much more appetising and genuine in your own home, rather than a meal deal in a supermarket. It doesn’t need to be a full meal, just take snacks, unpackaged and home-made if you can which cuts out the packaging.
If you’re out and about because you take care of your body, perhaps take some fruit, it’s organic and biodegrades but some items can take a long time, banana skins! If there is no bin shove it in the side pocket of your bag, if you don’t have a side pocket take a container. Please don’t throw it in the bushes, it takes a long time to disappear and looks unpleasant!
www.s41local.com
Any type of reusable cutlery is fantastic to with you, useful for your pack lunches and takeaway foods, now is the time to buy a ‘spork’!
The easy solution is to carry a container with you for the butts, ‘pocket ashtrays’ are simple, reusable and responsible.
Bottled water in shops might have been fresh once but it’s now trapped in plastic bottles, besides it’s only the bottle that you’re paying for, water is free(ish)!
Hand sanitiser is great, it saves lives and prevents the spread of the virus but the convenient little bottles are having an effect of the environment. They are finding their way into the litter hall of shame along with face masks. Consider using bigger recyclable bottles of the stuff and disposing of them correctly or use the same bottle and refill it, you can purchase refills from Steph’s Sustainable Stuff, search for ‘disinfecting hand rub’. This option cuts out the unnecessary plastic packaging and contributes to shopping locally.
You’re going to want to take some sort of drink with you too, water is an obvious choice but you want to make sure it’s just water. Get a stainless steel or BPA free water bottle so you’re not drinking any toxic plastic particles, found in shop bought water bottles.
It’s a nice idea to take tea or coffee with you to warm up, a good flask or travel mug will bring you much happiness and also cuts out spending unnecessary money and waste. If you take your travel mug with you to a coffee shop, there’s a good chance you’ll receive a discount for cutting out the packaging, bonus!
If you’re a smoker, cigarette butts are litter! They’re tedious to pick up and quickly mould themselves into the floor where they will stay a decade at least.
Now by this time in the pandemic you should have a reusable mask, its more financially friendly and buying single use masks must have become a bit of a chore. So, make sure you’re not caught out without one if you need it, have a few at home and keep a couple in that trusty backpack of yours.
So now you’re ready and responsibly embarking on your outdoor adventures! With all of your ecofriendly belongings which are going to save you money and the world at the same time, pretty cool!

his is the busy season in the garden, but, as always, the thing to remember is that it should be relaxing and fun, so don't overdo it or try to stick to some fixed timetable about when things should be done. The changing weather has to be considered.

1. Weeds are usually successful because they grow and set seed quickly, so remove them before they flower. Various types of hoe can prove to be the best solution at this time of year. An ‘onion hoe’ is often considered to be one of the most versatile tools if used regularly to cut off the young weeds before established. 2. If you have fruit, you can improve the size of individual fruits by thinning out the buds. Now is the perfect time to train the stems of blackberries and other hybrid berries on a frame or wires and pruning your current bushes to help get maximum yields by stopping plants being overcrowded. 3. Summer bedding plants can be planted out now; soak them very thoroughly beforehand and, if the soil is dry, pour water into the planting hole and let it drain away before putting the plants in, although you should still water them in well – this helps the soil settle. 4. Greenhouses heat up very fast in even hazy sunshine, so they will require the maximum ventilation possible and you may wish to consider some form of shading from now onwards. 5. Creating a regular regime of watering, particularly for tomatoes and peppers, will prevent problems like blossom end rot. Make sure that plants receive adequate watering from this time of year and remember to be consistent. This is particularly important for container grown plants and growbags. 6. All danger of frost should have passed, so any tender plants that have been germinated indoors or under cover can be planted out. Lots of vegetable seeds can be sown directly into the ground now e.g. beetroot, carrots, courgettes, cucumbers, peas, pumpkins and radishes. 7. Stake plants that have a tendency to flop over, especially those with big flower heads. Ideally, the stakes should be about 20cm (8”) shorter than the eventual height of the plant, so they’re completely hidden when the plants start to flower. 8. Pinching out the growing tips of broad beans will reduce possible attack by blackfly and it will promote setting rather than excess plant growth. This technique can also be used on many other herb plants and flowers like fuchsias, a few weeks after doing this your plants are bushier and more compact. 9. Keep earthing up potato plants and if you are growing them in pots or containers remember to continue to add more compost or soil. Harvesting some early potatoes can usually start after 10-12 weeks of growth. Boiling your first new potatoes of the season reminds you why you bother to grow your own vegetables! 10. Why not try to grow herbs that have the added advantage of being friendly to butterflies? Hyssop, lavender, marjoram and thyme all provide good nectar for these pollinators and will inspire you in the kitchen too!

Green Fingered Art Neil Jackson's Allotment Street Art Words: Simon Paterson Images: Westfield Allotment Association

hen local, family man Neil Jackson isn’t off caravanning around the country, which, let’s be honest, the caravan has been fairly ‘static’ the last twelve months, he likes to turn his hand to art and tend to his allotment. Green fingered artist Neil, is a plot holder at the Westfield Allotment Association in Brampton. During lockdown, whilst most of us were out for our daily walk Neil decided to brighten up the allotments and took to painting some of the buildings with his striking, local themed pieces. Neil hasn’t always been an artist; in fact, it wasn’t until his wife Mary started an art course in Sheffield that Neil discovered he had a talent.
“Rather than wait in the car for her, I decided to join in” quips Neil.
Neil painted one of the buildings and got a fantastic response from the plot holders, so, with the wind behind him, just carried on! It was Eric Loe, the Chairman of the Westfield Allotment Association who emailed us to inform us of this wonderful, community focused project.
"It brings a smile to us all as we go down to work on our plots." Says Eric. Check out Neil's work below or look out for it as you pass.

ello again Spireites. Well, let’s kick off with a little dé jà vu. Last month I started with the old saying “football is a funny old game” and it certainly still is!
I had already written this article before we played (and lost) at home to Bromley. The game before this was a goal-less draw against Boreham Wood. But now, well since last night in fact, we lost again at home against FC Halifax Town…and this got me thinking. Comparing the last 5/6 years to now is easy. The club is better in many ways than it was under the previous owners/management. If you’re a Chesterfield fan, the difference is as obvious as the sun in the sky. But for the non footy readers flicking through this magazine, who have decided to stop and read this (as the photography clearly is very eye catching ) let me summarise. The club is now owned by the Chesterfield FC Community Trust and run by fans of the club who see the future of this great club as long term and not just as a short-term money investment. The key word here is “investment”.
Back in August 2020 the new era of the club began and with it came some risk. It was the first club to be owned by a Trust in football. The club needed to account for every penny and invest their limited funds wisely. So, three months later the club announced our new manager James Rowe (37) a pretty much unknown manager with limited first team experience, recruited from the league below us.
Fast forward five months and we are in the play offs. We have a new work ethic and more importantly, the board back James to bring around change and a brighter future. To date since November there has been around 17 new signings. This is also thanks to the new chief scout, Paul Lemon, also recruited by the Trust to bring in the players of the future. Page 44
So, back to the present climate of the Technique Stadium.
Like any manager in any new club the boss needs time to settle in to adjust and find his feet which does involve results not going our way. James to be fair seems like a top manager and from what I hear from staff at the ground he is also a top bloke too. I haven’t heard a bad word about him. Before each game James can be seen watching the squad warm up on the pitch. He also waits on the pitch to fist bump the players as they leave the field, whether we win or lose. This to me shows the man's character. They're all in this together, as a team, as a unit and I for one like that. On social media (since last night's loss) CFC fans continue to have their opinion about his team selections, tactics and formations and that is every football fan’s right. It would be boring if everybody agreed. So, my point.
Be thankful for where we are now. Sat pitch side photographing the Spireites and James it is clear the team and the boss are passionate about getting back to League 2. But after last nights result, the second home defeat in a “Rowe” (sorry, pardon the pun) we need to restock and look at where we currently sit in the National League which is 7th, in the play offs! I for one didn’t expect to be in this position six months ago. If we get promoted through it then that’s bonus! No, next season will be our year. The fans will be back, and we will surely be favourites to win the league outright. Given how the current climate of football is at the moment with the European Super League shambles, winning and earning promotion back to League 2 will be worth it! That’s what real football is all about in my book! COYB’s!
