“Music is love in search of a word.”
- Sidney Lanier
Digging a hole in the ground one day on land we recently acquired, a tree root and a stone blocked the shovel. The root was wrapped around the lodged stone, both relaying an unspoken notice that I would need to work harder with the shovel in hand to finish the needed hole. I dug around the stone and poked away at the root with the tip of the shovel. Sweeping aside the dirt to pick up the rather large stone, the root, a portion of it shredded by the shovel, held its ground. Who knows how far it stretched underground, the nearest large tree was about 20 feet away. The root didn’t want to let go of its buddy, attaching itself to the thinner part of the long stone.
I don’t generally enjoy doing yardwork. This land is different. It is more than just a yard. Here’s the thing, going from the typical small front and back yards of a home we owned and then moving to many acres of land we now inhabit gives a sense of vastness, a sense of a new frontier, along with confusion. We want to remake this land, but where to start? Now with many acres of land we own, the yardwork of past years seems like child’s play. This is no longer yardwork; it is now all about acres work.
We are clearing land. Doing some digging here and there. Pulling out fallen branches and twigs from the overgrowth before we clear it with a mower. We worked in the comfortable springtime sun, the ground beneath had that pleasing wet soil aroma from a drizzle the previous night. There was a steady breeze keeping sweat at bay on this mid-spring day. The glorious summer is just a few rainfalls away, just about knocking at the door. In the dark chasms of winter, I long for summer, practically on an hourly basis. I enjoy all seasons, winter, not so much. The cold nights of winter have their moments and a quiet aura, but I generally wish winter came with a fast forward button.
We keep clearing the land, overgrown weeds, and bushes around nearby trees, collecting fallen logs and sticks and setting them aside.
This land reminds me of one of my favorite film genres: Westerns. In Western lore and films, the pilgrims and frontier people load up and head out in their wagons, point them towards West and eventually find or acquire plots of land, sometimes huge plots of land, and then proceed to work the land to make it into a homestead. They build a home, fenced fields for horses and animals, clear pastures, plant stuff, dig the requisite well for water.

A couple of months ago, my wife casually mentioned that she was invited to participate in a fashion show called Fabulous Moms. It would be a showcase featuring about 25 moms and would be at the Sheraton Cerritos in the Los Angeles area a week before Mother’s Day. She wanted my opinion about participating in it. I am a proponent of trying out new things that are out of your comfort zone, if they are not life-threatening and don’t cost an arm and a leg.
I was supportive. I could also sense that she really wanted to do it. Not just supporting her but encouraging her was the right thing to do.
To be honest, I didn’t think it was a big deal. It was not a fashion show in Milan. Let’s face it. Cerritos is not Milan or Paris. This show was catering to an Indian audience. Cerritos and Artesia, both suburbs of Los Angeles, are part of Little India. There wouldn’t be any press or major publicity.
In all the years we have been married, I have not viewed my wife as a glamorous type. If you were to compare her to
Bollywood actresses, her personality and style matches that of Juhi Chawla or Deepti Naval, as opposed to glamorous Aishwarya Rai or Raveena Tandon. She grew up in Ojhar, near Nasik, a small town in Maharashtra, where most people knew each other. All the people who lived in that township were employees of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, a company responsible for manufacturing MIG fighter planes in collaboration with the Russians. She grew up watching fighter planes and dreamed of becoming a pilot herself. In fact, after high school, she applied to become a pilot at an aviation school in Mumbai without telling her friends. Unfortunately, her application was rejected because she didn’t have 20/20 vision.
She was also subject to incessant teasing, mostly from the boys in her high school. To avoid drawing unnecessary attention, she got giant black glasses to hide her face. In her picture, she looked as if she were going scuba diving! In her stand-up routine, she talks about a time when a family friend came to visit with his two sons. She was so shy she just hid under the bed. Destiny made her confront her fears by making her spend time surrounded by men – our three

What would you rather be? A depositor or borrower?
It depends, if benefits of borrowing outweigh benefits of lending, borrowing is preferred. Such was the case this past decade when historic low interest rates deterred savers and encouraged borrowing - spurring home buying, car purchases, student loans and high-end purchases. The “Buy Now Pay Later” phenomenon took off during the pandemic and is still strong.
You may be familiar with US Debt ceiling. This is not just a national debt issue, though, as we’re grappling with it at a household level, too. We have a spending problem.
Pre-pandemic, credit card debt was $927 billion. As of 2023, credit card debt is $50 billion higher at $986B whereby 46 percent of people carry personal debt from month to month.
You may ask - how may this be applied to me?
In more ways than one:
We earn so we can spend. One of the golden rules of financial planning is never spend more than you earn. Yet, with the ease of plastic cards, it’s a payWave here, a swipe there and those generous credit limits appear to be an extension of our earning potential. Therein lies the problem.
As of May 3rd, 2023 the Federal Reserve Bank has raised the benchmark interest rate to 5.1 percent, the highest it has been since 2007, to stem rising inflation. This directly affects the prime rate on your credit card and the mortgage interest rate.
Reality appears differently for everyone because it is seen through different eyes that have gone through different experiences. Our past experiences are hidden in our everyday thoughts and actions. We form assumptions about the world and ourselves based on our past experiences. For example, if you fail a math test, you may believe that you will fail every single math test that follows because you believe that you are horrible at math. We unintentionally predict the outcome of an event even before we attempt it. The past holds power over us, leading us to believe that we don’t have any control over the present. We are born with a clear lens of the world. This hypothetical lens isn’t yet tainted with the worry of failure. Our brain has no past experiences to look back on to make a judgement of situations that we face. If we had no prior knowledge of earth or people, we would see how reality really is, without any blurry vision.
I was a happy kid who sang whenever I could find the time, annoying my parents endlessly by unleashing my screechy voice in the middle of the night. One bad solo changed my passion and changed the way I saw myself. I forgot the lyrics in my Elementary school choir, and it felt like the worst mistake that I had ever made. In reality, the worst mistake I had ever made was to be silent for a whole year after that performance. I refused to sing even though it was previously my whole world. My clear lens became blue and I felt sorrow every time I heard my friends happily singing and joking around. I desperately wanted to join them but at the same time, I never wanted to feel the dread of forgetting the words ever again.
It is important to find the point of origin of your fears. Why are you scared of your upcoming math test? If you dig deep into the past, you will uncover the memory that all this fear stemmed from. Ask yourself this: just because I failed miserably in that one memory, does that really mean that the same thing will happen again? When I finally challenged the belief that I was bad at singing after a year of silence, I laughed at how silly it was. I rewatched my old Elementary school performance and realized that it was not a total trainwreck like how it was in my mind. My blue colored lenses had created an illusion that it was a trainwreck. Today, the only lenses that I wear are prescription clear colored glasses. I want to see reality through those glasses - not the glasses that filter out everything positive in the world.

It is important to find the point of origin of your fears.
The pace of change that has been occurring on both the state and federal level in the field of immigration is dizzying. The recent sunset of COVID-era Title 42 rules led to a media frenzy of the expected waves of migrants crashing upon the southern border, which in turn have led to several state-level rules that have made immigration the hot button political issue of the summer. The passion that surrounds the immigration debate has resulted in federal and state-level action, the wisdom of which are debatable.
For starters, Title 42 was a policy that made the expulsion of migrants from the United States easier by citing to the public health risk associated with the pandemic. Because the federal government ended the pandemic designation associated with COVID-19, by rule, the regulations associated with Title 42, including the ability to prohibit individuals from entering the United States, also lapsed. As a result of the expected migrant surge, the Biden Administration proactively sent 1500 active-duty troops to the US-Mexico border in hopes of freeing up the ability of Customs and Border Patrol officers to handle the processing of these individuals.
President Biden also put in place various policies to try to stem the flow of illegal border crossers, including the requirement to schedule an appointment through the CBPOne app and a requirement that any individuals seeking asylum must first show they applied and were rejected from third-party countries. These steps were coupled with increased options for humanitarian parole for individuals from Haiti, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba. Biden also has sought to beef up staffing levels by adding asylum officers and immigration judges. Ultimately, the challenges at the southern border are a numbers game with the government often unable to match the sheer breadth of migrants desperate for a better life. For example, on Monday, May 8, 2023 and again on Tuesday, May 9, nearly 10,000 individuals were apprehended by Border Patrol officers at the US-Mexico border – a sustained enforcement approach to such sheer

The ninetieth annual American Dance Festival (ADF) promises a summer of 32 performances in a variety of venues at Duke University in Durham, NC. The festival takes place from June 8 – July 22, 2023, and August 22, 2023. Whether you enjoy traditional Indian, classical ballet, any kind of contemporary, or any kind of dance or theatre, there will be many things to delight you this summer.
The season begins with a bang with several troupes backto-back. Opening night is June 8 featuring BODYTRAFFIC, also performing on June 10 with Rennie Harris Puremovement performing on June 9.
Several troupes perform a Saturday 1pm matinee especially for children, who are always welcome at all performances. Of course, contemporary art of all kinds almost by definition pushes the envelope on user experiences so parents may want to review performance descriptions on the ADF website.
The website includes a compelling five-minute video montage of performances.
We are lucky to have here in North Carolina one of the most acclaimed dance festivals, attracting audiences and students from many states and countries. Performances may go beyond what some perceive as “dance” and include a significant theatrical component and ideas to contemplate. Here are a few June dances that I am particularly looking forward to enjoying.
I’ve seen Rennie Harris Puremovement several times and reviewed their shows in Saathee. Rennie Harris will be receiving a lifetime achievement award before the June 9th evening show. Their movement and music derive from classic soul, hip-hop, and Africana, and present a nice grounded but sometimes abstract form that speaks to diverse audiences. Their Nuttin’ But A Word promises to be an invigorating and entertaining performance borrowing from many dance vocabularies.
Pilobolus is one of my favorite dance theater groups and they return June 23 and 24. They have particularly creative pieces where dancers seemingly effortlessly create impossible configurations with their bodies while often including significant humor. Students will kick off their shows with short shadow performances.
I am intellectually drawn to the works of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company though they are often hardhitting and sobering. I fondly remember their homage to President Lincoln several years ago but also have seen pieces that I found difficult. I’m excited to see their June 29 and 30 shows Curriculum II that probes into academic ideas of what makes us human.
One of the exciting things about ADF is how some of the dances are at more intimate spaces. While I miss their shows at the Durham Performing Arts Center, in a sense I am glad that they are this season firmly at Duke with its smaller venues including more audience-immersed von der Heyden Theater at the Rubenstein Arts Center (“the Ruby”) and the Nasher Museum of Art. I am looking forward to staibance’s July 1 and 2 shows at the Ruby where modern dance is used
Who can be considered a “dancer?”
I am an adult Indian dance student, and the concept of age can come into play at various junctures. At what age is a good age to start dance? When doing a quick online search on what age to start Bharatanatyam, the first answer that shows up in the search is the age of six. After an average of 7-8 years of instruction and practice, the student may be eligible for an Arangetram at the age of 14. That may be the most well-known traditional path, but it is interesting to see a different trend in dance in general. For instance, what about those who were not initially put in dance at the age of six, or they may have stopped dance in between and want to pick up the dance form again. At what age then would be a good time to start the dance?
This seems to be a less well-defined area and a newer path that is being created in society from its prior iterations. Also, with globalization, and the topics of diversity, equity and inclusion being subjects of focus, people are reassessing
traditional norms and paradigms that may have been held. In the arts, this is something that also is being reassessed. Specifically, in dance, who can be considered a “dancer?” Should the dancer have a certain look? What sort of physical abilities should the dancer have? In a traditional paradigm, we may think “Oh the dancer should be fit” or the “dancer should be able to hear and see” or the “dancer should not have two left feet” or “oh the dancer should be of this background for this style of dance” and so forth. But then there are those who challenge these paradigms and help us to see the world differently.
For instance, in an article in the Times of India, a teacher of dance, notes that very few people realize that she had low vision. As a student, she had to forgo her chemistry course and instead took an academic course in Bharatanatyam, and then earned a diploma for teaching dance. The teacher notes how she is proud of being the first visually impaired person to take up dancing. In a post by TheBetterIndia a young girl who started dancing at the age of five, and then lost her left leg at the age of 11, could have decided to stop dancing, but
College Admissions Insider
by Violet WeiWhat is the secret to getting an acceptance letter versus a rejection?
Ultimately, it comes down to the resume. Accepted students have more than just strong academics; they also have been heavily involved in school clubs, volunteer work, and other extracurricular activities.
At Moon Prep, we’ve interviewed dozens of admissions officers and students at top schools, BS/MD programs, medical schools, and summer programs to learn what they are looking for in their applicants. One recurring theme emerged: passion. Admission officers want students who are passionate about a particular thing and figure out a way to use that passion to impact their community. These passion projects can be anything: a research project, a nonprofit, inventions, or advocating for a particular cause.
Here are five passion project examples from real students who were accepted at the most competitive colleges, BS/MD Programs, and summer camps in the world.
Michael San Francisco, the dean of Clark Scholars, a competitive research summer program, has worked with top students who have gone on to study at Harvard University, Stanford University, Princeton University and more. In an interview with Moon Prep, he shared one passion project that stood out to him. Through the Clark Scholars program, the student worked with Dean San Francisco to refine a water-purifying device from an environmental perspective. After the program ended, she entered it into national science fairs and won multiple awards. Her project was eventually recognized by President Obama, and Popular Mechanics endorsed her water-purifying device as one of the top ten inventions of the year.
We interviewed Nidhi Bhaskar, a first-year medical student at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and a student in the PLME program. An
activity that she dedicated time to in high school was a nonprofit called New Boundaries for Youth. Bhaskar created an annual competition for middle school students across South India, where she helped them research and build action plans related to environmental sanitation and sustainability.
She also trained as a first responder through the Community Emergency Response Team of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). Bhaskar leveraged this experience to create a similar program at her high school and five other schools to train fellow students about first aid and emergency preparedness.
Maite Ballestero, the Executive Vice President of Programs and Administration, revealed that for RSI’s competitive summer program, they would prefer to see students have fewer activities where they can expand more heavily on their passions. “We want students to find out what they are passionate about and explore it deeply.”
She also wants students to “exploit their surroundings in the most positive way.” Some examples she gave were getting research published, earning a gold medal in Science Olympiad, or attending summer programs within your field of passion.
Professor Lewis Hamilton, the dean of the Albert Dorman Honors College at NJIT, is especially interested in seeing how people serve their communities. In an interview with Moon Prep, he spoke about various students who had started nonprofits, including ones focused on tutoring underprivileged students, distributing menstrual products, or empowering women in South Asia to become entrepreneurs. He even spoke about a student who was a beekeeping enthusiast who started his own business selling honey.
“What we are interested in is how you are serving your community. The advice we give students is to find what ignites their passion and then do it at the highest level possible, at whatever level they are capable of,” Professor Hamilton said.

We usually do not pay much attention to debt; this is probably because in the backs of our minds, we think there is plenty of time to take care of matters. The bottom line is, that for many of us, some form of debt will still hang over our heads during retirement.
And then we face the situation of living with a very fixed source of income stream and an expense that grows at least by the inflation rate if not more.
The best scenario is that we have paid off all our debts before we retire. What kind of debts/loans am I talking about here? The most common ones are student loans that we started back in our college days or later but there are others. Credit card debts, home mortgages are quite common but there are car loans, medical loans and hopefully we did not have to go through any home and medical emergency that we were not expecting.
For a growing number of retirees, the golden years are awash in red ink. According to a recent survey by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Sudies, 4 in 10 retirees cite paying off debt as a current and urgent priority. Consequently, they have also found that one in seven bankruptcy filers are 65 or older. Needless to say, there is no room screw-up in retirement.
Declining income or fixed income with reduced buying power and rising medical expenses are the leading causes of older Americans’ financial distress. Ideally, we would enter retirement debt-free except for a low-interest rate mortgage. But life doesn’t deal such nice rolls of dice to everyone and some of us, if not most, face job loss, surprise medical bills or other unforeseen obstacles. Generally, savvy financial moves and strategic belt tightening can tame even the most fearsome debt loads and put us back in control of our destiny and perhaps golden years of retirement.
First step is to take an inventory, yes inventory, of all the debts. We must know what kind of difficult mountain we need to climb. It will include all sources of debt, amounts owed, interest rates charged and repayment terms for sure
and then there could be any special terms or conditions. These include, unloading without penalty larger amounts than our monthly premiums, and possibility of forgiveness or negotiations.
With that chart in front of you, your job, or whoever is helping you, becomes easier. Higher interest loans, like credit card debt, raise their ugly head immediately. Many folks don’t even believe the outstanding balance on the card is a loan and at a very high interest rate too, generally compounding monthly. Currently the credit card interest rates are quite high, ranging about 17 – 18 percent and generally such debts are to be handled first. Many banks are willing to work with you to reduce or to forgive your balances and hence reduce the total loan. It is nice if they do that, but it should be noted that such forgiveness of loans shows up on your 1040 as additional income and you end up paying income tax on it at your usual tax rate. But that is still better than paying the whole amount. Credit card is a convenience and that is how everyone should look at it.
Medical debts could be the next item on your inventory list. They come suddenly and usually are a high number for which we do not have ready cash available. Many do not realize this, but it is possible to negotiate discounts or payment plans directly with the healthcare providers especially when you show that you are not able to pay the full amount. It is best if you take a friend with you, especially the one who knows the system and has done this before. Most medical organizations are more than willing to sit down with you and come up with a feasible plan.
Everyone has heard about transferring the balance to another bank card and not get charged interest on the balance for a while. One must qualify for such transfer and therein lies the rub. A certain amount of discipline needs to be shown to the bank that you will make the payments before they accept your balance. Generally, there is also a fee to transfer.
A growing number of retirees still have mortgage payments when they retire. According to the joint center for housing studies, more than 40 percent of homeowners age 65 and older had a mortgage in 2016; that is a large number and it, perhaps, went up during the pandemic. It is another matter if the mortgage rate is small and most of the payment goes towards the principal, but if these loans were taken some time ago that may not be the case. If you wish to carry the mortgage into the retirement then the mortgage payment becomes an expense item, just like rent would be, which needs to be balanced against the steady but fixed stream of income.
By now it is probably clear that the planning for debtfree retirement starts long before the actual retirement date, many years before the retirement. Plans have to be in place as to how to retire all the loans and or be acted upon; sometimes that prompts to go for a second job and/or some other avenue but using retirement money for paying off the debt is not one of them. Mental and disciplinary fortitude is needed. This is simply a variation of “tough love.”

displays, eagerly seeking out a cup of mango lassi. Colorful banners and ornamented umbrellas decorated Stumptown Park. Dressed in vibrant costumes, children and adults alike put on presentations of Bollywood dance, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Bhangra, and more. Families, friends, and intrigued strangers gathered in front of the stage to watch the show.
Several tents displayed handcrafted artwork, many of which were created by students and entirely from recycled material. Such pieces included paintings, structures (including a lifesized peacock and a recreation of the Thanjavur Temple), and even miniature cultural dresses from different regions of India modeled on Barbie dolls.
With cultural dance performances, art exhibits, food stalls, and bustling crowds throughout the afternoon, the second annual Festival of India at Matthews not only showcased the rich culture of India, but it also served as a unifying event to bring the town’s community together.
On Saturday, April 29, 2023, the festival kicked off at noon. And for the next few hours, people came and went, proudly recording their child’s dances, curiously exploring the jewelry and clothing
A long line quickly formed at the mehndi, or henna, station, one of the most popular of the afternoon. Dozens of people waited for one of five artists to draw elaborate designs on their skin. At the turban-wrapping stall, fathers gently chided their squirming young sons to sit still, then proudly snapped their pictures afterward. Women at the sari-draping stall pleated and folded long pieces of cloth, then wrapped them around their waists and over their shoulders. Different food stalls offered biryani, paneer, hakka noodles… you name it.
Although this was Matthews’ second regional festival, the larger Festival of India has been held in Uptown Charlotte for over 25 years and will take place on September 23, 2023, with similar festivities in tow.
The event was vibrant and provided an opportunity for the community, old and young, South Asian or not, to come together and get a taste of Indian culture. From a group of friends singing along to famous Bollywood songs to a family ordering tasty samosas from one of the various food tents, the Festival of India is all about community. It shows the beauty of our differences yet emphasizes oneness – individuality and unity.

boys, our male dog and me! Growing up in a small town in Western India, away from the glamor of Bollywood and raised by middle-class overprotective conservative parents, she had learned to regard her beauty as a liability. Who does that? I may be biased but my impression of seeing goodlooking girls from big cities whether in India or in the US, is that they are hyper aware of their beauty and know how to use it to attract boys.
Knowing her background and knowing that this fashion show was mostly meant for the Indian community, I thought it would be a good way to cross that item off her bucket list. I didn’t ask her too many questions. I was busy with my own work, so I let her do her own things, occasionally listening to her stories and progress.
I could sense the excitement in her voice
For rehearsals, my wife made several trips to Cerritos, an hour drive from our house in no traffic. She told me she preferred to stay overnight at the Sheraton the night before the show. She said it would be too hectic going back and forth from our house. I offered that perhaps I could stay with her, but she preferred to stay by herself as she needed to concentrate. I was a bit puzzled. Concentrate on what? This was not a stand-up act where you must remember your setlist, your premises, punchlines, and transitions. This involved just walking on stage and making sure you didn’t trip and fall off the ramp. How hard could it be?
I have been married for over 25 years, so I knew it was better to not question her judgement and just acquiesce to her wishes.
On the day of the show, she called and told me that her makeup artist spent about 1.5 hours working on her face. She was very happy with the results. They also picked out a dress for her I could sense the excitement in her voice. I asked her if she could send me a picture, but she preferred to keep it a surprise.
I almost didn’t recognizer her
My sons and I arrived a couple of hours before the show. My wife told me she would meet me in the lobby. She also needed some help putting some of her belongings in the car. I was looking forward to seeing this new side of her. When I saw her, I almost didn’t recognize her. They did an elaborate make up, a combination of turquoise, pink and black color under the eyes. Her hair was curly. The dress was a montage of a blue, yellow, and red pattern on a polyester material. It was something I had not imagined it would be. In my mind, I thought she would be wearing a long traditional Indian-inspired dress, perhaps a floral lehenga or a churidar with an overflowing bright voluminous top.
I felt that she had more elegant and fashionable dresses at home. The makeup made her look like a peacock. In the video sketches that we put on social media, she does only minimal makeup all by herself and in my opinion, she looks a lot better. Sometimes less is more. I quickly put a check on my incongruent thoughts, reminding myself that I was not doing a comedy show.
She seemed to be brimming with happiness and excitement — that was good enough for me. Afterall, what do I know about fashion trends? In the fashion show hall, the designer was there showcasing his dresses. I found most of the colors were dull.
I have a strong preference for Punjabi-influenced style that has a little bit of extravagance. Still, I chatted a bit with the designer, praising his creativity.
My wife was walking with an attiude
Just before the show, I prayed for my wife’s success on the ramp. I prayed that she wouldn’t trip on the ramp and her 45-second walk would go smoothly and gracefully. Unlike a comedy show, I didn’t know what to expect or what the metrics of success would be. Her walk put my worries to rest. I saw it through my Cannon SLR camera shooting stills, while my eldest son was doing the recording. The organizers had told all the models not to smile while on the ramp. My wife was walking with an attitude! A good blend of confidence, beauty and grace. A bit bolder choice of dress and makeup than I would have preferred but still very fashionable.
After the show, many of her family and friends complemented her on her stellar performance, her dress and the unique choice of makeup. Later she posted her picture and the video on her social media which got many accolades from friends and acquaintances.
Several days after the show, I sensed a strange kind of satisfaction in her. Here was a project that she completed all by herself, with minimal intervention from anyone. I imagined if were living in India, she would have to get permission from the in-laws and all my immediate and extended family. Here she was free.
It was a moment of metamorphosis for both of us
I was so proud of her! She had finally done something for her own happiness. She has raised three wonderful boys and put up with an idiosyncratic husband for 25 years, always putting their happiness before her own. This time she did something significant only for herself. It was a solo flight. No directions, no suggestions, no co-pilot. Not even me. I also realized that it was a moment of metamorphosis for both of us.
For her, coming out in the open like a free butterfly, breaking the shell of pupa, its tissues hardened with years of selfless commitments and responsibilities of marriage and parenthood.
For me, it was finally having wisdom after years of trials and errors to give her carte blanche to choose activities for herself. The activities that her heart says are intuitively right and have promise of instant gratification and long-lasting happiness of her own.
It was on that night, the rest of the audience got to see all the beauty I have always seen in her!

Happy summer Saathee fam! If you’re anything like me, you want to spend as much time as you can soaking up the sun and enjoying the warm Carolina weather, especially if you’re by the water. Personally, the first thing I think of when prepping for a pool, lake, or even beach day, are the snacks of course! I’m always looking for something quick and easy to take along, so one of my favorite things to make are Hawaiian roll sliders. All you have to do is layer your favorite ingredients on the slider buns and bake! Naturally I had to make a Desi version and I must say the combo of these flavors are delicious! Pairing classic chutneys with aloo masala and melty cheese is a game changer. These bite sized sandwiches are super easy to prepare and are great for on the go. I even encourage you to have fun with the toppings / flavors. Add on more veggies like sliced bell peppers, mix up your cheese selection, and experiment with different chutneys or sauces, your new summertime staple awaits. Enjoy!
Servings: About 12
Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes
1 Hawaiian Buns (12 Pack)
6 Pepper Jack cheese slices
½ red onion (thinly sliced)
1 tbsp butter, Sesame seeds
Aloo Masala Filling:
3 medium potatoes
¼ cup frozen peas
2 Green chilis (finely chopped)
1 tbsp ginger (grated)
Juice of half a lemon
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1 tsp ground cumin & coriander seeds
½ tsp chili powder
½ tsp garam masala
Salt & pepper to taste
Sweet Apple Butter Chutney:
½ cup apple butter
Juice of half a lemon
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp cumin
½ tsp chili powder
Pinch of salt & pepper, Water
Green Cilantro Chutney:
1 bunch cilantro
1 serrano green chili pepper (or less for less spice)
½ tsp cumin
Pinch of salt & pepper
Juice of half a lemon, Water
1. Start by prepping the chutneys. For sweet chutney, mix all ingredients together in a bowl until well combined, add water until you have a saucy consistency. For green chutney, place all ingredients together in a blender and blend until well combined, add a few splashes of water if needed. Feel free to add or subtract amount of spice to ideal taste for each chutney. Set aside.
2. Now prep the Aloo Masala (spiced potato) filling. Boil the potatoes for 15 mins or until easily pierced, then remove skin and lightly mash. Next, add 1 tbsp of oil to a pan along with cumin seeds and ground cumin + coriander. After 1 min, add in ginger and green chili. After another minute, add in the frozen peas until slightly warmed through and finish with the mashed potatoes, chili powder, garam masala, lemon juice and salt & pepper to taste. Lightly mash until the potato mixture is well combined.
3. Preheat oven to 350°F and assemble the sliders on a prepped baking sheet. Cut the Hawaiian buns in half, add green cilantro chutney to the top half and sweet apple butter chutney to the bottom half. Spread the aloo masala (spiced potato) mixture on bottom half, along with a layer of red onions and a bit more sweet chutney, or even your favorite hot sauce, top with pepper jack cheese slices.
4. Place the top buns back on, brush with melted butter mixture (melted butter + 1 tsp of each chutney) and top with sesame seeds. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 15-20 mins, until the tops of the buns are golden-brown.
5. Let cool for at least 5 mins and serve with extra chutney or your favorite summer picnic sides!

Human DNA can be sequenced from small amounts of water, sand and air in the environment to potentially extract identifiable information like genetic lineage, gender, and health risks, according to our new research.
Every cell of the body contains DNA. Because each person has a unique genetic code, DNA can be used to identify individual people. Typically, medical practitioners and researchers obtain human DNA through direct sampling, such as blood tests, swabs or biopsies. However, all living things, including animals, plants and microbes, constantly shed DNA. The water, soil and even the air contain microscopic particles of biological material from living organisms.
DNA that an organism has shed into the environment is known as environmental DNA, or eDNA. For the last couple of decades, scientists have been able to collect and sequence eDNA from soil or water samples to monitor biodiversity, wildlife populations and disease-causing pathogens. Tracking rare or elusive endangered species through their eDNA has been a boon to researchers, since traditional monitoring methods such as observation or trapping can be difficult, often unsuccessful and intrusive to the species of interest.
Researchers using eDNA tools usually focus only on the species they’re studying and disregard DNA from other species. However, humans also shed, cough and flush DNA into their surrounding environment. And as our team of

she was shown Naache Mayuri, a movie about Sudha Chandran who had lost her leg, and the girl decided to continue her dream of dancing. It notes in the post, that a year after her initial surgery, she picked up her ghungroos and started to dance again.
In a different article by TheBetterIndia, Hussain runs a dance academy called “We Are One” where the students are all Persons with a Disability (PWD). Hussain notes that at a young, he had a high fever that left him wheelchair bound. Hussain describes that at the Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust where he attended school, dance came into his life; at the age of 12, he was able to perform in a dance that he describes as an awakening for him.
He remarks that the journey for him in dance was not an easy one and describes that as he comes from a Muslim background, his family could not understand his desire to learn Bharatanatyam. He mentions that he did not start in the dance to prove any points, but mainly because it brought him joy.
The dance academy not only performed Bharatanatyam, but also to Salsa, Manipuri and martial dances, as well as yoga on wheels.
This leads to the topic of age. If paradigms are being shifted with regards to abilities and backgrounds, what about age? How “avant garde” can we get in this construct?
I attended a show by the Rainbow Dance Company at Meredith College that was scheduled at the end of March, and really enjoyed the show. On the website Artstogether.org/rainbow, the Rainbow Dance Co is the innovation of Lemma Mackie who is also the Arts Together founder, and it is described as the only multi-age modern dance company in North Carolina.
The company has members from ages 10 through 60 plus, where the members explore various societal topics through dance and they participate uniquely.
For example, a 10-year-old has the courage to provide artistic critique to their elders where both can respect each other as peers.
This is a direct contrast in paradigms to traditional thoughts in society where children are expected to listen to adults, and where conflicts can be seen between generations (i.e. generation X vs, generation Y, versus generation Z and so forth). This model in the Rainbow Dance Co is a constructive method of teaching how different ages need to work together and respect each other as individuals, versus stereotyping them by their ages.
People also have notions of how different people of different ages should be and act. Sometimes a kid who may be wise, may seem older than this age. For instance, a child who may be precocious and loves to learn, may be told by someone older to “Go outside and play.”
I have heard a child in a class say something so wise, that some may wonder how such a young child had such a deep awareness. Or we think that certain activities are limited to certain ages.
This leads to an interesting Indian movie that is on Netflix called KD. In the movie, it explores the happenstance friendship between an elder man and a young child. The
movie itself could be considered quirky, and an “indie” film, which are the type of films I enjoy. It explores the deeper messages of who we are as people. For instance, are we defined by societies’ expectations of who we should be, or should that journey of who we are be defined by ourselves? What path should we follow and is one path suitable for everyone? Or can a new path be forged?
As a society, as artists, as dancers, and as individuals, these are questions that may not have one answer or one solution.
The past may have some answers, or the present may have some answers, or we may need to search for the answers. But when there is not a clear path in place, or when it is time to reevaluate current norms and thinking, or when we just want to have fun and try something new, challenging the status quo may create the required changes in society.
If you are contemplating what is the best time to start something, the present is the gift.
This series of articles is about the journey and unique insights of an adult dance student learning classical Indian dance and the experiences and perspective of taking classical Indian dance as both an American and an Indian.

to explore political unrest. The choreography is based on artistic director George Staib’s childhood experiences as an Armenian born in Tehran and living in the United States since he was ten years old.
There are additional shows, all of which feature interesting dance. Just for one peek into July, the classically modern Paul Taylor Dance Company (PTDC), another of my favorites, returns July 14 and 15 and is a group not to be missed. By redefining art from beautiful to thoughtful, I find Igor Stravinsky to be one of the most important artists of the twentieth century.
I’m happy that PTDC will include music by Stravinksy as well as jazz artists like Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, and other Big Band musicians. PTDC dance is always rich in detail and firmly rooted in ballet with gorgeous costumes.

geneticists, ecologists and marine biologists in the Duffy Lab at the University of Florida found, signs of human life can be found everywhere but in the most isolated locations.
Our team uses environmental DNA to study endangered sea turtles and the viral tumors to which they are susceptible. Tiny hatchling sea turtles shed DNA as they crawl along the beach on their way to the ocean shortly after they are born. Sand scooped from their tracks contains enough DNA to provide valuable insights into the turtles and the chelonid herpesviruses and fibropapillomatosis tumors that afflict them. Scooping a liter of water from the tank of a recovering sea turtle under veterinary care equally provides a wealth of genetic information for research. Unlike blood or skin sampling, collecting eDNA causes no stress to the animal.
We also tested the technique in Ireland, tracing along a river that winds from a remote mountaintop, through small rural villages and into the sea at a larger town of 13,000 inhabitants. We found human DNA everywhere but in the remote mountain tributary where the river starts, far from human habitation.
We also collected air samples from a room in our wildlife veterinary hospital in Florida. People who were present in the room gave us permission to take samples from the air. We recovered DNA matching the people, the animal patient and common animal viruses present at the time of collection. Surprisingly, the human eDNA found in the local environment was intact enough for us to identify mutations associated with disease and to determine the genetic ancestry of people who live in the area. Sequencing DNA that volunteers left in their footprints in the sand even yielded part of their sex chromosomes.
Our team dubs inadvertent retrieval of human DNA from environmental samples “human genetic bycatch.” We’re calling for deeper discussion about how to ethically handle human environmental DNA.
Human eDNA could present significant advances to research in fields as diverse as conservation, epidemiology, forensics and farming. If handled correctly, human eDNA could help archaeologists track down undiscovered ancient human settlements, allow biologists to monitor cancer mutations in a given population or provide law enforcement agencies useful forensic information.
However, there are also myriad ethical implications relating to the inadvertent or deliberate collection and analysis of human genetic bycatch. Identifiable information can be extracted from eDNA, and accessing this level of detail about individuals or populations comes with responsibilities relating to consent and confidentiality.
While we conducted our study with the approval of our institutional review board, which ensures that studies on people adhere to ethical research guidelines, there is no guarantee that everyone will treat this information ethically.
Genetic sequencing technology used to decode DNA has improved rapidly in recent years, and it is now possible to easily sequence the DNA of every organism in a sample from the environment.
Our team suspected that the sand and water samples we were using to study sea turtles would also contain DNA from a number of other species – including, of course, humans. What we didn’t know was just how informative the human DNA we could extract would be.
To figure this out, we took samples from a variety of locations in Florida, including the ocean and rivers in urban and rural areas, sand from isolated beaches and a remote island never usually visited by people. We found human DNA in all of those locations except the remote island, and these samples were high quality enough for analysis and sequencing.
Many questions arise regarding human environmental DNA. For instance, who should have access to human eDNA sequences? Should this information be made publicly available? Should consent be required before taking human eDNA samples, and from whom? Should researchers remove human genetic information from samples originally collected to identify other species?
We believe it is vital to implement regulations that ensure collection, analysis and data storage are carried out ethically and appropriately. Policymakers, scientific communities, and other stakeholders need to take human eDNA collection seriously and balance consent and privacy against the possible benefits of studying eDNA. Raising these questions now can help ensure everyone is aware of the capabilities of eDNA and provide more time to develop protocols, regulations to ensure appropriate use of eDNA techniques & ethical handling of human genetic bycatch.

If you’re one of those that pay their credit card bills ontime in full each month, the APR or the Fed benchmark interest rate doesn’t mean much to you. But if you carry a balance and pay the minimum amount, your credit card’s APR rate will likely increase affecting your payments. Suppose you have a $4000 credit balance and current interest rate is 20 percent. Making only a minimum payment of $80 per month will take nine years to pay off your credit card. This is the compounding effect at work and at a higher cost of capital. The effects are devastating.
Key takeaways:
1. Balance your outflows to inflows – at least every quarter. If you’re bottom-line number is in the red - after tallying your bills and recurring payments with your income, then it’s time to address categories of overspend - impulse buying, an expensive hobby, or eating out too often?
2. Try keeping your plastic card at home and practice paying with cash when going grocery shopping - have a shopping list and cash on hand. This limits impulse spending due to the inherent inconvenience.
3. Maintain an envelope for your top spending categoriesto rein in spending. This will also help in monitoring your cashflow at the end of every month.
4. Watch your debt-to-income ratio. Experts recommend not more than 36 percent of your gross income going to paydown all your monthly debt payments. Anything above and it teeters into a default.
A few debt payoff strategies:
1. Snowball method: Start by paying off the smallest debt first, while making minimum payments on other debts. Once the smallest debt is paid off, move on to the next smallest debt, and so on.
2. Avalanche method: Focus on paying off the debt with the highest interest rate first, while making minimum payments on other debts. Once the highest interest debt is paid off, move on to the next highest interest debt, and so on.
3. Balance transfer: Transfer high-interest debt to a credit card with a lower interest rate. This can help you save on interest and pay off debt faster.
4. Debt consolidation: Combine multiple debts into one loan with a lower interest rate. This can simplify your debt repayment and potentially save you money on interest.
Since this article is targeted towards women who primarily manage household finances – and the minutiae, next time you’re at the cashier counter in a department or retail store and you’re lured with an offer to open a credit card for a quick discount - stop and think about the true cost of this discount.
Poetically speaking: Plastic cards, a trap so sweet, They promise the world but come with a fee. A swipe here, a swipe there, Before you know it, you’re in despair.
The debt piles up, and interest rates soar, Minimum payments, but what’s in store? A vicious cycle, hard to break, It’s time to act, for our own sake.
The credit card debt crisis, it’s no joke, Affecting millions, a financial yoke. The stress it brings, the sleepless nights, We need a plan, to put things right.
Living beyond our means, we’ve lost control, The cost of convenience, taking its toll. But it’s not too late, we can turn it around, By taking small steps and getting unbound.
A budget, a plan, a financial goal, A little discipline, to keep us whole. We can break free, from this debt trap, And regain control, without any flap.
It won’t be easy, but it’s worth a try, To ease the burden, and wave debt goodbye. Let’s start today, and take a stand, For a brighter financial future, and a better land.

Now that I am older and wiser, I understand that the past doesn’t define me. I am proud to say that I have found my passion in Italian opera. I will be travelling to Tuscany this summer to study and perform opera. If my younger self saw me today, she wouldn’t believe her eyes. A nervous Elementary school kid who refused to sing came out of her shell because she chose to ignore the past and focus on the present.
I might forget the lyrics to my songs this summer, in front of 300 people who are fluent in the language that I am singing in. That won’t stop me from continuing to sing and it won’t stop me from loving what I do.
The present shouldn’t become a burden where you are stepping on eggshells, trying not to repeat the mistakes of the past. Isn’t it amazing that you have the power to achieve your goals and dreams?
You may not reach as far as you want to, but you at least have the power to start something. Don’t give up any of your power to the past because it does not accurately represent the person you are as a whole. Instead, direct all your attention on the now.
The present is a gift, so treat it like one.

Immigration continued from page 42
numbers requires a huge investment in terms of time and money, of which Republicans and Democrats have been unable to agree.
As a result of Washington’s paralysis, states have begun enacting laws that have an outsized impact on the immigration landscape. Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, who has not-so-subtly made preparations to run for the presidency in 2024, recently passed a sweeping immigration bill that promises to have a seismic impact on the state’s immigrant population.
Some changes required by FL Senate Bill 1718 include:
• Requiring employers with over 25 employees to use Everify to determine if an employee is eligible to work in the United States.
• Mandates that hospitals ask questions about a patient’s immigration status during the admission and intake process and submit reports to government entities about providing care to those without lawful status.
• Penalizes individuals caught transporting those without lawful immigration status (including family members, friends and co-workers) with up to 15 years in prison.
While the legality of these rules remains to be seen (a court challenge is all but guaranteed), the somewhat draconian nature of some of the bill’s penalties provides insight as to what DeSantis considers a winning issue. Proponents argue that the bill discourages those without lawful status from coming to Florida; opponents argue that the bill fails to acknowledge the huge impact that migrant workers (legal or illegal) have on Florida’s agricultural and construction sectors and will hurt employers already struggling with an overly tight labor from finding muchneeded labor. The bill does not go into effect until July 1, 2023.
Biden has long-been criticized as failing to engage meaningfully on the immigration issue, an assessment that is not entirely unwarranted. Though the pandemic did significantly impact the processing times associated with the visa adjudications process, practitioners saw the wait times for routine visas double and triple from pre-pandemic levels. For example, spousal based green card applications (commonly known as the Adjustment of Status process) routinely took four to five months to complete prior to the pandemic at both North Carolina USCIS offices in RaleighDurham and Charlotte; this is compared to the 18 – 24 months processing times that practitioners now commonly advise individuals to wait before expecting to receive their green cards.
Biden ran for the presidency citing a return to normalcy and a lowering of the temperature with respect to government; sadly, his government has failed to deliver on efficiency and accountability with some consulates worldwide still backlogged by over a year with respect to processing simple visitor visas. More pressing visas, such as immigrant workers are waiting years to immigrate to the United States, despite widely accepted economic data
showing that the United States has millions of unfilled jobs throughout the economy.
These delays and inefficiencies are simply unacceptable and when coupled with media images of an overwhelmed border patrol, the current administration appears slowfooted and incompetent in responding to an otherwise foreseeable crisis. If Biden is serious about beating back a Republican challenge in 2024, he must engage on the immigration issue in a real way, lest he cede the issue entirely to Republicans. Although the real keys to lasting reform sit in the halls of Congress, the President’s inability (or unwillingness) to address the immigration issue headon leaves him vulnerable to an already loud chorus of accusations that he is too old and senile to meaningfully address what is a serious political issue. Much time exists between now and November 5, 2024, but history has taught us that whole-scale immigration change takes time, capital and most of all, political courage. The first two are dwindling for Biden and what remains to be seen is whether he has enough of the third to make it work regardless.

Suny Polytechnic Institute: Upstate Accelerate Program
Dr. Carlie Phipps, Ph.D., Interim Dean of the College of Arts + Sciences at Suny Polytechnic Institute, says they are looking for students with an “other-oriented perspective.” In other words, they are looking for students who are volunteering not because it is a requirement for the National Honors Society but because they genuinely want to help others.
Some of the passion projects she highlighted included a student who produced a set of braille blocks and a game patterned after Scrabble called “Brabble” for children who are visually impaired or blind.
Other projects include making artificial arms and hands for children born without them. One student developed golf clubs for veterans who had lost fingers. “All these activities are unique because it’s a multi-disciplinary team working together,” Dr. Phipps said.
While this list has passion projects highlighted by admission officers to programs, it is by no means a blueprint to getting accepted. Instead of following the passions of others, you should explore what makes you excited. By turning your interests into impact, you can create a standout resume that can compete with other top applicants to medical school, direct medical programs, and summer programs.

Aries (March 21 – April 20)
After a positive start, you should experience a minor failure this month. This could in turn cause you to lose confidence and make bad decisions. Try to maintain an easy temperament and keep working hard. Travel could be the best activity and potentially bring in some extra income. A strong para-psychic experience could bring major change to your friend circle and relations with subordinates.
Taurus (April 21 – May 20)
Things will improve slowly but won’t progress anything too dramatically. A boost in positive energy will promote financial gain. Victory over your enemies should help control any other potential opponents. You should also experience good health aside from a minor dietary issue. Avoid disputes with family members. Also, new job opportunities may come your way but take your time to make a decision.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
You may be forced to compromise with your morals this month. Your talents should bring in money, though could also make you terribly busy at work. This is a good time to make new friends and think about any marriage-related decisions. You may earn a boost in your reputation due to creative activities. Destiny is on your side. Take extra precautions for your health and avoid your rivals.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
Life should fly by this month. Though you may experience major ups and downs, you can achieve great success by the end. Watch your morals very carefully and curb any potential wrongdoing. You can count on your business partners, but don’t trust them blindly. Minor family problems may also be an unwanted distraction. A heavy workload could also keep you on your toes most of the time.
Leo (July 23 – August 22)
This period will make you very comfortable. You should come in contact with some influential people, which could potentially result in both a rise in status and income. You might enter profitable deals. Others will appreciate your social and religious work. Travel will prove very relaxing. Overall, this month should be quite pleasant.
Virgo (August 23 – September 21)
Avoid aggression and act wisely during the first half of the month, and you should be back in to control by the second. Don’t overthink things or try to cheat your way into making easy money. Major family-related problems may disturb your personal itinerary, but your partner may prove to be of great help. Remain focused through these rough times as they won’t stay that way for long.
Libra (September 22 – October 20)
This is the month of travel, relaxation, enjoying life, and celebrating your success and achievements. A long cherished wish will be fulfilled for you this month. Don’t dispute with your partner. Do something different to achieve success without any thought to profit or loss; just walk a few steps onto an unknown path. Also be sure to watch your health seriously.
Scorpio (October 21 – November 20)
Any labor you undertake in the first half of the month will produce results during the second. This impact will not be promising, but satisfactory. You will experience delays and disturbances in your day-to-day pursuits, so try to dodge any temptation to be involved in too many projects. This is a good time for a vacation. A religious or social ceremony is also possible within the family.
Sagittarius (November 21 – December 21)
Even though there won’t be any financial problems, anxiety and fear will rule you this month. Try to develop mental strength and if necessary, spend some time doing meditation. The period is not negative, but aggressive actions and potentially bad decisions won’t allow you to enjoy it. At the same time, be sure to keep a close eye on your health.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 21)
A very busy schedule and unexpected travel may thwart any day-to-day plans this month. This is a good time to buy real estate. Go against your nature and work practically, though a misunderstanding with a work colleague may lead to a heated argument. It may not be possible to avoid it, so try to act rationally. Bad news from your partner is possible during the second week. Improvement in your health is clearly indicated.
Aquarius (January 22 – February 18)
Uncertainty may delay critical decisions and lose you an important opportunity this month. A major mistake could put you in hot water. You’ll seek spiritual help throughout the month. Financial loss is unavoidable, but your regular income should remain undisturbed. Try to protect your morals and don’t take any major risks.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
You’ve entered into a difficult phase of life. You could face tough competition at your place of business. Luck may not favor you at critical times. You should receive support from friends and see relief during the second half of the month. Minor health ailments are also possible. Overactive aggression and any risk taking tendencies must also be avoided.

Of course, most of these lands were stolen from Native Americans, but that’s a different conversation.
In the spirit of a common phrase used in the young years of this country, “Go West young man,” and with a nod to the frontier folks of the past, in this frontier land of ours, we are clearing brush, trimming the waist high grasses, exploring the woods, and slowly emerging a homestead.
Dealing with fields of high grass surrounding the small home on the property was the first order of business. After these sections were cut by a hired gun with a tractor and bushhog, a little bit of where to start and what to do with these large fields approached clarity.
In the spring you cut a couple of acres and they are already ready to cut again the following weekend. Rain and warm springtime sun tends to do that to the land and the greenery.
The blades of grass, or in this case multiple species of grasses and weeds and bushes and brush, all make up the giant yard that now marks the land around the small, old home we fixed up. The recent rain urges new scents and blooms out of the grounds and trees have come alive in glowing shades of green, even the weeds are blooming colorful flowers.
This will be the first summer we spend on this acreage. It will be a work in progress for many years.
A push lawnmower is useless in these parts. It would be like using a push mower to cut a golf course. Even a riding
lawnmower seems ill equipped, what’s really needed are the tractor and a bushhog.
This day we worked the perimeter of the house. Maybe next week we will tackle the fields and woods to the West, the part of this property that evokes the mythical American West. The riding mower, machete, boots, weedwhacker, axes and saws at the ready.
O
ff to the frontier lands. Go West, “not so” young man.
