Hello and welcome to the June edition of S41 Local Magazine. This month’s front cover was created by Bethany Salt aka Salteria. As the warm weather sets in I feel this beautiful floral illustration perfectly captures the mood and positivity that the summer season brings. You can read Beth’s artist interview inside. Defeye Creative, Paul (S40 Local Magazine) and I have launched a collaborative project called Unhampered. I would really appreciate it if you could read the article inside and pay the website a visit. I think you will like what you see! Last month we saw a ghost in town! Don’t panic, it wasn’t a real one. It was a gift created and placed by Spire Spooks. I caught up with Spire Spooks after some sterling detective work. As a family, we are going on our first holiday in a long time! We planned a trip to Paris with a few days in Disneyland for the girls. I also managed to acquire some tickets to the French Open (tennis) but haven’t told the kids yet. I’ll break it to them that they have to sit in silence and watch tennis for the day once we get there. It’s one-off of my bucket list! May is national walking month and we love a good walk. We are so privileged to live on the edge of the Peak District and I look forward to getting out and about in the Peaks again. Paul at S40 has created a six-page spread consisting of some of his favourite, local, walks. I’d love to see some photos of our readers out on the walks and if I get enough, I may be able to publish them in the next edition. Please send them to simon@ s41local.com Michael South is back covering the end of the Spireities season. We’ll have to find something else for him to photograph and write about over summer. All suggestions considered! Apologies for the slight error in last month's crossword clue 26 down, we're only human! All that’s left to say is enjoy the start to your summer and I hope you enjoy reading S41 as much I enjoy creating it. Peace, love and positivity Simon, Bekah and the kids E: simon@s41local.com T: 07716 014002 Next edition: July Copy Date: Friday 10 June Delivered by: Sunday 3 July

T
his month's cover artist is Bethany Salt, creatively known as Salteria. Beth is a surface pattern designer with a love for colour and imaginative illustrations. Beth gets a lot of her inspiration from her day job at Hobbycraft, who just happen to stock some her designs through their inhouse Artisan Programme. Her designs are printed onto fabric and sold online, and in stores across the country. Pretty cool! Beth graduated from Leeds University and from there went on to hone her skills in Sydney. “Living in Sydney was one of the best times of my life. I was lucky enough to do an internship in pattern design which made a huge difference to my career and future plans. I learnt so much from the design team and it definitely set me up with the skills to do what I do to this day.” Beth created two different floral designs for our covers (S41 and S40 Local Magazines) and we absolutely love them. “Floral designs are my favourite because you can create so much detail and tonnes of interesting little elements that come together to build a busy and bold pattern. I love anything nature related, I think there is so much on offer and it also enables me to be imaginative and create new florals and leafy motifs, I’m always trying to draw a new flower with each design I make.” Beth’s abstract, colourful style is unique which is very important to her as an artist. “I have always enjoyed colourful abstract artwork, when I was studying for my degree it was important to develop a style that did not breach another designer’s style. Over time you naturally find a handwriting that is unique to you. Obviously, there are
Page 6
similarities between designers drawing styles, there are only so many subjects you can be inspired by; and so many botanicals or animals to draw, but trying to stay in your own lane and add your own ideas is really important, it's much more fun than being the same as everyone else!” We asked Beth for top tips for Chesterfield’s aspiring artists and what the future holds for Salteria? “I would say try and hone in on what you want to do and keep it simple for yourself. Learn as much as you can about what you'd like to achieve and keep researching! I’d also say it’s very important to be willing to change your original plans a little if needed – my original plan was to solely make clutch bags, but that was very limiting so it’s important to be open to other ideas. I also think it’s really important that you enjoy what you do!” “I hope to be able to keep growing the brand and I’d love to find more places to stock my products around Chesterfield and maybe further afield. I would love to design a homeware range, bringing colourful prints into the home. In an ideal world I’d be clever enough to sew clothing as I have always liked the idea of my prints on fashion garments but I think that’s definitely on the dream list for now... maybe one day!” Whatever the future holds for Beth we are sure it will be as bright as our front cover! Business Intro
Meet: MeatMyBBQ Words & Images: Paul Chapman
From pastime to small perfectly formed indy business, MeatMyBBQ is just the sort of business we like to talk to at S40 Local … and even better, eat with! Seb is the driving force behind MeatMyBBQ, a business that will deliver recipe kits and the ingredients to allow you to impress friends and family with your BBQ skills! At the age of 16 Seb was working at Matlock Garden Centre as a Saturday and later as a department head, responsible for garden furniture, including Barbeques. "I attended six form at school which meant I could work three days, after school I did an Open University degree which allowed me to also work full-time.
"I'd be sent on courses run by Weber BBQs to equip us with the skills to use their products, I found myself really enjoying this. I was surprised at the range of food you could cook on a BBQ, apart from meats, they can be used as a standard oven to cook more or less anything, including deserts, brownies and cookies," explains Seb. So how did he get from this to his own business? "It was down to fate really; some friends knew I loved to BBQ, and when they threw a 60th birthday party decided they didn’t want to be standing cooking all evening and they asked if would cook for them!" This turned out to be a great day, people really enjoyed the food and started asking how things were cooked, the flavours used etc. In addition, the hosts decided to raffle Seb off! Well not Seb specifically but his BBQ services, they also raffled off ten runners up prizes that saw Seb cooking for the hosts with the runners up as attendees! As a result, people went off to buy BBQs for themselves. "By now I was working full time in a new career, but it reminded me how much I loved BBQing and chatting to customers about the pros and cons of different BBQs," adds Seb. The idea started to form, to establish a business that involved the love of food and BBQ cooking. "One day whilst cleaning up after cooking, I had the idea of creating my own flavours and selling BBQ kits. I started working with flavours and put together several rubs that can be used with meats to produce the perfect burger or steak etc." It then took over 12 months to achieve the necessary food hygiene certificates and put in place the logistics to sell items and keep them fresh. MeatMyBBQ use sorbafreeze together with a specialist packaging with a wool cool lining to keeps products fresh and at the correct temperature for 72 hours, making delivery possible.
Page 8

Seb was excited to receive his first order from someone he didn’t know, until then, most had been from family and friends. "It was great to get that first feedback, the customer loved what we did, and I was really pleased to know that all the hard work was starting to pay off," says Seb. Initially Seb is keeping thing quite simple with a small number of products available to order. He provides recipe kits for various meats, (beef, chicken, pork) including rubs and/or marinades. You receive the required amount of mince or meat for the recipe, the flavours and the freshly made rub, plus any other ingredients to accompany it. These are measured out so there's no waste, the ingredients are enough to make four burgers (seven to eight with the pork kit) and they arrive complete with a recipe card so you can follow the steps to become a BBQ master. All you will need to provide is a bread cob, some salad and possibly a drink to go with it ... oh and a BBQ of course! All Seb’s meats are sourced from Derbyshire so if you use one of our local bakeries for bread, farm shops or market stalls for veg, and a local brewery for a beer, you can have a spread that has travelled just a few miles!
"The recipes are really easy to follow and the whole family can get involved," says Seb. Whilst we chatted, Seb cooked up a Classic Burger with bacon, and a Southern Rub Steak which I was invited to try (perks of the job!), there was also a Caribbean Chicken which I didn’t get chance to try due to time. The burger was delicious, cooked perfectly and gently flavoured with onion, garlic, Worcestershire Sauce and Dijon Mustard, the steak had a bit of a kick, flavoured with paprika, chilli, cayenne pepper, cumin, coriander and garlic. The recipes cover various skill levels, whether you're a beginner or a pro wanting to try something different, and the MeatMyBBQ website has a selection of different rubs and BBQ accessories to get you going. So, if you’ve spent lockdown creating the perfect setting in your back garden in which to entertain, or you simply love any excuse to fire up the BBQ, give MeatMyBBQ a try and step up your BBQ game. www.meatmybbq.com

t the start of lockdown a conversation took place between three of Chesterfield's independent businesses who have a passion for our town, S40 & S41 Local and Defeye Creative. The result was Unhampered. The first phase was an online directory of Chesterfield’s fabulous independent businesses, the shops, restaurants, food suppliers and so much more, all in one place. As with designers they weren't happy with v1, or v2, and recently the whole site has been updated and, I know I'm biased, but v3 now looks even better. Take a look at the new site, QR code below to make it nice and easy, it seems strange how we have COVID to thank for introducing people to QR codes! Anyway, if you’ve not checked it out, please do, and use it to find a new local business. Step away from those large corporates and give some love to the small guys. Our social media presence has seen people following our Facebook and Instagram pages and if you've not yet done so please pop across and give us a follow and a like. WIN WIN WIN!!! 'Indie £50' is our new giveaway, £50 to spend with any one of our founder members who are shown on the page opposite ... the number of founder members is growing daily so you can be sure there'll be something you'll enjoy. a piccy, post it on Insta or Facebook and tag #unhampered, oh and you'll need to ensure you follow us on socials. We'll select a winning pic, at random at the end of June and arrange spending with the founder member business of your choice! Simple. Last year we ran a ‘Fancy a round on us?’ giveaway, that saw Ellie enjoying £50 behind the bar at The Junction. Be sure to follow us on socials as we'll be doing all sorts over the next few months. It's been great to be part of the Unhampered journey and the whole team have a real passion for small independent businesses and we'll be doing all we can to support them and encourage you to do the same. Go on, step through the door of a small business you've not tried before, I'm sure you'll end up loving it. I'd like to say a massive 'thank you' to our founder members, they're all shown on the opposite page. These are all businesses who have financially supported the first phase of the project and we have a few more almost signed up and have a few spaces left if you're interested! Stay in touch with what we’re up to and don't forget to give is a follow. Until next time. The Unhampered Team.

Bow Window Films Ltd
A new local business offering a specialist service Words: Paul Chapman Images: Bow Window Films Ltd
B
ow Window Films Ltd is a relatively new business established in April 2021 but evolved from a family business who have worked in the industry for many years, to expand and setup a small team locally.
Adam Bowler from Walton owns the business, Warren Hutton fits the films and Lauren Crampton runs their socials (pictured below). I know nothing about Window films, so I ask, what are they? “They are simply a thin film that can be applied to residential or commercial windows for one of many purposes,” says Adam. “The most popular use is solar control, to cut out the sun’s harmful UV rays, to stop fading furniture and help control temperature. “It’s like tints used in the motor trade but for architectural use. Many people use films to reduce the heat in conservatories or orangeries. Our standard Silver 20 is one of our most popular products, it reflects 78% of the suns energy so can prevent a south facing conservatory becoming too hot, it can cut out 99% of the suns UV rays protecting furniture from fading and reduces glare by 82%, eg: it reduces the glare from the sun.” Adam adds, “this is a really popular product and results in a much more pleasant light in a conservatory and helps control heat, compared to roof conversion or blinds which reduces light significantly and costs much more than our films. Prices start from as little as £130 installed and fitted, and a typical conservatory price is £400, but call for our special offer. “Our films are hassle free to have installed, maintenance free and cost less than roof blinds.” Your choice of window film is vast, you can choose a darker tint; reflective films that prevent people from seeing into your property - from the outside it
Page 14

looks like a mirror. They also provide thicker safety films that provide privacy that also turns standard glass into toughened glass, so increases the security of the property. “Our security film creates a 'safety net' and holds shards of glass in place when impacted, like laminated glass in cars, it makes it safer for owners and reduces the risk of vandalism and burglaries,” says Warren. The work done by Bow Window Films includes players tunnels at top flight football stadiums, did you know they use a mirrored film on the inside so the players can’t see out? At Chesterfield's ground The Technique Stadium they have supplied film to the security tower, player entrance and boardroom at the ground. They have done museum displays and windows to reduce UV damage, Research & Development rooms in large corporations to stop people seeing the secretive work that goes on behind the glass and frosted bands around meeting rooms etc. One of the most impressive films was the switchable smart films that can be used on any fixed glass windows. These are clear when powered off but turn solid at the touch of a button to create complete privacy for your prorerty. Adam was keen to point out that due to their buying
power they are able to offer some of the most competitive prices for the switchable systems. Window films can be used in so many ways, garden room security, shed and garage windows, any number of commercial uses including decorative effects, logo designs on windows and they also offer architectural vinyl wrapping. “Our frosted film can convert clear glass to acidetch style privacy glass, for use in bathrooms and meets all the necessary planning permission rules," say Warren. "We can supply one-way contravision films, used to create a see through image, like they use on bus window adverts." “We recently installed heat reflective films in a large office to reduce the heat coming in, resulting in cheaper energy bills, as the air conditioning didn’t have to work so hard.” The more I talk to the pair the more uses of the films we discussed, so if you think there might be a window (or windows) in your life that could benefit from a film, give the guys a call for a no obligation quote and follow them on socials to see their latest installations. 01246 903902 www.bow-window-films.co.uk @BowWindowFilmsLtd

Heathcote's Got Talent Words: Simon Paterson
H
osted by the hugely talented Les Morgan the Heathcotes Group talent show was an afternoon of first-class entertainment for all.
Held at Hasland Village Hall on Good Friday, the event showcased a plethora of local talent, all of which were service users at one of the Heathcotes Group Facilities. I witnessed some great performances including a reggae dance, a keyboardist, renditions of Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Tom Jones and even S Club 7! The energy in the room was infectious with every single audience member clapping and cheering each performer as they wowed the crowd with their talents and skills. The joy such an event brings to not only the service users but to the whole community is priceless. Jade Lister Co-production Chairman and guest judge had this say, "it is very important for service users to get their voices heard. I also like to see every single service user happy, and they all made me proud at the talent show. When everyone is happy, I am happy." Eight months ago, Heathcotes Allstars was born and has provided people with an opportunity to build confidence and talk about the things that really matter to them so that they shape the support people receive. "The Allstars worked together to put on the event and wanted to involve people within the community so they could make new friendships and share their talents. It was a fantastic day and wonderful to see people shine," says Keeley Denman, Quality Experience and Co-Production Lead. We can’t write about a talent show without mentioned the winners, although the real winners were everyone involved. In third place was Daniel Flowers, 2nd place went to Carrington Park and first place went to Aimee Downey. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who performed on the day, thank you, I really enjoyed it. A big thanks to the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress, Tony and Sharon Rodgers for presenting the awards on the day. I hope to be invited back next year!

SPIRE SPOOKS Words: Simon Paterson Images: Spire Spooks
W
alking through town last month we happened to stumble across a miniature ghost figurine. Keen to know more I launched my own investigation and after some sterling detective work (the likes of Poirot would be proud of), I found Spire Spooks on Instagram. Spire Spooks is a local lady who wishes to remain anonymous (very mysterious) but was more than happy to answer my questions. Below are the findings of my investigation: Who is Spire Spooks and what is the purpose of this project? "I am a local artist here in Chesterfield and my aim is to spread the 'spirit' of happiness. I do this by hiding model ghost figurines in town for people to find, along with a little note attached to each ghost that wishes the finder good luck and happiness." Do you make the ghosts yourself? 'I make all of the ghosts myself, and I have my own moulds which give the ghosts a unique form. Then they are all hand painted and glossed. Very recently I partnered with another local artist to make a highly detailed tattoo art ghost, which we are planning to auction off for charity." Can we keep the one we found? "Some people re-hide the ghosts for other people to find, and some people take their ghost home to keep as a talisman, either option is encouraged." Do you have any plans to sell your creations? "I do sell the ghosts at artisan markets (Chesterfield), but I have never been in this to make profit. Local artisan markets are a good way to gain more interest and popularity. It also allows me to raise some money to buy more equipment to continue making ghosts ready to hide. I wish only to bring smiles to people who might happen to stumble across a hidden ghost whilst out and about in Chesterfield Town. I often receive messages from people who live elsewhere, or who cannot find a ghost asking if they can purchase one from me. I always want to make people smile so I always do my best to get a ghost to everybody who wants one." Will you reveal your true identity to our readers? "I wish to remain anonymous, and so I go by my job title only - The Grim Reaper. I also use disguises when hiding these ghosts and when I make videos and attend local markets with them. I'm not here for personal followers or recognition. I simply wish to create a bit of joy and happiness in the world." I love this social action project. There are good people out there doing great things, we just need to look for them!

Healthy living with Annie 90 Day Planning Workshop Words: Annie French 90-day planning has been part of my life for over 20 years. I first used it for my business when annual business planning seemed like an exercise, that when finished, was filed away for another year to collect dust. Little did I realise that a 90-day plan would become such an influence on my personal life, not just the business. Having a vision is important, and I’m still deciding what I want to be when I grow up. My way of looking at life changed in 2006 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, this certainly was not part of my plan. Facing your own mortality shakes you to the core, bringing all your values into focus and recognising who and what are the most important things in your life. Tough questions like would I get to fifty? Would I see my son graduate? I haven’t run that marathon yet, which I had been thinking about for 30 years. Life gets in the way, but we all need to recognise that life is so very short. Covid has had this effect on many of us, so now is the time to take control of this precious life of yours. I've used 90-day planning, in my academic life for research and assignments and for my wellbeing, ensuring I stay healthy and enabling me to achieve my goals and dreams. Two of the many books that I have read over the lockdowns, that have influenced my current thinking are ‘The Top Five Regrets of the Dying’ by Bronnie Ware, and ‘The 12 Week Year’ by Brian P. Morgan. Bronne Ware
Page 24
describes the phenomenal clarity of vision that people gain at the end of their lives, and how we might learn from their wisdom. Brian Moran writes about this powerful approach to goal achievement, breaking the year down into four quarters makes life easier to handle. Combining my personal experience and knowledge, I am gathering a group of like-minded people who have a vision and want to achieve their dreams, in a monthly group workshop, designed to help them create their vision, achieve their goals whilst maintaining their health and wellbeing. 90Day Planning helps you to achieve your personal, work and business goals. It helps you to plan weekly time blocks for all those important tasks that will get you closer to your dream, identify habits that may be holding you back, help you to find your purpose and provide the all-important accountability framework. I have delivered 90-day planning workshops for small businesses and teams, helping them achieve their organisational objectives and using their time wisely whilst maintaining a well-balanced life. I have always been a planner and love productivity, since my recovery I have gone on to run three marathons, proudly achieved a BA and MA, made my dream of being a yoga teacher come true, but most importantly I saw my son graduate. Join us each month with like-minded people who want to achieve their dreams.

May is Living Streets' National Walking Month. This year, Living Streets are encouraging us to try #Try20 - and walk for 20 minutes each day during May, yes I know it's almost June but we are always keen to encourage people to get out and about so we thought we'd include a few words. Living Streets is a UK charity who want a nation where walking is the natural choice for everyday local journeys. Their mission is to achieve a better walking environment and inspire people to walk more, 'progress starts here: one street, one school, one step at a time' they say. Walking is an easy and accessible way to improve physical and mental health and a 20-minute walk can reduce the risk of a number of preventable health conditions, including certain cancers, depression, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. By swapping a short drive for a short walk, you can also help reduce air pollution, congestion and road danger - whilst saving yourself some money and getting active in the process! Living Streets contains their #Try20 tips or you can download and print your own
Page 26
#Try20 checklist to track your progress. They are also keen to see people sharing their progress and activities by sharing on social media using the hashtag! The place to go for more information is their website or social Media. Living Streets also run local groups who champion walking in the areas in which they live. Right now Chesterfield doesn't have a group but you can sign up to the Sheffield based group or if you feel passionately about walking, get in touch to see what's needed to set up a local group. We have featured a number of local walks in S40 Local and over the next few pages we remind you of each one and have included a QR code that will take you to our website for full details. We also have a chat with Clare Freeman who is organising the local leg of the Women's End to End Relay taking place from Lands End to John O'Groats starting in June, which will be raising money for The Woodland Trust. This walk is almost five miles with plenty of options to add sections on or continue around all three reservoirs. There is even the option to call in at The Peacock Inn for a drink or meal, so as far as we're concerned, it's a perfect summer evening stroll. Scan the QR code below for the full route.

Stanedge The walk starts in Holymoorside and is a fairly strenuous 4.3 miles (including the stretch to Highfield House Farm). It's quite boggy underfoot with stepping stones so perhaps not one to do after heavy rain! Plus you can have a pint at the start or finish (The Bulls Head or The Lamb) or take in a bite to eat half way round (Highfield House Farm, Tyzacks at Stanedge Golf Course or The Red Lion). AGEING BONES Words: Philip Norcliffe (Handle With Care Seniors)
M
y early career in nursing in the 1970s was as a charge nurse in charge of an orthopaedic ward in Barnsley, caring for people with traumatic injuries and degenerative changes to their muscles, bones and joints. Now in my seventies I experience some of those degenerative changes, so this article is written from both a professional and personal perspective. Much of what I have written over the past six months has explored the experience of aging of both the mind and body. In most cases the changes are slow, progressive and to be expected, the tips section at the end is to help identify ways in which some of these changes can be reversed or made better. Minimising the impact on our lives of mainly inevitable reductions in stamina, strength, co-ordination and balance.
The increased risk of fracture is compounded by a lack of mobility, for example, due to a prolonged stay in hospital. Not only are fractures more common in old age, but healing takes much longer. Much has been written recently about HRT and its effect on bone density, see tips at the end for comment.
Muscle changes
Acceptance of and accommodation to changes, enables us to wring the most from our reserves. The wear and tear on the body of working and living into advanced years with cumulative physical and mental stresses is a challenge but well within the capabilities of most of us. Resilience helps us to overcome traumatic and degenerative changes.
Peak muscle mass and strength are reached in the 20s and 30s. This is followed by a gradual decline through middle age. From the age of 60, the loss of muscle tissue accelerates. Older people often experience a loss of strength that can be directly attributed to anatomical and physiological changes in skeletal muscles. On average, we lose 3-8% of lean muscle mass per decade from the age of 30. The loss of skeletal muscle mass leads to a progressive reduction in the support afforded to the bones and joints, which in turn contributes to the postural changes observed in older age. Aged muscles are more prone to injury and take longer to repair and recover. To hold some of these changes at bay, see the tips at the end for comment.
Bone changes
Joint Changes
Studies show that around 90% of peak bone mass is achieved in men by age 20 and women by age 18. Increases continue in both sexes until around the age of 30 when peak bone strength and density is achieved (National Institutes of Health, 2015). Bone density decreases as middle age approaches. Bone loss in both sexes continues into old age, 80-year-olds have approximately half the bone mass they had at its peak in young adulthood. Age-related loss of calcium from the skeleton commonly leads to the bones taking on the porous, sponge-like appearance indicative of osteoporosis (thinning of bones) This contributes to the stooping curvature of the spine often seen in older age.
Page 34
The cartilages in joints play the role of shock absorbers, as well as ensuring the correct spacing and smooth gliding of bones during joint movement. The number and activity of these cartilage-forming cells, decrease with age, which can result in a reduction in the amount of cartilage in important joints, such as the knees. A lack of cartilage results in aged joints becoming more susceptible to mechanical damage and increases the risk of painful bone-to-bone contact that is commonly seen in osteoarthritis. In the UK, around 8.5 million people have joint pain due to osteoarthritis. Certain joints are particularly susceptible; for example, between the ages 55 and 85 years, women lose up to 50% of flexibility and range of motion in their ankles.

Top tips in looking after your bones, muscles and joints: Many factors influence how our bones and skeletal muscles age; genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle all play a role, so there is much individual variation. Preserving the structural and functional integrity of the musculoskeletal system is essential to maintain good health and slow down the progression to frailty. Before undertaking exercise, consult your doctor or physiotherapy Increasing the intake of calcium, vitamin D and lean protein can increase bone density Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) improves bone health in older people: oestrogen HRT and testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) are proven to increase bone density in women and men, respectively, thereby reducing the risk of fracture.
Attending a single exercise class per week and doing some exercise at home can improve muscle strength by 27% Balance and coordination exercises, such as tai chi, can help reduce the risk of falls Older people who exercise in water (which is not weight bearing) may still experience increases in bone and muscle mass compared to sedentary older people. Stretching is another excellent way to help maintain joint flexibility. The next article will be on Heart and Lung Function Philip Norcliffe, Managing Director of Handle With Care Seniors Day Centre Hollingwood Chesterfield S43 2PE. I am a qualified nurse teacher with over 50 years’ experience.
Moderate exercise helps to maintain lean muscle mass, increase bone density and reduce fat accumulation.

Who you say? Their journey began one Summer day in 2000 when John Wheeler and Mike Daly drank roughly enough whiskey to float a battleship from the Florida Coast over to Portugal and back and decided to play around in John’s studio. Hayseed Dixie have evolved into a proper force, one that most people either love, hate, or have never heard of. Their repertoire consists of both original material and reinterpretations of previously rendered songs - and global physical sales in excess of half a million copies, with over 1,200 live shows in 31 different countries. Hayseed Dixie offer up their 15th studio album, a collection of both original songs and reinterpretations of R&B and Soul classics. ‘Free Your Mind And Your Grass Will Follow’ is out now on Hayseed Dixie Records.

Sport Let's recap. So, the problem in my opinion (and yes Chesterfield, we have a problem even though we are in the playoffs) is that Rowe left, not that Cook has taken over. Rowe clearly took with him the winning formula which Cook has yet to fathom. Or did Cook lose the dressing room early on?
It's the playoffs!
Sick bucket?!! I hear you ask. let me explain.
Following the recent run of form since Cook took charge of the team (that Rowe had assembled) Chesterfield have only won 4, drawn 5 and lost 9. Yes, injuries had played a big part in this but as Cook first admitted after the Bromley defeat and after most defeats to the media, we aren't good enough and concede soft goals.
During the press conference before the Woking game, Paul said that getting a place in the playoffs if we beat Woking would make him "physically sick" as he didn't feel we deserved to be there given our recent results.
Is it wise to criticize your players publicly? Debate that yourself. CFC didn’t seem to step up to win the games when needed and make basic errors. So again, do the players want to play for him?
To be honest, I can see his point. At the time of writing, it is 6pm on Sunday 15th May 2022. Chesterfield FC have just played their final league game at home to Woking and we drew 0-0. The first half was poor and the second was better with a few chances. To be honest, we did amazingly make the playoffs, well scrape through to be precise. To be blunt, we miss the likes of Tshimanga.
CFC slipped down the league but was that due to the new manager or due to just being exhausted at the end of a weird, topsy-turvy season? Either way, Cook clearly is not happy as the Chesterfield boss. But will he get us promoted?
Words & Images: Michael South Hello, my fellow Spireites. There's good news and bad news. The good news is, that we made the playoffs! The bad? Paul Cook needs a sick bucket.
Paul Cook has it all to do now with the limited players due to injury, to build a winning football squad for the playoffs. But we need to score to get into League Two, it’s that simple. We haven’t scored in the last three games. CFC fans, myself included, still can't believe the turnaround in form since Paul Cook took charge from Rowe, but somehow, we have made it. Yes, every football manager is different. Yes, every football manager has his own way of working. From his right-hand man and backroom staff to his own choice of players and his own tactics. Yes, it's not as it once was down at the club nowadays since the departure of James Rowe, but with what was handed to Paul Cook for his reprise a few months ago, he has definitely had to hit the ground running.
I am a huge Paul Cook fan, don't get me wrong, but Cook has yet to stamp his mark on the club and bring in his own players to fit around his way of management including his famous player formation. We need it to come ASAP, but I’m sure It will come next season regardless of the league we end up in. Like any manager at a new club, time is key to mould a team. I just hope and pray Cook stays for the long term and can see us into League one as he has promised in the media recently. He’s done it before. Yes, he is a different type of manager than Rowe, which is a good thing if you know what I mean. For now, though, we have to try and take solace in the progress the Spireites have made since 2020. At least we still have a club. I've said before that the club is in a much better place nowadays compared to its recent past… but getting promoted would be nice, wouldn’t it?! COYB’s!

Garden Tips
GARDEN TIPS
Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts
T
his is the busy season in the garden, but, as always, the thing to remember is that it should be relaxing and fun, so don't overdo it or try to stick to some fixed timetable about when things should be done. The changing weather has to be considered. 1. Weeds are usually successful because they grow and set seed quickly, so remove them before they flower. Various types of hoe can prove to be the best solution at this time of year. An ‘onion hoe’ is often considered to be one of the most versatile tools if used regularly to cut off the young weeds before established. 2. If you have fruit, you can improve the size of individual fruits by thinning out the buds. Now is the perfect time to train the stems of blackberries and other hybrid berries on a frame or wires and pruning your currant bushes to help get maximum yields by stopping plants being overcrowded. 3. Summer bedding plants can be planted out now; soak them very thoroughly beforehand and, if the soil is dry, pour water into the planting hole and let it drain away before putting the plants in, although you should still water them in well – this helps the soil settle. 4. Greenhouses heat up very fast in even hazy sunshine, so they will require the maximum ventilation possible and you may wish to consider some form of shading from now onwards. 5. Creating a regular regime of watering, particularly for tomatoes and peppers, will prevent problems like blossom end rot. Make sure that plants receive adequate watering from this time
Page 48
of year and remember to be consistent. This is particularly important for container grown plants and growbags. 6. All danger of frost should have passed, so any tender plants that have been germinated indoors or under cover can be planted out. Lots of vegetable seeds can be sown directly into the ground now e.g. beetroot, carrots, courgettes, cucumbers, peas, pumpkins and radishes. 7. Stake plants that have a tendency to flop over, especially those with big flower heads. Ideally, the stakes should be about 20cm (8”) shorter than the eventual height of the plant, so they’re completely hidden when the plants start to flower. 8. Pinching out the growing tips of broad beans will reduce possible attack by blackfly and it will promote setting rather than excess plant growth. This technique can also be used on many other herb plants and flowers like fuchsias, a few weeks after doing this your plants are bushier and more compact. 9. Keep earthing up potato plants and if you are growing them in pots or containers remember to continue to add more compost or soil. Harvesting some early potatoes can usually start after 10-12 weeks of growth. Boiling your first new potatoes of the season reminds you why you bother to grow your own vegetables! 10. Why not try to grow herbs that have the added advantage of being friendly to butterflies? Hyssop, lavender, marjoram and thyme all provide good nectar for these pollinators and will inspire you in the kitchen too!
