Hello and welcome to the May edition of S41 Local Magazine. This month’s front cover was created by Vicky Bell of Tilly Fudge and I have no doubt it will be appearing as a print in our home very soon! It is a wonderful illustration of the home of S41 and S40 Local Magazines, West Studios! Inside this edition you will find loads of information on West Studios including an interview with their recording studios commercial manager, Martyn Stonehouse. The recording studio is brand new and I was amazed at how high-tech and big it was! We have a bit of a Vicar Lane special in this one. A four-page spread containing three must-visits this spring in Chesterfield. You could do one for breakfast, one for lunch, and one for dinner! Annie French’s pandemic, yoga, adventure is a must read and not what I was expecting at all! We had a wonderful day out at Cromford Mills when we had that very brief spell of warm weather. It’s nice to be writing about local, family days out again. Fingers crossed the sun shows its face again soon! Paul (S40) has top tips and advice on how to save money on fuel this year, get a bike, ride it! I’ll be dusting off the mountain bike very soon and using it for my commute to the office at West Studios, Chesterfield College. Phillip is back with another self-help article for the elderly, although this one applies to us all: rest, relaxation and sleep. I’m sure we could all use a little more... Don’t forget to enter our competition to win tickets to see Steve Harley (Cockney Rebel), in our what’s on section. Michael's CFC article is another cracker. Let's hope we hit the play-offs! All that’s left to say is; have a wonderful spring and I hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much I enjoy creating it. Peace, love and positivity Simon, Bekah and the kids E: simon@s41local.com T: 07716 014002 Next edition: June Copy Date: Friday 6th of May Delivered by: Sunday 29th of May

icky Bell (Tilly Fudge) is this month’s cover artist. She is a hugely talented illustrator who specialises in wedding stationery and art. I caught up with her to chat about her illustration of West Studios, where the name Tilly Fudge came from and her creative process. This month’s front cover is a beautiful illustration of one of my happy places, West Studios, where Tilly Fudge, Defeye Creative, Unhampered, S40 and S41 Local Magazines all share a creative space. Can you take me through your creative process for the cover please? "Thanks Simon. I’ve loved doing it. I hand draw most of my work on Adobe Illustrator. I use a tablet with a special pen which enables me to use the computer screen as a piece of paper! Illustrator allows me to use different brush strokes, techniques and create anything really. For the West Studios one I worked from an image and worked to recreate it in my own style." Vicky started Tilly Fudge back in 2014 whilst on maternity leave with her second son. She had been working for eight years as a family support worker but was under threat of redundancy. So, she created a list of all the things she wanted to do and at the top of it was art and design. She studied Design at Chesterfield College and went on to study fashion design at Derby University. Tell me a little bit about Tilly Fudge? "The majority of the work I do is wedding stationery; save the dates, seating plans, invitations etc... It was a hard market to break into and is highly competitive. The couples need to trust the person doing the designs, and you need a track record to gain it. I’ve always loved stationery, and was forever buying pens as a child. It’s not just my job, it’s my hobby, my passion." My cousin and her new husband used Vicky for their wedding and had this to say;
Page 6
'Vicky provided a first-class, personal service from start to finish. We loved her designs, they were very, us! Sadly, we had to rearrange our wedding several times due to, you know what, but Vicky was very understanding and accommodating. We’d highly recommend paying her a visit at West Studios.' Where did the name Tilly Fudge from come and has anyone ever tried buying fudge from you? "It’s what my mum used to call me when I was young! It’s just a pet name and I went with it for the business. Someone did try to buy some chocolate and orange fudge from me once, but I didn’t sell them any ha ha!" Who inspires you in the business or art world? "Holly Tucker, who created Not On the High Street. I'm looking forward to reading her second book. I've vowed to read more books this year." What's the hardest thing about running your own business? "It never leaves you! You can be sat there late at night thinking, shall I just reply to that email, maybe be I should do such and such...it's hard to switch off." What's the best thing about running Tilly Fudge? "The sense of achievement. Creating something special for someone and knowing it's just me, I did that and made someone happy." What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start their own business? "Streamline what you do. Do one thing, do it well, and keep it simple to begin with." Well, it’s clear Vicky does her thing well, and is making her customers very happy! Tillyfudge.co.uk Tilly Fudge Design tilly_fudge

“I had wanted to be a dentist for as long as I can remember and had worked towards this goal throughout my school years. In 1995 I qualified for the University of Sheffield and had the pleasure of gaining experience both in the private and NHS sector. Upon completing my degree, I worked across several practices in Sheffield and Chesterfield. For the past 15 years I focussed mainly on private clients as practice principal, before progressing to associate dentist, and my own practice.”
“I am now prioritising my interest in cosmetic and implant dentistry, and recently completed a certificate in implantology with the Campbell Academy, Nottingham to further enhance my skill set. I feel it’s vital that, we, as an industry never stop learning and I am very happy to be joining a great team at Kaye & Rafferty.”
“As an educational supervisor for foundation dentists for 13 years, I have been keen to learn from critical evaluation of my own work and through my peers. I am a compassionate dentist and enjoy providing care as part of a high performing team with integrity and I appreciate the contribution made by the whole team.”

icar Lane is a major hub for Chesterfield shoppers, and as a managed retail space is perhaps a little unique in the way it supports Chesterfield’s independent business community.
importance as they would a major high street name and putting deals in place to help them afford the high street units. It’s also encouraging that these two, plus Qoozies, have all relocated to Vicar Lane from smaller premises in the town centre.
The centre is spread across, Vicar Lane, Steeplegate and the carpark on Beetwell Street. Vicar Lane has 33 units, including four larger ones, at present only three of the smaller units are vacant, and the additional fourth big one. What is really encouraging is that ten of the 29 units are independent businesses, that’s over a third of the retail units!
Sarah was keen to point out that through the pandemic many businesses had to close their doors, but the landlord kept rents low to help businesses survive.
I’m having a quick chat with Sarah Bowler (Tenant & Community Liaison Manager) at Vicar Lane. "The landlord is really helping small businesses take space in the centre,” she explains. "It's the first UK shopping centre the Landlord has acquired. “We have been supporting pop-up’s to enable businesses to take space in the units at heavily reduced rents, in a single monthly payment. "The pop-up’s are available on 6 or 12 month terms, with the aim of businesses establishing themselves sufficiently to be able to take on a longer term contract. "Clarissa's were previously trading on the market place and outside on our streets as a mall exhibitor. Due to the success of their buisness, they've been able to grow and take on a shop in the centre." The recent additions of Pizza Pi and The Vintage Tea Rooms show the commitment the centre has to independents, treating them with the same Page 10
Vicar Lane also benefits from an outdoor space, St James' Square, the area at the junction of Vicar Lane and Steeplegate, beneath the large screen. St James' Square has been home to several events, including film showings accompanied by Salute pop up bar, where 150 plus people sat down to a fab evening of outdoor cinema. The space has also been used for other pop-up events and offers an ideal location, due to the organic footfall it achieves. "The landlord is really supportive of the events," Sarah adds, "and recently took part in a free parking initiative on selected days when other businesses offered up to 20% off etc to encourage people back into the centre". It’s clear that the team at Vicar Lane are working hard to create and support an interesting mix of businesses and make the area a pleasant and interesting place to shop and dwell… did I mention the free WiFi coverage? So read on and meet Pizza Pi, Qoozies and The Vintage Tea Rooms, three of the food based independents at Vicar Lane.

Pizza Pi
I
n 2017 two friends invested £2,000 in a trailer onto which they built a pizza oven and Pizza Pi was born. One of these two chaps was Ricky Marples and five years on Pizza Pi have opened their new premises on Vicar Lane - from trailer to high street location with 18 staff in five years, not bad. What’s even better is Pizza Pi do a fab pizza! “We make all our own dough and let it prove for 48 hours and everything we do is fresh. It’s what gives our food such great flavour," says Ricky, "and the new venue is the perfect location in which to relax and enjoy our food, we like to think of it as street food with a roof!” Ricky was in sales before setting up the business and jumped ship simply because he wanted to be his own boss responsible for his own fortune. Pizza Pi's first premises were perhaps a little tucked away on Beetwell Street but quickly became the go-to pizza place for many, but like so many businesses, all was going well until the pandemic struck.
Ricky was quick to adapt, they had always offered a takeaway service and simply took to social media to tell people about it. “I have to admit, although COVID created its problems, we were able to operate our delivery and collection service throughout lockdown, as we still do today,” says Ricky. “We picked up many new customers and they are now calling in and eating with us in our new venue.” “We must also thank the team at Chandlers Bar, who accommodated us in their courtyard whilst we were between premises. We cooked there for a few months over winter, it was cold, hard work but again we kept our customers happy with deliveries and collection.” Today Pizza Pi have joined several small independent businesses on Vicar Lane, where you'll find them below the big TV screen opposite H&M. If you like your pizzas give them a Call. I’m can be sure you’ll enjoy their great independent street style food.

Qoozies
Q
oozies is eight years old and after moving to new premises on Steeplegate in 2017, have become one of the family of independents on Vicar Lane where the have created a loyal following. Mario Lanza opened Qoozies in a small unit on the side of the Market Hall in 2014. “I simply saw a gap in the market,” he explains. “Most of the food offerings in town were either the large fast-food chains or smaller outlets where the menu was a little limited, you know, breakfast baps, bacon, sausage, ham and cheese sandwiches etc. “I thought, I can offer a real alternative – healthy options and smoothies. I know if you look at our social media people tend to share our sweet treats, which are very good I’ll admit, but we have a wonderfully tasty range of breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches and salads plus our shakes, smoothies and juices.” Mario’s journey to Qoozies is like so many others, simply frustrated working for others he wanted to be his own boss and start afresh. “I grew up in
Page 12
Italy in Calabria,” says Mario. “Life operates at a different pace there. Life revolves around food and socialising; the UK is getting there but we still have a long way to go to create that Italian vibe." “I think what we do at Qoozies is working, and if things don’t work, we stop them and add new choices, it’s been great seeing our menu evolve in this way.” So what would you choose from the menu I asked. “The Ollie Burger, chicken, cheddar and caramelised onion teamed with an Energy Boost smoothie, bananas, strawberries, grapes, yogurt and honey.” This was my first-time meeting Mario, and I’d agree that he's created something unique, plenty of healthy options but you can still have a ham and cheese or an English breakfast sandwich, a wide choice and something to please everyone. If you’ve never called in, it's time you did! You can feel the comfort of a healthy option, or you could just go with a sweet treat, an Oreo Chocolate spread pancake perhaps? Enjoy.

Vintage Tea Rooms
S
haron Hilton started working at The Vintage Tea Rooms eight years ago at the old premises on Beetwell Street, today she owns the business in the purpose built café on Steeplegate.
"Cakes are so important to us that we are delighted to have recently added Liza Bakes to our business and now own and run the business from the bakery upstairs in Vintage Tea Rooms, making delicious cakes and scones to order.
Sharon has always worked in the food industry, working in development, production and chef. It was as a chef that she started at Vintage Tea, then five years ago the opportunity arose to purchase the business, which she did, and was starting to enjoy being her own boss when COVID struck!
"Liza Bakes have always supplied us and when the opportunity came up to purchase the business I jumped at the chance," says Sharon.
The doors closed throughout the first lockdown but when things started to open up Sharon took advantage of the small business support to relocate to Steeplegate. The new business opened in March 2021 and has seen customers new and old enjoying the traditional food on offer. "I spent five years working in Spain," says Sharon. "It taught me to turn orders around quickly. The Spanish have a passion for food, they expect high quality and want it quickly too. "When we moved in this was an empty white box," Sharon explains. "Our decor is now something a bit more ‘Vintage meets Industrial’, the bespoke staircase was commissioned for the building and we’ve created a space that’s cosy and relaxed.
The Vintage Tea Rooms also has an upstairs function room which can be booked for baby showers, christenings and other intimate celebrations. "I’d also mention that we’ve held our prices and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future," says Sharon. "Prices are rising for us all but we are keen to soak up the increases and continue to offer our products at the usual prices." Seems like you have no excuse not to call in! The Vintage Tea Rooms - another great locally owned and run addition to the independent food scene in Chesterfield.
"People refer to Vintage Tea as their safe place, they feel comfortable with us and know the atmosphere will be relaxed and welcoming. It’s lovely to hear that people think of us in that way, and we’re always happy to chat with them." The menu on offer at Vintage Tea is traditional; scones, afternoon teas, hot and cold sandwiches, English Breakfast, all day brunch and salads. Their breakfast menu is extremely popular, served until midday, when the Afternoon Teas take over. They also have all the usual hot and cold drinks and a very reasonably priced takeaway menu. The thing people love at Vintage Tea has to be the range of delicious cakes, they always have a mouth-watering selection available.

Infirmary Records @West Studios Words: Simon Paterson Over the last few years Chesterfield College has been on a mission to offer it’s students and customers the latest in tech, media and now music! Martyn Stonehouse, their commercial engineer, invited me for a tour of the facilities and a tech run down in the brand new, state of the art recording studio. The first thing I noticed about the recording studio is the size of it. I’m fairly confident you could fit S Club 7 in (showing my age!), and still have room for a brass band! The studio itself comprises; a traditional classroom space with a suite of Apple Macs with the relevant software for editing and producing, a control room equipped with a state-of-the-art mixing desk and the most exciting bit, two soundproofed, acoustically engineered live rooms! "The live space is big enough to facilitate large ensembles, yet welcoming enough to cater for solo acts. It covers the full range of what people want to do and expect from a top recording studio. It’s brand new, has been acoustically designed and we can’t wait for people to start booking with us," says Martyn.
The College hopes the studio will attract local artists and bands as it is open to the general public for advanced bookings at very competitive rates. "The money the commercial side generates will enable us to keep up with the ever-evolving technology in the industry, enabling college to offer a great music programme for the students and the best equipment and experience for any bands and artists using it to record their future number one albums!" Martyn goes on to say. When you book the Infirmary Record studio, not only does it come with all the tech, bells and whistles you get Martyn's 20 years' experience as a sound engineer. "I’ve always been a huge music fan and my tech journey started around the age of 12 at Donut Creative Arts Studios. By the age of 18 I was qualified and went on to run their music production studio, workshops, live nights and mini festivals. I’ve worked with a broad spectrum of artists and I am very much looking forward to working with a lot more in the new studio here." Whether you are a community project, the next Stormzy, Arctic Monkey’s or Wet Leg, Infirmary Records is the perfect place to start or continue your journey as a recording artist. Healthy Living and Yoga A COVID Journey
It was hard and without realising it was building a resilience muscle that I didn’t realise I had, one that would be used extensively during the COVID pandemic.
Words: Annie French
The internet was very intermittent during our stay, and we had been without any connection for over a week. When the divine signal came back, the world had changed. The course was cut short, urgent changes to flights were made to try to get back home, as the world started to close down. I managed to change my flight for the next day, changing at Dubai where all flights were being cancelled as I arrived. Luckily flights to the UK were still flying and I arrived back home the Friday before the UK went into Lockdown.
I
n February 2020, I found myself waiting outside Chennai Airport in South India. After ten years of studying Art, I needed a change and needed time to come to terms with my losing my Mum. This all coincided with breaking my arm and hitting another milestone birthday. Yoga has been part of my life for over 40 years, I often played around with the idea that one day I would teach yoga. I plucked up the courage to book onto a 200-hour intensive teacher training course. Not really believing I would teach, it was just going to be a month in India, sorting my head out and doing a bit of yoga! How wrong was I? Standing outside in the blistering heat, waiting for the pick-up to take me to my new home for the next month, I met some fellow teacher trainees. Two Geordie girls, having a quick last cigarette behind the one and only cold drinks bus outside the airport (a comedy film waiting to be written). I was not prepared for what was awaiting me, after a 4-hour bus journey with seven strangers we arrived at a house in the middle of nowhere and an hour’s drive from the nearest town. The daily routine consisted of a 6am alarm call for the first shower of the day, at 7am a one-hour meditation class, at 8am the first hour and half yoga class, 9:30 breakfast, and the first lecture at 10am, sitting in the shade on a hard floor until lunch at midday. The afternoons were of a similar routine, another lecture, another yoga class, evening meditation, homework and then collapsing into bed at 10pm.
Page 18
Since then, I feel like I’ve been living in Zoom land, finishing a three-hour exam and qualifying as a yoga teacher. I absolutely fell in love with teaching, and over the last 18 months I have gone on to complete a 300-hour teacher training course with the Intelligent School of Yoga. I have worked with the wonderful Katie Dickinson, who was my teacher for many years, teaching together on zoom. We raised money for several Chesterfield charities; Junction Arts, Ashgate Hospice, the Elm Foundation and supported a group of Chesterfield lads raising money for Papyrus. I would like to say, as we come out of this pandemic, and things return to normal, but I’m afraid things have changed for us all. Never has our health been so important to us, staying fit and healthy is now my mission. My teacher in India, predicted that there would not be enough Yoga teachers in the world, to support people with the stresses of life. We have some great yoga teachers in Chesterfield, check them out, its not all about being flexible and tying yourself up in knots. There are many different styles, but most yoga teachers work on the basis of bringing the mind, body and soul together to live a balanced life.

Located less than a 20-minute drive from Chesterfield, lies the world heritage site of Cromford Mills. With independent shops and a café, and an occasional artisan market, Bekah thought it would make a cracking day out with the kids. She was right… for a change. Cromford Mills is situated in the Derbyshire countryside next to Matlock and is free to enter. Built in 1771 by Sir Richard Arkwright, it pioneered the engineering behind water-powered cotton mill production and is thought to be the first of its kind! Upon entry, we were greeted by the sound of whirring engines. There were several on display and it perfectly set the level of expectation for what was to come. Through the gates in the mill yard, you will find a variety of independent shops selling items from vinyl to cheese, which is great because I am a big fan of eating cheese whilst listening to music! We ventured into Countryside Books where I bought Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Paul Simon on vinyl and Evangeline almost purchased a copy of the Magna Carta, until I pointed out it may be a bit heavy going for an eleven-year-old, and do they have anything by David Walliams? Joking aside Countryside Books is well worth visit. We popped to the other side of the mill yard where Bekah bought a variety of cheeses and jams, all locally produced from the aptly named Cromford Cheese Shop. The cheddar with onion and sage went down particularly well.
Page 22
We grabbed ourselves a coffee from the delightful little café before venturing up the yard and into the visitors' centre. Here we learned how Sir Richard’s Arkwright’s cotton-spinning machine not only revolutionised the industry but led to cotton being Britain’s largest export! Sadly, we didn’t take the full guided tour because our four-year old prefers Peppa Pig to historical walks. After the visitor centre we headed over to the benches in the centre of the mill yard for a picnic. I devoured my usual wafer-thin ham on white bread sandwiches (keep it simple). Much to Bekah’s dismay Florie (aged 4) decided on the spot, she no longer liked ham and would be eating mummy’s cheese sandwich, which was odd because she didn’t like cheese yesterday! After the great sandwich debacle, I was able to sit and appreciate the amazing, perfectly preserved architecture and the sound of the waterfall behind me. The entire site is now grade one listed thanks to the Arkwright Society and my photos just don’t do it justice. After lunch we perused the Artisan market purchasing several bits from our very own Steph Mannion (Steph’s Sustainable Stuff) and Eva picked up a couple of Mother’s Day gifts. Across the road is the canal, sadly, we didn’t have time for a boat ride, but we did get to see some volunteers spinning yarn on a very old spinning wheel. It was very different to the yarns I used to spin my parents in the 90’s. We loved our day out at Cromford Mills and have no doubt we will be back before the end of the summer. Please do pay it a visit and support this important part of Derbyshire history. www.cromfordmills.org.uk

Bike To Work Day (Not Fri 20 May!) Words & Images: Paul Chapman
H
as anyone noticed the price of fuel creeping up recently? No? OK, you’re clearly extremely wealthy and you might as well skip this article… but maybe you want to do your bit for the planet.
The rest of us, can’t really miss it … £1.78 for a litre of diesel. I drive a van which I use to distribute the magazines when they come back from print, and filling it up is starting to hurt. Add to this cost of energy, rising food prices and everything else we’re being hit with and life is starting to feel expensive... and did I mention it’s costing me more to print S40 Local as well! If you’re anything like me, you're being really annoying at home, turning lights off all the time, shouting up when the shower has been going for more than five minutes and you’ve secretly turned the heating down! Sorry family.
One thing I do for pleasure is cycle, I might have mentioned it in the past . However, it’s for exercise, for a bit of escape, some time to switch off and take in a bit of off-road adventure, I tend to stick to trails away from the roads where I can. Well, this week all that's changed, I’ve started using my bike for short journeys that don’t involve me taking anyone with me. The commute to the studio (four miles each way), nipping to Adam’s Happy Hen's for veg and shopping (1.5 miles there and back), going to see a new client (typically within five miles), Londis for emergency chocolate (1.2 mile round trip)… you get the gist of it. Today I nipped over to Alpkit in Hathersage (not on my bike) to rummage through their box of reducedprice bags and stuff upstairs and came home with a 20L pannier for £20, not bad. I used up my birthday vouchers (thanks to my sister-in-law) and purchased a pannier rack, and there I have it, £55 and I’m loaded and ready to carry whatever I can stuff into my new bike bag! A bit of maths. My van does 33.1mpg, a gallon costs £8.10 … sorry what, a gallon costs EIGHT POUNDS AND TEN PENCE! I need to lie down! It’s costing me 25p a mile, that’s without considering, buying the van, VED, insurance, tyres, servicing, 'Paul & Nicola' windscreen blind, fluffy dice etc, phew!
my bike to recoup the cost of the kit... just 28 trips to the studio and back. Taking this further if I’d bought a new bike for £350 (the average UK price), at todays fuel prices I’d need to do 1,400 miles to pay for it, but who knows where fuel prices are headed - better get prepared. If you’ve stuck with me so far, thank you. I know cycling on busy roads can be daunting but there are lots of quiet cycle paths away from the main roads, some of the paths are pretty unusable after any rain if you don’t want to arrive at your destination looking like swampy, but there are some new sections of key infrastructure planned that will hopefully support greener more sustainable travel. In general, it’s pretty good and the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign have a useful map showing these routes which is a great help. My commute to the studio just has the top section of Chatsworth Road to ride and share with the traffic, once in Somersall Park there are dedicated paths and quiet roads all the way to the studio, I reckon about half a mile of my four-mile route is on busy roads and I’m confident that wherever you need to go, you could plan a quieter route. If you’re keen but not feeling confident, there is the County Rider Scheme. This scheme provides free one-to-one cycle training to people aged 18 or over who live, work or study in Derbyshire. The great thing about County Rider is that the programme can be tailored to suit your needs. Your instructor will design the programme to suit you whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced cyclist who wants to become an even better rider. They’ll provide up to four, two-hour sessions to help you stay safe, feel confident and travel independently. If your bike needs replacing, there are government schemes that allow you to purchase a bike tax free provided you are a PAYE employee. See Bike2workscheme.co.uk. If you’re short of funds and want a bike, Monkey Park have a selection of recycled and refurbished bikes at very low prices to help people obtain their own transport, and if you have a bike but it needs repairs, check out Dr. Bike in Queens Park each month where they carry out repairs free of charge. Friday 5 August is Bike to Work Day UK, so loads of time to get ready for this, or you could pretend you’re stateside and aim for Friday 20 May which is the US date, this way you’ll get an early start and be able to enjoy some Summertime commuting! Give me a smile as you pass.
The cost of my new kit / cost per mile = £55 / 25p = 220 miles. Therefore I need to ride 220 miles on Please Mention S41 Local

REST RELAXATION AND SLEEP Words: Philip Norcliffe (Handle With Care Seniors) Image: Adobe Stock
P
eople value highly rest, relaxation and sleep as a major part of their quality of life. How to gain the most from these and achieve pain control is the subject under discussion. If you are in the happy position of not having any concerns about these then I congratulate you. The discussion is primarily aimed at the older person but is I feel relevant to all age groups. Rest We recoup strength which is important in building resilience, enabling our immune system to recover and help protect from infection and cancer. The discussions I have held with people over many years is to pace oneself, easier said than done when one looks at the demand we and others place on us. Selfish or ‘ME’ time helps to stretch out our resources meaning we do more just not this instant, improving our effectiveness, recharging the batteries. Relaxation Individuals develop unique ways and rituals to relax, over years routines get built into habits, likes and dislikes. We make choices based on our preferences this includes what we do to relax. Designating part of our day or week to something pleasant and sustaining, whatever form it takes, has been earned therefore should be treasured and nurtured. Like rest it should be defended against erosion. Being denied this for whatever reason can leave one resentful and unfulfilled. Sleep Shakespeare writes that “Sleep that knits up the ravelled ‘sleave’ of care. Its value to our quality of life cannot be overstated, disturbed sleep or lack of adequate sleep (of less than 7 hours) is a complaint of nearly half of all adults in the UK. The causes of poor sleep are legion, often created Page 30
over time and may be a self-fulfilling fact of life. Sleep allows memories of the day’s activities to be consolidated into the long term memory and in effect detoxify the brain. Adequate sleep enables both emotional and physical repair, leaving us better able to cope with the waking hours. Inadequate sleep leaves us in a lower mood, with a lower pain threshold, a slower reaction time, more irritable, increased stress, the accumulated effects of sleep deprivation, adversely affect our mental, physical and medical state. Fatigue, stress, depression, brain fog, metabolic disorders including diabetes mellitus (type 2), and obesity, more calories are consumed by those with disturbed sleep patterns. Pain A common cause of disturbed patterns of rest, relaxation and sleep. See your G.P. or Pharmacy for advice and a possible referral to a pain management specialist. Self medication may be a problem, pain is the way your body is telling you something is wrong, treatment and resolution of what is wrong may be delayed by your attempts at self diagnosis and treatment. The wearying and worrying effects of pain need addressing at the soonest opportunity. Top tips on looking after yourself •
Number one is an afternoon nap between 1 and 4 p.m. about 20 to 30 minutes is a good habit to cultivate
•
Inform others that you are taking care of your need for rest and relaxation, be firm, you can better attend to their needs when you have recouped
•
Establish a set bedtime and routine, reducing fluid intake, particularly after 6 p.m. that particularly goes for caffeine and alcohol
www.s41local.com
•
Take a warm bath or shower
•
Avoid screen time for half an hour before bed time
•
When you get up in the morning try to get some daylight
•
If at all possible carry out gentle exercises or at least stretch, breathe and relax
•
The bedroom should preferably be darkened, cool and a warm bed
•
Try relaxing music
•
A 400ml glass of water on waking

Highfield Bowls Club Did you know there is a crown green bowls club at the back of The Highfield Pub on Newbold Road? We wouldn’t be surprised if you said no, even people who have lived in Newbold all their lives might not be aware of it, even though it’s been there over a hundred years. The club is looking for new members. Membership is open to everyone; men, women and youngsters of all abilities and we would welcome new members with no previous bowls experience. All you need to get started is a pair of flat shoes, like trainers or pumps – the club can provide everything else, bowls, jacks, and some tuition and when you get more proficient and want to buy some bowls of your own then your fellow club members will be on hand to offer advice on what to buy. There are many decent second-hand bowls on the market at very reasonable prices. Membership is £52 for the year (reduced for younger players) and the bowls season runs from March to the end of September. For anyone interested in competitive bowls the club has several teams in local leagues but there are always plenty of opportunities to just use the
Page 32
green for social bowls or practice, for those who do not want to play in a league. The Highfield is a friendly and welcoming club and we are lucky enough to share our site with a friendly, welcoming family orientated pub too, which is a great bonus. So, if your New Years resolution was to get outdoors a bit more, get some exercise or just to try a new sport, we would like to recommend you try crown green bowls at The Highfield, for further enquiries please contact The Secretary on 07966 373984

Hockey Heroes
ockey Heroes is a national incentive, delivered by local clubs to promote physical well-being and has an interesting ‘Super Hero’ twist. Steve Lord from Chesterfield Hockey Club will be running the England Hockey course for children ages 5 to 8 based out of St Mary's High School, Newbold.
Words: Steve Lord Images: Chesterfield Hockey Club
"We ran our first Hockey Heroes sessions earlier in the season and had 21 attendees for the eight week course, which was very enjoyable for the kids and our coaches!" says Steve. "19 of these children have stayed on and are now actively involved in our junior hockey sections. The next event will start on the 18 May and so we are keen to spread the news and offer places to local children." www.play.englandhockey.co.uk/ hockeyheroes The Chesterfield Hockey Club was formed in 1899 and they are currently based at St Mary's High School where they have a very active youth set up (120 junior members) as well as eight adult teams (male and female), one development team, two mixed teams and one veterans team. They have players in the club ranging from five to 65 years of age! Steve explains, "as a local club, run by volunteers, we are constantly looking to engage with our community and Hockey Heroes is a fab way to get children involved in a great sport." "Although Hockey Heroes is a national initiative run by England Hockey, we are hoping to get kids playing sports, and in the longer term playing hockey for the junior then senior teams! "We hope that the newbies that come along will be in our senior teams in ten years time... you never know!" League 2 football next season? Words & Images: Michael South
Welcome back my fellow Spireites. Sitrep. The league title is out the window. Injuries are still a huge concern. but at least the playoffs are still on…aren’t they?
could only manage a 1-1 draw in front of the cameras, so just one point earned there. It was ironic though, that it could have been three points for CFC if Whittle, Chesterfield's only goal scorer on the day, hadn’t then given away a needless penalty which cost us the two points.
At best, aiming to stay in the playoffs is the only realistic goal for the Spireites this season and that will take winning games outright to achieve. Given recent results, the limited games left this season and the less-than-ideal run of form since Cookies return, we should count our blessings to be even still in the playoffs in my opinion.
Ongoing injury crisis.
Since last month's article most results haven't gone the Spireites way. Hence the title being out of reach now. The only win since the Boreham Wood game (at the time of writing) came when Maidenhead United paid us a visit. It took 76 minutes for the Spireites to make their mark after Asante was subbed on in the second half to score and take all three points. Next up was an away trip to Altrincham which was, to be fair, just pure bad luck for Chesterfield. It ended with us losing 1-0 due to an average long-range shot hitting a divot in the turf just in front of Scott Loach and deflected over the diving keeper and into the back of the net. That was three points gone. Next up came Notts County away which was live on BT Sports. This time we
As I pointed out last month, when Whittle scores the first goal of the game, Chesterfield have had a player subbed off due to getting injured. There was Tshimanga and then McCourt a short while ago which has played a massive part and added to Paul Cook's player selection problem. Well, it happened again. During the Notts Co game (after Whittle scored) Grimes left the field injured in the second half. This does leave me thinking. If I was a Chesterfield player and Whittle scored, I’d ask to be subbed off to avoid injury and pain. I joke of course. No, I’d just wear bigger, thicker shin pads. Depending on where the Spireites finish in the playoffs this season will determine if we play an extra playoff game or not. Finishing in second or third place we would only have to play one playoff match to get to the playoff final, a total of two games. Whereas if we finish the season in fourth, fifth, sixth or seven place, we will have to play two playoff matches to get to the playoff final,
Wedding photography T: 07807 042655 E: michaelsouthphotography@yahoo.com @MichaelSouthPhotography Page 46
www.s41local.com
so three games in total. As we already have many players out injured, it would be ideal to finish in second or third place in the league come the 15 May. This would reduce the minutes on the pitch needed to gain promotion. With Tshimanga, our top goalscorer out till next season (still the National League’s top scorer with 24 goals I may add), we will need to rely on our limited and tired players to score the goals to secure Chesterfield FC League Two status next season. That is a tall order. Will Paul Cook run the risk of playing half fit players to help with the promotion hopes at the final hurdle? Is Paul Cook doomed to follow in Jack Lester's and John Sheridan’s footsteps by returning to a club and failing to achieve what was expected of him based on his past success at the club? If Cook doesn't achieve promotion this season you could argue it wasn't his team of players or his own squad that failed, it was James Rowes. Next season, be it in League Two or the National League, Cook will have an opportunity to mold his own team from scratch and ship in new players and release others who aren’t in his longterm plan. Yes, currently there are limited players with a tight budget. There were also no players brought in by the end of March's transfer deadline. But should Cook have brought in any old player just to say he has signed someone? Afterwards Cook said he's not going to sign any players just for the sake of it and for me, this is a wise move. It follows in the Trusts ethics of the club's money management plan. The club's accounts did show last month that Chesterfield FC made a loss of £400,000 in income due to the Covid global pandemic as no gate receipts and the hospitality were affected. Fortunately, however, at the club’s AGM, a £1 million investment from two local Chesterfield businessmen was announced which will significantly help in the club's future. So, with just over six weeks left until the last game of the season, will Chesterfield be in the playoffs fighting for that second placed promotion spot? Watch this space… COYB’s!!!

Garden Tips
GARDEN TIPS
Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts
B
eing in the garden on any sunny day in May has to be one of life’s best experiences; the sun has real warmth and all around plants are shooting up. But a cautionary note: it’s still possible for there to be overnight frosts, especially in slightly more exposed areas, so be cautious about putting out anything tender, or be prepared with some improvised shelter - it won’t need to be particularly robust as any frost will be light. The upside is that frost will only happen if the sky is clear, which makes for wonderful mornings… As potato shoots appear do not forget to ‘earth up’ the growing shoots. This serves two purposes – young potato shoots do not like frosty weather, so cover over the shoots with soil for protection, and it also helps to avoid young tubers from turning green with sunlight exposure. Thin out raspberry shoots and prune gooseberries. As always, the idea with this sort of job is make an open framework with an even distribution of fruiting stems all getting a good supply of sunlight and air (often easier said than done). Lots of more tender vegetables can be sown now: French and runner beans, courgette, cucumber, pumpkin and squash as well as cauliflower and purple sprouting broccoli for harvesting in winter - they like a long growing season. Towards the end of the month, plant out summer bedding plants. These are available from garden centres but are often displayed earlier than they are sensibly planted out, so, if tempted, keep them in a shady place (protected from frost) and well-watered until they can go into the open garden. If you’ve already sown tomatoes and courgettes inside, they can now go outside. As upright (cordon) tomatoes
Page 48
grow, keep an eye open for any side-shoots that form in the angle between the main stem and branches and remove them. Towards the end of the month, seeds for both can be sown directly into the ground. Prune spring-flowering shrubs after they have finished flowering and remove any growth damaged by frost from evergreen shrubs. Check variegated ones for any where the leaves have reverted to plain green and remove those shoots completely. Sow peas outside now with pea sticks in place early and prepare supports for any other plants (e.g. climbing French and runner beans) that will need them later. Lawns will now need regular mowing (use the clippings as a mulch) and keep on top of the weeding. Hedges will need clipping, but check for birds' nests first, and if you’ve been feeding the birds in the winter, don’t stop – current thinking is that you should do it all year. It's that time of year when spring bulbs are now beyond their best, but as they fade the tidy gardener can't resist the temptation to 'tidy them'. Once the flowers have faded you can cut the head off the flower if you want to, don't cut back the leaves until they are completely yellow, and don't tie them up either, the leaves need to continue to produce chlorophyll (food), the leaf needs exposure to as much light as possible, the bulb needs the energy in the leaf to be reabsorbed into the bulb ready for next year. Once your leaves have completely withered your bulb is now dormant, so you can lift them if you need to thin them out or move clumps that are too big to new areas, they don't generally need feeding they're very self-sufficient. Keep sowing salad crops (radishes, spring onions, lettuce etc.) and herbs (parsley, coriander, basil etc.) for regular harvesting.
