Charlotte Football Club Kicks Off The Editor’s Desk by Samir Shukla The buzz was already in the air when we entered the light rail headed towards downtown at the station near University of North Carolina Charlotte. The cars filled up at each station and upon exiting the fully loaded train, a mass of people, many sporting their new colors, strolled toward Bank of America stadium in uptown Charlotte. The several blocks surrounding the stadium were filled with a diverse and boisterous crowd as they began streaming into the stadium. A new sports era kicked off on March 5, 2022, when the newest Major League Soccer team, Charlotte Football Club, played its first home game in the Queen City. Professional soccer had arrived in Charlotte and the Carolinas, beginning a new sports era. The match took place at BoFA Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers’ owner David Tepper also owns Charlotte FC. The air in the stadium was even more electric and buzzing with excitement, the newness. Charlotte wanted soccer and fans got it, all 74,479 paying fans along with stadium staff, media, and guests. This was not only a record-breaking crowd for a single MLS match, but it was, so far, the 2nd largest soccer crowd in the world this year. When the microphone held by the woman singing the national anthem malfunctioned, the crowd took over immediately, singing and finishing the anthem. This was Charlotte FC’s second official game and their first in their hometown. They lost 3-0 to Washington D.C. United in their first game a few days earlier. Charlotte FC lost this evening 1-0 to the LA Galaxy, but that didn’t matter to the raucous and supportive crowd on this night. They were now fans, in the seats, standing, screaming, waving flags. The expansion team was awarded to Charlotte two years ago. This historic, inaugural match will be remembered by those in attendance for years.

Mental Health and Youth Yoga and Meditation Can Calm the Nervous System

My Voice by Tasneem Sihorwala

Children and teens are experiencing more mental health issues than ever before. According to the American Psychological association an estimated 15 million of our nation’s young people can currently be diagnosed with a mental health disorder. Anxiety, depression, and suicide are all on the rise among young individuals. Big mental problems always start small, therefore it is important to teach a child how to manage their emotional landscape when they are young, so that they can develop better emotional resilience as they grow up. Of course, counseling is of tremendous value when other strategies don’t work but providing them with tools that will help them manage their emotions is also important for their mental wellbeing as an adult. Yoga and meditation are phenomenal tools for managing emotional well-being, stress, and anxiety. Most people associate yoga with purely physical benefits, but research shows that it also helps with mental health issues and emotion regulation. Researchers have found both yoga and meditation can help increase HRV or Heart Rate variability. HRV is simply the distance between one heartbeat to the next. The goal is to try to have an increased HRV because it has been shown to calm the autonomic nervous system and regulate emotions. When someone is feeling stressed or anxious, their breathing gets shallow and their heart may be beating fast. This decreases HRV. But when one is feeling relaxed or is engaging in deep breathing, there is more space between each heartbeat and their HRV is increased. This leads to feeling more emotionally regulated or calm. continued on page 94

Knowledge Kaziranga National Park Kaziranga National Park is situated in the northeastern state of Assam in India. The sanctuary, which hosts two-thirds of the world’s great one-horned rhinos, is a World Heritage Site. Kaziranga is a vast expanse of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests, criss-crossed by four major rivers, including the Brahmaputra. Kaziranga is visited by many rare migratory birds and provides habitat for many threatened species, including tigers, leopards, panthers, bears, wild buffaloes, deer, elephants, and wild pigs, It is the only place where you can find Eastern Swamp Deer. Popularly known as Barasingha, this species has yellow hair and distinctive white spots above their spine. In summer, their coat becomes bright brown. An Elephant Safari is the best way to explore the park and see the areas hidden by tall elephant grass. The best time to visit Kaziranga National Park is between November and April. The history of Kaziranga as a protected area can be traced back to 1904, when Mary Curzon, the wife of the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, visited the area. After failing to see a single rhinoceros, she persuaded her husband to take urgent measures. On June 1, 1905, the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest was created with an area of 232 sq km (90 sq mi). In 2015, the rhino population stood at 2401. Kaziranga was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. It is located on edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot. Mahout-guided elephant rides and Jeep or other 4WD vehicles rides are booked in advance. These trails are open for light vehicles from November to April. Visitors are allowed to take their own vehicles when accompanied by authorized guides.

USA Knowledge Yosemite National Park President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Land Grant on June 30, 1864, protecting the area. Thanks to John Muir’s work to further protect the delicate ecosystem of the High Sierra, Yosemite became a national park on October 1, 1890. Located in California, it is known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, granite monoliths, meadows, ancient giant sequoias, and a vast wilderness area. The park’s diverse landscape supports more than 400 species including amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. At 2,425 feet, Yosemite Falls is one of tallest on the planet. Millions visit from around the world and although the park is open all year, nearly 75 percent of visitors come to the park from May through October. In 2017 Alex Honnold became the first person to reach the top of Yosemite’s 3,000-foot El Capitan wall without ropes. Few people know about the park’s lunar rainbows or moonbows. In the spring and early summer if the sky is clear and the moon is full, it can produce enough light to create a rainbow from a waterfall’s mist. The park has an elevation range from 2,127 to 13,114 feet and contains five major vegetation zones: chaparral and oak woodland, lower montane forest, upper montane forest, subalpine zone, and alpine. Since 2020, a reservation is required to drive into Yosemite National Park during peak hours (6 am – 4 pm) from May 20 through September 30.

Imperialistic Medicine Killing Gentle Microbes It is an established fact among the humorist pundits that the best comedy is based on truth. It turns out that these jokes are based on some elements of truth. I found some articles in medical journals on Healthline and National Library of Medicine that support the fact that the roughly 40 trillion microbes that live in our body, most of which are in our gut, help defend our bodies against outside threats such as viruses, parasites, and bacteria. The microbes create a gentle balance that can be disrupted by a variety of medical treatments, especially antibiotics. Researchers say some antibiotics, including commonly prescribed tetracyclines and macrolides, can kill healthy gut bacteria and advised that people taking antibiotics should eat foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt and sauerkraut. It is hard to explain to my American friends that as a Bania, I am not trying to save money by refusing to take some antibiotics or some pills to suppress symptoms of various flare-ups. My body is holier than Iraq, Afghanistan or even Vietnam. It is not going to be a battleground and face the consequences of mustard gas or some bazooka just because of a minor fever or bad breath. Over 20 years back, my doctor diagnosed me with DNS, deviated nasal septum, and recommended surgery that would alleviate my nasal blockage. He said the DNS would lead to congestion and require frequent antibiotics. At that time, I felt surgery

Raajeev’s Corner by Raajeev Aggerwhil As an Indian American, I am torn between the choice of Western medicine and Eastern medicine. During my last three visits to my doctor, I have consistently failed to buy the medicines prescribed by him. Each time he would ask, “Do you want us to call the local CVS so they will have the prescription ready?” I would say, “No, Doc. Just give me the written prescription and I’ll pick it up.” As I make this excuse, I have some conflicting thoughts going on in my mind. It bothers me that my doctor always prescribes antibiotics which would kill everything in the body. That is the most American way to take care of a problem. “We know there might be a couple of bad guys in there. Bomb everything. It worked in Afghanistan, and it will work here.” I generally don’t question my doctor’s judgement but if I did, it would go something like this. “But Doc, it didn’t work in Afghanistan.” “Of course, it did. We created so many defense contractors’ jobs. It’s the same thing here. If we don’t attack your body with a blitzkrieg of pills, think of the children that might starve in the pharma executives’ households.” Drugs are like a battlefield. If you fire too many pills in the desert, you will end up killing the good guys with the bad guys. “Sure, we killed the virus. But we also wiped out the entire 28th white cell platoon.” Saathee.com

A Crime Called War a wake of destruction that affected not only the soldiers of their time but also the future population.

Namaskar, Y’all by Shyama Parui

Bombardment of religious, educational, and historic buildings…. With destruction of community assets such as temples, mosques, churches, museums and schools, comes the loss of knowledge and wisdom. That loss goes beyond structures and artifacts. The absence of these spaces deprives people of a sense of connection with their past and perhaps disables optimism for the future. Ruins stand as constant reminders of an existence that was brutally obliterated.

What constitutes a war crime? Murder, rape, pillage…. Pick up any history book, dust off its cover, and once you turn its pages you will find that Roman warriors, Mongolian invaders, rival nations, and many more armies were guilty of the above aggressions once they had succeeded in conquering a kingdom or land. These have been the topic of period dramas and perhaps discussions in high school. Its horrific nature compels us to focus on the hapless consequences of war and wonder, why? Did the victors stop viewing the vanquished as humans?

and many more intangible, undefinable crimes, and some even overlooked or forgotten. When news of the Russian invasion of Ukraine broke out, I was listening to the radio. The reporter described a Ukrainian woman walking to the Polish border for safety. Clutching her few belongings, she braved the winter weather for a chance to still breathe. I cannot even begin to imagine what it’s like to flee your home. The place you call your own, your haven, the holder of your treasures, could be blown into bits within seconds shattering what took years to build. I have been overwhelmed with thoughts about all the little things that affect ordinary people trapped between the line of firing. Even though, we are experiencing some relief from the two-year pandemic, the attack on Ukraine by Russia has raised alarm bells worldwide. With this sad

Taking hostages, attacks on civilians, enlisting children to fight… When armed conflict storms into the lives of ordinary citizens it snatches away the innocence of childhood. Books get replaced with weapons, mothers and daughters are thrown into slavery, hostages and captives are subjected to gruesome deaths or forced to lead torturous lives. These dire consequences have occurred regardless of time and place. The Apache and Navajo tribes from America for example were known to avenge deaths or attacks from rival tribes by looting and killing their enemies. Attending Shows In Person or Virtual My Voice by Preethi Sriram

Photos courtesy Hum Sub

I am a student of dance, so for me it is not just the dance. It is learning everything about dance from the theory to the different artists, to trying to understand the Natyashastra text in application, and so forth. As a student of dance, attending shows is a hobby. I look for shows to attend and watch the way a sports enthusiast would look for sports game to attend and watch a football game or basketball. It is a learned hobby passed down to me from my mom as when I was younger, there would always be an event or program to attend. I especially looked forward to the idea that the format for Basant Bahar was geared toward the classical arts. The first official show of the year that I had the delight to be able to attend was Hum Sub’s Basant Bahar in Cary, NC that took place on March 13, 2022. When I first saw that it would be in person (with live streaming option), I had eagerly set aside time to be able to attend the show with my mother. While during the peak of the pandemic, I had enjoyed watching shows streamed online (and I still do and hope to see live streaming options still provided alongside in person), I also relished the opportunity to be able to go in person. continued on page 74

Can Your Home be One of Your Retirement Assets?

The ultimate way to cash in on the home equity is to sell your home for cash and then downsize or rent the next one. But, as mentioned above, most retirees don’t wish to move. So, the alternatives are 1) to borrow from your home equity with, of course, home used as collateral 2) refinance an existing mortgage and take cash out 3) borrow with a home equity loan or line of credit or 4) apply for a reverse mortgage. This is easier said than done, especially for the retirees, because each option comes with opportunities, drawbacks, and costs. Lenders, when lending a reasonably large amount of money to you, want to make sure that they are getting their money back at the end of the deal and will not end up at the short end of the stick. Even though they cannot discriminate against you based on your age they would ascertain in variety of ways that you have the financial ability to repay the loan you have taken. Most common ways of doing that is by asking for paperwork like account statements, 1099 forms for pension and SSA and a review of your 1040 tax forms for last few years. So, get ready for this kind of inquiry. Lenders always wish to see a 2-year history and at least a 5-year future to satisfy themselves. Generally, borrowers with higher credit scores and lower “loan to home value” get the best borrowing rates; this relates well to their fear of determining your ability to repay as mentioned above. If we are looking at reverse mortgage, then it works a bit differently because your ability to repay does not come in the picture, but the deal does need underwriting. No matter how you tap into your home equity, banks and people like attorneys must be involved; you will end up paying many different costs like lender’s origination fee, fees for the third-party services (such as appraisal, title work and recording the lien with the county etc.). These fees can be paid out of pocket or rolled into the loan. There is usually a 3-day cooling-off period (love that terminology) if you decide to back off from the deal. Most seniors, with home equity to tap into, are good candidates for refinancing. It is so because either home is completely paid off, free and clear or probably their interest rate is high compared to what they could probably get these days. They can either refinance and improve their interest rate considerably or take a new loan and get the cash out of the home equity. The fact that their home may have appreciated in value helps too

Personal Finances by Mo Vidwans

According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, individual home equity accounts for almost half of the median net worth of retirees, depending on age. Collectively, homeowners aged 62 and older have a record of $6.5 trillion of tappable equity. These days we have heard that word Trillion more often than ever before, courtesy of what our Federal Government is trying to do for this country but believe me that is a very large number. Many Financial Planners would say and do believe that tapping the home equity wealth in retirement, at least seriously considering it, makes sense if done wisely for the right reasons and even more importantly the right way. For example, that money can be used to pay off high-priced credit card debts, remodel a home with features to assist you age in place (this is a desire of a very high percentage of people; they do not wish to leave their neighborhood, neighbors and familiar surroundings and who can blame them for that), delay starting social security monthly payments until you qualify for the maximum payout (which happens at your age of 70), buy long-term care insurance or pay the tax bill for the ROTH conversion. Note that I did not mention taking a long vacation or financing someone’s education or a wedding for that matter. The cause for which an important source of revenue/income such as home equity should be used is to be considered very carefully and should be justifiable. Your home’s equity could be the lifeline when you need to avoid drawing from your investments during a market downturn. We are very hesitant to withdraw from such funds when the markets are down. I have also assumed that when the markets improve, the equity loans could be satisfied with the withdrawals coming from the market funds. Saathee.com

Diet Wars Living to Age 200 Subcontinental Divide by Ahsen Jillani

Maybe I mentioned it. Maybe I didn’t. My bad diet may be affecting my memory. But a dozen years back was my last (and probably final) trip to Pakistan. My mom and I visited the cancer hospital in Lahore, enjoyed the tremendous hospitality of my cousins, and headed 100 miles south to Sahiwal, which was her childhood home postpartition. Three ageing uncles still occupy various homes on this property, which is an oasis in the middle of a now urban hell. My ulcer was acting up. It was the long trip from America. It was also the realization that my mother was going to die, and this would be my final trip. But sub-continent hospitality is second to none. My cousin’s wife always had one eye pointing toward me at the dinner table. She was noticing I was eating about half a roti with water. The next day there were milder lentil and rice dishes for me. I was stunned. But a week out getting into Sahiwal, I had another encounter with the culture of my mother’s family. The driver got lost, and my memories dating back to 1976 were not serving me well in the new urban sprawl. I asked several people along the way where Civil Lines was. They shook their head and said they had never heard of it. Approaching 3:30pm we got to the one uncle’s house in the back of the compound of three houses and barns and servants’ continued on page 78

Indian Idols Live in Raleigh

Indian Council for Cultural Relations Scholarships Announced Photo by Devang Shah

The top four finalists of the Indian Idol season 12 performed live on March 6, 2022, in Raleigh, NC to a nearly sold-out crowd. They performed in order, with Sayli Kamble opening, followed by Mohammad Danish, Arunita Kanjilal, and Pawandeep Rajan. All four are talented and imbued with a natural stage presence and became hugely popular last year as they were also competing during the height of the pandemic. Each singer performed about half hour sets of a mix of classic and newer songs, and then all four performed several songs together. A local dance group warmed up the crowd before the Idols took stage. The crowd loved all four performers while the headliner and winner Pawandeep Rajan showcased his vocal range singing a medley of songs along with couple of full songs while strumming along with an acoustic guitar. The quartet performed about dozen shows throughout the United States during March.

Basant Bahar 2022 Charlotte International Arts Festival Launches in the Fall

Photo Hub Sub

After a two-year hiatus, spring returned to the Cary Arts Center with Basant Bahar 2022. Hum Sub presented this year's theme "Sattva-Guna of Purity", the annual spring show that showcases India’s traditional arts forms. The enthusiastic response from the community was proof that the joy of returning to a more “normal” calendar was not Hum Sub’s alone. The spirit shown by the young dancers and the commitment to the arts of the choreographers is what made the event successful. The afternoon began with a tribute to that doyenne of Indian music, Lata Mangeshkar, whose soulful voice touched the hearts of so many on the subcontinent for decades. Gobi Manchurian

Saathee RECIPES

By Taige Shukla Gobi (cauliflower) Manchurian is an Indo-Chinese dish commonly used as an appetizer, but can also be served along-side Asian inspired rice or noodles. Our Saathee chef, Taige Shukla, prepared this recipe in less than 45 minutes and chose to serve it with Sesame Garlic Noodles. Manchuria is found in North East Asia, so this recipe marries the sweet and sour flavors of China in the North, with the spicy and aromatic flavors of India in the South. This Indo-Chinese starter is typically fried and covered in the Manchurian gravy, however we were sure to include a “healthy” option in the recipe by providing baking instructions as well. Watch the recipe video at Saathee.com/Taige.

Ingredients 1 head of cauliflower (cut into about 20 florets) For Batter: ¾ cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup corn starch 1 tsp ginger garlic paste ½ tsp chili powder ½ cup water Salt & Pepper For Manchurian gravy : 2 tbsp vegetable oil 2 garlic cloves (finely chopped) 1 inch ginger (finely chopped) 1 green chili (halved) ¼ red onion (chopped) 2 tbsp green onions (chopped) ½ bell pepper (cubed) 2 tbsp ketchup 1 tsp Sriracha (chili-garlic sauce) 2 tsp soy sauce 2 tsp lemon juice or vinegar Salt & pepper

Saathee.com

Directions

Recipe serves 4-6

1

Start by boiling the cauliflower florets in salted water for 3-4 mins. Drain cauliflower and run under cold water to stop it from cooking further. Set aside. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2

Now start on the batter by combining ¾ cup of all-purpose flour, ¼ cup of corn starch, 1 tsp of ginger garlic paste, ½ tsp of chili powder (feel free to add or subtract from this measurement depending on your spice tolerance), salt & pepper to taste, and ½ cup of water. Whisk ingredients together until smooth to form batter. Take previously boiled cauliflower florets and cover each one with batter. To fry: boil oil on medium flame and fry florets until golden brown then place aside on paper towel. To bake: place battered florets on oiled baking sheet then spray tops of them with oil. Bake for 20 minutes.

3

While florets bake, prepare the Manchurian gravy in a medium skillet with the stove set on medium-high heat. Start with 2 tbsp of vegetable oil, then add 2 cloves of chopped garlic, 1 inch of chopped ginger, and 1 green chili cut into two pieces. Sauté for 2-3 minutes. Now add in ¼ of a red onion chopped, 2 tbsp of chopped green onions, and ½ of a bell pepper cubed.

4

Finally add 2 tbsp of ketchup, 1 tsp of Sriracha (or any chili-garlic sauce), 2 tsp of soy sauce, 2 tsp of lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste. Now mix 1 tsp of cornstarch with ¼ cup of water, then add mixture to the gravy. Stir until gravy thickens. (Optional: Here you can add a tbsp of brown sugar if you wish to add a little sweetness to the dish). Add in fried cauliflower and cover with gravy. Garnish with green onion and serve as a starter or along-side Asian noodles or rice.

they continue their journey as well within the Indian arts as it is a lifelong gift that can continue to bring joy and enlightenment.

My Voice

continued from page 48

Each piece that was presented during the show was beautiful. There was a piece that was artistic in showing the goals of yoga. One can see yoga everywhere these days: it seems quite diverse from “hot” to “goats” to “beer.” While all of those have their own place in the modern world, it was nice to also see yoga and its roots and its purpose to the individual. The item demonstrated how yoga is a way to have control over one’s emotions. It was especially enjoyable to listen to the narration and the narration mentioning of how classical Indian dance is considered a type of yoga. Another classical dance that I enjoyed watching was a fusion of the classical Indian dance styles of Kathak and Bharatanatyam. While both styles are unique in identity and form, and are from different regions of India, the merging of the two styles was a journey for the audience. The feeling of “unity in diversity” and harmony was created by the dancers seamlessly combining unique steps so that it blended so well, that the viewer is left spellbound. Another dance focused on the story of Prahlada and his father Hiranyakashipu. The story showed the devotion of Prahlada and the tyranny of Hiranyakashipu. The devotion of Prahalada to Vishnu and the tyranny of Hiranyankashipu brings the form of Narasimha, the half lion, half man who breaks out of pillar to help his devotee and reveals the form of Vishnu. I saw the Purana story of Ganesh, and how he got his elephant head, enacted by talented children through the semi classical form of dance. Another piece was a classical singing piece called “Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya.” I have heard the term, but only until recently, know the translation of the term. The piece is a bhajan to Lord Krishna. Throughout the piece, I felt not only the technique of the group, but the bhakti. In certain philosophical theories, it is believed that chanting and singing the names of the different Gods brings the presence and benevolence of the divinities. My surroundings were electrified with their singing and chanting. The bhajan for that moment, made me understand Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a 15th century saint. The peace that can come when immersed in the bhajans is experiential learning at its finest. What I really enjoyed of attending Basant Bahar is that it felt that I was learning and experiencing the traditional cultural and philosophical stories of India through the medium of the arts. These are stories I have grown up with, such as the story of Narasimha, and learning more of Ganesh and his parents Shiva and Parvathi, or of trying to understand more about yoga and its intent, or finally to live in a moment of immersed in the feeling of bhakti. All the performances were amazing and each of the performers and individuals did an amazing job. The Indian arts take a lot of time and dedication, and I hope Saathee.com

turn of events, a painful realization dawned on me. Ever since I was old enough to develop my vocabulary, I had heard the word “war” mentioned in news telecast, radio broadcasts, and coffee table conversations around me. I was born when the Vietnam war was almost over, but it gave way to an intense Cold War. Try as they may, Indians cannot erase the scars in our collective memories left by the Partition and the short but virulent wars with Pakistan and China at the border. Like stealthy commandos, reference to these skirmishes infiltrated innumerable debates for as long as I can remember. In elementary school, I read about the Iran-Iraq War in the Reader’s Digest and Time as they were the few international magazines that I had access to. Then of course the 90’s started off with the Gulf War and more tumult followed in the years to come, which may be fresh in our minds. These examples are far from comprehensive and does not even include internal clashes or full-fledged vendetta against ethnic minorities by leaders of their own land. An eternal tragedy is playing out with some part of this planet being always ravaged by war. COVID 19 has wiped out over 6 million of the global population in just two years so, one would surmise that the pain of death has taught the world to prioritize life. Alas, that is wildly optimistic. Russia is being accused of war crimes but isn’t the act of war a crime in itself? I see it as a colossal offense that continues to haunt its victims for generations through trauma, poverty, illness, and a vortex of unresolved of emotions in their hearts. Certain scenarios compel us to fight the good fight, justifying revolutionary methods for correcting wrongdoing. Even the Bhagavat Gita, the revered Hindu scripture, is set in Kurukshetra’s gory battlefield with warriors shedding the blood of their brethren. Lord Krishna advises Arjuna to fight for the sake of duty, treating alike happiness and distress, loss and gain, victory and defeat. The turmoil however is metaphorical. The actual war is our internal struggle to want and own wealth, power, and fame. Transcending these needs is said to bring inner peace and the only hope for amity around the world. Is it foolhardy to wish or pray for this cosmic goal? Shyama Parui is a longtime North Carolina resident and ardent writer. You can reach her at Shyamashree_Parui@hotmail.com 74

with vegetables. I switched from vegetables to nuts and berries. I was always hungry or feeling sick to my stomach. Go from Keto to Palio to Atkins to Flexitron to Omicron to Telepathetic, and you still feel like you ate a rock and are going to die. In the end, it is about the Hakimwala, “Bawa”. The overeating royals eating pounds of food, downing gallons of wine, chewing on thousands of calories of sweets all the while watching dancing girls and jesters doing funny magic tricks – it is an addiction. Food can be as damaging as heroin or alcohol or tobacco. Food is a privilege. We are a fairly recent tribal culture that came out of a world where we walked all day and scavenged for roots, herbs, insects, small game, and fruit. Yeah, the Mediterranean Diet may add 13 years to your life, but not in the serving portions we demand in the West. Those cultures don’t eat like they are at the Golden Corral buffet. The secret most researchers have stumbled upon is that people on these best diets in the world is their meals are a slow and relaxed community affair. You nibble, you talk, you laugh, you hug, you toast the newborns and the dead. You walk home slowly. You don’t need a full belly. You eat like Bawa – who died of a stroke at 61, but that’s life too.

quarters. He hadn’t eaten yet, waiting for his eldest sister to arrive. When my mother took the first bite of the chicken curry, he then waited for her to nod a “Yes” and then started to eat. My other uncle invited us to his house the next day for a feast for my mother, and despite having servants, stood behind my mother instead of eating himself. He would put spoons full of various items in her plate and fold the hottest roti and put it neatly in her plate throughout the meal. That was love. But my mother died anyway. And all of us lost the tremendous cultural ecosystem from Panipat, India, that she was – and with her and some of the elder of the nine children of my grandfather, the world slowly eroded into something modern, something – well, a double cheeseburger and pizza with extra onions. My mother’s side of the family for generations were called the Hakimwalas. They were rumored to be the physicians to the royal families. The dusty remnants of my grandfather’s medical mixtures were still there in glass cabinets when I visited in the late 60s and early 70s. But more important than the tinctures of “Bawa” were his sayings, which have become legendary. Sixty years after his death, the ageing uncles and aunts still repeat them to great grandkids who snicker while flipping through social media on their phones. But Bawa was an aristocrat – a high official in the British Raj. And he had a rule for everything. Women did not get any piercings. They needed to stay pure. You did not part your hair in the same place daily. You did not want to meet your maker with a man-made part in your hair. And, yes, women never entered the kitchen. That was for the servants. So, when on the raised platform “tukth” on the covered porch, summer eves, the servants would lay down the “dusturkhans”, decorated tablecloths, and 2025 family and visitors would cross their legs and sit around it and pass two or three bowls of thin curry around, I would watch in amazement. I was kind of hungry after playing in the summer heat all day. There was no shortage of food. The servants would end up eating most of it. But ... you ate one roti and stopped. Bawa and his teachings were hovering over you. Nobody emptied the food bowl. The last of it went back to the kitchen. My father’s side of the family were Punjabi. You pretty much got cholesterol poisoning right at breakfast with half a gallon of hot milk with cream floating on top – and when you thought that was a filling breakfast, well, here came the cholay, puri, 4 fried eggs, parathas, leg of lamb, roasted car tire, and maybe even the grilled dhoti of my grandpa. Most of them died in their 40s and 50s. But they died smiling and with full bellies. I have been through a lot of dietary research in the last few years due to diabetes. I swapped meat and dairy Saathee.com

would be an overkill and seemed a bit extreme, so I decided not to pursue that path. I didn’t want to offend him by saying that Western medicine is imperialistic and is designed to kill and conquer. Even though Eastern medicine is holistic, grounded in non-violence, it has its own short comings. Eastern doctors are inclined to ask, “Can we live with minor discomfort? If we give it some more time, it may decide to go away on its own.” They view bacteria as tenants living in our bodies. “Let’s give the tenant a 30day eviction notice that we might someday actually enforce. Who is to say that a bunch of bad bacteria don’t have the same rights living inside your skin as you do?” I visited this Ayurvedic doctor in India for help with some skin issues. He said, “Look at the bacteria/virus as a homeless encampment. You need to approach them with understanding and support in the form of a poor diet and lack of exercise.” “But Doc the irritation really bothers me.” “I think we need to approach it slowly, with some incense and some peppers and whatever else I can find around this place.” I said, “Doc, that’s not a medical plan. That’s a gift basket.” Over the course of years, I have tried to come up with an unscientific practical balance that works for me. I try to listen to my body. For minor discomforts, I try to determine the root cause of the problem. If I have a headache, is my body trying to tell me to relax? Can I fix it with a hot shower, a bit of meditation or a nap? If it’s something major, I do rely on my Western doctors for their accurate diagnosis. Their reconnaissance is excellent thanks to their ultrasound, sonograms, and images from satellites and spy planes that give a comprehensive view of the bad guys. However, when it comes to taking action, it is a complex decision and after gathering all the facts, I rely on my gut. For my DNS, my procrastination to delay surgery and listen to my gut actually worked. Over the years, my regular meditation and Yogic breathing exercises, helped with frequent blockages and virtually eliminated the need for any decongestants and antibiotics. For other allergies and skin irritations, I have found Ayurvedic and Homeopathic medicines to be more effective and helped get to the root of the problems. What combination of Western, Eastern or Holistic medicine I use is a personal choice and depends on the criticality and urgency of the situation. Sometimes when you are ready to throw in the towels, you need the blitzkrieg of imperialistic pills, a scalpel, or a dagger to annihilate the latoon-ke-bhoot, the stubborn bad guys! Often, I have found the peaceful approach to be more effective, less pills more peace. And I avoid my pharma rep friends as much as possible. Raajeev Aggerwhil is a Los Angeles-based comedian. because now they can borrow even more cash out. Currently the average national fixed rate has hit an alltime low of 2.9 percent for a 30-year mortgage and 2.4 percent for a 15-year mortgage; there could be some mortgage points involved according to Freddie Mac. I should point out, however, that these rates are going up slowly since Federal Reserve has already started tightening their lending rates. It is always prudent to look at the Tax angle of all these transactions because many rules have changed over the last few years. The cost of tapping your equity may be reduced on your Federal Tax return. If you itemize, interest on up to $750,000 of mortgage or home equity debt (for married filing jointly) is deductible to the extent that the money was used to buy, build or improve your home. If you refinance, take cash out and pay for a car or vacation the interest on that amount cannot be deducted. The interest accrued on reverse mortgage would not be deductible until you repay the loan which typically happens when the house is sold which is generally when you leave the house for whatever reason. Financial gains along with a higher status are waiting for you as a reward. Destiny will boost your confidence through its blessings. You will also enjoy good health this month. A meaningful long-distance journey is also possible. Welcome all of life’s changes.

A decision at the beginning of the month may lead you towards a grave mistake. Use your intellect and follow protocol to avoid any further damages. A powerful boost from family may help in developing your career / business as this is a very positive time for focusing on new ventures and opportunities. Learn more about real estate market and invest in properties, if possible.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Capricorn (December 22 – January 21)

Fun and happiness along with high self-esteem should keep this month very positive. A steady rise in income and a busy work period could make time to fly for you. Love and support from your partner are most welcome. Be prepared to travel during the second half of the month. You may have to manage unwanted expenses, but you could also enjoy opportunities to expand your career or enter new ventures.

This will be an excellent month for your career. A slew of new opportunities or decision-making situations should come your way. Accept assistance from your siblings for some of these. You will work hard and move towards a whole new life. Your health will remain excellent, and your family will support you. A temporary uncertainty in finances could also be there.

Aquarius (January 22 – February 18)

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

You could miss a big opportunity due to carelessness this month. Laziness and family issues may blind you from discovering something favorable. Remain sincere and work against your beliefs to grasp that once in a lifetime opportunity. Don’t listen to your friends for now, but you should maintain a flow of income and enjoy good health. You may take short vacations but don’t lose focus for long-term changes.

After a minor setback in social relations, things should fly this month. Take enough rest to recover quickly. This month may prove to be financially positive. A misunderstanding with friends could damage your reputation. This is a favorable time for travel. You may participate in a well-planned event during the second half of the month. Don’t forget to use your sixth sense.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Virgo (August 23 – September 21)

Now is the time to take control and earn some well-deserved respect. Remain focused on helping and supporting people around you. Destiny will favor you in multiple ways. Try to not depend on others, make your own decisions. You may also enjoy spending money on luxury and leisure along with charity related activities. Start thinking positive and make quick decisions.

Luck is on your side as far as monetary gains are concerned, but you may start seeing new health problems during the second half of the month. Listen to your partner in regard to important social and health-related issues. This is a good time for changes, either in your career or residence. Financial calculations will help create monetary boons. You may face disagreements with your child; take it easy. Saathee.com

My Voice Yoga

continued from page 22

CaroMont Family Medicine

Yoga practices help calm the nervous system by stimulating the vagus nerve, an important nerve that originates from the brain and travels to different organs like the heart, lungs, stomach and intestine. It is part of the parasympathetic nervous system which is the rest and digest system. For optimal mental health we need the parasympathetic nervous system to be dominant. Yoga, mindfulness meditation, and breath work increase the vagal tone. In a 2016 study from Carnegie Mellon University Published in Biological Psychiatry, 35 test subjects practiced mindfulness meditation as a means to handle life’s stressors. After only four months, subjects demonstrated healthy vagal tone. Yoga and meditation practices additionally help with increasing focus and improving memory, which leads to better academic performance. Studies using MRI scans and other brain imaging technology have shown that people who regularly did yoga had a thicker cerebral cortex (which is the area of the brain responsible for information processing, and the hippocampus, (which is the area of the brain involved in learning and memory) compared with nonpractitioners. Additionally, yoga can affect mood by elevating levels of a brain chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is associated with having a better overall mood and having decreased anxiety. Parents spend a lot of time, effort, and money to ensure that their child gets the best education and access to the best extracurricular activities, but parents may not give much thought to addressing the child’s or teens mental wellbeing, because most of the time they are not aware that there could be any potential problems. In my daily work of teaching yoga and mindfulness meditation to the youth, I have realized that they have problems, and their problems are real, but they may choose not to confide in their parents for multiple reasons. The child may not want to discuss problems because they feel that the parents may not understand their problems or trivialize the issue. Another reason is that parents may approach a child’s problem with a “fix it,” attitude, being quick to offer solutions on how they could or should be handling the problems. Our children do not need to be fixed; they just need to be understood. They need to be empowered with tools that will help them manage their world with ease.
